NFHS Rules for Negative User Reviews

No Rules BookI’m a PIAA Field Hockey official. I purchased the 2021 NFHS Field Hockey Rules Book online for the 2021 season so that I can read it and take notes on my tablet. Fast forward one year. The 2022 regular season has now started—some teams have already played 4 games—however, the 2022 version is still not ready for purchase. Don’t be fooled by the updated 2022 book listing on the app/website that appears to be available for purchase. I have been trying to purchase it for over one month. Each time I get a message box titled “Failed”, which states “[t]his content is currently being reviewed and will be available for purchase soon. Please try again tomorrow.” In 2022, I expect the NFHS to be able to distribute the current year’s rules book in electronic format BEFORE the season begins. Very disappointed. As a result, gave 1 star for review..Version: 3.6.3

UnusableI’m a registered official for multiple NFHS sports. I have been for many years. I simply don’t understand why I must pay for access to rule books within the app. I can go directly to the NFHS site on all my other devices,(PC, Laptop,iPad) and navigate with no issues or additional changes. I thought it would be convenient to put on my phone as well. As far as I’m concerned this app is a total fail. One star is over rating it. I don’t believe the developer is primary or directly tied to, or a part of NFHS. If so, why the additional charges, and shame on you for doing such. “F-“. I’m deleting after I post this..Version: 3.3.2

No book, support, way to contactMy books are gone. My new books aren’t here either. No support. No way to contact them because the contact feature doesn’t work. I failed my open book test because I couldn’t study or look things up (test gets super specific and horrendously worded). I guess that’s one less official on the field this spring. Pretty mad that they’ve known this is a problem and yet done nothing to fix it..Version: 3.6.3

Rule booksGreat rules but when trying to contact NFHS they are very very slow to respond back..Version: 3.6.3

Completely uselessI wish I had paid more attention to the reviews. Description says nothing about having to pay for a subscription. Only says subscription needed. Sure, one use common sense and guess that would involve money but it should still say that. Not being able to look up the rules of a sport from an app that is designed to is ridiculous. This app should be removed from the App Store.Version: 3.6.3

DisappointedThe App is limited and inconsistent in its uptime availability. Has not been working at all recently. Last season the Case Books were also available, but not this season. The Manuals for each sport are also not available. Poorly organized plan and deficient implantation to serve the officials who serve the NFHS students, athletes, coaches and their followers and friends.Version: 3.5.1

CrashesCrashes constantly and cannot get to some pages. Needed this for my exam, oh well. Until updated, this won’t be getting a better rating. The search bars are limited, you had better get exact wording. It does make searching the book easier, but adds different hurdles. Oh well, new world problems I guess..Version: 3.2.5

Absentee rule makerWe’re on the precipice of volleyball season and the ONLY way our crew of officials can get books is the print route. And that means paying approx. $14 in shipping for a $12 book. We’d use the app but the rulebook is unavailable there, kicking back an error saying the content is “currently being reviewed.” An organization positioned as the sole rule maker of so many sports has a duty to provide multiple forms of access to their rules. This experience is striking..Version: 3.6.3

Doesn’t work after first yearWhen you go to update to a new year, they take your money. But then you can’t view the new book. As other people have noted, there isn’t a spot to download/subscribe again. If this happens to you, be sure to file a complaint with Apple to get your money back!.Version: 3.6.3

Hurting the sport of Track And FieldThis organization is charged with supporting and promoting track and field, yet they make it difficult for coaches, athletes, parents, and spectators from learning the rules. This may not be as big of a deal in other sports, but track and field is a sport of rules and understanding them can make the difference between qualifying or not and success or failure. It’s sad that people who don’t have the money to buy the rules can’t get them somewhere for free. I would gladly accept a charge for an app that makes it more convenient if a pdf of the rules are available online. I just don’t know why NFHS thinks it’s a good idea to hide the rules behind a paywall. I guess those who have money to spare get to know and read the rules, and those that don’t are left to read rules for 2 years ago.... oh wait, you can’t even do that because the ebooks expire and disappear after a year..Version: 3.4.1

No Book, No SupportI am a licensed official in multiple sports, and a member of NFHS Officials. Had my books here last year. Nothing changed with my NFHS or State Association login, and now I have no books. Used the contact us section to report issue multiple times, still no books. Not even an email back to let me know they are aware. I have a paper copy of the books that comes with my license, but no access in the app. If the rule books are sent to publishing in a word processing/PDF document (as all publishers have done for two decades), what expense is truly incurred by giving access to officials, or anyone with a genuine interest in learning the rules? Aren’t the rules edited by a committee of members? Are there really any royalties or copyrights to be paid? Why then does the organization charge for the privilege of referencing their rules? It’s one thing to not support your app, but failing to support the officials, coaches, players and fans that want to know, coach, and play by the rules, goes against the mission statement of the organization. Perhaps that should be changed to, “To make money through fees, dues, and subscriptions while inspiring participants to make nothing, be ignorant, and all while being a good sport about it.” This makes me wonder where the $25,000 my state alone sends to the NFHS every year for officials’ memberships alone, is actually being spent..Version: 3.2.5

Great last year for the football, not this yearI have been unable to purchase this seasons football rules and case book. After a month of trying and no support from NFHS. I’m done trying, back to the old paper based books.Version: 3.6.3

No rule bookI bought the NFHS Baseball rule book in March of 2023 and went in to check on something in Oct 2023 and none of my books were on the app. I went to repurchase the book and the rule book library doesn’t even show up. The last update was done over 2 years ago. Poor performance!.Version: 3.6.3

No book available, no timeline, doesn’t answer emailBeen trying to download 2022 football books for weeks with no success. Email them for support multiple times with no response. I wish they would go back to Amazon/Apple for ebooks..Version: 3.6.3

Can’t download the bookI would give more stars if I could actually download/subscribe to the football rules book. It keeps saying there’s an error and to check back tomorrow. It’s said that for weeks now. I’m a coach and would love access to it. Can I download it another way from somewhere else??.Version: 3.6.3

Have to buy the rule bookBeen coaching for years and have always been supplied with a printed copy of the rules, except for this year. My school pays the membership fee and I have to pay for an e version of the book, what a joke. Always trying to make a buck somehow. It should be your duty to supply all coaches with a rule book if you want them to abide by the rules that YOU set in place. What a joke.Version: 3.2.5

EBook was 100% betterI don’t know why NFHS chose to remove the ebook from iTunes. The format was easier to use, there was a search option, and the images would load even when not connected to the internet. This is the worst transition I have ever experienced and paying $15 shipping for 1 book now that the digital platform is useless is annoying. Stick to sports rules and leave technology to the professionals..Version: 3.6.3

Absolute Money GrabIt’s absolutely ridiculous you have to pay to view a rule book. It would be one thing if it offered something more: explanations, examples, common misconceptions, course work for obtaining an officiating licenses, etc. I have tried searching online, but no. If you would like to know what the high school rules are, specially how they differ from rules at other levels, amateur or professional, you have to pay. Disgraceful..Version: 3.6.3

Waste of timeIt is no wonder that SO many coaches are so woefully unaware of rules and regulations in the sports they are charged with teaching young folks. You have to pay EVERY YEAR just to see the rule book! If “player safety” was truly the goal, there would be a free searchable database for all rules so that each coach could fully understand the regulations governing their respective sports..Version: 3.6.3

Subscription won’t loadI have tried multiple times to load the book I paid for and it will not download. I have verified my account has been charged but still do not have access to the book. There is no customer support to call to resolve the issue..Version: 3.1.0

IncompleteThis is an abbreviated version of the rule book and therefore is lacking critical information. Why would NFHS provide a portion of the rule book and not the rules in their entirety? Reading half the rules creates confusion and inconsistencies amongst officials. NFHS stop hiding the rules like it’s some kind of national secret. Provide the entire rules book or don’t bother. You are doing more harm then good..Version: 3.6.3

Not worth the headacheI just downloaded this app so I can go do my FH test. Tried to purchase the rules book and was prompted to turn on in app purchases. The app doesn’t even show up in settings for me to enable in app purchase. So much for doing my test. It’s a baby app so maybe in the next few months the app may reach toddler state...only if the funds and development effort is there. Please make some improvements with this app. It’s not good..Version: 3.5.8

Dev issuesFirst, setting up an account shows a data input screen with multiple fields. The nfoetinateky the background and font color are so similar a normal person cannot see the field labels for data entry. Second, upon configuring and click on Add Books the user is greeted with a blank white screen. Very odd this was put in prod this way..Version: 3.6.3

Useless! (And 1 year later, still useless!)The new soccer season has already started; I’m a referee with my first games in 5 days. I’ve got a free Saturday, a nice day to re-read the rules and get everything ready for the new season, right? Nope; check out this message from the app: “FAILURE This content is currently being reviewed and will be available soon. Please try again tomorrow.” Useless! Based on the other reviews I’ve read, I’m not holding my breath. UPDATE: it’s one year later (Aug ‘23) and still the same issue; a complete waste of time..Version: 3.6.3

Quizzes Don’t Show QuestionsThis update is a mess. The quizzes do not show the questions, only the answers. I sent a note about the issue well over a week ago and no reply/acknowledgement. I didn’t expect an immediate reply, but this is inexcusable. A simple note to say “ we are aware of the issue and are working on a fix” would have been nice..Version: 3.5.1

No ResponseI’ve been a “subscriber” for a few years in multiple sports. Everything worked fairly well except for occasional crashes. Currently, I’m waiting for a response because I’m unable to renew my subscription for the 20-21 Basketball season. At this point, I’m not hopeful that this will be resolved. Clearly, NFHS is in the business of making money and not solving problems. They will continue to get money from me through testing and state registration fees..Version: 3.6.2

You have nerve!!I coached HS sports for over 20 years and I know schools pay a fee for rule books and such and I get there is a cost involved in printing materials. What I have a problem with is not allowing a digital version for free to the average person. That is atrocious and greedy by the NFHS. Why wouldn’t you want people to know the rules. Don’t you understand it would alleviate arguments and other altercations with officials if people knew the rules? Charging private individuals for a digital version of the rules is a money grab and that is all it is..Version: 3.6.3

Unable to access downloaded/purchased rule/case booksI purchased the soccer rule book in 2018. I didn’t realize it would only last one year (subscription) and then I wouldn’t be able to access it... oh well, I don’t like that I can’t look at the ‘old’ rule book, but I can see the need to continue generating revenue but that isn’t my main problem. When I access the app currently it shows that I have the 20-21 soccer rule book in my library (even though I didn’t re-up my subscription) so I thought maybe they stopped the subscribing model and just made it a ‘one time purchase’ and my previous purchase had given me access! Sweet, right! NOPE. I can’t actually open either the rule or case book. Also, I go to ‘buy’ the books again to have access, but I can’t because it thinks I already have them... Thus, in the end, I don’t have much good to say about this app. It worked well for the first month and handful of times I used it in 2018, but been a brick since... I see they are continuing to update the app, but they are missing some major bug fixes.Version: 3.6.1

NFHS no love for helping people learn without paying. It’s bad enough we have to pay every year for a new rule book and pay 10 dollar shipping for a book that weighs 5 ounces. Now you want me to pay again just to review the rules when I don’t have my book? You really should be embarrassed for how greedy you have become. Shame on you from aiding in helping coaches, players, and umpires when it comes to the rules of the game!.Version: 3.3.1

Books Not AvailableI tried purchasing the newest edition of both the football rules and case books when my subscription expired, but I received a message stating they are under review and will be available at a later time. I contacted NFHS, and I have not received a response..Version: 3.6.3

Yes, but why?As with other leagues I ref with, I have purchased the print edition. For each I’ve also downloaded the app to have handy. First, the print edition, with shipping was inexcusably expensive. Second, this app contains NO information, but instead asks me to pay an annual subscription fee in order to see the same info I’ve already purchased in print. Fail..Version: 3.6.3

Books randomly disappearThis app used to work great, but something has happened in the last year to change that. My books randomly disappear and NFHS wants to charge me $6.95 to replace them on the app. I do log in with my state association email as directed, but that doesn’t fix anything. The fact I give it two stars instead of one is because it is a great app when it works properly..Version: 3.2.5

Nice when it works / terrible when it does notOver 1/2 way through 2022 FB season & rule book / case study still not available. No timeline on when it might be ready. The least that could be down is to extend prior year subscriptions for those that paid previous year if the app is not ready & the current year is not available. Poor communication, poor execution, and ultimately hinders ability of referees to study the rules / interpretations. Great when it works but a total lack of customer focus when the app does not..Version: 3.6.3

Charge for rule booksNowhere do they tell you they will charge to access rule books until after you register for an account. Charging to access an official rule book through an app for convenience over accessing it for free on a website is shady..Version: 3.6.3

Horrible app supportGood to see nothing changes, read the review a year and and I have the same issues. If you don’t intend to respond to your subscribers remove the option to email for help. I have sent several emails via the app and not one response. Rather annoying that you can’t even acknowledge the emails knowing it’s a feature on the app...Version: 3.5.5

Broken app for electronic distribution of rulebooks. As a new official, it is very disheartening to not be given support with respect to digital access to the rules. NHFS has routed all rulebook access through this application. Judging by my experience and those of the other reviewers, this app does not work as intended nor does it seem to be a priority for development. What are my officiating fees paying for?.Version: 3.6.3

No soccer rule book available during soccer season!?I'm a high school soccer referee and need to have a copy of the nfhs soccer rule book to refresh and check the rules throughout the season. On the nfhs website it states that the only way to see the book is thru this app! Yet it's not even available on the app yet!! I purchased last year's book on my previous phone with no problem. But I can't even see the one I purchased in my account. So now I have no way to check the high school soccer rules as a referee. It should never be this difficult!! There has to be a better way..Version: 3.6.3

Just a money grabI already have a small issue with paying for a rules book on top of our dues fees, but I do have huge issues with it then being taken away after a year or less. All other rules book for organizations I referee (collegiate and USSF) provide you a PDF version you can keep along with a printed version. Free for college rules book. It’s just another example of NFHS not actually caring for their refs that they know the rules, and are only interested in lining someone’s pocket at our expense. Should be ashamed. Poor poor poor..Version: 3.6.3

Rule Books Volleyball!!!!I have tried on several times in several occasions different days different times just to try to get the volleyball rulebook for 2022 and keeps giving that error a message please try again tomorrow. Date to submit the test will be done and over with before they get this fixed I’m very displeased with national Federation of high school sports!.Version: 3.6.3

Must pay for each rule bookYou have to pay for each rule book that you want to download. It doesn’t make sense to have to pay for a book when you are given a free book each season as a head coach. It would be nice to have this on your phone but not something that I feel a need to pay 5.99 to rarely use..Version: 3.5.3

Crashes ConstantlyI expected more functionality for six dollars per booklet. I hate that I am unable to hide or discard the dozen other sports for which I have no need or interest; the user is FORCED to scroll through until the one sport of interest is visible. WORSE IS THAT THE APPLICATION IS SO UNSTABLE. Almost as bad: though I paid six dollars for each book, I am NOT ALLOWED TO DOWNLOAD THEM so I can't read them with iBooks or a PDF reader. I do love the quiz feature..Version: 3.0.0

My Nfhs rule book disappeared!I have had the app for a couple of years. Every year I purchased the rulebook and the case manual. This year I purchased the rulebook as soon as the online version was available. When my app renewed a month or so ago, my rulebook disappeared. Now it wants to charge me again to download it again. I have emailed twice to NFHS but with no response yet. I’m still waiting. I use that rulebook all the time as assigner and as a state Supervisor..Version: 3.6.3

Books were great, when they were thereI used this app for a few years and have paid for the digital version of the books for over 10 years on various platforms. In the last year, my books show up but I cannot open them and now they show up as if they need to be downloaded. When I click to download, nothing happens. Support is a joke. When you fill out the “contact us” form within the app it tells you they will get back to you between 8-4pm on business days but no one ever gets back to you. I have filled out the form multiple times, never gotten a response and the problem persists (even with a new phone). I won't even get into the philosophical discussion of whether we should have to pay for the digital version once we have purchased the print edition - but as a 25-year official buying rule books every year (twice) gets old and frustrating when I am just throwing away the money for the digital version..Version: 3.6.3
