Pimsleur: Language Learning for Negative User Reviews

Very nice method - way too expensive18.95$CA a month is too expensive- especially that other apps offer as good learning for free AND not only with English instructions.Version: 3.5

Usually a great app...But it won’t open anymore? I sign into my user, after which I reach the page to select what lesson level I’m at. I click on the level, and then it just goes to a loading screen. Never loading up the lesson plan for the level I’ve chosen. Thereafter, every time I open up the app all I get is the same loading screen..Version: 2.11

A little disappointed:(Well I am learning Turkish as I am soon going to turkey I was so happy and excited that it works and the first lesson 👏🏼 it was amazing it taught me how to say excuse me how to ask for stuff and more so I was soooo happy but when I went onto lesson 2 it said I had to pay for it and I was really sad there’s not even like a free week which is really sad and I’m not a teenager or adult so I can’t really pay online as I haven’t got a card pls fix this bug as I am now really sad and dissatisfied and disappointed 😔.Version: 3.8

Awful customer careAlthough the app itself is ok, the company refuses to provide any payment receipts and there is no way to download receipts online. Despite several contacts, the company kept ignoring my correspondence! There are a lot of similar products available so choose one that can give you a proper customer care! I would also like to add that the reply to my complaint is a total joke! I have contacted the customer care at that email several times and never had a reply! And I confirm that, the first time we contacted your customer care you clearly said that you don’t provide receipts!!! So please don’t try to make yourself appear efficient and mislead future customers with false statements..Version: 4.1

Maybe MP3 is Better?Pimsleur has been one of my language learning go-tos for many years (Russian, Spanish, Romanian, Italian) But when I reported that the app freezes up when you stop and start, the helpdesk informed me that I was Doing It All Wrong and would Fail to Learn because I was stopping after the prompt in order to have more time to respond. Language learning is my hobby, so I know that everyone needs to use tools in the most effective ways for them. I slow down Pimsleur to 75% or 80% while I’m in the shower, and when I’m working directly with the program I stop the app to have time make my responses, exactly the way I patiently wait for my English students to put together new sentences. (If I didn’t do this, I would feel like a failure and lose my motivation, plus I’m not willing to listen to those lessons more than twice!) So consider downloading the MP3 and using a more flexible MP3 player that will correspond to your own language learning preferences. In the meantime, I do indeed recommend Pimsleur for starting a new language (but be sure to use other resources as well.).Version: 2.4

Somehow got charged when was supposed to have a free trialI downloaded the app and it said clearly FREE FOR 7 DAYS. I went ahead and authorized it and only saw after I was charged 26.49 a month. Looks like I may have downloaded this in the past but I never used it so maybe that’s why. I tried the app and don’t like it anyhow. It is quite expensive considering there are so many other options. Lesson learned I guess. Will be deleting..Version: 5.2

26$ a month?Let’s be real you don’t need 51 languages. Probably not even half of that. I feel y’all need to reconsider the monthly subscription fees..Version: 4.6

Bad customer serviceMost apps will refund you a subscription even though it’s passed the renewal date. This app will not. The company charged me a full year of subscription and will not issue a refund, even though I called in just a few days late..Version: 5.2

What's wrong with this app?I downloaded this new Pimsleur app because I thought it would be more convenient. Not all Pimsleur courses run on the 'Unlimited' app, so you needed to have two apps installed. This promised to be the app that worked for all Pimsleur courses. The first problem is that it's very slow downloading courses, and the second problem is that it crashes. It has crashed for me twice--simply refusing to do anything. That happened on a new iPhone and an old iPad, so I'm not sure what OS it was designed for. So, I am very frustrated with it. I'll return to using the other two Pimsleur apps. The basic one is slow to react, but functional. The Unlimited one works perfectly. (Several months later) ... I've just downloaded the new version of this app on my old iPad running 10.3.3. It doesn't even open..Version: 2.2

Bugs need fixingGreat app & program. That being said, when I go into the reading materials (for Hebrew), they never come up. Just a continuous loading screen. On 2 different hi speed wifi’s and mobile data- just loading screen. Fix and I’ll give 5 stars..Version: 2.15

App is a scamI just downloaded the app because it says it’s free to download. I’ve wanted to learn a few languages for a while now. So I thought I’d give this app a try since I’ve seen adds for it. However, after downloading and setting up an account it tells you that you can try it free for 7-days then you have to pay for a monthly subscription. That’s not free and it’s forcing people to get a subscription. I don’t have a lot of money right now and I thought while I have more free time than normal I could start to learn one of the languages I’ve wanted to learn maybe someday when I have more money upgrade my account not be forced into it after 7-days. There is also no way to delete your account if it’s free and not on a paying subscription until after the 7th day when you get charged and then they state they won’t refund subscriptions. There is a possibility you can cancel a free account only by calling in. It’s appalling to refuse subscription refunds especially if you force people into it even if they may not want a subscription or cannot afford it..Version: 4.7.1

Sharing is too difficultNot sharing friendly, too expensive, not enough time between prompts, more for people who learn language easily already. Explanations: Would love to be able to share this app with my family as we all try to learn a language together. Pimsleur is a very high price monthly comparative to other language apps so being able to share would make the cost more reasonable. However, you have to share your password in order to do so. If you have purchased the app through Apple then you have to share your Apple ID. Yikes! Not something anyone should be forced to do. Highly recommend Duo Lingo instead for sharing. I’ve learned so much more and faster with dl too. Pimsleur became a secondary way to practice speaking but for the cost and without a better way to share it isn’t worth the money. Spend your money elsewhere. Also, Pimsleur does not give ample time between prompts to form sentences. So it is a bit frustrating, which is discouraging. With some app and time adjustments this could be an amazing platform for advanced language learning..Version: 4.4

AverageI use thé app everyday, and i like it but it does have some issues, the lessons are fine but they don’t explain why anything is what it is, for example it will tell you how to form a word ending without explaining why it ends that way or what the rule is etc. also the AI technology for the speaking challenge is utterly TERRIBLE. It mishears you when you have objectively said it correctly, whilst spelling words you’ve said an alternative spelling so that it doesn’t recognise it as correct. Also, there is no way of saying that the AI has made a mistake, unlike on apps like Dualingo that if u believe you have been graded wrongly or there has been a technical error etc it will amend it. it’s also overpriced for what it is..Version: 4.10

Very useful but one feature does not workGreat app but has one small bug that takes a lot of value away. The download lesson option does not work. Seriously hope this gets fixed for future version updates as it would be quite handy to not use data when learning on the go.Version: 2.15

Customer service non existentWasn’t very impressed with the course, which was slow and repetitive (Spanish Castilian) and attempted to unsubscribe. The website sends you around and around, directing you to a page where you should be able to unsubscribe. On that page, it says follow one of the above links to manage your subscription - NO LINKS EXIST. On another attempt, I was asked for my last name and my account number, so that they could locate my subscription. I couldn’t find my account number in the ‘account details’ section, and checked my emails to find that I have ZERO emails from them. Account number impossible to find. Another dead end. I decide that I’ll need to ring them, and call the international number (from the UK). After the number not working a few times, I heard a disgusting dial tone, and finally someone picked up. I told them I need to cancel my subscription. They told me I was through to 999, and asked if I need an emergency service. WHAT?! Let your customers unsubscribe when they would like to! Swindlers.Version: 2.17

Horrible. Crashes constantly.I love the Pimsleur content but their app has been nothing but trouble. I bought the courses outright so I could download and listen offline. The app simply doesn’t work. It crashes constantly even though my iOS is fully updated and so is the app. On top of all that, I initially had a subscription for their service and they won’t refund me even though I couldn’t even use it due to their dodgy app. Steer clear of this..Version: 2.15

“Meh” appI’ve been studying a language for 6 months and looking for additional / better learning material. My problem with this app: cannot test to a specific level (given my level 1 isn’t helpful). Cannot test or trial higher levels (or maybe you could, but I hit a pay wall). Odd method of learning in this decade: for example, in Russian, rather than Cyrillic letters, the lessons or tests were in English pronunciation. Company need to reconsider direction of app in order to exist in the next 2 years....Version: 2.8

Terrible customer serviceI don’t understand how this company/app has such good reviews. Maybe nobody has had to deal with their customer service. Last spring I signed up for the Pimsleur premium program specifically for Arabic and canceled it after a month because I wasnt using it. Then somehow for the next 8 months I was charged for a Spanish subscription I never signed up for. I repeatedly tried to contact Pimsleur, which was a joke. I had to jump through so many hoops to get in touch with anyone, and even then the person I was talking to had no clue how to help me (it’s just a simple refund!!). After months of back and forth they finally agreed to refund me for the full 8 months. But then of course I was only refunded 6 of the 8 months. They keep telling me they will process the rest of the refund but weeks go by and nothing happens. I first subscribed last April or May 2022 and it is now almost March 2023 and I STILL HAVEN’T GOTTEN ALL MY MONEY BACK FROM THE SUBSCRIPTION THEY WRONGFULLY CHARGED ME FOR. It’s outrageous. Please save yourself a huge headache and find another way to learn a language..Version: 4.4

Good program, poor appI’m reviewing the app, not the program. I bought this primarily to use in the car on my iPod touch, but about 3 quarters of the time when I attempt to do so, the lessons I have previously downloaded are not playable and require re-downloading. Unsure why the files corrupt like this, it should be simple to just download and play an audio file..Version: 2.5

The app is messed upFirst of all you can’t really see your subscriptions in the app or at least I didn’t manage to find it. Now I want to switch to the one language only subscription and I don’t seem to find a way to do it via the app - the only options it offers are all languages or lifetime access one language. Like, what? When I log in to the website it’s no easier - I need to enter an account number to look up my subscription, like again - is this a joke? How about having this info there as I log in?? I guess this is too much to ask..Version: 4.3

Learning germanI have been doing Duolingo for over a year, then saw this which is more immersive. Have cancelled my subscription with it though, was helpful for 7 days free trial but not as personalised. I had to skip a few lessons and try and navigate where I was at. It was tricky to actually cancel my subscription, have to do it online etc Also they seem to always use the most formal terms 'ihren‘ rather than 'du' and don't have any options to conjugate that. Was good to listen to whilst driving but not worth my money extending it.Version: 5.3

It’s not to good🤨I don’t think people should download this app. I mean it is pretty good like you can still download it if u want but I think it’s little hard because for some reason I can’t remember anything from the laungwidge I’m learning. It still is really good but it’s a little bit hard to remember..Version: 3.7

LessonsI downloaded Pimsleur 2 days ago and after my first 30 minute lesson I was very confident in my speaking and had a good understanding, which i why i really liked this app. I say ‘liked’ because it’s been over a day now and I still haven’t been able to do the second lesson. This is annoying because i enjoyed using Pimsleur but now i can’t (except doing revision but that kelts repetitive and boring) because i can’t learn anything new. It better not cost money because then that would be stupid. Please can you tell me what’s wrong. Thanks.Version: 3.6

Poor Customer ServiceI updated my payment method (PayPal) but Pimsleur cut me off the next day, despite PayPal saying they had been authorised to take money from my account. I tried to update my payment information again by logging into Pimsleur but it would not allow me to update any of my information. I then emailed them and they told me to create a new account with the same email address so I did not lose my progress. I tried this but as my email already exists in their system it won’t allow me to create an account. Despite further emails asking for help I have had no response from them. Very disappointing!.Version: 5.2

Good app overall.I was surprised to find out after paying for the course, that it's entirely audio based and no text transcript provided. I learn Thai which is a difficult language to pick by ear. It would be great to have a text version too. Overall a good app, a little too repetitive - your progress will be very slow. Won't buy a next course..Version: 3.7

Ok concept but terrible supportI’ve been learning the Croatian Level 1. It’s nice to be able to repeat the lessons as many times as i need but, I find that the reading lessons are confusing. They’re just Croatian words with no translation and, a few of them don’t even come up when I try to get the google translate. Then there’s the Amerikanac and Amerikanka! I’m Australian and I sent a question asking how I’d say that but the reply is robotic and didn’t answer any of my questions. I gave only 2 stars because I think someone needs to be in the support line to answer questions..Version: 2.9

Adults Don’t Learn Language the Same as ChildrenPimsleur assumes that an adult who is STUDYING a new language will learn the same way a child does merely by listening. THAT IS NOT TRUE. Children learn language by association. They are completely immersed in an environment where they constantly see and hear adults and older children moving their lips, speaking sounds, making facial expressions, and pointing at things. Moreover, children can interact with and touch things in the environment in which they are learning language without the hindrance of already knowing a language. An adult STUDYING a second language will naturally initially filter the foreign language through a translation into their first language and associate the foreign word and sentence structure with their native word and sentence structure. Spewing sentences in a foreign language without a literal translation that shows adults word-for-word how the foreign language structures it’s sentences is merely a frustrating, laborious, and fruitless means of passing the time. And to heap on more frustration, it’s nearly impossible to hear what the voices are speaking: did he just speak with a “b” in that word or a “d”?.Version: 3.5

Can’t cancel subscription!! DO NOT SUBSCRIBE IF YOU LIVE IN AUSTRALIAI live in Australia and subscribed to Pimsleur last year via their website. I can’t log in to my ‘account’, verify it and therefore cancel it because apparently it doesn’t exist! I’ve emailed and called all the listed support numbers but have not received a response, and the numbers are not connected. I’m desperate to cancel my subscription as I can’t afford it anymore!!.Version: 4.6

CostAmazing app but it costs way to much.Version: 5.1.1

Great App, too priceyLove the app. I’ve been using it for months. If there was a one time buy price of $200-250 then I’d buy it but the monthly subscription that everyone does these days adds up. Now that I’ve canceled it I’ll loose access to the lessons I’ve done. No opportunity to review and maintain my skill level. In the end it’s money wasted. Update: From your website it looks like each level is $150. Spanish has five levels so the complete course is $750+tax. Not sure if that is in USD or CAD. It’s a great product, just too rich for my blood..Version: 4.1

Don’t need 51 languages at onceThis is a great language learning model but the app is just way too expensive. Some kind of marketing psychology oversell going on here. “Only $25 a month for 51 languages!” Ok but how many languages can I seriously learn at once? It’s a monthly subscription, not like I get to keep them all to them to learn at my leisure..Version: 4.9
