Fantasy Hike for Negative User Reviews

It’s good butIt’s good but I wish u didn’t have to pay to walk more than 1.5k a day. Because of that my estimated arrival time isn’t till 2027 which is very annoying.Version: 1.3

Great!I like it! But I’d like to be able to see my friends along the path with me if they also have the app..Version: 1.6.1

Almost Perfect!!I loveee this app!!! I think the one thing that would make it 1000x better for me is if the map was improved. If we could zoom in on it and see in slightly closer detail where we are along the journey + if names of locations were written on the map. Generally just making the map more interesting nothing too crazy but slightly more detail - but so much that it removed the mystery of the walk! Just things like “Rivendell” and “Moriah” written on the map, and the ability to zoom in and see it a bit clearer would be cool. Also I agree with other reviewers that you move extremely quickly thought interesting areas and then very slowly along flat planes - I guess this is more accurate to the story tbf but balancing it out just a bit more or at least having the environment at least change more while walking through the blank plane areas would make it better - rather than just moving very slowly over those parts. These are the main things I’d change!! It would also be really cool if you could see on the route where the challenges are (obviously you’d have to be ahead of them but still). Thanks so much for the app! Love it.Version: 2.0.2

Going to try the upgradeI started this quest about a week ago, and using the free version, was only allowed to travel 1 mile per day. I was told my journey would end sometime in 2027. So the inexpensive upgrade seems worthwhile and I may revisit this review after using it. I’m a huge LotR fan and appreciate the work that went into the graphics, but the first 7 miles revealed little of interest. My tiny character is trekking over a landscape that so far is mostly unchanging. I wish I could enlarge areas of the map to see what’s ahead. I hope that with the ability to log more travel, I can reduce Jon Snowflake’s 29 mile lead. Hoping for more interesting things down the road. Thanks to the developers..Version: 1.6.1

Nice ideaThe idea is pretty good, I am enjoying it so far, lots of fun references. However the mechanic of the ‘challengers’ available is so broken. Mr underhill walks ‘fast’ the definition of this seems to be 2 times as fast as you walk…. I am averaging 13km a day, and mr underhill is averaging around 26km a day…A friend has the app, only averaging around 5km a day, and on their app, mr underhill is averaging 10km a day…. Basically it doesn’t matter how far you walk in a day, mr underhill is uncatchable, which is pointless..Version: 2.0.4

Fun concept - Full version lacking potentialNo challenge-friend-mode - a missed opportunity. For $5 the full version would benefit from this feature, and give incentive for users to pay for this upgrade-not only a race against Mr Underhill but a race against other app users..Version: 1.6.1

Motivated appEnjoy this app makes me want to get up and move but ending was a bit of a letdown.Version: 1.7

Loved but now disappointedI used to love this app! It was amazing! But then it just deleted itself off my phone some how, and now that I’ve reinstalled it there are accounts and pay to use features. You now need to pay to have unlimited steps per day or even to go past 1500km! Everything gets worse when you have to pay to use it and this shows. Won’t be using this app ever again and will be telling my friends and others about this! To say I am disappointed would be an understatement..Version: 2.0.1

Good idea… but doesn’t function properlyI really love the idea of this app, but there seems to be an issue with the tracking. I’ve been using it for a couple of days and it never tracks the same amount that my Apple Watch does. It only ever tracks around one mile per day. I’ve seen a few other people with this issue but most of them have seemed to be with fitbits and not Apple Watches so I don’t really know why this is the case. I’m sure that it is fixable since other people have seemed to be able to figure it out but I just haven’t yet. So if I figure it out I will DEF update this review because I’m really excited to use this app properly!.Version: 1.7

Very nice conceptVery cute concept and design, but unfortunately does not track your walking distance well. I followed all troubleshooting steps correctly, double and triple checked and it still will not register long distance walks i have taken 🤷‍♀️.Version: 1.5

Change to subscription model - be warnedI was close to writing a positive review for this lovely app prior to last week, until they changed from a very reasonable one off purchase, to a subscription model for unlimited distance. They justify this through the inclusion of a friends competition - not interested. Shame on the devs for this greedy move. This change invalidates many of the below positive reviews..Version: 2.0.2

Non-Interactive Non-ReponsiveI purchased this app with unlimited daily mileage and family connectivity. A month later the family activity part disappeared and became a subscription based thing. I don’t mind paying reasonable prices for things but they have to give in return and work. $25 seems a little steep for an annual subscription that gives you only a few more avatars to hike with (I assume that is what is meant by avatars) and family connectivity through Apple. That said I would still pay it because I was and still am enjoying sharing this with my daughter. I did actually sign back up for the family plan trial but the app failed to work, I was not granted anymore avatars nor was I reconnected with my daughter. We could see each other but only where we left off on 3/1 when this became a pay for service. I contacted the developer several times with absolutely no response so in the end I canceled the Family trial because I did not wish to pay for nothing more. I suppose I could reinstall the app but I have no idea if that wipes out my progress or reconnects me with my daughter. The unlimited daily mileage is worth the one time purchase, the subscription is useless as you get nothing for it..Version: 2.0.4

Literally don’t bother downloading this lolEssentially useless unless you pay to upgrade.Version: 1.3

Monthly payments :(Was really enjoying this app I didn’t mind spending $5 one time for unlimited but now with the monthly subscription I won’t be continuing to use it.Version: 2.0

Cool app, dumb developersI got this app a few months ago because the idea was pretty cool. Initially it was free, then wanted a few dollars to track your friends alongside you and a couple other features. I was happy to pay the 3 or 4 bucks to support and get some extra features. I logged in today, to see that it’s been changed and I’ve lost some features I ALREADY PAID FOR and the app has switched to a subscription based service. It’s little more than a fitness app, which are available in droves. Only thing that sets it apart is the LOTR references, and it’s not in depth enough to warrant anything close to a monthly subscription. Not everything has to be a a subscription. I’m so sick of this subscription based economy..Version: 2.0.4

A good looking but basic app.A nice app setting a fairly good idea of a goal for people wanting to get fit, comparing your walk against a map of the walk from the shire to middle earth. It’s very nice and smart looking but that’s about it, high on cosmetic, low on content. Some ideas to improve A few friends have signed up, to help with the motivation it would be good to track your progress against theirs, to see how you and your group are doing. The map is fairly high level, be good to have some lower level more granular map to see your progress. IE, let you zoom in. There’s plenty of reference material. Have diversions (or challenges), offer Xkm to go off and see Tom Bombadillo, Ragaghast, Ent’s, Rivendell etc. Or you’re being CJ asked by Wargs, move an extra 3km today to outrun. It’s a good start, hope the above helps. Wes.Version: 1.3

Was good until they went down the monthly payment routeWas super excited to spend the one off payment to unlock the full potential of the app as well as support the devs and app development with a simple one off purchase. The fact that this app was not going to become an addition to my existing list of exhausting subscription services was what excited me to purchase it. To find out that my one off payment is now just basically a month’s subscription value to use the app properly, I’m left with a bad taste in my mouth and frankly disappointed..Version: 2.0.4

It didn’t track my steps correctly :(I was wondering why I was moving so slow as I’m quite active so I downloaded another tracking app, and while fantasy hike said I was doing an average of 1000 steps, this other app said I was doing 2800 on average. I love the idea and it really motivated me in the first few weeks but I wish it was accurate :(.Version: 1.6.1

Not what i thoughtNot what I thought the app would be like, I expected it too be constantly counting steps so you move on the journey, but there’s a limit too how much you can progress in a day which is slightly annoying when you’ve done quite a lot of steps that day. However it’s a very beautiful app and well made.Version: 1.7

Ok appIt was ok. There are large patches where you go 100s of km without getting any new stuff and there is often dark patches where you can’t see what is happening. But other than that it’s not bad and fun to follow along.Version: 1.7

I want to love itI want to love this app so much, I think it’s such a fun concept. I’ve had the full version it for 8 months, however after day 30 it stopped tracking any data. It’s now frozen on day 30, and after being open for a few seconds the app will freeze and not allow me to do anything at all on it, including messaging customer support. I walk 15,000 steps per day - I wish it was tracked!!.Version: 1.7

ImprovementsThings that I think would make this game better would be Being able to add friends that also have the app and having the option to race them along side all of the already existing characters And a second smaller feature I think would improve this app is being able to zoom in on the map.Version: 1.6.1

Cool Idea, but…This app is an awesome idea, but it somehow picked up that I got 22 steps while sleeping. The phone was laying flat on my desk overnight..so unless a ghost picked up my phone trying to walk to Mordor idk how that happened..Version: 1.5

App needs an updateApp will no longer connect to Apple health and also freezes after a few seconds.Version: 1.7

Was 4 stars, if you could just buy the new features 5 starsI bought this app before the latest update and the app was solid but still missing a few things. The new update brings a lot of good things (share with friends) but now it is a subscription. I am all for paying for the new features but just let me buy the features. I also don’t know if I will be able to keep the unlimited steps that I already bought. If things change I will gladly change to 5 stars because I want this app to succeed but really don’t want to pay a subscription just to use an app that is not that mind blowing, just cool. Edit: I do get to keep my unlimited steps, very relived about that. Also if anyone is complaining about having to buy unlimited steps is crazy that app is at least worth that. My gripe is with not owning anything and having to sub..Version: 2.0

App is stuckApp doesn’t change. Since iPhone update the app opens to the same distance as last time and nothing is clickable. I can’t scroll my hobbit to move at all, cannot click on the maps or achievements. The whole thing is stuck.. glitched… and unusable. Deleted and redownloaded with no change :( So so sad because it was amazing up until now! Stuck at Riverdale.Version: 1.7

Not worth itIt only counts 1 mile a day unless you pay.Version: 1.7

Worse since updatePlease fix, it doesn’t show any of my friends progress.Version: 2.0.2

Non-moving avatarMy avatar has barely moved after walking more than 20 miles. This started at mile 861 in the Golden Wood. I emailed for help, and was told that there were supposed to be “more graphics and events” in that area, and that the avatar would move slowly for a little while. I emailed again asking how long that would take and haven’t heard back. My miles are being tracked, but it’s annoying that I’m barely moving anywhere on the map. I also don’t understand how an avatar’s movement has anything to do with missing graphics and events, unless that part of the game is just not mapped. I just want my avatar to move at a normal pace again..Version: 1.7

Works only sometimesThe app is fun but it only works sometimes, doesn’t sync all steps and only works occasionally now. I’d wait till they upgrade or update their system..Version: 2.0.4

Needs you to payThe idea is great. Whilst I understand time and effort has gone into this, it could still be free and fun. Without paying, you are limited to 1.5km per day. At the start, you choose someone to sort of race against. Even if you choose the slowest walker Hairy Potter, he will still travel further than you unless you pay. I’d have been more willing to pay if it delivered more. Such as a story etc. Hence why I believe this simple app shouldn’t have a price..Version: 1.7

Fun game, could be improvedThis is a good little game to help motivate you to get the steps in. I paid for the upgrade to get the full features. There needs to be an increment between the normal and fast challengers - Mr Underhill is crazy fast and would be impossible for most people to beat, but the “normal” challengers aren’t any challenge at all for a person doing 10k steps a day (which is a pretty average amount) The lack of challenge is making me interact with the game less..Version: 1.6

Interesting idea bad executionPoor to have a ‘race’ option that is impossible for to win (against even the ‘slowest’ competitor) unless you pay for the premium access. Lame..Version: 1.4

Love the idea but ...The idea and story of this app are excellent and really adds a bit more fun to walking. However, I have been using this app less than a week and already I have had 2 days which are WILDLY inaccurate. My normal daily distance is about 5.5 miles. So far it has been pretty accurate but one day this week somehow recorded 28 miles and as I write this it is only 7am and the app is logging nearly 9 miles already (I have only walked 4 miles). These inaccurate recording cannot be edited or changed (that I can find) so now it does really deal like my journey any longer. I will likely uninstall and see if I can get a refund..Version: 1.2.2

Fun but not accurateI love this game however even after paying for premium, it still does not accurately track my kms or retrieve “old data”.Version: 1.7

Cute idea but don’t think it’s freeThere’s loads about this app and the idea I like, but it is not free. I think it’s kind of misleading because what you get for free is a trial version that limits you to a mile a day (even if you aren’t hiking your step count will most likely be higher than this). I think the app may actually be worth the money, but I wish that was clearer from the outset. To get any real use out of the app, you will most likely need to pay for the full version..Version: 1.7

Meh could be betterDosent count steps like the other middle earth themed walking app and only 1500 steps a day is silly with out paying.Version: 1.2.3

Cool idea, butAre we just going to pretend the app icon is not a direct copy of the Kindle app?.Version: 1.7

GoodI’m loving this app so much except the fact that you have to pay $5 to get over 1500m. I think that this would be way more enjoyable if it was free. Then more people would set higher and higher goals for each day..Version: 1.7

1.5km Cap Takes Away the FunI love the concept of this app; helps motivate you to walk and allowing you to connect with an amazing fantasy world. However, the app only allows you to walk 1.5 km a day, if you want to walk further than that you have to pay $5 which is a rip off. You should be able to see how quickly you can get to Mount Doom without having any limit placed on you. I would be way further than I am. Fix this and I’ll redownload..Version: 1.3

Features hidden behind a new paywallI loved this app, but it seems there was an update and they hidden some features previously included with the purchase behind a subscription. Honestly, this is such a rip off, Ive been on this journey for a while and in tracking progress with my friends which is half the fun, and with no warning this feature gets taken away and I’m to pay monthly? It might make sense for new customers, however, I have already made a purchase for something that has now been gutted and I’m getting half of what I paid for. Disappointing...Version: 2.0.4

ChangesWould like for those who already paid for the app to get the sharing subscription automatically as a loyalty subscriber. When I got this app I was hoping you could share with family and friends but you couldn’t. But I still paid for it because it was a cool concept. Hoping you upgrade already paid subscribers for free..Version: 2.0.2

Very motivatingLike to see is for data from my Fitbit to be transferred to the program instead of having to go through apple health. Just one more reason not to purchase another apple phone I guess..Version: 1.2.2

It’s an ok app but has the potential to be betterI would like the option to share with friends and see their progress on the map. That way you are versing friends and it would be more motivating. Also the free version should have at least 4000 steps instead of 1500 as the average step per day for someone is much higher..Version: 1.7

Cute idea but disappointed on the daily limitI found this idea amazing and so cute when I’ve discovered it, LOTR is one of my favourite things ever, so I was so thrilled when I downloaded it. But I find ridiculous the fact that you have to buy the premium version to keep track of all the steps in a day. The other day I’ve put feet outside the house and after 15 minutes I’ve reached my daily free limit, it was really NOTHING. And I wfh so I don’t even walk that much during the day. Not sure why I should pay for something that at the end of the day just read the steps from my health app 🤷🏻‍♀️.Version: 1.3

Really cool premiseReally cool idea. But putting a paywall at 1500m leaves me not enjoying it. I think a paywall at 5000m would be a better fit. I understand that app developers should be paid accurately for their work, but with amount of clout this is getting to put a paywall at 1500m is strange..Version: 1.3

Great idea, but needs more social featuresMy friends and I all downloaded this app last week and, being fans of LOTR, immediately upgraded to the premium version. We assumed that there’d be a feature that allows you to track your progress against your friends (similar to NRC, Strava, etc). Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be the case. A shame, because otherwise this is a brilliant concept. Hope to see this feature coming down the pipeline in the not too distant future..Version: 1.3

Wow but slowing down.I still really like this app and I will continue to use it. But I do wonder why the further you get into the journey the less distance you seem to cover with your real life steps. For instance it amazes me that somewhere in middle earth there’s a bush that’s a quarter of a mile wide.I realize that there’s only so much programmers can do, I just get frustrated that I only cover about an inch of ground in the app after walking 5 miles in real life. After the first couple miles at the beginning of the journey 1 inch was was equal about a mile in real life. That made sense and i felt rewarded as I watched my hobbit move along with me. Now i walk a couple miles and he has barely moved. Like I said, I still like the app and I am likely to still use it, but it’s less fun than it was now that I’ve passed Bree. *Addition* I have been about an milimeter away from Weathertop for a month now. My avatar doesn’t appear to have moved at all for some days despite having walked several miles. I’m was excited about this app but I had to remove a star because it has become more discouraging than motivating..Version: 1.2.3

NopeTook me right back to the start after all my progress 😡.Version: 1.3
