MusicSmart - Liner Notes for Negative User Reviews

Of little useApp sort of works but has very limed data and therefore of little use. I would like to see the contents of the CD insert but instead only get aonly a few items. Plus it is very awkward to use. Better to scan lthe liner notes and add them to the album artwork..Version: 2.0.0

Promising start but serious music aficionados will be disappointedThis is a concept that’s been a long time coming. But serious aficionados and collectors will find it disappointing. You’ll find plenty of info on newer releases and for pop recordings, but what shows up on even very well known classic albums is often erroneous or bare bones. First, in spite of what some of the online reviews say, I didn’t find any original liner notes for any of the albums I checked on. And many, many famous albums that have sold millions of copies show up with generic or worse album art (Apple Music itself is much more likely to have correct album art). BB King’s Live at the Regal shows up with a generic “Electric Blues 101” album artwork; no musician lineups or songwriting credits on Pet Sounds or any Beatle albums. How is this even possible? Somehow, though, MusicSmart reveals accurate age, birth city and middle names for even the most obscure artists - not 100%, but for a high proportion of albums in your Apple Music collection. Search is an annoyingly missing feature. And, again, songwriting credits, which must be legally registered with every song still under copyright, are somehow missing. All that said, I give the app 2 stars because there is the potential, if the developers can ever link it up with a decent database, to provide all this info and more within the structure of the app. And the depth of info provided for a lot of newer popular albums is kind of amazing (sample sources for newer big selling hip hop albums is a really cool feature). Looking forward to the developers getting this one right in future updates, or if it finally inspires Apple to finally embed full liner note, album art and artist info within Music, that would be worth the $1.99 too..Version: 1.0.0

Needs more depth in Christian musicAs a listener of contemporary Christian music, there are a LOT of songs and albums this app doesn’t know. Many entries have nothing more than what Apple Music has. We listeners are a huge genre of lots of awesome music from Crowder to Needtobreathe to Chris Tomlin and TobyMac and I hope they include more on all of these genre artists. Content developers, Klove radio or The Message on Sirius XM is a place to start with what they’re streaming!.Version: 1.2.2

What about jazz credits? If you are a jazz fan and want to know what musicians are playing on each track there isn’t much here. Get yourself the free Allmusic app and don’t bother with this one.Version: 1.2.8

LackingHit or miss. Hardly any correct information in jazz or classical tracks. 9 out of 10 times there is either incorrect or no information at all. Obviously the MacStories and other press reviewers only listen to pop and hip hop and recent albums at that. Very disappointed. Hopes this gets fixed..Version: 1.0.4

Very disappointing appI had high hopes for this app as a way to easily get detailed information on albums in my Music app. No information is available for albums not in Apple Music. Moreover, even for those albums that are, there was very limited information provided. No info on artists performing on each track, what instruments were being played, recoding studio, and other details. Wish I could get my money back. Better to just subscribe to AllMusic.com, which does not even require a subscription..Version: 1.3.6

Waste of moneyAt least for classical NO LINER NOTES. nothing beyond that which apple gives.Version: 2.0.3

No Liner Notes?Unless I’m having a difficult time navigating the updated app, it seems like all the actual “liner notes” are no longer available. There’s a wealth of information within the app, and it seems pretty well laid out since I was a more regular user, but the liner notes from old vinyl records that I used to be able to access through the app don’t seem to be there anymore. I imagine it could be a licensing thing, but it’s a shame. And if there are no actual liner notes, it makes the app name a bit misleading..Version: 2.0.1

DissappointedThis was represented as liner notes. Liner notes to me consist of names of all the artists who performed on the record. Many times lyrics are included. I would expect a picture of the front and back cover of the album. Most of the info from this app is already available in the Apple music app, so I don’t understand the point..Version: 1.2.8

A helpful utility, with two caveatsI’ve only occasionally dipped into this app for detailed information regarding my music, so I haven’t fully explored all the nooks and crannies. At this point, I can recommend the app, but I have to mention two frustrations. #1 may be outside the developer’s control, but it’s still annoying: Not all albums featuring MusicSmart data include the same categories of data or even much data at all; some feature extensive lists of performers/producers/engineers, etc., while others simply present songwriter credits. I’m sure this is based on what’s available, but I’d like to see both greater detail and greater consistency. #2 is more frustrating for me: Before you can read liner notes or view MusicSmart data for an album, that album must be in your library. I realize it doesn’t require much effort to add a title via Apple Music, but it’s a hurdle that feels unnecessary. If I’m shopping for physical music, I’d be able to read the liner notes on the back of an LP or, perhaps, maybe even on a CD; why can’t I access information regardless of whether a title is in my personal library or not? That information could help me decide whether to stream, add in Apple Music, or purchase new music..Version: 1.3.3

Notes about nothingIf iTunes never thought to offer artists the ability to publish liner notes—or if artists tend not to publish notes to begin with—then an app like this hasn’t much to work with. So far, I have yet to see this app compile notes of much value—usually just the artist and label name, issue date and a link to Wikipedia. I collect jazz fusion music, it would be great to know each of the musicians who play on a song or album, or where the music was recorded, who produced it, or any background stories. Ultimately I blame Apple for the lack of foresight. If not Apple, then the music industry should consider building a central resource to house notes. At least an app like this could have something to work with..Version: 1.1.9

Completely uselessThis app connects you with nothing resembling actual liner notes. No information concerning musicians, performance dates, etc (although you do appear to get composer’s name). I looked up Van Morrison’s “Roll with the Punches.” I learned that the musician on that album is Van Morrison. Nothing about anyone else on the album. If you were hoping that at last an app had solved the missing liner notes problem, this isn’t it..Version: 1.2.1

Terrible Update Bricks an Awesome AppMusicSmart had been one of my favorite apps and really enhanced my listening pleasure of Apple Music. Then there was an update several weeks ago, and now all I get is the writer and the producer of each song. No longer is there a detailed breakdown of who played what instrument on a song and that’s the main reason I bought this app. Now if I want to know that info, I have to go back to Wikipedia, just like I did before buying this app. Total fail!.Version: 2.0.3

LimitedNot worth getting if your music is mainly jazz, classical or World music..Version: 1.2.8

Enjoyed it when it workedWas a great app but it seems like it’s not going to work again..Version: 1.2.6

Not for classic musicThe app whisks you off to the Metacritic website which has never encountered Beethoven, the little known composer. This is certainly helpful for Prince, etc. but you can find additional recording information anywhere. A great idea but the apo will need a wider scope for a variety of tastes..Version: 1.1.3

Definitely a 1.0 versionBought this after reading some great reviews on it. The app has huge potential but needs to be reworked. The app itself lists all albums in your Music library. Theres no way to re order them by artist or songs. No search bar. The extension portion of the app (tap the three dots when you go into an album) for the Music App is great but it’s limited to what it can do. Not sure why. Is this an Apple limitation or just the way the share extension works? When it does work, it’s fantastic. A whole wealth of information. Seriously. Needs to be more complete. Can’t understand why some albums work and others don’t..Version: 1.0.0

TerribleBought this for liner notes. Doesn’t show recent releases. None..Version: 1.3.5

Good!Wish this was more integrated into Apple Music, though I certainly can't blame this app for that. Main gripe right now, is that when I click View Details on Musicsmart within apple music, it takes me to the albun page, not the song page. It should be the song, not the albun, as I'm.clicking "share song". Just an unnecessary step to click tracks, find the song you are listening to, and then view notes. Wished it took you to the exact song.Version: 1.2.2

Great PotentialI really appreciate the developer for creating this app, which addresses a glaring hole left by Apple Music. How Apple could create their extensive product catalog and simply omit all information about a given album and artist is beyond belief. For me, we should be able to find out songwriter, album/track musicians and liner notes. I am an older music lover know and that that information was listed on album covers of the time, so I guess the problem is that the information was never transcribed to a database. Again I appreciate the effort and will continue using the app, hoping some happy day to see updates..Version: 1.1.3

Waste of moneyWish I had not paid for this. It only recognises 60% of my music. Waste of money.Version: 1.0.1

DisappointedDoesn’t do what it says..Version: 1.2.2

DisappointedI bought the app specifically because advertising claimed it would allow me to see album liner notes for content in my Apple Music library. I see artwork, track listing and links to reviews, but no liner notes..Version: 1.3.6

InconsistentGreat in concept but too often it glitches and delivers only cursory song data. When looking at Genius, I nevertheless see all of the song liner note information. Keep working on it, A for concept and effort….Version: 2.0.0

Something’s Wrong.Using app with Apple Music , continuously crashes when switching tabs (Album, Tracks, Artist - within MusicSmart). Have deleted app and reinstalled many times. Using iPad Pro 12.9 Ver.1, iPadOS 14.6. Apple library has nearly 800 albums in it (if that helps!)..Version: 1.2.0

A good idea, but only for very mainstream tastesThis app isn’t bad, it’s just not very useful. If your musical tastes run even slightly outside of the narrow, current mainstream you are likely to be met with a lot of “there’s no data about this recording” messages. In short, the app over-promises and under-delivers, and blaming the lack of online data to draw from seems a bit disingenuous..Version: 2.0.0

DisappointedI purchased this app hoping to get musician credits. The best I found was a link to allmusic, which I could have done without spending $1.99. How hard can it be to include this information???.Version: 1.1.9

Now playing not reliableI’m on iOS 16.4.1 and think the app is great but doesn’t reliably update the now-playing song info - for example, if I’m playing the an Apple Music Radio station and the song changes I refresh and tap the headphones but it continues to only show me the first song that had been playing.. I can get it to update if I crash the app and then try again and it’ll get the current playing son. This makes it fairly annoying to use how I want to. I have also tried with Amazon Music and the now playing doesn’t seem to be picked up..Version: 2.0.0

DisappointingThe credits/liner notes built into the TIDAL is way better than this - and free. I’ve compared a number of albums that had extensive info on Tidal and minimal info on this app. Hopefully it improves….Version: 1.3.2

DisappointingI hope this app gets better. I don’t use Apple Music, but I bought this app based on a couple glowing reviews that said it works with your library in addition to Apple Music. It can’t find the vast majority of my library, whether downloaded from iTunes or copied from CDs. They touted that it’ll tell you which musicians are credited on albums and tracks like I miss from the liner notes of yore. But it doesn’t do that on the few songs it was able to identify. Instead it offered a links to music videos or banal snippets about the artist like where they were born. Not at all what I was expecting. Frankly I’d like my money back..Version: 1.0.0

Does not live up to it’s promisesI’m not sure if my expectations were too high from all the glowing reviews, but I’m really bummed this app does not deliver. I really enjoy finding new songs in Apple Music playlists. Traditionally, I’ll hear something new and search on the internet for more info about the song and artist, usually starting with Wikipedia. Almost every song I’ve tried only shows the track listing for the album. No really information about the song itself or the artist. Would be great to even see the Wikipedia information show up, at the very least..Version: 1.0.3

Does not work as claimed on OSX MontereyNo share extension that I could find on OSX No supported shortcut on OSX. Does not offer a help utility. Seems that it is primarily focused on IOS..Version: 1.3.4

Doesn’t give creditsI was looking for something like IMDB for music; who wrote lyrics , who played drums, where/when it was recorded. Nothing like that. Also appears to just work with mainstream music.Version: 1.1.4

Liner Notes!I really wish this would work within music. The instructions shows that it will, but when I follow them I am unable to add it in the share menu. I’m on the latest iOS 14.3. I’ve tried twice by deleting and reinstalling. The app’s settings should allow one to keep attempting, but alas... So I find myself using it on its own, reading liner notes while not being able to listen to the tracks. Please make it easier!!.Version: 1.1.6

Not ready for prime time appWanted to love this app... and all the glowing reviews enticed me to give it a try...and what’s not to like...if it did what it said this would have been a stellar app... but unfortunately it didn’t deliver...have no idea why there were 5 star reviews... you can’t even search...yikes! And the lack of info on so many well known albums is baffling.. The best part of this experience is at least the developer did respond to an inquiry... However there needs a lot and I mean a lot of fixing before this app is a buyable product. Many other sources until then....Version: 1.0.1

Missing many credits.I so often hear obvious instruments that are not credited on tracks. I actually blame Apple for not including liner notes and credits from the begining. Seems nearly “criminal” to sell works without full credits..Version: 1.1.8
