Calimoto Motorcycle Navigation for Negative User Reviews

Has some problemsIts a nice app, and I liked it at first. However, at the moment I don’t hear any sounds when I lock the screen right after starting navigating. This pisses me off and did not used to be like this. So I tried to change the bluetooth audio channel (from media to hfd?), and that does not work either. Restarting my device and closing the app don’t work either. Another problem is when importing a route, it recalculates the waypoints. Now this might be something in the gpx file format, but I don’t think so (just use the route as is in that case). I can manually insert a waypoint, but then the route can be fully changed or the waypoints are not labeled correctly. *sigh* When it did work for me, to go to a single place at a time, it was great. Relatively cheap compared to a navigation device like TomTom and the right kind of functionality. I’m gonna reinstall the app to see if that will fix the audio….Version: 7.0.10

Expensive but…How can I turn off or exclude major freeways. For example, near my place there is the Orwell Bridge and other major motorways. Very dangerous road. Already crashed on the Orwell and don’t want to do it again. I want to find routes around it. Or exclude it from searches with a filter. ie; exclude A roads or M roads. Otherwise looks good..Version: 6.5.4

AlrightJust alright really, it finds new routes that I’ve never been on before but mainly for a reason ie they are farm tracks and b roads that are pointless really, the app will route you off an actually good road to divert through a village only to put you back on the original road minus a few good bends, I did a free trial that I forgot to cancel once the 30days were up won’t be renewing..Version: 7.6.6

Took me around in circles for 2 hours.Tried to use it on way home to avoid motorways. Selected ‘twisties’ setting and it sent me down horrible single track roads with gravel multiple times. I eventually found out it took me around in circles TWICE when i saw the same sign 3 times. Funny but i can imagine it really ruining someones day. The arrows for turning bug out and the distance to next turning sometimes read ‘0’ which isn’t helpful. Overall not a very polished app and didn’t take me home on fun roads as intended..Version: 7.4.0

DisappointedThis app was great when it was free. I could count on Calimeter scores for twistiness in the 20s for every planned ride, sometimes in the 30s and this was just using the free winding option. Now I paid for it and can’t get any scores above 12? All my routes are simple direct routes. It won’t give me anything fun even on twisty. I wish I hadn’t paid. Completely disappointed that it can’t deliver what it says it can..Version: 7.5.9

Not really up to the jobEither I’m a glutton for punishment or I just had a little too much faith in the ability of the folks at Calimoto to get this thing fixed. I’m on my second year’s subscription now, and while some of the original glitches have been ironed out several new ones have taken their place! I really do like the random route generator, and it’s found me a lot of fantastic roads near my home that I had no idea existed. Having said that, the actual navigation part of the app is extremely poor! It is clunky, slow to react (causing turns to be frequently missed) and often leads me through some inexplicable diversions for no apparent reason. All of the settings have been double and triple checked and the iphone is a recent model. To recap, great for planning routes, but there are far better apps to navigate you through these routes (often at a noticeably lower price).Version: 7.0.3

Great app if you don’t need navThe concept is great, I really like the design of the app and it is fast and stable. There’s just enough there that it doesn’t feel like they didn’t throw in the kitchen sink like some competitors. HOWEVER, the navigation is a dealbreaker. Voice cues are severely too late, recalculating takes too long, and it seems to recalculate before a wrong turn even occurs. I wish an app like this would just send waypoints to Google Maps to let it handle the nav, while continuing to track the ride..Version: 4.6.0

Bad business model and not a great appThe app has several floors that make even Google Maps a better option. It will force you to sign up for a trial to get it to work at all and then will not give you any notification that the trial is ending. It will then charge you a LOT of money. Don’t sign up and don’t bother… It is not worth the VERY EXPENSIVE cost. Personally, I forgot to cancel the app during the trial and when I asked for a refund within two days, they just pointed to the terms and conditions… As you would expect. If it was worth the money, then they wouldn’t need to run this dodgy business model..Version: 7.7.5

You can't even use gps without paying 70$ for a yearI used this app back in 2022 you could gps and track rides for free, now you cannot even use gps at all without buying a year of premium. Worthless app without gps or any of the features that are locked behind a paywall.Version: 7.5.9

Fast & Easy ButYou easily end up in single file back lanes. GPX export and import especially with Garmin files either doesn’t work at all or has a lot of bugs when riding them (waypoint management). Really sad is that with every restart the app needs to verify your credentials (being premium or not) to use it. No signal, no app and it doesn’t matter if maps have been downloaded. Would appreciate a premium off road (green lane) edition that would ja for a couple days without the need for a phone signal..Version: 7.6.8

One starEverytime you update the app it becomes even more useless and hard to use. I am trying to plan a route from Paramatta in Sydney to Robertson Pie and no matter what option I select it just wont go through Bangor bypass. Google apps is much better , if you choose to avoid motorway. I am not paying any more for these half baked ideas..Version: 7.5.9

Hmmm- Don’t let it re-route you… its not very good at it. Sometimes it will insist you hit every way point (can take you back home as the start is a waypoint) or will skip all waypoints and reduce your journey by miles. - sharing your route with a friend is buggy. 4 times out of 5 friend can’t open map and every-time it takes you to the app store first. - Lets say the first half of the journey you want over quick. Second half some fun on the winding roads. Well, if you stop (say at a services) during the first half of the trip the app will re-route the entire trip from that point on using winding roads.. annoying. - starting a ride from anywhere but the planned start is a gamble… could take you anywhere! Jump in option has issues. For planning a random ride its good. Just don’t go off plan!.Version: 7.0.2

Useless free trial periodDownloaded the app and seem good when planning a trip, tried to use on the bike before purchasing and set a small area 5 miles and this was outside the scope of the free trial, so reduced it to 0.5 and then 0.1 none of which was within the free areas? Come on, it’s not that expensive but, I’m not going to pay until I know it work for me on the bike and a small test would confirm this rather than waste money on something I won’t use!.Version: 6.3.0

It wasn’t an update - it’s a different appWell, I did try to express my concerns over social media without response about this update. I had a tour set for 9th April with all routes pre planned and unknown to me the update occurred a few days before as planned routes refused to open in maps. All my planning ruined for the first day. Spoiled a good weekend for me but some time with my old friend ViaMichelin soon ensured that my friends had a good time. The old app was great!.Version: 7.0.4

Not worth the moneyAt 60 bucks per year, this app is too expensive and doesn’t offer a lot more than other similar apps that cost a lot less, have a one time fee, or are free. Not worth the money. May be that is why in my area there is not much rides. And I live in what could be the capital of motorcycling in the country..Version: 7.5.0

Very DisappointingThis app has a CarPlay implementation which can only be described as in alpha test stage. When using CarPlay the app constantly crashes or freezes. When restarting it helpfully says it crashed and has recovered but it no longer shows the route being followed on the map. This frustrating experience is not what you want when riding. Positively dangerous, the CarPlay version should be withdrawn until it is properly tested..Version: 7.5.5

Blank screen on trip planner -> my ridesI can’t export my rides to GPX file. When accessing the website I got a blank screen when clicking on My Rides under Trip Planner. Tried on two different browsers and same result..Version: 6.0.5

It’s good, but…The routes that this app finds are, in my experience, awesome! But the weekly payment for the premium version is steep when considering it’s shortcomings. 3 of those shortcomings are: 1) legal speeds for the road you are travelling on are not shown 2) the volume of the navigation alerts are very low in comparison to other navigation apps 3) no alerts for entering average speed limit zones are not (maybe linked to point 1, but worth a separate mention). I didn’t realise that I had taken my group into one of these zones and a few of us will be getting tickets as a result. As mentioned, most of the free navigation apps provide warnings that allow us to adjust our speed accordingly. For this reason alone, I will likely cancel my subscription and end up using an alternative. It is a real shame though..Version: 7.0.19

Interface layoutNew layout is horrid. New users will likely be confused and not be able to locate/discover great things with the app. Maybe it’s horrible modern day interface design based on theory instead of what normal people want. The old layout was superior and more user friendly ..Version: 7.0.3

Too expensiveLove the app, great navigation for winding routes, but waaay too expensive for what it is. A biker who only needs this a few times a year doesn’t want to pay £8 for one day of access and 6 days that they don’t need. Make it cheaper for casual users, or at least introduce a reasonably-priced “day pass”. Current pricing model will see you lose out to your more affordable competitors..Version: 7.0.16

Tried it a couple of times, needs lots of work to make me try it againI’ve tried this app a couple of times now. With some tweaks it could be a great app. The visual appeal of the maps is poor compared to google maps or Apple maps. No street identification as your riding. Adding fuel stops is not easy. Just mapping out a route is cumbersome. The app overrides my selections. In travel mode during a ride the app gets confused and keeps recalibrating. Way overpriced for where the apps performance is at..Version: 5.5.2

Decent app, some issuesOnce you have a ride going the navigation works well, however if you don’t have a phone charger and you’re doing a long ride, it will destroy your battery. Planning trips yourself I have found to be very tedious and frustrating having to replan trips several times (could be operator error but either way I’m not a fan). And lastly, you cannot plan rides outside your state line without going premium which is kind of a bummer, especially for me because I live close to the MT and WY border and there are several ride in WY I’d love to track but cannot..Version: 5.1.4

Ok app, premium is kind of expensive for me thoughI struggle with an issue, I’ll be planning a route e.g. 1-16 points on the map and suddenly the numbers will switch for example the high numbers will swap with the lower numbers and my ride will be the wrong way round, the destination will be the starting point. This has happened fairly frequently and is frustrating to rearrange all the points in order. Speed limits of the roofs would be fantastic when planning also..Version: 6.5.5

Nice concept, but needs work.I love the idea of this and was eager to give it a try. Unfortunately, it just didn’t seem to work very well. The first thing it did after I set off was stick me on a 5 mile stretch of dull three-lane highway. I know the area well and there are definitely alternatives that it could’ve directed me to use instead. After that, it did start taking me around backroads, but the directions kept failing to update, causing me to miss turns, and the distance to the next turn kept freezing too, making it hard to work out where my turning actually was. I get much better results by using a very basic TomTom and taking 5 minutes to block out boring parts of the route it plans before setting off. The concept is good and, with refinement, I think this app could be fantastic. But it’s not quite there yet..Version: 3.0.0

That’s a WrapI’m a fairly new rider and tried Calimoto for the first time on a solo night ride. I was not very impressed. First, each and every time I open the app, I get a splash screen saying, “Recovery. Calimoto was forced to shut down.” I had merely closed it like any other app. Second, the navigation doesn’t give road names on the map for the upcoming turns. I don’t have Bluetooth to hear the audio turn by turn. On at least one occasion I turned onto a road that was about 30 feet from the correct route. Ordinarily not a big deal, but I’m an old woman and trying to wrestle my bike around in the dark for no good reason is irritating and tiring. Third, the navigation doesn’t follow in proportion to speed. The measurements to upcoming turns are not calibrated accurately, causing me to have to ride slow or miss the turns. Which happened three times. 🤬 Fourth, and probably most notable, it led me to a dead-end road that turned to gravel. Not good. Again, I had to turn around and backtrack. 🤬 Fifth, when having to choose another route, instead of rerouting, the navigation nagged me to do a U-turn and return to the dead-end road. I finally had to close the app and use my own mapping app. All in all, not a good experience. I see where others have had good luck with it, so maybe it depends on location. I’m in Georgia, btw. I’m deleting the Calimoto app and trying another..Version: 4.2.3

Crazy zoningFirstly there is no adventure category in the set up. The fastest growing category in motorcycling. Secondly it selects the zone for your area. I live in Tasmania and the zone it gave me is 75% ocean. It should just select the whole island it’s not that big. A disappointing app as it looks like it has real potential..Version: 5.5.0

App not free anymoreAprès 3 ans d’utilisation, il est dommage que nous ne pouvons plus naviguer gratuitement. Je vais désinstaller l’app, je ne vois pas l’interêt de payer pour le peu de fois que j’en fait. Bien dommage! L’app avait du potentiel..Version: 7.5.7

Why cant I choose a better mapI’d like to try this out to see how useful it is but unfortunately because I work in London and live in Brentwood I can only create rides in and around central london and who wants todo that when you commute there 5 days a week and the twistiest route these suggest is the a13. The next map of Essex and east anglia is just about 150 yards away but I’d have to update to premium and I’ve not really had the chance to test it out first. Would be much better to allow me to choose a different map or be clearer upfront..Version: 4.3.3

Needs Some Detail WorkTried this on a ride home from work last week. I don’t care how curvy the roads are, the app shouldn’t route me through a 25mph business park full of stop signs. Especially when it spits me out on the same road I was on before entering the business park. Also, I need more than 25ft of warning for a turn. I don’t have my phone mounted anywhere, I’m relying on audio cues only, and several came too late to matter..Version: 4.2.2

Needs workTyped in two usernames and both taken but they don’t tell you that until you enter and reenter info. Needs work boys. Deleted after third try..Version: 4.6.0

Great concept, Poor executionI want to love this app, it’s a great idea and looks very good. I am having several issues with it though. 1. Don’t count on the app to reliably track your ride. Most of the time I will look down to my black iPhone screen because the app has crashed. When I reopen the app, it says recovery, and draws a straight line between where it crashes and where I reopen it. 2. Navigation prompts do not line up to the map at all. I hear turn left in 100 feet, nothing but a cornfield for 2 or 3 miles. Just to look down at the map and it did not have a turn designated at that point. 3. Other apps similar have friend functionality, challenges, and have built a better social experience in their app. I have not paid for the premium yet because anyone who would pay for an app when the “demo” or “free” version is this buggy..Version: 6.0.6

Really? You expect people to pay?The free trial is 100% worthless! You can do virtually nothing. A friend tried to “share” a ride. I can’t even figure out how to open it. It says I have to save it. ...can’t figure out how to do that. Searched the help topics. -nothing found. It appears nearly EVERY help topic is about the app abruptly shutting down, not following the route, not properly rerouting, etc. etc. etc. Yeah, I don’t think I’ll get the version!.Version: 4.6.0

Map data not accurate and slow to keep upI’ve used this 3-4 times now on my motorcycle and have been unfortunately disappointed with the map accuracy, around the Swindon area, Ashton Keynes etc, the app often says continue 2 miles ignoring cross junctions in roads, then often says it had a mile to go then suddenly turn left/right where it seems to jump around accuracy wise. Also the app puts a way point in at the start of the journey so if I go get fuel, then say ‘jump straight in’ it seems to take me back to the way point. I paid £4.99 for a week, which is steep, you are encouraged to get a years sub, but the app isn’t up to standard for me.Version: 5.1.0

Poor address finderWanted to ride from Manchester to Alveston near Bristol. Search box didn’t recognise it but suggested somewhere else with no alternative. Put in Thornbury which is a larger town near by but same result. Didn’t recognise the correct target and suggested somewhere else. Had I not known better I would have ended up miles from intended destination. Then tried the postcode which it did not recognise. Tried various surrounding street and road names. No success. Deleted the app and will rely on previous route planning via ordnance survey maps on my iPad or iPhone or Garmin Basecamp linked to Garmin Zuni in my bike.Version: 6.1.1

Horrible appI been using this app for a few weeks. When it actually feels like working, it works good. But it almost never works good. Very quirky. Everytime i open the app, its a blank black screen. I have to close app and reopen. If you create a round trip route, god forbid you take a wrong turn, it will recalculate and start heading you back to where you started from. Half the time when i click on my rides, the little wait while its thinking thing just keeps spinning, mean while, you cant do anything till it finishes thinking. Then you get the dumb “its kinda empty in here message bla, bla bla.... And no, its not my phone. I have a new iphone XR. I have contacted support. They asked me for screenshots of my issues. I sent them, have not even heard back. And mind you, i spent money on premium upgrade. Do yourself a favor, dont waste your time on this app..Version: 5.1.2

Calimoto won’t load a rout from the near me listI just paid £40 for the app and first time using it I tried to load a ride from the “near me” ride list only to get the spinning circle and nothing happening! Not a great start for such an expensive app and I can’t find any way to get help directly from the app other than frequently asked questions. I think at this price point we should be getting direct access to the dev team..Version: 7.0.16

BadThis is a really crappy app, tons of pop up and it doesn't give nice roads.Version: 6.4.6

NOT FREE but used to be freeI really liked the app, only did two rides so far, traced a route and used voice navigation, unfortunately today i was going for another ride that i traced but when i pressed start navigation, a pop up for premium features appeared saying the voice navigation is only in premium while their website still states it’s included in the basic plan which is free..Version: 7.5.3

Login problems and no supportThe app got an update. Can’t login and can’t retrieve password. I’m a premium member and it says no account associated with my email !!!! There is no way to contact support..Version: 5.1.7

Route non pavéL application nous fais passer parfois par des routes non pavé.Version: 6.3.0

Great idea, but not great in actionRoute planning is phenomenal. Following the route is painful. Went for a ride yesterday. Before each turn there is a distance count down, like any GPS. This one, however counts down to 0 with nowhere to turn in site, and then resets to a seemingly random number between 1 and 2.5km. In urban situations, this makes the GPS completely useless, and perhaps a bit dangerous. Almost every turn had this issue, so I ended up having to ignore the distance entirely..Version: 6.2.3

Exprensive and crapAlthough I do appreciate the fact that the app finds routes for you, the navigation is inaccurate and keeps making up routes or when I’m following the instructions it’s getting lost. It also constantly tries to drag me through the air force base which is closed off for non-military. The amount of routes that are programmed is very limited and most of them just drag me through the city traffic which is not enjoyable in any way. On top of that I just realized that for premium they are asking 7bucks a week: that is just ridiculous. Possibly in other areas the maps are better but around ABQ, NM it’s very underwhelming..Version: 4.6.0

No option to give feedback in appI wouldn’t have left a 2* review to notify you of a bug but there isn’t the option to supply feedback in the app (except for map changes) and this is annoying. So that’s point 1 - add in an ‘app feedback’ option. Point 2 is that there’s function issue whereby when you plan a route and click ‘gas station’ you can’t go back to the map screen without adding a gas station..Version: 4.3.1

Next to useless in AustraliaNext to useless in Australia, zones are too small and 2/3rd of the roads & known routes are missing. Has maybe 6 of the obvious Sydney rides in the app but not much else.Version: 7.1.0

DisappointedMy first trip planning after I paid $60 subscription and already I see a MAJOR flaw in the algorithms. I live in south Florida and wanted to go up the famous A1A beach/coast route. I wanted curvy route and the app took me through US1 instead of the route I want. So I tried the non curved and got I95, a major interstate. Then I tried google map and google gave me EXACTLY the route I needed. And didn’t need to pay $60..Version: 7.0.19

Poor execution and dangerous route mappingJuly 22 review: UK based routing sees the algorithms incorrectly utilising ‘U’ roads for twisty or windy roads. YOU MUST STOP THIS. ‘U’ roads are single track roads, often country lanes, with very bad road surfaces, occasionally unpaved entirely, often loose gravel, high hedges and very poor visibility. Don’t be fooled by their speed limits being 60mph, it is an arbitrary speed limit, its meaningless. They are heavily used by farmers and heavy equipment. Stick to A and B roads!!! Then there is the gps delay. Very often laggy and giving instructions AFTER a junction has been taken. The last thing a rider needs is mixed or late information. Auto zooming in and out to give better perspective of overall journeys and approaching junctions would be helpful rather than being stuck at a low level. Again, requiring the rider to be distracted by having to manually zoom. Has useful features but some fundemental improvements to be made to make it safer and therefore usable and recomendable, which if currently is not. Apple maps much better still.Version: 7.0.18

Cannot find roads! This app is a huge piece of steaming dung! I know of and have ridden several great rides in this huge country of ours and when I go to build them in this crap app more times than not it tells me it cannot find the road! WHAT! I’ve been on that road, I’ve enjoyed the twists and turns of that road and a biker ride app cannot find it! What crap the app is! I want my money back and you can keep this crap. Couple of examples: Laughlin NV to Kingman NV, app says no road! BULL! I’ve driven it! I look for a specific address, the crap app cannot find it. What the people built it and then hide it, come on crap app, get real. Super let down. A bike app that can’t find a twisty road? Crap app!.Version: 6.1.1

Pay to navigate now?A navigation app that you have to pay to use navigation even without the extra features now… Used it sporadically for a couple of years given the many flaws (weird UX, can’t search for a business name, doesn't update road changes/closures, etc), but as a free app it was OK. Cancelling my account and deleting it, as there other similar free options nowadays (even Google maps using the “no main roads” feature gives you a similar result with all the ease and functionality lacking in Calimoto)..Version: 7.5.6

An app with great potential, but let’s itself down.I tried the auto/random route planning via the app today, I’ve had it sat on my home screen for some time. I was excited for a jaunt up towards the forest of bowland and devils bridge. It seems the app when calculating the route throws in as many “twisties” as possible (I use the term twisties very lightly here) which got me looking forward to a thrilling ride. Alas, I found myself being directed towards single track farm roads, the so-called twisties, where at best you could trundle along at a measly 15mph. Some (very few) of the roads were fantastic, but the sheer amount of dangerous roads it tried to send me down eventually annoyed me to the point I had to pull over and resort to google maps. I wanted a smooth ride ride with some good twisties and plenty of lean. I got gravel, boredom, and a sore rear end with a hint of good views. Such a shame..Version: 7.3.3

Good butI used this app a couple of times. I like the idea and they way the app looks. The navigation works well and I like the roads they find for me BUT There are some things that are not great. 1. The search for cities and locations when I try to plan a route is not good at all. I’ve been looking for a city and had to search for it 5 times before it even showed up. 2. It would be good if the navigation tells you the street names when on which you have to turn. This way you wouldn’t have to look down all the time. 3. The display should show the name of the streets you are turning on. Overall the app is good and I hope that they will fix some of the issues in the future. BTW... I bought the yearly subscription on commodes to this app because the overall is good for riders..Version: 3.7.5

Better off with Google MapsIt’s an app with a great premise. You put in a destination and they will show you the twistiest path there. It doesn’t do it that well in my opinion and what’s worse is that they have now locked down all features to subscription only access. I get it, you need a have revenue to make a product work. But without subscribing to their plan they have crippled the functionality to such a degree that that app is basically unusable. Locked down to one state, no round trip access, enter a destination and it won’t give you the “twisty” route. They have some weird roads marked as twisty, like a highway on-ramp. Then, there are plenty of great roads near me that don’t even blip on their twisty map. Honestly you are better with Google Maps and checking “avoid tolls” and “avoid highways” if you are planning a trip. Or better yet, just go ride without the phone and get lost, find some new roads!.Version: 7.0.5

Left and right mixed upMy first ride with this app and all seemed great until the voice instructions said turn left when the screen said turn right, I knew I should turn right and thought maybe it was down to bad satellite signal but 4 miles later it did the exact same thing this time said turn right when display clearly indicated I should turn left. I was using voice Arthur but shall try again with default voice just to check but definitely need a look into from the devs..Version: 6.4.6

Works but UI needs improvingThe app works as it should but for £50 a year I was expecting better. Whilst the app is used less than more popular systems, the UI of certain apps like Waze outperforms that of Calimoto. For instance no speed limits are displayed as standard and I often have issues with the map (for instance the map doesn’t follow my movement on the screen so I can follow directions) or the fact that you can’t set routes from the U.K. into France (or any left hand traffic into right hand traffic) is a bit annoying. With some development and remodelling this app would be excellent and I’d gladly pay the fee. The routes it chooses are pretty good all things considered, but the UI is not yet up to par..Version: 7.5.9
