FATMAP: Ski, Hike & Trail Maps for Negative User Reviews

New update not as goodMaybe I just don’t know how to use the new update, but in the previous version, it was very simple, you could click on the run and you could see how steep (in degrees) the run was on multiple points of the run. Also, what’s super annoying is that when you tap on one of the light blue runs (that are the unofficial runs), all the other unofficial runs beside it automatically disappear. The last version was just so much more user friendly and enjoyable, you should make some changes if you can cause I used to use this app EVERY day, especially for planning my trips!.Version: 3.7.0

Insanely buggyHave email and apple id confirmation i’m signed up for a premium trial (just to use an offline map) — app even gave pop up saying the route map is downloaded, but shows nothing in my offline maps and prompts signing up for premium when i load the route again. have relaunched the app multiple times. don’t waste your time.Version: 3.26.3

App CrashingThe content of this app looks super promising and I’m excited to use it for route planning. Unfortunately the application keeps crashing in 2-3 seconds upon launch. Hope you guys can get it functioning smoothly....Version: 2.6.2

Doesn’t work anymore.First tried this a while back and it was very promising. Now it won’t load maps and recalling saved backcountry ski trails state “may have been removed from database”..Version: 3.24.25

Horrible business mode that screwed over past usersI was so excited when I first found this app and started using it. It was great. There were some features you could use for free: Downloadable Maps Limited overlays Etc. And there were some features that you could access once you purchased a membership. Until recently, I used this app regularly for scouting my trips into the back country. Then, in the latest major update this company decided that they would require the membership for most of the previously free features like overlays and downloadable maps. It’s absolutely disgusting when companies offer some features for free for a long time and then all the sudden decide to make those features paid features. I was going to buy the membership until they pulled this horrible business decision to screw over it’s past users..Version: 2.25.1

Strava and fat mapsI have not been able to use fat maps recently as I am blocked out by it constantly trying to redirect me to strava and then trying to get me to open a strava account, yet I have a valid Fat Map account. My account runs out at the end of the month and I will not be renewing, going back to outdoor active.Version: 3.26.8

Continuously has to renew purchaseThe app is phenomenal, but every single time I open it I have to renew my purchase. It has become extremely frustrating, multiple times mid-download of an offline map the download has cancelled because the app wants me to hit a button to renew my purchase….Version: 3.24.20

Loved it but now doesn’t show the ski touring routes it used toGot this app, saw it had a ton of detail on ski touring routes near me (front range Colorado), loved it and got the membership. Now when I go to the area that used to have all those routes and choose ski touring (berthoud pass) it says there aren’t any routes. Don’t know if it’s a bug or what but it’s incredibly annoying compared to how it was..Version: 3.17.1

Missing Basic FeaturesThe quality and detail of the maps is top notch, but the app is missing a number of features that are standard in most other mapping apps: customisable waypoints, offline routing, and viewable tracks. Over all I wouldn’t recommend..Version: 3.26.11

Beware of (intentional) sneaky subscription sign upI was prepared to go through several menus when setting it up for a trial but quite quickly it became apparent I had signed up for a yearly subscription before I’d even used it. Lots of backtracking for a cancellation trail finally stopped it, although my Apple account still shows it as open. App deleted. You have been warned..Version: 3.21.7

Oh god it’s frustrating to useEvery single accidental touch opens something or zooms to another location. Terrible UX.Version: 3.23.2

Good potentialVery comprehensive maps. However a few things are not working properly. To download a map, you have to actually stay on the Offline maps/download section. If you navigate somewhere else, either IPhone or app, it's stop downloading. One last thing, I went on a big ski tour yesterday while I tracked everything. On the skin up, the tracking worked fine. On the ski down, about halfway, it stopped recording my precise location, and drew a long straight line all the way back to the sled. It's hard to trust this app anymore....Version: 3.23.2

Would be great if it workedIt just simply doesn’t work. Constantly freezes and I just can’t get anything done on here.Version: 3.24.16

Cannot sign inI cannot give this app more than one star because I could never sign-in. I tried several angles, email, apple ID, nothing. Just an endless loop, each time delivering me back to the verification of my email page. And every time I gave my email, it bounced right back to the same request, without ever opening the app..Version: 3.20.2

Good start but needs route discoveryI use Gaia Maps and Maplets (and Google Maps)- all these apps serve a distinct purpose. Unfortunately, this app does deserve the phone memory. On an iPhone SE the UI is a little choppy. This app is like Google Earth, it doesn’t really add any value beyond that for me. And being old fashioned, 2D topo maps are just fine to use when exploring outside. So what does this app need? I could see something like this being popular once AR is more widespread, but what it’s missing is everything else needed in backcountry navigation like layer support, trail names, route tracking, the ability the effortlessly find new trails..Version: 2.7.1

App is stuck on Choose your “favourite” activities screenConnected to my Strava account. Went thru the steps until the Choose your favourite activities screen…can’t advance past this screen. Restarted phone, deleted & redownloaded app but same behavior each time. Maybe needs an update?.Version: 3.25.3

Uhm, can’t subscribeI’d sign up to test for a month but I can’t. When I select “subscribe”, pop up shows me middle of page and I can’t scroll up or down to go thru sign up process. You don’t give me much confidence that this will work when I’m deep on a trail and need to figure out my way..Version: 2.9.1

Won’t run without account, instant uninstallThere is a seemingly new (and disturbing) philosophy amongst app developers where the app won’t even finish loading unless you create an account. Now granted, though this app allows the use of Sign In with Apple ID, no, I do NOT want to create an account, or give you ANY information about me, until I’ve at least had the opportunity to evaluate your product to determine if it’s what I require! Stop forcing people to hand over ANY information before they’ve even had a chance to look at what you have to offer, especially since you have a rather expensive subscription attached which I’m guessing you need if you want to do anything other than the basics in the app; this was an instant uninstall for me. I’ve had enough of this Orwellian push towards siphoning as much user information as possible, and I now make it clear with 1-star reviews..Version: 3.24.21

No landscape viewI absolutely love the desktop version of FATMAP, so this review is specifically for the app and not the product. The lack of the ability to tilt your phone and view the map in landscape mode is absolutely backbreaking. I love mirroring my phone to my TV and looking at map apps that way when planning a tour (I do this a lot with CalTopo), and I can’t do that with this app. I’d probably pay for premium if there was a landscape view..Version: 3.21.12

Offline maps do not work !App is great for planning but offline maps didn’t work and I’m glad I had other ways of route finding otherwise I’d still be lost in the mountains..Version: 3.24.20

App broke recentlyI love this app, but something happened recently and the app is completely broken. Map just doesn't load at all :( tried restarting my phone and updating the app and everything.Version: 3.26.1

I used to love this app and previously rated it 5 starsThis app is now useless unless you pay for the premium membership. You can no longer use the app if you’re offline. You can no longer use any of the features like elevation, aspect, gradient etc. I can’t believe they removed all of the features that would naturally bring people in to paying for the premium. Time to delete it I suppose....Version: 2.24.1

So much bugsDeveloper managing this app needs to be fired. App is terribly buggy and won't let me delete my account. Signup had a continue button that kept disappearing on the birthdate section so I spent 5 minutes trying to get fully signed up..Version: 3.26.7

MehLove the maps and 3D features but planning routes is clunky and complicated. Cant even measure a distance without being “online” / in service. Even when i have the maps downloaded to my phone. Thats my biggest gripe and its caused me to switch to a different map system..Version: 3.26.7

Doesn’t work offlineThis app is trash. Software and mapping is great, but takes up nearly a gig of space downloading an offline map and it doesn’t load the topo when you pull it up. FATMAP is better used on a computer and cross referenced with Gaia GPS or another better offline application. Very disappointed. I’ve now tried to use this on two canyoneering trips in southern Utah, a backcountry ski tour in the wasatch and a 3 day raft trip in Idaho. Worthless. I want my $30 back..Version: 3.19.7

No offline topo maps!I was wondering why my offline maps were a jumbled mess of various layers. The App Store description makes no mention of the fact that you cannot download topo maps such as Ordnance Survey for offline use. I happened to stumble across this information on the Fatmap help desk. There is no option to deactivate the ‘snap to’ feature when planning a route, thus making it impossible to plan the route you actually want. To add to the frustration, there is no option to import a GPX file from other apps as Fatmap does not appear in the list when exporting/ sharing from the other app. Would be good to be able to exaggerate the heights as the map can look flat even though there are some killer mountain bike climbs. Three various discovery options eating up screen real estate, when one would suffice. However the app has potential and the 3d aerial view is amazing..Version: 3.24.1

Pointless battery drainerSkiing for a week and tried to give Fatmap a go with the free 7 day trial. Other than it being the main battery draining app, it was a bit pointless. The old maprika app is better for on the slopes. Relive does better 3d videos (that has better export options)..Version: 3.24.34

Stop blowing up our local stashes. It’s a cool app, but it takes the romance and barriers out of back/side country skiing. The pursuit of powder is meant to be challenging, that’s half the fun of it. The challenges of finding lines and good ski terrain help filter out those that might not have the skill set and awareness to ride these areas. Especially in this day and age where every other bro has a touring setup..Version: 3.13.0

Looks nice but not enough routes so far.I opened this to look for walks near me in the UK. It looks great and I love the map but there were no walks logged for the South Downs National Park or around London which is crazy. So not much good until it gets updated further but it’s early days I guess so I’ll check back in some months and maybe they’ll have updated it..Version: 2.6.2

Flash over substanceGave this app (and others) a chance for one year before canceling. It neglects basic functionality in exchange for 3D animations that serve no purpose other than to show you that the programmers figured out how to display a 3D map eye candy, which they impose upon the user at nearly every click so that you lose the display you’re working with. Perhaps useful for recording activities to share 3D maps with your friends or strava… but not really for navigation..Version: 3.24.27

ChargesNot sure why I am being charged twice for the app, one is 39.99 per year and he other 14.99monthly without any explanation of charges. Time to remove this app.Version: 3.26.8

App StuckApp continues to get stuck on “personalizing” so not able to use it unfortunately.Version: 3.24.26

Maps don’t download and app freezesI paid for the subscription so I could download maps for out of service use. The maps won’t download which makes the app useless. Also freezes when trying to access certain options..Version: 3.25.1

A step in the right directionOverall I find it useful for backcountry skiing, but it’s missing a couple features that will prevent me from renewing. 1. You can only import a gpx route from a computer, and not directly into the app from you iPhone. 2 Downloading offline maps is problematic. It’s slow to start( if at all), and takes forever..Version: 3.24.8

Can’t see the point of FatmapI don't get the chance to go to the mountains very often, so I was looking to see if this would help elsewhere, but can’t see what it offers over and above 3D views. It’s a nice party trick but what if your not in the mountains. I can get quality topographic maps in Outdoor Active, as well as a host of other useful tools. So unless someone can convince me otherwise it’s goodbye Fatmap.Version: 3.26.6

Great app, poor membership usabilityLove the app, best one going for back country Hunting and adventures! Unfortunately the last 3 months every time I open the app it makes me restore my explore membership, so if I’m out of service trying to access my downloaded maps it won’t allow me to. Last year I used this app on our fly in sheep hunt and told everyone that would listen how great it is, now after 3 months of waiting for a fix from fat maps I’m not so sold on renewing my membership...Version: 3.24.20

Some easy fixes would helpI use it to orient myself to new ski areas before I arrive or maybe after a day or two, and it can be great for that. One huge annoyance: when you press a ski run to see its name and get info, the entire view reorients itself - I guess so you can see the entire run from an angle the developers like. Super annoying to have to re-orient the map manually each time I highlight a run. Makes me afraid to highlight a run at all Please fix this!.Version: 2.13.0

Was expecting moreWhen I import a GPX file, it only saves the track not the individual waypoints. Which is useless to me when I create a file with different way points and tracks it should all save in the app..Version: 3.24.27

New update not workingI’ve loved this app / map and have been using all season long-however today’s update isn’t allowing me to look at maps in the US. It keeps saying “we detected a problem in your last session, the map has been moved to a safe location”. Super frustrating as I’m trying to find runs..Version: 2.17.0

Very promising, but difficult to download offline mapsWhat I have seen looks very good, but I couldn’t use it in anger because I couldn’t get maps to download properly. Signed up for premium, so I could get offline maps, but ended up cancelling because of the download experience. Admittedly, my internet connection was poor, but that’s the reality of being in the mountains, even with wifi. You guys need to have bullet proof map downloads that will keep trying until it succeeds, including restarting partial download, or other tricks that work with poor connections and low download rates..Version: 3.24.21

AlmostI got this as a free trial and was already using another mapping app for my trail runs. I was really impressed and planned on paying the £30 for the year, everything seemed much better than other apps I use. And then I went to plan a route, there is no way to do this on the app. I don't own a computer and the site does not let you do this on a mobile or tablet, major fail. I really wonder how an app can be so behind the times, I've used 3 other apps that are free and all have this ability..Version: 3.19.9

Really wanted to try this appI’m an avid Strava user and really wanted to use this app. Unfortunately it would not load properly. During the setup process, as soon as I got to the section in activity preferences, it simply stalled and would not allow me to continue. I tried restarting the app, rebooting my phone…and uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Every time it got stuck at entering preferences. I use a second generation IPHONE SE with the newest IOS. May not be compatible with older models.Version: 3.24.35

Gorgeous Piece Of JunkCould potentially be great. Not sure where they get their info, but only 4 mountain biking trials within 100km??? Went to a popular area and says “looks like an area our local experts haven’t covered”........ ugh😕 So many basic sensible things missing. Incomplete garbage.Version: 2.6.2

Good for planning new routes. Bad for managing old onesThe best tools and visuals for planning ski touring routes. It’s frustrating that the platform is designed around promoting other people’s routes. I would like the option to see all my routes and adventures on the map at the same time. Why are the full routes not shown in the guidebook map view? Great work! Keep it up.Version: 3.24.17

AverageDisappointed. Just hiked two well known trails in Olympic National Park that aren’t even in the database. One would think the national parks would be in here at least. Was so looking forward to using this app since I use Strava but maybe not. Features (except that the screen spins when you zoom in with your fingers, frustrating) are cool but trails are limited..Version: 3.26.3

Current version crashes on iPadGreat app usually, though I don’t really get enough value from it to want to pay the subscription prices now, but I guess they need to make money to run everything somehow. The current iPad version crashes as soon as you try to load a map. I cannot find a way to report this problem on the FATMAP support website..Version: 3.11.0
