Filmic Firstlight - Photo App for Negative User Reviews

No support availableJust purchased this app. Quite happy with initial use. However tried to access and contact support but the website just does not allow a question to be sent. I wanted to enquire if a zoom feature exists to zoom in or out of the subject such as the pinch function in the iPhone camera. Can anyone assist ? Thanks.Version: 1.0.6

Subscription paymentNot keen on the Adobe-style subscription for features that I can get for free from other apps. Would have paid a one-time purchase as I have for Filmic Pro. Removed the app..Version: 1.0.4

Subscription based, no option to buySubscription based? No thank you, I’ll pass.Version: 1.0.2

Haven’t really delved since.Loaded it and it seems a nice layout. BUT the pricing model to access the features that this is only going to be used for, are £1 a month or £8 a year. Don’t know why developers don’t get it. People hate subscriptions. Also people hate paying yearly for a program. I will be doing neither so it’s been uninstalled..Version: 1.0.2

Requires photos AND notifications permissionThis app will not even start unless you have provided it access to all of your photos and videos (this is fairly standard but not necessary). It’s taken to a new low by requiring you to switch on notifications for the app if you want to even get into to the app for a look around. Obviously I declined these permissions so I don’t know what the app is like. FYI - an app could ask for ‘Write only’ Photos permission (required to save photos to your camera roll) but most, like this one, ask for ‘Read and Write’ permission. There are innocent reasons to “read” all of my photos and videos but there are a lot more less-innocent reasons too - reasons that can make companies a lot of money..Version: 1.0.2

After Filmic Pro this was a disappointmentI don’t understand how an app provides less functionality and fewer intuitive features than the default Apple camera app on my iPhone 12 Pro. Filmic Pro offers a much better and user friendly video experience so I thought for sure this app would up my photography game on my new phone. I paid $8 for something I literally never use. Huge disappointment..Version: 1.1.2

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEYThis app is crap. It only gives you a few options nothing special. I have better control over the camera with my phone without the app. It only gives you 3 choices for Iso AE , 200 or 1500 nothing more and no control over shutter speed. Only gives you control of exposure thats all. Super disappointed I wasted my money. I rather use the phone camera than the app. Wish I can get my money back.Version: 1.2.3

Waste of moneyForces you to give all access permissions or will not work at all..Version: 1.1.2

Unintuitive, not what I was expectingI love Filmic Pro for video. Everything about their app makes sense to me, and I regretted only that I couldn’t use it to take stills. Unfortunately, this app is not that. Their interface is unintuitive, and I some how got it locked in a weird high ISO mode where every picture I take is distorted and awful. I’m sure I just don’t know how to use the app, but it doesn’t make sense to me. Would love a filmic pro for stills, though, and would gladly pay $8 for that app..Version: 1.0.6

Interface really needs work.Nice addition but the interface really lacks. Not a fan of the rounded corners especially since the final photo does not have them nor does your video app. And just like the video app would be nice to have the shutter button top right when shooting landscape, a bit more convenient for one handed use. Also gets annoying that switching lenses takes two taps. So just to see my zoom lens and then go back takes 4 taps! After a while that gets ridiculous. Biggest annoyance is that my iPhone rotation setting reverts my options for exposure and focus gestures. Very bad. That setting should have no effect on a camera app. Settings area could also use a redesign. Independent focus tap would be handy as well since after setting my exposure I cannot refocus without resetting exposure. Can’t quit app without having to swipe up twice. Can’t even swipe to another app on iPhone X..Version: 1.0.6

Not for the iPhone 14 Pro MaxWhen selecting the main camera the app takes 12mp size (pixels) thus not taking advantage of the 48mp camera!.Version: 1.3.0

ZoomI can’t figure out how to zoom on this app. The tutorial says to press the lens tray but I only get a selfie option. Where are the other lens options??.Version: 1.1.2

Don’t buy for serious photographyI like the filmic pro video app but filmic pro firstlight is a stripped down version of the iphone camera app with “filters” and focus peaking. You cannot control white balance, iso and shutter simultaneously, can’t change f stop, etc. I think in their attempt to make a simple interface they made a overly simplistic camera app that is not better than the stock iphone camera app. You can apply film grain, vignettes in post and don’t need a “camera app” to apply them at the time of capture. That is the main feature of this app. It seems harsh but this was a total waste of $8. Please do not make the same mistake..Version: 1.2.4

Unbelievably bad compared to FilmicProI had high expectations after falling in love with Filmic Pro. They were massively disappointed. This is a terrible app by any standard, and certainly for the company that has designed the app that is gold standard in videography. The executive that gave this project the greenlight should be fired. This dramatically undermines the brand in my opinion. Now I cannot trust whether or not a product that comes from Filmic will be good..Version: 1.2.4

Almost perfectCould we get the option to save only ProRaw? Not ProRaw+HEIC? There also seems to be a bug where the regular raw format is saved blurry/pixelated, as if the automatic post processing doesn’t execute or something..Version: 1.3.0

DisappointedI love filmic pro and I paid for the add on, cinematographers pack. But well done filmic, you have successfully put me off your future products 100% by introducing the subscription format to your latest photo app. I will be staying away from your products from now on, and I hope that you take this review constructively. Nobody wants to pay monthly for an app with features available in countless other free apps. Well done, you’ve taken a huge step backwards in adding subscription based pricing. If you ever do that for filmic pro in the new app, I will be out of your products for good, 100%. I hope that won’t be the case..Version: 1.0.2

No Portrait ModeI wish I'd known that Portrait Mode is not available within this app. It's nice to be able to swipe up/down and left/right for exposure and focus, but the Portrait Mode function appears to be available only in the Apple camera app. So I just paid for an app that I'll never use. Deleting now..Version: 1.1.2

Doesn’t support “selected photos” privacy featureApple introduced a feature where you could allow an app to just have access to a selected set of photos and not the entire photo library. Firstlight is one of the many apps that still requires access to the entire photo library. I value my privacy and don’t want to give access to the entire photo library, which means Firstlight doesn’t work at all..Version: 1.2

Don’t waste your moneyPretty terrible application. I signed up for the free trial but they make it impossible to cancel it. The app doesn’t have half of the functions you would expect and all my pictures are being saved blurry even though the shot was clear as?.Version: 1.4.1

Argh, Hate Subscription Model PricingApp looks promising but then In realised it has a subscription based model for the extra features and I despise them. I have purchased Filmic Pro and it’s extras all with a one off purchase which I am more than happy with and would have done the same easily. I can’t see how you can justify milking your customers for $12.99 pa when there are many free camera apps with many of the features you off as premium. Hope that in the future you change the pricing model.Version: 1.0.2

A UI designed for photographers.Update: Great to see a new update for the app, but sad there still isn’t support for persisting the image type (japes/RAW etc) across uses This app is fantastic for landscape photography. Its developer realised that for snaps you can’t better the built in camera app, but for when you want manual controls (eg setting ISO to minimise noise and maximise dynamic range) this app puts you straight in that mode. The cross swipe for exposure and focus means I am straight into adjusting those without studying buttons, menus and making precise swipes. Direct access to exposure and focus changes is made even better with the zebras and peaking complementing these two features. There are two fiddly bits that get annoying - as I have to reset them every time I launch the app: 1) The app doesn’t persist the file type for each lens. I want to always be shooting RAW on wide and tele, but I have to reset every time. 2) Setting the ISO to lowest every time is a pain. In an ideal world I would love each lens to remember I left it on ISO priority and which value. As a pragmatic solution, I wish it didn’t loop from lowest to highest ISO - as this means I can’t just spin to the lowest and know it will stop at that value, it just goes round and round. Overall a great app with fantastic user interface that isn’t over burdening with annoying feature creep. Though a level would be a wonderful addition :-).Version: 1.2

RubbishUsing tele on my Iphone 14 pro just provides crop of 9mm lens of very poor quality..Version: 1.4.6

I’d vote zero if I couldSubscription model that’s all you need to know there are plenty of apps out there that are once of payments that do exactly the same as this app with out the ridiculous subscription model. I am so sick of subscription models on apps now. Your Filmic Pro app is a once off payment why isn’t this?.Version: 1.0.3

More subscription garbage = NO THANK YOUHere’s a heads up for you, I purchased Filmic Pro and the Cinema upgrade using one-time purchase gladly, and have been to thrilled with that app and being able to OWN it and not be billed monthly! For an app that really offers NOTHING new over some of the other apps in this genre now available, ones who I can pay one-time for and be done with (Halide), you expect me to pay a MONTHLY FEE for a CAMERA APP??? You guys are out to lunch, and the feedback being left on DPREVIEW about this app reflects that BIGTIME. And do NOT bother responding to this with your canned “Well we wanted to offer it for free to demonstrate” crap response, not interested in copy and paste PR speak..Version: 1.0.3

Impossible to useThe app is very hard to navigate and then when there is something you want to use you have to pay an extra subscription.Version: 1.0.6

2 Red FlagsA very big “NO” to tracking apps. Why does a photo app need to track its users. Looks like dishonest activity to me. A very big “NO” to subscriptions. That is the whole reason I abandoned all Adobe apps. I won’t buy it..Version: 1.4.6

Not something I am going to pay forNot sure why this app is not one time pay and that’s it. The App Store is full of other great apps you can pay for one time and that’s it..Version: 1.0.4

Just Not Very GoodI didn’t get far enough into this app to start complaining about its subscription model. Instead, I stopped using it because it doesn’t come close to the native camera app in the quality of its output (on 14 Pro). I’m generally very disappointed with the camera on my iPhone having made the switch from other brands. Most of that disappointment comes from my inability to manually control the capture settings on the phone. This app is no better than the native app in that regard. It pretends you have manual control by letting you set one of either ISO or exposure time, with the setting you don’t choose being determined automatically. In a word, it’s awful. Full automatic is better. Admittedly, the native app sometimes produces wonderful photographs. I’ve never managed to get a comparable quality out of this app when doing side-by-side. It’s always a step or several behind in the fidelity it produces - you’ll get better post-processing options from the native app. It’s slower than the native app and eats battery. I shot a few dozen pics in the native app and the battery didn’t move one percent. I switched to this app and the battery plummeted 10% in minutes. More than anything, I can’t believe the native app is so poor on iPhone that these alternative apps are almost a necessity. I thought they were supposed to be premium devices? My old Lumia phones take better pictures. The hardware may be very outdated on those phones by now, but they had full manual control that let the user shoot the picture they wanted. What a rubbish camera platform iPhone has in comparison..Version: 1.4.2

So disappointed 😔When I saw that Filmic made a still photo app I stopped reading the article I was reading immediately and went to go buy it. The camera seems good and simple but I will never use apps that require a subscription unless I have to. I will gladly pay up to $60 for a lifetime purchase but the subscription kills it completely for me. Yea I know that’s “the way of the future” but it’s still disappointing..Version: 1.0.3

Subscription system, a HUGE THUMBS DOWNHate to say it but your package model in FILMIC PRO was very nice, great actually, yet with the subscription model you opted for, this really took a turn for the worst in my opinion and looks like in a lot of your other customers’ opinions! Unless this changes, I will not support or purchase a tier of subscription in the app, and it’s sad because you have a good product... it might not be a crazy expensive subscription but hey things add up REALLY quickly, so yeah big bummer the one time deal payment is out the window now!.Version: 1.0.3

Underwhelming!I read the most critical reviews that mostly pointed out displeasure with the subscription. Now the app is one-time pay. But it really doesn’t have anything that other free apps such as Google’s Snapseed or substantially lower priced Camera +2 doesn’t give. I expected better control over white balance, more film simulation (compare VSCO). Yes, the developer will come back with the usual “better experience “ line, but I’m sorry, they are just riding the success of their video app to pedal a poorly equipped mediocre camera app..Version: 1.0.6

Subscriptions.....I like my other fellow iphoneographers hate subscription services. I might use this App if there was a way to buy outright. The developer might argue that there is a free option, while this is true. The competition and quality in other camera apps sadly means there just isn’t value in this developers attempt. Stock the greedy practice of monthly/yearly subscriptions I might relook at this App otherwise avoid guys simply not good enough compared to other free or buy to keep options..Version: 1.0.3

Great, but missing bulb mode. The app seems great so far, offers a lot of features for manual shooting. But shutter onky goes to 1/1. It needs more options for long exposure photography..Version: 1.2.3

Anamorphic DisasterThis software is supposed to wok with an anamorphic lens and it does…sometimes. But it has a glitch that changes the settings and you have to check every picture to make sure it isn’t squeezed. So many pictures have to be manually desqueezed. The app is unreliable, unfortunately..Version: 1.4.5

5 Stars If ProRAW WorkedContrary to some You Tube reviews I took the plunge and purchased the app. For my needs it works great unless I want to shoot In the Pro RAW mode. Then it combines a lower quality JPG with the DNG such that I cannot revert to only the DNG and thus DNG editors such as RAWPower that I use do not recognize the combined files as RAW so I cannot do RAW editing-a real bummer. Please fix this..Version: 1.2

11ProMax=Grainy PhotosI bought this program based on FilMIC Pro, a great video camera for the 11 Pro Max. I use my phone and gimble for work all the time. This app leaves photos grainy. It also slows the “shutter” speed just enough that anything outside of “extremely steady” shows blur. I checked my settings to make sure everything is how it should be. With no avail I will be deleting this app and just working with either the stock camera and it’s settings or another manual camera app. I would appreciate a refund..Version: 1.0.6

Little improvement over native appSemi-pro user here. Cons: App lags in focus, lens switching. Lacks easy access to other tools that native app has. Portraits can achieved but takes more effort. Aperture priority missing. Pros: focus peaking, ISO and shutter priorities. But overall, just another camera app—not a replacement..Version: 1.3.0

Camera rentalThis is a nice looking app, and I bought and use filmic pro, but this app is requiring a rental agreement to use it. No, sorry. Not for me. And I hate writing this, but I think you’ve got this wrong, I don’t want a subscription to a camera app..Version: 1.0.3

Poor1. jpg quality WORSE than the native camera app. 2. Does NOT auto-rotate stills shot in landscape orientation, native camera app DOES. 3. Does NOT ‘remember’ settings, the native camera app DOES. I want to shoot in raw/dng and it is bloody frustrating when you have to set this EVERY TIME. That’s just for starters. 4. DELETED..Version: 1.2.3

OkSeems pretty good, but I can't find a manual – only a very light tutorial. The pro features look good but there is no way I’m going to enter into a subscription agreement, so I guess I’m going to have to miss out on them. Suggestion: how about adding the ability to capture a shot from each lens on the multi lens iPhones at the same time?.Version: 1.0.4

Good Controls, Doesn’t All WorkI definitely like the manual controls in this app and keep discovering new things each day (I’ve been using it for about two weeks now). However, I want just the raw .dng files and selecting PROraw only files gives me .HEIC files that my phone says are JPG+raw. I hope this gets fixed..Version: 1.3.0

Subscription? No. Will wait for it to be worth it.I think I’m time this could be a really great app like filmic pro for video. At first look the interface is similar to filmic pro... Right off the bat, accessing anything advanced requires a subscription. The greatest thing about the App Store was that you could pay a one time fee to unlock certain features for apps. I completely understand to sustain any business that there needs to be a steady revenues stream long term. I do believe there are other ways to do that other than the subscription model. I can also appreciate the fact that your subscription model is pretty inexpensive. As a user speaking to the manufacturer, I’m not subscribing. Where’s the value? Where is the roadmap outlining what I’m going to get over and above the “advanced” features? You’re basically looking for a way to sustain your business because you did a great thing by charging the one time fee with filmic. If you want to sustain your revenue stream, integrate a adding LUTs, find a way for photographers to load in their own LUTs, get creative. Subscription no thanks... there are other apps that do infinitely more that are a one time charge..Version: 1.0.4

Good, could be betterSome settings are vague, like “burst rate: low, medium, high”? How about the actual numbers4,6,8fps or whatever they are. And anomorphic desqueeze? What’s that? How could it be used? Idk. The UI is great, feels intuitive for the most part, just needs a few tweaks, or maybe even a “pro” version like you have in the filmic pro app for cinematographers... thanks.Version: 1.0.3

PurchaseI still have trouble with the purchase have to restore almost every time I open the app which is frustrating when you have no signal iPhone XS Max ios13.3.Version: 1.0.4

Not stable yetPlus why if i select dng it saves as jpg and raw and the size is 1mb if i would need jpg i will select jpg make raw be raw.Version: 1.2.4

Good but...I really like the app but being a photographer and wanting to work with the original raw files, there is a few set backs compared to FiLMiC Pro. There is no way to export files out as a original "raw" DNG file. Instead it exports as a JPG+RAW as one file which cannot be edited by a program like capture one. Secondly, I would love to see full manual control to Shutter Speed and ISO not one or the other. Lastly, no white balance control... If all 3 of these issues were addressed in a quick/easy and fast way to access and change without feeling clunky. I would absolutely love the FiLMiC suite of apps!.Version: 1.2.6

Maybe it’s me...I just assumed the same quality as Filmic Pro, but the images are soft and the images not even close to Halide and Pro Camera! Maybe I’m not using the right settings but outdoors everything is out of focus, once shot, and the camera reacts in a blurry manner before I press the shutter. JPEG is better but DNG is unusable. Dynamic range is weak. Happy to revisit my assessment if someone can help me figure out the problem. I’m using the latest iPhone 11 Pro Max and watched the tutorial twice to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. I purchased the full annual subscription. Thanks..Version: 1.0.4

Subscription? Are you kidding me?How stupid are companies these days that they think a subscription model for a photo app is a good idea? This is a great way to get your so uninstalled. I supported you with Filmic Pro but this is just ridiculous..Version: 1.0.4

No support for Filmic Remote.Got this because I thought I would be able to control the camera and all features from this app like Indo with Filmic Pronand got very disappointed. If I knew it wouldn’t have bought it.😡.Version: 1.0.6

So much potential!!Great app with a ton more potential! I have used a lot of photo apps Halide, Camerapro, etc.. and find that I am most attracted to Firstlight however I want more control and options in an elegant multi-sensory interface. I have read reviews and it seems like you are open and wanting positive suggestions. So here are a few. Have the swipe and text follow the perspective, make a picture horizontal, your swipe actions are the same as you use vertical. Make swipe options haptic. actually make ae, ISO, and Shutter actions Haptic. Add real time perspective correction. Add a Fibonacci spiral, golden spiral, grid please. Add A dial with haptic feedback to digitally zoom. This would leave the swipe motions alone. Perhaps located where the album is located currently beside the shutter button? A way to adjust white balance would be useful. Ability to add and remove film overlays post picture taking. Ability to choose save location, partner with Adobe lightroom? Use the full 14-bit RAW data in real time when calculating exposure etc…. I hope you take these suggestions in the light they are given as helpful and not critical. If you need other real life Beta testers I would love to be on that list..Version: 1.3.3

Come on!How do you guys go from a near-perfect video app to a half-baked photo app that requires a subscription? I might like this app, I would even buy it if it were a flat fee (Halide says hello), but how or why would I try it any further than what it is now. Thanks for the awesome video app, best of luck with this one..Version: 1.0.3

Subscription model wrong for this type of appIt’s a lovely app, but it’s also the sort of app you expect to pay for just once, not every year. When you change your payment model to sone payment , I will change my review..Version: 1.0.2

A Joke? Not even checked the features. Uninstalled Just when forced to allow permissions to camera, camera roll and (no other option) notifications. Shame on FiLMiC - are You serious?.Version: 1.0.3

UnprofessionalThis app is the worst camera app I’ve used on iPhone, and that’s saying a lot. The focus is way off and the fact that it requires a subscription for basic elements that other apps provide is ludicrous. Although the UI is minimalistic, I shall tell my filmmaker and photographer friends to avoid this app unless the above changes..Version: 1.0.3

Basic appThis app isn’t anything to shout about, it’s free but there is a good reason for that. There’s very little you can do on the free version but I’m sure if you fancy forking our £14+ for the pro version it’s probably quite good. There are a lot better apps out there for free or for very less than the pro version of this app..Version: 1.0.2

Subscription ware for NO GOOD REASONThis may be the best camera app in the universe, but I will not pay a subscription that’s unnecessary. I would pay up to $10 for this app, but will NEVER let their hands into my wallet to let them pull out cash whether I use the app or not....Version: 1.0.4

No Zoom? The developers seemed to have missed adding zoom to the interface. Not a bad app but there are better photography apps available..Version: 1.3.3

Subscription no thanks.Nothing to justify the cost the subscription that no one wants. Make it £8 fully unlocked if you have to. Disappointing and uninstalled..Version: 1.0.3

Subscription app, not for me...I’m so disappointed. I really enjoy Filmic Pro and I will stop updating it and block notifications to be sure it will never became a subscription app too. So, I chosen Moments Pro app instead for photography... sorry guys but I will boycott every subscription app (unless you give a lot of new content EVERY week, there’s no reason)..Version: 1.0.3

Useless for a paid appIt supposed more of a professional camera. I am afraid it’s far from it. You put Some very good feature in it but far from fine tuned. For one why do put these extra features in and you have reset all the settings them every time when you restart the app. The setting should be the same as when you shut the app down. You wast time every time you start it up resetting your settings. If it was anywhere near a professional app you would not have to do this. Now for someone like myself that travels a lot and likes my location saved. Why does this app not save gps to raw format? It’s save it in jpeg. I am afraid this app needs a lot work to be done it considering it a paid app..Version: 1.2.3

App constantly freezesIn iOS 16 with iPhone 14 the app is constantly freezing and makes it basically unusable. There hasn’t been an update for 7 months. Is this app dead?.Version: 1.3.0

Subscription based = avoidIf you want to use RAW or TIF expect to be hit by a subscription fee. Crippled software until you pay an ongoing fee. No thanks, I’ve uninstalled it..Version: 1.0.2

Not like Filmic ProI read that the Filmic Pro team made a camera app, and I bought it. I should have read more. This app gives you no shutter speed/aperture/ISO control. It doesn’t give you much more than the ios camera app does. Save your money for a real app. I wish I had. Filmic Pro is so great - what happened to this one?!?.Version: 1.3.0

Not recommendedVery basic app I only used this app couple of times and I m not recommended this app to anyone..Version: 1.4.4

Auto focus needs work. The auto focus on iPhone 11 Pro when using the zoom lens is bad. It doesn't change to the tapped region. Attempting the same action with the built in camera is responsive and accurate..Version: 1.0.6

You charged meI have used the trial and cancelled it right away the same day...and now you are charging me!! This is so dishonest!.Version: 1.4.2

When is the promised Multi Lens recording going to be included? It’s been a year now - is the promised Multi-Lens recoding ever going to be included for the iPhone 11 Pro? (Yes I know about DoubleTake- not the same though)..Version: 1.1.2

Forgotten by FilmicLots of potential here but the app has been mostly forgotten. I paid for the subscription a couple years ago and in that time First Light as become free, plus we’ve not had any major updates. Sad. First Light could be so amazing - wireless tethering, custom looks, PRORAW, maybe even partnerships with flash manufacturers to control lights wirelessly like Prophoto C1. I emailed support a year ago and was told some good stuff was coming. Maybe they need a few more years….Version: 1.2.4

Won’t Let You Try Without SubscribingApp won’t let you demo anything unless you subscribe to automatically pay once the trial period is complete..Version: 1.4.6

Be warned, last IOS update 15 really screwed this app upNow locked into portrait mode, but image is rotated 90 to the right. View during picture taking is jerky and sluggish. I don’t think this is the fault of this developer, it is happening in another photo app from another developer too, almost the exact same problems. This on an iPad Mini 5, updated to IOS 15. Wouldn’t you think Apple would test their updates on their popular and pay for photo apps before they release them?.Version: 1.2.4

Another App Going SubscriptionIt’s too bad Filmic is going down the subscription route, people hate that payment model for apps, especially ones they only use occasionally. You can use basic features for free, but you may as well just use the built in camera app. All other features require a subscription. NO THANKS. I sure hope Filmic Pro, their video app, does not turn into a subscription, too, otherwise bye bye to that app s as well..Version: 1.0.3
