Waking Up: Meditation & Wisdom for Negative User Reviews

Not enough bang for my buckThere are 50 meditations and 37 lessons provided with the purchase. They remain available on the app for listening as many times as you like. After I listened to them I was then provided with a shorter daily meditation - only available to listen to on that day. The 50 meditations and 37 lessons are beautifully constructed and executed by Sam Harris. Both provided me with a new understanding of meditation and took me to new heights in my personal meditation practice. However the daily mediations that follow are on repeat. After a few weeks of completing the daily meditations I realized there was not much new provided here - he is simply reinforcing the same old same old .. like it’s on a loop. The app is way over priced to the point many will not be able to buy in. And those who do are not getting good value. Sam’s rationale for the cost of his app (as heard on a podcast) did not help. I felt it showed he was arrogant, cocky and it turned me off. Given the ridiculous price of the app for one year I expected more bang for my buck in content. The cost is waaaaay too much for 50 meditations and 37 lessons (though well done) and the looped daily meditations that continue (not so good)..Version: 1.2.4

No longer opens on my iPhone 6 PlusI love(d) this app until it stopped opening. It crashes instantly. So my expensive subscription is now useless :(.Version: 2.12.0

Issue with NotificationsI’ve only been using this for a few days but this issue with the notifications of the “moment” you’re supposed to be doing just disappearing is pretty annoying. I have all the notifications turned on for it but if I forget to swipe on it before unlocking my phone to access it I can’t find it anywhere. Usually if you have an email or message notification on a locked screen and unlock your phone you can then go to each app, open them and see whatever message, email etc. There’s nothing like that in this meditation app. When I open the app there is no *in app* message for your moment....so it’s just lost. If you’re on the phone, having a late supper, whatever...too bad! No moment for you! There’s a ton of stuff in this app but if you’re like me right now, feeling pretty overwhelmed with life, I just close it again because my brain can’t get past the *sort out the order yourself* aspect. I know people might think “just start with *the basics*!” But you’d really think an app that purports to be able to explain your brain to you would have some understanding about what people who are really trying to rescue their brain from the abyss are dealing with. So I’d say for real beginners this notification issue is related to the lack of a good introductory template for bringing people into a regular use of the app..Version: 1.6.35

Ploy to buy in to SH brand$165 a year! This guy has already figured out the way to siphon your money and data through podcasts, blogs and YouTube vids, now his media company wants you to spend a family grocery trip’s worth of money on an annual subscription to more prerecorded interviews. Look at all the data (in the app description, thank you Apple) you forfeit by participating! It’s just greedy and completely unaligned with the intent. I was guided here by another paid service that said they recommended this app over another but it’s yet another example of the kickback-based self-promotion internet economy..Version: 2.3.1

Finding Sam’s instructions confusingMy original review seems to have been deleted for some reason, so I’m re-posting it. I've been trying to build a meditation practice, on and off, for several years now. Unfortunately, I've never managed to stay consistent with it, and lately it has mostly been off. I'm fully sold on the benefits of regular meditation, but practicing on a daily basis is easier said than done, and I feel like I still haven't really progressed beyond the stage of mostly "thinking with my eyes closed." I've also been a fan of Sam's work for a long time, so I was eagerly awaiting the release of this app in the hope that it would get me "hooked" and teach me the techniques I need to progress. Unfortunately, after spending a few weeks with it, I'm a bit disappointed so far. I have to agree with Voletric's review; I find Sam's method of trying to disprove the existence of "the self" rather confusing. Many of Sam's instructions in this vein feel to me more like Zen koans than straightforward guidance, and they tend to leave me stuck in my thoughts, struggling to interpret them and understand what I'm supposed to take away from them. Perhaps I'm just too literal-minded, but this methodology does not seem to be working for me. I've had much more success with other apps like Calm and 10% Happier, even if their approaches are perhaps more surface-level..Version: 1.2.1

Overpriced - should not be subscription basedShould you do it? YES Annual subscription? NO, unless you see the app as a way to sponsor Sam’s work. I am a big fan of Sam Harris. I have many of his books, listen regularly to his podcast and first found him on YouTube. I think the work he is doing is very important but I also think this app is not for a subscription based model. I have some experience meditating and have used (and continue to use) some.excellent free apps that combine timers and guided meditations. Sam’s course is good. It gave me a new perspective on the approach and purpose of my practice. However, the course is better suited for a flat-fee model. In my opinion there is not enough value in it for a yearly subscription or for a subscription beyond the time it takes to complete the 50 lessons. The monologs are great but once you complete the course and listen to the monologs there is little (if any) new content to justify a subscription based model. I hope Sam recognize this and drops the subscription model. It seems just the right thing to do. It would be aligned with a “right intention, right action” perspective. The current model seems to be driven by greed....Version: 1.2.5

The app is great but....I’ve been using this app daily for almost two years and it’s been incredibly useful in introducing me to non-dualistic practice which I will continue. However, I’m not renewing my subscription again. Sam Harris seems to be increasingly forceful in his tone deaf “anti-antiracist” views, this seems to be his central message on other platforms and since the interview with Tara Brach, this has contaminated this app as well. I don’t disagree with the points he’s making but find his insistence and persistence around this issue off putting and lacking in emotional intelligence. I appreciate what I’ve learned so far and will continue building my nondualistic practice regardless. Thanks for being a bridge:).Version: 1.6.35

More diverse voices neededI have wondered why Sam predominately talks to CIS white straight men from the USA in his QandA section. While listening to his conversation with Tara Bracht, I realised that Sam has yet to recognise how structural racism and his own racist attitudes are intertwined. This chilled me to the core given the power he yields in the online mediation space and after everything we’ve been through in 2020. This was my introduction to the work of Tara Bracht and the inclusive space she has created to ensure everyone feels welcome by acknowledging the very real barriers to participation and uncomfortable work required to truly welcome the full spectrum of humanity to meditation. I’ll be redirecting my money to the work of Tara Bracht. Sam, I wish you well on your journey to actively educate yourself of the inequalities that marginalised communities face, choose to expand your friendship group to be more representative of the communities you live within and most importantly share this important platform you have with diverse voices..Version: 1.6.51

Lacking warmthI hope Sam and the team take no offence at this comment, it’s written as constructive feedback and I appreciate their kind efforts. As a practising Buddhist, I find the app removes a lot of the warmth from Buddhism/Non dual spirituality. Cutting straight through to the vastness of emptiness without first cultivating universal love and compassion can easily lead to nihilism and even psychopathy. I’ve noticed this in my own practice. Interspersing the odd meta meditation is just not enough. The emptiness based meditations on this app are good, but there is no clear path to enlightenment here. No guidance on how to deal with difficult situations or people on your life. At the same time, I feel like Sam himself is still attached to so much in his life, especially his political views and seems to be really affected when things don’t go how he thinks they ‘should’. For me this app jumps in too deep and can leave ones relationships actually worse off. There isn’t enough explanation around ultimate and conventional truth and how both of these truths need to be held simultaneously rather than one of the extremes. Anyone interested in these concepts would find a a much more enriching experience at a good dharma centre where they can build relationships with teachers and other students..Version: 2.0.4
