TZ iBoat – Marine Navigation for Negative User Reviews

FrustratedI don’t like this app. I’m on the Erie Canal and I just bought the Great Lakes zone and I get nothing. I want my money back.Version: 2.2.1

Nice basic appNice basic app, good detail and information. I like the ability to interface with my Furuno suite but is missing some of the key features available on other apps, especially auto routing, weather, tides, currents, departure/arrival time..Version: 2.2.1

ApplicationLa structure afin de l’utiliser est accès compliqué à comprendre?.Version: 2.3.6

Struggles with NavigationI got this app for planning purposes, mainly, as I’m using the onboard chartplotter for maps and on-water navigation. I really like the maps, though, and added a subscription for the upgraded charts. I like them so much that I wanted to navigate with TZ iBoat on my iPad - but spend most of the time trying to get the GPS to work, just constant ‘position lost’ messages and confusion… I’ve read the manual, can’t really find anything special about GPS configuration, and all other iPad apps have no problem with GPS, always work smoothly and reliably….Version: 3.0.4

Maps are nice, but live tracking could be better.I subscribed to this thinking that it would be a great backup for the chart plotter on mu boat. I also wanted to use it as a chart plotter for my dinghy when off on excursions. The maps really are very good, your position does not update very well while in motion. So it is really kind of like having the old school paper maps on board. Which is still useful. I am using this on an iphone 13 if that makes a difference..Version: 3.0.8

App needs upgrades to match the competitionI have had limited experience with the app but a big feature that is missing is auto routing which is available and works so well on other platforms. It’s not intuitive and even when looking at buying additional functionality/ modules it doesn’t clearly tell you what you are getting, if it’s a one time purchase or annual subscription etc. This App has a lot of potential but needs serious work before it will be my primary navigation tool..Version: 3.0.4

Ecosystem still incompleteFirst a blaring and almost inacceptable omission, where is Active Captain? A second omission, weather! Where is weather data? A third, Signal K instruments connection would be nice. But mainly, it is my opinion that the TZ ecosystem is incomplete. First, it is unacceptable to make your TZ Navigator, Professional, and Furuno clients pay charts twice. We already pay enough for charts on the PC or chart plotter and those should carry to the iPad companion app. I know it is related to your chart licensing agreements but this is the reason, not an excuse. Fix it! The new TZ cloud is a big step in the right direction in integrating PC and chart plotters with the app. We now share routes between the three platforms when connected to the internet. This is great! What I would like to see next is for the app to be a remote for the PC or chart plotter via an on-board WiFi network. I would like to be able to start a route from any device and have all of them synced instantaneously. Start the autopilot or radar (including radar connected to PC or chart plotter) from any device. Silence alarms from any device. An Apple Watch app to receive and acknowledge alarms, and provide instrument data, and route data such as XTE, would be awesome. Seeing how the TZ products, especially PC and Furuno based, innovate for professionals, ever pushing visualization and security features, it is very disappointing to see what appears to be a lack of vision in the mobility and cloud space. It appears as if Maxsea/Nobeltec/Furuno are content by simply playing catch-up with the competition as opposed to having an innovative vision in mobility and cloud. From an otherwise innovative company, this is disappointing to say the least. All that said, I still buy your products, so I guess I still believe!.Version: 1.0.15

Overly complicated routing and quirky with iBoatThis is a good program but overly complicated to operate. I have the DRS4W radar and iAISTX transponder. The initial setup of all this is somewhat complicated and requires time to get right. But it will work. The greatest problem with TZ iBoat is, it’s complicated routing procedure, turning routes on and off. The worst iBoat “feature” is assuming in the bottom right hand corner box of the screen assuming that the user always wants to record or visualise a trip. There must also be a better way to turn tracking and routes on and off, and program/store a route. It would be better to always show course and speed in its place. If you do not use routes every day, it’s almost impossible to remember how to program and use them in TZ, and using the top selection bars to turn on and off. Suggest use words rather than forgettable symbols. If I was to say anything to the TZ program designers, it would be that everything needs to be simplified down to the most basic level. The routing creation, selection, turning on and off is cumbersome. The assumption that you always wish to record a trip in the lower right hand corner is clutter on the screen. (Consider reversing the position of the start stop box with the “swipe right” instrument information that appears on the left of the screen.) The connection of an AIS transponder and to the DRS4W in the instruction manual could be expanded upon. The description of how to interface the DRS4W with the AIS data, and the radar could be expanded upon. However, it’s incredible that you can have charts, radar and AIS on the windscreen. All of that said, and despite its quirkiness, the TZ program does seem to do everything it’s intended. However, if you cannot remember how to operate the routes, then this function will not work for the user who wishes to quickly program the route. If you do recall how to do it, then the routing procedure is very difficult. Navionics routing procedure is much easier..Version: 2.4.0

Quite good, but a couple of little nigglesUse it for coastal fishing. Quite easy to add marks, but why oh why can you not name them as you add them? You have to tap ‘done’, then go to the mark, tap it, tap rename then enter the name. Adds unnecessary clunkiness to inputting marks. Also is a bit laggy when trying to zero in on a mark a low speed. Makes it difficult to anchor close to the mark..Version: 2.2.1

Unbelievably complicatedCan’t figure this thing out at all. It’s like everything is totally counter intuitive..Version: 3.0.0

Don’t purchase if you are on the Great Lakes in CanadaThey advertise raster charts for Great Lakes but there is a lot of information missing on the Canadian side. C-Map or Navionics apps have proper data..Version: 2.4.0

PriceAt $97 a year for vector charts, I may as well invest in a lowrance or garmin, Rip Off dont bother ppl....Version: 2.3.6

Not Worth The MoneyI bought this app thinking it would be a good tool to easily plan future routes and transfer them to my existing Furuno Black Box system. This app does not allow you to easily transfer points or routes to your Furuno plotters. You can pull up a tide or current prediction for a particular point within the app but there is no capability to get this data for a future date which renders this feature useless from a planning standpoint. The graphics are good, especially the transition between 2D and 3D and it’s helpful to visualize an entrance into a harbor you have never been to before. There is zero capability to use the data from this app on a Mac and the CloudZero feature is worthless because it only contains base data from a Raster chart. Would I use this instead of Navionics on my IPad and Mac? No. It’s not worth the money. It needs a huge amount of data input just to get up to speed with Navionics. Note: I have no financial ties to either Garmin or TZiboat and nothing to gain by the success/failure of either company..Version: 2.3.6

Awfull !!!!Do you only good thing about the product currently is the price of the charts subscription. my biggest pet peeve with this program is importing waypoints and routes. When importing waypoints TZ creates an additional waypoint on top and gives it a number. When you move the way point you now got to move two of them. Adding to the annoyance is that the created (numbered) waypoint lays on top of the one you created (and named) and becomes unreadible. As a Pro Mariner (Tug/Barge between Vancouver, West Coast upto Alaska) . we are frequently faced with routing issues and require many waypoints to be moved.. TZ has made this impractical and very annoying. If we create a voyage plan in TZ and export it (.gpx) also shows numbered waypoints on top of named, so now your stuck with twice as much waypoints. Unacceptabel TZ! Not renewing, not reccomending untill you fix this..Version: 2.3.8

It’s not freeI downloaded the app but it doesn’t show the depth you need to buy it.Version: 2.4.0

Pay twice for an upgradeThis app is good and it blends seamlessly with the (eye-wateringly expensive) Time Zero charts for PC. However, despite my subscription still having 5 months to run its simply wrong to demand that customers pay full price again to make use of what is simply an upgrade. With the high costs already associated with the PC it feels that the developers treat their customers with contempt. I don’t trust them not to do the same thing with future upgrades..Version: 3.0.0
