DOOM II for Negative User Reviews

EhhI like DooM 2 I but this version of it is just ehh only the guns really work which is fine but the chainsaw I can’t get it to work I’ll tap and hold it but just does nothing and it’s stupid I feel like that there should be an option to have a button to fire weapons instead of one side of the screen that fires the weapons so yeah that’s it.Version: 1.1

UnplayableSaw that they’ve added controller support, fantastic grabbed it to give it a go.....no strafe whatsoever. The game is literally unplayable without it..Version: 1.1.4

No Strafe?Haven't played this in a little while, but I've been using a gamepad and the controls were great. Since the update, I can't strafe. Incan move sliders left and right in the options, so it's not the controller. Makes the game very difficult..Version: 1.1.4

Just noThis is terrible. I just wasted 7$ on this, the controls are horrible, it is litterally impossible to play without cheating, it is way far from the classic fast action that you get while playing on a PC. Play this game on iPhone or iPad and you'll get cancer, that's all..Version: 1.1.2

AWESOME!!!! When played with an external controllerI just recently learned you can play this with a PS4 controller and it. Is. AWESOME! Controls are so crisp and clean, and Doom II is a classic for a reason: the game is amazing. So if you have a PS4 controller lying around (or presumably any Bluetooth controller) I STRONGLY recommend this as a five star buy. I’m giving it three stars because with default controls … well. You can have fun playing with God Mode enabled or on “I’m too young to die” difficulty, but besides that it’s basically unplayable. The fire button on the right side is so tiny you cannot fire at will. Then on the left side the fire button is so close to the “use” button that you waste ammo constantly when trying to open a door (or take a rocket to the face) With an external controller this game is AMAZING. Thank you guys so, so much for making it so intuitive. With touch screen controls don’t even bother though..Version: 1.1.6

Controls are awfulTapping to shoot works maybe 25% of the time. It's absolutely ridiculous that I am dying over and over again on the first level due to my taps not registering. The movement acceleration is just horrible too, you will go from Sloth to Sonic and vice versa constantly. Not to mention you will continue to move like you're sliding on an ice rink long after you let go of the movement side. Fix these three things, and the game will be so much better. But until then, I refuse to resorting to buying a $50 Mfi controller to try and play a $5 mobile game..Version: 1.1.3

Keyboard support on iPad?I tried to play it on an iPad. It looked cool but touch controls were horrible on the ipad as the screen is really big and for example the weapon wheel is so far in the middle. Then I tried with a keyboard and you can move with WASD, change weapons with the number keys and swap them with Q & E keys. You can even use TAB for the map, cmd + > to pause. But no keys for turning and shooting. Like WTF? Why the controls for shooting and turning are missing???.Version: 1.1.6

Neither Doom II or Doom will load on my iPhoneWhen I got them both no issues and although the controls are not great enjoyed playing them. Now neither will load, please sort ASAP.Version: 1.1.2

Impossible to play without strafing controlsIf this game’s controller support worked like any other FPS, where the left stick controls forwards movement AND strafing this would be a 5 star review. Sadly, playing Doom 2 without those controls is such a chore it’s not even funny. Here’s hoping an upcoming update contains better controller options because it’s basically unplayable in its current form..Version: 1.1.4

Same Doom II, but controls are terribleThis is the Doom you remember, there’s no doubt about that, but the controls are ruined. The only thing I would ask is that you add an option to switch back to the original mobile release controls and/or add gyroscope/3D touch controls to make playing it more bearable..Version: 1.1.3

Controls!!Everything’s great... except the controls, which results in an unplayable experience... please fix the controls! I remember the original release years ago had good controls, I think John Romero did that... ask him how he did it and then change it back. I can’t get past one level..Version: 1.1.3

No more strafing with a controller?Recent update broke strafing with the left stick using the PS4 and Nimbus controller. Please fix. Otherwise these ports (Doom and Doom 2) games are excellent..Version: 1.1.4

Not digging the new controls.I’m glad Doom 2 finally has an iPhone port, but I wish they’d kept the mappable control scheme of the original Doom port from a few years back. I used to map it so it was just like this new control scheme, except I’d just slide my right thumb up to fire, and it worked perfectly. This double tap to autofire thing is kinda dumb considering half the arsenal is automatic weapons and a lot of the enemies require concentrated fire. The rhythm that you have to double tap is also oddly specific, far too slow for the kind of quick reaction time this game requires on Ultra Violence. Half the time I get it to work, it’s by accident, which made Barrels of Fun exactly the wrong kind of hell. The analogue movement makes thin platforms like in The Chasm a lot easier to navigate though, so that’s a plus. The first iPhone port just got the controls so right, I wish they could be brought back..Version: 1.1.1

Pas latéralLe pas latéral avec manette x-box ou dual shock ne fonctionne pas.Version: 1.1.4

Horrible controlsGreat game as a whole, but awful controls. To me, this feels very unplayable with the current control situation. Old customizable system was golden, and I beg directly to developers, bring it back or make the control scheme swappable. I’ll buy the first Doom in return..Version: 1.1.4

Controller bindings broken! When using an MFi controller, the left analog stick does not allow for strafing, it just provides forward and backward movement only. I’ve tested with a generic MFi controller and a Dual Shock 4. Both have the same issue. Please fix; this is unplayable with a controller right now!.Version: 1.1.4

Controls!Controls are dreadful and ruin the game. But sort the controls out and it would be excellent..Version: 1.1.1

Do not buy. Until controls are fixedThe controls a really bad. You can’t fire automatic weapons unless you double tap the screen just right. You also have to turn left or right with the same finger you are shooting with. And you have press the center of the screen to open doors and turn switches. If you are stalking the enemy you must keep touching the screen to prevent the extremely helpful “how to use the control screen” from covering your field of view. Very disappointing. I’m just glad I have an old iPad with this game when you could actually control the player.Version: 1.1.2

CrashingI love this game (when it’s working). Recently though, it’s been crashing shortly after starting it. Please fix..Version: 1.1.4

Fix the controls for arrow keys, pleaseBethesda, please allow users to map their own keyboard buttons for controls, or add in support for the arrow keys on magic keyboard/BT/etc. wasd is nice but there’s no good way to turn left and right! Purists will remember playing this game with the arrow keys on their keyboard - and the left and right key were for turning, not strafe..Version: 1.1.6

Controls :(The new controller format is terrible as I’m used to the older version.Devs please make controls adjustable or at least give the option to use old control setup..Version: 1.1.6

Marred by bad control systemI don’t usually play games I loved the original Doom on older iOS so much I completed it. However, the control system on this ruins what should be another top game. Please scrap this double tap fire button and put the old controller system (and options) back.Version: 1.1.3

Latest update crashesWhen loading saved games this new update crashes. How can I revert?.Version: 1.1.6

New update sucksWhy ruin a good thing? It was working well, now it’s super dark everywhere all the time..Version: 1.1.2

ControlsI agree with the ppl that say this needs to be more like the previous version the controls need to be revamped just like the community is asking for, like I said on doom 1 (classic) the auto fire needs to be worked on as well as int control scheme. Doom-Fan-For-Life :) 3 stars until the control feature is ‘fixed’ finally. Plz fix controls and auto fire....Version: 1.1

Needs tilt control!!!Desperately needs tilt control. The first teaser of classic doom had this and was a joy to use. This is horrendous. Looks and sounds great but really bad controls..Version: 1.1.1

Great game, shame about the controlsI’m a long time Doom fan, and have played across various mobile devices. It’s nice to be able to get a quick Doom fix on the go, but the controls on this implementation are really uncomfortable - this ruins the experience a bit..Version: 1.1.6

Bad ControlsUsing a PS4 controller this game is terrible. I will request a refund because it’s virtually unplayable using this..Version: 1.1.4

WORST CONTROLS IN GAME HISTORY!!!One we paid for this. Two from since the creation of the electronic video game back in 1947 I would have to say these are the worst controls in the history of gaming. Not an assumption.. just plain fact. Whoever is responsible for the re-release of this app should be ashamed of themselves for the end result. You can actually feel in the controls the laziness in development. Those responsible left fecal matter all over the series. It’s 2020 for goodness sake..Version: 1.1.2

The ability to move is shockingPlease improve the App. I paid excited to have my favourite game on my mobile, only to find out it’s impossible to turn around!.Version: 1.1.4

Would be 5 stars if…On the Nintendo switch version you can tilt the switch to aim it’s Alamo as accurate as a mouse. It’s the closest you’ll ever get to mouse aiming and could easily be added. You also need to be able to customize the button location and size. If you could it would be perfect and get 5 stars and I’d buy doom 1 on here. I own the doom 2 floppy disks my grandmas had. Doom final doom doom bfg doom brutal doom doom3- eternal. I’ve beat them all on nightmare. I know what the game needs..Version: 1.1.6

Could have been 5 stars but...Auto fire should be default or an option. Back when DOOM 1 was out on mobile I feel like the controls were a lot better. They had a separate area for shooting and controlling the movement. I’m getting wrecked in this game with these new controls and I’m a veteran DOOM player. Please give us more options for the control layout!.Version: 1.1

UnplayableEvery Time I attempt to fire on an enemy, my targeting jumps to the left or right and I miss. Putting the “move” controls in the same spot as “fire” is just stupid. Using the gyroscope feature of iPhone to turn, would have been more intelligent. And double tap for auto activation is like trying to win the lottery. Never works until enemies are on top of you and killing you. Great game turned into garbage by designers who don’t actually play what they create..Version: 1.1

Can be significantly improvedThis game on touch controls is really great for a “pick up and play” kind of attitude. It would be just as amazing to play as the PS4 port. Which I honestly wish I would have done first if I were looking for a perfect Classic DOOM port. Please Bethesda if you really do care for the classics and the integrity of what they are. Add control mapping options to this and would be the outstanding game we all cherish and remember..Version: 1.1.4

Needs screen layout optionsWorthless game. Terrible control. No option to increase or decrease fire “button” or open-door “button” size. No option to move buttons around on screen. Turning on run all the time turns it off. Because i can’t increase fire button size I miss pressing it often, resulting in getting pelted by enemies that should end up dead. Why do I miss the fire button? Because I have to use my right thumb to turn my character, and it never seems to stay on the same place on the screen. And it would be nice if I could open doors with my right hand and not only my left. Also, I don’t want a fire button on both the left and right. I know a touchscreen isn’t an ideal way to play an fps, but giving the player options to change the screen layout would go a long way to making this a better playable game. As it currently stands I wouldn’t waste your $5 on this..Version: 1.1.6

Does Bethesda even care about this?I appreciate that Bethesda has released Doom II for iOS. It’s great to see that there is still life left in this classic! Unfortunately, it feels like a step back from the original Doom port. The game doesn’t expand to fill widescreen phones. There is no gyroscope or 3D Touch support, so it’s difficult to aim and shoot at the same time. The joystick requires a swipe across center to strafe, which can be frustrating when trying to move quickly. And, most glaringly, there is no multiplayer. Before [or after?] spending $5 on this game, check out “Marathon 2: Durandal” (which is a contemporary of Doom II and is free on the App Store) to see how well a retro shooter can play on iPhone..Version: 1.0

Doom guyReally like the game. Been playing since it originally came out back in the 90’s. This update to the game switched up the controls and it’s a terrible play through now. I wish they could go back to the buttons on the screen vs this weird zones to tap and double tap in. I have shot a rockets in my face trying to open doors. So I gave only 3 starts..Version: 1.1.1

Hate the new controlsWorse than the last ones. They’re horrible. It’s put me off playing. I hate touchscreen games with fake ‘buttons’ instead of using proper ‘full screen’ touchscreen controls. Can you allow us to revert to the old ones under ‘Options’ in the next update please? Let us choose..Version: 1.1.6

Please give control optionsHonestly I’ve been waited for Doom II on iOS for a while and for the original Doom port to be updated to work. And my prayers have been answered... almost. I’m so pumped to have these games now, but the control scheme has been updated and it is terrible. To top it off there are ZERO options to change it. Why? Both of these games are almost unplayable in the current control scheme. Guns like the chaingun are impossible to continuously fire. Rockets fire while trying to move near a wall. I know there may be some people out there who may find this control scheme usable, but please give us some options. With this current scheme I’m not going to be playing either doom on iOS anymore..Version: 1.1

Ok controls but crashingRecently updated the controls which are a lot better than that god awful control scheme they had a few months back. Still not as tight or easy as the original iPad version though. I also think some customization for button sizes would be much appreciated. My biggest complaint though and the reason for the 2 stars is the app crashes. No excuse for a large name developer to be putting out buggy software. Shameful.Version: 1.1.6

Good game, but control is a challengeI was waiting for a while to play Doom 2 on IOs. Before I was playing the previous Doom version. I really liked the different options of the control. So I found the right setting for me. But at the moment the control is quite a challenge, due it can‘t be changed. Auto fire is nearly impossible for me to use. So no chain gun or plasma rifle for me. Hope it get changed soon to have several control options. Otherwise the game gets me back to the good old 90s..Version: 1.1

Nice port, shockingly bad weapon controlsIt’s hard to describe how bad the weapon controls are, visually the game is good which makes it such a shame that the weapon controls are a dumpster fire. The auto fire can only be done by a very precise double click. Click a fraction of a second too fast or too slow and it stops firing/ gun jams. This makes using the chaingun in continuous fire very difficult, it’s fine when you standing still and not being chased/ shot at but when your moving and being chased by imps and floating eyes it’s nearly impossible. This means you either have to keep rapid tapping the fire on the chain-gun which makes turning and shooting at the same time impossible or use the chain gun in single shot mode which is ridiculous. You have to play it to realise just how bad it is. Avoid until it’s fixed. Doom without a working chain gun is a joke..Version: 1.1

Custom controlsThis isn’t a bad port, but the control options are so lack luster, no hug opacity scaling, no allocation or movement of the buttons at all is what makes this port annoying to deal with. If the team who port this cared, they would of honestly allow the players to tune this. I just wanna play this game with touch controls and a saved system that doesn’t corrupted the game for no reason.Version: 1.1.6

You can skip the Bethesda net login. It can still be played. You can skip the Bethesda net login. It can still be played. Controls are always difficult on touch screen adaptations however. It is slick but just too hard without a mouse and keyboard.Version: 1.1.1

The single worst controls I’ve seen in a mobile fpsFor one there in absolutely no customization outside of the sensitive then there’s the big one the fire button instead of being able to hold the button and have it shoot and be able to turn and all it is is tap the screen stand and hope you survive even with the auto guns and the chainsaw you gotta tap definitely don’t recommend and definitely getting a refund.Version: 1.1.1

I HATE THE NEW CONTROLSWhy can’t you just add options instead of replacing the controls some of us like?!?! Jeeeezzzz. Please fix and I’ll revise my score. Annnnd my saves don’t work anymore....Version: 1.1.6

Keyboard support terribleThere are WASD keys but the A D strafe instead of turn, which would make more sense in a doom game. There is also no way to shoot with the keyboard? Why is this so half-baked?.Version: 1.1.6

Works great but no iPad Pro supportOnly fills about half of my iPad Pro 11”. Using it with the DualShock 4 on iPadOS and disappointed at no full screen..Version: 1.0

Controls are absolutely awfulI’m a veteran doom player, I’ve played every port out there over the years and this is easily the worst due to the controls. For one the iPhone can only handle so many inputs, so even if you somehow master the terrible controls you can’t play doom how it’s meant to be played. And another fatal flaw is you can’t sprint with 2 directions pressed at once (AKA strafe sprinting) which gives you faster running speed in the other versions which is absolutely required for some secrets. I figured the controls would be bad on a touch screen phone port but man, this is beyond horrible. I don’t get why they even bothered..Version: 1.1.4

ControlsTotally unplayable on iPad. Can only go forward, back and sidewards. No rotation at all. Will have to delete this app…shame really..Version: 1.1.6

ControlsPlease add gyroscope aiming.Version: 1.1.2

UnplayableReally need to bring back the original controls. No fluid movement anymore.Version: 1.1.1

Err... I’m sorry, what?!??£5 down the pan to buy this and it is almost UNPLAYABLE?!? It’s not rocket science, why didn’t Bethesda just use the same controller options from the previous Doom iOS game??!? Even on the easiest mode, you’ll spend most of your time running into walls and totally missing the enemies because the control system here is so incompetently made... UPDATE THIS PLEASE!!.Version: 1.1.2

Where’s the multiplayer? Update - gone.(Updated to remove a star as references to multiplayer have been completely removed from App Store description. Very disappponted.) tl;dr decent port - long overdue. Additional bonus levels are included. Will update my review to add stars when the cons below are addressed in a future update.... Cons: 1) The App Store description says there’s local 4 player multiplayer death match and co-op, but I can’t find it anywhere in the menus when running this on both iPad and iPhone on same WiFi network with Bluetooth enabled. 2) touch screen shooting mechanic doesn’t work well with knuckles or chainsaw. Pros: 1) works with my Nimbus Bluetooth controller! Key mappings make sense and work well, and don’t have issues with chainsaw with this input method. Just as with touch screen controls, they are not configurable. 2) the Master Levels are included!.Version: 1.1

Decent port broken with last update.I was happy when the iOS update came out implementing Xbox controller support however after the previous update you can no longer strafe which turned a decent port into an unplayable insult to the original. Do not buy until this is fixed although this may never happen since it has already been several months since it was broken without hearing anything..Version: 1.1.4

Good game shame about the controlsAlways been a big DOOM fan since the first game was released all those many years ago. I have played the game on lots of platforms and had no problem with the controls and always played at the level of ultra violence with ease. But with these controls it’s difficult to play even on the wimpy level. Please bring back the original controls in the options..Version: 1.1.1

UnplayablePlease sort controls - completely unplayable. The original controls for Doom on iPad and iPhone was perfect.Version: 1.1.4

IMPOSSIBLE CONTROLS! TERRIBLE PORT! WASTE!If you've ever wondered what it's like to play doom 2 as a drunk and high doom guy who is wearing a neckbrace while zooming around in an electric wheelchair. Controls are atrocious, and you cannot customize the HUD or where the control buttons are to fire and open doors. All in all, harder to play than the GBC Doom 2. No changes or care went into porting this for the IOS, so thanks for nothing Bethesda. Unless you want it for the nostalgia factor, this is a complete waste of money. I deleted it after going down to 48 health in the first map! Almost impossible to play. Don't get fooled!.Version: 1.1.6

Music is slowFix the music and I’ll 5 star.Version: 1.1
