✓ PYRAMID SCHEMEStep 1: download the game for free. Step 2: pay for the ability to play it. I figured there was a fee to play the whole game, I understand there must be a way to make money on the app. I just figured there would be a way to play at least a basic version of the game to see if you like it. There’s not. There’s no basic way to play for free, you must pay if you want to play, and I’m certain if you pay the $10 to play, and you don’t like it, there would be no way to get a refund. ✓ Good game, shame I’m such a n00bThanks to excellent customer service from Aspyr, I figured out how to manage the settings in my phone/handheld computer so I can play this game. I love how this is a full game, while I’m out and about. It is still engrossing. The “one more turn” still means I sleep too late. It does chew up battery life, and the phone gets too warm. And this is the best strategy God game I can hope for, given the rest of my family has taken over the Wii (Zelda: Twilight Princess is da best game Eva!) and the desktop computer, and my cheap laptop is now mostly unusable thanks to MS and lots of background processes. ✓ Price?Editing my review to be more helpful. This game obviously is great. However two major things concern me. The experience of this game is not the same as playing it on the P.C. That shouldn’t need an explanation and the devs should be well aware of this however it upsets me that they clearly aren’t. Furthermore, this wouldn’t have taken the same time for the developers to create this as it would the P.C. Version as the models, landscapes and more are already there. I really cannot see how they have put this price tag on the game and even from an basic economical standpoint they would get a lot more money if they lowered the price to suit the current mobile market. ✓ Single player onlyApparently no way to play multiplayer (other than LAN or hot seat), or if there is the developers can’t be bothered to respond to requests for help. Several other issues plaguing the game: dropdown menus that can’t be closed obscure critical portions of the screen during play. There are other ways in which the limitations of a smaller screen and mouse less interface seem to be too much for the developers to overcome. The game can be played, but it’s far more difficult (and for the most part needlessly so) than on a pc..Version: 1.4.6
✓ Overpriced considering lack of care in this platform.This game runs at a ridiculously low frame rate and looks very bad compared to the console/PC versions. Basically they built it for a very old iPad at the time of release and never bothered to update assets or even unlock the pitiful frame rate. ✓ Crashes continuously.Don’t buy it ... yet! It is a good game in the tradition of Civ. But game crashes regularly, and often, usually just shutting down the game app itself, but sometimes even crashing and force restarting the iPad. I tried turning off WiFi, and use airplane mode to reduce possibility of background apps, updates, or notifications interrupting.... And it still crashes all the time. ✓ Paid for gathering storm but it won’t load and support won’t helpBought this base app years ago, and was pleasantly surprised how well it worked on iPhone. Bought the gathering storm expansion as well. At some point I hadn’t played the game in 30 days so my phone off loaded it for the space. I cleared space, re-downloaded it, but it won’t re-download the G&S expansion I paid for. It gets stuck on either 0% downloaded or download pending. A lot of fun to play and well suited to iPad form factor. Major problem is late game, when sending bombers or launching nukes with lots of units around, the game freezes and must be force quit. This is game breaking for certain styles of play, and especially frustrating when playing long turns. Frustration is compounded by a very long app launch time. ✓ Frustrating first experienceIt’s hard to know how good the game is when the In app purchase system gets in the way. I originally went for the 60 free turns on my phone, which worked but I found the display a bit small for real play. I then tried on the iPad but the purchase didn’t follow. I then re-purchased the free 60 turns on the iPad hoping this would at least get me to the main menu. The game dutifully removed the option for the free trial, but failed to get me to the main menu. The only options on starting the game are the full unlock (very unlikely given my experience) or the tutorial, which is also a poor experience beyond the first ever attempt. 2 stars because the tutorial (once you get past the first 5 turns or so, which are a frustration of blocking dialogues) seems to show the game is decent implementation..Version: 1.0.6

✓ Great Game but some serious bugs - UpdatedIn the past several months my 2k account keeps getting disconnected and several of my hall of fame achievements keep disappearing. Since the latest DLC the game is broken with lots of serious bugs. Some modern units don’t heal. Can’t read the game during trade and voting b/c LOC file name issue all over the game. Game is a mess on ipad right now and nearly unplayable. I love this franchise so much but these glaring problems are making it game unplayable. It’s been long enough. Update the game and fix these bugs! UPDATE — Game was “fixed” but hall of fame achievements keep disappearing. This is about the third time I’ve lost half my achievements. Seems like every time there is any update you’ll loose your achievements, which makes trying to earn them pointless. I’ve loved this franchise for years. ✓ Honest review Keeping it short.I love civ 6 On IOS it’s very nice, if your looking to buy this game in 2023 I think it’s worth it. The DLC is expensive but gives you more opportunity and hours of play. This game does have some issues with Purchasing The downloadable context sometimes it doesn’t even install. You can try to reinstall but it doesn’t work, say goodbye to whatever DLC you had. ✓ Kind of turns you off of the seriesI paid the $7.99 for the base game but won’t be buying any additional content. I will say it is a very good port of the game and IS a lot of fun but… I have been playing Civilization games since the early 90’s (I still remember the big book you had to used to verify your right to rule every so often in the first version) and on Steam, I have somewhere around 1000 hours of just Civ 6, across all DLC and base game. When I wrote a rough draft of this review, you could get Civ 6 and all DLC from the Steam Summer Sale for less than $50. You couldn’t do that with the mobile version. As much as I’d love to be able to play the full game (which apparently the developers couldn’t be bothered to release at once, instead making this one of the single most expensive games in history, and probably the most expensive outside of The Sims) after paying for virtually every single game in this series for more than 30 years, I cannot imagine any scenario where I buy a game and all of its “expansions” more than once. No matter how well the game actually plays, predatory business practices will always taint the experience. Point in fact, I doubt I’ll buy Civ 7 when it comes out. Why would I? They’ll just release dozens of other “expansions” for $20-$40 a piece. I thought I aged out of gaming when really I just aged out of wasting money..Version: 1.4.3

✓ No fun and very tediousThis game is so confusing and wasn't any fun at all. There's way too much to learn, the screen is very cluttered and it was so tedious. Also, you can't stack units to attack so if there's a coastal city it's nearly impossible to capture a city, from my experience. I sat there for 15 min trying to take a city, turn after turn, bombarding, shooting, while referencing strategy guides on how to do it, but I never could. Why do devs think more complex is better? ✓ Too many BIG bugs as of December updateEDIT: does this update fix the Loyalty Screen issue? Because why bother to get halfway into a game with Eleanor for it to stop working? Reported over and over. It’s not mentioned. Civ 6 is buggy on all platforms, but I was playing it happily on iPad until the last update in mid December. As others have noted, computer parameter language is shot all through the game, blocking needed information. Even more frustrating than that, before turn 200 my Loyalty lens stops working, making it impossible to play a loyalty flipping game. I've used iPhone X, 11" iPad Pro and a new iPhone 12 Pro. I've been a Civ fan since when Civ II first came out. And I enjoyed this one, its familiar but new and the controls were quite well suited to mobile play, although a small phone may be annoying. Unfortunately, the way you are trying to circumvent the Family Sharing and offer only in-game Purchase of the full game loses the rest of the stars for me, and also the sale. I would love my kids to be able to experience this on their iPads, but unfortunately, instead of getting the sale of one full game with family sharing, you are getting no sale and no potential for my kids to experience, and thus purchase any addons or expansions, nor promote the game in future. Instead of trying to money-grab, maybe reconsider your App Store strategy. I am not willing to pay $90 for the game on my Mac, but I would be willing to pay $40 on iOS if my kids could also play it. ✓ The game runs great until it doesn’t.Civ has been a long time coming for the iPad, and I’m glad that it’s here. However, every game I’ve played so far has had either minor, game-breaking, or critical bugs spring up. Some bugs I’ve encountered so far: Units, city-states, and other in game entities become intangible following in game events. For example, I couldn’t interact with a city state at all following my liberation of it. Sometimes re-starting fixes the problem, sometimes not. This happens often with traders. Sometimes I cannot send my own trading units anywhere for hundreds of turns. Other times it’s foreign traders that seem to be stuck in my own territory. Losing large amounts of gold despite running a large surplus. Everything seems to be going great. You’re making a lot of gold per turn, but then you notice that your total gold has been dropping dramatically. Eventually you get a warning that you’re out of gold and need to make changes. Except there’s no way to fix the supposed problem as you appear to making a healthy surplus. You have to start a new game. I remember having a similar problem in Civ IV on PC. Worst of all, sometimes the game will reach a point and just stop. Re-loading does not fix this, and you have to start a new game, or even re-install. There are many game and content related issues that could be addressed in my opinion, but the developers should focus on stability first..Version: 1.0.4

✓ Mixed feelingsCiv will always be a favourite game of mine, but civ 6 elevates tech and a classic game to a weird new level, where I hope updates will provide a user friendly experience, the current layout honestly confuses me, I understand the basics, but traditional actions, are more complicated, greyed out, if there's a city issue, it's great getting the notification, but a pop up with easy to click actions to relieve city issues would be helpful. I partly was expecting what's advertised with the PC version, other countries (like Australia) and the option to diversify genders of other great nations. I would love scenario where the game is based on a premise of peace, and the ideals humanity is currently lacking, it would be great when s battle takes place, we get zoomed in to see the battle unfold, or even when clicking on a city, we get to see it operating as a city with units currently fortified in the city. ✓ Terribly DesignThe AI in this game are so unpredictably random. Civilizations that you appear to have good relations with will abruptly declare a war against you. They also receive advancements that aren’t given to human players (i.e., wonder construction, barbarian overpopulation) - the game appears to be programmed for players to not do anything but engage in combat. There is no historical value included in this game. If you’d like to attempt historical gameplay, good luck. You cannot complete several wonders in their historic Civ, even on the True Start Map (i.e., England) I could continue this rant but I’ve wasted too much time on this game already. ✓ Fun game with flawsFrom the first stirrings……. God my eyes roll whenever this stupid diatribe starts every time I start or load a game. Most games let you skip this, but know you have a super clunky game that has a super long load time even on an M1 iPad. Seriously you need to change this up, The last thing I want to hear is the same poorly written text repeated over ad nauseam. The interface is cluttered and awful. I use a 15 inch iPad and still there are overlaps of information, pop-ups that block, you name it. Did you pay a preschool UI designer?? ✓ Decent port but has bugsAs far as iOS ports go, this is a game that makes the transition to mobile devices well. The interface is easy to navigate and the game handles limitless game turns. Whilst overall the game is a faithful replica of the PC version there are a few issues which limits the overall experience: 1. Odd bugs like city states suddenly making unilateral peace with you or units missing turns. These are infrequent but enough to be noticeable - good thing we have auto save. 2. Not the full complement of playable civilisations. Relative to the price I’d expect more DLC content, particularly given many PC players will be paying again for the privilege. Hopefully this can be resolved in future updates. 3. Turn speed can be slow - large maps are fun for empire building but can be time consuming. Admittedly the game does warn you of this but even on an iPad Pro it’s just a bit too slow. Perhaps future iPad hardware will improve this or hopefully more optimisation by the devs. I’d happily give a five star rating if these issues could be resolved. Overall the devs should be congratulated for their efforts, if you are a Civ fan and thought revolutions was a bit too basic then this is for you. ✓ Great game, but things could be better.It’s amazing what they have achieved to deliver on mobile! Great game overall and I haven’t encountered many issues given my device capabilities. The game takes a lot of battery, but it’s a huge game to run on a small device, so I’m not surprised. Only issue that has been a pain is that restore purchases never work. It is an absolute nightmare to restore purchases, it never downloads even if you do have plenty of storage and bandwidth. It is such a pain to delete the app, log out of iCloud etc every time as it logs me out of all my apps where I have items downloaded and have to re-download everything again. It is a huge nuisance and extremely poor design. I haven’t been able to access new frontier pass for MONTHS now because I cannot restore purchases. I would kindly ask the developers to look into this ASAP - as I don’t mind spending money to get new add-ons etc, but it’s putting me off getting anything at all due to how poor the journey is. ✓ Does not run reliablyWhen the app loads and works properly the game is fantastic. There’s even a way to run some light mods by placing them in the games install folder. The problem is that the game just straight up won’t launch 90% of the time. If reinstalling it could fix the issue it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but to reinstall it you end up losing your saves most of the time. DLC purchases get lost and have to be restored regularly as well. All in all this iOS port is a buggy mess that you should probably stay away from. It’s a shame, because when it works it has all the great Civilization gameplay we are used to on pc with fairly impressive graphics as well. Honestly I'd rather just pay smaller amount to unlock the various civs we can play. It's well over $100 for the full game and expansions and I'm absolutely not paying that, not to mention you cannot use family sharing whatsoever as it's in-app purchasing.
