Justin Guitar Lessons & Songs for Negative User Reviews

Not working. My progress disappearedJustin Guitar is the best guitar instruction out there. This rating is for the app, not for the instruction. I signed up and paid for a one year subscription, and have been using this daily for the last few days. I was up through module four. I'm running this on my iPad. Today, I clicked on "my account", and it told me I am not registered on this device. It tried to get me to sign up for a new subscription and a one week trial. Everything I did before this was gone. Somehow, and I don't know how I found this, but I managed to find something that said "restore purchase", and I did, so I can login again and it recognizes that I did subscribe. But all of my history, all of my progress, everything I did, has been wiped out, completely gone. So now if I want to keep track, I have to start over. And probably keep track of outside of the app as to where I left off because the app is too buggy as to be reliable. Luckily I am only on day five of the free, and so I have canceled the subscription. I would love to look at it again when it's working. In the meantime, I will continue with the website. That is at least reliable..Version: 3.4.4

Don’t Subscribe!I subscribed for this app based on the very good Stage 1. After subscribing, the app content falls off a cliff. In Stage 2 you need to do 24 sets of chord changes exercises, and the app will NOT let you move past stage 2 until it’s done. I’ve used other practice tools for days because I don’t want to waste time doing pointless and boring exercises like changing from E to Em (literally just minutes lifting and putting down a single finger), but the app will not let me move on until this boring, demotivating, drudgery is done. If it let me do a couple of these exercises every day as part of my practice, that would be fine. To the developer, why would you include this in a gate preventing access to content students won’t find mindlessly boring. Love Justin’s free web content, and it doesn’t enforce any drudgery on you. Save your money until they work out how to structure the content better. Better versions are free on the web..Version: 2.2.5

Update ruined this appNovember 18 Further update has taken away more features. All strumming and picking patterns removed from songs. App is now basically an expensive link to Justin’s free web material. July 18. Update has remove ability to change the tempo of songs to suit using a slider, now limited to just 3 speeds. Strumming patterns removed from within songs along with the ability to practise at varying speeds. How do you know what the strumming pattern is for the song before playing? I bought this app a month ago because of the song features that they are have now removed. Have 11 months left of subscription to something that now doesn’t do what I bought it for.... A gerund would be nice, the old version back would be even better.Version: 2.2.5

UmmmWhoever needs this guy explaining the simplest things to them is as lazy as humanly possible, how about instead of an app you take a few minutes and read up on your new interest in guitar, save the rest of us the time. This is such a waste of my time, I come in experienced and for the most part just wanted to see what the hype is and had hopes perhaps I could learn a thing or two especially after hearing his array of song tutorials.. but all the songs are is a backing track of the band chords and lyrics, absolutely no frills, if this is what’s considered learning a song then why pay for an app when you can just play along to any song and learn it that way...Version: 3.9.0

Not so greatIt’s not so great believe me I haven’t learned anything here you need to get a teacher to help you you cannot learn anything from an app. My best friend told me he learned to play from taking classes in person and my friend can play all Nirvana songs and anything else. These apps are a waste of time you won’t advance with these. I did try this one as a last resort to online teaching and it failed me so I got refunded back after one week of this crap app. Plus they don’t have a tab sheets or anything so you can play the songs they offer. It’s not a good way to learn guitar that’s all I’m going say. I’ve tried every guitar learning app on here and it’s all a fail..Version: 3.7.0

Terrible updateThis app used to be awesome, since the v3 it’s awful. It’s so hard to follow along to the songs now, so much so that I’ve given up and I was making such good progress. The backing track is too dominant/loud making it really hard to feel and hear where you are in the song. The strumming info is too small on an iPad screen, doesn’t match the tempo of the song and it’s really difficult to read compared to the old version. Bars that represent strums are barely different colours, really poor UX and I’ve now got to read either D or U instead of arrows. The only improvement is the song search but even that is hampered by the slow performance of the app, taping on the screen there’s a noticeable lag between anything happening and I have a fairly new iPad Air. Please bring back the old version until these issues have been reworked and fix, I’ve just paid for a years subscription and it’s wasted on this new app. As it stands I cannot recommend this app to anyone, Justin’s content is great but it’s useless presented like this..Version: 3.1.2

UnusableCrashing so often on the latest version it’s unusable, ios 12.5.5 on an ageing ipad air that still runs other apps without problems. Love justin’s content but didn’t like the new release, definitely a backwards step compared with the previous version, it's harder to navigate and find content, it’s frustratingly slow entering values into the one minute changes tool using the scroll bar, it’s tedious having to swipe the full width of the screen several times to get to the value required. Numerical input would be so much easier and allow the user to get on with playing guitar instead of operating the app. I also found the design of the latest song environment to be poor, there’s just too much going on! Preferred the previous version which was a joy to play along with..Version: 3.1.9

Bad OverhallLove Justin’s teachings but the kids just don’t like the new updated app. It crashes and It’s desperately slow to react to commands on my 6yr old iPad Air. More fundamentally though, the kids just find the user experience on the totally overhauled version to be not as simple and intuitive as the old app, and I tend to agree. The lessons are good with the expanded material but when playing songs the experience is just not as good and the kids get lost in confusion. They keep asking for the old app. Always a bad idea to totally redesign an app that customers love using!.Version: 3.1.3

Please fix this because it makes the app terrible in my opinion. This is absolutely terrible and please don’t make this out to be mean or rude because I am not trying to be rude I downloaded the app because of an ad that popped up and I signed up and everything I saw the first 2 or 3 videos and then the tuning thingy part came up but when I tried to tune my guitar it was saying that I was tuning a different chord and I was tuning the right chord whenever I was tuning the 6th chord it was saying that i was tuning the 5th chord so I deleted it but then a few days later I downloaded it again to see if it would work this time and when the tuning part was coming up again at first everything was going good and when I was finished tuning the guitar it said “you are in tune” and it wanted me to make sure that it was right so it made me touch the chords again to see if it was right and it was saying that it was wrong and that it was the wrong chord and it wasn’t the wrong chord it was the right chord I even double checked tosee, I was touching the 1st chord but it was saying that I was touching the second chord and this is a big issue for me this app is good and all but that part needs to be fixed because it said that it was in tune and it made me double check but apparently the adjustments were wrong. I would appreciate it if you were to fix this thank you..Version: 3.9.1

TabsBeen a long time supported of Justin’s products, books cds back a long time ago, just signed up for the tabs and payed a year, every song I wanted to follow up on that I have learnt or wanted to learn from the videos is either different, something I could Google or has only chords or just the lyrics? The app should of been 100% before people have to pay. So now it’s back to Google for free. Justin, walk befor you run my Aussie friend..Version: 2.3.11

Unable to cancel subscriptionI attempted to cancel my subscription last month, and had every reason to believe I had done so successfully as I arrived at a page which stated “your plan will be cancel on [date]” I was surprised to see another charge to my account last week. Giving the benefit of the doubt, I attempted to cancel my subscription through the Musopia link and again arrived at a page saying my subscription would be cancelled. However, upon returning to the app the exact opposite is still shown, that my subscription would be renewed next month instead. How on earth am I supposed to cancel my subscription, if not by following the exact steps provided by the platform? Please refund last month’s charge and cancel my subscription. I will be disputing any further charges with my credit card company. What a shame for Justin that his service provides such a predatory subscription portal..Version: 3.8.2

No AirPlay is a bit of a bummerLove the lessons. Excellent teacher (and a fellow Aussie!). It is a little confusing between different platforms. If I follow along on my laptop through the website, it’s not in sync with the app. I paid for a tab subscription, and the app, but the one thing that bugs me is having to watch the app videos on my phone screen. Would love to be able to airplay them to my tv for easier viewing. Thanks so much.Version: 3.1.13

Mostly a website aggregator with guitar hero functionalityThis app is mainly an aggregator of the videos on Justin’s website. Yes, it follows a progression like the site, but the site has a lot more content. The big disconnect between the app and the site is around song playing. The app has a play along feature that is reminiscent of guitar hero. If you want to learn how to play the song, you’ll need to go to the website and watch the video. The site lacks the guitar hero type functionality so in this regard, the app and site compliment each other. The app would be much better if it included the song tutorial videos. Other things that the app leaves out: too much to list. Go to Justin’s website to see all that’s missing. Finally, I am annoyed that I can’t switch between my iPhone and iPad and have everything synced. If I do lessons on one device, I have to manually tag them as completed on the other device..Version: 2.3.6

New version keeps crashingOriginally signed up and was enjoying the old version... stopped playing for a while. Now just started using the new version and keeps crashing..Version: 3.1.13

Worst experienceI think Justin is probably a great instructor but the app is a joke. I had to re create my a account several times. After finally getting logged in. I find one has to go to a web site for additional instruction. What a hassle! Ok…. Go to web site. Guess what. I’m not found. Sorry. I’m out..Version: 3.4.1

Sorta love it.I love that the songs actually sound like the song. Not a bad midi cover. I don’t like how it doesn’t sync with the website. I don’t love the way it logs me out randomly and I have to log back in. I don’t like the way you can’t filter by anything but major chords. Know how to play C but not C#? Tough. I don’t like the way there are songs that use chords I haven’t learned yet that in the chord diagram just say “no video yet” and doesn’t even show chord chart for fingers. A new problem, the practice option for one minute changes says it needs access to the microphone and prompts me to click to go to settings. When I do, there is nothing about microphone on that screen. When I go to the actual microphone privacy settings, the Justin guitar app is not listed there. Rather frustrating. Had to uninstall and reinstall the app and then it finally prompted me for microphone access. But now it has a dot on my home screen like there’s a new message or something for me, but when opening the app there’s nothing new there. No new messages, no new apps, no new songs..Version: 3.8.2
