Sidekick by Sorted Food for Negative User Reviews

DisappointedI was really excited to try this app, but I expected more. I can forgive the fact that ingredient choices and quantities aren’t optimized for my country. What I can’t forgive is inaccurate equipment lists on most recipes. Also they don’t consider salt, pepper, or water as ingredients, so I feel unprepared whenever they are used. And the timers only go off if I leave the app and come back. Also why is every recipe exactly 2 servings? Who is this app for? This feels like a half finished product. I love the idea, but can’t stand the execution..Version: 2.16.0

New updates ruined this appThe most recent updates have ruined a really fun, helpful, user-friendly app. I can no longer find any of my previously selected meals packs to be able to go in at any time and try some of the selected recipes. It seems as though now you can only select and use the meals packs within a give week? Disappointed that something that was so good was changed so significantly and is really pushing marketing more than helpful recipes and information..Version: 2.8.1

Unable to filter for allergiesThe app looks good but there isn’t any way to filter recipe selections by allergies. My family has some pretty serious food allergies and I was hoping the app would allow me to choose recipe selections by filtering out by ingredients. Makes it tricky to use and not a good fit for me.Version: 2.7.0

Not Good for People with Dietary RestrictionsI really wanted to love this app. I thought it would make my food shopping more efficient however, due to my large amount of dietary restrictions, every pack would have multiple ingredients that I can’t eat. It is especially difficult to find a pack without fish that has meat (fish allergies). Ultimately, I couldn’t figure out a way to make the necessary substitutions every week..Version: 1.10.0

SCAM: beware.I cancelled my membership two weeks before any payment was due to go out, and they still charged me. I then went through the process of cancelling a second time, and contacted their customer service to request a refund. They responded saying that my account was still active and instructed me to follow the steps I had already followed twice (which they knew). They will no doubt try to string this along for another month or so to try to get. Another $9 out of me. A real shame that they would be so dodgy and stingy because I really like their videos. This is making me second guess that..Version: 1.5.3

Over engineered, under delivered.I admit I am a USA user… so there are some things I am willing to put up with/deal with myself. What least me to my less stellar review however is the fact that the calendar does not go back more than a week. I use this app for shopping and packs are where it is at, however it defaults (I found it was a setting like 10mins ago sry) to starting each week on a Monday… and I do not do my weekly shop till Thursday. Sometimes I get lazy and let cooking slide a day or 2 which is fine. Except when the weeks don’t match up and my listed pack goes poof because what was “last week” is now 2 weeks ago according to the app. App doesn’t store things you don’t check off that you cooked (also that list infinity scrolls through everything you have cooked multiple times until you realise what it is doing… so frustrating) and there is a way to save things that I would like to cook… but apparently that is a seperate process from selecting a menu/pack whatever. Now I’m hungry on a weeknight and having to scroll through all the salmon recipes on the site to find the one I happened to include from the pack, but didn’t cook THAT dish. Not saving me time or money or saving food waste ( I’m not really a fish person and am not going to use this otherwise)..Version: 2.23.0

New update ruined the utilityThe new update has some serious issues. The app has become so opinionated about how you are supposed to plan and cook. This used to be a great little tool for making a quick shopping list and doing a few meals. Now you have to plan a whole weeks worth of food. And if you don’t make all the recipes by Sunday? Sorry, you’re entire list is gone. I really don’t understand why this was considered an improvement? Why add so much more friction to the users with no real benefit..Version: 2.8.1

Want to like it but app is a bit brokenI have been a fan of sorted food for a long time but have also not made a lot of their food. I wanted to try and this new app seemed promising! The food scheduling is super broken- you can put multiple recipes in one day by accident and it just disappears and you cannot change what pack you scheduled for one week. I also think it would be helpful to see what recipes have similar ingredients for yourself so you can sort and make your own “packs” If this gets fixed and the bugs get…. Sorted (pun intended) I might come back and try it. As it stands? Unusable for me and I’ll stick with my nytimes cooking and their cookbook app.Version: 2.8.0

Can I get help on this?I can’t go past the recipes when I first signed in, both of the thumbs up and down buttons just stop working and I have to get rid of the tab and start over. Is there something im doing wrong and can someone give me steps on what to do for that part because it just won’t work after that for me. I will make a correct review when I can actually use the app.Version: 2.16.3

Almost greatFirst off, really appreciate the month-long trial; it’s unheard of on the App Store and really gives a chance to try it out. This comes from an ASD perspective; Sidekick does a lot right; uses common UK store pack sizes to cut waste, can easily reschedule cooking and switch between steps. The little prompts about when to prep steps or wash up or get other things ready are really useful too. The grocery list could be better with hiding/minimising what you’ve ticked off, and/or being able to suggest substitutes when the store is out (c.f. Mealime), fairly minor though. What torpedoes it for me sadly is the lack of nutritional information. I get anxious over logging things and some of the dishes in packs vary wildly in how calorific they are, I either have to stress out on the planning state calculating everything, or cook and then have an episode because it turns out that dish completely ruins my budget for the day. Having to shelve this, YMMV though..Version: 2.18.2

Not as customizable as you’d think.I tried the app, because I love the ideas and I’d not to have to worry about menus. The thing is, I was hoping (since Barry is allergic to pineapple) that there would be an option to opt out of food that you are allergic to or can’t tolerate. There isn’t and since mine is just a trial (for the month), I’m thinking this is not the app for me. I was hoping to subscribe because the recipes seem really good, but since I have several food allergies it’s just not going to work for someone like me. For example, I’d like to have vegetarian options without eggs (since, yeah allergic) and low carbs. I thought I just would choose the vegan options - but there isn’t one and the and the veggie one included egg as the center. I guess I’m really disappointed because I thought there would be more options for customizing the choices you would have, but there isn’t..Version: 2.2.0

Needs a bit more workGood idea and it’s great to have recipes with not many ingredients, but I downloaded this app to try and save money but the app has not helped with that. Even the money saving dishes contain some more expensive ingredients. There should be more filters to search for meals and more variety on the dishes from around the world, would especially love to see some African dishes!.Version: 2.13.2

Miso PastaI found the pasta to be a bit bland, even after adding more miso paste. Next time I will add some chilli paste to give it some bite..Version: 2.13.1

Not for people with allergiesI was looking forward to this. But unfortunately almost all of the recipe packs have at least 1 meal that contains an allergen for someone in my family and there's no way to filter them out like in typical meal prep kits. And the few recipes I could cook were only for 1 or 2 people. So it falls flat for me because the selection is worse than that of a meal kit. I was expecting more selection since the team doesn't need to procure the food too. Maybe it will get better over time but allergen filtering is a must even if it has substitution ideas. Also you can't read the recipe easily before cooking (the first step in cooking) it so I didn't know what to expect from a dish..Version: 2.3.0

Pretty buggyI am having quite a few problems. I cannot move onto the next step. When I go to open the chicken recipe it keeps going back to the home page. I don’t mind vegetarian food, but it seems to lean heavily that way. Out of the 9 recipes, 7 are vegetarian. I like the idea and I am sure the kinks will get worked out..Version: 0.2.6

Recipes seem limited, Can’t preview beforehand.I made an account on the website, downloaded the app and logged in. I was initially struck with the subscription pop-up which I declined. I want to see what kinds of meals are available before paying anything thanks! There doesn’t seem to that many recipes from what I could see. The ones that were there aren’t my kind of meal and come across to me as not really aimed at normal people cooking mid-week dinners. The app has swiftly been deleted and my account requested for deletion. I haven’t input any payment details into the website or sidekick app and the App Store says I have NO active subscriptions, so if I’m charged after the free trial ends I will be annoyed..Version: 2.19.4

Beautifully designed but not so simpleThe app is lovely and well designed but it is very confusing, why would I only need three recipes for a whole week? Also there’s no way of saying I don’t want to see recipes containing certain foods e.g gluten. Half the recipes I saw contained jack fruit which I have never even seen before in a shop. Before downloading I thought the idea of the app was to choose recipes for the week as your “pack” and the app would show you a shopping list and when you select a recipe to cook it would play the videos etc… I presume this is only possible after you’ve built up enough packs to have a favourite recipe section. Also what if you don’t like all the recipes in one pack? I’ve then used my one credit (which is also a ridiculous system when already paying monthly) and can’t view more recipes. I thought the idea was to take the stress out of meal planning but it did not do that..Version: 1.9.0

Not for me. Half the ingredients need to be googled to find in the states.I have had it for about two weeks now(so take my review with a grain of salt) and I have tried to make a few of the recipes. But it’s difficult to translate some of the items into items available in my local store here in the US. Back bacon for example, I’ve googled the heck out of it and shopped around with no luck. And I totally misunderstood what was meant by loose white potatoes(I figured maybe baby Yukon Gold potatoes) and there are many other examples in just the first set of recipes I choose to try to make. It also is not very easy to actually see the actual recipe so I was surprised when you use the potatoes to basically make mashed potatoes(obviously they meant what we call russet potatoes). To me, this app still has a long way to go before it works for most American households..Version: 1.8.0

Great app if only you could see the nutritionThe app itself works well. The packs idea is great for shopping and all. As someone who wants to have an idea on how many calories and protein my meal has. This app simply can’t provide it. Shame I won’t be using it past the free trail. It’s such a massive omission to a meal app I can only bring myself to give two stars I’ll definitely subscribe if they do add nutrition information.Version: 2.22.2

Getting worse and worseCome on folks - you really have a great app here if you’d stop getting in the way of yourself. Has anyone actually requested a planning feature? My guess is that most people don’t engage with the app in this way, and forcing people to do so (and changing the UI, again!) is just alienating. All of the new features are unnecessary, the old app (pre-rebranding) was perfectly fine, and much more usable. If you’re going to make changes, consult with your users first - don’t just implement things you think will work..Version: 2.8.0

The app used to be 5 stars, now it’s 3For some reason they switched to being able to pick recipes for the week to setting up a meal planner for the week but the planner consistently does not work. If I add a meal it will either show up on the day or the day before it. If I’ve already put a meal on say Monday and go to add one on to Tuesday it often just overrides my Monday meal leaving me without a way to check the recipes I picked for this week… it was a truly unique way to deal with planning, shopping, and cooking meals. Now it’s frustrating while still being useful for food recipes..Version: 2.8.1

Slowly getting worseThis app seems to be slowly going down in terms of usablilty. How do you open a pack you've used before? It used to be at least somewhat intuitive to do so. And where is the ipad app? I don't know anyone who would prefer to use a tiny phone screen for a recipe vs an iPad..Version: 2.13.2

Reinventing the wheel?I loved the app up until this most recent update; it used to be a great way to look for meals by packs to keep down on food waste, and look through recipes. This latest update has made the app unwieldy, and the constant pressure to put a schedule together makes it unfriendly to people such as myself where I might be called in to work at night. It used to be a great repository of fun, cost-cutting, and delicious meals. Now I need to abide by it and its changing systems to even function half as smoothly as it used to.Version: 2.8.0

Mediocre appThe app has a few issues, when trying to open it it got stuck on a downloading screen when in the grocery store. Dietary restrictions also are a problem if you trying to use this. Be nice to see more attention paid to ingredient names for those in North America. As well add temps for when items when there done. But the meals we been able to make have all been delicious so far..Version: 2.3.0

I so badly want to love this, but…I love these guys. They’re great and I watched each video every week. I thought I’d try this app out. While it has some great ideas, it needs LOTS of work to be able to compete with other similar apps that do it much better. It’s pretty user friendly, but still can be hard to find things. The biggest issue between this app and others, it doesn’t give you the option to put dietary issues. I cannot have anything lactose and don’t want any recipes that include it. I tried looking for many ways to find options to show me things without dairy in it, but I could not find anything. And not just for lactose free, if you have any dietary issues, I could not find a way to put so. Unfortunately, there are similar apps that do this far better. And they tend to start with asking about any dietary issues you may have, so it can upload recipe’s immediately for your dietary needs. If they can make this more user friendly and give you options for dietary issues, I may come back and try it again in the future. But for now, this needs some major work..Version: 2.9.0

Used to be greatDon’t get me wrong, the recipes and idea are great. We make wonderful, delicious meals every week. However, since rebranding to Sidekick, the user interface has become unusable. The buttons are either so small that it takes multiple attempts to press them, so close to the home bar that they don’t work, or so close to the top of the phone that you have to tap just below the button for it to register. Cooking with this app used to be easy, now scrolling through recipes, turning the audio guides off, or moving to the next step is a chore. Such a shame that a great premise is let down by an unusable interface..Version: 2.2.0

Not as straightforward as I thoughtChoosing recipes and building a grocery list is not that simple in app. It asks for dietary restrictions and then does nothing to modify the recipes offered to you. Same with asking how many people you cook for. No changes to recipes, no automatic recipe adjustments or even the option to adjust recipe sizes or the grocery list items needed. The recipe ideas are great, and I’m sure they would taste good. If I could actually open a recipe to cook it..Version: 2.12.1

Good potential but not great as isI love the idea and I’ve enjoyed the recipes so far. They’re easy to cook and follow along to however the app is buggy and timers don’t always work for me. I think the portion sizing recommended is also ridiculous, on one recipe it had three slices of French toast as a main meal… I eat a lot but this seems so mean! I had to seriously bulk out the meal and it reflects in the price of my weekly shop so it’s not saving me as much money as I’d hoped. Also why can I only view 3 meals a week, what about the other 4 days? Why would I pay for a meal service that only feeds me for less than half of the week!?.Version: 2.2.0

New update ruined itIt used to be so convenient to choose a couple meals and have a grocery list made that either my husband or I could look at, and cook from, from either of our phones. Now we would need to pay even more for the new upgrade/update in order to stay logged in and both be able to use it. It’s already frankly too expensive, and now they want more money? And we can’t even upgrade until our subscription ends in February? Highway robbery..Version: 2.18.1

Love the app, keeps forgetting I’m subscribedAwesome recipes, love the food and the one shop per week when shopping for one person (the 2 person meals give me 2 dinners and 2 lunches) Unfortunately I’ve had to unsubscribe twice and then re-subscribe twice now to actually be allowed to look at the recipes. Really frustrating, gonna stop using it if it does it again.Version: 1.10.5
