LingoDeer - Learn Languages for Negative User Reviews

Not as good as it used to beI used to study Korean on this app and it would explain how words and grammar are used and why and then go onto a lesson. Now it’s just a memory app..Version: 2.8.40

.It is a great app with explanations and all and it explains very well. If you’re willing to pay to continue the lessons after the first lesson then go ! But for me I’ll pass, I’m a kid and can’t learn with this but I think that if you pay you won’t regret it. So it’s quite sad.Version: 2.8.60

Powerful AppI’m using this to learn Korean after months of Duolingo (which has a terrible Korean course) and Memrise (which i found had me forgetting everything i’d learned within moments. Lingodeer is by far my favourite method for quick learning and revision when i’m not using my textbooks. However, it doesn’t tell you when to speak formally, politely, informally, etc. when answering questions by typing hangul. This is a problem for me since I have to turn my sound off when revising grammar as I don’t want to hear the Korean before typing it or it isn’t challenging. Also, some of the things taught would never be used in real Korean conversation. This is where I refer memrise (although the layout of Lingodeer makes the good bits of information in the app miles better than Memrise for me). I understand that this is a hard issue to avoid, and I appreciate all that this app does or I’d never have paid for it. I think it’s the perfect app to use, especially when you’re just starting out. You make a lot of progress in no time..Version: 2.4.9

Its a very good app but i can’t split screen on my ipadI like to use goodnotes and i wish i could use lingodeer as split screen to make it easier instead of writing my studies on paper and then transferring it to goodnotes.Version: 2.6.15

UpsetI at first had a app called drops that I used to try and help me learn korean. It wasn’t working that well for me so I wanted to try and find another app. I happened to stumble upon this and at first thought it was the best thing ever. From having a almost 5 star review, and TONS of good reviews I wanted to try it out. I read so many of the reviews and almost all of them talked about how this was the best app ever and that it was “free.” Do literally yesterday I downloaded the app and did the first lesson of nationality. (I already know the korean alphabet). Just from using this app for such a small time I loved it. It had things that seemed like would really help me such as the tips which I found VERY helpful. Then here I am on the last part of nationality doing the story. I did everything and tried to move on to the next lesson. When I did I got worried because it kept of saying that you needed pro. I thought that maybe it was just that lesson or that maybe I hadn't finished the lesson before. Nope checked every lesson after that one and all of them said pro and then I knew I did the lesson before right. It has me so mad because I really can’t afford the amount of money for one month. I saw every where of people saying this app was free. You get literally maybe 2 lessons before you have to pay. I honestly really loved this app but I’m now really upset to know a big chance for me went down the drain..Version: 2.0.21

Was good until..So I did used to subscribe to lingodeer and loved it to get me started with learning the korean language. I recently was going to come back to learn japanese, french or chinese and I saw a deal where you could have a 7 day free trial and then a year sub. I wanted to get a feel of it with the trial so I started that deal, however it instantly charged me with the 70 plus pound subscription and forced me to stay subscribed. I tried to receive a refund via the apple report a problem and both times I explained what happened they wouldn’t refund it. Now I feel slightly cheated as I just wanted to do the 7 days and then I probably would have been a subscriber. Now, if the developer see’s this, I hope you can offer the refund and I might still decide to subscribe. Hope it helps..Version: 2.8.61

There’s no free versionI would never pay this INSANE price. There is no free version. Too bad, because the lack of gamification (compared to DuoLingo) has a good chance of competition. Too bad the pricing formula is a total scam..Version: 2.8.56

Paywalls almost immediatelySure it’s a good app to start with but the minute you’re done with barely the first lesson, just as you’re convinced it’s a half decent app, wham, hit with that paywall so hard you’re going to have a metaphorical concussion. I’m just gonna stick to dua, at least with Dua you get more than barely a single lesson..Version: 2.8.60

The alphabetI’ve trying to learn Japanese with this app but I realize the alphabet wasn’t correct.Version: 2.8.40

Very good but room for improvementI’m at about 40% through level 1 and the glitches are getting pretty annoying. There is a feedback window, but for all of the times when I have reported incorrect scoring or problems with the user interface I’ve never gotten an acknowledgment or any indication that anyone is reading my messages. On DuoLingo I regularly received messages back either telling me that my response is now included as a correct response, or a reason why it is considered incorrect. Duolingo did not have any of the wonky interface issues that this app has. Sometimes it’s impossible to place a tile where it needs to go so I just give up and submit an incorrect response just to move on. Or you need three tiles to form the correct answer and there are only two spaces. Many other instances that are frustrating. Finally, I usually study at night and I like the dark background, until I finish a lesson and get sent back to the screens with blinding white backgrounds - ouch!!! All that said, it is a very good learning tool if the UI were better it would be a 5!.Version: 2.0.12

Pay before you know if it’s worth itYou really expect me to buy your course when there’s so little free content? How can I know if it’s not terrible past the first lesson? Just make it free and run ads to make money like Duolingo. Or at least make the entire beginners portion free so we can gauge the quality of the course. A timed trial won’t help because then I can’t learn at my own pace..Version: 2.8.36

App used to be greatApp was amazing with great free courses and offline access. They are really looking to make a buck now. Complete and utterly useless for a free user who just wants to learn some Korean for fun. They are looking for 100$ to get to the second lesson. Please don’t support developers like this..Version: 2.0.26

Not goodI would usually use Duolingo instead of this, however I decided to use this, as I wanted to specifically learn Japanese and Korean. On Duolingo, I was previously learning Japanese and was happy with it, but when trying Korean on it, I was disappointed and wanted more from it. Lingodeer will teach you sentences in Korean straight off and was teaching me topics in Japanese that took me ages to get to in Duolingo. However, after my first lesson on both Korean and Japanese, I learnt that to learn further on, you had to pay for it and the prices are absolutely absurd, and with Duolingo, it gives you an option for a 14-day free trial and also an option to keep on learning for free, and all Super Duolingo did was no ads, extra resources to help your mistakes and that’s all. This app would be amazing with that option, and was doing better than Duolingo, however if an option like this isn’t added, I will have to continue to use Duolingo.Version: 2.9.11

Boycott this app until pricing improvements. This app is extremely informative. Too bad it's horrendously expensive now when a few months ago it was free. Why can't I use flashcards anymore??? I WANT TO LEARN ONE LANGUAGE NOT 13!!! DON'T MAKE ME PAY FOR THEM ALL!!!.Version: 2.0.24

Preview too limitedSo I’ve done hiragana and one lesson of Japanese, doing hiragana (doesn’t seem to count as a lesson) and nationalities. I’ll cover what little I noticed. There is an issue with the stroke order for や. I checked other resources and it’s incorrect in the app. It’s an extremely basic thing to get wrong and with free access to only two parts it’s hard to know if this app is going to be worth the money. You can’t even look at the content of premium lessons to help decide, it’s completely locked. Also there is no advice or structure about how to remember the kana, it shows stroke order but doesn’t say why it’s important. You are only shown computer type and not handwriting and some kana look very different and have extra strokes when written. I think this probably is a great app and maybe worth the money but it’s just impossible to know without even a taste. So I am going to utilise the accessibility of other apps and likely purchase those first before I come back to LingoDeer..Version: 2.5.47

MoneyU can’t even get through the 2nd lesson without paying.Version: 2.4.9

You screw it up.I've been with this app since the beginning. But now there's a subscription. I should have known this is were it was going. I simply cannot justify a perpetual cost every month (in an age of soring bills you want to do this?) since Duolingo is doing the same thing for free..Version: 2.0.18

Handicapped without a membership.I’m not sure if this is just me. I looked through the reviews and everybody said good things about the in-app purchases; that they weren’t necessary and you could learn without them. I was learning Japanese, I finished “Alphabet” and “Nationality,” the first two lessons. Immediately when I tried to go on to the third it asked me to get a membership. I was confused, I thought this app was supposed to allow me to learn without paying! I tried redoing the previous lesson, and it did nothing. When I clicked on the button that said the lesson was locked it just pulled up the “buy put thing please.” page. I have no intention of spending on this app, but from what I did see it has a nice style and great way of teaching. Im just extremely upset that I was mislead into thinking I could use this app without having to pay. I’d definitely recommend Duolingo over this app; the only purchases are to remove adds. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Why the hell do all the reviews say that I can go through without paying? I’m so confused..Version: 2.0.7

It’s okay.I’m currently learning german for my religion to keep going on as my oma is the only one in my family who knows german—but you don’t need to know my life story. well, let’s start from the top. the first thing i see is it requesting me to translate a word i hadn't even learned yet. i think it would be helpful if it taught me the translation first, showed me how to pronounce it, spell it, and then test me if i knew the word or sentence afterwards. but no. i was anxious, i didn’t want to get it wrong. yet i did, and that really frustrated me if i’m being honest. i went on with the app because i wanted to understand it and give it another chance as i just started using the app. which i did—and still am. although i got angry because i got it wrong, i learned the word, and the pronunciation because of the correction. it DOES continue to make me translate words without them showing it to me first which kind of frustrates me but it’s fine. i may seem overdramatic but i learn in a certain way. you ACTUALLY have to teach it to me. i guess the corrections help in ways, but it makes me so frustrated to the point where i can’t be comfortable learning german because of how anxious i get of getting the word or sentence wrong. i do have to say, this app has great qualities and features, it just needs a little upgrade , you know? thanks for reading my review..Version: 2.7.2

Can’t even get to the second lesson without paying. :(This app was great, I did the first lesson and learned quite a lot and was soooo excited to get to the second. It said it was locked so I went and took the test out for an hour trying to unlock things. Then I realized no matter what, you have to pay $100 to get to even the second lesson! If you’re a free user I don’t suggest this app, it gets your hopes up and crushes them again. Sorry. The app could’ve been great..Version: 2.6.9

Unable to do 2nd lessonSo I downloaded this on my old phone because it has more available storage but my mom doesn’t know I download this app but to do the 2nd lesson I need to pay and I’m unable to pay, don’t suggest app..Version: 2.9.1

There’s potential but the paywall is way too earlyI understand the need for paywalls, particularly in sophisticated apps where there’s a lot of hard work put in by the developers. But there’s also a need to balance that with giving the customer enough to tell whether the product is worth their hard earned dollars. The two free lessons are the alphabet and nationality-most people who’ve tried to pick up the language for an hour or two on any other system have covered this and there’s so little vocab at this point that the answers are obvious. And the alphabet is a poor indicator of what the rest of the system will look like regardless. So the system looks like it might be good but who’s to say since I can’t test it against material I’m not already familiar with? Even expanding this to an additional lesson or two (the determiner/possessive) would greatly increase the ability to get a sense for the flow of lessons in this app—the very next lesson seems to have a different section “learning tips” that I didn’t try in the previous one. Will every lesson be in a completely different format from the previous one? At this point I can’t tell. Given there seem to be some sixty or seventy lessons in the first level of the language, I highly doubt giving free users the next lesson or two will cut into profits and it certainly would help people like me who are on the fence determine if it’s the right system for them..Version: 2.4.3

Good app but still limitedI’m a native English speaker using LingoDeer to learn Japanese. The courses are very well thought out and thorough, however the most important part of learning a language is practicing what you learned and LingoDeer is lacking in this regard (before you get to the fluent section, which is really good). The flash cards use fake spaced repetition (actually not spaced, but sorted into 3 buckets. If you say a card is easy you’ll never see it again!). There also just seems to be less emphasis on practicing and mastery as a whole since the sentences and exercises you see in the practice section are exactly the same as those in the lessons, resulting in a system where you see some vocab words in only one or two sentences. I would expect for there to be more sentences/contexts for vocab in a service as expensive as this one. As good as the lessons are, the lack of real spaced repetition and sentence variety really decreases the effectiveness of this app in my opinion being that the flash card system is the only way to practice translating full sentences. Hopefully they consider adding real spaced repetition and other practice features because I think that would really vault LingoDeer to a 10/10 language learning service..Version: 2.8.60

Korean- best app, tried most of them, don’t expect improvementsPros: Teaches you who what when where and why you use certain words. Very easy to learn new sentences and sentence structures. There was only one chapter that I had to repeat a few times due to difficulty. Cons: terrible for learning new vocabulary words. There is flash card practice (separate from main lesson) which is nice, but it doesn’t drill speaking or typing, so it’s very easy to forget the word you just answered 5 seconds ago. And most of the time it will repeat the same question back to back just in audio form, so you’re not forced to memorize it, then it moves onto the next word. Overall it’s the only app that doesn’t require 10 other apps to learn Korean. Well worth the monthly price but… There has been no improvements over the last 6 months, and I don’t see a reason for them to improve until their rating drops. They’re offering a lifetime membership so the proof is in the pudding. There will be no improvements other than bug/interface fixes until they have a monetary incentive to add anything..Version: 2.8.58

I’m not sureI wanted to learn Thai but, it is not there even though there is a Thai language interface option. If I can set the language to Thai but can not learn it, it is pretty annoying. You should add Thai..Version: 2.8.55

LLWhat the heck you ain’t getting my money.Version: 2.9.14

A lot to like, but...Currently a premium member and so far the content of the Korean is excellent. However, I'm also using this alongside Duolingo and after a week I'm slowly realising that I prefer Duolingo's shorter, more numerous lesson plan layout. I also prefer Duolingo's sound design. By comparison, lingodeer is really flat and a bit boring to engage with. LingoDeer however has superior voice recordings. They sound more natural compared to Duolingo's more robotic sounding voices. I feel like I'm progressing steadily which is great, but when I come to pick up my phone I find that I really want to open Duolingo first before I open LingoDeer. If they work to make the user experience more engaging (shorter lessons, higher XP earnings, rewards, more joyful video game like sounds and celebratory animations) I'd be much happier. They have the content. They lack the personality..Version: 2.5.6

Too expensive for one languageLook, I don’t want to learn a hundred diff languages. I just want to learn one. Why isn’t there a cheaper selection where we can just pick one language for a certain price? I have no interest paying $100 when I’m not going to learn any of the other languages in the package. With that money, I can go to an actual teacher....Version: 2.0.22

It was Amazing...Lingo Deer was, and still is an incredible app and super useful for learning languages quickly. However, after discovering all my progress had been lost, I ALSO discovered that you know had to pay for everything after the first lesson. Meaning you generally only learn ~4 or a bit more phrases and words before you have to pay. The app is still good none-the-less, but i’m not prepared to pay and i’m a little disappointed by it..Version: 2.2.3

Can’t go to Second Lesson Without PayingI really liked the first unit on this app. It’s super annoying that you have to pay to progress any further. And it’s not cheap Canadian it’s like $18 a month. Not only do you have to pay for further lessons. There’s already ads on the free version. I don’t understand how that doesn’t pay for it. I would not mind watching ads if I could continue. Really disappointing because it has so much potential..Version: 2.9.6

NoWould not recommend..Version: 2.8.59

🤨I was enjoying it at first but then I realized u can’t even do the second lesson without paying..Version: 2.8.58

ScamLiterally the scammiest app I have EVER had the displeasure of downloading. App said $119.99 for lifetime access, and it charged me $180. As if that wasn’t bad enough, it charged me $180 TWICE. Twice! And it didn’t even work, said my payment method was declined even when I checked my bank account and it DID charge. Please take my advice and consider before purchasing ANYTHING off this scam app, everyone..Version: 2.8.54

Cash grabThe first lesson was really great and I was learning a lot and feel like I could’ve learned a lot from this app except for the fact that the second lesson you immediately need to pay for something, you can’t even complete the next lesson or even go through it without paying so that’s basically it. could’ve actually learned something if it wasn’t a cash grab..Version: 2.9.7

Eh, liked it at first but…I dont recommend getting this app if you dont want to spend a hell a lot of money. 2 stars from me..Version: 2.8.50

Don’t buy itVery average, I don’t like it. Dislike. I subscribed for 1 month. Big mistake (((.Version: 2.8.52

Get rid of itUsed to be my favourite when it was free. Now you can’t even get the second lesson unless you pay 10 dollars a month or an annual fee. Used to be one of the best apps but now it’s garbage. What a waste..Version: 2.0.26

Please make LingoDeer free :((This app is really good and it has lots of lesson but why do we have to pay to learn lessons :(, it’s quite expensive to me and I can’t afford it but I desperately want to learn Vietnamese. You can still have premium lessons, but please don’t make lessons cost money, or learning other languages, somethings that can be in premium is learning offline. But otherwise this app seemed good based of the one lesson I could learn for free and I want to continue to use it if it wouldn’t cost money. Thank you..Version: 2.6.0

Still needs decent SRSI’ve been using this for years and it’s very good, with one glaring exception, which is the flash cards. They really need to put in actual SRS options for those - memorization is crucial for longer term retention and as it is I have to manually copy the cards into Anki to get results, which is a pain and takes forever since I can’t even copy the actual text from the app. They say it’s SRS but it isn’t, which is aggravating - they’re just dumb flash cards, no dynamic timing, no separation of listening/reading/speaking skills, etc. Good sentences, once they’re in Anki, but useless before then. The grammar is very nice, puts it way before duolingo and Rosetta, but the pacing also gets a little weird in the second “chapter” - you’re learning some weird advanced words like “burnable garbage” and the grammar specifics of doing favors for people before you’ve even gotten to if-then conditionals. Wouldn’t be that big a deal though if didn’t have to copy all this stuff into another app just to remember it properly. They added some “ongoing content” in their fluent section which is awesome, but I wish they didn’t focus so hard on themed “stories” and had more options for just brute-force sentence variation practice. Just a bunch of different sentences by grammar type is fine, I don’t gotta have a whole cute story to go with it..Version: 2.5.51

Good but brokenI really enjoyed using this app, but upon leveling up, despite paying, I just get a blank screen and no lessons to select anymore which is unfortunate..Version: 2.5.50

Regarding Free Content V/S PayingI previously had LingoDeer on other devices and it was a very helpful and informative language app (I actually found it a lot better than others I had used during school, etc.) However, I was about to do my second lesson today when a pop-up appeared saying I would have to pay to continue. I am all for paying for something good quality, but it is a bit of a shame when I can’t even do more than the Basic lesson for free, AND when I don’t currently have the money to spend on this app :( Wish LingoDeer and the team all the best. You guys have made a seriously good app, it’s just a shame I won’t be able to continue to use it any time soon.. Hopefully in a few months or so I will have some money aside, or the app will change enough to once again have (a bit more) free content..Version: 2.5.10
