SleepTown for Negative User Reviews

Circle feature pretty uselessI thought the Circle feature might be neat for my house mates. Unfortunately though everyone in the circle must have the same sleep and wake time which is useless for us because I get off work at the same time one of my housemates wakes up. Would love to see Circles in which people can have different bedtimes and still contribute. I messaged customer support through the app to request this and they haven't seen the message after a week. The app is great outside of that, but just don't expect too much ongoing support by the looks of things. Will adjust review if this changes..Version: 3.2.17

Good app to track sleeping habitsIf you sleep before or at your set time then you can start building houses (which is very cute!) if you sleep after, then the punishment would be not building of houses... it’s worked for me cus I really want to see all sorts of variety of houses building.Version: 3.2.17

Good app but they don’t update often :(It’s a good app and I’m enjoying it just like I do with the Forest app but if it isn’t updated at least every two months it gets buggy and we want new features too not just the same old stuff. There should be ways in which it forces one to wake up (I love the shake to wake up thing for example in this app)..Version: 3.2.17

Very buggyI don’t know what’s up with this app but it won’t let me tell it I’ve woken up in the morning, and even though I’ve failed to reach my wake up goal it tells me I’ve failed then immediately tells me I’ve succeeded and gives me a building?! Needs work. Hoping it gets fixed as at the minute I feel I wasted my money. Concept was good..Version: 3.1

Please allow time changesI love your tree game but this one is not as user friendly. If i forget to click that I am up even if am up it does not count the build - lost all buildings this way. Is there no way to amend the finish and start times according to actual? This is to try and fix my health not for buildings and at this time it does not inspire sorry..Version: 3.2.17

Good!I still go to school, so some mornings I have to wake up really early and others I like to have a nice lie-in. This app, however, doesn’t allow for that. Also, when you do fail, it keeps a building ruins there, and that is annoying as it is reminding you of your failure - it should be more positive. The bedtime is a little frustrating also because if you miss it, then you don’t have the restriction of not going on your phone. Perhaps if it allowed you to still sleep, but not create a building, that would be better, or just something like a lamppost? Other than that it’s a great start to an app and I use it a lot! Recommend it if you like the Forest app..Version: 2.0.1

A bit too strictIt’s a nice app but it’s so strict, if you miss by a couple minutes, even if you still get to bed in roughly the same time, the building will be destroyed. Another thing I don’t like is that once you missed my sleeping time that’s it, you failed the night and there’s nothing else you can do. But really, even if I missed my sleeping time by hours, it still helps to just click “build” and put down the phone when I do decide to sleep. I want to use this app for helping me get away from my phone, and i still want to use this feature even if I did miss my sleeping time. But right now “missing you sleeping time” is just the end of the story. I don’t even want to open this app after not being able to build a single house for three days. There’re tracking apps more forgiving rewarding and helpful than this one. ————————— What I think might help is to add a period in which you want to go to bed, then a deadline by which you have to get off your phone. Say you want to sleep at 10pm, it may help to give you a period between 9:30 to 10:30 in which you can hit sleep and start building the house, but still allow you to have some flexibility, say I can still reply to a text at 10:05. But then by 10:30 is the hard deadline after which the house will be destroyed if you look at your phone again..Version: 3.0.1

Like, but need more flexible optionsI just got this app and am really excited to try it our!! I was disappointed however by the rigidity of some of the options. I would prefer if the sleeping duration could be set by the user, even if it falls outside of the 4-10 hour recommendation SleepTown gives. I have a hypersomnolence sleep disorder and would love to be able to track the amount of sleep I need in app, especially as it’s really celebratory for me when I’m able to achieve the rest my body needs! Being able to set more than two days off would also be a nice option. Overall, the app looks really cute and I am looking forward to seeing how I might be able to make it work for me :).Version: 3.3.8

Not really helpfulThe concept is there and I understand its goal is to help me build a regular sleep schedule but it’s so strict?! Going to bed and waking up at an exact time to the second is pretty much impossible. The app is also very slow, tried to build my own town and it took forever to load, felt laggy as well..Version: 3.12.3

Useful appGreat app. Bugging out on iPhone 7. Won’t override the bedtime alarm/do not disturb function. Alarm went off half an hour late and the building was still building. Not sure what’s happening here.Version: 2.3.2

Forces you to use your information...Even though you pay for the app... they withhold basic features (getting/using tickets, choosing buildings, etc.)... as an incentive to make you sign up for an account! Sleep habits is personal information. Add the basic features to the premium version of the app—without forcing users to give their personal information! I contacted them—they didn't even reply. NOTE: I will change this review if all features are added to the app (without needing to sign up for an account)..Version: 3.2.16

Fundamental flawI like the concept and it’s very motivating. I’ve actually managed to get to bed on time which seems like a miracle! But it doesn’t really help on the other end because the alarm doesn’t go off consistently. I followed the instructions but it only worked the first night and then hasn’t since. I lost a building and my streak because of this which kind of makes you want to abandon the whole thing. So I guess if I want to continue using this app I’ll have to use another app for the actual alarm. Disappointing. I hope they can fix this bug because then I would definitely give it five stars..Version: 3.3.7

Alright but the circle sharing needs improvementApp is really great on its own, but if you join a sleep circle with friends you can’t change the sleep schedule Eg. my friends and i would like to make our sleep goal 12am-6am for now and slowly change it to 12am-5am as we adjust, but this isn’t an option. Please fix this so the group circle sleep times aren’t permanent!.Version: 3.2.17

Doesn’t make senseIt’s annoying that leaving the app causes the building to stop I use a separate app to analyze my sleep but I can’t use it without the building stopping.Version: 2.3.2

😕Compared to forest , this app seems a lot more complicated and I’ve been using it for a week but I still am baffled about how it works. It’s not so encouraging as well cos you don’t get to buy buildings like you can for forest so it’s kinda not motivating to look forward to. I don’t know what the coins are for too if you can’t buy buildings and only expect unexpected ones to pop up. It’s very expensive to demolish a building too unlike forest . I’m not a big fan of this app , but since I love its brother Forest, I keep using it and am giving a chance anyway. Maybe after using it for a month , my view may change but who knows, of course .🤫.Version: 3.1.6

Frustrating bug fails achievementsNot logging on my weekend “day off” (this is under settings) does ends my streak and I have to start all over again. I’ve been using this app for over a year now and I’ve failed the 100 day streak four times now. Starting to cause more anxiety than earned rest..Version: 3.1.7

Possible AdditionI think it would be very useful to be able to set different alarms for each day, for people with varying schedules. It is a good app for motivating you to get out of bed. However, it doesn’t work for me because I have different times I wake up on different days..Version: 3.2.16

Does not allow for sleeping late - makes the app useless to me PLEASE FIX THISIf I accidentally go to bed even 10 minutes past my set bed time then I’m not even allowed to press sleep on the app. It’s ridiculous, I really like sleep towns alarm but the fact that it doesn’t allow for going to bed too late just means that if I DO miss my bedtime, I immediately lose all motivation to actually go to sleep. The only solution is to set the bedtime on the app for later than you actually go to bed, but then you also lose motivation to go to bed at the right time. I don’t understand why there isn’t some kind of points system to rate how close to your bedtime goals you are. I just feel like it’s such a stupid “feature” of the app, because it feels like I’m being punished or judged for something that a lot of the time is out of my control, I wish there was a way to at least turn this off..Version: 3.2.15

After the town “out of sync”, a large part of my town was GONE!I’ve used SleepTown for quite a while already (200+ buildings), but today I’ve encountered something that’s frustrating me the most over! I was trying to adjust the layout my large town same way as usual just now (nothing drastic, moving around a couple of small lands, adding items, new buildings), but then suddenly “out of sync” warning. I thought okay, maybe WiFi connection was not good. Then I turned off the app and turn on again, then a large part of my town was GONE! Out of curiosity, I tried to move a part of the town to see what happened, then out of sync again, and when I got back, even more of my town gone! The buildings and wonders that are gone got back to the selection list, but what about the other items that I’ve spent coins buying?? Even if I get all the coins back, I’m not happy because I spent quite some time putting into thoughts how to arrange my town with all the details I imagine a town would have, so I’m even more upset that all was gone due to stupid bug in the app! Please help me to fix and get my town back..Version: 3.2.17

Good but buggyI absolutely love this app, it’s been a great help to get into a sleep routine. Only issue is that it’s been very buggy lately: the alarm won’t ring and the wake button doesn’t show, which means I have to force quit the app, which in turn collapses the building... I’ve contact them about it with screenshots but haven’t heard back since. I’m currently looking into an alternative as it’s starting to take the enjoyment out of it..Version: 3.2.17

Just doesn’t workI’ve been trying to use this app for a week. First, the alarm never went off for the first five days. I emailed the developer but got no response. Then it finally did go off - on the day that was supposed to be “off”. So on Saturday I was woken up at 5:45am, finally figured how to turn it off (after waking everyone else up) and went back to sleep. When I did get up, it told me the building had failed. I’ll live with the disappointment, but in terms of tracking habits through visuals, the app clearly doesn’t work. Since it requires me to be on my phone just before bedtime and right as I get up, creates any level of frustration in between (including nearly making me late for work), and doesn’t actually track any sleep habits whatsoever or with any degree of accuracy, I’m not sure this was worth spending the extra money on. It’s too bad, because I really like Forest, which has helped me be more productive at work. But this app seems like it could use some serious re-conceptualizing before it could actually be useful..Version: 2.2

BuggyBuilding always gets destroyed for no reason even when plugged in. Alarm never goes off, and as much as it’s important to build a sleep habit there should be more flexibility around changing your bedtime and wake up without loosing your streak. The whole concept is brilliant and genius but it just needs a lot more work to be worth the money. The inconsistent alarm should be fixed first because it meant I missed a meeting at work which is awful. Also if you could change your sleep time without loosing your streak it would make the app so practical and would easily change this review to 5 stars. Hope you guys fix this cause you’re on to something. It’s great for a 9 to 5 but for someone like me who’s a music producer, the hours are honestly so varied because it’s part of the job. So giving someone like me the ability to change my wake up time without loosing my streak would be amazing. Just to be able to say, tonight is unexpected and I need to be let off the hook without having a building destroyed. Maybe a pause feature would be good? This could just be a switch implemented in the settings tab. I have an iPhone X too so it’s no problems with having a dodgy phone. Joe.Version: 3.12.3

Downloaded and deletedI will never use an app that I have to sign into before using. you don’t need my personal information to let me play a game I paid for. I regret wasting my money on a game I deleted less than an hour after I purchased it. privacy matters to me..Version: 3.2.7

Tries but doesn’t get thereThis app has great intentions but it’s just too inflexible and frankly downright frustrating. If you wake up a little bit late (and we are talking 15 minutes here not 2 hours) your building gets destroyed. Also, you have no scope to adjust your go to bed time to a later time on some days. The very rigid rules that work so well on the Forest app don’t work here, because in Forest you’re planting for no more than two hours at a time, at a time of your choosing. Sleep doesn’t work quite the same way. I know it would be great if it did, but this app could be better at encouraging sleep in real life..Version: 3.1.7

Could be better if a watch version is providedThis is a good app that forces you to cultivate the habit of sleeping on time. However, it could be much better if it could also monitor your sleep quality by using smart wearables. Also, by doing so, the shaking phone challenge can be replaced by shaking the watch.Version: 3.3.7

Too inflexibleI wanted to like this app as I have suffered insomnia for so long. Unfortunately, if you don’t wake up easily and even a little late, the app destroys the building and there is no way to erase it. In trying to build good, new habits, it is very hard to get motivated if you just have a block of destroyed building. The game should off a little more motivation and flexibility at the start as there are lots of people that need time to build habits..Version: 3.1.4

Day offsStreak breaks even though it’s my day off.Version: 3.2.1

Not lively enoughIt needs more motivation and determination, as well as consequences. Yes you will not end up with a built building; however, it is not like the app “forest” created by the same developers. “Forest” allows for productivity and its major use due to the consequence from disturbing the growing plant. If you do not complete the process, the plant will die and destroy the forest’s beauty. This dead plant is turned to ash and costs a lot of coins to get rid of. This gives a strong motivator in not breaking the process of the plant growth. What would make this sleep app affective is if it was more lively. For example, towns people going in the buildings. Transportation driving around. Building roads. Build a park for the townspeople to roam and play in. Build a beach or desert. There are multiple things that could be added to make this app a lot more fun and entertaining. It doesn't have to be something that requires a lot of time, but also have a bit more involvement. These are just some suggestions to help make this app grow..Version: 3.2.1

NonsenseIt makes no sense to me that your building get destroyed if you “sleep in” when In reality I’m trying to use my phone less and this feature isn’t really helping. Other than that it’s really great. Please implement something to be able to change this. Thanks!.Version: 2.2.3

VERY WELL DESIGNEDThe simple yet imposing design is perfect for anyone who needs to get strict about sleeping times. I’m a long time user of Forest (their other app) and the way this one manages its coin system is super cool and well adapted to the needs this app aims to fulfil..Version: 3.3.7

Great potential with glaring problemsThere needs to be an option for flexible sleep time. We should focus on the amount of hours slept, not always when. It's also ridiculous not to be able to use your phone if you get up in the middle of the night. At least make that an option, like how in Forest you can opt to use your phone during growing. The unexpected sometimes happens..Version: 2.3

OkIt's an OK app and I understand it is to encourage regular sleep patterns but it is no good for someone who works shifts or has to wake up at different times each day. It almost needs to allow you to go to bed and wake up at slightly different times. For example sometimes I'm up at 630 someone's at 830 but my time of going to bed will be different- it needs to allow for the real life fact that people can't go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday. If it was done on your amount of sleep you get in hours that would be better- ie- I tell it I want to get 8 hours sleep, I set it when I sleep and it sets the alarm for 8 hours later. Also it needs the option to change the alarm volume and even nicer would be to allow me to use my music for an alarm tone. It's a good start to the app but I still find Forest app more useful..Version: 1.2.8

Beware of privacy policyTo get the tickets you need to build special buildings, you have to create an account. They catch you off guard by asking you to do this the first morning you wake up, right as you wake up. Their privacy policy basically allows them to collect everything about you. They collect your birthday as a part of the sign-up, and by signing up you agree that they can share data with and collect from third-parties information like the cookies on your device, your sleeping data, your photo, and more. And these are “[a]mong the types of data” they collect. It appears that the primary purpose of this app is to gather information about you that they can sell to others. Who isn't getting enough sleep and is vulnerable to impulse buys? Now they know..Version: 3.2.17

Wish there was more flexibilityI’m really bad at staying on my phone when I’m in bed so an app like this is really helpful in helping build a habit. However, there are a few things that really make it hard for me to like this app. I really enjoy the “game” aspect of it and how it’s a challenge because it really incentivizes me, but it’s just not realistic to check-in when I go to bed every single time. For example, tonight I missed going to bed by 1 minute and that automatically constitutes as a failure. The problem with this is that now I don’t have an incentive to not be on my phone. I could just move my sleep time to 11pm, but that defeats the purpose of it. While ideally my sleep time is 10:30pm, it’s just not realistic for me to go to bed at exactly that time and sometimes it’s just a matter of forgetting to check in (even with the notification). I would like there to be an option for a “smaller” incentive if you miss your bedtime goal but still don’t want to use your phone at night. i.e. maybe it should count towards half a building or something similar. Unfortunately, this app just isn’t working completely for me at this time but I will keep on using it with the hope it will help..Version: 2.3.1

Needs changesI think it’s a really cute idea, but not flexible at all. Some days I sleep in more than others, but SleepTown doesn’t allow you to change your schedule day to day, only weekly (or else you lose a bonus). I think it’s unrealistic to maintain the same sleep schedule all week without being able to change the dates less than 24 hours before.Version: 3.2.17

I want to like this appSo there are definitely things about this app that I like! It’s very cute and a fun way to incentivize not being on your phone before bed. I have the sister app, Forest, for concentration and staying off my phone during the day and that one is perfect in my mind! But this one still needs some changes to be perfect in my mind. I’ve seen a few other reviews suggest having a sleep time window and a wake up window so you don’t automatically fail if you’re off by 15 or 30 minutes, which I agree would be really nice. The strictness of destroying your building if you leave after you decide to go to sleep is effective and I think that should stay, but there definitely needs to be a 30 minute cushion between sleep time and wake up time. My only other complaint is the days off feature. I’ve selected Saturday and Sunday as my days off since that’s when I get to stay up later and sleep in later, but I still get notifications on those days to go to bed in 30 minutes and missing those days still breaks my streak. I hope that some improvements can be made cause I really want to like this app!! It’s just hard to build a sleep habit when it won’t give you weekends or any leeway..Version: 3.2.7

Version: 3.1.4

Not a good app for students!I am a student and I was super excited for this app. But the problem is, I go to school 5 days a week, and have Saturday and Sunday off. I set those days as my “days” off, but when I slept in on Saturday morning, I woke up to a destroyed building. I get up very early for school, and it’s be insane if I got up that early on the weekends just to form a “healthy sleep habit”. Also, there are days of school that we have off for holidays, in service days, snow days, etc. Since most of those days are weekdays, I’m not sure what to do when I want to get up later because we don’t have school. I don’t want my building to be destroyed, but I don’t want to be up at 5:30 in the morning on my day off. I hope you read this review and take it into consideration..Version: 2.2.1

Too time restrictiveI understand the goal is to help the average person establish the common habit of consistent sleep, but I work a varied schedule and apply a polyphasic sleep style. I like to get up a be active after my initial sleep and then return to sleep for a bit before my day, then nap at my scheduled times and intervals. I have not had much success with applying this app practically and functionally for my lifestyle. I would appreciate a more adaptive approach and I how you can sleep. Please consider some adjustments to help make your app for inclusive and helpful. Thanks for the effort and the good you have and are doing for the people overall. Unfortunately this one isn’t for me, but I am trying. If I change my mind or habits I will update this appropriately. Take care.Version: 3.12.3

Pretty but inflexibleIt’s very pretty but it doesn’t allow for any slight mistake. It’s annoying when you miss your sleep time by a few minutes and you have to wait until the next day to try again. I’d still like to be stopped from using my phone even if I miss the deadline..Version: 2.3.2

This app could be 100x better lI can't even use it because of the hard and fast bed time. Every other sleep app lets you change your bedtime goal day-to-day if you want. My goal is not to be in bed at PRECISELY 10 pm every single night, it's to get in bed by the bedtime I choose for that day, and go for 8 hours with playing with my phone. I purchased this app because I loved Forest and was super excited to use another one of your apps, and the app is great in every other way. But it's unusable until there is the choice of some flexibility. As soon as that happens I will be happy to update this review, start using the app, and hopefully give a tip if it works well. Pleeeeeeeeease institute this.Version: 2.1

Missing bedtimeI overall like this app, but my main issue is that once you miss the sleeping time you totally lose out on using any of the apps features. I use this app to keep me off my phone at night and it would be nice to be able to turn on the sleep mode even if you missed your set bedtime. I wake up multiple times during the night and having the app dissuades me from using my phone when I wake up, but if I miss the bedtime I end up not being able to take adventure of that feature. My suggestion would be to allow users to still use sleep mode even if the bed time has been missed. Maybe they don’t earn points from it, but we can still take advantage of the apps features ( which is the most important part of me.Version: 3.2.11

Helpful, but not reallyI can definitely see how this app can help me get more regular sleep, but as others have said, it is a bit inflexible, and I say this because every day of the week for me is very different, some days start later, and some earlier..Version: 3.1.3

Buggy and frustratingI’ve gotten inconsistent in my use of this app, because of how often it messes up. With Forest, you need to actively quit the app and do something else, for it to fail you. Sleeptown? Who knows! It will boot you out for turning the screen of your phone on to check the time in the middle of the night, or when a notification comes in, or apparently just because it feels like it. Waste of time..Version: 2.2

An IdeaLove the interface and idea behind the app. Although, what motivates me to use Forest is that ability to plant real trees with my coins. SleepTown doesn’t motivate me enough; if you could, say, buy bricks to build houses in developing countries with your coins, I’d be much more motivated to use it. Just an idea!.Version: 2.0.1

Wish it had the same layout as ForrestI way prefer how you can chose each time you use Forrest the length of time you want it to be on or the stop watch feature - I think the stop watch feature would be a lot better on this app as you can then see how long you have slept for and have it so you’re in a focus mode and cannot come off the app so you don’t get distracted..Version: 3.2.17

Frustrating/fussy and negativeOn one hand I love the building aspect of this app-I've been using it about a month. On the other there are some fundamental design flaws that run for to good sleep hygiene; some of which would happen in any sleep promoting app and others which they could improve. It's never pleasant to wake up to "you have failed" if you oversleep. The alarm does not adjust with any change you make to your target wake up time. The alarm itself is wonky, and doesn't always go off. The controls are fussy and there are far too many rules to do the simple task the app is supposed to do. You have to remember to push "sleep" every night before you go to sleep. I don't see a way around this but it's one more thing to think of when you're in bed. Finally, some creative mind will have to come up with an app that doesn't compel you to be on your phone. Screens are a big part of the reason many of us have bad sleep habits! Plus, it would be nice not to have to be on your phone when you wake up, too. As it stands you have to unlock your phone, go into the app, and activate it (and then collect your coins, so you're immediately playing a game right when you wake up). In short, too much fuss for a simple goal without a lot of incentive..Version: 2.1.2
