Picture Bird: Birds Identifier for Negative User Reviews

Don’t know if I’m going to be charged just for downloading the app.I feel like I’m going to be charged automatically £20 a year for ever just because I downloaded the app. When I saw the price I wanted to not agree, but it said free trial had started and small print says I have to go to apple to cancel it. I feel I can’t trust these guys...Version: 2.1

Can’t cancelDownloaded the app then saw the subscription charges. Can’t see how to cancel within 7 days as the app doesn’t appear in my app subscriptions. Can someone advise how to cancel??.Version: 1.1.9

50$ / yearI get that some apps require a subscription, I get that it costs money to run things, but it’s shady af to not be upfront about these costs BEFORE users download and open the app. Just be upfront, not everyone has unlimited data to be downloading an app just to learn they can’t afford to keep the app. Also seen several reviews about how hard it’s been for some folk to unsubscribe, which would be unsurprising considering how upfront this app isn’t..Version: 2.11.5

Poor user interfaceAccidentally bought this. Can’t find a way to unsubscribe so I don’t waste another $26 next year. Guess I’ll have to contact Apple..Version: 1.1.8

Great idea, needs workIdentification was all over the place, mostly due to the fact that photos kept getting cropped so that the top half of the bird disappears. This is a fundamental flaw which should be fixed. The idea is good, and whilst the information provided is quite basic it would be enough to make the app a handy companion if the photo comparison part worked properly..Version: 1.0.1

MisleadingDoes not declare pricing or in app purchases. Found I subscribed to an annual fee, after feeling safe it was a free app..Version: 1.2.3

Ridiculous! We found a baby bird and have been feeding it for a week. Feathers are forming and it’s eyes are open so , to find out what we had, we downloaded this app. I took a photo and it said “house sparrow” Good we thought. Then I took it again to double check and it said “Chestnut Warbler”?? A third photo of same bird, in same position something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT? Evidently it doesn’t work and I’m deleting it !.Version: 2.7

ScamThis App is a scam Can’t delete or remove from subscriptions. Keeps taking my money and doesn’t show up on Apple account as a subscription so I can’t report it to Apple..Version: 2.9.8

Je veux annulerL’abonnement de Picture birds de Picture this et dePicture insects Trop cher pour mes besoins..Version: 1.1.9

Junk, Everything is a house sparrowThe Quail in the back yard? House sparrow. Woman’s face? House sparrow. Picture of empty grass patch? House sparrow. Man’s face? Kiwi. You would think it could at least identify *not* a bird at this point..Version: 2.9.11

Sneaky appNever said there was a fee. Said free. Now I can’t get rid of it. Sneaky Do not trust.Version: 2.5

Woeful. And a Rip Off. Disgraceful.Developers have to make money, of course they do but £35 for a year for this? Seriously. They should be ashamed. Firstly the app does not work very well which is never a good thing. It clearly hasn’t been tested fully and has more bugs than a few. You can record a board sound and get a different answer every time. It’s just a poor, poor application. But the price is scandalous. You pay for quality and this is lacking in any quality of value for money..Version: 2.9.14

HorribleHonestly I had high hopes for the app but it didn’t even identify the birds correctly. I sent an email quite a while ago to request a refund because even though I stopped the subscription somehow I was still charged for it. It took $40 out of my account and my account went negative and my bank charged me more money for them taking out money that was supposed to have been canceled. No answer from any of the app makers. Highly upset. Down that money that I desperately needed. Don’t trust the app when they do things like this. 😡.Version: 2.6

Ap doesn’t work without a subscription.App doesn’t work without a subscription. Apple ID accepted it and started it. Hopefully I can unsubscribe before it’s too late. Apparently it needs to be verified and approved before they will unsubscribe me..Version: 2.0

MisleadingEBird said this app was free but after you download it it says for a one week free trial before you are charged and they dint even say how much it costs! I am disgusted with this app. And it did not correctly id the bird anyway!😖.Version: 2.6

Don’t say it’s free to download when it’s notI now need to cancel..... you need to put this option on the app. I will find a way to cancel eventually but you are making it very difficult and I am wasting a sunny afternoon when I should be guess what -listening to bird song!.Version: 2.6

HelpOne star is too many, I needed this to help me distinguish smaller uk birds but to date I have had several amazing birds in my Somerset back garden. Swinhoe Pheasant, Zanaida Dove, Indian Stone Curley, Veerey, Greater Rhea, Nene, etc. All identified for sparrow size birds..Version: 1.2.3

NICE CLICK AND BAIT !!!YOU DOWNLOAD THE APP AND THEN THEY CHARGE YOU $40 A YEAR IN ORDER TO USE IT !! SHAME ON YKU GUYS !!!!!.Version: 2.9.1

I cannot cancel my free trial!??Says 7 day free trial, can cancel anytime. But when I go to subscriptions it’s not there?? I will take £18 on Saturday which I do not want to pay. How do I cancel this??? I will report this if I do not get an answer. Not happy at all..Version: 1.1.9

Two out of sixteen birds identified correctlyIt is challenging to get close enough to get a big picture of wild birds, so I am discounting the error rate a bit. However, I am a Florida resident and this app keeps suggesting that my photos are of Australian and New Zealand birds. For example , type of ibis with its distinctive beak was identified as a black swan. A red wing black bird with the wing color clearly showing was also mis-identified. That one should have been easy. It also identified similar pictures of the same bird as different birds. I was looking for an app that could help me identify the tougher ones but tested it out on species I knew. Very disappointed!.Version: 1.1.9

BadThey said a parrot ( cockatoo ) was a northern cardinal.Version: 2.10.9

Has amazing promise - very informative.I’ve used PictureThis for plants for a year now and IT IS EXCELLENT. This application appears to employ the same technology and format. My one question for developers is - if the application identifies the wrong species - is there a way of correcting it to the right one? I’m not quite sure what data the application collects and how it uses it, but if users could correct incorrect identities, could this information then be used to improve the algorithms or whatever is employed to determine identity? I imagine that, over time, even poor quality photographs could lead to identifications with a higher sensitivity with the additional data inputed by users who correct wrong identities. I’m not sure if I’ve expressed myself well, but essentially I suggest that users could improve accuracy by correcting mistaken identifications..Version: 1.1.9

MisleadingI was charged 43 Australian dollars within a few days of downloading and before the free trial period was over. No mention of fee in the App Store page and cancel option is hidden deep in settings somewhere. On top of this the app performed poorly in my opinion..Version: 2.9.1

RubbishI sent 4 different photos of the same bird to be identified and each picture suggested a different bird ... some not even native to my continent! Just do some research on google!.Version: 2.1

Picture BirdThis app might be good if you go to a zoo and are 5 feet or closer to the bird but so far using it just for about a week it is always incorrect if you are more than 10-20 feet away. It just guesses. Compared to picture this which identifies plants with 95-98% accuracy I cannot give this app greater than 5-10% accuracy if you are more than 10 feet- it also guesses based on whether the bird is on the ground or in a tall tree. This app would be much improved if somehow there could be a way to magnify much better.Version: 2.4

App won’t openApp will not open, reached out to Apple because I can’t find a way to contact you! It needs to be fixed or I want a refund.Version: 2.10.4

How do you cancel?App when downloaded appears to sign you up for annual subscription. No clear / easy way that I can see to cancel (not showing in Apple Subscriptions), so have had to email notifying of cancellation before 7 day trial ends. Might be / might not be decent app, but this has put be right off so have deleted.Version: 2.10.1

Doesn’t work at allThis app is one of the worst apps I've ever had , it doesn't work for an example i gave it a picture of a flamingo and it said it was a great bustard and i gave it a picture of another bird and it said it was a bat so i recommend not to buy this app.Version: 2.10.9

Useless-I don’t love birds for $40 taken out of my accountI downloaded the trial version because I wondered what bird was being so loud outside. I’m not a bird enthusiast or anything. Of course I was automatically charged the $40 yearly price instead of the $3.99 monthly price. No apps with integrity in their product have to deceive people into something that they don’t want. Any such contract has no legal binding as a signature is only proof of deception. Contracts are agreements between two parties. What is written and signed only proves that two parties were either in agreement or one was deceived. Let’s look at the fine print. It’s “fine” because it’s meant to deceive. Otherwise it would be written clearly in bold. And there wouldn’t be unhappy people. This isn’t a game show and we’re sore losers! The solution is simple. You pay for what you use. No harm no fowl. If you have a useful product then people will happily pay for it. That’s why companies with integrity withstand the erosion of time. This applies to all apps that iTunes have yet to afford the courtesy to their customers with this free trial madness! This has got to stop! It leaves us with a bad taste i our mouth. Shame on iTunes and Shame on you!.Version: 2.7

Can’t figure out how to cancelI didn’t mean to sign up for this trial and now can’t see it in my subscriptions to cancel nor can I find how to cancel in app.Version: 1.2.2

Bird identification reviewMakes too many mistakes with Australian birds. Will cancel subscription.Version: 1.1.9

Disasterous!!I too can NOT stop the recurring cost of subscription! $45AUD per year!!!!!!.Version: 2.11.2

American? robinNot impressed at all. I’m in trial period, living in the UK and took picture of our beautiful English robin to see how app works. Can’t see how to delete..Version: 1.1.9

Can’t CancelSame issue that others have had, cannot find a way to cancel the free trial. An £18 subscription charge will be due in a few days and there is no means of cancelling. Can the developer please advise how we can stop the free trail and avoid the subscription charge?.Version: 1.1.9

PriceI think this is my first negative review. App is a 5 star app. But it’s ruined by the extreme price, the app is probably worth a $20 one off payment, but $60?? Wait not only is it $60, that’s PER YEAR, you don’t get to own it, you pay $60 every year to use it. This really is scamming people out of their money..Version: 2.11.4

Too much $Merlin bird ID is free, why would I pay for this..Version: 1.2.3

BEWARE of automatic subscriptionThey app seems to work well enough, but it says that it is free for seven days without specifying that it will automatically subscribe you for not it’s one week subscription option, not it’s one-month subscription option, but for the full year subscription option to the tune of 50 bucks! (2 1/2 times the price of the Audubon field guide book) Quite an expensive oversight if you forget to cancel it within the seven days! Since I’m not an ornithologist, I’ve cancelled the subscription renewal for next year (of course if I was an ornithologist I probably wouldn’t need the app anyway).Version: 2.3

RefundI said I wanted to cancel but you have changed me will you please refund me Immediately.Version: 1.1.9

Version: 1.1.8

Don’t click this. It costs money. Misleading! This is not free and very hard to unsubscribe..Version: 1.2.2

Don’t want to subscribeHow do I cancel this? I can’t see it in subscriptions and don’t want to keep the app. I definitely do not want to get charged as i downloaded it today and have made my decision..Version: 1.1.8

Picture Bird Song IdentifierI was so looking forward to using this app to identify birds by their song. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work. Recording the voice of a bird recently on Picture Bird, I listened to the three suggestions the app brought up. Hmm…Why do I have to pay $40 a year for three suggestions? It gets worse. All three of the suggestions had the song I had just heard…identical recordings of the same bird. It gets worse still. I brought up iBird Pro, a terrific app I’ve used for years, and played the 5-7 different recordings for each of the three birds suggested by Picture Bird. None of the suggestions were correct. The bird I had recorded was not any of these! This is not the only time this has happened. So far, the app has identified one bird correctly (a Northern Mockingbird) and half diesel incorrectly. Once, I gave up waiting for a bird to sing and stopped the recorder with no sound on it. It still made suggestions. In conclusion, I have to say, this app is a rip-off. It’s a great concept…go do your research and come back to us with a finished product before you start charging for it..Version: 2.10.2

Iphone a problemWorks fine on iPad. But is a disappointment on iPhone. Falls over at every opourtunity..Version: 1.1.9

Doesn’t work, beware ‘trial’ trapAs numerous other reviews have indicated, the primary functions of this app do not work well at all - I have a specialist 500mm lens and this app is not able to ID even basic UK garden birds taken in extremely high resolution. Uploading the same image can even give different, incorrect results. It’s just total guesswork and works about 10% of the time at best. The app is also deliberately built in a way to make it easy to accidentally subscribe to a £30 per year package. This is appalling and I’m surprised Apple even approves such underhand tactics when reviewing apps submitted to the store. Additionally, how has this app scored more than 4.0 as an overall rating? It doesn’t work, and I strongly suspect many of the 5-star ratings (there are very few 5-star written reviews) are not legitimate and are added by the developer. Apple needs to do more to police this stuff and stop people getting ripped off..Version: 2.9.3

Bird recognitionIt’s not recognising birds - it’s difficult to catch as they fly off so quickly, you also can’t get close enough before they do fly off - not sure worth the subscription.Version: 1.1.9

Great App 💚Would love to have easy access to bird calls linked to Identification request Please 🙏.Version: 2.9.1

What?!Did it just charge me for downloading a free app?.Version: 1.1.9

Bird Sounds Stopped WorkingWas a very good app. In fact, it’s the only app I can find for IOS that identifies birds by your photos and recordings. However, the portion that allows you to identify birds by recording sounds stopped working. I checked and there’s no one to contact to get this fixed. Even tried deleting and reinstalling as the app suggested. Still not working. Bummed. :(.Version: 2.9.13

Good app - if you’re quickBy the time I could zoom in and get it focused, frequently the bird had moved or flown off. Without getting a good, clear shot the info given was incorrect. Multiple shots sometimes resulted in multiple results. I’m sure of this because I tested it on birds I know first. Funny note - one shot the bird flew off causing me to capture a chipmunk that was behind it instead. Came up as a wren. Clever disguise, little wren. 😉.Version: 2.2

Needs a little work?Hours of fun. It thought my fourteen old boy was a Rosy Faced Lovebird and my dachshund was a Costa’s Hummingbird. I was less impressed that I came up as a Galah..Version: 2.3

Bird IdentificationI am not using this App & wish to cancel but have been unsuccessful.Version: 2.11.5

3 different suggestions only first was rightOk.Version: 2.9.14

Doesn’t identify by bird callThat’s what I was looking for..Version: 1.1.8

I do not understand why this app does not employ location technologyI am using the app with Sibley Bird book and of course location is a central piece of narrowing choices. Since so many apps use location services for no apparent reason, why doesn’t this app which would benefit so much. I am also confused as to why some birds do not even have a photo. That does not strike me as a finished product or something that you can ask money for. I’m using it for fun but definitely seeing major shortcomings along the path which seem easily fixable by developers..Version: 1.1.9

Locator neededI live in the U.K. and when I use this app (I have a premium membership) with the sound detector, it comes back with North American birds. Is there a place I can turn on a locator inthe app? Thanks.Version: 2.9.12

Totally useless appSo far after taking pictures I have had incorrect definitions of all the birds They are are all common uk birds yet the app can’t give correct definitions as the zoom is useless The one correct definition was a picture I took on the phones camera Don’t buy Only gave it one star as that is the lowest Totally rubbish app.Version: 1.1.7

Birds fly away when I try to take a picture😂Not practically useful.Version: 2.2

Wrong answersNot happy with this app. Way too expensive for the wrong answers! On top of it all I only wanted to try the app and it charged me for a year subscription! What? Are you kidding I feel bamboozled. I thought it was too expensive but I was willing to try it for a week and if it worked (which it doesn’t ) I would gladly pay the $$ but after one day it got almost all of the pictures wrong. The app suggested I had vultures in my Southern California back yard. Give me a break seriously. It is not worth it. I wish I would have read some of the reviews first..Version: 2.11.0

Nice ideaBut I’m based in the UK and it keeps identifying birds found in the US! This probably works better for American users.Version: 2.6

Is this a SCAM????I downloaded the app, but there is nowhere to unsubscribe, so am I going to be charged £35 after a “free trial” which I haven’t actually signed up to?.Version: 2.10.1

Cancel AppHow do I cancel the app?.Version: 1.2.1

Uninvited subscriptionThe app is advertised as free but this is NOT correct. As soon as you have downloaded it it is an automatic subscription requiring you to cancel in order not to pay for renewal after the ‘free’ trial period (7days). This is not simple to do, I still haven’t figured out how to cancel. While the app seems to be great functionally, the forced subscription is very misleading and uninvited..Version: 2.9.2

Terrible!Tested it with 3 pictures of a bird we already knew and it came up with 3 different species that were all incorrect.Version: 1.2

DissatisfiedWaste my time and my money.Version: 2.0

Not a free app!How do I cancel this? It looks like it’s free but apparently not ..Version: 1.2.3

Get closerThis isn’t working all that good. You need to be very close to the bird for it to work. Also I know we don’t not have dark eyed junco’s here in the winter. This app should know what season it is an make it’s id from those algorithms..Version: 1.2.3

ScamEverything written in the other reviews is correct. This app does not work whatsoever..Version: 1.1.8

BEWARE the hidden costSubscription cost is £18 p.a. with 7 days free trial, but I only found this out AFTER downloading the app. Unsubscribing is very difficult to do before first payment is taken.Version: 1.1.6

NigelDoesn’t seem to work at a distance.Version: 2.9.3

How to cancel appI am doing my best to cancel this app. Cannot find iTunes account settings on my phone..Version: 2.9.6

ScamNot happy at all, the free trial date said it ended on the 19th but the subscription actually started then and it charged me before I could cancel the free trial, and apparently false advertising “doesn’t qualify for a refund”..Version: 1.1.6

Not what I hoped for !Can’t find anyway to unsubscribe. First time I have had this problem..Version: 1.2.1

Ripoff$60 a year?????? What a ripoff.Version: 2.9.13

Cancel this app!Still no clear way to cancel the app after a short ‘free trial’. You have to write to them personally and hope they respond before the (ridiculously high) fee is charged!! Beware the scam..Version: 2.9.14

Cancel subscriptionWasn’t clear at the download about how difficult it is to cancel this “free trial” Looks like I’m going to be charged because I can’t work out how to cancel before the 7 days. Be very careful with this app. I’m going to make a complaint to Apple about this app and my credit card company to see what they can do. It’s akin to a scam..Version: 1.1.8
