Too Good To Go: End Food Waste for Negative User Reviews

80% Bad Value, Nearly Inedible, or Last-minute cancellationsI have tried to like this app - I really have. Great concept, and I daily use and love an app in a similar vein to save on and save expiring food at grocery stores, so I was very interested in using this app for a similar purpose. However, this experience with Too Good to Go has been just awful except for one single order at one location: - Half or more of the orders will get cancelled last-minute by the business with no notice or consideration, and most times this has been after the pick-up time already opened and I’ve already been on my way or arrived at the location. Waste of my time and gas money, and just plain inconsiderate. - One location, again after I already arrived, claimed they didn’t have an order (even after being shown the completed, paid for order in the app), and suggested I cancel the order and instead pay them a higher amount of money for the same item. Waste of my time, gas money, and a clear attempt at trying to cheat me out of a higher amount of money since I was already there. - My first order was a small, dried out, plain cheese pizza that was essentially inedible - my dogs got it as a chew toy. Waste of time and money. - The “before” prices on the food items in the app are ridiculously overvalued and blatantly unrealistic. They try to make it out like you will be saving 60% or more, when in actuality many of the items are basically at approximate value and just didn’t sell or are expiring soon, or at best you may save 10-20% (if they don’t waste your money driving there then cancelling it). You will not save anywhere near what they are trying to portray, and will be mostly disappointed in the product. Overall, the newest reviews of this app that are overwhelmingly negative are the most telling and accurate - don’t trust outdated or paid-for positive reviews as they are not the current experience. This is a good concept so poorly executed that instead of saving anything, it has instead wasted my gas money, wasted my travelling time, disrupted eating plans, and is overall just an aggravating and highly disappointing experience. To be deleted and avoided entirely..Version: 22.6.10

Received inedible food - Waste of time and money!!!I was very excited about finding this app and being able to help save some food from going into the trash. New to this area of Brooklyn, NY I thought this would be a fun and inexpensive way to try some of the local bakeries and restaurants. Unfortunately I had a terrible first experience and will not be testing my luck again. I picked a bakery semi-close to my area that had great feedback on the app but ended up receiving a bag of 15-20 stale rolls that were hard and inedible. A big waste of my time and money and a disappointing end to something that should have been a fun experience. App needs to let new customers read actual reviews from people to get a better idea of what to expect and to keep stores accountable and prevent them from selling food that should go in the trash. Customer service issued a credit to my account instead of a refund and a message that said it was acceptable for stores to give stale baked goods and expired items and included a link to recipes I could make with my rock hard rolls 😳.Version: 22.1.1

‘Magic’ bag = rubbish bagI tried purchasing a ‘magic bag’ from a high end bakery: 3 very miniature, dry and squashed cupcakes in a tiny box and a little bag of praline Easter eggs (3 weeks after Easter). No one would ever cough up 3 pounds for this literal rubbish, nor bother to pick it up. This app is such a good premise in theory, but by the sound of some of the reviews and my own experience, I suspect some vendors are using this as a way of getting rid of stock they are failing to sell, as opposed to stock that is desirable but won’t keep. And they seem to sell it at a higher price than they’d get if the goods were on display in their shop. So much for shops wanting to reduce waste... only as long as they can profit from their rubbish! This is only based on one try - but Im now highly sceptical and don’t fancy being ripped off again. The fact that shops don’t have to describe or photograph what they’re giving away is a huge flaw in this app, as is the fact that you can’t leave reviews and ratings..Version: 19.4.0

Sketchy executionGreat idea in theory but sketchy in the execution. Downloaded for Edmonton restaurants and made two orders. One was supposed to be $20 something for $5.99 but only got two small empanadas worth $7 on the actual menus. Second had a pick up time of 8 pm but when I arrived its location closed at 4 pm. Still waiting for refund..Version: 22.5.11

Bad ServiceI tried this app multiple times are different restaurants. When I go to pick up the order they tell me they gave the order to someone else instead or they forgot to pack something....big waste of time.Version: 22.3.1

No response from customer serviceSo, I’ve been using this app over a month now. I absolutely love their idea and was happy to be part of it… until this Wednesday. The story is: I placed an order at one of the stores, went for the pick up, and found out the store doesn’t exist. The address for which the app sent me to is a parking lot that clearly doesn’t have a market/store. So I figured there might be a mess up and contacted customer service. The website told me there isn’t a number to call and the only option is by submitting a feedback or sending a email. So I submitted a feedback and was told they’ll get back to me in 48 hours. Guess what? It’s over 48 hours and I hasn’t heard anything from customer service yet. Please, I love the idea of this app but execute it correctly please..Version: 21.11.0

Great idea and app let down by barely honest retailersThis app is a great idea and I would happily give it 5 stars if it weren’t for the bad experience I have had with my first order. The fault isn’t with the app, but the retailer (an Italian Restaurant) was barely honest with the contents of the bag. I was expecting to receive fresh food not sold that day, but instead I received 4 biscuits that were months out of date and some chocolates. This particular restaurant seemed to be emptying their store room of out of date junk pushed to the back and forgotten until now. The bag was supposed to be worth £12 but I would struggle to value it at 50p, and certainly nowhere near the £4 charged. This experience means I am unlikely to use the app again and I can only recommend users to be aware of such scammy retailers. When Too God To Go can promise a certain minimum level of quality then I will try again and hopefully will increase my rating..Version: 22.7.0

Not notifying people sold outCouple of times now this that happened when I buy a bag and when I go to location it ends up being closed or the place ran out of food. Some people just go to these places that are out of the way from their normal paths hoping to save some food and it’s frustrating because it wastes one’s time and transportation expense. The establishments need to take responsibility to cancel the order. Also the app needs to fix the time where certain places say to pick up and when customers go their the location is closed and everyone who showed up are upset and starving because they came after work hoping to get some sort of dinner. I know because I was one of those 5 people who showed up. I hope the app will improve on these issues, but I still see the wrong hours for that last location I went to. Other than these issues, the app works okay..Version: 22.8.01

GarbageCool idea but doesn't work with capitalism - stores only want to make money so they give a minimal amount of food (not worth the $) or just basically tell u to "F off" even though they got food sitting there. They dgaf about saving food from waste it's just about making more money.Version: 22.9.11

Has the app changed?I used to love using this app we ordered lots of vegetarian carveries, was brilliant, no complaints at all, yummy. However haven’t used it for a while I went back on and despite making sure my preferences are set, and trying over and over , for some reason I now can’t seem to filter out items I’m not interested in. I have filtered out non veggie & all breakfast/daytime bags but keep seeing them. it’s really difficult and takes ages to find what I am looking for, I deleted and re installed still not working. feel like giving up. I’d also like the option to search for places in a miles radius rather than only in kilometres, I prefer not to use kilometres and would like this option it would make the experience perfect. Apart from that the idea and food is great just please sort the search settings and preferences..Version: 22.8.10

Great conceptI honestly would hold off on using this app until they allow you to review specific stores with more than just ratings. Id like to know which places are scummy and which actually give you the proclaimed value.Version: 22.8.01

Great concept, app needs helpConcept is great. The places I pickup from are great. The customer service and execution of this app leave A LOT to be desired. The latest UI update I thought would do more than just highlight pickup times. If that was what y’all spent time on, hire someone else. A huge issue is you can’t cancel within 2 hours. At all. I don’t care if I can’t get my $$ back, but if it’s an app about not wasting food then let it go to someone else! Also, I’m so tired of seeing 7-11 on my home screen every time I load the app. I don’t want food from there, not now, not ever in my life. Let me customize the home screen with what I actually want to see and stop wasting my time scrolling to the bottom or clicking the favorites button. Load what I want to see on the initial window! If there’s news restaurants then have a notification bubble pop up. Also, most of the images are complete misrepresentations of what will be offered. USE THE USER PHOTOS!!!!! Check your own subreddit. Read what the people are saying..Version: 22.2.0

No customer service option for issue resolutionI used app for first time and ran into a problem. I placed my food order in this app for pick up from an establishment in my area. In the parking lot, I swiped to indicate I was on premises for my pick up. When I walked up to the door, the establishment was closed and there was a sign in the window they had moved to another city. I called the 1-800 number in the window for the new location but could only leave a message. In the meantime, I mistakenly—or actually I think it was the only way to move to another mobile screen in the app—I clicked on the “picked up” icon. So I paid for a meal I never got and was stranded at a closed location. Today, again I called the food vendor who told me they informed the app marketing dept that my location had closed but obviously the app did not get updated. I tried all the options in the app portal to try and report this problem and get refunded but it is all automated and each option led to a dead end. I even went online to look for contact info and their website directs you to report within the app. Not good..Version: 22.11.10

Unfair 2-hour cancellation ruleThe shops & restaurants can cancel customers’ orders shortly before their collection time, but the customer can only cancel their order 2 hours ahead, how is this fair? I understand that shops & restaurants can run into unexpected situations that they don’t have as much surplus food as they expected, but customers can run into unexpected situations that they won’t be able to show up as planned as well. I previously had orders that’s been cancelled by the restaurants within very short notice before the collection time, but today when I tried to cancel my order 40 mins BEFORE the scheduled collection time STARTED, the app wouldn’t let me. I also ring up the restaurant as asked if they can cancel my order on their side, but they told me they’re UNABLE to, which is SIMPLY NOT TRUE because my order has been cancelled before by the restaurants within even shorter notice. How is it fair that the restaurants & shops have the privilege to cancel customers’ orders whenever they want while all customers have to strictly stick to the 2-hour rule? I’ve been using this app for a while and I do love the app, my overall experience is about a 4-star with this app, but I rated it a 1-star just to get the developer’s attention, will edit my review if anything is done to change this unfair rule..Version: 22.5.0

Worst experienceReview on 11th October 2022 I made my very first order for ‘prepared meals’ with the Too Good To Go app at Pizza Pizza, 55 Mountainash Rd, Brampton, ON L6R 1W4, on 11th October 2022 around 1:40 pm. My pick up slot was scheduled between 2:00 and 3:00 pm. My husband went to the store with the order details around 2:40pm and was not only given the meal but was also humiliated by the staff for wasting their time with an order that did not even exist. 3ZAP7W4TSVI was the order number made from my Too Good To Go account and according to the staffs at the store no such order existed. I don't know whether this is a fraud played by the store or the team behind this application or even a joint misdeed by both the parties. I tried contacting the app team but was only sent a mail saying they will try to find out what went wrong and might try to get a refund. I’m not bothered about the refund money that you’re going to return, what about the person’s time and energy that got wasted because of your misdeed and false promises. I wouldn’t bother if your team comes to my door and ask for 6 dollars. I’m ready to help anyone with a good cause and anyone who needs little money to buy food or clothing. Dear Too Good To Go team, there are better ethical ways to make money. It is never too late to learn good practices..Version: 22.9.11

Not worth itThe app is a great idea, but poorly executed. I have tried it five times to mixed results. On two occasions I was given food that being Ed in the compost bin. There was visible mould, and what was edible needed to be consumed right away (ie within hours). Again the idea is good, but it doesn’t fit into daily love well. Some experiences were good, but when you factor in the price, the need to schedule around pickups, and the fact that this is probably taking day olds away from staff it’s not worth it..Version: 22.6.10

Reviews? Why can we not read other reviews? It will show a 3.2 rating from 10 reviews, but there is no way to click to see more details about what the user shared. Very hit or miss. Last night I got three items that were all expired since June 2022. “Recently past their prime” doesn’t mean 4 months old. I also hate that the businesses can cancel - if this happens we should be refunded AND get a small TooGoodToGo credit on our next purchase (eg. $1, $2, $3, etc)..Version: 22.10.0

Great idea but seems suspectThis is a great idea and would be awesome if there was actually rigger around this. I’ve been watching several bakeries that “sell out” every night for items 19 minutes after the store is closed for same day pick up. How is this possible? This happens on more than one shop and is suspect! I don’t know if these companies benefit from this but poor practice! There are some legit places but so much time is wasted on this app.Version: 22.11.10

Great app, oversimplifiedWhy can I see the amount of people that have reviewed the restaurant, but can’t click in to see the reviews? Handful of restaurants I’ve been to frequently because the food is good, but each time they have us waiting 15+ minutes for pickup, even when we’re well into the pickup window, and I’d love to leave them feedback on that. While I know it’s meant to be a surprise every night, why do you ask what the restaurant gave, but I don’t get anything other than the “the items in your bag will be a surprise,” rather than something like: “past customers have reported getting etc, etc, etc”? Also, the search function is just rough..Version: 22.4.0

Can't hide storesCan't hide stores that abuse the system, or are profiting from it by only giving inedible or overcooked leftovers etc..Version: 22.4.0

Keeps canceling ordersThey keep canceling orders cause they “ran out of food” within a couple of minutes of the pick up time. A huge pain when you’re already on your way to the store to get it..Version: 21.6.4

App is good but that’s the only good thingIn Edmonton I tried the app since it was in the news. The app works great. However on my first time trying I ended up with 4 sushi rolls and a drink which barely covers what I paid. Restaurants that do this will kill the app..Version: 22.5.11

The promise of this is amazing, the practicality needs workI’ve been so excited to try this app as soon as I got back to Brooklyn - I LOVE the idea! Unfortunately one small design feature makes it completely impractical for a New Yorker to use. The smallest distance range you can set is 2 miles - small enough for a car based city, but utterly useless if you’re looking for options within walking distance. Two miles puts me in range of three different boroughs! No, I will not be hopping the subway into Manhattan to save $10, thanks... Let me reduce the range to .5 miles (or offer a map based list of places to choose from) and I’d probably use this all the time. For now, another great idea app parked on the last screen of my phone 😕.Version: 21.4.0

No food when you show upI’ve tried this twice in Calgary now. First time the store had no clue about the pickup but made me some food on the spot which was nice of them. The next time I went to pick up at a different restaurant and the guy said someone had picked up the order. He said they only post 1 but often get 2 or 3 ppl come and pick up and that the app does not work properly. 2/2 with bad experiences. Although they refunded my money on the second it was still a waste of time and gas to go to the restaurant just to be told that there was nothing they could once I got there.Version: 22.6.0

Poorly organisedI’ve made four orders through the app - two worked as they should, in that you pay slightly less than face value for whatever the restaurant would have thrown away. The other two cancelled after I had paid, saying they didn’t have food left over. This would be okay if the notification came instantly upon ordering, but it doesn’t. The nature of the app means you can only pick up food late, meaning you have to plan to eat much later than usual dinner hours. So when you wait well past dinner time, and are only then told the food you paid for isn’t available after all, it is disruptive. Although I was refunded, the app needs to discourage restaurants from advertising food they will not actually provide. It is also not very useful without the option to sort by closest distance..Version: 21.6.1

Great idea but at the mercy of the sellerI’ve gotten some generous portions for the $ but often walked away very dissatisfied. There needs to be more accountability for the proprietors to actually give the buyer a bargain for taking the leftovers. Often the attitude seems to be, “well, you don’t pay as much so you don’t get as much [as a regular customer].” My understanding is that the buyer gets an actual deal in exchange for not getting a choice. If I get a chintzy amount of something I may or may not even like, where is the benefit for the customer—paying for th privilege of “fighting food waste”? I think too many of the companies that participate see this app primarily as an additional income stream and forget that there is still a customer who should expect some level of “good service.” Really, if they only wanted to avoid “food waste” there are plenty of charitable outlets in my city that they could partner with to give the leftovers to those who might go hungry otherwise..Version: 22.11.10

3/3 bad experiencesOrdered food 3 times and had 3 bad experiences. First the cream cheese expired a month and a half ago. Then I got hot sauce that expired in May. Then I got to a restaurant and they had no knowledge of the app even though they were signed up and I had paid. They had no food to give me so it was a huge waste of time driving all the way there. Obviously I won’t be using the app again lol.Version: 22.10.0

Not worth itMy experience in Canada has not been great. Stores just put expired unusable products in the bag and Longos just give you their stale already marked as reduced baked goods. Seems like TooGoodToGo doesn’t have any standards in place as to what stores can put in your bag..Version: 22.7.0

Not ResponsibleI ordered the food, when arrived at the store it was closed. Tried to contact the help center in the app and it asked me some questions and to take pictures. I did and my final help response was ridiculous: we will contact you WITHIN 3 business days.Version: 21.6.3

No food left after purchasing, no communicationI visited a yo!sushi store in Worcester on 2 occasions to be told they had no food left and they didn’t even notify us on both occasions. Asked TooGoodToGo if they would help the sending time around as we were out of pocket after x2 63 mile round trips to this store as there isn’t much choice in our area. We were told we could make another purchase and they would refund us which is really what we were expecting. We’ve given up with this, even more disappointing that they have offered compensation to someone who left a similar review on here with a similar experience so clearly not consistent with their customer service. Hardly saving the environment as they boast after making 2 long and wasted trips for nothing is it! Pretty terrible experience really in all honesty, it’s not worth the hassle it would be cheaper to just pay full price, the wasted food is their problem if they can’t fulfill their promises..Version: 20.10.1

What’s the point of vegetarian/vegan settings if restaurant isn’t notified?I’ve heard of TooGoodToGo for awhile & was excited when it started to spread around Los Angeles. I have mine set to vegetarian/vegan which obviously limits the restaurants & coffee shops that come up which is good. HOWEVER, what’s the point of using these settings when I order bags (from mostly coffee shops) & am routinely given meat products I can’t eat? I then have to throw them out. Restaurants should be given notice that a vegetarian/vegan ordered, that way they can cancel the bag for someone else to order if it’s a meat product or just swap/substitute with someone who isn’t (ex: give one person two croissants & one two ham sandwiches instead of one of each to both). I’ve ordered about a dozen bags & thrown out items in half of them, a few the whole bag (got slices of pizza with meat on them). I understand you get what’s left at the end, but why list a place under vegetarian/vegan when there’s a very good chance you won’t be able to eat what they give you?.Version: 22.8.10

Not good for food wasteI don’t understand how a ‘magic bag’ which is a complete lucky dip benefits food waste when the likelihood is you won’t like / be able to use 50-75% of what’s in the bag and have to throw it away ?? This seems so strange and not aligned with the ethos. Why not just advertise specific items that will be thrown away and people can rescue them by buying individually. There’s not enough ways to be specific with preferences. If you really want to do a magic bag, then why not create a simple check box list of every item from that store , so you have stated what you would (and more importantly wouldn’t) like if anything is left over at the end of the day. The blind bag idea is so risky for food waste. Plus you don’t know if it will be worth your money. Maybe you get nothing you like then you’ve spent money and had to throw it away so will have the net result of feeling awful when it’s supposed to be a feel good product/ idea. I think the principle is good but it needs some work to be better so you can order specifics & preferences. 🙏.Version: 22.10.0

Wasted time as there was no food to pick upWhile this may reflect the store rather than the app, I was thoroughly disappointed when I travelled all the way to the store to pick up my order, on time, only to find out that they did not have any food left for me. I would have appreciated if they cancelled the order ahead of time so as to not waste my time, money or fuel. On that thought, it kinda seems like a ploy to get customers in the store - “Sorry I don’t have any old food to give you, why not buy some full priced items instead”. The app needs to pay close attention to stores that have a history of not cancelling (in due time) orders that can’t be fulfilled, it’s seems fraudulent to treat customers this way..Version: 22.10.10

Too good to be trueDon’t get me wrong, the idea is good, and call me once bitten twice shy… but… I got the app and did a mystery grab bag from a local produce store. I guess I showed up too early, because I saw the person who received the order just go around and grab some random produce and a bag of cheap candies.(Bananas were still green) It was advertised as a big savings but honestly it was probably dollar for dollar. Maybe other stores are more reputable and can probably get deals from restaurants, say if someone doesn’t come to collect their order and now you get it for cheaper instead of the garbage can. As far as groceries though… did you know even the big chains discount products that are going to expire soon? Don’t waste your time with this app. Get yourself a deep freezer and buy products in bulk. That way you save some coin and have reserves should panic buying creep in from time to time. Cheers..Version: 22.5.11

Selling poor quality scrapsI finally got an end of day voucher and was shocked by what I received. Fruit peels and an apple core. Toogoodtogo said this was acceptable quality. Wouldn’t use this program again but I hope some better alternatives are available soon in Toronto.Version: 22.3.1

You’re SOL if your gluten-freeI hope you like pizza and other bread items because that’s pretty much all there is..Version: 21.10.0

Great idea but a long way to goThis review is for San Francisco. The concept is a great idea but it’s not very practical in SF. First, there aren’t many restaurants participating so in order to get food you often have drive across the city at a specific time. Waste of gas, time and a parking nightmare. Second, the portions are horribly small. You have to order two to three orders to complete a real meal. Thus, you’re paying full price for mystery food that you might not even like. Last, the apps review system is misleading which is a big strike against the app. You’ll see the reviews say something like “80% of users give this restaurant at least three stars”. That sounds like a good review “80%”. But it’s not. Three stars isn’t a good rating. And you can’t see comments about why that restaurant got such poor reviews. I ordered from two restaurants in one day and like one and the other was a joke. I spent over an hour driving around town to pick up the food. Not worth it in any sense. Great idea but not practical as current set up..Version: 21.6.3

Love the idea but a 50/50 experience so far!I live on my own so this is a great concept for me as I am quite happy to eat unusual combinations of food for a meal. I also hate how wasteful we are with food and have been buying from the reduced due to short date selections for a very long time, so this sounded a great idea to me! I have only bought 2 bags so far and my first bag was amazing! 3 decent ready meals! ☺️ They all went out of date the next day but were all freezable except the dessert and I was happy to eat that a day out of date….brilliant and a bit of a bargain too. My second bag was very disappointing sadly. 3 snack tubs of the same pasta that goes out of date 2 hrs after collection (10pm collection) and that had already been reduced to 94p and cannot be frozen, 2 sandwiches which had been reduced to 80p each (which both had salad so freezable but only after taking all the salad out) and some carrot sticks with humous snack pot which had been reduced to 45p. So I ended up paying £4 for goods that were for sale that day for £4.87. An 87p saving on items I can make little use of (will find out if the chickens like pasta tomorrow 🤷‍♀️) and would not have chosen plus the petrol to drive to pick up the food makes this bag actually expensive for what it is 😳 I will give the app another go but I do think the retailers should have some stronger guidelines on what the value on the day of the bag should be. I know it’s £4 but no one likes feeling ripped off..Version: 21.12.0

Good idea in theory, but flawedJust got the app really so I don’t have much to say about my own experience, but one of the first things I noticed is that you are very much at the whim of your location. For me, there is nothing in my immediate vicinity and I would have to go to the next town over just to get to the nearest place on the app. The town isn’t usually too far but even by car it’s at least 15 minutes away and I don’t drive to begin with. I don’t know about anyone else but I’m not hopping on a train just for to pick up a bag of mystery groceries. As for some of the other reviews I’ve seen there’s a few other problems that are an issue, namely the places just exploiting it as an opportunity to make more money from offloading the unappealing stuff which would otherwise be thrown out. I get that we’re not paying store price for this stuff and that it’s the stuff that hasn’t sold at the end of the day, but still, bit of a dick move to give someone a stale muffin that nobody wants and then make them pay too much for it. They could show a picture of it so that we get to see if we’d actually be willing to pay the stated price for the item, either that or maybe temper the price by quality..Version: 19.8.1

No protection for customersYour orders can be cancelled even at the moment of pick-up. And the app won’t help you at all. No protection for the buyers. Concept is good, but execution was not well thought of..Version: 21.6.3

Good Idea, But Needs Some TweaksLiving in a rural town there aren’t lots of options and more than 50% seems to be complete meals in my area rather than groceries, and I’ve yet to be able to access the grocery store, even following the instructions from the team who manage the app it seems impossible. Additionally there is a ratings box, but you can’t drill down to get more information, so for example it might say 93% of customers rate this supplier three stars or more, but there’s no way to know if that’s all bar one customer rating 3 out of 5. It’s a great concept but still needs a bit of work. Just reduced my rating as I’ve been watching the magic bag for Morrison’s this evening and it went from sales ended at 18:17 (the previous days sales slot) to sales ended for today without there being a window in which I could even attempt to purchase. Deleting the app, life’s too short..Version: 20.8.0

The idea is great, but the customer support solutions are rubbish.Had an order that didn’t meet standards that came up to £6, short explanation is there was smelly chicken that was leaking (had to throw the bags away) complained about this to customer service and they gave me a £5 voucher to use again with them for the trouble (which is already strange and annoying because the original purchase was £6) but whatever… They didn’t explain properly that in order to use this voucher to its fullest, I could only purchase ONE to go bag that’s worth exactly £5, but they’re smart because I have yet to see a shop that offers a bag that’s £5 on the dot, meaning I could only really buy one that’s less with the voucher, and if I saw a bag I liked that costed more than 5, the voucher would not cover it. I realised this after I purchased a £2.59 bag, only to realise that the other half of the £2.41 had disappeared (back to them I guess) which honestly is weird because a typical voucher with other companies lets you spend the amount however you like and doesn’t limit you. My original plan was to possibly get another bag from the same place in the future and pay the extra 18p out of my account but obviously that couldn’t happen. Might I also add I had a friend that was directed to a shop that didn’t exist on the app (led him to a block of flats that didn’t answer the door), and when contacting customer support they didn’t do anything about it and lost his money (I witnessed this first hand).Version: 22.5.0

Lack of transparencyHard to tell how good a restaurant is if I can’t read any reviews. I want to know how many customers have tried a place and what was their satisfaction level. A couple of places wrote that the food they had would best expired but still good to eat. I don’t want to leave it up to someone else to define what “good to eat” is. The category of it’s a surprise is too broad if I want to cut down on food waste I need to know if it will be a meal or just random items I will toss in my own trash. If it’s $4 for $12 worth of food it is not very much of a discount for a chance item. If I’m supposed to be buying the idea this is better for the environment and small businesses I would want to see how much or what percentage too good to toss takes. How exactly does it being a surprise help the environment if people receive food they don’t eat? App seems currently half baked with little options and no transparency. Interesting concept hope it improves..Version: 22.4.0

Good intention, Terrible App & Customer ServiceGood idea to “save surplus unsold food” but my experience was that the food was well beyond any reasonable quality (there was literally mold). Even worse, the “value” listed on the app is completely fabricated. I received 4 stale dinner rolls and was told they were worth $20+. That is completely unreasonable. Customer service refused to refund my $ and was rude. Don’t recommend this app..Version: 22.11.10

TLDR: They don’t care about customersI spent time and effort, and even hyped this app to a friend I brought along, only to have the Peets coffee tell me they had no food going bad and I wouldn’t be getting anything, even as I saw they had plenty of fresh food available. It was a very disappointing, unhappy, maybe even humiliating experience of a concept I once thought was cool. Both store and CS said “don’t worry, you won’t be charged.” The issue isn’t a refund, it’s the broken agreement. As a customer, I accept the risk of receiving random food selections. But to also accept the burden of getting to the store in a small time window, only to get turned away because nothing is going bad, is asking for too much, and there seems to be an indication this will continue to happen in the future, since the store chose to blame the app for any fault in inventory. If there is a disconnect in communication between store and app, why is the customer to take all the loss? In addition, I was never notified in advance, but only once I showed up to the counter. I talked to both Peets and TGTG CS again, and the canned responses tell me they couldn’t care less..Version: 22.11.10

Sends notification then cancelsReceived notification for pick up and while in transit the order gets cancelled. It has happened twice already over about 8 orders. Vendor blames app for posting without their consent. All around bad service from app and vendor. Unacceptable and a waste of time..Version: 22.10.0

Great Idea, Needs Better Diet PreferencesI love the idea of this app and Ive really enjoyed loved grabbing orders from places so far (bakeries have by far been the best). However, this app really needs to execute its dietary preferences better. Filtering restaurants by vegetarian / vegan entirely hides the places that do have vegetarian / vegan options. The ingredients and allergens section is basically useless because it gives the same “Your bag will be a surprise” message across every page. It will indeed be a surprise to me if I can’t eat anything I get from a place :| I think it would be a lot better if we could mark our preferences to a place in advance, then have the charge for the order go through once it’s picked up. If a restaurant can’t provide a vegetarian / vegan option, an order should just get cancelled, or moved ahead to a different day if possible. Something in-app instead of just asking at the restaurant! It feels like beggars being choosers to ask then, maybe ahead of time would be better..Version: 21.6.4

Nice idea badly executed and awful customer serviceBought two bags over the Christmas period. One when I went to collect I was told wasn’t available - but the manager went and packed me 8 bags of bread rolls and some pears - so we now have a freezer of bread rolls I have no idea what to do with. And the others cost with the labels on came to barely over £4 - it’s advertised as being £12 worth of food. When I contacted customer services they sent something saying oh well on the website price the items would be £12, but the items were out of date and had labels on them as reduced - meaning I could have walked into the store picked what I wanted from the reduced isle and gotten myself a better deal - or just saved the petrol and not gone at all. I asked for clarity and got exactly the same email word for word copy and pasted as a reply. Don’t use - save yourself some pennies and just check reduced isles yourself.Version: 22.12.1

Be prepared for disappointmentTwo out of the three things I went to pick were cancelled 15 minutes before pickup. By this time I’ve already travelled to the store wasting time and money for gas. Put in a complaint never had a reply other than the same standard automatic message. The store must have made a mistake..Version: 22.5.11

Food not guaranteedLike others have said, buying a bag in no way guarantees receiving something. Wouldn’t bother using again..Version: 21.9.0

Concept is good but app needs workI like the idea and concept of this but the app needs to be updated and changed. For example, I don’t like that I can’t hide or remove places I’m not interested in that are in my preferred area. It’s super annoying how they keep popping up.It also continues to give me preferences from 12 to 5 AM or whatever it is when I’ve selected I do not want to see those in my feed..Version: 22.5.11

Not worth itValue and quality of food did not match description. Company has no standards. The idea is good in theory..Version: 22.4.0

Needs a better review system…Need to allow users to review their previous experiences with stores in the app. I have to go to google and hope. Some of the bag reviews have been awful. Letting me see previous reviews from users would help me make decisions..Version: 22.11.10

Don’t believe the “value” of your dealAdvertised as $20 worth of food for $6 from the bakery of a local grocery store. Price tags were still on - $9 worth of food was received. Customer service said this was within the acceptable range and did nothing. Food was also all crappy processed food and all desserts, not the fresh bakery items as described. All food was thrown out. Will never buy again..Version: 22.9.0

No ValueHuge disappointment!! Cost of bag = cost of contents. You’re better off just shopping the “reduced” section of your local store. At least then you can choose what you get This app doesn’t prevent waste. It just boosts profit. If they wanted to reduce waste , the food would be donated. Instead, they can sell expired food and create the illusion of value. Equally disappointing was the dismissive response to my concerns from their customer service team. Seriously, don’t waste your time or money on this..Version: 22.3.1

Needs more informationI love the app, every mystery bag that I have gotten has been a great price and great items. My issue comes with the “ingredients and allergens” section. What is the point of having that if it’s A) going to say the same thing for each store/restaurant? and B) not give any details for what could potentially be an allergen in the bag? The way this section should be utilized is the store/restaurant should send in a list of ingredients that they use and the app should list what is commonly found in the bags (ex. “Bag may have soy based foods, egg based foods, meats, dairy products” etc. It’s very annoying and seems useless. It also then takes more time on the users end to do further research on the food that can be offered in the bags. If this was vetted a bit more, there would be more transparency and more people may be inclined to save bags. It doesn’t ruin the mystery if the stores tell the company what would potentially be in the bags that week or set up the allergens that day for the app, it would be really helpful for those that want to support those businesses and save the waste..Version: 22.6.10

Great deals bad appThe app itself is a great concept. Sell projects that would otherwise been thrown out if they hadn’t been sold at a discounted price. I haven’t been able to buy anything I want though. Everything is always sold out. There’s a very limited selection of sellers on the platform. The worst thing is there are no notifications for when product becomes available, so you have to check the app constantly to see everything being sold out. If I could ever use the app it would be great but I never can..Version: 22.6.0

Hit and Miss- Buyer BewareBuyer Beware, 2/3 pickups were terrible. 1.Open Yogurt expired 5 days ago. Tomato so rotten it was leaking in the bag. 2.a meal way over valued, feeling scammed. Won’t be using again..Version: 21.6.4

Waste of time and moneyBusinesses partners don’t have hours of operation updated. When you arrive places are either closed or “ran out of food” also the value for money on those that do serve you is ridiculous. I got 3 stale pastries from breakfast on an 8:30pm pick up. They were hard and not eatable. $4.99 in the trash. The other 2 “surprise” bags I claimed the restaurant was closed upon arrival and the company has a long behold process to refund the money you pay for this junk. It’s a great concept but it needs a strong desire and partnership between the app and the restaurants. If you don’t have anything good to donate you should remove your allocation, but how I felt with this particular bakery is they were counting exactly what they were supposed to give me for my $5 not for the $16-$18 value the app claims. Needs improvement and better quality service from partners..Version: 22.9.10

Turned up, no food left and still no money back!Very disappointing first outing using this app. Paid for food at Bean at Princess Dock, Liverpool. Received email confirming purchase, all going well. Turn up on time only to be told no food left! Staff member was very apologetic but still a negative experience. And I’ve still not received a refund! I don’t even know if this is normal practice? But if it is, it should be made clear on the website from the start. Also, the whole idea is to reduce or recoup the carbon footprint. But in reality, it’s just made it worth, travelling to the city wasting fuel, then leaving to go find food somewhere else. Further review: Dated 4/3/20- Hello. Well this is the second time I’ve had this very disappointing experience in exactly the same place. As such I won’t use the company Bean again. I also couldn’t find anywhere in your help centre, FAQ’s etc that states that on occasion (or more often than not) eateries can run out of food and it’s just plain tough. I feel by not mentioning this anywhere in the app, you are giving your customers a very poor experience and not enabling them to make fact based decisions as to wether they place an order or not. I had to travel (once again) some distance to collect my non existent order which, meant the carbon footprint left by my vehicle did not help to save the environment or prevent waste. Your thoughts would be welcomed...again..Version: 20.2.0

No worthGood idea but is not worth the price. You just get what it will cost you at regular price. It said you gonna receive 24$ value for 8$+tx at Pho Mymy, but only receive a surprise bowl of Pho. A bowl of pho is not 24$. Scam, scam and scam!!!.Version: 21.10.1

Okay, but two simple things could make it better:I’ve had both great and terrible experiences on the app, but these two things could make it better: Allow people to sort by distance! Two miles in NYC is a massive radius that makes no sense for people actually looking to get to know places in their neighborhoods. No sense in setting a location if I can’t go anywhere in the radius without spending more money to get there than it would take for me to buy other food. Allow for a more robust review system so people can see fellow customers’ reviews of individual establishments. If we’re all in this together, let’s be transparent about it..Version: 22.4.0

Needs improvementI loved using this app when I was travelling in Europe and was so excited to hear it was coming to Toronto. However, unfortunately it did not live up to its expectations and the concept of the app was not as accurately drawn out in Toronto. Firstly, most of the time, the food is only available within working hours (9-5) making it difficult to access it before or after work. This was in contrast to what I found in Europe where the surprise bags were mostly offered after work hours, making it accessible to a wider group of people. Secondly, as mentioned by other reviewers, the app mostly focuses on places in the downtown area for the most part (Bloor-Yonge and anywhere south from there on the subway line. If you don’t live in the area, you’re then required to drive or subway to get to it and as many of us know, at times the surprise bags can be cancelled last minute thus I don’t want to schedule time out of my day to have to commute somewhere, only for the bag to be cancelled. I think the purpose of the app is great but the partnership team in Toronto really need to look at building partnerships with restaurants, cafes and grocery stores in other areas (North York, East York, etc) rather than focusing so heavily on downtown Toronto because it’s just a let down and disappointment to open the app and only see new places added in the same area..Version: 21.6.4

The surprise part is whether or not you get the foodHere in the NJ ‘burbs, I drove 6 miles to a sports bar at the allotted time of 11:30 PM to midnight. After 10 minutes or so waiting, the manager came out and said there was no food left. I said, how can that be, I reserved it and paid for it? He said they have no food left and can’t predict what they will have at the end of the night, and they don’t make food specially for their surprise bags. The “surprise” he furthered explained, is maybe you get food or maybe you don’t, like shooting craps. I notified the app that I didn’t receive the food, and my order was “canceled”. I am unable to leave a review of the restaurant on the app. No one loses except the app user, who wastes time, gas and money..Version: 23.1.11

Good idea but not fully there yetThis is an excellent concept from and environmental and economic stance. However, many of these places already offer discounted food in day old items and therefore the savings is not accurate. I have bought three bags now and another with my wife’s app, and I can tell you that the money it says you saved is wrong because the price shown is the value of what you’re buying. So you need to subtract what you paid to see the actual savings. Also, some places are just Not worth it particularly when you give up warmth, freshness and choice. I got a bag of say old Jalapeño bagels for $3.29 When I could’ve paid $5 to pick the bag of day old bagels of choice. This “surprise idea might be enhanced by allowing customers To pick the types of surprise bags..Version: 22.9.0

Poor Customer ServiceI had ordered 3 bags and only received 1. When I contacted the business whom I picked up from, they were fantastic - apologetic and accommodating. However, they were unable to refund me directly as the pick up window was over and I was told to contact TooGoodToGo directly. I had assumed it would be an easy correspondence being that I paid for something I never received however customer service insisted I provide a photo of my surprise bag to assist me. Being that they responded the next day, I had already consumed my goodies and was unable to provide a photo. I explained that the issue was not with the goods in my one bag but that I paid for two others and never got them. Still they insisted that without a photo, they would not refund me. TooGoodToGo: I'm not quite sure how a photo of one bag would prove I didn't receive the other two. If you are assuming I am being dishonest, I could simply leave out the two bags. This solution makes no sense. I have called the bakery and they will provide me with two bags at my earliest convenience. I really hope you choose to reassess how you handle these claims in the future. Using logic in your assessment, along with trust in the word of your customer AND business partner (bakery) will result in more satisfaction and less disappointment..Version: 22.12.1

Nice in theory, but.......it needs work. a lot of work. the rating system seems intentionally misleading and vague. they interchange metrics (3 stars vs 4 stars) and hope you won’t notice. for instance, “80% of customers rate this place 3 stars or more” could mean that 80% rate the restaurant at 3 stars, 20% rate it at 4 stars, and 0% rate it at 5 stars... OR it could mean that 100% of customers rate the restaurant at 5 stars. just use a star system like every other rating website does? additionally, it’s super easy for restaurant owners to game the system. i paid $5 for a bag valued at $18.. i got a reheated can of Campbell’s soup that probably cost the restaurant less than $1. i lost money on food that i didn’t even eat (i love clam chowder but not old canned chowder) and i lost money on gas driving over there. i reached out to the company via the receipt for a refund and did not receive a response. for this to work, it needs to be fruitful and fair for both restaurants and customers, there need to be consequences for restaurants who cheat customers and they need to have a responsive customer service team for when these things happen. buying a “mystery bag” of anything requires trust and i don’t feel like this company presents itself as being very trustworthy. i hope they get things ironed out..Version: 21.6.4

No notificationsIf a bag becomes available or a favourite becomes available you get no notifications so you need to be glued to your phone to see what is available which I don’t appreciate I have other things to do then to be glued to my phone..Version: 22.6.0

Not great for vegans (in my area at least)I really love the idea of this app and there is a button to click to save preferences. The vegetarian button seems to work fine but the vegan button doesn’t. It shows me vegetarian food, pastries, etc, sometimes even bags that may contain meat. It doesn’t say “sorry, absolutely no vegan bags in your area right now (or ever)”, it says “based on your preferences…” and then proceeds to show me stuff that is completely unsuitable. And now I feel like a stereotypical vegan moaning about the lack of vegan stuff but seriously, it’s so frustrating to get my hopes up all the time only to find nothing. How hard is it to only put veg in a bag? How hard is it to ensure the app only shows vegan bags if you’ve clicked the vegan preference? Annoying, but I imagine less ‘fussy’ people would find some great bargains..Version: 22.5.10

Poor customer service, savings not as advertisedDon’t bother, inflated “savings” for expired food paired with terrible customer service. Update to developer response. We contacted you by email, sent photos and you chose to arbitrarily close the compliant..Version: 22.4.0

Needs policy changesGood at first, then restaurants started posting things they couldn’t fulfill- I arrived to pick up right at the beginning of the pickup window and many places either didn’t know they had an order or would cancel the order after I had already arrived due to lack of old product. There should be a policy that if they post an order they have to fulfill it (even if they have to use new product). The number of hours I’ve wasted walking too and from these places to get nothing is ridiculous!.Version: 21.9.0

DissapointedI can't trust an app which relies upon clients missing the times for collecting their items as a part of their business model. I was less than 10 minutes late because of an emergency that came up, I wrote to them asking to please change my order for some other time, but they offered no further help and just kept my money. I would have understood if they kept a fraction of what I paid as a penalty, or if they did this with someone who repeatedly missed their items, but this would have been the first time I'd done anything like that after having used the app 4-5 times before, and the situation really wasn't under my control. People use this app mainly because they're on a budget, so this experience was extremely frustrating. The client support I received after having my very first problem wasn't nice. They lost my trust. Be careful..Version: 19.10.3

Be carefulHave to be careful with what foods you get. And the places you go. In one bag I got food that was so old I was unable to eat.I also found a some glass in the bag. It had to be thrown out. And I throw out $3.99 with it..Version: 22.4.0

Rock hard CheeseburgersOrdered from TooGoodToGo for the 3rd time from a bakery. Description was confectionery goods and baked goods. I received rock hard bread sticks and cheeseburgers. I could barely snap the bread in half. They had denied a refund because they said it was categorized as other. So they are ok with selling probably week old rock hard cheeseburgers that were sitting in the open all day developing bacteria for you to get food poisoning. AVOID THIS APP. They will not give you a refund for inedible food..Version: 22.4.0

Value of timeSure, you can save $7 on a meal if you are willing to spend an hour favouriting and securing a deal (one of 5 spots). Totally not worth it, support is terrible, you literally get a bag of expired rotten food for half the regular price that will be totally uneatable. But lucky you- you are one or only 5 people to get this scam of a deal..Version: 22.9.10

Entirely dependant on the establishmentMy experience so far: Rather than getting an $18 worth of food for $6, you get $6 worth of food for $6. AND you have no choice in what you get. So rather than a mechanism to prevent food from going to waste, it’s a mechanism to prevent sales from going to waste. One of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time, but human nature is what it is..Version: 21.6.4

Ok but please offer more Vegan / Veggie optionsThis is a fantastic app that I love and have had some really decent bits of food however, as a Vegan there just isn’t enough options. So when ordering a mystery bag you can get a heck load of meat and just have to take that gamble which is so unfortunate! I understand this may be down to stores but highly recommend it’s taken into consideration as I think they will sell like Hot cakes! If a restaurant offers vegan / veggie foods then there should be an option for a magic bag, yes there may not always be availability but there isn’t always with a regular bag. I work with someone (meat eater) who bought a magic bag that was full of vegan bits and they threw it all in the bin so it just completely defeats the object! I know not everyone will do this but it’s certainly something to think about! Still a great app but that’s why I haven’t given it 5 stars..Version: 21.9.0

Great app to reduce waste but Mixed feelingsI am 100% supporting the goals to reduce food waste and happily satisfied with the food from many biz who are happy to do the right thing. However, I don’t support rating the participants unless there is something wrong with their food. I have got food from different places but found that some of them were rated low just because the amount of food was smaller than others, even though it was still over 50% off. I believe quite a few people are rating the biz like yelp and Google. I feel bad if the ratings hurt the biz owners feelings while they are doing whatever they can to help save food and also make us happy to save food and the cost. Another thing I noticed is that the exact time to check their availability was added in recent updates which is most likely the cause of ridiculously high competition to get the limited amount of mystery bags from popular stores… I hope the time of release would be kept secret so that everyone has chance of getting one by luck!.Version: 22.5.0

Great concept but many areas that need improvementSome features to add 1) Please include a Halal option when filtering stores/restaurants 2) Please include a delivery option as some places are too far from where I live 3) A way to communicate with the stores before you purchase so you don’t end up buying something that goes against your dietary needs 4) I think it would be great if TooGoodToGo could be integrated into other delivery apps like UberEats. This app is missing features that would make it holistic and more convenient for users and I think integrating it with other delivery apps would help and reduce all the food waste from all the restaurants that are already on these delivery apps. Hope this helps InshaAllah..Version: 22.10.0

Good, But App Could Be ImprovedThis is a great service that helps to fight food waste. It’s also a nice way to discover businesses in your area that you might not have known about and sample their offerings. However, the app itself could use some improvement. One issue is that there are some points in the day when the data in the app fail to load and you are stuck at looking at the animated Too Good To Go logo in a white box - sometimes this occurs in the middle of the night but I have also seen it take place during the middle of the day. I hope this never happens to me when I’m going to pick up an order and need to show it to someone in a store and swipe in the app to collect. Another issue is that the distances shown in the map are straight line (or “as the crow flies”) and don’t take into account the street grid or bodies of water such as rivers. While this approach might work fine for some areas it isn’t best suited for a dense urban environment where there are numerous businesses. Even when I have the filter set to the minimum 1 mile distance I see locations that are actually much further away because they would first require walking to a subway station or to a ferry landing to cross a river. I have found that it’s easier to judge distances by looking at the “Map” view instead of the “List” view under the “Browse” option, but there is no “Map” view available under your “Favorites”..Version: 22.9.11

Poor customer serviceFood is a bit hit and miss - I’ve had some good meals and also paid £3 for a bag of bread rolls that were growing green mould the next day (collected at 4pm). Last weekend I ordered and paid for a meal, waited until 9pm to eat, drove to collect it and found the shop closed. After knocking on the door I spoke to the manager who said they had been closed for refurbishment for 3 weeks and he had no idea why Too Good To Go had taken my order. I was left hungry when it was too late to buy from anywhere else on a Sunday night, and they had already taken my money. The I sent a message to customer service to complain and have heard nothing - they did refund my money but I haven’t had a word of apology, explanation or even any kind of acknowledgment that I had my time wasted and was really messed about. Not sure I’ll use this App again it seems to be more trouble than it’s worth..Version: 21.2.0

Horrible customer serviceI order off this app several times a week. For the most part I’ve had a wonderful experiences. However in the few times that I’ve gotten orders from new vendors and the item has been inedible or should’ve been in the trash I’ve reached out to the customer service and have not been able to get a refund. I have even submitted documentation of what I have received but in their eyes if it still looks like food then it must be edible. I literally got wilted and mushy produced from a local grocer in town and they told me that that food could repurpose for some thing so therefore I shouldn’t get a refund. Another time I received food that was totally in edible and again was told technically I received $16 worth of food for $4.99 so I should be happy. The customer service on this app definitely needs to be better..Version: 22.2.0

Don’t censor mePlease allow us to write proper reviews of the establishments we purchase from. Your generic, pre determined, all positive reviews we get to choose from don’t reflect what we really want to share with others..Version: 22.9.0

Initial FeedbackI originally downloaded this some time ago, it was up and coming and very little uptake on the restaurants, one sushi place if I remember rightly so didn’t get to use it. I saw an advert this week and thought I’d give it another go. Very disappointed to see that there’s not many more to choose from in a city with over 800 eating establishments. Of the 10 or so listed, so far there’s only been 1 hotel and 2 Greene King pubs available, all the others say sold out but it says that all the time and the sold out time never changes so I very much doubt they were offering anything to begin with. I can’t believe in a city that thrives on it’s dining scene that only two companies are actually offering food. I’d like to think if they aren’t using this idea they are instead giving it away to homeless shelters. It’s a great concept but disappointed in the uptake..Version: 20.1.1

Good concept but needs workThe concept of this app is great as it prevents food waste, but it seems more catered to restaurants than to customers. There is a lack of a review system besides star ratings, and it would be nice to get an idea of what to expect even if things change on a daily basis. Also, customers are only allowed cancellation up to 2 hours before pickup time. However, the store can cancel your order whenever. The fact that I had an order cancelled 20 minutes beforehand was bothersome considering how I made the drive and was given such short notice that my order was cancelled. I understand it’s hard to determine how inventory changes on a day by day basis, but why are restaurants available for next day pickup rather than making it available hours before pickup so that they can at least determine the amount to distribute on the app so it minimizes cancellation?.Version: 21.9.0

Ups and DownsOn the plus side we’re saving food from being thrown out, but like a previous reviewer said, sometimes you get a good deal while other times you don’t. The reservation system is first come first serve, and items can run out while you’re in the middle of paying which is annoying. The reviewing system could use some work, I think allowing us to give a mix of good AND bad traits rather than just good OR bad traits (which depends on the star rating) during a review would really make reviews more fair. It would also help to show if there are bad traits associated with a restaurant, rather than just good ones, or allow bad traits to balance out good traits (so maybe x people say there’s good value while y people say the opposite)..Version: 22.5.11

Not impressedI rarely write reviews, and I really wanted to like this, but… Even though I live in a college town full of eateries, there is just a very small selection shown on this app, and most of it is for pastries. That being said, I have only used this service once, and it was a bad experience… when I got to the restaurant at said time to pick up my food they were closing up and were completely out of food. So I biked 15 minutes each way for no reason and then had to wait a week or more to get refunded. There was also no way for me to write the restaurant and they’re terrible & rude service on the app. There are no reviews on the app, just a point system that is not terribly helpful..Version: 23.2.10
