Can skip through too easilyThis is an awesome game in theory, however, there is one huge flaw that would make the lessons sink deeper. My 3 year old loves the game and wants to hurry up and make it to the top of the buildings/put the books back/etc. He rushes through it so quickly, the information in the lessons aren’t really sinking in. IF the developers could make it so that the child CANT choose an answer until the question is fully read that would help my child slow down and really listen to what’s being asked of him. For example, there is a letter missing from a word and the child must choose the correct letter to complete the word. My child just presses buttons before the question says what word we are trying to complete. He keeps hitting keys until he gets a “green” light and moves to the next lesson and we don’t know if he was trying to spell rat or rag. It’s a frustrating aspect for me because I want him to listen to the words being presented meanwhile he is just trying to “win”. Show the options but don’t allow the child to choose anything until the question is finished, and then you’ll get a 5 star rating from me. Overall everything else is very engaging and smart. If you've got a patient child, this app is perfect as is..Version: 1.85.0

Excellent App - The only tweaks could be in contentWe absolutely love the app for our 3.5 year old. Using this app in addition to our other letter and language studies - and with adult supervision and conversation throughout - has been an excellent tool that she’s excited about. The only complaint I have is that there is a ton of content about sugar, snacks, and cookies. We don’t talk about these things or use these words in our home; so now for our daughter to be demanding cookies and lollipops every time we leave the house is a bit disheartening. I would also love an option to choose how many sounds/celebrations there are for correct answers. I use the DuoLingo app as an adult for learning a language, and have turned off the sounds for correct answers. I would love this option for my toddler….. we’re living in a time when it’s already so difficult to combat the overwhelming advertising and misinformation about what is healthy food for our bodies, and also combating social media addiction and dopamine addiction and overload. I do love the app and and our child does too, but I worry about the constant snack and sugar references and too many dopamine hits along the way. It’s all quite addictive..Version: 1.73.1

In ProgressWe recently started using the app. Thus far these are my comments: My son is 6 years of age. He truly enjoy the app thus far. I am enjoying his enthusiasm as well. It is a good app thus far. Glitches: 1. The app requires children to read some of the sentences aloud. The glitch occurs when my son is reading and the app is listening. He’s reading but the app does not allow him to finish. It skips forward as if he completed the reading but he did not. This is a very frequent glitch. It occurs numerous times within a lesson. 2. There are times when the sound stops during lessons. This is infrequent but it nevertheless occurs. 3. There are times when the app shuts down during lessons. This is also infrequent but it nevertheless occurs. Recommendation(s) 1. Please add a “back button”. This will come in handy as enable us to go backwards so we may review & reinforce some learning tasks..Version: 1.85.0

Nice bud weird gameIt take way to long to lean a language it take about tree years. I don’t like how if you lose your 5 heart you can not play for 5 days. I don’t really like the game but it is okay. If there are kids that are playing they would like to learn a language easy but it is a little hard. But in the end it is a good game I like how it motivates you well to play as much as you want a day. My friend has been playing for a year and she still cannot say a sentence..Version: 1.69.0

Won't allow me to loginCan some one conact me. I like the game but have not been able to acess it. keeps telling me something went wrong..Version: 1.96.2

Ridiculous squeaky voiceThis app would be great if it used a normal voice, instead it uses s as high pitched sped up voice that is hard to understand. It speaks faster than the words are highlighted so it does not work for teaching how to read! I don’t understand why the app uses this voice. Please tell me if I can change it. It also only let my daughter write her name once and knows we can’t figure out how she can do it again, which is all she wanted to do at first..Version: 1.69.0

More languages please!!!I really wish I could learn to write in other languages and not just English..Version: 1.0.5

Ehh.I’ve let two little ones use this (5 & 7), and I’m a bit mixed on how I feel about it. The speaking exercises are incredibly inconsistent. For the 5 y/o, it’s expected that he should be able to immediately read and say a word that appears on the screen. The app immediately begins to listen for a response instead of allowing time to sound it out. It also accepts whatever noise it detects, even if it’s completely wrong. For the 7 y/o, it reads a sentence to him and wants him to repeat it. Not only is this not practicing reading AT ALL, but it again can’t properly depict what he’s saying and often proceeds halfway through a sentence. I tried to turn the volume down and let him actually sound it out, but since it expects immediate and perfect response, it kept marking it wrong and proceeding before he could get three words out! This is my biggest complaint by far because it makes the app fairly useless..Version: 1.96.2

Hate this now nowI am not happy because I didn’t I want to do download it download it again but it’s not worth worth it because it’s not doing it I tried to do a password or a phone number but I can’t describe it what are you what it is because I don’t know I have to tell my mum that means have a password or a phone number for you because you know you know I don’t care you know what I mean if you do go IBCs.Version: 1.53.1

Remove the errors punishment system! Was great until the introduction of the hearts system. Kids hate it..Version: 1.0.15

Nice idea and works well but...Just downloaded the app to try and give my self an educational boost with my English but I booted up the app ad selected the option indicating that I know just about every sound that’s needed and got surprised when it put me at the point where it teaches the “c” noise which confuses me because after the language app I was under the impression that there would be a pre-test that would evaluate where I am up to but am I little bit peeved to find out there wasn’t one and now have work through all the “basics”. (Ps if this is read by the Devs will there be a placement test in the future?).Version: 1.0.19

A bit misleadingI thought the app would be like the other duolingo app, enabling the learner to learn the alphabet for other languages. I am currently starting to learn Japanese and would’ve loved an app to break down the ‘hirogana’. But other wise it is lovely for children..Version: 1.0.16

A bit disappointedI’m mostly disappointed with myself for downloading it in the daytime which didn’t give me enough time to try it first before my little one discovered it on the iPad. The app isn’t bad but why on earth would you use both the letter names and the letter sounds in the same task? It’s so confusing for the little ones just starting on their learning journey. Although Maria Montessori observed 100 years ago that by teaching the phonetic sounds makes it easier for children to learn how to read and spell. Nowadays more and more studies show the same thing. So why don’t you just take out the letter names and only leave the phonetic sounds in the first few levels and introduce the letter names later on at a higher level? It would make things so much easier for little ones and set them up for success rather than them having to remember both at the same time. Just learning the alphabet song is enough for them to learn the letter names anyway so there’s no need to put so much emphasis on that. It seems quite a few people have expressed the same concerns but you’re yet to make any changes..Version: 1.85.0

Assessments not working properlyWhen my child does the tests where they need to get a certain number of ‘pancakes'/answers right, the game lets my child through to the next level even if my child gets most of the answers wrong, meaning my child ends up on new reading skills that are currently beyond their ability, thereby putting them off of this otherwise brilliant app. It’s such a shame.Version: 1.96.2

Lost all progressSince the App had a recent update and changed from the number tree to the random images and icons all the progress my daughter has made has been wiped for no reason and no way to recover it even her icon has been reset. At close to hitting lvl 100 this is very disappointing as it was target we were looking forward to reaching..Version: 1.0.30

Potentially goodThis App has very good potential and I really like the concept but if your British and want your child to learn English how it is taught in schools (phonics) this will just confuse them as the letters are pronounced (mmm) rather than (Emm) ect… I think if you’re American English this might be more beneficial, that’s why I’ve given a 2 star instead of 1 But there is a lot of potential if you add the option of British English too.Version: 1.96.2

Mmmmmm . . ........ I don’t know about thisThis could be good for younger kids but not older kids. My child wanted to take writing classes and she’s pretty advanced and she wants to get better, if it’s gonna start out with how to spell monkey I don’t think this is going to help a 10 year old. And it’s also annoying because you can’t change the language and my mom was trying to help her change the age and stuff to see if that would work but she couldn’t read it . And it’s also a good app for people learning English because now my mom knows some English so I guess it was pretty helpful but it is very annoying when you 10 year old is trying to learn new writing skills and it’s literally trying telling her to spell monkey..Version: 1.0.12

Other languages please!Great app. We love it but it would be great to have this for other languages too! At the moment it’s only a ‘Monolingo’ so I can’t give more stars. Will change to 5 stars when more languages are available. Thank you. Keep up the great work!.Version: 1.0.14

Improvements removed great features!Amazing app that my kids have been using for nearly a year now. It does a fantastic job teaching recognition by sight and sound and writing as well, but the updates -while great- removed some wonderful features. Two of which were extremely important to my kids’ usage. 1) Removed stars that tracked daily usage, which was fantastic for keeping the kids engaged daily. 2) Removed the ability to see what each level’s focus is. This is the biggest issue because now it’s impossible to go back and redo specific lessons like writing or a sight-word or just the sounds of a letter, etc. Now if you want to relearn an alphabet or sight-word or practice writing, you have to check each levels’s contents till you find what you want, then go into that level and keep checking each lesson till you find what you’re looking for… really??? That’s so lame guys, please fix it..Version: 1.69.0

Such potentialI downloaded this to see if it would be a good recommendation to make for my class while they are currently learning from home due to the pandemic. For context, I teach reception in the UK (ages 4-5 years). The app has such huge potential and I love the idea of working through the sounds in this way and the different activities linked to each one. However, if you are in the UK please be aware that your child does not learn sounds in this way at school and so it may cause some confusion. Instead, we learn sounds as their pure form only first as opposed to their letter name - such as ‘mmmm’ rather than ‘em’ - as this is more beneficial when it comes to reading whole words and spelling. Depending on your child’s school’s phonics programme they may also learn the sounds in a different order too. For the developers, it may be beneficial to have the option of a British English approach for each sound and for there to be less emphasis on the letter name right away but instead focus on the pure sounds. I will still be recommending this to my class, but for extra practice rather than as a way to learn from the beginning..Version: 1.0.28

Other languages?I would like this but in french or any other language with their own alphabet.Version: 1.0.31

Brilliant but no British accent optionEchoing others but the lack of a British accent option is a problem enough that we’ve had to drop the app even though my daughter was enjoying it and really improving her reading skills with it. Sadly it very quickly had a dramatic effect on her own accent so we’re going to have to find an alternative..Version: 1.96.2

Not the right way to teach readingAs someone who works with kids with dyslexia, I was really excited to see this app. At first glance it looks awesome - great graphics, bright colours, fun games. But its actual approach to literacy instruction is not evidence based or recommended by experts. It focusses on letter names more than the sounds, and more importantly does not choose simple words for first time English readers to decode. The first word it teaches is ‘monkey’ - a two syllable word, and both of the vowels are confusing for early readers - the ‘o’ makes an ‘u’ sound, and the ‘ee’ sound often isn’t taught until several months into learning reading. If you are looking for an app that will actually teach your child (or yourself) to read, please look into other options, like ‘teach your monster to read’..Version: 1.0.19

Please add landscape for iPadWould be a lot easier to use this in landscape on my iPad Also too repetitive to keep a kid’s attention most of the time..Version: 1.78.0

Good, but....Definitely potential for this to be a five star app. I would like a bit more customisation though. For instance, my 4 year old knows the alphabet really well - so it would be great to crank the difficulty up a notch to reduce focus on identifying individual letters and increase focus on combinations of letters and writing. I downloaded the app to a separate device to see if telling it that she was a 10 year old would make any difference, but it didn’t..Version: 1.0.11

Probably not the best review but decent enoughTo be honest I thought you could choose the language your learning and and it would teach you the most basic basics like the number, colours, alphabet and so on, that made it a little disappointing but still, I thought the monkey were cute..Version: 1.0.11

Increase languages optionI wish that this offered other languages as would wish to do it in Latin.Version: 1.0.12

3 year old loved it…. But American English…It’s such a shame as my daughter loved playing this. But knowing how my 6-year old learnt phonics at school, I won’t be letting her play this again, as I think it might be too confusing. Such a shame as could be so easily corrected with a British English version..Version: 1.53.1

Great but would love more accentsThis is a fantastic app and my daughter enjoys it and learns from it, but the American accent is so strong sometimes it doesn’t recognise my daughter when she talks or my daughter is trying to force the accent. Please PLEASE do a English/UK accent option then I would definitely give 5 stars.Version: 1.57.0

Some Inappropriate words for kidsI was really annoyed today that my child gets on to try a new level and it had her spelling the word “farts” multiple times and then another level talks about farting. Really?! Give me a break! I understand that this is not a terrible word to most, but it is one that we don’t want her using and we do not use in our house. For an app like this there's no place or need for it. Totally inappropriate for kids her age, she’s six! Thousands of descent word and you choose this one?! So moronic for adults to be putting this on this type of app. You can and need to do better!.Version: 1.96.2

Only for American EnglishThis app is a good idea, and the functionality is a great start. It’s very American, however, and desperately needs a version that won’t teach my child a pronunciation of Z that will have them mocked at school. Ideally it would be nice to have the entire app with a localization for British English..Version: 1.0.11

UghhOmg it should add more features i used to like to play with my moms but now I aint.Version: 1.96.2

This was great! Now crashes and expels you from the app...Would’ve given 5 stars but crashes on Monkey square before stage 3! Shame.. hopefully it will be fixed. Have a disappointed 4 year old.Version: 1.0.8

Unauthorized chargesThe same day I downloaded this app I’ve been charged nearly $40 for 3 transactions by a “VIBER EUR LUXEMBOURG” without my authorization..Version: 1.48.0

RussianPlease add alphabet for different languages!.Version: 1.0.31

MORE LANGUAGESI’m learning japanese and i would love if it offered more languages, giving 3 star bc i have not tried it yet.Version: 1.42.0

Other languages? When will you have more languages? Like dutch.Version: 1.0.30

Wrong answerOn the first lesson there is a book called mad monkeys in the book, a cow comes up and says moo and after it asked you what animal says moo the right answer is cows, but everyone knows pig the says moo.Version: 1.96.2

Great app but…My child love learning with this app, but ever since the last update it keep crashing. please fix!!!.Version: 1.54.0

You might want to read before downloadI’m 13 my little sister is 8 and uses this app I asked her can I check it out and she’s like ye that’s fine here so I went to level 10 and I hade to fill in a blank and the first two were fine like fill in the blank for thank you so ____h or your so ki__ but then it got weird like where’s the mil_ or get a new b__ty that’s big and I was speechless I moved on and I read a book and it hade skeletons and zombies? For 3-5 year olds I don’t think they should have that in there kinds yet especially before bed after that I finessed the book and I was like let’s just find something that’s normal cause this is awful 😩 I tried the thing we’re you have to LISTEN UP (why in caps tho) and I saw words like bu*p and po*p which I thing is kinda inappropriate anyways I showed my mom and she was like OMG 😳 I’m deleting this so she did that’s and that was the end of this game.Version: 1.96.0

My daughter found it rather boringMy daughter loves the look of the advert so I downloaded it for her and the j out our ages and my email she did one quiz and found it not fun at all please let there be like learning colours as your draw or something to Make it more fun.Version: 1.48.0

Good but has bugsWe loved playing this with my 3 year old until it stopped saving our progress. We’ve been stuck on 10 stars for a couple weeks. Doesn’t save when we finish and we have to redo the same exercises. Pretty frustrating for a previously great app..Version: 1.0.18

Great but now stuck at the endMy three year old has finished what’s available. He loved it but remains disappointed at the ‘more coming soon’ image he sees every day when he checks it..Version: 1.0.12

Different languagesI was just hoping it provided the ability to learn different languages for kids in a fun and interactive way. This only has English as an option..Version: 1.96.2

Great app butThis app is great. My son already knew his letter sounds before using this app and I wanted him to Kearny he names of the sounds as well in a fun way that also reviewed the sounds. This app is great for that. The only thing that I have a problem with is the fact that there isn’t more settings for parents to choose what the child should or shouldn’t learn. We don’t do sight words in our learning because we have seen the studies showing that phonics is more effective than sight words. I wish I could turn off the sight word setting on this app. I wish there was more I could do as the parent to see what my child will learn and more I could do to change the settings in the app and learning he is doing..Version: 1.95.0

Problems with microphone even on different devicesIt is a fantastic app but very frustrating when we can’t sort out the problems with the app not picking up our voices. We thought it was a problem with our iPad but seems to be happening across different devices..Version: 1.0.11
