Crying Suns for Positive User Reviews

CoolNice space strategy game with lovely pixel art graphics! Just started and so far very nice. Lots of story elements with combat and planetary exploration! Looking forward to seeing more of it. Ok I’m a few turns in now and starting to get the hang of it!😎👍 After several attempts I still can’t get past the first chapter even though I’m on easy! I mean come on!🙄😭.Version: 1.4.1

Please fix crashesI’ve nearly won a combat 4 times now using Juggernaut, but at the last moment the game crashed and I have to start the 2 combat sequence over. This is extremely frustrating, please fix the crashes..Version: 3.0.1

Great titles butBeen looking at this for a while and not been disappointed as loads of fun. However the game crashes every time at the end of the Final Cut scene on chapter 4 so impossible to get the hammer class ship. Please fix!.Version: 3.0.1

Great gameReally enjoying the game so far! A couple of small requests would be to make the game playable in the upside down landscape orientation, right now its locked to only one landscape rotation, easy fix. Secondly, in combat it can be really hard to see the ships on the grid and know their type, everything is so tiny, perhaps you can allow us to zoom in and out on the battlefield with a pinch to zoom gesture, it would make things alot clearer and should feel pretty natural controls wise. But overall a fantastic game, thanks for bringing it to mobile!.Version: 1.4.0

Great game!Really good game and value for money. Graphics are atmospheric. Storyline is imaginative and there is a good combination of strategy and luck involved. Definitely recommend giving it a go, these developers deserve some recognition as so much more to this than most of the dross on the App Store!.Version: 1.4.3

The best game on the App Store.Excellent performance, fun gameplay, very well written dialogue and storytelling, beautiful visuals/pixel art, and it doesn’t kill your battery!! It’s also pretty cheap compared to the console/pc versions..Version: 2.2.4

Great simulatorA lot of fun to play. I love the choices and battles. Progression style very similar to FTL with random choices. Loose story but enough to hold it together to give some cohesion. Playing on an iPad Mini 5. Text and graphics are a bit small. Need slightly larger text or ideally a pinch and zoom to see more clearly. Would love to try on a bigger IPad, but this is what I have right now..Version: 1.4.1

Gameplay IssuesCore game is fun and interesting, but I keep crashing when I beat the Chapter1 boss. I’ve paid for the game, I shouldn’t have to ask for it to work as advertised..Version: 3.0.0

A painful experienceSome of the warships in the game will have the mobile phone flash back when fighting, I hope the official can fix the relevant bug. This is a great game, and hopefully much more content appears..Version: 3.0.1

Atmospheric fleet tacticsFor some reason this game hit a spot for me. It stacks up well against other rouge lite games like FTL and others that inspired it. Making decisions as cloned admiral traveling through a collapsing empire is pretty cool. The bridge interface feels good. The tactical battles were fun once I realized it was meant to be played like a turn-based tactics game. The tactical pause creates a nice flow to the skirmishes. I’m happy that the the team that made this is releasing some new content soon. More events would also be great..Version: 1.4.2

Wishing for Endless run modeWishing for an endless run mode which after a folder jump, all properties (officer, squadrons and weapons) that did not start with the run will be converted to scraps for buying customizes at the beginning of the next folder..Version: 2.2.4

Amazing, I have been playing this game for years! That being said: 1. The Juggernauts crash the game now if the hit the enemy. 2. I have no idea how to unlock the new battle ships, I have tried two new runs. Awesome game, lots of replay. Love the sound track..Version: 3.0.1

AmazingYou don’t find a game like this very often. The attention to detail in this title shows a true love for all things geek. The dev team are both Fans and creators. Fans first I think. Bravo on creating one of the best games I’ve played all year..Version: 2.2.4

Very enjoyableGreat game for the phone. Easy to pick up and play. In-depth gameplay, challenging, and engaging story. Could use a zoom feature..Version: 2.2.0

The perfect blendFTL with a story, that runs neatly and quickly on a phone, with huge amounts of character and replayability? Amazing.Version: 1.4.3

Excellent but too hardThis game is so well made in so many ways ... BUT if you’re like me and get more enjoyment from the exploration, discovery and sense of progress than from a tough strategic challenge then it might not be for you. On “easy” mode, I find myself limping out of every victory by the skin of my teeth with most of my units bust up and running out of fuel all the time. Honestly, I just find it stressful. Developers: I think difficulty settings should be there to cater for different playing styles. Some people love striving hard to beat a tough challenge. Good for them, they can turn it up to “hard”. But people like me get turned off by always playing on the edge of survival..Version: 2.2.0

Grimdark FTL and Star TrekI’m really enjoying the game so far, you enjoy games like FTL you’ll likely enjoy Crying Suns. It follows the same familiar formula with some interesting twists. My only complaint is that the icons and text are pretty small and hard to read. There’s a lot of wasted space on the screen alongside some tiny text..Version: 1.4.0

FTL meets an elaborate sci-fi novel. This game is great. Highlights are the excellent soundtrack, the hex-based combat system, and a story that’s engaging and especially elaborate for a strategy game. The advanced tactics update makes it even better. I own the game on steam, and I own the game on iOS (playing the game on iPad Pro 12.9’’). I highly recommend the iOS version, as the controls are very intuitive. Looking forward to experiencing everything that there is to do, and also, a sequel. No reason not to grab this game..Version: 2.1.2

Great game!Great game - been looking at it for ages and finally taken the plunge. Dipped in, and completed the first Chapter on my first go on Standard and have several chapters left to go. Will have to come back to it another time though - the story lasts some time / is good value for money and not all over before you feel it's barely started like some games. I have completed FTL previously on standard so am used to the strategy / managing and making decisions on resources. I haven't had to look up any help or explanations like some reviewers mention or bemoan it it too hard etc. Is just right for me. Clearly explains itself in all areas and is a challenge - giving a sense of accomplishment when overcoming challenges and proceeding onto the next stage of the story. I look forward to where it will lead / hope it will continue to please.Version: 2.2.4

MasterpieceEasily one of the best games on iOS. Challenging gameplay, compelling story, fitting musical score, and unique aesthetic combine to provide a great experience. After buying the game, I (apparently) played it for about five hours per day, completing the campaign in about a week..Version: 2.2.4

Great Premium PortI will always support developers who port great games with no IAP. This game is perfect for a quick play or longer session. The lore is fantastic and the art is amazing. My only complaint is it’s a little hard to read some of the text on iPhone, but that’s probably my eyes and not a fault of the dev..Version: 1.4.5

Solid Marriage Between FTL And RTSGreat art, fun easter eggs, and engaging plot-lines. This game scratches the itch that FTL created and adds some more fun with the RTS elements. The story is convoluted (in a good way), so there's plenty of interesting content, even after a few runs. There are a few spelling mistakes scattered throughout and the game consistently crashes at very inopportune moments, resulting in me needing to replay the same mission dozens of times before advancing. Additionally, I still cannot unlock the chapter 4 ship, despite finishing the entire story, as the end-of-chapter cutscene is always interrupted by a crash lol.Version: 3.0.1

Decent gameBought the game, finished it over a 4 day weekend. Combat was engaging. Story was solid. My main issue is that on the iPad Pro there were several instances of the game crashing. It took a bit of trouble shooting each time to figure out what happened. For instance whenever the juggernaut attacked a khaos class battle ship it crashed. These crashes lead to my game being unable to unlock the act4 ship. However it didn’t stop me from finishing the game…the game seemed quite content with me finishing act 5 and unlocking that ship. I never could figure out why the act 4 cut scene would crash….Version: 3.0.1

A fun genre mashupA little bit of Homeworld, a little bit of XCOM, a little bit of FTL, and a pinch of Dune for flavor (come on, you play a character named “Idaho”, a bit heavy on the homage but I’ll take it). Maybe I’m a sucker for all these things, but it’s held my interest for multiple playthroughs on PC and it fits the mobile platform perfectly..Version: 1.4.0

Great game, one big (tiny actually!) problemThis game is highly creative and very fun! The graphics r great and so is the storyline. There is one problem with this game at its current state... the text (and it is a text-filled game) is sooo tiny it hurts my eyes to read. Plz developers, as I see u r patching the game, plz increase the text size or give an option to do so in your settings screen! That being said, great game yall!.Version: 1.4.3

A Solid gameCommand battleship and manage resources to progress..Version: 2.2.0

😢Crying Suns☀️Let’s start of by saying that Crying Suns has been compared to FTL and yes, the whole game mechanic lends itself thus. It’s not as accessible as FTL however. Nor do I believe it to have the longevity of FTL. But hey listen, it’s a good game. I’m enjoying it. Crying Suns works absolutely fine on my old 2017 iPad Pro by the way. What I don’t like and it’s only minor I know, is that the bleeding game doesn’t auto rotate. I like having my iPad a certain way when I game and this isn’t it. So, one ⭐️ off for that. Nit picky I understand but sort it and you can have your ⭐️ back 😊.Version: 1.4.1

Great gameThe storyline and gameplay in this game is great. Well worth the 9 dollars it costs. I only have 2 main issues with this game. First, it has some minor tech issues which include my phone getting pretty hot and also occasional random frame drops, the second is the fact that I quickly figured out who was behind the shutdown, but couldn’t progress to them and instead had to go thru all the different sectors. However don’t let that stop you from getting this game as the story is incredible and makes the game get y hard to put down. Overall 9/10.Version: 1.4.3

Truly addictingIt is true that normal difficulty setting often leaves you barely scraping past a battle - but this is exactly what gets you so deeply involved in your decision making in the game!!! If you’ve gone through a game-over or two, you then start realising how important your decisions are between weapons, squadrons and crew early on.You’re constantly trying to scrape together enough money and fuel and having to make decisions between buying a weapon, buying a much needed new squadron, fixing broken squadrons, or buying commandos and crew so you can survive missions. I love the many references to Dune too!.Version: 2.2.4

Intriguing storyline with great replay ability and strategyAmazing game, really happy with the purchase, especially on my new iPad Pro, it’s a great game. Looking forward to the updates and hopefully the big steam update for PC comes to iOS soon. Developers seem active..Version: 1.4.3

The closest you’ll get to FTL on mobileI’ve been looking for an FTL type game on mobile for a long time, and this game freaking hits the spot. But it’s also not a rip off. Far from it. The game has enough unique mechanics and gameplay that it clearly stands alone as a super fun and addictive game. Devs did a great job..Version: 3.0.1

Hands down one of the best mobile gamesAmazing music, fun strategy battles, entertaining story. I have played through the game twice, and it is well worth the price. One issue: the game always seems to crash right before the final boss fight. Can be reloaded but it’s be nice if it was fixed..Version: 3.0.1

Lots of crashesThe most glaring and consistent one is when the player uses the juggernaut. Whenever it completes the drill attack the game crashes every single time. Other then that this is a fantastic game..Version: 3.0.1

WowWow. This is the game that redefines the genre. Exemplary..Version: 2.2.4

Great space tactical gameThe story was just engaging enough to keep you wanting more but the game-lay was a breath of fresh air. There are very few space tactical games and this is one of the best. The difficulty ramped up at a good pace and each run was slightly different so as to not be boring. The only time I got frustrated was at the end and more because I wanted to win than anything wrong with the game. Well worth the time and NO MICROTRANSACTIONS!.Version: 1.4.5

Great Game but Large IssueThis game has really good writing and a very solid basic concept Unfortunately however, I am unable to continue playing because I have no other stars to jump to. Made it to first planet and finished first expedition. Went to star map and literally the only jumps are “Entrance” (which I checked just in case) and the star I was currently at, making it impossible to progress the game. Quite a serious issue considering the price tag and the fact that I could only enjoy about 15 - 30 minutes of play I’ll restart the run to see if it occurs again but this is proof the bug exists. Dev team seems very responsive so will be changing rating when issue is fixed *Edit: Restarting the run seems to have fixed it. Now have access to 10+ jumps.Version: 1.4.2

Fun and not too complexFun game! Liking the narrative, music, overall aesthetic/mood. Tactical combat is refreshingly not too complex, but badly needs a zoom feature. Hard to tell unit type and to select units on smaller screens like iPhone..Version: 1.4.5

Crashing issue - fixed with iOS updateUPDATED. - see below. App Store says my device is compatible but using iOS 13 and iPhone 7 game crashes frequently making it unplayable. Will attempt to upgrade iOS but so far disappointed as love the concept and the pay-up-front format. Will update review if crash issue solved in update. So update to 14.4 worked in fixing the crashing issues. Very interesting game, the geek in me loves the nods to some of my favourite sci-fi books and games and can imaging this is going to take a long time to master. I hope there is a ‘free to explore’ option later on. Yet to master the combat on a small device but see that as a challenge rather than an issue..Version: 2.2.0

Serious funThe similarity to FTL is warranted, the base mechanics are the same, but what I am really enjoying alongside this is the fleshed out narrative, dialogue, interface, hex battle process with squadrons. It’s very nicely put together and syncs beautifully across devices. Basically this and Slay the Spire are all we really need on iOS ;).Version: 1.4.1

Post update fix-Once the opening bug was fixed I’m hooked. Really great rogue game. If you enjoyed FTL and DOTE you will like this. All around a really well done piece. A couple of notes: 🪐 there is a lot of info regarding the ships stations and options at the outset. A small info icon to have a re-explanation during battles would be nice for players. I’ve tried reading the info about the ships hill for instance but I’m still not 100% sure how the damage system works. 🪐much of the npc dialogue feels like it’s being acted out by the same personality. Not much diversity of language (of course it’s a game not a novel) 🪐having crashes when I select to start a planetary away party and other various moments in game 🪐would be nice to have a lore section. The story is very interesting and makes me want to explore more in it. I hope another game in this universe gets developed..Version: 1.4.2

Great game, but I wish…Bought the game a couple days ago and I love it. The combat flows and scales nicely depending on what difficulty you pick. The story and lore is a slow drip with an interesting twist. I only really have two complaints. Every now and again the game boots me out when I’m about to win a fight and will continue to do so if I approach it the same way again and again. It’s not a big deal on a lower difficulty as all I have to do is change my tactics, but on a higher challenge it’s a nuisance and makes quick runs demoralizing as this bug is more common than I’d like to admit. My second is the length of the game. This game is SHORT. A handful of hours and you’re done. It’s a bit disappointing giving how much attention went into the world building. I feel an expansion would give this game the time it needs to feel even better. If you like post apocalyptic Sci-fi this game is an easy grab..Version: 3.0.3

Thoughtfully Designed Sci-fiCrying Suns is a resource tipping-point adventure game with a tactical combat sub-theme. A lot of thought and effort went into the story, game mechanics, and art. It’s been really fun playing on an iPad. I have two criticisms that I hope will turn into improvements. First, the story is very angsty and difficult to believe. There are a few truly mature motives, and most enemies you meet want you to kill them. No one in the entire game, except perhaps its protagonist, wants to live a free and happy life, even through trouble. It must have been written by a teenager or a nerd. Second, tactical combat takes a backseat to resource extraction and purchasing. It would be more to fun play against a more complex enemy AI as long as there were a flattened reward curve for resource gathering and purchasing efficiency. The most fun part of the game was role-playing as Captain Picard, organizing away missions, conducting fleet battles, interacting with different factions, and exploring. In my opinion Crying Suns is still one of the best games available for the iPad as of 2022. Recommended..Version: 2.2.4

Wow!• Story Engaging (No long wall text) that assault eyes like some games. Very well written, easy to follow.. deep story w/ linear conversation tree mechanic - meant to give you deeper understanding of story, by asking questions. Which you will ! • Onion layers here with the depth of... - Ship Abilities - Officer Abilities - Cool Down Abilities - Rock, Paper & Scissor Mechanics (a classic game mechanic) • Beautiful Art Work (I’m screen capping all over the place) so I can save as wall paper on my iPad Pro 12.9 • Mixture of Turn Based Tactics & Real Time Strategy. Civ 6 -meets- Rome Total War? In regards to mixing these two cadences. • Compelling, mysterious atmosphere. It will pull you. • I’m that one strange person, that could never get into FTL, and I tried. Crying Suns does not have FTL vibes to me. It’s own thing in my eyes. Crying Suns gives me XCOM vibes for whatever reason. I’m still learning this game, about 4 star visits in.. but I had to give this game a 5 star. I’ve been a NON free to play gamer for over 30 years. I know my way around the block - This is a premium gem. My only wish... in the future it receives PVP. I would love to test these tactics & strategies versus human minds!.Version: 1.4.3

A dark take on FTL, with RTS elementsReally love how they make you feel like a starship commander and the storyline so far, and I’ve only finished chapter 1! A few things keep it from being 5 stars. 1. The graphics feel a bit small and are sometimes hard to parse, I can’t imagine this playable on a smaller screen than 11”. Would love some kind of zoom when selecting tiles, even just a little would help a lot. I don’t need to see both ships when I’m telling my drones where to fly for example. 2. Some of the pixel art doesn’t seem to scale down right, like the terrain on surface missions looks like a mess of pixels, I tried the PC demo and they were clear there. Not sure what resolution this is running, but give us a higher resolution level for iPad pros! 2. The controls are mostly well implemented, but I can’t figure out how to cancel ship weapons without restarting their timers, and I’ve accidentally bought things in shops because I swiped too slow since there isn’t a confirm box there. Little things like that are frustrating. Overall though I recommend this game to anyone who enjoys spaceship combat, strategy, or who loved FTL. Can’t wait to play more!.Version: 1.4.1

I love this game.Almost a perfect port. I’m a big fan on the pc but think it also translates very well to the phone. I just with that some of the UI commands didn’t have to be so repetitive. Like when you are deploying a ship, you cold slid out the ship selection screen on the left and place each ship without having to reopen the menu every time after it closes automatically. Still think it’s great, I still Will always love humble..Version: 2.2.4

Please add a endless modeThis is a really good game it’s just can you add a endless mode..Version: 2.2.4

Good gameGood game good story.Version: 2.2.0

Keeps crashingThis app simply won’t load. UPDATE: I’ve changed my rating from 1 to 5 stars as the game is now running well. And it’s awesome, just the kind of expansive sci-fi game I’ve been looking for. Enthralling story. Still learning the controls and gameplay but they’re fairly intuitive. Excellent!.Version: 1.4.2

Great gameLoved the game, loved the story. I played through on normal, and found it to be fairly mild. Only had a few deaths and a few really close battles. Anyway it was perfect for me, if I wanted to sweat the whole way, I guess I could have tried the hard mode..Version: 2.1.2

Got it free on PCBought it on iOS so I can restart it anywhere:) Awesome writing, only at chapter 5 on PC and coming back to 1 on iOS makes a lot of dialog having a lot more sense the second time! Lobe it!.Version: 2.2.0

BrilliantA daring and faithful blend of 4X strategy and real time space combat, with great decision-making, replayability and a strong narrative. You can throw many comparisons at this game, as many people have; FTL, Homeworld, the fantastic 1992 Dune game. But with its creative vision, beautiful synth soundtrack and fantastic pixel art visuals, I think it stands on its own. This has just become my go-to iPad game..Version: 1.4.5

Everything I was hoping for in an iOS gameSpeaking as a dad, who can only game on iOS devices - this game hits on every aspect of gaming I’ve been looking for and haven’t found in a long time. The story is bang on - with tons of references to multiple space operas, the game play is fun, with a very intuitive interface, and ability to learn as you go (provided you’re willing to read), and stunning design. I don’t typically leave reviews - but this game deserves it..Version: 1.4.5

Ok.Just. Awesome..Version: 2.2.4

Literally FTL but betterGreat story, dynamic gameplay, everything is perfect!.Version: 1.4.5

Great game, just one suggestionI downloaded this game because of the App Store recommendation, and I was not let down. The visuals and story are mysterious and interesting and the music is great. I love how some elements are clearly influenced by other science fiction games/films/books such as the intro cutscene, which appears to be heavily inspired by The Matrix. The combat takes some getting used to, partially because I have not discovered a way to review old tutorials, but once you gain a basic understanding it becomes much more fluid and engaging. One suggestion: I would greatly appreciate if you make it so that you can select a ship’s target/route before it actually spawns on the battlefield? I find it annoying to have to pause the action to place the squadron, unpause to let it spawn, and then pause again to select enemy squadrons or systems..Version: 2.2.4

Really responsive Dev TeamI had an issue loading this game, and sent an email to the dev team. At 1:15am est. on a Friday Night/Saturday Morning. Got an emailed response within minutes, and they helped me out, and fixed another game that wasn’t working. Seems like a great group of Devs, and so far I’m loving this game. I’m happy they’re number 2 in the App Store for RPGs. Cheers!.Version: 1.4.0

Great game.Excellent story. Still quite a bit of dialogue repetition but doesn’t ruin the enjoyment. A sequel would be cool. 😎.Version: 2.2.4

No in app purchases! The draw for me was no in-app purchases or spam to buy more “currencies”. After downloading, action was nearly instant. Not typical as far as games in this genre go, it’s turn based with the ability to PAUSE during space battles. A neat feature is the “anomaly” aspect with random events that have a positive or negative effect, sometimes that choice we think is good… was a baaaaad idea. It’s an awesome twist to gameplay!. Ships are upgradeable in many ways, with better ships unlocked through simple gameplay. The main currency isn’t hard to come by… and I’ve said too much already. It’s worth the money!!!.Version: 2.2.4

Amazing game with amazing developersOne of my favorite games on the Appstore. When I encountered a bug that locked one of the battleships I contacted the devs and they fixed my save file within 2 days. Worth every dollar. Seriously cannot recommend enough to anyone who enjoys games like FTL and other roguelites..Version: 3.0.1

Great and honestLike a good story and some real time strategy? If so then this game is for you. They did a fine job integrating it to mobile just like their description said they did. The combat (exclusively spaceship battles) is interesting and fleshed out. You’re also consistently presented with something new whether it’s an upgrade or a story beat. I really appreciate the care put into this game. Here are some other features I liked: Beautiful visual art and animation Fun and interesting dialogue with a surprising amount of personalized characters A complex universe and society that makes progress and exploration really fun Space combat that makes you think on your feet The only problem I had was that during space combat there was always a slight chance that I’d select a wrong ship or target because of their very small size and tendency to be so close to each other during combat. But it wasn’t a huge issue. Hope you enjoy it!.Version: 2.2.0

FTL but totally different?I had stumbled across this after getting crying suns for free on pc, hearing it was similar to FTL, one of my favorite games. It has many influences of FTL, but it’s an entirely different game with a lot more depth and complexity. That is both good and bad. FTL was so simple to learn but hard to master, and this one has a lot more going on with it so there’s more to learn initially before you start to really understand what’s going on. That being said, if you liked FTL and you like sci-fi you really need to check this game out. Worth it!.Version: 2.2.0

Similar to FTL but way better storyThis is a good game with one of the best storylines I’ve had the pleasure to have finished. The gameplay style is very much like FTL (and if you don’t know what “FTL” is then educate yourself) but a bit more simple. FTL is actually better in terms of the ship-to-ship combat experience, and growth of “characters” and customization of you ship. But Suns shines and hooks you into the storyline so well you’ll find yourself hours into play and it’ll seem like little time has past at all. Well worth the cost. A good take on what our future may be after we create AI..Version: 1.4.5

More…Love this game. Saw it in SplatterCat a while back and finally decided to give it a god. Boy is it good.. got lots of replay ability..Version: 2.2.4

Great experience with some crashesUnique combination of familiar story and mechanics. FTL vibes for sure. Love what I’ve played so far, 4 hours in. Every fifth combat or so the game hard crashes (though luckily the cloud save is intact up to the start of that fight). Playing in May 2023 on iPhone 12..Version: 3.0.0

BeautifulMuch like ‘kingdom new lands’ the sound and graphics are atmospheric and beautiful. The learning curve is not too hard and fairly intuitive but I recommend you start on easy. It’s not as tactical or hands on as FTL, but it’s very addictive and great fun. Lots of replay-ability too. Well worth the money..Version: 1.4.3

Great game!Loved all of it - hope to see more!.Version: 1.4.3

Great gameDon’t know why people are crying saying it’s hard. It’s literally effortless. I don’t know how you could even be struggling.Version: 2.2.4

Fantastic!!!I bought this to have something new to play while I was at home on vacation, and man, oh man.....I’ve had this game not even two days, and I’ve dropped HOURS into it. I’m not always a big fan of this genre of game (rouge-lites), but the reviews online kept telling me that I needed to give it a chance. I’m glad I listened. This game is well worth the price. Pick it up, spend hours with it, enjoy it, die, and get excited to play “just one more game”. Rinse and repeat. You won’t regret it..Version: 1.4.5

Fantastic gameTook a bit longer to grow on me than I expected but when it did ... wow! Totally worth the time and effort.Version: 1.4.3
