✓ Dont waste your timeYou get to win your first few games and then unless you start paying for points the opponent scores 3-4 goals each game against you it’s completely unfair more scripted than fifa.Version: 1.0.1
✓ Executed poorlyThe concept of this game is incredible but the creators really botched its execution. The whole thing is rigged against you on purpose, the game bullies you into wanting to buy the “upgraded” version because your team is absolutely trash in the beginning. Even when you’re able to see progression in your teams stats the odds will always be against you in certain games. If any team has any offense better than your defense they will score on any turnover 98% of the time. This means every time you score they are extremely likely to score as well and if for any reason it’s turned over, you’ve now trapped yourself in a corner because they are almost guaranteed to score. It also doesn’t matter how good your offense is, if the other teams defense is better than 2 stars they can almost always keep up with your fastest player and will be ready to intercept the ball at any given moment. I’m sure once you’ve played the game a lot the stats of your team will be good enough but there is no sense of real progression because you get beaten all the way there and until that point there will always be a couple of teams who are practically unbeatable..Version: 0.9.11
✓ Endless red cards in hard mode kill itI like this game, played it solidly for 3 weeks now…. alas it’s too easy on medium, and like all games it basically rewards those that spend real money to get anywhere on hard mode. ✓ Fun, but pay to winThe game is fun and has lots of nice little football manager touches to it. However even after purchasing the ability to keep playing it becomes clear that even with a fully upgraded stadium you can’t maintain a proper 5 star squad without micro transactions. ✓ A major bug in the purchases?I really like this game. Almost as addictive as Retro Bowl, and I’m loving the favourite team aspect and ability to play in different countries. However I think there’s a major bug in the purchases function. I’ve twice tried to buy players and the transaction has gone through, but when I push ‘continue’ the app freezes and restart. When I restart, the purchase hasn’t happened in the game (ie, the player isn’t in jussi as, he’s still listed in the transfer market) , but in real life my back account has been charged. I know we’re not taking huge sums of money but I’ve lost £5 to this game now, and that shouldn’t happen..Version: 0.9.9

✓ ContractsThe game and the premise is extremely good and challenging but I am concerned about how the contracts work. At the start of the season you must renew all players contracts even though the season before it shows that the players contracts will expire in 8/9 years time. Probably Costing about 3000 coins which is basically impossible to obtain without buying them. This essentially stops the player and the club from growing without the usage of IRL money. So it’s basically pay to win.Version: 0.9.11
✓ Pay to ContinueI have nothing against paid games but after playing for 30 minutes it told me to pay to continue, if you’re advertising a game as free and then making it so you have to pay to continue playing its just scummy, if you were to place the same price tag on the game alone I would have bought it. ✓ Addictive but annoying in app purchasesGame is addictive and fun but…. The only annoying bit is that, although this is not a pay to win, the best players require you to spend real cash, regardless of how much you have in game. In my 4th season now and the best forward I can get is an old 3.5 stars player, when the 4+ stars one are all behind a paywall. I wouldn’t have minded paying a bit more for the game upfront but I don’t like those hidden mechanics requiring you to pay to keep progressing. ✓ Great gameplay but geared towards IAPLove the game, gameplay is really fun and the lite touch management is perfect for mobile. However marked down 2 stars, as it’s a paid for game but the economics mean it’s incredibly tough to even tread water and earn enough coins to replace out of contract players (even with worse ones). It’s clearly designed to encourage you to buy coin packs. I’d much rather the game cost 2.99 or 3.99 and allowed you to earn through playing, and reduce the IAP to Premium Players only..Version: 0.9.2
✓ Doesn’t live up to its potentialI love retro bowl and I love to play soccer with friends, so I downloaded retro goal and tried it out and immediately though on opening “Wow this is incredibly different” which is good that it differentiates itself from retro bowl, then I started the tutorial, the money system: not very good, it feels like things are more overpriced, but I did like the fact that it actually took time to build up your stadium and boost player morale, now here’s the thing that really burns me, ITS NOT FREE TO PLAY!!!! You have to pay to even play after 10 games?? It’s also incredibly pay to win, controls are harder and players stop moving after they receive a pass, as well as corner kicks being impossible. To summarize, retro bowl is better for free to play, this is more the pro all done with retro bowl ready for something else game, looks good on paper just done badly..Version: 0.9.11

✓ Wanted to like it, but difficulty levels are bizarreI started off loving it and couldn’t work out what people were complaining about. Paid my 99p gladly, and to be fair I’ve certainly had 99p worth of fun - I can’t complain about the price. But having breezed through “normal” difficulty, I decided to start a new game in “hard” - but it was quite simply impossible. I’ve been through a season and a half nearly and have not won a single game, and only drawn two, the rest all losses. It’s absurd how the difficulty jumps - considering after “hard” there is also an “extreme” mode, but frankly it can’t get more extreme than losing every game can it? And of course it’s a vicious circle, because the more you lose the harder it is to win because good players don’t want to join, existing players lose morale and then start getting red cards (which also bans them from the next game) and your ticket takings are low. The cynic in me wonders if this is to push people toward paying for the “premium” players for their team, but maybe that’s not the case. Either way, I’m bored of winning every game on “normal” and bored of losing every game on “hard” so this one’s deleted..Version: 0.9.2

✓ Fun, but not as good as Retro Bowl yetI enjoy the gameplay, and I love the amount of leagues and team they have, but the difficulty balancing and money system is not good. (At least in England) Normal mode is just too easy and hard mode is way to hard, since you don’t get nearly enough money to keep or buy any players and coaches, or upgrade facilities. It seems like they are trying to force you into buying more in game money, similar to how they force you to pay a dollar to play more than 10 games. Although to be fair, I did not have this problem with the USA leagues so it might be a balancing issue with some of the leagues. They have always been so wonderful at adding great updates in Retro Bowl, so I don’t doubt they will do the same with this game. It is a good game considering it just came out, so I will still be playing this and I will be looking forward for future updates!.Version: 0.9.6

✓ Great to begin withTook me a while to get use to the game mechanics, but when I got into it I really started enjoying the game. However, you soon realise that it costs too much to maintain a decent squad and you find yourself having to let players go… which is pretty much the situation I found with NSS, you can enjoy to a certain point but eventually you have to spend real money to progress. I realise the game is initially free, but I’d rather pay up front and have a more enjoyable experience for longer. As much as I enjoy the game, I’m going to leave it alone after too long as my squad dwindles and progress stalls..Version: 0.9.6
✓ Pay to playI love many of the mechanics of this simple game, but others feel very artificial and constrained. The economy of buying/selling and upgrading is busted—players who improve are nearly impossible to resign, and it is bizarre that you keep the currency even when you move to a bigger club. I improved a defender a lot over the first year of the game and had to sell a second player at the start of the next season to afford to retain him. But somehow the contract (nearly 600 of the in-game currency) was for only two or three games? I didn’t notice until it was time to renew him again, this time for $800, which I had not expected and could not afford. To put that in perspective, that’s most of the way to what you get from a three dollar purchase. I have the no ads version, and I even paid for more of the currency once, expecting it to go a bit further. But no more. I feel like my enjoyment is being held at ransom.Version: 1.0.0
✓ Has some issues, but a fun game overallAs a big fan of retro bowl I was really excited seeing this game hit the App Store, although it pains me to say it, it’s definitely a step down in its current state. The controls follow the same style of retro bowl where most of the interaction is swiping and dragging, but in soccer there’s far less downtime and so it feels a lot clunkier here. I often find myself accidentally shooting the ball backwards when I meant to make my player run a certain way. Also, the entire defensive element of the game is just luck based rabbit hole gameplay. It feels really punishing and un-fun to see your team give up 2 goals because you got unlucky and it’s just out of your control, finally gotta say my biggest issue is when the forwards get this little yellow flag over their head and just stop playing, as someone who doesn’t have a soccer background I have no clue why this happens but I gotta say It is incredibly frustrating to pass to someone, see them get that flag icon, and they just let the ball roll away, I think there needs to be a better indicator/explanation as to why that happens and how to avoid it. I will say despite it’s flaws I have had a lot of fun playing the game. But there’s just some mechanics that are so frustrating and unclear it spoils the experience a bit..Version: 0.9.2
✓ DisappointingEasily the worst New Star Soccer game, the control on this one are just no good unfortunately. You should be able to select which player is slide tackling or control the movement of other players off the ball (as you could in the original as a captain) just for a couple of examples. Agree with other reviews that a ball shouldn’t immediately become a lobbed pass over a certain distance also. Bit of a shame but if you’re looking for a great football game go with New Star Soccer or New Star Manager..Version: 0.9.9

✓ Great potential, but bookings and injuries need to be adjustedThis is a fun retro game with tremendous potential. The game play is great for a phone - fun but not to crazy to make it frustrating. In addition, the club management functions are outstanding. Buying/selling players and managing the club throughout the season are exciting and well done. The biggest problem with this game is the ridiculous booking and injury rate. Im averaging a red card per game and an injury every few games. None of my players have poor traits; the AI generates the fouls. It negatively affects the entire game; I'm constantly playing with 9-10 men and my best players are out for 2-3 game stretches. Add on an injury every few games and its hard to get ahead without spending tons of money to buy a bunch of subs. I don't mind spending money on good games, but I don't want to feel like its wasted. I would rate this game 5-stars if the developers fixed the booking and injury rate..Version: 0.9.9
✓ Logic?The only few problems I have with this game is like for one, every 4-5 star player wants good training facilities, don’t get me wrong I get that but like if you switch teams it’s hard to get new players because you have to max out the facilities or else you don’t get any players you want. Retro bowl was nothing like that, you could get any player you want without maxing out anything which was much easier and not as complicated as retro goal. Lastly, if you go to a really good team, you should already have great players, for example Bayern, Barca etc you switch to those teams and neither of them have a single good player. Make it make sense! I’m not saying they should be packed but like even if it’s just a 4-5 star defender or midfielder it would be better than nothing. I’m playing as Bayern and I’m literally getting dominated by teams that are trash in real life and I have no good players like what? I like the game yes, but it has a lot of flaws that kinda make the game sour and make you a bit upset. I don’t like how you have to buy the whole version after ten games, retro bowl was a great game that didn’t force you to do that. I did have a 5 star striker and he literally can’t score, all he does is hit crossbar. ✓ Very DisappointedI am absolutely in love with RETRO BOWL and I’ve been playing it since it came out I have won every achievement and spent money on the game and still play it often. I was hoping RETRO GOAL was going to provide the same kind of lovely arcade style sports game but sadly IT DID NOT…First off, why is my team the only people with no competence no matter what start level they are. In what world would a 5 start player gain control of a ball and run a straight line out of bounds and no teammates make an attempt to make a run and if they do every single time my team gains possession they’re facing the wrong way because as I said they NEVER RUN FOWARD? How am I supposed to play authentic futball when my team acts like they don’t know how to play. I am playing as PSG with all 5 star stats and easy difficulty. I should not be getting angry at the ridiculous AI. Not to mention every time the other team touches the ball they somehow accurately clear it across the pitch and I miss my opportunity every time. The game is just downright unfair I already said I would spend money on it so I don’t know why it has to be so difficult to accomplish things. Please make the AI more responsive and play like real players. When they get the ball stop making them stand there backwards to goal. It’s unfair and unrealistic. ✓ The game works 10% of the timeHeaders only work if your on the other side of the field for some reason. Try to get a header? Team runs away from the ball, try to pass to team. They run away too, try to score a goal? Nope goalie saves it by someone grabbing the ball while standing up from 2 meters away. All of your starting team members should be in Little League because they run at the speed as a grandma, the only good people you have to buy for like 2,000 dollars. The enemy team somehow never gets yellow cards or red cards (even though they should). For some reason playing for the USA makes it impossible to lose but playing for Germany makes it so that all your players have brain damage. The AI acts like I programmed it from scratch. I win every game for a while only one (bad) team wants to hire me. Lose a bunch everyone wants to hire me. If I had to choose one game that fits “if everything is broken nothing is broken” I'd choose this one. Also every like 3 games I get an advertisement to get the better version..Version: 1.0.1

✓ Great game but contract length/extension are too short!The game is very good and very fun. Has great gameplay and truly makes you so involved. However, I noticed that contract lengths are a lie in this game. I had a player with 3 years on his contract but next season he only had a few weeks left. ✓ Seems good but is badI downloaded the game and at first it was fun. i was new so i played easy and it was on offense. Almost every time they needed a goal or 2 they got it. I would have to score almost all my chances. The reason this is bad is you CANT PLAY DEFENSE!!! WHY? This is soccer not football. It is so easy to make defense but the creators don’t, if you don’t have possession behind midfield it’s called “ Chance Missed” even if you’re player was going to get it. The AI always waists so much time and even on easy will score. Some other minor issues is i’ve tried and tried but a midfielder unless on corner or a crazy rare shot behind the box cannot score. As soon as the player dribbles near the box he passes to an attacker no matter what, even if you control the player you don’t. Similarly players will randomly shoot when i want to dribble. Finally, every time the goalie hits it and it should go out it stops at the line and you are forced to miraculously save it without getting slide tackled. THIS HAPPENS ALMOST EVERY TIME. The worst part is the game is not only pay to win with the new currency that costs more than Retro Bowl but it’s also just pay to play as after ten games you must pay to continue. Overall it’s ok but not as good as Retro Bowl so save your money..Version: 0.9.21

The problem is that you need to buy extra credit if you want to keep the players as you are always running too low in money. ✓ Good game but needs Precision controlsThe games art style and the managing part is very fun but the controls of dribbling compared to shooting as well as the team Ai can be rage inducing. Moments like Trying to shoot only for the air to do backheel, opposition regaining the ball when the inability to select the nearest teammate to tackle giving us Chance missed is very frustrating as a player. It would be nice in future updates to implement movement stick as well as a feature to select individual players by tapping on them when losing possession of the ball.Version: 0.9.2

✓ Good but FlawedReally enjoyable little game with surprisingly deep management mode. Great to be able to take control of so many teams and get youth players etc. Gameplay is also fun once you get used to the controls. However the way the game is set up to almost force you into microtransactions is a huge drawback. Players are so expensive and their contracts so short that it feels impossible to actually build a squad that lasts - all of your players simply leave, either midway through the season or at the end, and you can’t afford to renew their contracts. At the end of the season your team is basically gutted and you have to start from scratch, or you join a new team which also has essentially no players. Then you obviously lose games, which means no one wants to join and no money, rinse and repeat as nauseum. Unless - you buy some coins or players. Then suddenly you can compete! I have managed to avoid this so far but it feels like the game is pushing you in that direction. Unfortunately really want to love this game but can’t rate it 5 stars. ✓ LET ME PLAY IT MY SELFI will lob pass the ball then they will have it then it will fall back to my feet but it says chance missed and that brings me onto my next point when the other team are on the attack you can’t control the people to tackle it has made me lose 4 games out of the first 10 I’ve played. I also hate when the other team clears it but I win the ball and it still says chance miss even tho I could still lob pass it and not concede I have nearly just not got promoted because of it . Tbh it kinda a disgrace how when the other team score 1 after another cause if the other team scores you should start kickoff like a normal game it’s got even worse i was 4-0 up before half time but as soon as the whistle went to start the second half I couldn’t play conceded 5 goals and at last I could play in the 95th minute but as soon as I kicked it the whistle went to end the game.Version: 1.0.1

✓ Good game in here somewhereI never ever wrote reviews but this game is so frustrating I should I would give some feedback. I loved NSS and played Retro Bowl for 40 seasons. Both games brought huge amounts of joy. New star manager was slightly disappointing only insofar as it was more a freemium game. That said you could still play it and succeed without paying for ‘bux’. With this game I just can’t see how you can succeed without paying real money. I’m happy to pay for games, I got far more than my money’s worth from NSS and Retro Bowl so maybe I shouldn’t complain but with this it’s impossible to keep a team going, update a stadium and do all the other things that are demanded each season. It’s a shame because there’s a good game waiting to get out here but it’s hamstrung by a freemium mindset..Version: 0.9.2

✓ Fun up to a pointRoster/team building part of the game is great. Really enjoy that it can take quite a while to build a juggernaut as opposed to Retro Bowl where you can do it in two off-seasons. Gameplay experience is… just ok. Hard mode is fairly challenging at first because your players are slow, so you have to make a lot of passes. But you have some margin for error. Once that becomes too easy, though, all you’re left with is extreme difficulty which from my experience so far requires incredibly precise passing and almost immediate reactions. I probably wouldn’t bother if your roster isn't full of 4 to 5* (or super fast if worse than that) players. This is the same issue Retro Bowl had, although I find extreme much easier in that game. Devs need to find a happy medium in terms of difficulty, which could honestly be achieved by just making it harder to score when you shoot toward the top of the screen..Version: 0.9.15
✓ DisappointedAs Retro Bowl is so brilliant I thought I’d give this a try but I was disappointed as I don’t understand why you can’t play by swiping your device as in Retro Bowl, unless I am missing something. This is what makes Retro Bowl so great. I have tried Retro Ball twice but just find the controls too fiddly. Retro Bowl was instantly playable, pick up and play, but with a great learning curve. I have won 106 bowls including a couple on extreme. In future I’d like to see MVP for the final itself, teams rated on both run and pass for offence and defence and some variety in extreme mode as making them all 5 star gets a bit monotonous. In terms of Retro Ball I would suggest adding a swipe option so more device friendly. Apologies if this is already an option but I lost interest with it very quickly..Version: 0.9.9

✓ Money and Team TrainingMoney is earned very slowly, you need to go through a lot of seasons in order to buy normal players, but you are struggling very hard due to the fact that you need to constantly increase morale and lvl up, update the contract and heal. If you assemble a full team, then there is not enough money at all for them to live up to half of the season at least. some of the moments and just score 3 goals and knock the ball out of the field to finish the match already. The money that was earned in the international competition cannot be taken away either, so why did we earn it then? I thought it could be different. The game is normal, but the minus is very strong in coins, so if you do not plan to invest a lot of personal money in the game or you are not one of those who like to collect coins for a long time, the game is not for you. Once this is fixed it will be much better for everyone. And the interest will remain the same.Version: 0.9.21

✓ Could be goodThis game has potential, but it’s a far cry from its predecessor, Retro Bowl. The controls are wonky. Be prepared for your player to stop running as you furiously swipe across the screen trying to get them upfield. Opponent’s defenders are routinely beating your player with max speed to the ball. Slide tackling is a mess that usually ends a dogpile until one of your players falls and can’t get up and the computer walks the ball across the half line. Don’t try a through ball through the air to your forwards, it’ll either go to far and the keeper will scoop it up, or the defender will turn in to Usain Bolt and get there just in time to head the ball to safety. If the opponent scores first, the best hope you have for that match is a tie. In those games, if you score, the other team will always have an answer. If you score first, you’ll likely run away with the game, unless you’re playing one of the top tier teams in the league, in which case get prepared for come from behind goals from your opponent ad nauseam..Version: 0.9.3

✓ Has potential to be specialI downloaded this game and had fun after the first 10 games and decided to purchase the full game. Game has been super fun to play and I have not spent a single day not playing the game. However, I’ve played the game for quite some time now and have some complaints about it. My first complaint is the dreading “Chance Missed”. What’s the point of having a great goalkeeper and amazing set of defenders if I can’t use them to play defense against the opposite team? I’d love to be able to defend against the opposing team instead of seeing the “chance missed” message. My second complaint is player contracts. They make no sense. I had player contracts that were supposed to last 4 years+. However, after the season had ended, player contracts would be near of even expiring, which is really annoying. Not sure if it’s a glitch or what but please fix this. Other than that, I think that player and stadium customization would be great. Lastly, when switching to a big team, players should not be poor along with training ground, youth academy, etc. If I get the opportunity to switch to a team like Real Madrid, I would expect to have a great set of players. ✓ Could be very goodWhen the ball is cleared by the opponent straight towards my defenders, with no opponent forwards anywhere near, the play is over -just because the ball crossed the halfway line. This is extremely unrealistic and just annoying, running lots of plays. Adding some skill moves (e.g. the roulette, nutmeg,elastico,…) would make beating defenders a lot more entertaining. Penalties and free kicks should be shown in an on field perspective (life FIFA). Tactics should be easier to change. Show what is happening during defensive plays, so people can directly see who is bad and who is good, and what players’ weaknesses and strengths are in an interesting way. Give 2x and 3x time options for those who don’t want to see things in such detail. Make time move when passing ball around (for example, after every 10 moves, 5 mins should have been played)..Version: 1.0.1
