Dwell: Audio Bible for Negative User Reviews

Working with DwellI haven’t spent much time acquainting myself with how apps work. I do other things with the hours of the day. Now that I am trying to work with this Dwell App which I really like, I struggle to just get it to do what I’d like. I don’t suppose there’s a manual is there? Such knowledge seems to simply be assumed by all nowadays..Version: 2020.03

Don’t be a poor steward of God’s moneyI was so excited when I first saw this app. It was the only one that pulled up when I did a search for audible Bibles. I have a dear friend who is legally blind, and can no longer read scripture. I was also interested in finding something that would allow me to hear the Scriptures as I work with my crafts or cook. We are both on disability and paying $40 a year for this subscription is beyond our means. It is sad that the Bible can be purchased so cheaply or given free in book form, but for those who really need something like this, it is unattainable financially through Dwell. There are other audible Bible apps that are completely free, as it should be. So many need an app like this and for Dwell to charge, I think is abominable. I don’t think Christ is very pleased of a company to make money off of selling something that is so desperately needed, like for my blind friend. Why pay for something that others offer freely and with the right motives?.Version: 2023.1.3

New user experience is appallingTerrible experience for a new user. I thought this app sounded great and downloaded it to try. Unfortunately the ‘first run’ user experience is set up in what feels like a disgraceful, predatory way. There is no trial content available without first creating an account, giving your card details and signing up to an auto-renewing subscription. I though these sorts of dark patterns in user experience design were a thing of the past in ‘modern’ apps. This might even violate Apple’s user experience guidelines, which I believe state that an app ought to have some sort of basic experience upon first run before payment is required. I should not have to enter my card details to get a taste of the app. Why not include one book to listen to? If you’re going to give a 7 day trial, why require my card details and ‘auto-renew’ first? I’ve been put off the app by this aggressive and disappointing sales tactic..Version: 2012.12

Christian music pleaseI am enjoying listening to the bible every morning. Just wondering if Dwell is planning to add hymns. I love music, my favourites are well known hymns from my school days and I love the new ones like Chris Tomlin. I have them on my play list, however it would be great to have them here. Music keeps me devoted to God’s word and helps me to praise him and rejoice in his goodness. Thank you Blessings, Brenda.Version: 2021.05

Limited without paymentI’m not a fan of how limited the app is without the requirement to pay to unlock the majority of basic scripture but I like that you can choose the voice and variety in settings..Version: 2020.07

Audio Bible great, functionality not greatI love the actual content of the audio Bible - great variety of voices and versions and the ability to customize speed, background music, etc is great. I paid for the annual subscription and because of that didn’t expect to face the functionality bumps I’ve had… to download scripture to listen offline (driving is one of the main reasons I purchased this subscription), you have to do it chapter by chapter. That means I’m hitting the download button 16 times to download the book of Mark. I attempted to create a playlist and then download that as a faster option but going back to the app today I see “UserPlaylist5754…” not the title I created and cannot click on the downloaded playlist. Perhaps I’m expecting the app to do something they don’t promote it being able to do… Hope this can be smoothed out in the future!.Version: 2022.5

Anguished AudioI want to like this app. I really do. But the way in which the readings are done is very distracting. The phrasing is often unnatural and stilted, with constant pauses and inflections that interrupt the smooth flow and can make it hard to listen to without constantly thinking that something is not quite right at best and annoying at worst. Some speakers are better or worse than others, but if you’re looking to listen to a particular version of the Bible, as well as a particular version/accent of English, then you may be stuck with disappointing audio. And, I think this effect is even more noticeable if you’re trying to follow along with the written text as you listen. Then you not only hear how disjointed the phrasing and flow are, but seeing the flow of the text through punctuation really highlights the audio deficiencies. Also, in listening to Matthew in the ESV, read by Mark, I noticed a few occasions where words from the text were omitted (not critical words, but missing nonetheless) and where the way in which a word was stressed actually changed the meaning of the word, making it function as a different part of speech than what was intended. THERE SHOULD BE EDITING PROCESSES IN PLACE SUCH THAT THERE SHOULD BE NO MISSING WORDS FROM THE TEXT WHATSOEVER. THIS IS CRUCIAL. This can’t be a reliable tool if there are errors in it..Version: 2020.12

Mixed feelingsReally like the app itself. Disappointed in the new devotionals. They are very liberal leaning and I will probably stop recommending and gifting Dwell because of it..Version: 2023.12.1

Can’t easily download BibleA superb app in terms of look and functionality but one thing that disappoints me, but am trusting they will eventually amend, is making it much easier to download the whole Bible so you can listen to it offline. The audible audio bibles make this function simple, obvious and intuitive, something I have not yet found in this app. However, I am still glad I bought the app but I will still be predominantly listening to an audible bible..Version: 2022.26

Just getting startedI’ve not had this long, all looks great so far. Lots of different ways of listening. Good that can regulate the background music not only the volume but the type of music, or none at all. Voices very good to hear. Best app on listening to the bible for sure. Well done to those who have put it together All good except every name to share the review seems taken, not sure they can be as have tried some very weird ones. 😄.Version: 2020.11

Not getting betterI’ve reviewed this in the past and what started out as a good product is unfortunately trending in a bad direction. 1. If you have a plan, it’s getting harder to find where your plan overview is. Your homepage is filled with “Dwell Daily” with a really weird “I am” affirmation style meditation vibe. Honestly - if you want to view your listening plans you need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. Yes, they do include the day in the “up next” but if you want to pick something different or listen to multiple plans at a time it’s just very frustrating. Please, please, PLEASE let us customize what we want to see and not see on our home page. I understand you want to push the devotions or whatever but I really loved this app because it was high quality simple scripture. Don’t over complicate it. If you must include devotions, YouVersion at least lets people upload/pick what you listen to. I’m not asking you to stop the devotions, but at least give people the option to remove them from the home page. If you can track the data of the users that remove the function, at least you know you aren’t hurting your subscriber base and can move on to more profitable things. If I’m wrong, the function would at least appease the small minority. Really nothing to be gained from forcing it though. Please, at least consider it!.Version: 2024.2.1

Room for improvementBacked this on Kickstarter as was super keen to have a Bible app I could listen to, but it sounds like individual verses have been recorded separately and the intonation of the voices is therefore very bizarre in places. Also, the voices chosen are actually quite strange. There doesn’t appear to be any voices with people just reading the Bible like a person would. There’s too much drama. A project like this ultimately rises and falls based upon available voices, but currently none of them really cut it. A bit sad really as I’ve subscribed for a year..Version: 1.0.1

BCP 2019 “Daily Office” Reading Plan Needs Some TweaksHi Dwell Team, I just submitted a review a few minutes ago about the “2019 Daily Office” reading plan, but neglected to include my 5th point in my previous review, so I’m including it separately here— 5) It would be EXTREMELY HELPFUL if, instead of calling the days “Day 1,” “Day 2,” “Day 3,” if the reading plan instead named the days “January 1,” or perhaps “Day 1 / January 1st.” Unlike other Bible reading plans that are completed privately, the whole point of the Daily Office is to be reading the same readings that everyone else in the Anglican community is reading on that date, which means you have to be reading the passages for that exact date, even if you are “behind” on the readings. I’m going through the Daily Office readings with a group of other women from my church, so it is very important that I know what readings to complete for a given date in the month! With the current system of numbering “Day 1,” “Day 2,” “Day 3,” it is a huge logistical headache to figure out which reading I’m supposed to be listening to on a given day. If you make no other changes to the 2019 “Daily Office” reading plan, this change alone would be a GAME CHANGER in making this reading plan more user-friendly for Anglican listeners. Thanks for your help! - Joy.Version: 2021.07

Where is the disclaimer that this a paid app??I was willing to try out this app, I also have a couple of similar Bible apps that are free, but always looking for something better. Once I downloaded the app I find there is very little to use without downloading a free trial to basically unlock the whole app! Not even able to read the Bible. Why have you not declared this with an in-app purchase notification? I hate these kind of manipulative ‘free’ apps offers. Might have been ok with buying a ‘full’ version, but I’m turned off by the lack of transparency..Version: 2023.1.3

Great butThe app is brilliant. But I don’t understand the functions. When listening to the yearly plan and I tick that I have read it, it doesn’t keep the information. I have to tick everything I have read again and again. Is that suppose to be like that? I also miss that once I have red a section that I will be taken automatically to the next passage instead of having to find the plan anew each time. What do I do wrong?.Version: 2019.21

You have to pay for everythingIm not even kidding you only have acess to 4 books and the other ones you have to subscribe getting a pyshical bible will be cheaper anyways. These people are money hungry, don’t even get the app and just stick to bible apps and the physical one.Version: 2022.21

Great concept! Still a bit cumbersome.I really love this app, but I’m having trouble navigating; it took me several minutes just now to figure out why the preconfigured playlist was looping on a single verse. The “now playing” screen disappeared and I couldn’t get it back. A clearer way to make my own list of clips for memorisation or meditation would be very welcome..Version: 2021.10

Great concept, clumsy queue functionalityI am having issues with my queue. Many times I long press a passage to add it to my queue, but when I actually open the queue it isn’t there. But then when I open the listening options while a passage is playing, under the options for repeat it will allow me to repeat my queue, which lists that I have multiple songs in my queue, say 5 or 6. But they aren’t there when I pull up my queue immediately after. If I select it to repeat the queue, sometimes it will in fact start playing songs I know I added to my queue, but again, when I pull up the queue they are invisible. This limits my most basic listening functionality. In the mornings I just want to load up a few select chapters to my queue to listen on the go, but I don’t know if they added or not, and even if they did I can’t arrange the order or manage them because when I pull up my queue they are invisible..Version: 2020.02

Horrible AppWhy would you have the Bible locked except a few books? Was this app made to edify the body of Christ or was it made to profit off them like 2 Peter 2 says..? That question is for you because I already know the answer….Version: 2022.19

Keeps closing downEach time I click on a scripture to read, the app closes down. It’s been happening for days I have even tried to uninstall the app and install again. I may have to pursue getting a refund from apple.Version: 2023.2.1

Talk to me when you have car playI only tried one voice which annoyed me. But the main issue is I listen in the car and lack of CarPlay functionality is a deal breaker for me. Also, only 3 translations, although I could live with that..Version: 2020.10

Not bad😎I dont use it too much but its alright 👍🏻.Version: 2021.08

Needs improvementGood idea! But could get it to do anything kept freezing or something weird ..Version: 2023.3.1

Bible appI was really excited to hear the add for this app. But after downloading it to be hit with pay this or this but you get 7 days free. Now if I was told upfront no problem I would gladly pay. When I thought well I’ll pay lifetime membership. I certainly didn’t expect the money to be in U. S. $. Ouch because of our $ value price jumped to almost double. Please be up front with people, not to be is deceptive..Version: 2020.04
