Calorie Counter by Cronometer for Negative User Reviews

App is getting buggier with every releasePretty explanatory. Also, I feel this is one of those concepts that was amazing in the beginning and went downhill in time. I’ve used Cronometer from its early browser days- excellent since then at what it does. Since they expanded and grew, the made poor choices along the way. Firstly, the team is downright incompetent. Customer service/ support team is probably founder’s extended family/ friends or just unqualified for the job. Absolute garbage at handling questions, feature requests. Take a look on the support forums if you don’t believe me. Downright embarrassing. Secondly, whoever is in charge of the app probably learned coding in 2 months from online tutorials- which is not bad, just not good enough to charge money for. After years of requests from basic functionality like time stamps, they finally introduced the feature a couple of years back and immediate made it paid. I walked them through 2 errors they had made, but eventually just gave up when I realized they’ll never figure out how to properly integrate their app with apple health. All in all it’s my preferred app since I loathed the big fitness tracker apps, but it’s basic database search functionality for micronutrients- the thing everyone used Cronometer for, has been there since day one. Everything else is just trash. Hopefully the founder decides to hire the right people soon, preferably talented professionals this time..Version: 3.4.5

Great app, but not able to access because of “Internet access”I’ve used this app previously (love it), and am ready to do another 3 month cycle of tracking. Each time I try to log in through the app, it keeps saying I’m unable to because of internet access. This should not be an error - I’ve tried through data only, wifi only, deleting and re-downloading the app, restarting my phone. Nothing worked. I tried accessing my account through safari, the server was blocked. I was able to log on through my desktop and access the app through my iPad. So I’m assuming something is wrong with the app functionality on my phone? But nothing has changed since I last used the app. I tried to click through to “app support” but am not able to because I get the same “server is blocked” message. Can someone help me?.Version: 4.11.2

Great for some things but I think American centredAs titled. Some of the nutritional info is great but uk brands not so much. A lot of Tesco brand stuff has ‘no data’ for most of the more specific nutrients, doesn’t break down protein types etc so this is frustrating. No basic stuff like Scottish salmon just fresh from a fishmonger the way we’d tend to buy it, whereas there’s Alaskan salmon and other types I suppose more common in America? So good but need to keep an eye on what details are missing from some things if you want a thorough breakdown.Version: 4.8.0

No a FanSo far I am not overly impressed with this app. When searching for foods like an Apple or Avacado one might think the raw fruit would come up first and instead for many items I am sifting and searching. It would also be better if foods were verified so you could choose it instead again, of searching for what seems closest to what you’re looking for. I am using a Nutrition Coach who has the Pro account and my account did not sync so all my food is pumped together instead of Breakfast lunch dinner etc…. Cannot update weight daily. Overall I prefer MyFitness Pal and the features they offer even without paying for a premium or updated version..Version: 4.7.0

Great PotentialBetter than all other food trackers I have tried in the level of detail that it provides. However, the lack of data makes it impractical (most products I scan ask me to input ALL the nutritional data myself; there is a lot). So frustrated that one of the more mainstream tracking apps (MyFitnessPal or Lifesum) doesn’t provide greater breakdown of micronutrients, as it’s important for us veggies to make sure we get enough Vitamin B12!.Version: 2.2.3

Could use some improvementsI've been using this app for a couple years now and it's helped me lose a significant amount of weight in that time. While it's great, there are a few features that are missing or wrong. 1. A lot of the calorie counts for food entries are plain wrong, and are usually lower what the actual calorie count is. It requires me to do a math problem every time I want to log something. This is frustrating because it applies to common foods too. The solution to this would be for the food entries (at least the most popular ones) to go through a reoccurring review to make sure that they're accurate. 2. Today, I was logging a recipe that I had created. One of the items in that recipe was only measured in fluid ounces. When I go to log a portion of that meal, I realized that the weight was entirely off! It hadn't considered the item that was in fluid ounces when it totaled the entire weight of the recipe. When I looked closer, the app just said "grams unknown". All it would take is for the app to do a simple conversion from fl oz to grams. Now I am paranoid about the accuracy of every recipe I create in that app. As I come closer to my weight goal, it becomes apparent that every calorie counts, and if I cannot depend on this app to be accurate, then I no longer have reason to use it..Version: 3.7.5

AlcoholThis app was working but now it’s adding random alcohol amounts to my daily totals... even to days that have already been completed..Version: 3.5.1

Useful but still has a long way to goI’m using the Gold Status version on subscription; many incredibly useful options here, however, if you live in the UK, My Fitness Pal’s database includes many more products. Hopefully this will increase with time. A bigger problem is that you have to be really careful as with some products in Cronometer’s database only certain ingredients are listed, and micros are very often not, so you could be misled into thinking that you’re not including enough, say, calcium in your diet and then over consuming it. This could be especially tricky with those micronutrients that are toxic at levels higher than recommended, where individuals can be topping up their levels with supplements when they don’t need to. Those products should probably not be listed at all until all of the ingredients can be included in the charts..Version: 3.1.3

Don’t waste your money.I tried this app (gold) on the encouragement of a nutritionist. The only nice thing about it was the ability to scan the barcode on some items. The oracle is neigh on useless. It’s a lot of work. You can’t download outside recipes. When entering recipes or ingredients, or foods; not all of the measurements are available. It’s all decimals and it wouldn’t always register the entire amount I entered. For example; .25 would change to .2. 1/8 was impossible such as 1/8 of a tsp. That’s 0.125 and it wouldn’t stay .125. If you don’t have a food scale, forget it. Some basic items didn’t exist, only a brand of something. (Anaheim peppers. Only Michelle’s is available. I didn’t buy Michelle’s Anaheim peppers!) Can’t get a refund. Didn’t even use it for a month. Purchased through App Store so Cronometer will not refund my money. Apple says this subscription doesn’t qualify for a refund. Worst purchase ever..Version: 2.3.5

This app is so badMy favourite part of this app is how it makes you login every single time you open it. So convenient..Version: 4.9.3

Convenient but issues after updateI like the convenience and ease of adding foods to the diary. I am not forced to choose a meal to categorize the food eaten. however, this last update has caused problems. I workout 7-10 hours a week at moderate to high intensity. my daily caloric suggestion was around 1500 calories a day (I set my own macros). after the update, it changed my calorie goal to around 1000 calories a day. that doesn’t make sense and if someone was trying to follow the caloric guidelines they would be in some trouble. my hour-ish long workout this morning burned 800 calories. there’s no way it’s health to only eat 200 calories more than you are burning with exercise alone. I do have it set for an aggressive weight loss, but 1000 calories or less a day is not realistic for someone who is working out..Version: 3.19.0

I love the layout and everything but these 2 things...1. Even when I’ve scanned the barcodes on the foods and they’ve come up, the carbs level may be quite a bit more than it actually is, or same with fat or protein depending on the product. I’m trying to plan my meals to get enough protein but Cronometer usually doesn’t record all the protein of each product and usually way too many carbs than there actually is. 2. No restaurant food to log- if I’ve eaten out I can’t log what I’ve eaten as it’s only shop bought foods you can log. Looked at so many other apps and I just don’t like any of them as much- on Cronometer the amount you get for free is so much more than any other app, just please please fix issue 1 especially as it’s a big deal breaker!!.Version: 3.3.2

App freezesHey, I love the app but it constantly freezes for 5-10 seconds when opening it after not using it for a few hours. I noticed it started happening after getting my Apple Watch- maybe something is broken with the integration? Either way it’s unfortunately making me want to move to a different app. Edit: I emailed support and never got a response. Lowering to 1 star.Version: 4.12.1

One main flaw with Apple WatchExcellent app with one flaw that made me regret my subscription, and enough that I have stopped using the app altogether. It somehow drains the battery of your apple watch to such an extent that you won’t have 8 hours of use. You can track you calorie intake but can’t use the data from your watch as it won’t work long enough to record your calorie expenditure... the whole thing becomes useless. The developers are aware of the issue but no solution yet..Version: 3.3.7

Room to ImproveHaving massive issues with loading the app, loading foods, creating foods and entering the data. Even after all the updates I still end up writing my food down and entering it on my laptop at the end of the day through the desktop website. There is also very minimal Australian foods in the data base. Apart from that the concept is great..Version: 3.6.0

PoorA good app for tracking nutrition but: hard to upload and define new foods, too many intrusive and limiting ads plus log in is often unavailable rendering the concept useless as one then has to write down consumed items on a scrap of paper to add when log in has become available. Poor. The flakiest app I use. Problems synching Apple Health to the app. I have a list as long as your arm. Such a shame as would be great if it worked..Version: 4.0.3

Weekends seem slow for this appStruggling with lag on the weekends, as servers do not seem responsive to food inputting. Custom foods are very clunky in comparison to MyFittnessPal I used to use, because of our UK types of food which are not on the predominant USA or Canadian databases. In addition, minerals are missing when inputting mineral water. Most times it only registers three minerals when there are potentially ten in the list. This is important to me as I have underlying health conditions and need to know my micronutrients. Enjoying lots of features on this platform which has made it head and shoulders above the rest..Version: 4.9.2

Good app but lots of UI nonsenseTry to add a new food. Good luck. The automatic photo doesn’t work with transparent labels and then you have to enter nutrition facts manually. Mistakes were made by developers here as there’s confusion between serving size and the weight that nutrition facts refer to (like the typical 100g). As a result I had a 3200kcal counted for a tbsp of jam. You easily give up in creating new foods manually. Understanding where to add what is a bit cumbersome when you’re new. Overall a good app but with silly pitfalls..Version: 3.2.9

Awful compared to competitionNot only is this app awful compared to the competition (you can’t organise food in to Meals and hardly any barcodes are loaded already) but I got scammed out of paying for it. I paid for the ‘gold’ version only to find out after downloading it that it’s no longer a running app and that you have to subscribe to get the benefits. You’ve taken my money and given me nothing in return..Version: 3.12.1

Clunky on iPadOverly complicated. Difficult to find settings and change overview tiles, etc. For low carb it seems to only track total carbs or net carbs. Funny where these rules come from because tracking net carbs is not backed by science. The body can take energy from soluble fibre because it is fermented and produces SCFAs, which the body uses to create glucose so the actual carb load of fibre is about 1.5 kcals per gram. All apps fall foul of this fact..Version: 3.21.0

Let down by not having Meal breakdown as standard. The UI is a bit too cartoony for my liking. The setup is fiddly and the fact that you have to be a gold member to break your food down my meal is seriously BS. I wanted to try it as the extra detail in vitamin, mineral and amino acid profile is great but if I can’t break it down by meal it’s useless. I’d happily pay for the app if it was included but I’m not prepared to sign up for yet another subscription service. Back to MyFitnessPal. Sorry..Version: 2.3.1

Good but have some glitchesLove the app. It’s fascinating, quite life changing. Database is alright and the labellike layout makes it super easy to add things if your item is missing, literally it takes two seconds. I do have some little issues. Small but annoying. First one is the app is very slow to wake up and go the the current day if I fire up the up for the first time on a given day. What I mean is the app shows the last day for a good few seconds before switching to today so if you trying to add your breakfast is the rush you’ll end up adding your food to previous day. If you trying to add your dinner when it’s dark around - you can’t. The scanner freeze when I turn on the flashlight. Not the app, just the frame in the scanner. Once I turn the flashlight off the image is live again. So I need to use outsource light every evening. Again, very little thing but after a while it does get frustrating. It’s been going on for months now. I thought maybe an update will fix it but still there. Restarting/reinstalling app/updating software didn’t help. But the app still is great. And it’s free!.Version: 4.15.0

I’m not registering an account without even being able to try the app beforeLet me test the app before asking for any personal data. Edit in response to the developer’s answer: I understand you need metrics about body type. I’m talking about creating an account. I see no reason to register and give my email and whichever other data is required without even being able to see how the app works..Version: 3.7.5

Great app but seems outdated! The depth of the app is great in regards to micronutrients and the ability to add foods missing is great, but the exercise section is so weird! I found it really hard to find to similar exercises that matched what I’m doing? It’s quite specific on odd areas of exercise and completely misses newer exercises like barre or cardio classes..Version: 3.3.6

Half a Job HarrySure this app gives you great breakdowns and allows you track more or less everything you’d ever want, it links nicely with your fitness watch but it falls down with the food database. I don’t eat unusual or local produce often so I’d expect it to pick up on very common products I eat which it doesn’t. It recognises no more than 60% of shop bought products which means I spend my life adding custom foods. Add a food here and there is fine but As this stage I’d prefer the unverified databases over this because it just doesn’t have so much everyday food items in the database. Wish I hadn’t paid for the full app and stuck with my previous app which did it all and had a better database…but that’s marketing for you!.Version: 3.8.7

Good, but limited.I was a Gold subscriber, but after a few years of being gaslit by the developers in the community forum, I gave up and downgraded. The app has all of the basic features of a calorie/ macro tracker, and the micro nutrient breakdown is nice. However, it seems they focus on developing the features they think people should want not the features users have been asking for. Instead of just being honest and taking users a seven added about certain features, they life and say it’s on the roadmap (then years later admit it’s not being developed). Also, the photos are a life. There’s no option to calculate macros by a vegan diet. Update this respond: mainly meal planning. Back in 2019 there was confirmation it was on the roadmap. Folios were ignored until a few years later when it was confirmed to not be happening..Version: 4.14.2

Have to manually force sync to Apple Health…It does not sync automatically to Apple Health… you have to go to every day on the diary and swipe down to refresh the day, only then it will sync… have to do that for every single day….Version: 4.12.1

DisappointingI bought this because I had read that they had a new update in November where you could have set calories to cycle high / low calorie data but this feature doesn’t work. It is very confusing and hard to use. Daily calories are constantly changing and won’t stay fixed..Version: 3.18.2

Has potentialI was really hoping to make this my new default but it’s missing a few important features. First it does a better job than LoseIt for making it easy to add recently used foods and most common foods. Also you can add favorites which is great. It has a nice clean UI and really good fitness tracking integration. So far I’ve been pleased with the database as well. There are a few things I think it needs before I could fully switch though: 1. It doesn’t have any automatic conversion between measurement units. If something has serving size of “1 cup” I want to easily choose different measurement units (when possible), such as “5 tablespoons”. When a serving size is “five slices” I want to be able to choose “one slice”. Both of these should be very doable with strict data entry structure in place. 2. Doesn’t seem to provide a weekly overview. MyFitnessPal and LoseIt do a much better job of graphs and visually representing how things are going. 3. Smaller thing, but it displays different databases labeled CRDB and FDC but doesn’t explain what they mean. 4. Finally, when doing a search or barcode scan I wish it would highlight in some way which option I chose last time. Most of the time there have been 2-3 results for each barcode when I scan, and once I figure out the right one that matches my label I want that to be highlighted in some way for next time I scan..Version: 4.0.1

Great except for customer serviceThis is a great product and in my experience it is the only app to deliver reasonably accurate detailed data on individual nutrients. I use it in particular for monitoring potassium. The app has access to several accurate databases to give you the best possible figures. However when I enter data for a new food not on your database, I'm given the option for you to “email me”. Sadly out of many foods I have submitted, I have received just three email replies, and none since May of this year. Would you please stop suggesting you will contact the user or make sure you actually contact every use who painstakingly sends you the data? Your present lack of contact seems dishonest..Version: 3.13.1

Upgrade did not work & was charged moreI upgraded to the gold so that I can categorize into meals, but it won’t let me. It was also supposed to be $10.99 a month, and I was charged $39.17..Version: 4.6.4

The recommendations are terribleThe app told me to eat 1500 calories. Even though people my age (teenage girls) usually require 700 more. The app also told me I had 9.4% body fat. Even though that’s below the essential body fat marker (below 15-10% for women) and I would be very unhealthy (lose period, etc). Thirdly, the app told me to eat 95.7 grams of protein. I’m 113 pounds/51 kilograms. It’s recommended that I eat 0.75 grams per kilo of body weight ( 38.25 grams)..Version: 4.7.0

Can’t update weight / fat values anymoreHas bug that you can’t update body weight or body fat anymore (unlike the legacy version). Otherwise this app is 5 stars. It seamlessly migrated my data from the legacy and online versions. Has a surprisingly comprehensive database of foods, products, vitamin tablets. Over the years it has educated me on the nutrition different foods have and has really helped to form a great eating regime. Good graphs. I love this app..Version: 3.4.2

Needs workI do like that this app has so much nutritional info provided. BUT it looks messy and needs to look a bit more “clean”. I use my net diary pro as well to log exercise and foods. The charts on my net diary are easy to read, easier to log foods, more scanned items available, AND my calories are off by 350 between the two apps!! That’s a GREAT variance! And I put it the exact same foods on both- yes counting macros, net carbs and so forth. I feel more comfortable with net diary pro but my provider wants me to use this one. I would like to continue using Cronometer but please make it easier to use when selecting foods, more items read with barcode, the charts easier to understand or throw in pointers on using certain features, the orange color is too bold. Clicking from one thing to another or how to add food etc is lengthy. I appreciate the details of this app, but it needs A LOT of user friendly clean ups..Version: 2.3.1

Won’t let me sign upKeyboard won’t let me enter anything for email or password. Pls fix..Version: 4.11.2

Not bad but no worth paying for in AustraliaNot a bad app, I like the format. However I don’t get apps that require annual subscriptions, especially when I’ve been waiting for over a year for the Australian food data base isn’t up to scratch. Do that and this app would be worth paying for.Version: 2.3.5

NotesI want to be able to make notes within each custom meal. And you should add portion changing like MyFitnessPal you can change the serving size.Version: 4.10.0

Poor dataMost food diary apps don’t track (or sync to Health) micronutrients, so I checked this app out for this, and that part looks and works great! But, at least in the UK, the food data is really, really poor. Most foods don’t have human-friendly units, so you have to work out how many grams exactly is an egg, or a biscuit, or a slice of cheese. I often have to switch to other apps to do further research or calculations. And once you work it out, you can’t then add it as a new unit, so if you ate two eggs, time to do more sums in your head! It’s so much work that I think using this app daily would make me give up on keeping a diary altogether..Version: 4.16.1

Widget valuesI’ve read hundred on reviews that have asked for a widget that shows macros in grams not calories along with you’re calories consumed and you just flat out refuse todo it. Something so simple and honestly it’s stopping people from making the leap to premium. Good tracker but you say you read all these reviews and for years nothings changed. Widgets don’t work at all since update.Version: 4.16.1

Won’t let me sign upHi! I can’t input my email or password it won’t let me type, please fix.Version: 4.12.1

Was great, now almost impossible to useI had rated this as 5/5 before, but now a glitch in the app means that I can’t actually use it. Every time I open the app, it keeps telling me that my subscription is being updated and no matter how many times I click on, the pop up keeps popping up over and over making it impossible for me to input any food, exercise or other data on my mobile. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times and contacted the app help desk with no response. It would still be 5/5 if I could use the mobile app, but seeing as all I can currently use is the website, that takes away any convenience. I’m considering cancelling my paid subscription to see if the pop ups stop..Version: 3.15.1

Great appIt’s missing many “restaurant” meals and I wish it would allow me to delete entries from the “all” list. Can you add Canadian restaurants like Kelsey’s, Montana’s,.Joeys’s , Harvey’s, East Side Mario’s, Moxie’s.Version: 4.11.2

Good idea but very limitedThe main reason for trying out this app is the fact that I’m trying the high fat/ ketogenic diet and this is the only app out there which I’ve found that can track net cabs directly. I live in Asia (Singapore). First, the database is extremely limited at least for those of us living in Asia. I understand that in the case of a free product you’re asking me to contribute with food, but if I’m paying for it, that should be your job to have completed already. Takeaway #1: if you live in Asia, save your money Second, the app (in its free version) really has A LOT of adds compared to, say, MyFitnessPal. Incidentally, from a pure database perspective, the free version of MyFitnessPal is A LOT more comprehensive, while it doesn’t make the app look like a add-laden website on which I wouldn’t spend 10 seconds Takeaway #2: use only if you can tolerate adds everywhere (even when you enter food!) Overall, I’m very disappointed. If the objective was to build an app to really help those who want to transition to a better diet, the developer should strike to provide a balance between value offered and level of ads used until the database is robust. Once it is, charging a fee is totally reasonable for a VERY USEFUL app. I hope there will be positive changes in the future. Thanks.Version: 2.2.7

Brilliant tracker. Poor at Exporting dataThis app is a brilliant nutritional tracker. Found it extremely difficult to find a tracker that also included vitamins and minerals, so it’s brilliant on that front. If that’s all you want it for, the this app is 5*. If you want this app to export its data into apple health, then you’re in for a wild ride. The main issue I have with this app is sometimes it exports to apple health correctly and sometimes is doesn’t. I had day where I consumed just over 90g of protein. Looked in apple health and it said 5g. I then refreshed the day on cornometer and apple health updated. Not to the 90g I expected but to a new figure of 13g. I refreshed again. It changed again to 82g. Refreshed again, went back down to 5g. I’ve given up trying to get this app to export the correct data to apple health. I’d say the apple health data is accurate 60% of the time. Yes, I’ve tried deleting all data in apple health. Uninstalling the app, everything. Nothing works..Version: 4.16.1

Very good but tedious data entryI have spent the past week trying this app compared to 3 others at the same time. They all offer similar features for analytics but I preferred this one slightly because it’s organized in an easier to read way. However, a growing frustration is turning me off completely to moving forward and that is when it comes to entering my meals. What takes me 10 seconds in the other apps takes me a couple minutes in this app because they have recommendations based on historic entries for the time of day—this is a must where people get into routines frequently repeating ingredients/recipes or meals. Even something as simple as the protein shake I drink between many meals, I completely have to start a new search to find it even though I’ve selected it 10 times last week..Version: 4.8.1
