Only good for AmericanGreat if you have an American accent. Useless with just about anything else. Voice recognition can’t understand RP vowel sounds so not worth the money if that’s the role you’re doing..Version: 4.6

Please read!!!Right I need to learn my lines for GCSE and thought that this could help me with learning them and the way it does it is brilliant because the way you put the lines in and how you need to say the end word clue for it to move on is brilliant. HOWEVER you only can record only 8 LINES are you taking the piss how can I learn a full Shakespeare script in 8 lines and the prices for subscription is pointless. Do not recommend unless you have only eight lines to learn !!!.Version: 3.7.3

WAS an amazing appThe latest update added a BEEP at the end of the lines?!WHY?! This ruins the entire take..Version: 5.0

Very expensive! It’s a subscription based service that is very expensive!.Version: 4.7

Not user friendlyI don’t have enough time to tell you why this app is so difficult to use. Just trust me it is not a smooth and joyful experience. It’s beyond frustrating. The IDEA of it is great, but it is clunky and glitchy and, did I mention frustrating? So if you don’t mind dealing with all the glitches to get to the part where you can rehearse than sure go for it. Otherwise, hope for an update so they can get where they should be..Version: 5.1

Ouch.It really is a great concept/app, however it doesn’t always catch my cues and will at times jump my whole line. All of a sudden, I am locked out of my existing files (greater than 8 lines), unless I pay an exorbitant subscription fee? For a very useful app, but one which is still glitchy, charging over $100 -recurring - seems very steep..Version: 3.7.3

Used to be greatThe App used to be fantastic for actors. However, since the update its extortionately priced. Wouldn’t even mind if it was a one off payment, but a monthly subscription at this price isn’t reasonable..Version: 4.9

The idea is better than the realityIt’s expensive for what you get, the idea is good and It can be useful but the speech recognition is choppy. They should increase the ammount of free lines you can record until bugs are worked out. Hopefully will only improve.Version: 4.9

GlitchesThe app has a glitch where if you run a scene multiple times you have to exit and re-enter each time otherwise it won’t pick up the cues..Version: 4.3

Purchased plan not honouredOh, I purchased a year subscription for $109 only need to be continually denied access to my subscription. No way to contact anyone for help.Version: 5.1

Not greatYes, I will admit this is a pretty amazing idea, but like others have said before me the audio is glitchy and sometimes my reader doesn’t pick up on cues. Also, especially for long scenes, the fact you can only record 8 lines before having to pay is something I can’t get by. I understand making money is important for developers but seriously? As someone doing a small play this is just terrible, but imagine doing longer scenes and having to split it up into so many parts. Since this app is such a good concept, I wouldn’t mind paying 10 bucks for a subscription, but per month? That seems a bit too much, especially for people who can’t just throw away 10 dollars every month just to have an app play recordings of your voice..Version: 5.1

Not good enough to be usefulThis is a great concept but in trying to use it for a self tape I found it not to work well at all. If you have a lot of actions before or after your lines,it doesn’t account for the time if you add that text-that’s more for yourself. I found that without hearing anything, video just stopped recording before I could finish the audition. I even tried splitting up the actions by adding them in separate ‘MYSELF’ lines and that didn’t work. I had to touch the screen to get it to keep recording I the middle of the scene. (No Good) Also, even after setting the additional video to make the reader audio sound more natural, it still had a loud in and out static which was just awful. I re-recorded with low volume in a super quiet space and it still didn’t work. You also have to be very close to the phone even for rehearsing lines for it to pick up when you’re done for the readers line to activate. Or at least, say your lines loudly, which is unnatural and defeats the purpose..Version: 2.0

BUT!!!!Great concept works amazing and is literally genius. Sometimes videos don’t save. Sometimes the app won’t recognise the cue based on accents..Version: 3.2

Works for me - but dislike not havingI find this App to fit my style of learning lines, especially its use of speech recognition to detect the end of a line to cue another character’s line. However the fact it is linked to a single device versus account is problematic. During the trial, there were times I want to focus on my iPad App; while other times I want to use my iPhone (e.g., to practice while walking). To do this, I had to take a second subscription!? Yikes! Of course I forgot the 24h cancel policy, so now I’m out double fees for a month. Compared to other similar apps it’s clearly the priciest - so I wish the developer would figure out a way to link to a single Apple ID across multiple Apple iOS devices..Version: 4.10

Great on phone-wish had more accessibilityI love this app because for once as an actor I can record a scene partners line, hear them read aloud to me, say my own lines, and after the app heard the que word it moves on. Previously, I had been using the voice recorder on my phone and would read the scene partners lines, leave a gap of dead air to account for my own lines, and continue. This app allows me to easily record and run lines on my own. I really wish this app would work on my Mac as it would help greatly with auditions. It’s always hard getting someone to read with and record for tapes. I had tried getting this on my Mac so I could record app the lines there, but record on my phone, and alas, this app is unavailable on laptops. Being able to access recordings on the Mac would be a huge game changer and big help to any actors out there in a similar situation..Version: 3.2

Fix the appI would give it five stars if it was free. But to pay for the app and have all these problems is beyond frustrating. The voice recognition is awful. Saying the same word over and over, just to get it to move to the next line can really throw off your process. Now, whenever I add a silence between lines, it deletes and you have to keep adding it every time it starts over. Or worse it just moves to another place in the scene. Use the money to fix the app please.Version: 5.1

Great ideaI love the idea of this app, it’s very helpful sometimes, but I’ve been having issues for about 7 months (since the last update) and writing in for help has been met with radio silence. And for an app that requires a subscription, I’m not happy… and with my year coming to a close on the 18th of July I’ll not be renewing until I see improvements. The main issue I’ve been having is, I use this mainly as a line learning/rehearsal app, and I am unable to turn off the screen and continue learning lines as I walk around. I have had this issue since the beginning of December 2022. It says “Speech recognition error” and tells me to consult the FAQ which doesn’t have info on any of this. I’ve tried changing the language, I’ve reset my phone. Happens on my old phone, on my ipad… this is an issue and needs to be fixed. Or I need a response from the “help” to try and resolve it. Maybe I’ve made an error in my setup. It’s a 5 star app, lost 2 stars 1 for the issue, 1 for the lack of customer service..Version: 5.1

Great for rehearsing lines, but not for self tapingI was on vacation this week and really wanted the self tape function to be my solution, but after bout two hours of getting the lines loaded for three scenes, it was just too problematic to try to manage the cues. In theory, this is the perfect app. I eventually grabbed a friend and did it the old fashioned way in a fraction of the time. It is a great tool for learning lines, but for that function the cost of subscription is too steep. There are aspects of it, technically, that are brilliant - love that I can modify the reader’s volume and match the room tone. Transcription is wonderful. The timer is awesome. Tried to connect my remote for the tap for cue function but it didn’t work. There was no way to adjust the video settings (that I could find) and the color and exposure were off. Normally I don’t write reviews - this has great promise, and I hope the developers continue to make improvements and include more detailed instructions about interface in the future..Version: 3.9

Too ExpensiveI love the app, but I don’t love it for £75 a year. The sound recording quality is much better than most line learning apps, but the AI doesn’t recognise words said in an accent (which you need for your parts) and sometimes cuts you off while you’re still saying your line. I can get a human to do that for free. £40 for lifetime access would be much better. After all, I paid £20 for Rehearsal years ago and use it to this day..Version: 4.7

Pretty useful, but has big faults and can be improved for much larger successThis app is great for practicing my lines and memorising them- so I use it for that. However, small things don’t work smoothly- like when you go to edit the text of a transcription, if there is too much transcribed, you cannot scroll down to edit the latter portion of the text. I understand dictation technology isn’t quite perfect yet and the app is limited to dictation tech, but some in-app software updates can help with some problems. For example, an option to have a secondary ‘QUE WORD’ to move to the next line would help with a particular word being misunderstood. Also, an option to use the second to last word as a cue word would help loads (These should be options that can be toggled on and off in an menu). Overall- still quite useful if you work around the hiccups of the dictation not working 100%. It’s good for line practice but not good for using as a reader in replacement of a person got a self-tape audition (which would cause this app to be revolutionary if that was changed)..Version: 3.2

Mixed bag. Horrible cue pickupI want to like this product. A friend recommended it, and so I bought a 3 month, when I should have just done one. Was really hoping it would solve the problem of recruiting readers for audition taping. But the voice recognition is just awful. I can’t get through a scene. When you’re in a time crunch and need to get a tape in, and have to keep repeating your cue, it just doesn’t pick up the word like it should. Which is odd, because it transposes your speech into text surprisingly well. So it’s great for monologues/speeches, though I wish there was a speed adjustable dial for playback. I just can’t use it for my primary need, which is to not always need a reader when doing a self-tape. Just frustrating..Version: 3.7.41

It was the best app ever and now they chargeThis app was becoming the best app I’d come across for learning lines, I’d recommend it to everyone I knew and rave about it constantly. It’s really good for what it does. HOWEVER it is no longer free, it’s quite expensive for what it is. £9.99 a month if you won’t wanna pay £74 upfront for a year. Shocking. I would really really beg the creator but please could you lower the prices, it’s making it inaccessible for people who aren’t rich..Version: 3.7.3

GlitchyThe app often doesn’t hear the cue word. The teleprompter should have a feature where it moves asking at the speed at which you are talking. I’d also like it if you could create a folder and then within the folder you can create scenes. Also an app like this world be useful if you could upload a PDF of your script and have it break the characters down as written. Not sure if that’s possible. So far it doesn’t accept any PDF I’ve tried to upload. Also recording your lines is fine but if I have to go back in and’s edit it so it looks readable - worth periods, exclamation points, question marks etc. , it becomes a time waster..Version: 3.2

Was SO good until subscription costsI’d have the occasional issue of the app not recognizing a word so a page into a taped audition and it stopping really frustrated me but it is such an amazing tool… the unfortunate part (for me) is the subscription cost. I wouldn’t mind paying for it one time but a subscription really cuts deep. Actors have enough to pay for without going poor with yet another thing to add to the list. Congrats to the creators on making a great product but unfortunately with it not working consistently and the major subscription cost prices, I’m just not sure how much I will keep using it. As an aside, the customer service is absolutely incredible. Thank you for being so quick to respond and always helpful..Version: 4.2

Disabled functionalityI paid for a 3 month subscription and just a few days after I received the Apple Pay bill for the subscription, ColdRead disabled all the functionality associated with my subscription. Not happy with this at all.Version: 5.1

Too expensiveYou shouldn’t have to subscribe to get more than only 8 lines at least 10 or 15 then subscribe I get you want to make money but it’s way too expensive and I’m a young actor and I am struggling to learn my lines I cannot afford to subscribe so please make it more lines then subscribe or make the subscribtion a lot cheaper please..Version: 3.9

Great Concept, but some issuesThis app is a great concept. But there are a few key features that have bugs and create a hassle. 1) as others have mentioned, it sometimes cuts off in the middle of a line. It has happened on both “myself” and “reader” lines and it’s rather frustrating. I’ve never recorded a whole scene without this happening and having to go in and redo it. 2) the transcription is not good. It can’t do punctuation at all and messes up words a LOT. If those things were fixed I’d easily bump it 1-2 stars..Version: 5.1

Good app, but very pricey for limited innovationReally is a great app for actors. The main reason to get this app is the voice cue feature, it transcribes your lines from audio and then for each line your last word is detected by audio and it will play your “reader” lines which you pre record. Elimines the need for a reader, huge. But the app is so expensive, actors are k own for being broke hard to recommend for the price. Now, my main suggestion here, they have an Apple Watch app, if they improve the integration with the watch, I think this could easily be a 5 star app. Right now their phone app is a simple trigger, you’d think you could walk away and be good, but it still detects your speech from the phone. If they could make it so the WATCH picks up your cue words then you could just pace around and say lines talking slightly into your wrist. It’s be so much more relaxed. But really any improvements and mew feature tying this to the Apple Watch would set a new bar for line reading apps..Version: 4.12

Great, dependingIt’s been a godsend on my iPhone, it’s a nightmare and super frustrating on my iPad Air, which is what I use mostly for work. Won’t communicate with my magic keyboard, it’s the only app I have with this problem. Would be nice if it would update with some bug fixes, it’s also hard to back out of some features without closing the app entirely. It would also be nice if it could work with the share screen feature, so I can have my script open while I input lines without so much back and forth. Or even paste in lines from the clipboard, it won’t honor anything outside the app itself. Not sure it’s worth the trouble of the bugs it has anymore, sadly..Version: 5.1

Great for learning lines, terrible for self tapingI wanted to love this app so badly. And I could really use something like this .. if it actually had decent sound quality. The Sound is horrendous on the self tapes and cannot be used for submitting ... Unless you want to seem totally unprofessional and sound like you clearly pre-recorded your lines; on playback there is a drastic change in sound from the readers lines to yours . I even had a friend record the “reader” lines so it wasn’t my voice .. but the room tone jumps so badly from her lines to mine that it’s unusable, it’s so distracting. Even adjusting the “readers” levels .. doesn’t help. I’m So glad I got the free week, I’d be very upset if I had paid for this app. Sorry guys,, you gotta up the ante if this is gonna be used as a legit option for self tapes w/o a reader present. And I hope you do bc it would be genius if it worked w/o sounding so bad..Version: 3.2

Needs some polishI am based in UK with an English accent and was very excited to purchase this app and what a terrific idea to help the actor. However, whether you use the on voice or on cue mode, there are issues. Sometimes the reader line jumps in even before one has finished saying one’s lines, or one has finished saying ones lines and the reeder hasn’t recognised it and so one is left waiting for the reader line and thus messes up your self tape. I hope the app can be made more sleek soon as it’s too costly otherwise..Version: 4.9

Cuts off lines and sound when recordingWhen I self-taped with this and had a longer sentence of dialogue it would cut me off by coming in with the next line if I took even the slightest pause (it also cuts off your voice when the reader voice you recorded comes in, so you can’t then use that take unless you want to try some ADR). So I separated my sentences into separate lines and tried again but then sometimes it wouldn’t recognise the pause and would wait for me to say another line before coming in with the next reader line. So I tried adding pauses to the script instead (you can choose the pause length) to allow room for me to say my line the speed I needed without being cut off. But when I watched the tape back I realised that if you speak or have any noise during a pause (as well as a speaker line) the sound doesn’t get recorded so there were loads fo gaps in my dialogue. I had to give up after take 15 and called a friend to help me tape over Zoom as it allowed no wiggle room and I was always stressed about when the app was going to cut me off during a minor pause and it affected my performance. This app would be great if it could record the sound of your voice as well as putting in a pause or recorded line and if it recognised speech better so didn’t cut you off too early with the next line. Gutted because I loved the concept and this would have been a game changer for self-tapes! Will look into purchasing again if tweaks are made..Version: 5.1

App good, but confusing to cancelMy daughter used the app to practice for her school play. She liked it quite a bit for that. However, it was not at all intuitive or clear as to how to end the subscription. It ended up that we were paying the monthly fee for several extra months. My fault, but made me very frustrated and caused me to intensely dislike the app. If developers want good reviews, they need to think about the overall user experience. You have to go fairly deep in settings ti cancel the subscription, which took me awhile to figure out. The developer could have included instructions about this within the app itself, if they truly cared about their users’ overall experience. For me, it felt like they were trying to make a few extra dollars off me by making it difficult to cancel the subscription. As a result, I would be reluctant to use this app again..Version: 1.7

Lots of things to fixIncluding how to delete a script.Version: 5.1

Was good until latest updateYou guys just destroyed the majority of your user base with this paywall update. & you’re gonna give the same generic answer as you did the rest of the new reviews but you’ve gone and quite possibly done irrevocable damage to your user count. The competition is about to take you over unless you lower your prices , undo the update or use a micro payment model instead. Should’ve eased into the payment model rather than this. Sincerely, a working actor and, until recently , avid user of your app. On your competition I go...along with everyone else..Version: 3.7.3

Not worth the priceI was an early adopter of this app and although it’s not an amazing app and doesn’t do anything I can’t do other ways, I’d found it really helpful. Now they’ve released an update which essentially makes it a trial-mode app unless you pay for the subscription, disregarding early users. Shame. Poor business practice in my opinion..Version: 3.7.41

Subscription ~ wouldn’t recommend~This app is ok, and since I’m just a middle schooler doing a musical is a little better. I honestly thought this app would be better it was like to rated when I searched it up, but it shouldn’t be. This app only lets you write and 8 individual lines until you have to pay to do more, and I have the main part on my musical so I need a lot more space, but as I said before I’m just a middle schooler who is broke and my parents won’t buy me a subscription. So I would ask if you could give like 30 individual lines before you make us pay. Please and Thank you..Version: 5.1

Great when it worksThe concept of this app is great. I was thrilled to find it. I live alone and do not have anyone available as a script reader during self tapes so this was exactly what I needed. However, no matter how close or far away I am from the device it only picks up the cue word about 30% of the time, which makes it nearly impossible to film a self tape without constantly repeating the cue word to prompt the reader. And if I am filming within the app, the reader is incredibly delayed most of the time. This is very frustrating as someone who has to do this process solo..Version: 4.6

Good but super annoyingI love the idea of this app- it is super useful and I do enjoy it, but the voice recognition is really off most of the time and I find myself yelling for it to understand the “cue” word, and it really interrupts the flow. It is very angering..Version: 5.1

Extremely Finnicky. Massively Disappointing. This app is not nearly as smooth as it claims to be. It’s transcriptions are often way off, there’s no option to just re-record the audio while leaving the text, and the process of correcting lines is mind-numbingly slow. Also it’s missing some incredibly easy to implement quality of life features that would be trivial to implement: let me upload the text of a script and sort it into reader and myself, and, similarly, make it so I can upload voice files that originate somewhere other than my phone (you know, like mp3s/WAV).Version: 5.1

Pricey!!!Think it’s a great app overall, helps me get off script and I can see and hear the lines which are great so rehearsing is easy. Really great for self trapes. Price tho!! £75 for the year is extortion really for an app on a phone. Should be half that price for a year!.Version: 5.1

“Almost” perfect!I’m gonna start with my issue, because everything else is perfect. This app records lines inconsistently. It’s like when you record your lines for the “reader” it cancels out the white noise, but doesn’t do the same for your recording voice. So why is this an issue? Well when you record an audition, you have 2 options, to use the version where it mutes you when the reader reads, snd then unmutes you on your turn again. This provides a VERY clear voice for the reader. However even if you record everything the same way, it feels very unnatural because it cuts out the white noise. So it sounds very edited and take you out of it. But if you do option 2, it doesn’t mute you, but records the speakerphone version of the audio which also sounds terrible.. SIMPLE FIX! It should record audio fir the reader the same way it does for you when you audition. That way when it mutes you, it doesn’t sound so artificial. Pros: everything else. The way you can record both lines of dialogue and just listen on repeat. Or mute one or the other to practice the lines. The multiple options such as voice recognizing the last word to move to the next piece of dialogue. Like this is the best app ever for learning lines. If they fixed the audio for recording it would never be matched by anyone..Version: 3.2

Does Not WorkI had so ouch hope for this app especially after reading some of the raving reviews. Unfortunately, I did not have a positive experience. AFter viewing the tutorial video, which that I you for that BTW, I noticed the app was not working as smoothly as on the video. The worst part...For some reason, the app does not “read back” the other characters’ lines, which I believe is the main purpose of the app. I racked my brain trying to figure out if I needed to turn something on or adjust something on my tablet’s settings but could not find anything. I even reached out directly to the creators of the app. It’s been weeks and have yet to hear a response. I will be deleting the app and cancelling my subscription, which is too bad because I was really hoping ColdRead would work..Version: 3.2

Slightly better, still a disappointmentSince the last update, app mostly records what I say. This is less problematic with monologues, but very problematic with scenes when it screws up cue words. And those cue words, STILL have to be over-enunciated and yelled at my iPad or iPhone. My previous recordings that had vanished are still in the great unknown. Worst of all, the auto loop function that would allow a recording to play endlessly is still gone. Auto looping allowed an actor to use the app while simultaneously doing other things without the need to endlessly highlight the top and press “play” again. I used to be able to exercise, clean the house, garden, drive to rehearsal, etc. while my scene played over and over. PLEASE bring back auto loop endless play..Version: 5.1

Alright appColdRead is an amazing app for helping me learn my lines for my end of year 6 production. Only thing is that if your line is argh or something like that then it doesn’t understand it when you say it in practice mode. Also just found out that you can only rehearse 8 lines which is so annoying so have had to stop using this app!!! 🙄.Version: 3.7.3

This was almost perfectThis is currently the best app for actors to learn lines in my opinion. I’ve used it for a couple projects already. That was, however, until introducing a subscription. Now the free version is virtually useless with its limitations, and with only 8 lines and 2 folders, and as a OG user I’ve found myself not bothering to open the app anymore. And the subscription price itself is not very appealing. If it was a one-off purchase for a “pro” version, I’d absolutely buy it in a heartbeat. This is a great tool for learning lines on the go. But please, lighten the restrictions for the free version. I would also note, it seems to not recognise AirPod or other wireless headphone microphones, so I find myself having to hold my phone up close to my face for it to hear the cue lines, rather than being able to leave the phone and move around..Version: 3.8

Life saver but needs some workEverything about this is wonderful. The only issue which ends up being a big one is when it’s rendered down sometimes you hear other audio playing over the speaker. Whether it was earlier in the audio or from another audition. It’s a Bummer when you think you got the perfect take and then you hear overlapping audio which ruins the whole take! Please find a fix for this! But this app has saved my life plenty of times. I love it.Version: 3.3

Pretty UsefulI use this app a lot, my only complaints 1. There’s a sound that chimes at the end of a recorded scene before it bounces back to the top of the scene. It didn’t use to happen, don’t know why it’s there now but it’s extremely annoying as it can be heard on your taped audition. 2. If a scene begins with a “Reader Line”, it will start back right away at the end of the scene with no time to finish the scene or play a final beat. Very annoying! I typically have to adlib a word at the start so that the scene begins with a “Myself Line” which prevents it from starting again automatically. Can you please fix that? Otherwise it’s a pretty useful app to have if you don’t have a reader..Version: 3.7.3
