CNET: News, Advice & Deals for Negative User Reviews

App stopped workingJust received an app update and now won’t open :-(.Version: 4.7.12

Ads make the app unusable! You can’t even scroll through the articles without irrelevant ads popping up, let alone open an article. I used to love this app, but the ads are crazy. The ads are not the watch 5 seconds and skip type either. You are punished with the longest ads and hidden x..Version: 4.8.9

Could be betterWhen the app works, the articles are great to read and informative. But when it doesn’t, which lately it has not it becomes frustrating to navigate. Also, please update the videos to match the content of the articles directly. Often the videos within the articles are generic and don’t cover the content within the article. I rather read the article instead of clicking on a video and getting my hopes up only to find out that the video is generic and doesn’t cover anything to do with the article..Version: 4.7.8

Frustrating “Outdated” MessageIn general I have always found CNET to be a great news app. I have been a CNET fan since before they even had an app. Before phones were even smart! So, it is with great dismay that I have to lower my rating to just 3 stars. Every time I open the app for about a year now, it gives me a message that I’m using an outdated version of the app that isn’t supported. My phone updates automatically & the version is up to date. Once I open the App Store, The button for the app says OPEN not UPDATE. I press it and it opens fine, but it is really frustrating that I need to open it through the App Store every time. I have tried deleting and reinstalling, but it only lasts until the next update. Please fix this!!.Version: 4.7.9

FrustratingFor about the last 2 years, every time I click a pop up notification telling me about a new article, I click on it and not only does it not bring me to the article but the article is nowhere to be found without 10 minutes of digging. Within that 10 minutes of digging, the app just crashes and freezes. This has also been going on for 2 years. Out of date articles also take up 90 percent of the home page. On the plus side, articles pertaining to my interests are enjoyable to read..Version: 4.8.0

Embarrassing for a tech site appToo often the stories don’t load, and other reviews have also noted the strange ‘two-app system’ that has occurred after recent updates. Really, for a tech site to offer such poor quality is hard to understand. Beyond that, while there are some good in-depth articles and reviews (most recently thinking of one on electric cars), there are also too many that are weak in content and writing and are inadequately edited… including another recent article specifically discussing dates for a product release… that didn’t even have the dates included! Clearly intended to be but an incomplete sentence. None of this inspires confidence in CNET..Version: 4.7.2

Continuous Refreshing and ResortingThe continuous resorting of the articles and advertisements on the home page has made this new version of the app totally unusable. This even occurs when quickly scrolling backwards with the most annoyed reshuffling occurring when you are reading the headlines of an individual article. It seems the the app knows the expected reading timeframe for each story and is quickly replacing it with an advertisement with intent to obtain an unsolicited click. What’s next, following YouTube’s newly implementation of providing a link so that a users can send themself a direct link to the advertisement. CNET, have look at the feedback that other users are expressing about their disappointment on the reshuffling of the articles. Once again, let’s not forget the multiple articles on the best shows/movies to watch within streaming service over providing unique technically based articles. Your users; no let’s gets this right, your products, are now being forced to use the web version of this once great app with an ad blocker. Time to scale it back and maintain your advertisement revenue instead getting greedy and forcing your products to circumvent your advertisement strategy..Version: 4.9.1

StalledThe new app stalls..Version: 4.7.2

Videos don’t loadVideos virtually never completely load.Version: 4.7.4

Not sure how a tech site can be so bad at thisI enjoy the content normally, but this is a review of the app. It’s so hard to use, non intuitive gestures, and for some dumb reason a video loads almost every time I click on an article and most of the time it’s not even related. I can see someone in a conference room saying “pivot to video!” If we click an article, just give us the article..Version: 4.7.0

Good app but very flawedFirst of all, there’s this notification bug where the first notification I clicked on my phone takes me to the homepage of the app instead of the article. However, the new update says it was fixed, but I have yet to try that out. Also, there’s no two factor authentication in the app and it’s not completely optimized for the iPad. Also we need a filter to filter out news we don’t want to see, like politics.Version: 4.7.8

This app is now unusableCNET app developers, what is your problem???!!! I receive emails from CNET, but, every time I click on a link in one of them, I get a popup telling me to update the app. Updating the app and trying the link again produces the same result. This has been going on for weeks, and complaints from other users are ignored. I give up. I’m deleting this app and unsubscribing from CNET’s emails. Thanks for worse than nothing, CNET..Version: 4.7.2

Really Needs A RevampI REALLY want to like this app, but—compared to iOS and iPadOS—the tvOS version is extremely “kludgey”. As soon as the app opens, a video starts playing, and it’s extremely confusing to know how to stop it because the only option is “KEEP PLAYING”. Not to mention, there are no settings for the app at all, which also means you aren’t able to log into an account (if you so choose). Also—after finally figuring out what was going on—when select a video to watch, instead of staying in the same (screen) position you were on, you are brought all the way back to the top… where you are “stuck” in the “KEEP PLAYING” position. I really hope this is replaced with much better UI/UX soon..Version: 4.8.9

Getting worseThe reasons to not use this app keeps piling up. The latest is the constant referral back to the App Store for an upgrade even though the app was already upgraded and installed on my devices. To top things off, it seems as if any item you open comes with a video ad you can’t shut off. If CNET doesn’t show a more user oriented approach, their app will be ancient history on all of my devices.Version: 4.7.2

Constantly crashingI think it’s weird for an app that revolves around the tech industry would constantly crash. Happens to me at least once a day. And for some reason it thought I had rotated my phone even though it was in the same exact position..Version: 4.7.8

Buggy and disorganized. This app routinely fails. It often opens to (non-functioning) links and not articles. It frequently stops running. Its search capabilities are illogical and barely responsive to the inquiry, showing it years-old posts despite current content. It’s poorly organized. It’s just not good. Loved CNET forever. But their website and app have become frustrating experiences that aren’t worth your time..Version: 4.9.3

Buggy as hell crashes way too oftenI used to love this app but crashes a lot and has done for many years and releases, just use their website..Version: 4.7.9

Hopeless keeps asking to be updatedI can’t open my newsletters any more and keep getting a message saying “You are using an old version of the App and to click on the link to update it”. Well, did that, tried to open newsletter, and AGAIN got the message “You are using an older version of the App…” immediately after downloading the supposed NEWER VERSION !! 😡 DELETED ALL VERSIONS, restarted my iPad, so NO CNET Apps were on the iPad, downloaded the supposed NEW VERSION AGAIN, tried to open newsletter, only to be confronted with the “You are using an older version of the App, Click Here to download latest version”!!! Talk about going around in circles. 😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬.Version: 4.9.3

Good lord it’s nothing but credit card adds and ‘best’ listsI am sorry but this app is an embarrassment. It takes too long to find the actual articles amid the sea of credit card ‘articles’ and ‘best’ lists..Version: 4.9.3

Embedded linksWhat is with the recent trend of putting links in an article in the app just to view the story in a web browser. Why? What is the point of the app then? Just put the text/graphics/video of an article/story in the app. Thank you!.Version: 4.9.3

Trying to force installation of safari pluginEvery time I have signed into the app in the last couple of weeks I have been confronted with a difficult to sign away from page that wants me to sign up for a Safari plugin that I simply do not want. It keeps coming up and I will never sign in with it. This is nagware. This is disgusting from an organization, such as CNET..Version: 4.8.9

Email articles do not openThey use to open on a second or third try but no longer. Also most cannot be found on The site.Version: 4.7.4

New Version is a separate app?!?!!! and still sucks!!!Instead one upgraded app, I now have 2 CNET apps that have that exact same crappy UI that I’ve had to navigate for years. Except now, my bookmarked stories from the old app never migrated to the new version. Now I can’t read the articles and watch the videos I bookmarked prior to the update. Starting the original app forces you to the app store, where it installs a brand new app instead of an upgraded version..Version: 4.7.2

CNET used to stay focused on tech newsIt is with some hesitation, but I am deleting all of my CNET apps today. Why? They expanded their coverage into topics like abortion, gerrymandering, and other topics that have very tangential relationships to tech news. Sorry, when you do tech news, good; when you write story after story about a common news topic that other common interest media offers, you are out of bounds. So, 3 stars for when there is tech news..Version: 4.8.2

Stop it with Stimulus Check, Tax Credit, etc repeatsStop spamming this crap, day after day … get somebody to limit articles to ONE, instead of 4 on the iPhone 13 in a day … fix your categories ( apple posted under google etc ) and fix you Update system. I don’t need this your version is out of date download a new duplicate crap..Version: 4.7.2

Why stories such as iPhone 13 rumours still being promoted in 2022I keep seeing stories about iPhone 13 rumours still being promoted on the app in May 2022 !!??!! Something is wrong since I am reading it on my iPhone 13 when I should be seeing stories about iPhone 14 ?!.Version: 4.8.1

Good info on a bad appSo many times the carousel doesn’t load or always bounces back to the first item. Just a terrible app that I constantly need to force quit and reload. If it wasn’t for the fact that I enjoy many of the stories on CNET I would be deleting this app pretty fast..Version: 4.8.6

Too many repeatsCNET is getting really bad about repeating news stories. Honestly, if I didn’t want to read about it the first time. Listing the same story multiple times isn’t going to get me to read it. I am perfectly able to scroll through the list. Take the hint. Redundancy isn’t necessary..Version: 4.8.9

I like CNET, but their iOS apps are awful.I can only ever get one or two videos to load, 99% of video content does not load whether on my 500mb WiFi connection, or on 4G/5G. The Apple TV apps are exactly the same as on my iPhone - nothing loads. Really astounding that it’s been that way for quite some time now so I just get my Tech News elsewhere..Version: 4.7.2

I’m continually appalled at how terrible the search function isThe leader in technology reporting can’t seem to get it together when it comes to making a functional search feature. It ranges anywhere from barely adequate to frustratingly incompetent. Maybe they could take that chatAI algorithm they were using to write stories and somehow use it towards upping their search game instead..Version: 4.9.3

Keeps getting worse…Every update makes this app worse and worse. Now every time I try to open it, it’s asks me to update to the new version. Do they test the app updates before releasing? It’s ironic they have such a poor “tech” app when nearly their entire platform (reason for being) is based on reviewing technology I’m also fed up with the constant political articles. I use to go to this to escape politics… but it smacks me in the face nearly every time I look at. Very disappointing!!! I just have to erase the app and get out of the habit of looking at it….Version: 4.7.10

More clickbait than techI used to really like this app but somewhere along the way they forgot they were a technology site and became your centralized source for all things “stimulus”. At one point 7 of the 10 of the articles articles you could swipe through at the top were all different slants on the latest - or the potential next - stimulus package. Maybe that’s how to fund a tech purchase but it’s not Tech. Who knows? Maybe during the height of the pandemic and stimulus payouts they were seeing a huge bump in traffic from new users. Catering to them was short-sited because now those of us that used them for their core namesake mission are moving on. I hope they have another set of clickbait stories to replace the traffic. I guess it’s possible that C/Net Really meant Clickbait/Net and I just never realized. To make matters worse they just released a required update that doesn’t work and won’t let you use the app until you successfully update. So to recap… a tech site that doesn’t report on tech and broke their own app. Great. Move along. There are so many other options for tech news. May as well use a site that actually gives tech news. If I want stimulus information, I’m not seeking it out from a tech news site..Version: 4.7.2

Interesting but unstableI’ve checked CNET for years and find their reviews helpful. The app on iPad is unstable though. I’m looking at story choices then the screen gets re-arranged because ads flip on and off moving the stories to a new location. So, the content is 4-5 stars but the app is a 3 because of instability of presentation..Version: 4.9.1

Great App Except the Updates?!Overall I really enjoy CNET. I find the articles informative, especially those about Facebook which I rarely use these days. My only issue is that the updates don’t appear in the AppStore. I could update 10 apps and two minutes later when I open CNET it tells me it needs to be updated. Huh? Why didn’t the update show up before? The last time this happened I couldn’t get it to update when I opened it. Thankfully I was able to update it directly through the AppStore. However I then discovered that I had two different versions of CNET. Please resolve this matter so I am not forced to remove it altogether..Version: 4.7.2

Truly terribleWhy, of all companies, is CNET incapable of delivering a decent app? This thing crashes all the time, is very laggy, and has a very basic UI..Version: 4.8.6

Worlds buggiest AppI really like cnet and their content; the App however is a complete disaster. It keeps crashing, articles can often not be loaded and sometimes the entire content is not loading at all (internet connection works fine; only this App doesn’t work). Since I like cnet I switched back to reading on their website, but it is simply not a great experience on a phone.Version: 4.7.10

Good if you live in 2019Once you try to go to any product categories, all the articles are from years ago. iPhone 11 is the top phone, the cars are all 2019 models, and the top laptop came out in 2018. Can’t do categories in deals section. Only the news section is up to date..Version: 4.7.5

MikeyNeeds updateing Cuts out with 16.4 ios.Version: 4.9.3

Links from email to app don’t open in appYou send out emails with links to stories that you think i should read. if i take link iI get an error message saying i am using an outdated version of mobile app but in fact i am using most current version. i cannot open article and have to open app and scroll thru stories in app to find the one in email. thanks frustrated.Version: 4.9.3

Lost their wayThis used to be a useful app, with insightful articles. Now it is just a buggy app that requests nonstop updates, and it still won’t work. And latest articles about stuff I don’t want to hear about. Sad when you see a group lose their way, right in front of your eyes. Guess they are trying to catch up with newsprint media on the coaster ride down..Version: 4.7.2

CNET losing focusUsed to love CNET, but now the articles are getting away from the tech focus that made them great. CNET is moving toward a general news channel with constant updates on tax refunds and vaccine items. And like general news outlets, it almost always tells the popular political side. No thanks, I want news that tells the real story like the old tech CNET, not some political garbage on CNN..Version: 4.7.2

Horrible on AppleTVIt seems that the CNET videos on Apple’s Podcasts stopped being updated in July ‘22, and so I installed the app on my AppleTV. Aside from the horrible navigation, inability to mark series to remember, some content (Cooley, Roadshow) has been empty for some time. I liked watching the car reviews, and currently there is nothing useful under the CNET app. So content lacks and even if it didn’t, the app itself on AppleTV is a disaster..Version: 4.9.1

Your app is this bad and you’re a tech website?Lots of crashes. Almost impossible to find the article I actually want. I will get notifications about new articles but when I tap on them it just takes me to the front page of the app and then I can’t find the article. The actual content is usually pretty good (besides the click bait) it’s just that the app is almost unusable :(.Version: 4.8.1

Vaccine cards and Apple WalletWe were excited to find an article that claimed it would guide us in adding our COVID-19 vaccine cards to our Apple Wallets. Alas, nowhere in the article were there actual how-to instructions. In addition, the article showed that our home state of Oregon has an app where we can add the card - but provided no link or even an app name. A half hour later… Lame..Version: 4.7.5

Doesn’t work on Apple TVEmpty screen and Spinning gear wheel when choosing a storey to watch..Version: 4.7.2

Where are the car reviews?I still enjoy the app but it’s lost its way to consumer good reviews and items it wants to push on its readers. I still look to the app for great product reviews but where are the car reviews? Where are the great videos showcasing car related topics? This is not the same app I thoroughly enjoyed using a year ago. Hopefully there is a return to our old form..Version: 4.9.3

Constantly needs updatesEvery time I open the app it needs updating and it won’t auto update. It’s a basic browser with some formatting, it shouldn’t change this often.Version: 4.7.5

Notifications don’t lead to a storyEvery once in a while I get a notification from the CNET app that sounds interesting. I tap on the banner and it takes me to the app, but the story that the notification refers to isn’t anywhere to be found. It has happened for as long as I can remember. Also, some of their own ads are ridiculously out of date. There’s still an add that’s titled “What’s coming with the iPhone 13?” or something like that. Hello? Anyone home? I also hate the way that they take the same story and give it a new title so that you’ll hopefully read it again and subject yourself to more ads. Some of the stories are interesting, and the deals occasionally yield a fortuitous purchase. That’s why I’m giving it 2 stars instead of one. I hope that they’ll read the reviews and actually do something about them. One can only hope..Version: 4.7.6

Tech app failHave been using this app for a couple of years. Now it asks for an update each time there is a link Ian an article in the CNET emails that are sent out on a regular basis. I have deleted the app twice and loaded from the App Store so the latest would be loaded one would assume. And each time I am asked to update. This appears to be a scam bait. Embarrassing for a tech savvy company!.Version: 4.7.2

Not Visually-impaired friendlyHi, I use Siri to read to me (especially long articles), and when I swipe down with two fingers to use the accessibility feature, the article text gets interrupted by ads; it’s mildly infuriating, and eventually forces me to close the article and miss all that advertising in your articles. Do better..Version: 4.8.2

ReviewReally good content if you live in America. I live in NZ. It would be nice to have more geographically relevant content..Version: 4.9.2

Good content, dysfunctional appGreat content, but it’s really puzzling how such a tech company hasn’t managed to put together an app that works. Sudden crashes, takes time to load and other problems….Version: 4.7.9

App crashes constantlyThe app is glitchy and has always had crashing issues. The latest is as bad as ever. This is over several idevices over several years. Funny a company based on technology has such a terrible app. Also they liked being woke libtards under the trump presidency. We want tech news not your political opinions, you turds..Version: 4.7.4

Crashes on openingCrashes on opening since today.Version: 4.9.3

Updated? Really?!Better to use their website🤨.Version: 4.7.2

Just a terrible app when it’s even working. There are a lot of poorly working apps for the iPhone and iPad but the CNET app is head and should BELOW the rest. On my iPad it rarely loads correctly and even when it does it usually won’t let me pull up the story. In my phone it is maybe 10% better. How is it that a company as large as CBS not make an app that works!!!.Version: 4.8.8
