Financial Times: Business News for Negative User Reviews

New insightsThere is a need to replace long established writers with fresh thinking journalists. Too many have become smug, arrogant in their observations and certainly biased. Readers don’t care if you been at the FT for decades… we care about making sense of rigs increasingly complex world. Your historical coverage of Tesla is indicative of the challenges you face… biased, dismissive, old world and certainly not accepting that your analysis was wrong.Version: 1.46

Poor navigation from home pageThe content is great but this is such a hard app to navigate on an iPhone. The home page has too many photographs which limit the number of links to stories and they tend to link to features and big reads not to news. There are some parts of the home page where you have to scroll across from left to right to see all the links which is painful. It’s good it can be read off line but I tend to look at the desktop version which is much easier to navigate..Version: 1.31

FT APPI absolutely love reading the FT It’s my favourite newspaper But reading it online is not the easiest nor most readable on the App It’s hard to negotiate the things I like - whereas in the actual paper version I read every single page. As I cannot get the paper version in my region- I am less than satisfied Suggestions welcome.Version: 1.41

Error when clicking on imagesOn the iPad and iPhone app, when you click on an image in the article the app reverts back to the home page. This is very annoying if you are trying to read articles in sequence. Please fix.Version: 1.32

Design of the app have lots of areas that need improvementThe design of the app is one of the worst among the news papers. one of the worst part is why on earth you have all your news story at the small bottom of the screen scrollers? You have a huge page with just two story headings. It's mind boggling why i have to keep scrolling through the list of stories at the bottom of the page. There are other issues that makes me feel that the iPad app is worse than the iPhone app, not that the iPhone app is anything exceptional. But of all other news app. It's usually the phone app that is not as good an experience. FT manage to do the reverse..Version: 1.29

Stupid App that doesn’t let me SSO-sign inSSO Login not available???.Version: 1.51

Excellent journalism, poor app experienceIt’s a shame, I enjoy reading FT news for the quality of their articles but the app is a let down. I would say it does the bare minimum of letting me see recent news and read an article, but fails to engage me further. Unfortunately its quality of experience is far from matching the standard that I’d expect for a £50/month subscription. Besides randomly crashing, basic things like refreshing the articles aren’t done right - why is it a tab on your menu? All socials and news app use pull to refresh feature. These decisions add clutter to the experience and make it less convenient and enjoyable to use. The top stories page is cluttered and it’s hard to spot articles based what you’re interested in. The app also doesn’t seem to learn as I use it to recommend me personalised content. Finally there is no way to sign up on the app too, making me wonder why I shouldn’t stick to the web experience instead. Working in tech myself, I may be more irritated by these than other users but all in all, I think poor product decisions were made here. There’s a long way to go for this app to offer a comprehensive and premium experience. Basically get your priorities straight!.Version: 1.52

Where did “Today’s Paper” go?Since the app was updated a few months ago, old news and new news are all combined. It was much better before, when one could just see the day’s news under the “Today’s Paper” option (or whatever it was called). Now, one is forced to waste time scrolling through news from earlier days that one has already seen before..Version: 1.32

Limiting My access to most of the content.Unless your limiting my access to to most of the articles stops i will terminate my subscription. Having 2 levels of access is Ok , where you limit some special articles , but when you further have randomly limited my access to many ,is not acceptable. Your increasing left bias is not appreciated either. Just report the news in an unbiased way, do analysis, of facts , presenting opinions, and calling that news is not what this paper stood for over the years I have been a subscriber. Long time subscriber..Version: 1.32

Rather glitchy for such a major media outletThe commenting functionality on the app is utterly atrocious. Practically every useful feature present on the website version is absent on the app. Way too many to list here. The comments sections won’t load when on 4G. Sometimes even issue updates won’t load on 4G. The gift article functionality is not functional. The FT customer service “do not have a definite time regarding its fix”. A great opportunity to widen the readership and free targeted promotion is missed..Version: 1.24

OK, but the search function is poorThe FT is well known. The app is OK, but it can be hard to find stuff, also a lot of the content is repeated when you scroll to different headings “world”, “companies”, “markets”. The opinion writers are obsessed with Brexit. It’s a financial newspaper, they ought to spend more time on financial topics and less on politics. But it’s easier to write about politics than do the hard work reading and analysing what companies, fund managers and central banks are saying..Version: 1.53

No longer a trusted source for balanced newsOnce considered the most trusted source of unbiased news, The Financial Times has reverted to adopting the line of western warmongers and neoconservative sentiment. It is not the independent source of information to which we relied on. Very disturbing when it is not more accurate than the Daily Mirror or New York Post. But my subscription is automatically renewed without asking if I want to pay for tabloid news..Version: 1.51

Does not let you create a loginThis is the first time I’ve seen an app that does not seamlessly work with OAuth logins either Apple or Google’s. Apparently I need to have had to create it elsewhere (I assume a desktop). Does not give the option to create an account. Only has Google or Apple logins (but won’t work if you’ve never created one before) and the standard username /password fields. It also has a forgot password option. But no create user account option. Most apps try to make you stay and do everything on the app. I actually feel like deleting it after not being able to create a user account after less than 3-4 minutes of use..Version: 1.34

No Longer Auto UpdateLatest version no longer auto update. Excellent customer services..Version: 1.28

Login issues still presentThe app has improved over the last few years, but now another issue has cropped up. Every time I read an article and click on a link to another FT article from within it, I get taken to a mobile login screen. If I do log in this way, it apparently registers as a new device. And if I do this often enough, I get a harassing email from FT Licensing accusing me of being in breach of the user agreement. This has already happened three times this year, and as a result, I have had to go back to read any links via a web browser..Version: 1.32

Unable to sign inI am unable to sign in with my Google account despite deleting and installing it again. Please fix it. Thanks..Version: 1.22

Ads worse than on websiteThe app is hijacked by video ads. At first, I thought it was a virus, but no just an awful reader experience in the name of additional revenue..Version: 1.40

New FormatDon’t like it. Much preferred the previous layout / format. I think I will cancel my subscription..Version: 1.28

Basically good, with two exceptions. What is essentially a very good app, for a very good newspaper, is let down on two fronts; 1. The search function doesn’t really work, and looks like it’s somehow survived the modernisation of the rest of the app, reminiscent of iOS versions of the early ‘10s. 2. There is no workable night mode, and it’s not integrated with the OS. I like to read the news first thing, and I can’t do that without blinding myself and waking up my wife!.Version: 1.34

Poor UI navigationWhen reading articles and when you scroll down, it always accidentally swipe horizontally to another articles, very hard to use when reading..Version: 1.24

Amazing content but a very disappointing appI love the quality of journalism within the FT. However, the app just isn’t up to scratch. Headlines disappear, it’s very tricky to work out how to share content via LinkedIn and the myFT part is rubbish compared with how it used to be. The whole design of the app is awkward, counterintuitive and cumbersome compared with that of some of its well-known US rivals. Please radically overhaul this app and make it fit for purpose - if you’re paying a lot each month to subscribe, you expect much better!.Version: 1.21

No way to cancel subscriptionThere is no way to cancel your subscription on their app or website. In the age of software era, it is just poor ethics to not provide this functionality, making it harder for users to unsubcribe, hoping that they will delay or forget. I had to contact chat support on their website to cancel my subscription. I usually don’t write negative reviews on apps but I was really annoyed by this unethical attitude..Version: 1.23

FT OnlineSince moving abroad I have bitten the bullet and dropped my subscription for the written edition. What a relief! Like any quality broadsheet the physical FT was cumbersome and difficult to read to its full potential. The FT app is pretty intuitive to use and deftly takes advantage of its digital format by inserting cross references to related articles. It has a reasonably detailed contents sidebar and can also be customized. I read the FT mainly on iPhone but occasionally on my laptop, particularly when using the search function. The archive is extremely well stocked, it is easy to access, and the allowance of 20 gift articles per month is adequate given that each gift link can be accessed three times. Retrieved articles can also be printed. When I return to the UK I will stay online only with the occasional exception of the Weekend FT, which does benefit more from a hard copy format and which my wife enjoys browsing. All in all the best news app I use by a good margin. But there is a ‘but’. The FT is arguably the best newspaper in the world BUT is is horrendously expensive and therefore out of reach to many who would benefit from all it offers the privileged few..Version: 1.24

FT - Excellent content let down by poor appThe content of the FT is among the best newspapers in the world. Factual news reporting is clearly separated from editorial/opinions, and all are of high quality. The app is sadly not yet up to the same standard and appears to have had little investment in the last few years. Storing a series of links to specific articles from FT emails for later reading works well for a random time; after that (from minutes to a few hours) the list disappears..Version: 1.42

App stopped workingI have had an FT subscription for a long time, but recently the iPad version of the app puts me into a paywall for all articles, despite the fact I have a valid subscription (it works on the FT iPhone app). Seems like a recent iPad update may have caused the issue. Spoke with FT customer support, but no progress. Even deleting and reinstalling the app does not help..Version: 1.35

App not usableFull screen video ads on every article. Absolutely disrespectful to subscribers..Version: 1.52

Degrading qualityThis app has been degrading over the last months to the point when it’s easier to use the website. First, whenever I open it it always loading something for a few seconds and then says it can’t load. Then I tap try again and it loads it momentarily. Why can’t it show me the feed from last update? Why does it always have to wait? Then it asks me if I want to add topics. I already have topics, I use them, I know about them, stop bugging me with this feature. It’s so annoying that it’s easier to use the website..Version: 1.41

WillOverall the app is quite good, but there are some shortcomings. It is slow to start and, if you go to another window for more than a few seconds, it often resets itself. That is quite annoying..Version: 1.22

Cannot cancel subscriptionThe burgers charged me $69 after the first cheap trial month even though I did cancel the subscription. But the app does not have any settings for managing subscription. No way to cancel it. Never mind the subscription blunder, this is definitely a third tier provincial newspaper with just a couple of decent journalists. One tenth of scope and breadth of the Wall Street Journal..Version: 1.49

Not what it used to beThe day to day content has become repetitive in some areas of reporting for lack of new content.Version: 1.29

Making it harder and harder to see contentStill one of the best, unbiased news outlets in the world but increasingly difficult to see content as flashy app developers dominate the needs of readers - newest version has massive photos and text so two headlines take the space that 8 headlines used to take. Arg..Version: 1.24

AwfulWeb version is much better than this. 1. You often times lose where you at when browsing myft feed because it just brings you back to the top after reading one of the articles. 2. It doesn’t save your comment preferences 3. It’s slow and clunky to use. 4. Does not have the view per followed topic as the web version instead showing into timeline. 5. It says there are experimental options to ply around. I have these enabled and they don’t work, cannot customize home page, cannot disable off line use even though it is enabled. 6. The comment notification by email does not open in the app, gets stuck. 7. No easier way to go to your profile and view your comments but entering into a random article and go to your profile there. Do we reserve this app for our subscription? Many websites that are free offer a better functionality than this..Version: 1.29

The ecstasy and the agonyThis is wildly expensive compared with other broadsheets. When it's working properly it's a thing of beauty, with wonderful cross-referencing. But I have wasted many hours trying and failing to to navigate the subscription process, and ultimately it has defeated me. You get right to the end, your payment having apparently been accepted, only to land on a page reporting that the payment process is down. This is unacceptable. The business model really doesn't suit me either. I want to read people like Peter Foster, but their articles are invariably premium only - the complete opposite of what I want. Time for a serious rethink and a new, cheaper, fairer, subscription offering which can be completed inside the far more convenient Apple purchasing system. David Cooke.Version: 1.47

Great content unstable appBest newspaper around although the app often freezes. The stock screener used to be amazing but now it returns duplicate results making it unusable..Version: 1.24

Did the app get the corona virus?App won’t load articles and constantly crashes. Also it says beta on it. I never opted for beta apps. Given the subscription price the app needs to work..Version: 1.28

Sharing works really, really poorlyGreat App in all but the sharing, which works horribly. If you read a good article, you probably want to share with friends or colleagues. Sharing really doesn’t work at all on most messaging apps..Version: 1.48

Not what it used to beI have been reading the FT daily since 1987 when I started as a trainee at Deloitte, moving to become an equity analyst at Merrill Lynch and ultimately CEO of a market leader in renewable energy. I have definitely noticed a substantial deterioration in the quality of the writing and especially a shift from objective reporting to increasingly far fetched opinion pieces. This detracts from the value. FT readers are smart enough to form their own opinions and don’t need to be force fed by journalists that have lost their balance. Like many readers I am debating daily the need to cut my subscription, constrained only by my lack of viable alternatives. Please revert to the core values otherwise you are no better than the other broadsheets that have have also been consumed with politics..Version: 1.21

App has become really unreliableI have been an FT app user for years. The reliability of the App has got worse and worse. I now have to regularly quit/restart the app to get it to load/display properly. It frequently reports being updated when clearly its showing yesterday’s news. Support process isn’t great either. Despite reporting issues directly from the App, support still require basic environment information before they’ll even look at your request. Surely this can be sent automatically as the App knows this info..Version: 1.24

FT reviewAs many commenters have said, why are some articles comments not enabled! Secondly I like again as many read the FT for factual in depth articles, over time I.e. 20 years this appears to be less so. Finally the move of articles to Prime is also irritating. However sadly the FT is still the best of the bunch. I did not write above but it appeared as I went to add a comment as requested by ft. Couldn’t agree more. Lack of technical details irritating. I worked in oil exploration and articles on the petroleum industry often poor. Last sentence is so true. I read the guardian most days as it’s free and apart from left wing bias often good. Ditto independent for its free articles. On Saturday I read the daily Mail because I buy the paper version of ft and don’t want to spoil my later pleasure. If it isn’t damming with faint praise the ft is better..Version: 1.49

Scroll barNeeds one in-app to depict where in the article one is. Love the pink otherwise!.Version: 1.23

Decent app with serious bugThe articles etc load fine, but the security analysis section does not work. You cannot progress any further than the ‘Summary’ page, and there is a button ‘...’ in the top right which is a dead link Update Nov 19: the above seems to have been fixed, thank you. Now there is a bigger issue where despite the app saying “ready for offline” it still needs internet to even load the app... kind of defeats the purpose! Please can you fix so that the Nikon laced front page doesn’t need to connect to the internet (why would it?) before loading the app which has already downloaded the articles..Version: 1.24

Lots of work to do hereThis is a really weak app in my opinion. Lots of little things wrong with it that combine to make a poor overall experience. For example, All stories should be clearly dated so that people can see what is new content and what is old. The silly pictures at the top of the site - total waste of space. Take a look at the London Times app - much better. I recently resubscribing to FT but am already put off by the weaknesses of the app..Version: 1.39

App doesn’t update. Videos don’t play.Videos don’t play on iPhone..Version: 1.21

App breaks repeatedly on iOS 15With an iphone SE currently running iOS 15 the app loses the ability to load articles after a few minutes use. Reader is left looking at an empty screen (title only) and a spinning circle “loading“ icon. Judging from other comments this serious bug seems to have been lurking for a while. Unclear what action gets it into this state - one other user suggests it is attempting to read premium content. Perhaps the authentication process craps out. Alas, this makes the app unusable..Version: 1.43

Pale imitationThe FT is still a good paper but has taken a decisive turn for the worse, particularly in its app and online manifestation. News has given way to an explosion of ‘opinion’ pieces, and there aren’t enough experts to go round, so not all of these are very good. Many articles on the site are stale, and crop up in many different sections, giving the impression that there is more content than there actually is. There are just fewer interesting, current, articles that one wants to read. The hard copy version is a much better experience, particularly the Weekend FT..Version: 1.41

Beware of the bait and switchI am a huge fan of FT. Read them while and college and was happy to finally have the time and money to read it again. I went for the $99/year subscription. None of the articles that are suggested for me or interest me are part of that subscription. This plan is used a bait to get you to move up to the more expensive plan to actually read any worthwhile articles..Version: 1.35

Broken layoutThe scrolling and nav are often misalign in latest update..Version: 1.41

Not good at first, became worse laterOne saltar might be high - One of my frustrations with this app was always that it was never possible to get access to all the articles you would find in the FT website (or, at least it was not clear how). I never had a problem with this second-rate app until some weeks ago when it never updates. I don’t even now why they keep it operational.Version: 1.22

Mobile App is UselessI am a big fan of FT and still read their web based articles on my desktop, but since this mobile update the interface is all scrolling like a Social Media feed and proves to be useless for me. I liked the last version where you can choose your topic, find a list of subtopics and and choose from a list of articles. I don’t care to scroll through articles to find one that seems interesting. This isn’t Social Media get back to the news..Version: 1.24

App Could Be Way BetterI’ve been using the app, so I can read more because I find the printed paper daunting. I thought the app would be as easy to use as the web version, but it’s not. I was surprised to see that navigating the app was more difficult; the search tool could also be better. I don’t usually do reviews, but I want this app to improve. Considering how the FT is one of the best newspapers, I’m disappointed that the app is not as sophisticated as it should be. Please make improvements, apps are supposed to be convenient! Love the paper itself though, I always learn a lot from reading the FT! My father has always read the FT and now I do too..Version: 1.29

Journalists off their gameThe journalistic quality and depth of enquiry vary considerably as evidenced by the readers’ “Comments” appended to each piece. Unfortunately one only discovers it was all film flam after spending several minutes concentrating on what initially looked promising. The FT has the same disease as the Economist. Loads of words but little content - all too often. Navigating the web pages is not as slick as The Times and this would be easy to fix. Bloomberg seems to work better..Version: 1.44

...Version: 1.30

BuggyIf you try to post a comment and change the orientation to landscape you will lose your post. There are some issues with text and headline layout in portrait mode on the iPad. All in all it’s a functional app but too many small bugs. Looks like a half arsed effort by their app developer..Version: 1.29

Full page adsI'm seeing full page ads when I swipe left or right in an article 。 I've already paid for a subscription, not sure why there are now full page ads on this new app..Version: 1.4

Very very good articles but UX is badI love the FT articles and read them from time to time. I would read them regularly if the headline page / homepage wasn’t so messy. All other news media apps have thus far introduced newest-first or most-important-first thumbnails and subsequent thumbnails (!) below it, but not ft. It really makes a difference. This app doesn’t even feel like it’s meant for mobile. Please change this. Thank you!.Version: 1.35

Not the sameI am a long term subscriber and avid reader of the FT. But I have to say that it used to be better. News articles are sitting there for a long time and I miss the insights of people like John Autherr and so many that are gone. It seems like you are not able to retain top talent. And that is bad... no news like we used to have.Version: 1.33

Crappy appMake a native app this is just the website.Version: 1.17

Dark UX PatternsThe app itself is problematic because you can’t make an account to begin with? Tapping Sign In with Apple doesn’t give an option to sign up or sign in unless you’ve previously made an account, but there’s no way to achieve this in app from what i can tell. You cannot sign up for an account without paying money for a subscription or starting a trial, i.e. putting your card details into the website (not the app). The app is useless and uses dark patterns to force users to start trials / subscriptions via the website bypassing Apple’s guidelines - this isn’t consumer friendly. You don’t appear to be able to view any content without signing in which, if you have no account, you need to do outside of the app - this should be flagged for breaking the App Store rules..Version: 1.34

Unusable app and a non-cancellable subscriptionI download this app in March following an offer on a reduced subscription. When I tried to load the pages the page times out without finishing the download. I cancelled the subscription as a result. Now I have just found that the subscription is still active, so the reduced rate offer has turned out to be a very costly mistake for something j haven’t actually been able to use. There is no subscription in my subscriptions list to cancel and I am getting no reply to my email requests for someone to call and sort this mess out..Version: 1.41

FT Shoold Allow Subscribers to Save and Store Full Text Articles for Scholarly ResearchThis app and the FT site doesn’t allow paid subscribers who need to use these articles as sources for academic or scholarly research to save full text articles to organizers like Pocket or Evernote. As such the FT subscription is worthless. Other major news publications allow subscribers to save full text articles for future reference and use as source materials. A serious scholar or researcher needs to be able to keep full text articles from various publications on specialized topics in one folder or location. The way things ate at present, a subscriber has to log on to the FT app or website, then go to a different site, location or folder to compare or supplement the information in the FT article with that of articles from other publications like The Economist or Bloomberg. This is a huge nuisance indeed. New regulations are needed to stop FT from engaging in this monopolistic practice..Version: 1.23

Mostly PoliticalFT increasingly filled its articles with boring and irrelevant political commentary instead of covering business trends. Also they despise their print customers and will try to bully you into becoming digital only. Terrible customer service, hollowed out newsroom, obsession with Trump & Johnson. Hardly covering emerging markets..Version: 1.25

Great app except for Weekend EditionThe app works well. I love the AM Edition feature. It’s very unfortunate that this feature doesn’t work for Weekend edition. If this could be fixed, the app would be perfect from my perspective..Version: 1.30

New Update is TerribleUI change is not great. At all..Version: 1.42

Have to log in every day, sometimes twiceEvery time I open this app in the morning, I have to log in again. FWIW I log in using Google. Often in the afternoon or evening, I have to log in /again/. While the app is aggressive about pulling stories down for an offline edition (a genuine utility for my subway commute), this means I absolutely need to be connected to data the first time I open the app. At this point, that’s resulted in my having a little chore every morning off logging in as I walk to the subway. Otherwise. FT’s coverage is what it is, and the app design is fine — nothing revolutionary, but it works..Version: 1.24

Needs a true “offline” modeAnnoys me that the app shows a “edition ready for offline” message each day but the app won’t load without an internet connection. If an edition is downloaded for offline viewing, it should be available until a newer update is downloaded. That way the app will always be available offline. No point downloading content if I can’t read it on airplane mode or outside of coverage..Version: 1.46

Good UI, Tough UXThe app’s interface is great for things you only do once — add topics to track, share links, save articles. However it’s much more difficult to scroll through a list of headlines, read one, and then jump back to the same place in that list. Instead, it sends you back to the top/beginning and you have to find your way back. My own “myFT” profile has a quite long chronological list of articles. When I open an article published 4 days ago, I hate being forced to scroll down past >70 headlines to find the ones published 5 days ago. I should be able to jump back to the same place in that list. Same recommendation applies for Search results (would also like to see filters there) however I understand such a feature would be harder to develop..Version: 1.34
