CookBook - Recipe Manager for Negative User Reviews

Unfair to old users who paid flat rate for appI purchased this app as a one time fee. Now they changed it to a monthly subscription. If I knew that I would have chose the other competing app that’s still a one time fee. You should give customers who paid for the app the option of no annual or monthly fee and include ads or something else you can monetize if you need your costs of upkeep are so high..Version: 2.0.5

Blackmailing Customers by transition to Subscription ModelIt is not acceptable to provide existing customers with a trial subscription. They invested in your product, and now you want to charge them monthly and yearly. If you want to change to a subscription model, fine. But don’t force existing customers who invested time and energy into adding data to your app, only to find you will delete it, or render it useless if they don’t pay. An absolute disgrace. I’ll be moving my data to Recipe Keeper. You should only be charging new customers. This is dishonest, dishonourable and disrespects the people who built your reputation. Another reason I will be transitioning to Recipe Keeper is that they offer offline access and a much more full featured application..Version: 2.0.5

Former original cookbook userThis used to be my mainstay, I have well over 300 recipes in this app including originals and was once a lifetime purchaser. Then cookbook updated and made it subscription based. Prior Lifetime buyers were given a grace period I guess one would call it, before having to hop on subscription base for the updated app or default into basic (free). Those who defaulted to basic now had 40 recipes to work with which I guess is more than what the non lifetime purchasers got, yay. Since I’m over the 40 I’m constantly told that I need to delete recipes or subscribe in order to look at the recipes I already have stored. I’m not even actively using the app to try to save recipes. Just view my stored ones. Even sorting it to most recent ads directed doesn’t allow me to view my “40” instead it is just a “subscribe or delete recipes pop up” I can’t help but feel cheated. Now there’s an option for “lifetime” purchase. The lifetime of the latest upgrade until they come out with a cookbook 3.0 or whichever one they are on and the cycle continues? I understand they have a business to run but I am weary of their practices now and have went with another app instead. Good news if people are interested in subscribing it’s cheap at least and I did like the UI. So if you’re on the fence maybe they can have your money. I have no intention on being a patron..Version: 2.2.165

Account set up requiredYou have to set up an account to use it, even if you don’t want to share across devices. I would like a refund.Version: 1.60870

Can’t even upload a recipe from the food networkI am beyond disappointed with this app. The app looks cute but does not deliver. Every time I use the app i get so frustrated and think why do I bother, then I attempt again a few days later and have the same feeling. You can’t even upload a recipe from the Food Network ... literally on tv, yet the app does not recognize this site. Now it recognizes the site and will import the photo but no ingredients or steps. I have to copy and paste all my recipes and it is more tedious than any app I’ve used. I am infuriated by the makers of such a garbage app. Like I can’t understand how you can sell an app that doesn’t actually do the job that it’s supposed to do. I would say 1 of 10 recipes I try to import work and the rest I’m stuck copy and pasting back and forth from the original site. Please improve this app..Version: 1.60870

Does not work with Lockdown onIt is an excellent app that I rely on for my everyday cooking. I am happy to have gotten the lifetime license and do not regret it for a second. However, I recently implemented lockdown on ios and immediately after the app no longer works. I know it is lockdown because when I disable the feature, the Cookbook app works. Unfortunately my online security and privacy are more important than accessing my recipes. If you can fix this so I don’t have to choose, I’d be happy to change my rating to 5 stars..Version: 2.2.165

A great product that fell victim to the subscription modelI bought Cookbook a while ago after looking for an all in one recipe and shopping manager. I loved it from the first use and it’s import feature saved a lot of time. Then the dreaded day came and the email went out informing everyone they were moving to a subscription model and those of us who already had to pay would they have to pay again to unlock their Legacy lifetime access. I would have, begrudgingly, accepted this as the price wasn’t too bad but their latest update has completely broken the app for me. The import feature has somehow gotten worse and importing recipes has become more of an editing challenge than it is worth. The new layout is awful for using the iPad in the kitchen as they have tried to cram everything on one screen rather than the older version which had instructions full screen. I could go on but unfortunately in this world there is no such thing as ownership with these apps anymore and Cookbook has become the latest victim. I would encourage people to find another app..Version: 2.1.0

Not great for importing printed recipesWaste of money. I can only get half a recipe imported through ocr because it’s limited to using 3 pictures - if your recipes span multiple pages forget it...useless.Version: 1.60750

I used to love but now Its going nowhere…I purchased this app over 2 years ago since then minimal changes to the app have released. Although their UI and gorgeous design over-shine, their planner is one of the worst I’ve seen. I can’t believe they don’t have drag and drop for at least desktop! It’s extremely tedious to plan meals on here and it makes me more anxious! Secondly, they released a subscription model that although they are giving those who purchased the app previously, like me, a year free they will be losing a LOT of people based solely on the fact that nothing has changed and it is not worth yet ANOTHER subscription. The feature that would make me stay would be an updated planner or pantry inventory introduction.Version: 2.0.5

Where is the loyalty?!First of all, this app is brilliant. I’ve used it for years and loved storing recipes on it. However, I already paid for this app and now I can’t use it anymore because they’ve decided to move to a subscription model? I can’t believe anyone thought it was a good idea to expect people who have already paid for the app to pay more?! What a horrendous retention marketing strategy that is. I won’t be paying for it again, why should I? I should be getting a refund for what I’ve already paid actually. I have no issue with you moving to a subscription model but you shouldn’t be charging legacy customers who already paid for the app. Disgusting..Version: 2.1.0

Nearly PerfectWould be great if you could have headers in the Ingredients or instructions ... for example if you were separating sauce ingredients and steps from the main part of the dish to be combined later..Version: 1.60870

Don’t botherBought this app for a flat fee. It did everything I needed and was one of the only cook book apps that wasn’t trying to gouge its customers with a pointless subscription model. This was a month ago and low and behold they are now moving to a subscription model. There really isn’t anything useful which can be added to this app that necessitates a subscription. It does what it needs to do and anything further is purely to justify a money grabbing, customer robbing subscription. Annoyed to have spent a month inputting recipes only to find its now pointless seen as there is no way I’m going to continually pay for something which I have already payed for. I’ll be asking for a refund..Version: 2.0

I paid for the app, I should be able to keep having it for freeI paid for the app and to have unlimited scans and receipts back when it was a paid app. Now I will get a one year subscription to have the same features and more. After that I will have to pay for the same features I bought. This is flat out theft..Version: 2.0

CookbookAway too annoying to use.Version: 1.60870

Scummiest Business EverI purchased the app. Then, 2 years later, they revoked my purchase and are now requiring a subscription. Is this even legal?.Version: 2.1.0

Lovely app but it’s disappointing customer service is nonexistent.I really like the look of this app and it wonderfully imported a recipe from a website. I had been using a different app for awhile but I wanted features that it didn’t offer. Therefore, I searched for awhile and read the great reviews about CookBook. I was so excited that I could transfer my recipes from the other app. So I try to import them and CookBook recognizes the files but doesn’t pull the data from the files. I contacted support last week and I’ve never gotten a response. Kind of disappointing. Maybe I’ll feel differently after I use it for awhile but it’s not useful at all right now because I’m going to have to manually add my recipes that should have been able to be imported..Version: 1.60870

Unethical business practicesI paid for this app two years ago when it was not a subscription service. If I had known it would be turned into a subscription I would have just used a free app, or even saved pdfs to a drive on my computer. Now I am being forced, after purchasing an item, to pay for that same item AGAIN? When Microsoft updates it’s operating system, does your old windows 7 stop working? In what universe is it reasonable to ask someone to pay forty dollars for a “lifetime subscription” to something they’ve already purchased? How do I know that in two more years, the app won’t decide that they need to add new features and charge me another forty dollars, why not a hundred this time? Giving old users a free lifetime subscription is the only thing that makes sense in this context. I used to recommend this app to people, now I’m just going to uninstall it. I can’t spend more of my money on a company with such unethical business practices. I would recommend everyone considering this purchase to reconsider based on this review as well..Version: 2.0.5

OCR Doesn’t WorkThis app is great in many ways. Unfortunately i have been using the app for about a week now, and it has started to crash every time I upload a recipe, and I am forced to re-do it again. On top of this, it lacks significantly when it comes to the Optical Character Recognition (OCR), which is why I purchased this app. I wanted to load all my cookbooks into a single app so I had access to all my recipes on my phone. However I was very disappointed when I actually attempted to upload the images. The character recognition is completely off, where is seems unable to pick up any fractions (a big part of most ingredient list). After a while I decided to time myself, and count the errors. It took me over 8 minutes to input a recipe, most of this time was correcting the errors (I counted 20 in the ingredients list alone - there were only 18 ingredients). This was after reading the reviews and the subsequent replies from the developer - I can guarantee you, it’s not poor lighting or picture quality, it’s poor software. The first recipe book I picked up to scan has around 250 recipes in it. It would take me 33 hours to load the recipes from one book. Let alone the other 50 books I have!.Version: 1.60840

Dishonest appI payed for this app years ago, could access it unlimited, Then they decided you could only add more recipes with a monthly subscription, but you could still view your recipes, Ok, so I payed for a few months, was not using it a lot, so I unsubscribed. Then they decided you can’t even view your recipes anymore unless you pay $4 a month instead of $2, that’s a bit rich, it’s a good app but you’re tactics to get customers to pay is a little dishonest..Version: 2.2.175

Great for recipe storage terrible for meal planning and shopping lists managementExtremely disappointed with my purchase. Some great features around storing and importing recipes but terrible meal planning and shopping list function with no ability to amend description of added items to become combined quantities on the same item across different recipes. Unable to pick and select specific items in the ingredient list because you already have them in your pantry or the ability to delete items in added list. Also the prompt to save the grocery list each time you exit is incredibly annoying. It should be an automatic save with the option to delete all for a new list. The RecipeKeeper app which I was using previously is way better in that space. Wish I stuck with the pro version of their app rather than paid for this simply because of a more attractive UI..Version: 1.60870

Don’t waste your time or money!A recipe/meal planner app without nutrition analyzer? What?! How can you even call this a meal planner app when it doesn’t analyze recipes/ingredients for nutrition info? That’s what meal planning is all about. I guess you can paste in the nutritional content, but that means I either A) Have to upload recipes from the internet that already have that detail AND I can’t deviate from the recipe (like change ingredients to make it healthier) or B) I have to upload it to another app (like MyFitnessPal) to first work out the recipe the way I want it and then upload it to this app and then manually enter the nutritional info. Goodness forbid I should want to add a physical paper/book recipe. I’d have to take the extra step of manually adding that to another app (painstaking) to get the nutritional first. I’m disappointed that I paid money for this. I wish I could get the money back and never see this app again. In this day and age, I cannot believe they haven’t linked up to a food database for REAL cookbook and meal planning abilities..Version: 1.9565

Great app, needs a bit of workI’ve been using this for years and have paid for the legacy subscription (despite paying for the app in the first place which feels a bit sneaky) but I really wish the OCR scan worked. It crashes every single time I try to use it and I’m getting bored of having to keep manually inputting each recipe, it takes ages. It’s really irritating when you pay for something to save time, yet it actually adds hassle. It’s a shame because it’s great otherwise.Version: 2.2.175

Theft!I paid to own this app outright precisely to avoid getting sucked into a money pit: years of investments in a niche personal tool that does one little thing. Now I’m being told that I will be unable to continue using the app going forward, except in read-only mode after one year of “free” subscription. The problem is twofold: (1) I relied on the nature of an outright purchase and have not been in a hurry to digitize recipes, so I have very little content to date. So I will basically have gifted the developers my money for a loan rather than a purchase. SaaS is a loan. No thank you. (2) The app, if I do rush to fill it with content now, will be useless for the very reason I bought it in the first place: data consolidation. The last thing I want is recipes spread across different apps. Should I never add another app to my personal catalog again? Or should I waste my time and homescreen space switching between catalogs? Both are terrible options. This is, frankly, fraud and theft. I paid for X and you are taking it away and replacing it with Y. I do not consent. Why not just grandfather legacy users into lifetime plans?.Version: 2.1.0

Greedy developersI have previously loved this app and spent a lot of time building up my cookbook to what I have today. However having purchased as a once-off I’ve seen today that they are now moving to a subscription model, how can they do that? Surely when you purchase once on the basis that you don’t want a subscription service they can’t just change it for existing users?! So greedy. Understand if you messed up your revenue model and now need to re-coup costs from any new users but how can you purchase something on the premise of one thing and then change to another?! How do I get a refund!! I don’t want to pay subscription so do I just lose all my recipes?? This is the reason I never trust app developers these days..Version: 2.0

Great to scan recipes, shopping list is clunkyFabulous to scan in recipes from apps & books and import from websites. Ok meal planning function. But the shopping list function is clunky. You have to choose a date period for the shopping list, it would be better if you could add any recipes to the shopping list to cater for meal prep. Also the shopping list sections are incompatible with shopping aisles and generally foods are not grouped well. Would be good if you could move the items into sections before shopping.Version: 1.60870

Which to sub model after paid for appI’ve been using this for a while and it was great. It now a 1 star app that I’ll be removing as it was a paid app that is now forcing people to move to a subscription service to continue using. They should not be forcing people that already paid for the app into this new system or force them to may again to get a lifetime subscription. They should just get the lifetime sub since they already bought the app or they should have released the new version as a new app or feature pack to not effect the people that just want the a fully working version they ALL READY paid for. I get needing money to add new features but you’re punishing the early adapters that bought the app and help them grow. Why not just make it an optional paid feature pack..Version: 2.0

DisappointedI’ve tried a few recipe apps over the years and I finally thought I had found ‘the one’. This one is the full package with its intuitive and easy interface. Well thought out with everything you need to create a life time collection. It was reasonably priced and although I rarely pay much for apps this one was worth it. However... today I received an email saying the developers are now going to charge subscription fee to use the app. Fine, I understand that they need to make a living and by all means charge future customers on this basis but for those of us who have spent many hours building up a recipe collection believing we had paid a one off payment for life and now will have to keep paying.... sorry but that is unfair and unacceptable..Version: 2.0

Very DisappointingAfter a lot of initial research we decided on the Cookbook app, largely due to the fact that it was a lifetime purchase with no ongoing fee. So you can imagine our surprise when Cookbook advised they were moving to an annual fee and we would have no choice other than to pay up or lose all of our recipes. We feel as though we have been lied to and cheated out of our money, which is sad considering it has been a great app. Very disappointing indeed!.Version: 2.0.5

Good app but can be a bit complicated at firstAlmost none of my recipes uploaded correctly so you are basically left typing them all in. However, once they’re in the app they’re great. Just make sure that you update all of the settings before you start. Initially I had some challenges with the amounts changing because the recipes were scaling based on the number of servings..Version: 1.60870

Loved the app, but…I purchased the app because it was an amazing concept and I love being able to organize all my recipes and access it easily. Unfortunately, we now have to pay for a monthly suscription. I am not using the app that often. For me it was an app I can rely on to store all my recipes at the same place. Maybe a subscription plan is not the right fit for me..Version: 2.0.5

I paid for the app and now they changed it to subcribtionI think it is not fair that they can change a paid app to subscription, I now only have a year longer that I can use it without paying more and before it was a lifetime. I don’t think it’s fair.Version: 2.0

They switched to subscription model… after I paid the one-time feeI loved this app and all its features, so much so that my husband and I each bought it at its one-time upfront price. Now after taking the time to upload all our recipes, we’re being pushed to pay monthly to maintain access. This is absolute theft for those who purchased previously. If you need more revenue add ads or switch the model for new customers- don’t double bill the existing ones..Version: 2.0.5

Good App but it glitchesIt’s a good app but sometimes the screen freezes or it glitches. I have to turn my phone off and on again to fix the glitches. Also, they don’t have conversions for Australian measurements, so I can’t use the conversion feature. It has all the makings of an amazing app so if they can fix the glitches and make it Aussie-friendly it will be 5 stars for sure!.Version: 1.60845
