✓ Just okIt’s nice being able to control the settings and time limits from my phone but it only works half the time, lately none of the settings actually go to the kids tablets at all so it becomes a giant pain in the behind. The app is useless if the settings aren’t reflected on their devices in real time, one of my kids it never reflects changes I’ve made on the app and the other ones it takes hours and other times they have to turn the WiFi off and back on. ✓ Parental controls STILL broken on latest versionThe most recent update for the app has broken the parental controls. I only get an error message trying to reach the parents dashboard. Which makes the app useless. Please fix it. I’ve tried again a few months later. App is incredibly still broken and there are lots of reviews saying they can’t get on to the parental control page. I did add some books and content but in terms of monitoring what they are using, I can’t see more than the last three apps they looked at, bit pointless really. Can’t reset my pin because the Lock Screen doesn’t give me that option - would be good to have the option of doing it on the app so I can resolve WiFi issues more quickly. This includes adjusting daily time limits as well as pausing devices which are our most commonly used actions. Additionally, the slider to change total screen time doesn’t work at all in the iPhone app as it never stays where it was when user lifts their finger. She’s expressed interest in games on Duo Lingo and Scratch capabilities neither app available on the Fire Tablet. We’ve always used Apple devices but thought it was time for change. Hugely disappointed as she plays such Basic colouring games on the iPad or reviews books, there’s limited games for a 4 year old to independently play and learn. Lastly, the product features are clunky and time consuming. It’s impossible to get to the Home Screen and when you do we can only see downloaded content, there are no options to purchase or browse from the tablet. ✓ App is glitchy, rarely works as expectedI have fought with this app for literal years as my kids have kindle tablets. The app frequently has errors and will not load the parent dashboard on my phone. When the app does work, the changes made in the app often do not get transferred to the kids’ tablets, or there is a long delay before the changes are made. If we are outside of wifi range and I adjust the settings on a tablet, when the tablet returns to wifi service, the original settings replace the new ones. Ironically, when I was asked for a review today, I was trying for the umpteenth time to load the parent dashboard and just received yet another error message. 😣🙃.Version: 3.13.0

✓ Awful!Bought a year family subscription and really wish I hadn’t. The navigation of this app is awful! I wanted to have a kid friendly app that would encourage my children to read and find their own entertainment, but this is certainly not it. I also wanted to select and read books to my children at bedtime. Searching for books is really difficult. You can’t select categories, you can’t read a synopsis or even see the back cover, you literally select based on the cover only! Once you’ve chosen a book, there is no way to bookmark your page and the app doesn’t even open the book where you left off. I expected similar functionality to the kindle app, but there is none. There is no dark mode or changing of page colour, no font change other than size, no indication of pages left in the chapter, or simply overall book length. I was really hoping for an app that we could use to download books my granddaughter could have on the plane on our way to France and to read to her while we are there, so that we wouldn’t need to bring dozens of books with us, taking up space and weight. ✓ Could be amazing.. if..Ok let start with the good.. love the variety of books, games, and shows. We use these for the educational purposes. Love that you can set learning goals and time limits. Now.. on to things that seem to be pretty big issues that make me consider not repurchasing... it doesn’t seem to have a simple way to keep your child from downloading or deleting the apps, books, etc that are on there... so I have to turn off the WiFi on them.. which after a little while then the ones that are downloaded start acting weird and not working... plus every time they click something it automatically adds it to their carousel. I also wish there were descriptions of what the apps contain instead of having to download something that ends up not being what you thought. ✓ Very frustratingThe idea is great, there’s plenty of choice for the little ones, but there is no organisation in the app whatsoever. It’s a complete chaos inside. If you search for Peppa Pig for example you get a multiple tiles with it, no title at all and you need to go into every single one of them so you can see which season is it - and let me give you a hint - they are not in any order. Once you watch something it’s not letting you continue from where you left off (like in prime) - you need to remember what season and what episode you where up to, search for it again and play it. There is a section “Recent” on top where is everything already watched and my little one keeps loading the same episodes. It would have been way better instead of this “Recent “ to have “Continue watching “ on top, as in Prime so you can easily pick up where you left off. It would also be great if all seasons of one show are gathered in one section and are in chronological order as it is in Prime..Version: 2.0.1

✓ Book problemThis app is good but has a big problem, say your reading a book, and then after a few pages you exit out of the book, when you click the book again to pick up where you left up , it forgets your place. You have to read a certain amount of pages for it to bookmark it. I was reading this book and was about halfway through, (it was a long book) I read a lot more, and was almost at the end, when I decided to take a break. ✓ Need more improvements!We have used the Epic app more more that five years and recently decided to try the Freetime app. to explore new books for our 9 and 4 years old daughters. Our fourth grade need to read everyday to complete her daily reading log for her school and need to record # of pages and time she read. In the Epic app I do not any problem with this; however, in the Freetime my daughters cannot use any of its books because it doesn’t show reading levels, book activity or numbers of pages for any of its books. I really like the app because it has a nice variety of books sadly my oldest daughters can’t use for school. It would nice if they also add a summary when pressing the book you want to read and also add a quiz as an option at the end of each book. I really hope they makes updates for this app. I will try it for a year and hope for the best!.Version: 1.3.0

However, I really want to use time limits and educational goals to require reading before video watching. We had an old Kindle Fire tablet with FreeTime where that all worked as expected. It’s deceiving and makes the product seem broken. OLD REVIEW: Search and filters are a must. My child is 7 but reads at a higher reading level. There is no way to set that. And there’s no way to search for things he’s interested in. He’s far beyond picture books, but the Harry Potter books show up alongside the Pete The Cat books. It’s the most disorganized library ever. Also, I don’t want him watching videos or reading too late at night. We are thinking about getting an iPad because the fires can be quite glitchy and don’t work well for more than a couple years. So I downloaded this app on my iPhone to check it out. There are no apps/games. The books and videos are there but there are no games at all. The only reason I’m keeping the app is because of the parents dashboard. It shows what they have been watching and playing and how much time they spent on each thing even on their Fire tablets. I can’t change the pin, turn off wifi, stop them from accessing videos, or anything else without accessing the settings menu on the tablet itself. Which means entering the PIN which the tablet says is wrong. And it WONT let me change it, help articles say it can be changed on the Lock Screen but THERE IS NO LOCK SCREEN! And as I said before I can update the pin on my phone with this app but IT DOES NOT TRANSFER TO THE TABLET!!! So I’m blocked from updating parental controls for pre schoolers. What logic is this? I subscribed to this for my son to have more option for reading material as majority of his reading for school is nonfiction right now. He has to log his reading daily which includes the pages numbers. After beginning his first book we realized that there are no page numbers. ✓ Hard to navigate. Functions don’t functionAs above And searching for content is impossible. I can find an app I want in my phone but I cannot add it remotely using my account. There is an “add content “ menu, but it doesn’t work, there is no content in the menu and you can’t search from there. If I try to search the exact same name, four words all spelt correctly then I cannot find the same app. My phone is full of apps and books I wanted fir the kids but I can’t get them in the tablet, Music does not work unless Alexa is enabled, but I don’t want Alexa I cannot re-designate websites as “education “ so the kids homework website cannot be accessed if I have the “education goal” in place. I cannot preview books or apps, so “coding” or “times tables” apps turn out to be a platform game. Most of the books are too simple for my kids and I cannot access more appropriate bins for their reading ability. It cannot tell the difference between apps for education and watching videos, so you think you have 30 mins of education apps first as a setting, but apps fir games or watching CBBC or ITVX is included in the educational target instead of the watching videos filter. ✓ Potential but needs workWe have this installed on our Fire tablets for our 3 and 5 year olds. I like choosing and downloading the content for them, and turning off the wifi so they only have access to the content I specifically choose for them. Often, however, the download will fail and I’ll be unable to access the content for some unknown reason. Also, there is no description for the apps, so finding something suitable for them involves a lot of guess work; there’s no way I tell what each app is without downloading and testing each one myself first. This is ridiculously time consuming. Recently, I put the app to my iPhone and was annoyed to find that there’s no way to download games or shows (just books), so my kids would require access to the internet to use it, and they’d be overwhelmed with thousands of apps and shows that might not be suitable for them. ✓ Ok, Confusing that Controls Not in Alexa AppSetting up a child’s profile on Echo devices, coordinating wake words, and enabling drop ins is confusing. We bought an echo show so that other family adults, also each with their own echo show, but located in different states, could drop in on the kids and the kids could drop in on them. It is not self evident how to permit this. The device is terrific but the Alexa App and accompanying FreeTime App do not yet seamlessly work together. I love the variety she has but HATE some of the things that are deemed “kid appropriate” my child is only 4 years old and found videos by “The Onyx Family” and has been saying odd things. As near as I can tell, in order for my kid to be able to listen to music I have to download ANOTHER app (the Alexa app) in order to enable “skills”. ✓ How to cancel subscription!In ITunes Store(not App Store), go to the bottom and select your Apple ID. Under the account settings menu that pops up, scroll down to subscription. You can cancel there. As for the app itself, you can’t see the selection until you agree to the trial. Lots of books, which I give 2 stars for, but almost everything in the video section is already available on Prime. Also, I hear on devices other than Apple, they have more options, such as children’s apps and games. It’s ridiculous to charge IOS users the same subscription price, but not give us the same content everywhere else. I’m sure the reason apps aren’t available is licensing issues with Apple, but at least reduce the monthly fee. Won’t be keeping the subscription....Version: 1.3.0

✓ Parental Controls are a JokeAbsurd amount of content “curated” by Amazon’s “experts” with what qualifications exactly? Most of the content is extremely questionable. It may seem “harmless” because it’s cutesy and meaningless, but that doesn’t make it harmless. There is definitely great stuff in there somewhere, but it’s impossible for parents to control what their kids have access to. I would love to choose, for example, 5 apps and 10 books that are age appropriate for my kids and have those accessible to them, and then next week swap some of them out for other books and games that I choose, but there is no practical way to do it. Sure I could load it with content I want and then disconnect it from the internet, but then the content that I want them to have access to doesn’t work because it needs Wi-Fi, and the the parental controls on education first and time limits don’t work, because that needs Wi-Fi. It’s frustrating. I would love to take advantage of the good that’s in there, but there’s no way to do it. I’m right now canceling my free subscription that came with the tablet my youngest got for Christmas. I would rather buy apps and books that are good quality and good for them then let my kids by swamped with garbage every time they get on their tablets..Version: 3.13.0
✓ Really great app for quick referencesThis is a really great app and I wish I could give it a better review however, longer books cannot be saved and cannot be bookmarked. My children get frustrated when they forget a book that they found and liked and then can’t remember what the title was because it couldn’t be saved anywhere for them. ✓ Almost Perfect but For the Feature I Use Most OftenReally like the control the app allows. The feature I use most though is the ability to change daily time limits as a reward for completing chores. The daily time limit selector is a slider bar and so sensitive that it’s difficult for it to keep the selected time and takes several tries. It’s also only selectable in 15 minute increments.
