Assemble with Care for Negative User Reviews

Okay.I skipped all the text and story because... I play games for GAMES. The puzzles, in this context, were okay-ish. I never quite had fun but felt on the cusp of it. The puzzles never actually require any thought and are more about keeping your fingers busy, which can be a bit zen. This isn’t a game about figuring out how things work, but just taking them apart and putting them back together. It’s enjoyable, but I would have preferred more analysis segments where you have to, for instance, figure out what wiring parts control which functions. So, in short, to win me over this game would have had to drop all the story garbage and focus on harder puzzles. The actual graphics and interface are great though. If you like a focus on pretentious multimedia experiences, this may be up your alley though..Version: 1.0.9

Nice puzzles, meh story, very short.I like the idea of this game, I like the idea behind the story but it really didn't work for me. It felt like the story was mostly telling me how to feel instead of showing me, and the characters didn't have much depth to them, which may be because the game was too short to get to know them and be invested in their story. The puzzles' interface is well designed and polished, which makes taking things apart and putting them back together satisfying. But the puzzles themselves are too simple, maybe because there are so few there isn't time to build up complexity..Version: 1.1.4

Nice premise but…I like the idea but the game is not much of a game. Most of the time is spent hearing about some completely unrealistic melodramatic story (generally some big family drama fixed by putting back together the pieces of a broken music box or something like that). The graphic style is nice and so is the idea of fixing objects, but the puzzles are way too easy and not challenging at all, and there is very few of them. The game is way too short and it feels more like a demo than like an actually paid for game (although through Apple Arcade and not directly). It really has a big potential but it should be three times as long, with much less ‘story’ (or at least a better one) and the puzzles should be harder..Version: 1.0.9

There’s no depth to gameplay or storyEven as a short diversion I was losing interest before it was done. Like many Apple Arcade games, it’s a pleasant feeling incomplete idea for a game. The presentation is good. I think people will find connection with the story. But it’s more like a movie trailer, using simple manipulation to get past the lack of details. To some extent I felt the voice of the main character was telling me how emotional the story was rather than making me feel that. The most complicated of the puzzles were still very simple. The control is OK for what it is, but starts to falter at the moment the player can do something wrong. Because the player can rarely do anything wrong it doesn’t do much to get in the way. The biggest challenge I had was during the record player because the wires weren’t behaving the way I expected, not connecting to the holes, and the solution was that they suddenly started working. There was room for an actual puzzle game, but it appears they decided that they didn’t want people to get stuck, so it’s more of a pop-up book. You could so worse than downloading it as an Apple Arcade game, but you won’t remember it..Version: 1.1.4

HELP!This game is really relaxing and enjoyable to play, but when I reached chapter 7 I had trouble with the watch cogs. I was trying to fix Joseph’s watch, but I couldn’t figure out where to put the cogs. I’m still stuck on chapter 7, so please help! Thanks for reading Audrey.Version: 1.3.3

Lost potential.I’m quite sad to be writing this review, but I hope the devs see it and consider my thoughts. First, the mechanics are really enjoyable. Its relaxing and fun. So kudos on that. There’s a real feeling of picking up each item and tinkering with it. It reminded me of Gone Home quite a bit. However, I honestly can’t stand the story or main character. I think a lot more could be achieved by allowing a “Skip Story” option, or an option to create your own character. The dialogue and story almost immediately became pages of me skipping between the actual game. It started to feel like a non-arcade game in which I simply turn away from the screen between actions because of advertisements..Version: 1.0.9

Needs more contentWhile I enjoyed this game, it really is way too short. Also I found the puzzles in rebuilding the items way too easy. It’s around an hour of gameplay, if that. Here’s hoping the developers add more to the story and increase the challenge level..Version: 1.0.9

Cool idea, love the mechanics, calling it a game is generous. This is an incredibly relaxing and enjoyable experience. The idea of taking things apart and reassembling them is very interesting and fun. However the challenge mechanic of the game is just not directly telling you what to do and waiting for the player to figure it out. There is no way to lose or influence the progression of the story whatsoever. Its an odd mismatch of picture book read-along with periodic game play that is impossible to lose. In one level involving the making of soup I went back and intentionally tried to fail as it is the only section that allows for choice and even my soup of a head of broccoli and a stick of butter was "the best food ever made" despite totally ignoring the recipe. This could all be redeemed by how enjoyable it is to take apart diagnose and reassemble things but with only 11 true levels each buried in two to three minute read along adventures, this app leaves you wishing it had been more. The potential and concept of this app are really neat but unfortunately the game itself rarely lives up to them..Version: 1.0.9

Short, dull, maybe a little full of itselfLet me start by saying the idea for this game is cool: repairing little gadgets for people as a globetrotting kid trying to find herself. Where this falls flat is in the execution. The actual repair gameplay is promising, but tops out over the course of 11 puzzles at a level of complexity matched by puzzle books for elementary students. Meanwhile, the devs thought they were being insightful by presenting each puzzle with a mediocre framing device centering around one of a couple of unbelievably trope-laden stories, switching between them from puzzle to puzzle. It all comes across as depressingly typical and without any real substance. Nothing about it is particularly bad, mind you, but there’s also nothing that stands out, besides the initial delight of disassembling something, only for that delight to become disappointment as the game ends without ever feeling like it lived up to its full potential. My hope is that a developer who’s more focused on making a game rather than a hopelessly forgettable short story will pick up this idea and make something worth the effort. At least I didn’t have to directly pay for this. Thanks, Apple GamePassAccessNowArcadeFlix..Version: 1.0.9

LackingI should preface this by saying that I’m not opposed to text-heavy games. I like the occasional visual novel and point-and-click adventure game. I downloaded this because the reviews were positive, it looked visually appealing from the screenshots, and I was in the mood for a game where you take apart broken things and put them back together in order to repair them. After playing it to completion, I can say the game is aesthetically pleasing, especially the repair gameplay segments. And the repair segments, for the most part, had satisfying gameplay. But there really are too few of them. To feel like a full-fledged game, it could use two to three times as many of the repair puzzles, and they need to continue increasing in complexity. The story, which made up the bulk of the game, was difficult to get invested in. I didn’t care about the characters, and, like a Hallmark Channel movie, the outcome seemed all too predictable from the get-go. After the first couple of chapters, I turned off the spoken dialogue because there was already text on the screen, and if the text is going to be read, I may as well read it myself. I wish, if they were going to tell a story with this, that the story snippets were shorter, and that there were more of them, but organically sprinkled throughout a longer campaign. Having played this, I now just really want to find a different game that focuses on repairing broken objects..Version: 1.0.9

This game bored me to tearsI keep on seeing great reviews for this game (on and off Apple Arcade), but for the life of me I just can’t get into it. I’ve gotten through the first 4-6 puzzles and I don’t see how anyone above the age of 7 can be entertained by this. (I say the first 4-6 puzzles because it bores me so much that I can’t remember and I have zero interest in reopening the app to check.) The story which everyone lauds seems run-of-the-mill and I legitimately think the creators of the game got ripped off by the person they employed to write it. Like I bet if you look into the story creator’s work history you’ll see it littered with countless Napoleon Hill-esque scams. (Oh, you didn’t realize Napoleon Hill was a fraud? Pop those terms into Google and see what comes up.) This game leaves me feeling like a moron because for the life of me I can’t see what so so so many others see in it..Version: 1.0.9

More of a book than game.Very short, simple puzzles, and a LOT of reading to no real purpose. Made me feel like i had another job..Version: 1.3.3

Too shortThe story was good but I wish it was longer and they had more viewpoints. Gameplay was fun and you could play this for maybe a short plane ride but I completed it within an hour..Version: 1.3.3

Charming little gameFirst off I would like to say this game is thoroughly relaxing with a beautiful art style, story and setting. The user interface and animation is extremely smooth and well done, with a nice handy touch where the screwdriver auto connects to the screws. My only issue with the game is that it holds your hand a bit too much with regards to clearly highlighting/snapping what to put where, this took away much of the challenge when working on puzzles like the watch which would have otherwise been an interesting challenge. However that being said the final level (epilogue) was a fantastic brain teaser! It hardly held your hand and you could make many mistakes before figuring out where the pieces of the puzzle went. If the developers built there next game with that level of complexity it would be perfect. Good game guys, you should be proud..Version: 1.9.45

Great potential but weak storyThis game is great to play and work through although very easy, too easy in fact. I don’t think this game needed the heavy story with it, it’s not anything to remember in fact. It’s nice to have the story play out a little while playing but I feel like the developers thought they had a better story than what’s actually there. It’s very disconnected from what the game could be. I think it would of been much nicer to have a larger focus on the puzzle and solving elements instead of the story..Version: 1.0.9

Focus more on puzzles than storyI am enjoying this but I find it comprises of 50% puzzle solving and 50% story which I don’t find particularly immersive or meaningful. I would’ve preferred having lots of different people instead of it focusing on a select few that keep needing help and telling me their life story. Little things that annoyed me were the fact you had to keep picking up the screw driver for each screw and the main character interjecting when you’re nearly finished or figuring out the sequence as the text covers a big portion of the screen and stops you from picking up items. I play a game to distract myself not remind myself of my own family issues such as sibling conflict and a lost parent which is what this mainly focuses on. It needs to be more light hearted..Version: 1.3.3

Rather Short - But You Should Still Play ItThe story is touching and moving and brought me to tears. The idea of fixing broken objects was masterfully done. The art is simplistic and yet beautiful. It is perfectly written story. However, this game is incredibly short. It took me less than an hour to play through the entire game with the story included. It’s feels fulfilling, yet at the end of it all, there’s still something lacking. Do I regret spending an hour of my time on this? No. Not in the slightest but I’m yearning for more. This morning, I found myself wishing that the story started at the beginning of Maria’s adventure and that we could see the events and feelings that drove her from her home and family in search of what laid beyond the confines of her tiny world. At the end, I wished we could hear how the conversation with her parents went and followed her on her journey home to the antique store. Should you play this game? Absolutely. It’s masterful story telling. The mechanics are satisfying. The drive to repair things once broken is magnificently brought to life. But there must be more chapters to this. Each one a stamp on her passport as we watch her grow and learn what really matters in life..Version: 1.1.4

Don’t understand the hypeI honestly don’t get the hype. This is an extremely basic puzzle game with 11 “puzzles”, and a fairly cliched story that takes about as long as the puzzles do. To top it off, this won’t even launch if you’re not connected to the internet, so forget about trying to play it on a plane or if you’re overseas without roaming..Version: 1.0.9

Absolutely loved thisThis game helped me so much to take my mind of some stuff in my life. The puzzles are so relaxing (im fed up of every puzzle game being difficult), none of it is difficult in anyway and thats how some games should be, it’s a story driven game and the puzzles are meant for relaxing not frustrating. Theres a reviewer down below who seems to think that every puzzle should be made harder, nope, there's plenty of other puzzle games out there if you want that, go find them please. Don’t take away such a relaxing experience and make it harder like so many other puzzle games. One other thing was the sound design. The sounds and voices in this game were amazing and everything sounded clear and crisp to the ears. I just really wish it was longer. Edit: just been reading about the developers ustwo firing one of the core developers of this game for supporting workers rights so im knocking off a star because thats disgusting. Ustwo have put out some bogus statement on their twitter but im not buying it. Hope they get taken to trial. Shame, i thought they were a good company but looks like not..Version: 1.0.9

Super short but fun while it lastedThe gameplay itself is fun. The puzzles could be a little more challenging, as I finished all 11 puzzles in under an hour, but they were entertaining. The story is what it is. I would have preferred to get a splash screen that setup the next item instead of buzzing through a children’s book trying to get to the next puzzle. I just really didn’t care about the globetrotting tinkerer and her interactions with people, read to me like I’m sitting in story-time at the local library. If you’re shooting for the 10 and under crowd maybe put a disclaimer on the app page or move it to the kids section. If there is a second version in the works, I would suggest (1) at least twice the puzzles, (2) more complicated puzzles as the game progresses, (3) less story, (4) no narration..Version: 1.0.9

The story was so cornyI liked repairing stuff but the story was saccharine..Version: 1.3.3

Just... mediocreI’m not gonna say it’s a bad game but it just has the potential to be so much more. from the pictures (especially the app picture) it looks like it’s going to be some kind of mystery where you figure things out via fixing things. instead it’s just an incredibly boring story that falls hard on saying things rather than telling them. all the characters just,, say things all the time rather than leaving it to the player to work out themself. i almost hate the game just because so much could be done with this format, finding and fixing broken things would be a great way of getting to know a stranger long lost to time. don’t make me physically talk to some random father who gives me his whole sordid backstory of losing his wife and having to raise his kid. show me his watch, show me a rusty “i love you” engraved in the back, show me leather worn thin from wearing it so much. that speaks so much more powerfully than words. show me things from these people but don’t show the people, let us infer from the objects themselves and come to our own conclusions about their lives and relationships. it’s painful how overdone it is, the dialogue honestly feels like it was written by a child who’s never heard of subtlety.Version: 1.3.3
