Savvy navvy: Boat Navigation for Negative User Reviews

Very hopeful...very disappointed! It “kinda” works on my smartphone when I am on grid. Off-grid it does not work at all. And it never even will open on my ipad, which is why I paid fof the full annual fee. When I CAN get it to work, it is great. No help from staff when I explained my problems—not that they did not want to, they did, but they could not figure anything out. Too new and untested is my estimation..Version: 1.1.51

Need a refundMap of Gippsland Lakes in Victoria Australia only showing navigation aids for Lakes Entrance I need it for the whole lakes system so this is rubbish for my purposes.Version: 1.1.112

One subscriptionSave yourself the time in downloading the app only to be faced with subscription fee. You know it’s a con when they can’t advertise the fee’s in the description..Version: 1.1.52

Where are the free features?Looks like you have to pay $70 a year. If it’s a good app, that’s probably worth it for some. But the info says a bunch of free features, which don’t seem to be provided. Looks like you have to become a member and pay to get anything. If that’s the way it is, that’s fine, except that the info shouldn’t claim to provide “free” features. ☹️.Version: 2.1.242

In progressI signed up for the free 2 week trial, loved the interface and useability. For a power boater the explore plan is nice and comparable to navionics. I upgraded the trial to the elite hoping the addition of currents would provide better time calculations. Once up graded the app told me the route was too long and couldn’t calculate (42 NM). Also the currents were not available in my area. No point upgrading to elite in the Pacific Northwest. The explore package is nice that the wind data is overplayed on the chart and weather updated at each point on the route. For now I think I will stick with Navionics because it is cheaper and look at Windy too. I will continue watch this app, if the can incorporate currents into the route calculations I think it would be worth every penny!.Version: 1.1.80

Little Information on chartsThe charts offer limited information on bridges. There is no way to zero in on a bridge and find out any information except height. For example, their chart for the Atlantic Highlands Route 36 Bridge in NJ is shown but not named. So no name but shows height but nothing else. No contact info, no width, no date of survey, no general comments from other users. And finally some kind of red mark on bridge. If that color is for where to pass under bridge then that is false information. I contacted the company and they said they are working on it. However, they advertise that this is the only app a captain needs..Version: 1.1.87

Missing too many features for serious navigationUnfortunately this app isn’t (yet) suitable for serious navigators. Its lacking the ability to feed NMEA data in, so you’re stuck if your device does not have GPS. No depth or wind info from your nav instruments. Crucially no AIS support either. Then we move onto the huge holes in the chart areas. Having sailed from the UK to Australia, there seems to be reasonable coverage for those areas but as I continue west, I see that Indonesia and most of the Indian Ocean isn’t covered. I’m also not sure how well the chart download works - it doesn’t seem to clearly show me the areas I’ve downloaded for offline use. I’ll give this more of a try offshore in the coming days (without data). For now, I’m sticking with iSailor for my serious navigation but I will check back periodically especially if the NMEA and AIS feeds become possible (as a hint I’d like to be able to set an IP address and port number that Savvy Navvy connects to using TCP to get NMEA/AIS data)..Version: 1.1.108

Don’t downloadI downloaded this app and Subscribed to get the two week free trail.. it would not move off the trail. I couldn’t use the app at all it just kept telling me I had already subscribed.. totally useless..Version: 1.1.108

Not very usefulFor the entry price I find it not worth the money. You should be able to download maps, satellite overlay and get better depth contours..Version: 1.1.80

Disappointed Broads userI purchased the Ap to use on the Norfolk Broads and hoped I could download cartography however it seems the mapping is web-based. As wi fi and data is very patchy in the Broads national park the Ap only worked intermittently. If I have missed something in the setup I apologise for this poor review. Unfortunately I was too late cancelling the 2 week free trial period so have been charged for a year..Version: 2.2.8745

Price.?Can’t find the price anywhere in the advertising..?.Version: 2.1.223

With our halving to pay for tOk stupidest app ever V.Version: 1.1.145

Seriously disappointedSigned up for the app and did the 2 week trial. Went to plot a course from one location to another that was approx 19nm the app wouldn’t give the navigation as the 2 points were too far apart. I was lucky I knew the way already and can easily read beacons etc but wanted to give this a go for future navigational aid but ended up cancelling subscription and deleting the app.Version: 2.1.242

Not ready for Gold CoastMissing markers.Version: 1.1.51

Savvy navvyHard to use. Most gps better..Version: 1.1.76

Not a serious navigation app1. Charts are basic 2. Details on maps are novice level 3. Sat overlay is not high def 4. Routing is point to point - not automatic This was not designed by anyone who is a serious boater. A waste of money..Version: 1.1.74

Missing advertised pointsNot impressed at all. Paid the $129 subscription so I could have peace of mind with the anchor alarm bud its not simple to use. With further use of this app I have found the weather report extremely inaccurate. Telling me winds where 15 kms with no swell height when actually they where 25 knots with a 2 meter swell and completely wrong wind direction. DO NOT trust the weather report on this app. The actual GPS mapping is good so far but only use it as an aid..Version: 2.2.253

Savvy navvyNo where in the discrimination does it state prescription! Doesn’t even say “in - app purchases “ waste of time.Version: 2.1.242

Credit card grab. It’s just a website in an app wrapper to grab your credit card. You can’t try the app until you give them payment info. No free version..Version: 2.1.242

Clunky terribleDownloaded to pre plan a trip a to Norfolkbroads it came up when googling looking for a app to help. The thing just is so clunky wouldn’t get out of wanting to take me from my current position. When I I finally managed to drag it from my start point on the broads and navigate to what I’m hoping to be out first stop. To which it said there was no route even though I could see the route myself.Version: 2.2.8683

Always with the “premium” features.Hate apps like this that give ya nothing with the free version. If you wanna make a paid app, just make it a paid app. This app doesn’t seem to have the lake mapped out right. Everything in North Carolina half looked right but the Virginia half of Kerr Lake is green. What am I not understanding about this app? The app is not super self intuitive. You can’t use a sati lite view without “premium”. Was able to just use my car gps to find my way better. Not impressed..Version: 2.2.6601

Don’t waste your moneyIf it was truly free it would be worth a look but they won’t let you try it without putting in cc info. I wanted to try it first to see if a particular area was covered by the charts but am not giving them my cc info to find out. Also, there are numerous free apps out there which use NOAA and other free sources to show maps like this, my bet is your just paying for free info with shiny packaging. No thanks..Version: 1.1.108

Not that great. BewareBe careful if you are trying this on 2 devices, I canceled the trial on one device but it continued on the other. There are better aps available..Version: 1.1.80

No goodThe payment model is rubbish. Start the trial, don’t like it, forget about it, suddenly you’re being charged. We want a clear opt in model. Not “pay unless you remember to opt out” model..Version: 1.1.108

Slow slowMaybe because it’s the free version but this is slow. I put in a start and finish and it’s started plotting. 10 minutes later still working.Version: 1.1.163

Good - but....Good app but limited use unless you pay for the most expensive subscription option ( which is eye watering) as downloading to your chartplotter and seeing the tidal stream info is not available in the basic subscription. An monthly option might be better rather than the yearly subscription as it would make it more accessible to most users..Version: 1.1.18

Haven’t used. The app loaded and I got a chart for our area. However when trying to work through plotting a course it was not intuitive. I have the second highest subscription level but probably will not use much. Tried to find legend for chart symbols to help reference what the app was showing but haven’t found one yet. I would think that was a basic reference tool for the app..Version: 1.1.85

An app I use regularly!I like it’s features and use the weather page every time I sail. Disappointingly it is not always accurate,in fact it is rarely correct but I use it in conjunction with other apps and take an average of all the info which usually gives me a good idea of the likely conditions..Version: 1.1.136

Looks interestingWas finally able to open the app after a glitch. Haven’t used it out on the water yet. Will come back and update soon..Version: 1.1.119

Don’t be fooled it’s not free.Free to download but once app is installed they ask for money to do anything. You get a 3 week trial. Then it’s certainly not cheap..Version: 1.1.101

Trial without purchaseI was hoping to trail the app before actually signing up but it seems I need to sign up first in order to get a free trail. That’s a bit irritating. It would be nice to see the maps and functionality before I give my personal information..Version: 1.1.76

Sucks! This app sucks large. So expensive, sneakily stays on your phone, can’t use half of it unless you pay more .. ads etc sucks!!!!.Version: 1.1.163

Hopeless8/10 times it can’t plot route. Doesn’t seem to know that yachts can tack and don’t need to motor. Changing boat settings doesn’t help either, just stopped it plotting any course. It did show me sailing at 4kn it 2kn of wind though 😂 Every bridge height in Sydney was wrong..Version: 1.1.52

Don’t waste your timeThe app is badly made, great idea though, wait until someone gets a real engineer to make a app like this, but it’s a bit of a homemade job, app keeps crashing( nothing to do with my iPad or internet) It’s not something I’d want to risk running around with, at the moment it’s just google maps with some fancy skins on it. Don’t risk your boat with untrustworthy maps..Version: 1.1.51

One to watch...We downloaded this to trial for 5 days cruise down West Country - whilst it appears easy to use, and has a good UI.... we found the minute we were out of data range (no more than a mile off the coast), nothing worked and the app continually polls for data - resulting in several very dead iPhones very quickly... a lot of potential but until areas of maps can be downloaded it’s of limited use.....Version: 1.1.26

Some nice features but very basic nav infoBased of Navionics this doesn’t compare. Navionics has updating soundings, colored sonar deaths, does have an auto piloting system, very detailed chart info with active captain and many more options. Mainly the only cool thing is the description for each waypoint and the easy of plotting..Version: 1.1.80

Not useableI can’t figure out how to enter “navigation” mode. When I put in the GPS of my destination, all it does is give me the options of “show details,” “preview,” “clear,” “modify,” “save,” or “share. There’s no “navigate button” or whatever. I need something truly like Google Maps, where I can hit a button and get turn-by-turn directions. That’s the experience Savvy Navvy promises … and it falls short 😒.Version: 1.1.163

MostlyIt’s great when it works but can unstable it’s annoying.Version: 1.1.136

Not quite as good as it first might seemThe potential for Savvy Navv as a passage planning tool is considerable. It’s drawbacks are that it simply does not (yet) have all the information needed for its use as an onboard navigation app. There is, for example, no facility to view light or mark characteristics, and no tidal height information, or means of plotting position lines that are not part of a route. Given, therefore, that other apps will be required if navigation is being done electronically, Savvy Navvy is not a complete solution. You will still need a tidal height almanac a nautical almanac and a plotter app. That would be fine other than the pricing of Savvy Navvy being pitched as if it does the lot. Nearly £100 just for an offline passage planner is just too much. And as the Basic Plan relies on constant connectivity, that’s not much use either despite its lower cost. In summary, a good idea, bags of potential but not yet either complete or realistically priced. Really responsive support though and really nice visuals etc. I wish them well but it is not right for me or responsible navigators looking for a complete package (yet)..Version: 1.0.104

Looks Promising but...Similar to other comments from Australian sailors, the maps tend to miss out some important data. The very first route I tried did not show significant powerlines on my chosen route, although Navionics does show them..Version: 1.1.71

Not useful at all2 week free trial should include all features. Used on a local fishing trip and found the charts in the Nassau Sound were not correct due to a sandbar and when trying to select satellite view, unable to use because it’s an upgrade. Tide information is not available for the same reason. I had to use other apps to get the information I needed..Version: 1.1.100

Clunky and expensiveCould not get past the first page without a glitch. After entering boat’s minimum depth I was stuck - there was no next arrow and going back just took me in the same loop. No trial period to test the features..Version: 1.1.51

Waypoint points of interest and tracksHappy so far with the app. Cheaper than buying a chart plotter for the expected time I might have a boat. I was wondering if you can add waypoints for points of interest vs just to plot a route? And why don’t my saved tracks stay on my screen so I can easily follow a previous route?.Version: 2.2.7916

Has lots of potentialBUT - each route I have asked it plan has be navigating over sandbars, land and in one case not following a well marked channel in favor of a 100% non-navicable route. Perhaps using this for "inshore" planning not its strong suit. If that is the case, they should mention that right upfront. Right now it definitely a waste of money, at least for me..Version: 2.2.9162

No Good for NZAlmost all aspects of the data provided were inaccurate with the actual conditions on the water. Wind direction and speed were completely off. Tide data was incorrect compared with local data providers. Not recommended for New Zealand..Version: 1.1.55

Can’t even startThe app wants you to open account and start free trial before you can even check what it is all about. I close the app before starting trial. Now it is a white screen when I tried to start it again. If you don’t like being forced into subscription before even having possibility to try an app - just don’t bother. I deleted it..Version: 1.1.145

Interface is good, useless in Western CanadaThe currents aren’t available around Vancouver Island, no point in upgrading for something I can’t use..Version: 1.1.80

Good interface but search and routing ruins it for meIt seems like it has potential but whenever I search for a location to navigate to somewhere it shows me options for “similar” places very far away from me (in Boston). E.g. George’s Island in Greece and Minnesota. Cohasset shows me California and then Cohasset high school. Also I can’t pin my destination and then just route. I have to select manually my original location and the mark point B. Done for now, may check it out in a few months..Version: 1.1.80

Enjoying this app moreThis is a really great app with so many features . However I am sailing to Norway from london so the gap in maps is a real issue as I will need to compensate with lots of other apps to get the charts I need . Most of Denmark is missing so that’s a bit of a problem . I think once there are more joined up routes and missing map sections this will be a 5 star app.Version: 1.1.119

Not quite there yetDefinitely the best app in terms of aesthetics and modern fresh look. Easy to read etc. There’s a few bugs with launching and crashing and also incomplete maps for eastern Australia. The support is really fast to respond. I ended up subscribing to a different app, but I’ll definitely consider coming back to savvy if they get the app more stable and complete!.Version: 1.1.149

App didn’t pull weather information and then poor customer serviceI bought this app on 23rd March 2023 ahead of a long passage. After downloading I entered the route. App constantly saying that it couldn’t gain weather information for the coming days on the route. I requested a refund straight away on 23rd March never received a response until the 13th May 2023. Savvy Navvy have said they can’t process a refund for me as I paid for it through Apple App Store. I’m assuming money goes from Apple to you the developer, so why can’t you process a refund? Customer Service in my case has been terrible..Version: 2.2.5542

Utter garbageThis app, is truly the most clunky, slow, dimwitted, and frustrating app I have ever used. This IS NOT something that I would ever rely on at sea. The chartplotting function is painful slow to calculate longer routes and if you move the waypoint you may as well start again. Zooming in and out takes an unacceptable amount of time to render the map, so much so, it is a danger to rely on when navigating tighter areas. I’m glad this was a free download I got with my insurance policy, I would be irate if I’d paid money for this. Even if this was a free app I’d spend money on navionics.Version: 2.2.9162
