The Criterion Channel for Negative User Reviews

Great and NotThe Criterion Channel’s selection of classic and art films is worthy of 5 stars. I had no issues searching for titles and exploring the catalog. It was exciting to have found, at last, a streaming service with movies I actually want to see and can download and watch offline. And that’s where this app falls woefully short—-offline viewing. Every film that I’ve downloaded to watch offline has randomly frozen then restarted, sometimes all the way back to the beginning of the film. Freeze, restart, 10 minutes of film then freeze, restart, 3 minutes of playback then freeze, restart back at the beginning. There are no real viewing controls available other than the slide bar so there is no way to easily resume or scroll back 10 seconds or so. I reported the freeze issues to the developers who, much to my surprise, have been super-responsive, suggesting workarounds and following up with me, so 5 stars for support, but the problem persists. I find all of this puzzling—you would think a video playback application to be a no-brainer. I download and watch films using my public library’s app all the time and playback is always perfect. I won’t be signing up for Criterion Channel after the trial period because at this point in time films downloaded for offline viewing do not playback properly..Version: 5.501

Really good but could be greatThey hit the nail on the head in many ways but also fail miserably in others. I am leaving a review like this (with room to improve) that will hopefully be read by them so they can change a few things to make this truly a best of the best movie viewing platform. They obviously offer some of the best movies on planet earth and that is the main draw as well as the uber high quality in which they release their movies. A major issue on their app/platform is the searching capabilities which are atrocious. Yes you can break it down by year/genres/director etc but they need to do a much much better job with the search capabilities as a whole. One such improvement would be to show films that I might like based on my personal viewing habits or personal tastes. I also feel every single movie on here needs to have a trailer that you can view prior to making the movie selection for each night. These are just a few suggestions among many others. Overall wonderful platform for some of the best cinema available but there is definitely room for making this much much better and that comes from me which is a humongous fan of Criterion!.Version: 5.610

Please make this site more compatible/adaptable.Decent Selection, but the fact that I cannot project onto external monitors/screens, as I can with ease on other streaming sites, is extremely inconvenient. Forced to watch everything on a Smart phone....Version: 5.901.1

Rating the app, not the contentThe way pages on the Criterion channel site display on an iPad is utterly and totally maddening. It’s a band down the middle of the screen and as you scroll if you happen to touch the screen outside of that band on either side it disappears. I’ve been using this app since day one and I cannot get used to it. What is the purpose of having a screen full of information display only at the centre of the iPad screen? Please change this. I beg you!.Version: 8.402.1

InterruptionInterrupted all the time with my Apple TV v2. No Criterion apps appears in the list of Appletv menu. Need to play the movie with my iPhone and interrupts each time my phone going on sleep mode. It’s very bad experience to try to watch a movie. Sorry I like Criterion Collection and the choice but software wize it’s not ready..Version: 4.920.3

Great content! Poor app...I am absolutely in love with the content this platform has to offer, such great classics! However, I can’t say as much about the app. The navigation is very unpractical, casting to my Google Chrome is hell and it keeps crashing. I once read how the best movies in the world were stuck on the worst app in the world, and unfortunately, I have to agree!.Version: 6.120.3

BufferingAfter two days of buffering issues it’s clear I won’t be staying on for a monthly subscription. Incredible selection of films wasted. I don’t know if it’s Vimeo or what, but I recommend looking into it..Version: 5.610

Doesn’t work with projectorsVery disappointed in this. I signed up for a year subscription only to find out that, unlike every other streaming service on the planet (HBO, Kanopy, Netflix, Youtube, Apple, etc.), Criterion Channel's app does not allow you to plug your iPhone into a projector to watch on the big screen. Tells me I'm trying to "mirror" and gives me an error. Their FAQ is useless and 24 hours later during weekdays, support gives no response. So frustrating..Version: 8.402.1

Hard to browse; playback interruptionsThe interface feels as if it's missing a tab... On the main page, the curation of the content is intrusive and makes it difficult to browse. I used Filmstruck until it got shut down, and in that app it was a lot easier to navigate: I could simply scroll through the entire collection, or browse by director for example. Beyond navigation, performance is also lacking. Watching through my Roku, the film was interrupted multiple times by a loading screen which lasted for several seconds. When the film resumed playing, the resolution was extremely low, probably around 480p, and it took minutes for it to return to normal. This continued to happen even with the internet cable plugged directly into the Roku (and my internet connection was fine) and really ruined the experience. Thankfully the latest update brought Chromecast support, so I will switch to that and see if things improve..Version: 4.941

So disappointed. This is a messWhen Criterion announces their streaming service I signed up as a charter member on day one. The day the app went live I was there. I was ready. Then I was extremely disappointed. I’m only going to say what so many others have said in these reviews and what Criterion keeps ignoring apparently. No full list of every title. They instead gave us a list on a separate website?! Then I use that list to add all the titles I’m interested in. Look at the list, switch back to the app, search the app, add the film. This literally took me 90 minutes to do. Then I realized that there was a limit to how many films could be in your wishlist! Are you kidding me?! So half the titles I added pushed out/deleted the other half. Add to this the horrible, almost unusable interface and search function and I sadly deleted my membership and the app. Over the past two months I come here and check the release notes to see if these things have been corrected. Nope. Criterion doesn’t seem to care. As the developers of this app they have the ability to read the reviews here and add their own response. But they don’t. I suppose the reason why is because they have no intention of improving this app. Which is sad. I am a huge fan of film and the criterion collection. It’s been painful to watch this company sabotage it’s own product and ignore user complaints and concerns..Version: 4.943
