BaseMap: Hunting GPS Maps for Negative User Reviews

Positives and NegativesI like that one subscription gets you access to layers in all states. Compared to that other hunting maps app this is convenient. Some layers are really useful and only available in this app, not in the competitor's app. It is easier to draw overlays in this app. The map view occasionally crashes, does not display with correct layers selected/deselected. Force quitting and restarting gets it working again. Some layers are displaying far less detail than the competitor. Notably, POI has way less detail than recreation sites in that other maps app. Lastly, I realized the app was tracking my location when no tracks were being recorded and cannot find any option to purge this data. Overall I will probably only renew pro sub when the relevant layers are useful for a particular trip..Version: 3.4.3

Do not spend any money on this AppIf you are from up North Canada... do not spend a dime on this app! It does not work well. The offline maps are not accurate. The graphics are horrible in Offline mode. I made the mistake of buying the whole package. I’m now stuck with the bill! At least I can delete the app from my phone!.Version: 4.1.4

Great app not for Canada yetLike the app a lot, only downfall is the lack of Canadian inclusion in all of the features mainly the hunting portion. Satellite views are nice but dated for Canada. Buildings that are removed still show on rural properties..Version: 4.1.1

Would be 5 starsThe app is great and everything I would want In a hunting app. The fact that it has google maps and google earth is awesome. Before I used to switch back and forth from onX and google earth but now I have it all in one. Being able to buy the whole country for $30/ year is super sweet too. Everything is awesome except for one fatal flaw; when you’re moving around on the map interface it miss clicks on pieces of property and a page pops up with the land data and property owner info. This wouldn’t be too big of an issue by itself but a second page pops up behind the first that is an advertisement to upgrade to another of BaseMaps services. So when you’re moving around the map scouting out an area or property, the miss click will happen and then you have to exit out of the first land data pop up and then exit the second advertisement pop up to get back to the map. This will keep happening every 10-15 seconds, just enough to make you go nuts. If there was a way to get rid of the upgrade advertisement and maybe a double tap for the land data then the app would be a lot better in my opinion. That being said, I probably won’t switch back to onX because of this. It is really annoying and that’s why I can’t give it 5 stars right now. If you’re on the fence about the app I would recommend giving it a try..Version: 3.4.3

Great Online. Below Average OfflinePrior to the hunt I researched the layers, downloaded ~15 high detailed sections encompassing the whole unit. When I had service - the app was great. I could see my buddy who also had the app, I could see trail names, topography, place markers, add/remove layers, unit boundaries, set my bearing and measure distance to different geological items on the map etc. The issue comes when I didn't have service. At that point I would lose at least one if not all the following things sporadically - the detail would drop to low, most of the trail names would be gone, the ability to add/remove layers unit boundaries, saving point was slow if it worked at all and at points id even lost all app functionality. This was in offline mode when it should of been using all the data I downloaded. When you have cell/data service BaseMap is far better than OnX but we need these apps for when we don't have service. One would think that if I spent the time to download in high detail the whole unit...I would have all that data and the applied layers available to me offline...but that was not the case. Online - BaseMap is far superior Offline - OnX is superior.Version: 5.2.9

Horribly out of dateThis app has information that is more than two years out of date. I purchased two pieces of land next to mine. I waited six months and the information have not updated. I reached out to BaseMap and they told me they had to wait for an update from the County. The county information was updated one week after the purchase. A competitors app had updated approximately two months after the purchase. I waited another six months and contacted BaseMap and they advised that their information was current. it has now been more than two years since I purchased the land next to mine and BaseMap still shows the previous owners information. This app is useful for knowing where property lines are but useless when it comes to landowner information.Version: 5.2.8

No Love for CanadaLooks like a pretty solid app if you live in the US.... most of the map layers and features don’t work for Canada though.... GAIA it is.....Version: 2.0.22

UnreliableThe 3D mode is cool and the layers are pretty detailed, however the information such as property ownership and physical location are not always accurate. The property ownership hasn’t been updated in over a year and when hiking I find I have to switch to other map apps to get things to load even with the downloaded offline maps. I would not recommend this app for serious hikers or hunters. Definitely wouldn’t recommend the hunt subscription either it gives no useful data for where I am at in the Southwest. This app had a promising start, but over the year I have had it there has not been enough development on the app to make it worth another year for what you get..Version: 3.1.6

Progressively loosing more and more free features.I’ve used BaseMap for about 3 years now. When I first downloaded the app, there were so many free features! Over the past 3 years, I have seen several of those free features disappear all together or move to the paid subscription category. I have kept the app this long because one feature, that has continued to be free up until today, was the private land ownership option. With this feature now only being available In the paid subscription version, I think I will have to delete this app all together. The “free” version of this app is just like all the others now. Why use this app, when google or other apps can offer more features and don’t want to charge you for those features? I don’t know who’s running things over there now, but you guys need to get rid of him and reevaluate your business model..Version: 5.2.9

Features don’t workThe app works great as long as your on WiFi, not so good when your in the wild! It’s really neat that BaseMap does a gear drop give away, however it is not neat to exclude a lot of people from receiving ALL the hints. Not everybody is a social media weeny! When gear drop first started, all the hints were available on the app. Not to mention the hints are absolutely ridiculous! Hint-it’s somewhere in the state? Come on!? I get paying for the pro version to get the hint, it is one reason why I bought a subscription. Now you have my $ and you’ve taken away this feature as well as other features of the app (the standings, etc)? I hate it when companies build up a good thing then start cheating their customers! Why pay for a subscription when I can’t access ALL the features of an app? I know it doesn’t mean much coming from just one person but I will not be renewing my subscription!.Version: 4.1.10

Update required will screw youPeriodically apps require updates. I get that. This app will not let you use the app if a new version is available. I was up hunting, came back to town to gas up and headed back out. The little bit of service I got in town was enough to have a mandatory update but I didn’t have enough service to download the new version. I couldn’t even access my downloaded maps. This has happened several times now. Other features in the app are good. I suppose if you hunt where you have WiFi the app would be good. I will not be renewing this app..Version: 4.1.10

Good appI used Onxhunt for about 3 years before switching to BaseMap. I find that base map has a few more updates however there are several properties I hunt on that are not correct on the map especially if a portion of ground is split and sold. Some of these properties have been like this for over a year. I love the app I just wish it was tied to local GIS maps and properties owners. I find the local Indiana county gis maps are accurate within a month of a property changes hands. Beacon gis and local counties gis maps is what I have to verify with unfortunately..Version: 5.0.2

Not reliable in the field! When it works it is nice but very slow (running on a iPhone X so not the phone, it’s the software). Frequently didn’t show public land on my last hunting trip. If you hard quit it would sometimes come back. When it did display land status it was VERY slow to load, and marking location was not effective, would try to re-store last location you marked. HuntX must use similar or same basic database, MUCH faster, and never failed to load (more expensive though, but in the end, if you are in the field it was more reliable—important hunting in the west where you can have a lot of mixed public and private land). I DO NOT recommend this for hunting in western states, just not reliable enough!.Version: 2.0.27

Not bad, good price, but needs work.Really need to work on updating the public hunting land...I live in WV and the boundaries are no where near where they should be, does not give accurate amount of acreage, and a lot of the public areas aren’t even on the map. Take for instance sand hill wildlife management area it is 2,000 plus acres and the app states it is 16 acres on one then 2 or 3 on the other. I just bought a year subscription due to the price over onX, but if this what I can expect from this app this will be the only year I’ll eat $30. I understand y’all are just gaining traction, but if you’re going to compare yourself to onX and have people say that your app is better, y’all better be squared away before hand..Version: 4.0.4

App is good but some issuesOverall, I like both the app and desktop versions. They should work to improve the quality of the offline maps. More frustrating is that they still are trying to sell their Research Data add-on product despite them knowing that it is unmaintained and way outdated. For example, it is March 2022, and they still only have hunting data (harvest rates, etc.) up through the 2019 season. Also, their season date info is still only from 2020. I purchased this last year and was a complete waste of $10 since the data was old, and when I asked them about it, I got the canned “we’re sorry” response. How about not selling a service that you cannot support? They stated that they only download from Eastman’s data once per year. Ok…so why not download when you know they’ll have more data. But even that is not true because they are still 2 years behind! And yes this is the case for ALL states and regions…I checked. Instead of selling an unusable product just to have it listed as a feature of their app vs competitors, they should make sure that it provides value first..Version: 5.2.5
