The Official MTA App for Negative User Reviews

Bring back SubwayTimeThis is a garbage app. It takes forever to find what you are looking for, and even after you do, the data is probably wrong. For instance, today I wanted to check to see when the next train was coming into my local station. After I finally find it, I realize that it is displaying information for a completely different station. Super helpful. SubwayTime was incredible because it was simple and easy to use. It was about as close to perfection as the MTA will ever achieve. So, of course, they pulled the plug on it..Version: 0.9.43

Very frustratingThere needs to be a way to only show routes for trains. It is so frustrating when you are trying to go somewhere that should be a 20 minute Manhattan train ride and all the app shows you is an hour long bus route with 2 transfers you can take. Who in their right mind would do that? Also, why would it ever make sense to get on the SIR, then get off at a stop just to take a bus to the ferry when the train goes straight to the ferry. Not only do the bus routes add unnecessary time to your traveling, but it is also less environmentally friendly..Version: 0.9.47

Add back the PDF subway map for underground useFrequent user of the app and appreciate the updates. Previous versions had a pdf of the subway map which was extremely helpful when underground with no service. It was removed. Now when attempting refer to the map it won’t load as it needs a signal (cell/wifi). Add back the subway map for offline viewing..Version: 0.9.43

UnderpoweredOutdated and insignificant app meant to represent the largest transit system in the United States. No home button (which every transit and travel app should have, regardless of how dumbly minimalist the designers claim it is. If you are using a smartphone, you are not a minimalist). Inaccurate arrival times. Inability to leave feedback about the app itself. Requires location for bus times. As if that matters? If you are taking the bus you know the lines. Certainly better than nothing, but barely average. They developers need subway riders working for them..Version: 1.26.16

Usually IncorrectIf this app tells you there’s a bus 4 minutes away, that bus might not even exist. If the app shows you a map with a bus a block away from you, there’s a good shot that bus doesn’t exist. If you can see a bus in the distance and try to use the app to see which bus it is, you’re much better off closing the app and waiting until the bus is close enough for you to read what line it is. The only thing this app is consistently good for is showing you half of a bus route. It can do that pretty well..Version: 1.25.2

If you like being human cattle, you will loveThe MTA. If you ever want to feel like a hog being slapped with a stick on your rear end to get in the pen with the other piggies then the MTA is your ticket. Do you like strangers breathing directly onto your face in a crowded subway with no pole to hold? MTA! Do you hate basic human dignity? MTA! Do you like the smell of urine and beggars hounding you the moment you open your eyes in the morning? MTA! Did you ever want to take a hot, hour long bus ride with no leg room? MTA! Do you love paying a lot of money for terrible service but you can’t drive because the roads in New York are the most congested in the world? You got no other choice in NYC. MTA is it babyy startt spreadin the newsss I’m leavin toddayyy.Version: 1.26.16

All looks no substanceRecently, I’ve been looking for an app that does it all. I have one for the bus, one for the train and one for the subway, and it makes no sense that everything is separate at least to me someone who thrives on efficiency, so when I found out this app existed. I was happy after I downloaded it I was slightly angry again. It looks the part. It looks like it’s supposed to function, and it runs efficiently and everything looks like it was made recently, but it’s not even allowing me to save bus routes. That’s within walking distance of me, which makes no sense so for now a one out of five I wish I could give it a zero..Version: 1.26.16

Needs workThis app has so much potential but some very basic functionality needs to be worked on asap. First, it only shows 3 routes - there are often several additional routes one could take. Why can’t it list them all? Secondly why can’t I save a location rather than a trip? I always want to go “home” but from varying places - I should be able to save the destination. Thirdly when you search for an address WHYYYY doesn’t it default to an address in the 5 boroughs? I am not trying to get to Alpharetta Georgia using the MTA. Come on. It’s so frustrating..Version: 0.9.45

Different subway times than websiteI like the app, it’s simple fast and great for favorites. But the times it shows are not as accurate as the website which is pretty infuriating. Namely it seems to be missing trains that are about to arrive or are arriving, and instead only shows those arriving a bit further out like 3+ minutes. As a result I always end up checking the website to see which train is arriving..Version: 1.26.11

Not accurate enoughI have to go to school every morning, and i rely on the bus app. sometimes i check the time, and it’s 3 minutes away. i wait for more than 3 minutes and check again and it says “3 minutes away”. also sometimes when it says “arriving” on the app, i find it’s already arrived and gone. at least the bus drivers are usually pretty nice😊. POWER TO THE PEOPLE! FIX THE BUS APP! I WANT TO GET TO SCHOOL ON TIME! - a concerned and dedicated bus citizen😌.Version: 0.9.49

I Really Can’t Stand This AppMost of the time all I want to do is look up what time the next bus is coming, but even figuring out how to do so is too involved. The previous app, “Bus Time” allowed you to quickly look up a bus route and it automatically saved the routes you previously looked for. However this app does not. Even if I save a route, I do not see it listed anywhere and apparently it was all a waste of time. For something like this, all you really want is quick and simple access - especially during extreme temperatures or stormy conditions, but that isn’t what this app provides. 👎.Version: 0.9.36

Terrible appI’m late every day! The Q54 is by far the worst route in NYC. I asked the DRIVER if the time on the app reflects the time the bus gets here. His comment “ I do t go by that I go by this “ and shows me a schedule written on a frigging index card! So what that tells me is this; 1 tax payer money being utilized for a technology that is not being used properly. 2) The MTA cares less about your time and more about their money. I done understand how 6 buses can pass by and all are out of service. This is frustrating. I have to leave an hour earlier for a 40 min ride that ends up being 1 and 40 min. Terrible..Version: 0.9.39

Befitting App for Troubled Transit AuthorityMuch like the MTA itself, the MyMTA app is poorly kept. The overall app interface is fine - it could be much better - but the information on it is often wrong or not up to date. I only use it for subways and the “planned work” or “delay” updates are wrong half of the time; that goes up to about 90% on the weekends. Often, I will wait for an M train that the app claims to be “8 min” away and find out the M train is, in fact, not running at all. Long story short, double-check with station employees as the app is often wrong. MTA: please get it together..Version: 0.9.39

HorribleThe MTA is already a nightmare and knows that New Yorkers rely on them despite of the horrible service. This app is NEVER accurate, it constantly freezes, does not update regularly and probably never gets maintenance. Do NOT rely on the times that you see in this app to take a train or a bus. This is just a feel good app that fools you into feeling better when you see “2 mins” when in reality the train already arrived and you missed it because you relied on the information in this app. Your best bet is to leave your house early enough to wing it with these stupid trains and buses..Version: 0.9.43

Man, what is this ?!This apps needs to start all over from scratch because HOLY CRAP ! Why does it take so long for the app to start up and much of the time, the times take another century to load. By that time you already left the station and possibly add more time to your trip. And what I don't get it is why some stations load WAY faster (like in an instant) than others or why they never load up at all. BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE ! You wanna check when the train makes it to the station…guess you gotta close the app 10 millions times just for nothing to show up again! Man, what is this ?!.Version: 0.9.49

Awful, inaccurate, on brandLike everything else the MTA has, this app is absolutely terrible and the “planned trip” is useless. I am a commuter who needs to be at work at the same time everyday and there is not a single day that I use this app that it gives me the correct time of arrival for my destination or even for a train. This app has caused me to be late to work several times. I have even left 15 minutes before it says I need to leave and by the time I get to the station, the app updates my ETA for 15 minutes later than they said. So awful..Version: 0.9.39

Helpful but needs improvementI like this app and have relied upon it since it’s inception. I use it multiple times a day, nearly every day. But I’m quite frustrated with the app’s accuracy on train/bus times. The app indicates a train or bus is coming and gets it completed wrong. The gps (or whatever locating tech they’re using) needs to improve. And, the refresh rate needs to improve as well. If I have full cellular and WiFi working, the app should be able to refresh with up to date information. Yet, I often get blank screens that I have to fully quit, often multiple times, before the data refreshes..Version: 1.25.1

Used to be Good!It used to be such a good App! When it told train trains and buses were gonna arrive they did at the exact time! I take the A train to early morning from 111st… It had 2 trains departing at 9:13-14 and 9:20AM I could take either or… Tell me why out of sudden the 9:13 train started departing at 9:18AM and no 9:20AM and when I arrived the train was already gone WITH THE APP STILL SHOWING THE TRAIN AT 9:20AM and today it shows 9:18AM (finally) THE TRAIN DEPARTED AT 9:22AM… Again, no previous note, showing Normal Service! You gotta put it together because people depend on these trains… A min late to wherever you are going; work, medical appointments, any type of appointments whatsoever and it’s over! Now it is just an App it does not control trains and buses but it needs to keep users more updated about what’s going on….Version: 0.9.49

Data sometimes wrong, not intuitive to navigateThe subway part of the app is simple to use but the data is sometimes wrong, not in sync with the countdown clocks in the station. I’ve had many times where I refresh the app and see the last sync time stamp is current, see that my train is 5 min away and the train is already in the station with the count down click saying 0 min. Secondly when using the Rail part of the app it is not at all intuitive. Clicking on a “station” does not tell you how to get there. It gives you arrival times in both directions. But instead of using “arrival” or “departure” everything is in reference to Manhattan. So if you wanted to go to croton Harmon and you were in Yonkers you’d need to look for “outbound from Manhattan”. The destination of the train is nowhere to be seen. It would be better if the label were “to croton Harmon”.Version: 0.9.45

I want the old app backThis app is trying to be too much! The old app that just tracked train times was much more user friendly and more consistent. This app is way less user friendly - for the subway stops that share with the shuttle it shows up as the same train so you really have to pay attention instead of it showing as a different train. If someone is not as familiar with the destination of the train, you will be confused. It also switches the downtown and uptown depending on the station. For my station in Brooklyn it’s downtown on top and then uptown on bottom, while other stations are reverse. That can cause a lot of confusion since it’s so inconsistent and it really should be uniform throughout the app. I want the old app to be supported again! Much better usage and got the job done.Version: 0.9.35

Limited functionalityThe app is fine but a bit limited. Need an option to share trips with family and friends. This would be especially helpful for parents who are trying to help there young teens navigate the subway while giving their some freedom. Parents would have some peace of mind with the ability to guide their kids from afar by sharing alternative routes when there are service disruptions..Version: 0.9.45

No offline maps, just like it's 1990 againSeriously, how naive is to create an app that doesn't have the option of displaying a subway map without an internet connection? It's not as if the NYC subways have internet access when you’re in the tunnels, and even of they did, an offline map would load quicker. I don’t expect those responsible for this app to read this and I definitely don’t think they would respond if they did, and I’m certain they won’t fix this issue. The MTA doesn’t really care about you, and that shows in the subways and it shows in the app..Version: 0.9.45

GlitchesI rely on this application now to get around NYC and am running into settings glitches. When you save a destination and click on the top right “customize” go to travel preferences I set it to show me ONLY subway. Not bus, express bus or rail. I save my settings. When I reopen the app the next time I need to use it, all my settings are gone and it’s reset to show all 4 methods of travel. Please fix. This app should also know where I am on a map and show me the best route using my current location. I am going into Greenpoint Brooklyn right now and it says to take the M train to the B62 bus. I’m already on the G train and my destination is 2 stops away! This app needs to be smarter..Version: 0.9.39

Glitchy and not instinctualLike most New Yorkers I have 8 cars—the E train 🥁. Please, MTA, the largest subway system in the USA, the most stations in the world: Fix the MyMTA app! Couldn’t get trip planning in app today, had to switch to your website. Deleted app, reinstalled, still not working. In App Store your last update to fix bugs shows as one month ago. Not often enough. When the app works, it’s helpful especially being able to have favorite rides in the app..Version: 1.26.3

SubwayTime was WAY BETTER!!!!!I never write reviews, but this app just pisses me off, it counteracts what it is intended to be. I used to use SubwayTime and it was super accurate. just a couple weeks ago you stopped supporting it, and shut it down, forcing us to use this garbage of an app.. it tells you the train is coming in 2 minutes, but then you go and it turns out the train is already gone and you have to wait 15 minutes for the next one... MAKE IT MORE ACCURATE!!!!!!... So that it works the way it is intended to... I will update the stars if you fix this stupid issue. Thanks.Version: 0.9.35

Poor interface, doesn’t do basicsAt the end of the day you want an app that will tell you when the next train is coming quickly and simply, this fails on both counts. You have to click through several fields to get to train times and then your choices are limited by your location, which is unreliable. Almost impossible to pick a station up or down the line from where you are to figure out a transfer. And the display of times is only half screen meaning you have to enlarge and scroll to see downtown arrivals half the time. As usual the MTA is trying to be too clever and satisfied no one. I miss the Subway Time app—at least it was straightforward..Version: 0.9.35

Still garbageOne year later, for buses, this is still useless garbage with wrong info. It does not show the downtown 104 stop at Broadway between 63 and 64. The 104 bus I just got did not show on the app. And that stop should be combined with the downtown 7 stop two feet away. In all other respects it is difficult to use. Jumps around like crazy and the stop bubble descriptions don’t even say uptown or downtown so I waste time looking at four bubbles to find where I am standing. The previous app was ok. MTA should sue this vendor and go back to the old bus-only app..Version: 0.9.45

Several New GlitchesRecently an update resulted in icons not showing up for favorite lines so you can’t tell which lines have issues until you click on them. Also all the favorites stations and stops have disappeared, requiring navigation to the “stations near me” option, meaning location services are required. All of this makes the app far slower to use and less functional in general. Two updates have come since then and not fixed this issue, nor has deleting and redownloading the app. I miss the old subway time app!.Version: 0.9.41

Mostly terrible but a necessary evil for service changesThe app is terribly designed, full of bugs, and an awful overall UX experience. Unfortunately it’s also the only place where you can get semi-reliable info about service changes. It’s still wrong a lot and almost useless but the info they supply to Google and Apple is (intentionally?) incomplete and out of date. Not only is the UX/UI terrible but the app frequently freezes during various functions and has to be force quit. This has been the case for years with little improvement. It also doesn’t auto fill any of the fields or remember your home address even though it requires you provide this info when signing up. Submitting feedback requires re entering all of your info each time and will block the submission of there are any typos. There is no ability to change many of the defaults (e.g. it always displays “fewest transfers” first even though almost all people would prioritize “fastest” or “least walking” over that. Bottom line: it’s a terribly outdated app that works very poorly and has never been improved. But it has a captive audience due to the even poorer info they give to the alternative apps..Version: 1.26.16

1 minute to bus? (Error)Generally i think the app is ok. Not cutting edge However there is a glitch summer 2023 that needs fixing. If it says the bus is coming in 1 minute, then it seems to be stuck. You will be able to see the buses at other locations moving but your stop will be frozen at 1 minute. In this case if u r at the bus stop you can use the text feature posted on the schedule and get a better result..Version: 1.26.3

Constantly crashingConstantly crashing - it won’t even work on my phone..Version: 0.9.10

Last update ruined the appUp until this past weekend, the app worked perfectly for me, to tell at a glance when the next few trains would reach a given station. I used it multiple times a day to decide which line to take, or so I would know to hustle if my train was arriving in the next few minutes. Now the app has no functionality for me. I’m a big believer that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but this “improvement” has completely destroyed something that was working just fine..Version: 0.9.47

Not for NYersThis is really designed for tourists who have no idea what the subway is... that said, the interface is also just as confusing as train service on a weekend. So, good luck tourists!! Too many links that require you to go to a website and take you off the app. Why go on the app if I need to leave it? No easy way to quickly see when the next train is coming for a specific line/stop without going through a much of clicks, or unless you favorite every possible subway line you’ll ever take, at which point, what’s the point in favoriting? And it’s weird... this app seems to do everything except what people want it to do. Tell us which trains are arriving when and how about to get there. Yes, you can do that... but it takes so many steps. Save yourself the download space and don’t get this..Version: 0.9.35

Terrible AppThis app lets you save bus lines and specific stops as “favorites” — but saving them as favorites doesn’t benefit you in any way. You cannot use those favorites to quickly jump to that bus line or bus stop; rather, if you want to see how long it will be before the next bus arrives, you have to manually look up that bus line in the app, so saving it as a favorite accomplished nothing. If I ride certain buses on a regular basis, the app should offer a way to save those bus lines so that I don’t have to manually look them up by route number each time; unfortunately the favorites feature doesn’t do that. The way the arrival times and bus locations are displayed are confusing as well..Version: 0.9.48

NOT all in oneSays it’s an All-in-one app but doesn’t let you buy tickets. Which is the most important thing to be able to do. Stupid..Version: 0.9.35

Currently unusableSince the last update, saved trips frequently come up as completely different routes (different and unrelated starting and ending locations), and trying multiple times does not cause them to refresh. Previously, there was only trouble getting it to load current departures/arrivals (under conditions that allow other apps to load just fine), but now it’s worse than useless. I’m still holding out for a fix for a little while, because in theory it would be a very useful app..Version: 1.26.16

Bad app, cluttered and inefficientAnd on top of that, it’s been broken for weeks. People generally need info about buses more than they need to know when the next train is coming. And now you cannot get ANY information about specific stops. You can bring up a bus route and see where buses are, but if you want to see complete info about a stop used by several lines, or get arrival times for the next 2 or 3 buses, clucking on that stop should show you what’s coming. Now you see nothing at all. Say you are at 23rd St. and 3rd Ave. You have made the M102 one of your Favorites. You click on that line, click on direction of travel, and you see where buses are on the route. If you then click on the 23rd St. stop, you should see times for several M102s, as well as wait times for the M103 and M101. You now see nothing whatsoever. The old MTA BusTime app was infinitely better. But it has been crippled so that it only works in Nearby mode. Now to get the functionality of the old BusTime app, you have to use the horrid myMTA app for a limited overview, and then you can switch to the old app when you are close enough to the stop for which you need information. Just restore theBusTime app already and stop torturing regular riders with this hot mess of an all-in-one app..Version: 0.9.39

Not thinking about the userWhile the app gives you the basic real time arrival, the problems start when you start looking at the details. Suppose you’re looking at a train arrival at your station and the prompt tells you it’s arriving at 1:25, 7 minutes away. If you tap on the more arrow, it gives you a timetable that resembles closest the similar recent time in the subway line, which has nothing to do with the next train coming up. For example if you’re at the 75 avenue stop and your next train arrives at 1:22, when you tap on the details you get a train timetable on midtown that has the train stopping at 1:22 in midtown. Not only useless but misleading. If they can’t get the actual timetable for the train you’re checking in on, how about the distance by minutes to each station. They’ve had this willful bad experience since launch. Also, how about clear entry points from the street? Google Maps and exit strategy had this many years ago.Version: 1.26.3
