Filmic Firstlight - Photo App for Positive User Reviews

Good form from FilmicI preordered this app and loved the function but thought it was ridiculous to need a subscription to access the RAW photo options. I’m glad to see the Filmic team has reversed this and found a new profit model. I’m not against companies making a living, but that was a bit much With that said, Firstlight has moved to my goto photo app replacing Halide. Firstlight is really simple to use, I can get shots setup quickly, and the peaking makes sure I’m focused where I want to be..Version: 1.0.4

Mostly goodThe manual focus on objects out of range of automatic focusing is excellent. I can’t say it’s dramatically better than the standard camera app, but more control. However if listening to music and using the volume button to snap it changes the volume. Very tiresome and I’ve never encountered this before..Version: 1.3.0

Ignore the subscription comments, Filmic embraces cash modelHaving a decent collection of camera apps, I almost didn’t look at Firstlight by Filmic. I always read the reviews before I download (to pick up on incompatibilities, shortcomings) and was confused by the comments on a subscription model. I messaged Filmic, who replied promptly, advising they’d abandoned the subscription business model, replacing it with a full-version, no in-app purchases model. I’ve been using Filmic Pro for video for several years - all my “serious” stuff is shot with it and, after shifting into the Filmic paradigm, I find it easy and intuitive to use. I’ve just used Firstlight for a few minutes, but already like the Filmic approach and expect it will, shortly, become my default camera app, both for iPhone and iPad Pro. It’s rare that I get an app and really Iike it, right off the bat. If my early images are any indication, Firstlight is going to become and all-time favourite, just like Filmic Pro. I also like the company - attention to detail, quick response to questions, fastidious about maintaining their apps. I rarely give five stars, but compared to the other apps that I really like (Halide, VSCO, Manual, Pure), it’s at least a step or two above and at CDN$11, it’s a bargain..Version: 1.0.6

Great love to see this feature in updateThis is an exceptionally easy and versatile implementation of the iPhone’s camera. I would love to see user-customizable aspect ratings, or at least the addition of 7:6 and 65:24 Good app & no bugs that I’ve found!.Version: 1.3.0

Free features are great.Excellent photography app. I really like the free features, it works well for someone like myself. Filmic Pro and this Filmic photography app are fantastic..Version: 1.0.4

Only needs a couple improvementsThis is easily my favourite camera app, the film and grain simulations are some of the only accurate representations I have gotten on any digital camera with pre production. However I do wish you could create your own presets for quick access. For example a black and white + high grain preset for quick access, or a gold with low grain etc. I also wish you could film with this app but I know that's not the intended use.Version: 1.2.6

First photo appI’ve yet to meet a photographer who doesn’t capture their mobile photos on the native camera. This app is changing that. It’s the first photo app I’ve enjoyed. Love it..Version: 1.0.6

Good app with room for improvementsFor seven years I only used 645 PRO until ios 14 update and then realising the 645 PRO won’t work anymore as the developer stopped developing it. Luckily I found filmic firstlight to my liking. I have tried every other app in the market but none are satisfactory. My request to filmic developer is that please let us have the choice of saving uncompressed tiffs, because as of now the tiff files somehow feel like being compressed with some loss of details because the tiffs I used to get from 645 PRO were bigger and with great details. And then please make the app remember the user settings..Version: 1.1.2

Developer that listens! Thanks for the change away from a subscription model! After using FiLMiC for quite some time I was drawn to this photography app in an already crowded market. Knowing what the team could innovate in video, it was exciting to see what they could achieve in photography. Boy, have they delivered! I’m finding the AE/AF interface functional, intuitive and useful. The live loupe is also a particularly useful way to nail focus. All this before the film simulations which balance film like feel without being overcooked. A big congratulations for all your hard work and thank you for making social distancing more tolerable..Version: 1.0.6

Nice early versionSo far so good, I would prefer if the app would remember the film emulation setting so I don’t need to select it every time I use the app..Version: 1.0.6

Good app but HDR doesn’t stay offI have no problem with this app besides the fact that HDR keeps getting switched on every time I launch the app and I have to switch it off manually..Version: 1.2.3

Annoying albumsWhy oh why does this app need to create a new album every time I take a photo. I don’t want a “Firstlight” album. I never asked for a “Firstlight” album. Just wanted a simple camera app. Not yet another app to crowd up my albums to the point of uselessness. Otherwise great in capture function. Just stop ruining the Albums function please. Make it optional..Version: 1.4.0

Excellent Camera AppFiLMic Team have done it again. I can now delete several other apps. This is a fully a professional camera system. My backpack just got lighter. The premium subscription is inexpensive when you consider that others charge for new upgrades routinely..Version: 1.0.4

Great photo app from the filmic crewsLove that app and simplicity. Would like it if their was more alignment between filmic pro and first light, Tool/function placement etc. Would it be possible to add a photo output option to device folder? instead of direct to Photos library? Great work.Version: 1.0.6

RenewalGreat app but since my subscription ended this month I’ve not been able to renew. Please can you help..Version: 1.1.2

Great AppGladly paid the price after developers got rid of nonsense subscription. Really enjoying using this app and it really has all the features i need. Maybe bracketed capture for HDR would make it absolutely perfect. I’m happy that at least some developers actually listen to the users. Thumbs up, guys!.Version: 1.0.6

ExposureApp is amazing. I just wish I could change the exposure wasn’t Locked to the shutter speed or ISO..Version: 1.1.0

Outstanding moveThe only thing that stopped me from giving this app a great rating was that it was subscription based. Good on the devs for listening to the people!!.Version: 1.0.6

Love it! Feels like Street CamAt first I missed the lack of pinch to zoom, but now I’m using firstlight more like a pro street cam. I’d rather not digitally zoom if it can be avoided... better to use the whole sensor and use your feet to zoom. You can always just crop after the fact if you need to and this is all digital zoom is doing anyway. I like the ease of use and the organic looking film simulations. For color images my favs are Chrome Veloura and Koda. For b&w my go to is Bingham, but Salt is nice too. Then noir is also excellent for graphic looks. My own taste doesn’t favor the faded instant film simulations, but I’ve found they are an excellent starting point to edit a nice pastel quality after the fact. Really looking forward to how this app evolves. Highly Recommended!.Version: 1.0.6

The BEST and most underrated photo app EVERNo other app matches the quality of Firstlight’s film emulations and grain. A joy to use for those who appreciate good UX and analogue film emulations. Also thanks for fixing the most annoying issue. Format is now retained between launches..Version: 1.3.0

Save filter settingsPlease, add the functionality for saving preferred filter by default at start of app. Thank you!.Version: 1.1.2

No zoom??I just downloaded this app because I love fimic pro but I've come to discover that I cannot for the life of me find how to zoom in. I have no idea if this app just doesn't allow you to or if I'm incompetent. regardless, all the features are amazing!.Version: 1.2.4

Ace!:).Version: 1.0.4

Great app! Found bugThis is a great app for what I need it for. Im using an external anamorphic lens and it had the option to de-squeeze the image which is perfect! However... Ive noticed a thin diagonal line after taking the shots. Through the viewfinder I don't see this line but after it saves to my album I can see the same line in every photo. I tried other apps and even the stock camera app and this only happens with this app. I hope the developers see this and come up with a quick fix! All in all the app gives you more control over your camera and the ability to take the perfect shot every time! Perfect for cinematographers looking to take still images! (Developer please read bug)^^.Version: 1.1.2

Almost perfectThe app is packed full of nice features and you can really get so much more out of your camera than by using the native camera app. HOWEVER, there’s one thing that I sorely miss from having used filmic pro for a couple of years now, and that is the remote functionality! To be able to sit the iPhone on a tripod and then use your iPad to make all the adjustments and snap would be an instant five stars! Please please please make it happen! Apart from that, it’s really an awesome app.Version: 1.0.6

For the creative shooterI rarely leave reviews, but I have to express my appreciation for this thoughtfully crafted photo app. It feels like a tool designed specifically for those of us who appreciate the unique latitudes and limitations of shooting on film. It comes with plenty of options when flexibility in post is required, but there’s something special about committing to a shot without getting bogged down in editing that I can really appreciate. Firstlight will be a mainstay for me. Thanks, Filmic..Version: 1.0.6

The best. No doubt.I’ve had every iPhone since day one, and have tried hundreds of “Camera” apps. This (in my opinion) is the best by far. Not sure what went on with the subscription debacle, but I got it with the one of payment (as being offered now) and use nothing else. Excellent..Version: 1.0.6

Please update for Anamorphic 1.55X Moment Lens!!!I love this app for shooting B&W photography with the 1.33x Moment lens for awhile now but there’s no option in the settings to change for the 1.55x Anamorphic lens that are now available. Please give us a quick external lens swap button on the main camera page and or in the settings menu. 🙏🙏🙏.Version: 1.4.4

One of the best photos app on mobileLove Firstlight. Best film emulations and authentic grain on mobile..Version: 1.0.6

RAW files blurry viewed in AppI really like this app in almost everything except for the fact that when I take photos in RAW (DNG) they look blurry when I review them in the app, however, when I review the same photo in Photos, they look focused and sharp. Maybe it’s just a small bug but annoying to not be able to see the real thing right away while shooting. Everything else is fine..Version: 1.0.6

Multi camWhen can we expect to film using multiple camera on the iPhone 11 Pro Max?.Version: 1.0.6

Zoom in optionI will give 5 stars but the app could be better as the filmic pro video app. One thing that I think is important is the ability to do zoom in and out on the camera. Where is that option?.Version: 1.2.4

Raw formats are greatIt’s easy to use and easy to control settings. I like that I can shoot raw ( dng) and get a good dynamic range in Lightroom. Used it today at Australia Zoo on an IpXS Max with a 58 mm mobile lens. The results were stunning. This is a great app.Version: 1.0.6

Animorphic de squeeze - enough said !!!Animorphic de squeeze - enough said !!!.Version: 1.0.3

FrustratingThis is a great app. It is well thought out and very easy to use. If it needs to be a subscription based app then let it happen as I would prefer to subscribe and use an app that is regularly updated (ProRAW, etc) than pay once for an app that stagnates in the past..Version: 1.1.2

Needs one thingI love the app but needs one thing, Preserve setting. I have to go into the app every time and reset my preferred filter before shooting...Version: 1.0.6

Image quailty poorI was looking for a camera app with better focusing than the native iphone camera. Bummer - even images (jpeg & tiff) exposed using a tripod in daylight contain a lot of noise. Iphone camera does a far better job. Not happy - esp given the $12.99 price tag..Version: 1.0.6

Focus stacking requestLove the app so far! I mostly take macro shots and would love to have a focus stacking feature in addition to all the amazing features so far. Am I asking for too much?.Version: 1.0.4

Best camera appI have used Filmic for video a fair bit and really like it but have always wanted a camera app that saves either tiff or raw (in this case dng). The quality is outstanding and is easy to send it to a photo editing app..Version: 1.1.2

Now a one time purchase!Subscriptions for one time coded features are very exploitive so thank you for... seeing the light 😁 Was an instant purchase for me and I'm very happy with the polish and great work you did with the app. It does still crash on occasion (specifically when accessing the shortcut button) but I trust you to continue to support it. Thanks!.Version: 1.0.6

No more subscriptions!! Purchased!!Thank you soooo much for listening!!! Love everything you’ve been doing and I’m happy to support. Great app! As always!.Version: 1.0.6

Incredible! But needs WB controlI really like this app a lot, really no complaints except that it has no white balance control. If we can get white balance control that would terrific!.Version: 1.3.0

Making moves...The app is great, pretty intuitive. I’ve only been using it for a little while and have yet to use it in a professional setting. It’s a little slow on the trigger tho and so you’re not sure you’ve got the shot until it shows in the camera roll. Definitely use some type of stabilizer until you get use to the way it functions, it’s good that they have a big shutter button. However I do like the familiar feel from using FilMic Pro and it has the desqueeze feature for anamorphic lenses. I love that I can shoot RAW DNG & TIFF files, the histogram is like right there and it doesn’t get into the way. I have an iPhone 11 Pro max so I can change between all 4 lenses pretty easily. Although I’m missing one huge feature, I hope it’s going to be a quick and easy update. Give me the ability to use the DOF MK2 adapter from BeastGrip Pro for stills PLEASE!!! I know you can do this. Cheers!.Version: 1.0.3

Nice app, great features.A smooth and sleekly designed app with some very innovative features to help you take great photos. While the filters are great, I would like to see a few more “regular” everyday film styles included like those in the Chrome filter set in the app. While the instant, infared and print filter sets are done very well, they are rather too abstract to use for everyday photos and social media posts. The chrome filter set however is done very well with some great tones that look very unique compared to the standard VSCO style look. Overall a great app and looking forward to future updates..Version: 1.0.6

First light.Great app but it needs zoom function!!!.Version: 1.3.0

Add a Filter-Save function!!Great app, workflow, etc. Two downsides/feature requests though: 1) ability to set a default filter that is enabled when the app launches would be a huge time saver. 2) many filters feel a bit extreme, kinda longing for the less obtrusive but film-genuine filters from RNI here. But I love the grain effects, UI, and Leopold filter on this and it’s become my go-to shooting app..Version: 1.3.0
