Airalo: eSIM Travel & Internet for Negative User Reviews

Worst ever customer supportCard twice did not activate 0 customer support basically left stranded with no support. Bought second one because no help same results won’t activate and nobody home on what’s app chat or regular chat! BRUTAL waste of money and time! Ruined experience!.Version: 1.42.0

This eSIM is very unreliable. Feels like a scamAiralo’s eSIM is as unreliable as it gets. I got the eSIM for me and my family once we got to Zermatt, Switzerland. For all 4 of us, it worked for half a day. This confirms that I followed their instructions. Then on a day of excursions, the family split up to different activities and when we tried to reach other, none of our eSIMs were working from different locations. The cell signal showed good strength though. We lost half a day in trying to reconnect with each other, and had to go through anxiety and frustration. Later that evening I tried to work with the customer service after several hours of waiting (precious vacation time) went through each setting in detail, sent them screenshots of each setting and this service did not work. After almost 2 hours, I gave up and said just give my money back. Though it was only $5 each, and the vacation cost us several orders of magnitude more, I felt cheated for being sold a product that was never tested to be reliable and felt severely victimized to a scam. I insisted on getting a refund. They were generous enough to offer a non expiring credit for unused data. I asked then why would I get their service again after this experience. This company is a scam. Don’t even consider buying their product or services ever..Version: 1.38.0

DisasterThis was a terrible experience as I am just charged money for something that is failing to launch properly through no fault of mine. It is obviously not my iPad since the same application work in the last seven days. However it now stopped working completely and the support services are just automated responses tgAt are totally useless and unhelpful. There must be better semis out teHere avoid this one..Version: 1.34.0

Only good when everything worksTL;DR I will keep using this since it usually works, but fixing any issues is difficult (understandably, but it’s frustrating when you’re on holiday and need data relatively urgently). I’ve used this a few times and it’s mostly been amazing, but the most recent time it hasn’t worked (eSIM couldn’t connect to the network for some reason) and the customer service is pretty awful (took them half a day to get back to me and then another day to respond since I was asleep when they replied - I understand that time zones are a thing but one would think that an app serving people on holiday should have 24hr customer service?). They couldn’t resolve the issue and ended up giving me a refund in airmoney (I asked for a proper refund but apparently I would have to prove that I’ve set it up exactly correctly). Since they took so long to respond I ended up buying a new eSIM and luckily that worked so I think I will keep using airalo to travel but just be aware it can be frustrating if things don’t work..Version: 1.24.0

Airalo when problemI’m using merbaha though Airalo. I find it good. First setting up problem. Then at times I error Massage no internet. I have two e sim one mine. It’s working fine. Sets was not straight forward but it work fine. Although a few times I have had massage not internet. I set up my wife on her phone. It was working. I call her phone the call from her phone to mine everything was working. A few days later I tried calling my wife on my end it was ringing but her end nothing. When I tried it keep saying NO INTERNET. It has now been 4 days. I bought it for 7 days. So my experience has been both good and bad. I tried contacting Airalo but they ask for information that if you try going to main pages to get it. I lost all of previous information entries It’s hard to get back or find it again. So I tried contacting help. They asking for my phone number. Which I have disconnected due to phone charge. So if you’re lucky and it works. But if it doesn’t than there in no live help THAT THE PROBLEM I AM STILL NOT CONNECTED. I ONLE 2/3 days left.Version: 1.34.1

Promisses but no delivery!First esim was not working. Had to install a new one with one tech on the phone that does not believe you. Second card , when you arrive overseas, not opening to use your calls and texts messages. After sending a request the answer was < you should open your regular line to use iMessage but you might be charged by you carier for data! >! Never buy again. Lost money and nerves on a trip..Version: 1.42.0

SIM cards don’t work and no assistanceI have complained many times that after a day of working my e sim just suddenly stopped working I had small contact with the company who failed to resolve the issue with minimal effort. I kept asking but. I one replied.. Left on my own after 2 days in an important business trip without wifi I have now purchased from a superior provider. I think this is a very unethical company as not only does their product not work but they stop responding after some time. I’ll continue to pursue this issue until I get a full refund and apology. UPDATE: I have since been contacted by Airalo with an apology and a credit to use on my next trip. Hopefully there are no issues next time and the E-SIM works as advertised..Version: 1.34.0

Terrible Customer ServiceI recently purchased an eSIM advertised to last a year. Upon receiving the new iPhone at the end of September, I completed all necessary backups and transfers, including the eSIM. However, upon attempting to use the eSIM, it failed to function and was inexplicably considered deleted. The lack of responsiveness and helpfulness from customer service exacerbates the issue. Despite numerous interactions with the support team, I have not received any response nor any help. This experience has been highly disappointing, highlighting a significant failure in customer service support.Version: 1.42.0

DisappointingThe first sim I purchased did not install correctly on the first attempt, and as a result was unable to activate it at all. So i deleted it and started the process again by purchasing a new sim with less GB so as to not lose as much $ if it was not successful in installing again. This one worked, and for 2 days the data was great, super fast and reliable. My partners was the same (his sim worked on the first try) but after a couple of days, it was so slow, almost to the point of not being able to load anything including google maps, which was incredibly frustrating as we thought we could rely on the internet to navigate our way around. We did some research, which suggested that higher density populated areas could result in this, as you are a lower priority within the network. We were in Japan, so as you can imagine it was very busy. But when we left the cities and were rural, the sim was still just as slow for the remainder of the trip and we ended up just giving up on it and spent a fortune using our Telstra daily roaming plan at $10 a day. After reading such great reviews we had high hopes for this one but it was really such a frustrating waste of money and time.Version: 1.29.0

Would never recommendSuper complicated, been with customer service a long time and no one is answering, only the robot in the chat answers me. My eSIM was installed but just didn’t work, so I wanted to get a refund and start again, but I couldn’t have any assistance. I’m really possed to have waisted my money, since I’m a teen living in an appartment who has to pay all of her bills by herself..Version: 1.42.0

Works, but customer experience could be betterWhen I tried to install my eSIM, I got an error message saying it had not been installed properly, but I knew *something* had been installed because I had new options in the Cellular area of my settings and the contact names had been replaced by phone numbers in my Messages app. My phone asked me some questions that I did not recall being in the instructions provided by Airalo. I contacted Airalo through the app’s built-in support chat, and it took about half an hour to get a representative. They assured me that my eSIM had been installed. After I got to my destination, I fiddled around with the eSIM configuration until I got service, which fluctuated between 4G and 3G and EDGE. This isn’t Airalo’s fault, but having EDGE service at an international airport in a major urban center was surprising. I don’t know if maybe there’s another carrier with better coverage in that location that Airalo could use instead. Maybe I overcomplicated things, but the app and the documentation could do better at guiding you through the process of installing, configuring, and then uninstalling and reverting to your regular eSIM..Version: 1.37.0

Scam CompanyBought an eSIM. My phone is an iPhone that meets the requirements stated on their website. The eSIM would not install despite spending a couple of hours trying to fix the issue. I contacted them and asked for a refund, in accordance with the law in my country (UK, 14 days refund for any online purchase for any reason). They refused several times, even though I was very clear on what the law said and what I would do if they didn’t comply. They told me that UK law doesn’t apply to them as they are in Singapore (which is incorrect). As I paid for my subscription with a UK credit card (Amex), I completed a request for a s75 refund from them for non provision of service, which was completed. I got my money back, but not due to Airalo being cooperative. As I told them, if enough of us do this then eventually their ability to process payments via these providers will be cut off. I would strongly recommend against using this company for any reason. The app doesn’t do what it says it does, and they refuse to believe that consumer law applies to them..Version: 1.39.1

No responseI sent several text to inquire why I could not make calls with a toll free 1-800 and nobody got back to me. Will h my global plan where can I call?.Version: 1.42.0

Non functional and no supportDecided to try an esim for a trip to the UK. Had issues immediately when trying to purchase before I left the states which should have been my sign to just buy a physical sim on arrival. Contacted support and received a boilerplate response which suggested I check all the things I told them I had checked already and never received a follow up reply to my response. Was finally able to purchase and install the appropriate esim upon arrival to our destination so I thought all would be well but now can’t connect to the cellular network using the esim. Thinking it might be my phone, I enabled my regular sim and was able to connect immediately proving network availability and phone compatibility. Attempted to contact support without any response except an incoming call offering me travel insurance within 5 minutes of sending my support request. Maybe a coincidence but seems a bit suspect. Thankfully WiFi seems to be pretty broadly available but a local physical sim is in my near future and as well as a transaction dispute to my credit card company to attempt to get my money back. I couldn’t resist the promised convenience of an esim for my trip but the time wasted trying to get it to work has definitely turned me off Airalo for any future travels..Version: 1.29.0

Unethical? This app uses review gatekeeping, making user reviews biased..Version: 1.42.0

Really terrible experienceI don’t write reviews ever but people need to hear my experience. I’m sure this doesn’t happen much as it seems many people really like this company, but they really failed me. I arrived in Italy and turned on my esim as I was supposed to. It said it was connected, but I could not access any data. After struggling for an hour to get the data to work or to connect to public wifi I sucked it up and paid international fees for my plan back home. After HOURS talking to customer service they realized there was an issue with their provider and told me it would be fixed. The next day It was working, except for the fact that iMessages wouldn’t send. One of their recommendations involved me turning on my plan back home (with them saying it wouldn’t charge me anything), which worked but charged me in full on my home plan. Don’t worry though, they offered me a refund if I returned their esim (which would leave me completely without connection abroad) or they gave me 25% off a future purchase done by the end of May (capped at $7 while the international fees Alone cost me $30+). Again, I’m sure this doesn’t happen for everyone as most people love this company - I’ve just had a really really bad experience with them and would not recommend them to anyone..Version: 1.22.0

Frustrating processThis app can work well BUT the set up is complicated. If there is an error/mistake it is very hard to overcome. The support crew are helpful but I found sometimes they couldn’t rectify the issue quickly. I wasted a lot of time and money waiting for issues to be sorted- and you need internet to correspond with them, so you have to go somewhere that has wifi. I have been travelling in South America and found using their ESim system very frustrating. I don’t recommend..Version: 1.33.0

Lost eSIM and was not supported by the team to have it reinstatedI recently bought an eSIM that is supposed to be good for a year. The new iPhone came end of September. Had all my data backup done and the transfer to the new phone was done including the eSIM. But when you try to use the eSIM. It would not work. It was considered deleted. I have been going back and forth with the support team, and they told me that I will be given credit to purchase a new eSIM, instead of just reinstating it! This is very disappointing..Version: 1.34.2

Too little data for time allocatedLove the app and ease of acquiring this service, but if travelling the allocated data isn’t, by far, enough if you are using location services and trying to get to places in cities. It’s ok if you can hook into wifi, but you have to add data on to your pack as you’ll run out of data otherwise, so cost mounts up! Be aware.Version: 1.29.0

A bit unreliableI used Airolo on a 6 week trip covering Europe, the UK and Japan. In short, it worked pretty well in large cities, but the Scottish Highlands, the Rhine and parts of Switzerland were beyond its capabilities. In Japan, it took 3 days and many messages to management to actually bring the eSim to life. This mystified me as it’s generally very well reviewed and seems to work for most people. I’m disappointed that it was not reliable for me. I’m suspicious of apps that require a second device (or worse still, internet access - isn’t that what you’re paying for?) before they can be installed or activated. Great idea - needs some work to sort out the issues..Version: 1.34.2

International sim cardDoesn’t work well and difficult to get activated.Version: 1.42.0

Fantastic App!This was my first time using Airalo’s app and I was very pleased. It was easy to install on my phone and fairly simple for me to get it working, I didn’t need my teenaged son to help me at all! I will definitely use it again the next time I travel out of country. 🙂.Version: 1.29.0

Terrible at solving issuesI want to love this company so much as their app is clean and easy to use. However EVERY time I have bought an eSIM (there’s been around 10 esims I’ve bought) it has NEVER worked out of the box. It ALWAYS requires APN setting changes and Support emails - and I’m currently in a situation where it simply will not work at all. I’m an advanced user with solid understand of how to set these up and change settings but they need to do better with making the installations seamless with correct apn settings from the get go. I’m now in an endless loop with their robotic employees sending me the same macro responses that don’t actually solve anything. A traditional physical sim is definitely a better option if you’re not 100% sure of getting your fingers digitally dirty in the back end of your phone settings. Do better Airalo..Version: 1.37.0

Pass! Buy another esimMe and 7 other friends bought this esim for a trip to Bali Indonesia. I typically buy Holafly, but this esim was a little bit cheaper and had great reviews. I have never had issues with an esim before with Holafly, and the service was always great. Skip to Airalo, and my esim stopped providing service for exactly 24 hours. I did absolutely everything I could, reset my network, turned off/on my phone, switched off/on the network etc… I know my way around an iphone and I was able to deduce the issue being on the Airalo esim. After contacting support and getting a reply 7 hours later, they were of no help. Finally my esim started working again magically 24 hours after it stopped working. Airalo provided no assistance or compensation because “they were unable to run troubleshooting steps” (maybe if they replied quicker they would have told me to do exactly what I already did). I had to pay the $10 for my personal cellular data to kick in for the data to make up for the lack of internet I had for the 24 hours. 2 of my friends had the same issue, although 1 of them had the issue for 72 hours. I would stay away from Airalo, the product is subpar, and if I’m paying for service, I would rather ensure it work for the entirety of my trip. Also a support chat that would allow me to have the issue fixed/ get a new sim card within an hour would be nice..Version: 1.29.0

Customer Service and Instructions are uselessI’ve been sitting in an Internet cafe over Sears while my party has left without me. I’ve been here for 7 hours trying to get my issue resolved. The esim will not connect to the data I purchased and customer support has been absolutely garbage with returning messages. They have officially ruined the first leg of my vacation. Screw them!.Version: 1.32.1

Caribbean travellerI thought the Airalo eSIM would be great for me while sailing between islands in the Caribbean but my experience has not been good and I’ve reverted to physical SIMs. Being able to keep my home SIM active for data as well as a local eSIM for phone calls was great for the few occasions when it worked but having got it to work in Montserrat, I then really struggled to get it to work in Antigua. Tech support was very good but even with my electronic engineering degree it took literally hours to get it working again. And of course you need to be connected to the internet (eg wifi in a cafe) before you can even start the process, which makes it no better than buying a physical SIM card from a local shop. My wife is even more qualified than me and she failed to get hers working in Antigua at all. I compared all my settings with hers but could not find a reason for it. Also, Airalo don’t always choose the best service provider and in our case the one they chose kept dropping in and out. Then, when we went to switch back to a physical SIM card with a reliable service provider, the shop took another two hours to get our phones working with physical SIMs again. Altogether a painful (and relatively expensive) experience so I won’t be recommending Airalo to anyone. Hopefully other users are having a better experience..Version: 1.40.0

Total failIt must be me because I could not get this thing to work and there was no way Airolo was giving me a refund because it contended their end was not the problem. In my defence, I found the instructions difficult to follow if the install didn't go smoothly and the help function is all by email unless you have luck and can access their chat - which when I tried had a response time of "under two hours." I find, when you're on vacation in a foreign country, waiting anywhere around two hours for help isn't a high value offer. Otherwise they wanted five screen shots and other requirements that chewed up a lot of time. I had read great things about this app and service so can only conclude it's great if it works, but if my experience is any indication it's a lot of work if it doesn't. I think it does work, based on the reviews, but it didn't for and support was a complete let down..Version: 1.24.0

Pretty negative experienceI bought a 15 day eSIM for Thailand and followed the installation instructions which noted you could install the sim beforehand and activate it at the destination. However my usage expired 9 days into my trip. Support informed me that usage starts from the installation date and there was nothing they could do, which left me without data for the remainder of my trip. I was not in Thailand for 6 days that I was charged for usage, which is unfair because the service was not being used at all and I was bearing no cost to the provider. The support person told me they recommend installing a day before travelling which was not noted anywhere in the installation instructions. I was given a $10 credit to my account which is useless to me and I felt like I was being blamed for being prepared and installing the eSIM on a stable internet connection ahead of time. I would not recommend this service..Version: 1.38.0

Paid for a big package didn’t get anythingUsed it a couple times for 5gig data worked fine seemed to blow thru it so bought 10gig and it wouldn’t work now have to top up might just go to 7-11 and get a sim cause they are way cheaper in Thailand then what these guys offer.Version: 1.42.0

UselessI used Airalo a few weeks back on my last trip, followed all the instructions to install my eSim, yet it wasn’t working when I wasn’t in a wifi zone. I reached out to them for help as I done everything correctly, I received no response whatsoever from them and managed to resolve the issue myself. I’m away on holiday again and used this app again with hopes last time was a one off- wrong! I bought my eSim two days ago and it hasn’t worked at all! I have tried to solve it myself again but this time I can’t, I have reached out 3 times via the ‘contact us’ and helpline, no response at all!! Considering I followed the instructions correctly and attempted multiple times for help, Airalo is absolutely useless and a waste of money!! Not to mention this has also happened to my friend, who also had no response after they gave their money to this app… avoid and go with more reputable/ trustworthy company..Version: 1.32.0

Literally the worst - AVOIDThe 5 star reviews on this app are fake. I purchased an eSIM because Airalo advertised I would be able to receive iMessages and there would be prompt support. Wrong. I have not been able to receive iMessages at all while abroad. It has taken 3 days to even get a response to my support request. This has made my travel so difficult :( Never trust Airalo, their advertising is false, their positive reviews are all fake and they don’t care if your trip is ruined. Zero stars. Update: I requested a refund since Airalo did not give me what I paid for. Airalo refused and said I could only have a partial credit. So now I can attest that Airalo does not comply with the Australian Consumer Law. Don’t trust them when they say they will “make it right”. Everything they say is a lie. I hope this review will help other travellers avoid having their holidays ruined by this scam company..Version: 1.27.0

Auto top upThe app is easy to use and simple dashboard reports usage at a glance BUT Airalo let’s all this down with its failure to reliably Topping Up data. Airalo sends an email following a Top Up order notifying you “not to worry, your top up package will activate automatically when your existing package runs out”. This happens most of the time but when it fails to do this you have no data and can’t even access your account via the App. Interrogation of their system will show the refresher package as FINISHED and elsewhere as NOT ACTIVATED. This is poor software system communication. Their response is to check the eSIM in question but you cannot access it given you are forced to ORDER a new top up to get data. There maybe a reporting problem with a failure to advise NEW top up is now ACTIVE (when this cuts in) NEW TOP up is about to gets to 25% and you need to top up. In this instance there was a failure to do so..Version: 1.34.0
