Monarch: Budget & Track Money for Positive User Reviews

How is this not more widely known?!I don’t think I’ve ever written an App Store review. I just downloaded this software last night and I’m obsessed. I’ve been looking at different budgeting software for about a week now, and before then was always open to it, but nothing ever seemed better than my spreadsheet. Other apps are very invasive and also force you to budget in a way that feels extremely manual. Monarch allows you to look at your month as a whole, while also having the flexibility to correctly categorize, split, and even hide transactions from your monthly spending reports. This is awesome for splitting restaurant or grocery tabs and omitting your friend’s tab from yours. Onto the design - the app is so intuitive and easy to understand. I opened it up and the Onboarding experience was so simple and delightful that I spent a couple of hours getting everything set up. Navigating the platform is really a delightful experience. The dashboard for your net worth, goals, transactions, etc. is customizable. I also love that they have a “feature request” option on the menu and are open to hearing customers’ feedback. I’ll be purchasing the annual plan shortly. Awesome app!.Version: 1.0.45

So Far So Good!I had to find an alternative to Personal Capital after they rarely updated their tools. So far, Monarch is a fantastic app for viewing net worth and budgeting. I can even keep my home value from Zillow on here and put receipts to transactions. Quick Request: The iPad app, specifically the 12.9 inch Pro, has alot of empty horizontal space. I’d love to see the 2 column approach to display data like you have on the web app. ALSO: make dark and light mode changeable within the app, independent of OS-wide settings; i prefer the white background in monarch but prefer to keep my phone in dark mode..Version: 1.0.116

Best Money App HandsdownDefinitely one of the best finance apps out there, especially for households/couples. It’s super customisable which I love and also has really impactful advice/guidance which is something I didn’t even know I needed in a finance app. They also have a pretty significant help center and are constantly improving the system, which I appreciate. The only con I would say is that sometimes there is some difficulty with keeping accounts linked, but overall it’s a pretty simple process to re-sync them. And since Monarch probably offers the most robust/diverse selection of accounts to sync in, it’s definitely a con I’m willing to live with. I’ve tried a lot of finance apps, but Monarch is definitely the best!!.Version: 1.0.153

Incredible Mint replacementI was shocked when Mint said they were shutting down— been using them for years. Saw Monarch on a reddit post from one of the founders where he explained why they made monarch in the first place. My girlfriend and I decided to give it a try before the actual mint shutdown happened so we could try a few different budget apps before the end of the year. Not gonna need to. Monarch is honestly incredible. It addresses so many of the problems I had with mint and offers a few other features I didn’t even know I wanted. The interface is great. The mobile/app view is great (especially compared to Mint’s). And best of all it doesn’t try to sell me life insurance every five minutes. I’d give this six stars if I could..Version: 1.0.162

What we should expectIf you are a former mint user, this should feel right at home. Don’t be surprised if most of it seems borrowed, as that former product ownership is leading the charge. That isn’t a bad thing. I think Monarch closes some gaps too with a better full picture perspective of your cash flow and complete money breakdown. It is much more expensive than free, so don’t even compare that perspective. I do think the platform is more robust and reliable with its connections and multi-device usability. If you compare to Quicken Simplifi, connection compatibility is far better. If you compare to co-pilot, they may seem similar, but Monarch does let you do household management. UI is subjective, so you should compare different products if you find anything an absolute deal breaker. Overall, Monarch is easy to navigate and feels intuitive. Goals still feel a bit awkward if you are familiar with Mint, but you can now attribute transactions to goals, which makes them a bit more intuitive. The fact you need to attribute accounts to drive the behavior seems limiting at times, and forces an “envelop budgeting” feel. At this point, it seems like the best available option, if your budget allows for it. If you are hands on with your money management, this shouldn’t disappoint..Version: 1.0.162

Great budgeting and net worth appI rarely if ever leave reviews but I wanted to let other people know that Monarch is a very user friendly, robust system. I was a Mint user and since then have been looking for a solution that would A) actually sync all my transactions from my Canadian account without using Plaid B) Connect to Wealthsimple C) Track net worth along with budgeting and so far Monarch has been the only one to check all those boxes. Excited to see what improvements come around in the future.Version: 1.0.170

Best Mint AlternativeTried several apps since Mint shutdown, but this one stands out the most and the one one worth the annual subscription. Really impressed with their continued efforts for UI improvements, reporting, and Canadian Banks connectivity..Version: 1.0.185

Glad I found a Mint alternativeI’ve found this app to be more capable than Mint but also very familiar so it was an easy transition. I love being able to assign items for my wife to review, instead of having to remember to ask her about them, or texting her screenshots of transactions to find out what they are. The app itself is very responsive and easy to use and customize. The only confusing thing I ran into was that a transaction needs to be applied to a goal, whereas in mint, it would automatically happen based on the account the goal was associated with. But I actually like this better because now a goal doesn’t need its own bank account. The only improvement I would make, and maybe I just need to understand this better, for a loan such as a mortgage it would be great if the amount that applies to the Principal can go towards your net worth, but not the monthly budget..Version: 1.0.162

Great ToolGreat tool to replace Mint. Much better integrations and interface. Perfect solution..Version: 1.0.177

Excited there is another option that cares for you as a customerI’ve been a mint user for many years, and honestly was never satisfied with support and the direction of the product. Monarch from day one treats me like the customer and unlike mint, not as the product they want to sell too. This model works better, and I’m looking forward to their growth and improvement on what’s so far a very impressive alternative..Version: 1.0.164

Loved Mint, trying to see bright side with MonarchI was heartbroken to learn Mint is shuttering. I have used Mint for many years and know it well despite all its quirks. I did find Monarch relatively easy to set up on the accounts side. Net worth transition was challenging though, and the CSV format required doesn’t match what is exported from Mint, so custom reformatting of every CSV is required. Seems like a missed opportunity with how hard they are advertising to ex-Minters. I also find the lack of visualization options on mobile very frustrating. The web Sankey diagrams and ability to look at multiple time horizons for net worth are super valuable. I would like the option to add them to my dashboard and/or generate my own views on mobile if these aren’t supported. But, it does what I need. And I did get ~all my info transferred over after a few hours..Version: 1.0.162

Best, Intuitive Budgeting AppI love Monarch! I have tried several of the main competitors’ budgeting software, and I never stuck to them because they were difficult to use and hard to track your spending in real time. Monarch is SO easy to set up, intuitively laid out (both their website and app), and I love that it reminds you to check your budget as well as notifies you when you exceed the set amount for a category. I could go on, but you get the point. This is the BEST budgeting app out there! Worth every penny, and has helped me save..Version: 1.0.59

Better than MintI’m actually glad that Mint is shutting down because Monarch is MUCH better. I heard about it on Reddit because none of the other top-rated money apps worked as well as Mint. After some really frustrating trials with other apps, I went looking for something else. Interface is awesome, customer service actually follows up in person, and the price is right. I hope that Monarch gets a lot of 5 star reviews and takes over. It is by far the strongest competitor in this space..Version: 1.0.162

The app I’ve been looking for!I recently migrated over from Mint. At first, I was sad about the move. However, I’ve been using Monarch for a few days and OH MY GOD. It’s everything mint never was. It has completely filled in all the gaps. It’s extremely intuitive. And easy to pick up and use. I am more and more impressed. Literally everything you were ever wanted in a budget app. Hindsight is always 2020. You never know what you’re missing out on until you’re on the other side..Version: 1.0.161

Great UXLoving this app so far. The experience is great. Disconnecting bank accounts is not ideal but seems like a bank issue not a Monarch issue. I would like to see more options to manage a household, so that each member could have their own private views while contributing to a shared household. Currently requires two accounts and some manual accounting. But the current experience makes that feasible and I’m hopeful in the future of this service. Thanks..Version: 1.0.181

Best VisualsI've tried a bunch of apps since Mint announced they were shutting down. While Monarch does connecting issues with many Canadian institutions, the visuals really make up for that. It is the only one that is actually an overall improvement over what I had before..Version: 1.0.177

Love it!I begrudgingly came over from mint when I learned they were shutting down. I wasn’t looking forward to learning a new software and even less happy about having to pay for it. But monarch has blown me away! It’s so easy to learn and use, so much more user friendly than mint. Their customer service is top notch and has responded quickly to my two inquiries. I don’t mind at all to pay for a superior service!.Version: 1.0.162

Like Mint, but without the ads!I decided to try Monarch based off of a few other comments as well as the very pretty UI — happy to report that this is virtually the same as Mint, which is also popular, but without the constant barrage of ads that you get in Mint. I paid for a year with their current promotion and will be using this to serve as my own financial advisor for some time - please please please never go ad-supported like Mint! The ads and constant promotional pop ups are nauseating..Version: 1.0.10

It’s awesomeMonarch is legit the most user friendly budget app out there. I love being active in our household budget and seeing where my wife and I are at has been a game changer for us financially. I submitted a request for my main credit card bank to be added (mid florida credit union) and hope it will be in the near future. In the mean time I just manually add in the charges which isn’t a big deal. I use this app daily and recommend it for anyone..Version: 1.0.39

Really Great All in One Finance AppI love this app and used Copilot for awhile. I made the switch to monarch after my fiancé and I wanted to see our financial health in a better picture. The household feature is awesome! However - please please please can you make it to where the household has the joint accounts and then each person has their own separate views of their checking, and budgets and transactions. This is the only thing keeping me from giving a 5 star review.Version: 1.0.162

Getting much betterI was in the somewhat early beta of monarch off the wait list and it was pretty stripped down. You could see the vision for a super-clean subscription pfm app, but they weren’t there yet on features. Now… iPad app. Zillow integration for home values, crypto features. Much more transparency around account connection states, which generally work well. I love the monthly lookback feature to see my progress. They have achieved a UI where they can add features without it feeling cluttered, and they’re adding away, generally with high quality stuff. Happily paying the sub..Version: 1.0.50

Switched from Mint and very happy so farAfter using Mint for 12 years, I decided to look for something different. I did a lot of research on the current personal finance app landscape and opened up “trial” accounts with about 5 different apps, and Monarch was by far my favorite. 1. Great UX with a clean, pretty, modern UI 2. No ads or having my data sold 3. An app that has tablestake features such as the ability to review transactions (how does Mint still not have this???) 4. Zero-sum budgeting 5. Responsive customer support 6. Open and public product roadmap with the ability to submit and upvote feature requests 7. Auto-categorization that is highly accurate Additionally, I looked up a lot of their team members on LinkedIn and was happy to see that almost all of them have been there for a long time (pretty uncommon these days in the startup world), plus the CEO is ex-Mint and led their Product team before the Intuit acquisition. The main “con” that stands out to me is price (Monarch is on the pricey side compared to the competition), but in the grand scheme of things $90 a year is doable for me if it means I don’t have to feel the frustrations I felt with Mint (I spend more than that a night at bars). Really happy so far that I made the change and looking forward to seeing how the app evolves..Version: 1.0.115

Taking personal finance to the next level :)I’ve been using this for a few days now and would say it’s a nice alternative to Mint that has more focus on cash flows and categorizing transaction to better understand your monthly income vs expenses, and helps you budget against them. I really like the monthly summary page, in addition to the ability to quickly see category spend and allocate against it. I personally have a bit of an interest in the space and use Mint and Personal Capital currently, in addition to aggregating my accounts via Bank of America and Chase as well. I am always curious to test out different features, and help me understand financial picture including investments and RSUs and such — and this app seems to “just get it”. I am quite impressed in first few days of use and will definitely be shifting more of my focus from Other apps to this..Version: 1.0.6

What mint could of been if it was on a pay modelAs title says.Version: 1.0.179

Best alternative to MintI must say I was hesitant at the beginning. Couldn’t figure out how to sync my Canadian institutions/banks. Once I figured it all out and synced most of my 20+ family accounts, I really started to see the full benefits of this app. The visuals are great, most of my sync are done automatically which is a huge improvement from Mint where I had to re-connect all of the time. After trying a few other alternatives, I was starting to get discourage and thinking I would never find an alternative. I’ve been using this app for 2 months and really happy that I was able to find not only an alternative but an improvement from Mint..Version: 1.0.179

Deserves a chanceI love monarch so far, although I am annoyed that they made an update last Friday for the Amex sync and at least for me it broke. But all the other accounts are fine. I moved it from mint and monarch is mint on steroids when it comes to goals and budgeting. They allow customization beautifully, and you can use the same account for different goals. Love it! So besides the Amex issue, everything else is really well made! Hope they fix that soon!.Version: 1.0.158

5/5 on every regardSince leaving Mint, I continuously get impressed by this platform.Version: 1.0.181

Best budgeting app out thereConverted from using Mint, which has been stale since the Intuit acquisition years ago. Monarch can sync with nearly all of my financial institutions, and has a clean, simple, and enjoyable user experience. I upgraded from a trial to a monthly, then to an annual. This is the sweet spot of functionality, usability, and price. While most of my individual financial institutions have budget apps, Monarch does a better job aggregating my assets into a big picture and keeping it simple. Highly recommend!.Version: 1.0.111

The perfect way to manage my financials and I can tell they’re actively working to make it better!I’ve tried several financial apps and this is by far the best and most integrated one. All of my accounts seamlessly connect (although I wish they would update faster). I use the iOS app and the browser version on my iPad. I hope they release an iPad version soon. The UI and product experience is great, although I do wish that they made the “planning” experience feel a bit more intuitive and structured. I found it difficult to understand how to set my budgets and where to compare what my typical spending for each expense type was. Even though that was part of the process it wasn’t immediately apparent how to set things and what they meant. It’s still a better experience than any of the other apps I’ve tried. I really like that I can add my fiancé and that we can both begin to see how our combined financials look like. I like that they show what features they are currently working on and allow users to provide input directly. I look forward to using Monarch and to see them improve on an already great experience..Version: 1.0.24

Best App Out ThereMy wife and I started using Monarch in March 2023. We’ve loved it. Previously we used mint and ynab but they always felt high friction. What makes Monarch amazing is that it just works… exactly how you think it will. It’s quick, and it’s easy. Only things that could be better is that sometimes our connections to our investment accounts don’t sync even when we trigger a sync. Besides that, flawless..Version: 1.0.161

Best Money Management App YetMonarch is an amazing tool! It fulfills all my requirements with its user-friendly interface that is neither confusing nor cluttered. I've tried using EveryDollar, Quicken for Mac, Mint, and spreadsheets to track my finances. Honestly, they all fall short. Each one has its strengths, but they all lack something important or poorly implement certain features (such as confusing interfaces, etc.). EveryDollar excels at budgeting, while Mint is great for long-term tracking of net worth, spending, and trends. However, Mint's budgeting side and the continuity between its website and iOS app are terrible. Monarch, on the other hand, combines the best features of Mint and EveryDollar. I have never come across a budgeting platform (they call it planning) that is so well-designed. Dealing with money apps has always been incredibly frustrating for me, but I truly believe that Monarch is going to change that..Version: 1.0.131

Good all around money appLike many we have tried Mint, YNAB, Everydollar, and a few others. They all have decent features but for one reason or another lack something. The UI of Monarch is great, adding accounts is a breeze. Our one complaint is that it is hard to track our monthly budget on the app and how we are doing to our target. Not sure if this is a legal limitation or something else that is holding back the team. Net worth tracking is great as well..Version: 1.0.58

QuestradeReally like the app and good replacement for mint users, but really can’t emphasize enough the importance of have QUESTRADE CONNECTION FOR CANADIANS. That’s probably one of the most important brokerages for Canadian DIY investors and I suspect that’s a large portion of Canadian personal finance app users..Version: 1.0.185

Excellent Alternative to MintI have been using mint for over 10 years. Last year I bean searching for alternatives because I was growing tired of all the ads placed within the version and if I was going to be paying for something I wanted to be sure I was getting the best value. I ended up trying Copilot for the past year. At first I thought I would delete my Mint account, but I found Copilot was missing enough features that I hung onto my mint account. Well, with the announcement of the shutting down of Mint, I decided to give Monarch a try. Let’s just say I deleted my Mint account within just a few hours of trying Monarch, it had everything I needed. Besides credit monitoring, Monarch is the best alternative to Mint!.Version: 1.0.162

This a great app for managing my money!I’m an ex Mint user in Canada and started looking for a replacement app after I got the news couple of weeks ago. I tried a few apps but nothing jumped at me until I tried Monarch. The one month free trial and 50% off for ex Minters was a great incentive and already in a few days I had decided that this is it! Can’t wait to see what’s coming but this is way better than Mint ever was. I’ll even be able to get rid of my Quicken and hopefully, in future, a bill tracking app I’m using. Awesome job on Monarch!! I’m sold!!.Version: 1.0.173

Finances CAN be fun! Finally, a personal finance app that is fun, intuitive, beautifully designed, and simple to set up. I LOVE having the ability to set financial goals and contribute to them— based on a done-for-you calculation of how much savings you have left at the end of each month after covering expenses. I also love the ability to create rules and automations that auto-magically categorize transactions into the correct buckets for you. The free plan has all the essentials you need, but I quickly upgraded to premium features because I fell in love with the whole experience. Highly recommend!.Version: 1.0.80

Best financial app!I love this app and have been using it since beta. It’s changed the way I’ve kept track of money. Having all my accounts in one place in great, but what sets it apart for me is the way they visualize spending even if you don’t take the time to manually categorize your spending, you get a lot of stuff for free. The data vis and overall UX is excellent and the team is constantly updating and improving. There are times when accounts don’t sync correctly but I think most apps suffer from that issue from time to time. I highly recommend!.Version: 1.0.89

Must haveMust have..Version: 1.0.185

Manage Your Finances in Minutes per DayMonarch provides an innovative approach that finally makes it possible to stay on top of my finances in the amount of time it takes read an email. After I added my accounts and went through an initial review of my transaction categories it’s very straightforward to keep track of what it’s impacting my net worth, what expenses are upcoming and how I’m progressing towards my goals. I used to spend 1-2 hours per month using a spreadsheet just to do basic bill management and still didn’t get a view of my of my overall financial progress. I now have a continuous view of everything impacting my financial picture incomes, investments and expenses. I also like that Monarch not only aggregates my account transactions but they translate the transaction data into meaningful insights like identification of new recurring expenses, missing bill payments, over budget spending, investment balance ups/downs, etc. Finally, it gives me a way to show my wife how we’re doing on our financial picture in way that simple, clear and always up to date. It’s well worth the money..Version: 1.0.100

Intuitive! Monarch is the best! WowI’ve used Mint for years. I just switched to Monarch thanks to Mint closing down. I’ve tried almost every budgeting app, and Monarch is by far the best! It’s so intuitive and easy to use. Easy to import Mint data via CSV. It’s really fast to update Merchants, transactions, Rules, budget and recurring subscription. I love updating logos for my merchants and consolidating duplicates. I’ve never been so aware of my complete finances! Easy to Co-Manage with my wife who has her own account to access the budget, Mint didn’t allow this. Mint was really slow, so it was unrealistic to truly update your past history. The ONLY advantage Mint had was updating Apple Card, vs all other apps that have to import your Apple Card statements a month late. Monarch seems to be slight cheaper if you purchase Monarch through their site, not the App Store..Version: 1.0.162

Great UI, but missing core featuresFirst I love the UI and experience. Very easy to see spending by month as well as categorizing transactions. However, I can’t depend on this app yet to have an up to date financial picture. Too many of marquee financial service company connections don’t work. For example Capital One, Charles Schwab to name a couple. What makes this worse is that I can’t manually add transactions nor import CSV/Quicken files. I understand that getting transactions from financial institutions is not easy. However, we need the ability to keep our financial picture up to date when the connections fail. I have a paid subscription and really hope they can either get better financial institutions integration or support manual transactions. I really enjoy using this app but it’s not quite ready to be dependable for my financial picture..Version: 1.0.6

Finally one that worksThis is such a well-designed budgeting app. It takes all the good features of Mint and fixes all of the dumb things about Mint while running smoother and faster with a much better interface. It integrates with all accounts easily, including Venmo, which is a game changer. You no longer have to make venmo transfers every time you get reimbursed, and you can say goodbye to manually splitting and categorizing transactions. Monarch has been a game changer for me, and made me like budgeting apps enough to actually use them again..Version: 1.0.105

Easily track spendingI started using Monarch after using Mvelopes for many years. So far so good. Still getting used to it being a little different. The Monarch app is fairly easy to navigate and does a good job of automatically categorizing transactions while also making it possible to personalize the categories and transactions. It is a little inconvenient to have to switch to the plan view to see progress on spending plan, instead of automatically seeing the spending plan impact when categorizing a transaction..Version: 1.0.99

GoalsMonarch has given me a new perspective on how I view my money. Being able to allocate each month toward a goal all while having a simplistic- yet functional and elegant design. You can use this to track large accounts or small account with small transactions. Monarch really has reached multiple target groups. If you don’t want something overly complicated, but want lots of functionality Monarch is for you..Version: 1.0.3

Great app; continues to improveI’ve tried all of the major apps (Quicken/Simplifi/YNAB/etc.) and found that Monarch works the best for my family. It does the best job with transaction categorization and rule creation. It also syncs beautifully with accounts at my local bank that other apps couldn’t use. I’m finding the budget a bit hard to understand in month-to-month carryover, but Monarch continues to come out with new features, so I’ll just hang on. I’ve been pleased with their rollout of new functionality even in the few months I’ve been using this app. The iPhone/iPad apps offer essentially full functionality that the web app does with only minor exceptions. This is great for someone who is on the go often and only finds time to manage money on their phone or iPad. I plan to be a Monarch customer for the long term..Version: 1.0.92

Good Mint AlternativeMonarch is shaping up to be a great alternative for Mint users. Like Mint, it connects with banking accounts in order to provide real-time updates to spending, allows unlimited customizable budgeting categories, and allows split transactions from a single vendor. The one down-side is that my CIBC account keeps disconnecting every 24 hours… since Monarch is piloting in Canada, I would expect a few glitches and I really hope that they resolve this issue quickly. It’s a real pain to have to reconnect and verify my connecting accounts daily..Version: 1.0.168

Just what I’ve been looking for all these yearsI usually don’t write reviews, but felt compelled due to how good it was. I started using after getting all of those Facebook ads. I’ve used Mint, YNAB, and more. Yes, it’s not free, but it’s good software and doesn’t have ads. It’s very simple, automated with the ability to set up category rules, and has a progress review where you see where you are in the month versus your budget. They are also experimenting with a forecasting feature. Lastly, you can submit and vote for the features you want. It’s a new software, but that last feature I believe will make this become the type of app it’s users really want. 5 stars..Version: 1.0.24
