BuyNothing for Negative User Reviews

Too many bugsThis app has too many issues, including long load, screens, inability to do simple features without paying, and constantly having to re-enter location or getting logged out..Version: 2.0.3

Charging a fee… to give things awayDisgusting..Version: 2.0.7

I didnt buy it.Neither should you. Not that you’d know if you did. The Official Phishing App. If you want to have your basic human rights removed, download now. Cos in one backup, your existence is theirs, to do with as they please. Except i knew nothing of the contractual sale of my data in it’s entirety..Version: 1.8.5

Won’t let me sign inI love the purpose of the app and have enjoyed buy nothing-ing with those in my community. But man is this app rough. As of today, I can’t log in. It is in a cycle of telling me the app isn’t updated, but when I click the button to update it just brings me back to the log in page again..Version: 2.0.3

Great concept poor executionReally really like the buy nothing concepts but this app is so glitchy, you cannot click on a post and then get back to the main feed without restarting the app.Version: 1.8.1

They ruined itIt used to be buggy but could deal because it was free and volunteer based. Since they started charging freemiums they have added some horrible “features” (e.g. global posts, graritudes, raves) that have rendered it into some janky self help/not so subtle ads or self promotion platform. I so wanted this to be the way forward from FB but this is awful. Pity they didn’t ask the users what they need /want instead of adding what appears to be weird pet projects that have zero to do with buying nothing and hyperlocal giving..Version: 2.0.6

Can’t Reset PasswordCan someone please help me reset my password? Every time I get a link to reset, I try to open it and the app opens and doesn’t give me the option to reset. Update: a year later and still can’t log in. App is pretty much unusable one you forget your password.Version: 2.0.3

Broken appAt this time the app appears to be broken, I downloaded it and it won’t get past the first part where it tells me what the app is, oh well I love the idea of it.Version: 2.0.3

You’re put in a WaitList whatever that meansAfter I unhappily signed in with a linked account, the only thing I achieved was to be put on a “Wait list.” I did not even determine which neighborhood group I wanted to join, so it’s not a “waiting to be verified and admitted into the group” situation. What in the world am I put on a wait list for? Also, each group should have more than one admin. The group in my neighborhood has only one admin who is no longer active on Facebook so no new members can be admitted. I tried sending her a message, but it’s not showing as delivered so she likely does not use the app. The members are not shown and cannot not be contacted. I tried reaching out to Buy Nothing only to sent back automatic general response to look into FAQs. This was my last resort... to get into the group through the app, but it’s looking pretty bleak right now..Version: 1.1.1

Great concept, still buggyI love that there is a buy nothing app. My local but nothing group is one of the few reasons I keep my Facebook account alive and I’m trying to move away from that platform as much as possible. Unfortunately there are significant bugs. If I click in to a post to see the comments usually the app freezes and I have to force quit to get out of that screen and continue browsing. I also agree with other reviews the number of times you’re prompted to and key features (like saving/bookmarking a post) locked behind becoming a paid “sustaining member” does feel a little contrary to the projects mission. I absolutely understand there are costs associated with software, but for $50/year one would expect a great functioning professionally developed software, not a buggy volunteer project. I have high hopes for the future of this app, but unfortunately adoption in my area is not as great as in our active Facebook groups. I don’t think adoption will be quite what it needs to be until a few more improvements are made. I also feel like it had a bit less of a community feel than the Facebook groups. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but I think it may be the fact that rather than defining a neighborhood/community it’s just a radius from your location. This feels more like posting a transaction (give/ask) on a smaller Craigslist than a neighborhood group focused on giving. It also could just be the particular group I’m in vs the few app users, maybe this will change..Version: 2.0.2

Great concept, terrible appBarely works. Deleted after a few months..Version: 2.0.7

Didn’t workThe circle just kept turning and turning and nothing ever came up. I tried it at home and work in case was a connection issue but it never loaded..Version: 2.0.2

Activation code doesn’t activateAnd no way of checking in with you about it except on here. I’m just clicking the ‘activate’ button over and over with no response. Please advise..Version: 1.3.2

Can’t loginGreat idea But so often I go to log in with my Apple ID and it takes a long time with the green swirling dots, then nothing happens..Version: 1.8.5

Great app idea but could use improvementsAside from the glitches and bugs, it would be great if there was a notification system. this makes it easier to communicate with others, and pick up to give items away..Version: 2.0.3

Consistently having problems logging inIt’s ridiculous. Got an app in which no $ is involved, I keep being informed that I have the wrong password even though it’s saved on my phone. Frustrating.Version: 2.0.1

It's trash nowThis used to be a great place to share with my community and super useful to get rid of stuff or find some cool things. But the new updates makes the app horrible to use. First they added those weird global messages, irrelevant corporate nonsense, to clog up my feed. I scrolled past a dozen of those until I saw a real post. Now it's even worse. They apparently increased the radius of posts that you get shown, with places that would take me 3 hours to get to. And they want to see $50 to change it back to normal. Before this it would take a while until you get some new posts but it was so much better than all these useless posts. I don't even want to see where they'll take it from here. I'll be on craigslist instead, where I can see posts that are relevant to me at all..Version: 2.0.4

Buy Nothing appI want to love the app, but it is really difficult to navigate and confusing. I love my Buy Nothing group on Facebook and I’d love to access my group through an app, but this app doesn’t connect me to my group. The app takes away all the things I enjoy and are special to my neighborhood Buy Nothing. No longer a group of neighbors, it’s very impersonal. There seems to be no oversight of what is posted, saw advertisements for garage sales/businesses, which is not allowed in my local Buy Nothing group. Very little activity and no posts of gratitude. This app seems to have really diluted the core foundations of Buy Nothing, and what I enjoy of my group. I wouldn’t recommend the app and will delete it from my phone. Seems like a bad craig’s list. I’ll continue accessing my buy nothing group from FB and wouldn’t recommend the app. I could get behind the app if it was a way to access what is happening in my local group, but this seems like it is a completely separate thing. I question if this app is a knock off of the original FB groups. Plus, all over the app are links to financially support buy nothing? A group where you “buy nothing” and everything is free wants you to buy to support them? Seems like a scam..Version: 1.8.1

Worked better before with more freedomI don’t like the update. I can’t easily change location without becoming a sustaining member. Goes against the buy nothing philosophy, doesn’t it? BUY NOTHING EXCEPT MY APP!.Version: 2.0.1

SettingsSettings should have the option to display distances in km instead of miles considering that more than 95% of the world uses metric. Only 3 countries that are stuck on imperial are Liberia, Myanmar & The U.S..Version: 2.0.2

Great ideaI would subscribe/pay to/for the app, if it got better reviews! :).Version: 2.0.2

Delete the appHow do I get this app OFF my phone.Version: 2.0.7

Almost too buggy to use nowI love the idea of this app and I’ve gotten so many good finds from my community. The bugs before were annoying but bearable but now with the updates and new features the developers have hindered key app features like messaging!! I don’t get any notifications of messages now. The app is so unreliable it hinders the whole process. And don’t even get me started on these passive aggressive “community leaders” commenting on every post saying “that’s not how we do things in buy nothing land”. No one in our community has had issues with anything excepts flakes and you’re creating problems out of nothing. This app could be so great if it could organize better and fix the bugs before rolling out new features..Version: 2.0.2

No longer playing the gameI have used this app occasionally because it has a wider spread than my neighbor BN, and I’ve even recommended it to people in my local group as a way to find certain things. The creator and organizer of this group, however, has recently insisted that prayer should be a part of the platform and refuses to hear how that may impact others. Any dissent is erased and then she sites the BN “rules”, as if those are somehow truths that cannot be contradicted. Apart from the fact that this app is super glitchy and they ask for money (in a “buy nothing community!) to keep it running, I’m not interested in joining someone’s church group when I’m just looking to share items I no longer need/want. Going back to my local group and donation to thrift stores. ✌️.Version: 2.0.2

UnreliableThis has been so frustrating to use and observe. There’s a community member clearly distressed and others eager to help but probably due to bugs with notifications or private messaging (or both), they’re not connecting. The experience has so many seams showing and so many features missing that groups patched onto Facebook like giving libraries. Also angry with the Sustaining Members model: pay money for features to make the app usable?? I volunteer with and observe non-profits that do sponsorships and build better tech than this, the sustainability model here is a choice..Version: 2.0.2

TerribileThis app is terrible! It never loads correctly. Messages and comments don’t load. I have to close out the app every time. I don’t have Facebook so this is the only option. I hate it..Version: 2.0.5

Don’t botherDon’t waste time downloading this. No one is using it. If you’re familiar with the Facebook groups, this app makes it about the “stuff”, not the people. There’s nothing neighborly about it. This app is total garbage..Version: 1.3.1

Great concept; very buggySimple features freeze and crash the app so as to make it unusable. At this point, the only thing I can do is scroll the homepage..Version: 2.0.6

Miserable UIUnfortunately, the new city I moved to has discontinued its Facebook group completely and transitioned to being app-only. However. The app is so buggy, once I open a post, I cannot even return to the main feed and the app essentially freezes. Also, there is no filter for local vs all/global posts and most of my feed is global posts, which I cannot feasibly coordinate a pickup with. Please add a filter for local vs. all and PLEASE fix the bugginess! App is unusable..Version: 2.0.6

Notifications :(I’ve signed up with an email, and I have given the app permission to do notifications. I do not receive notifications by either method. This means I have to have the app open and watching in order to give things away. I happen to be giving something away that turns out to be popular. Not having notifications is making it difficult to have timely interactions with potential receivers. I really, REALLY like the concept so I won’t delete the app but I’ll wait to try out the next revision before I give something away again. thanks to the volunteer developers. I’ll re-review when this is fixed..Version: 2.0.2

Needs badgesThis app desperately needs badges so I know when there has been activity on posts; I am constantly missing opportunities because of this, it’s tedious. Also they need to be more insistent when signing up that people use their real names instead of adjective animals..Version: 2.0.3

Unusable nowI thought the app was cool but now it is unusable at least without paying.Version: 2.0.5

Great concept, iffy appIn the radius I’ve set, I see a good balance of gifts, asks, and gratitude posts, and I almost never see inappropriate posts. I don’t know that it’s the right app for you if you’re looking to make deep friendships, per se; every time I’ve gifted something I’ve just handed it off and said “have a good day” without any further conversation (but that works for me!). My only gripe is with the app itself. Sometimes when you open it, it acts as though you need to sign back in, but if you wait 5-10 seconds it figures itself out and remembers that you’re already signed in. I don’t like that if someone has made a post with multiple photos, if you accidentally scroll past the last one, the app expands the photo to full screen which can take a bit to load. The notification and message panels are extremely slow to respond. Opening a notification, marking it as read, and opening a message each take 3-5 seconds—which in the grand scheme of things is short, but in comparison to all modern apps… It’s also frustrating that when you are waiting for the app to load, there’s no indication that you’ve made any action (i.e. no spinning loading indicator). When you first start using the app you might assume that it’s not responding at all to your taps, but after a few uses you just know to wait a bit after every tap. Finally, as other users have noted, it’s counterintuitive that my sent messages are on the left side of the conversation rather than the right..Version: 1.8.5

Great Idea, horrible appI love buy nothing, it's a great initiative. but this app is one of the worst I've ever used, it barely functions. please fix.Version: 1.8.5

Broken on iOS12.5.7Hello there, this app use to work fine but after that 2.0 version it broke. It no longer works on iphone 6plus and ipad running iOS12.5.7 I should had not updated the app as it was working before hand. Help! Thanks!!!.Version: 2.0.1

Unable to sign up on an ipadI just downloaded the app on my ipad. It prompts me for steps 1-3 to create my account (out of 4 steps) but after briefly (maybe 1/10th of a second) of displaying a request to enter what I think is my date of birth, it jumps to the final submit screen and won’t let me do that because it is missing information that I can’t fill in. This is simply poor app testing before it was released - how did this get missed during development?.Version: 2.0.3

Good but very slow and buggyOn the pro side: overall It’s a good app and great concept. I like that it offers a choice of how local you want to go. This is a nice difference from the Facebook version - which can get a little (class/etc) segregated and problematic in this regard. And the fact that you can avoid the evil data vampire/ misinformation monstrosity that is Facebook is great in itself. For the most part my interactions with folks on the app have been lovely. Now for the cons: this app is BUGGY and SLOW. I’ve been refreshing over the course of about 6 hours today and it still won’t update. (The “newest” post displayed is from 11 hours ago) It disappears messages that I send or receive, or they’ll go to the wrong member, or appear under the wrong person’s name in my inbox…It also won’t let you edit a post after posting it.. The app definitely feels more impersonal and less community oriented than the FB version. There seems to be no moderation so sometimes people get snarky, or post things that are not BN related — or even counter to the mission. And did I mention it is SLOW. Cmon developers you can do better than this ..Version: 1.8.1

Still waiting for approval. I even paid the $49 to have accessStill waiting for acceptance into Buy Nothing group. Please advise.Version: 2.0.2

No sense of communityI want to like this app because I hate having to use a social media platform to access my group, but I think this app ruins the whole concept. It uses my address for a location but then just dumps me in a pool of people with no sense of what community is being served. I see listings for people in other cities which completely ruins the “hyper local” aspect of the Buy Nothing Project. It also destroys the community I’ve been in for years because I’m no longer connecting with the same people. There’s also as far as I can tell no local moderation so the people who have been assisting my community for years are now out of the loop. I would much prefer if giving my address allowed me to select a community to join so I and my whole group could locate each other again in the app. I also wish that the same local community moderators could be in place in my group so we could maintain a sense of continuity, but also preserve the community we’ve built under their leadership. As it stands now, this app feels like just another place to dump free stuff. I don’t want to just get rid of stuff. I want to feel like I am supporting my community by giving items to people I know in my community and reducing waste in my community. Giving away stuff to some random person who doesn’t live in the same community doesn’t satisfy the core tenets of the Buy Nothing Project..Version: 1.7

Wonderful idea. But like a car with no engine!I have been attempting for months now, to download this app. First thing I discover is that my old iphone 6+ is incapable of downloading the BuyNothing app... Ive bought a refurbished iphone xr. I still can't get the app to work. Downloaded. Endless attempts to receive a link for forgotten password to my email address, nothing is ever sent to me. I try to access via Facebook sign-in option (which I do not like doing). I go to a big green 'continue' button.... having literally pressed it fifteen times: No response, nothing, won't go 'back' won't go forward. NOTHING 😕 It has been frustrating. Who do we contact for help? Why is this still a 'one star' app? If 'apps' are the means by which this project needs to be powered.... we are being given a car with no engine! Ive got stuff piled up, I'm in an unfamiliar community... this would have been a great solution. How can we be expected to share an app... with friends, family, loved ones, strangers.... when it has a one star rating????? Frustrated, and sad..Version: 1.7

DisappointingDifficult to use, as it just spins. I see nothing...so can't "buy nothing"..Version: 2.0.3

Cant log inI trued to log in through google, selected my profile, and then nothing happened. Tried with facebook and apple, same thing, it just does not log in. I closed the app, reset phone, nothing. Tried to log in through email, said it already existed as it’s the same as the google one. Reset my password, which worked, I used it and it said it was invalid..Version: 1.8.1

Very disappointed, deleting the appI’ve gotten rid of several things using the app (yay!) and acquired a few things as well. However, the app has so many issues at this point it’s become unusable: -Notifications aren’t delivered in a timely manner when someone responds to a post or DM’s you. I’ve missed out on stuff because of this. -There’s no way to sort or “favorite” posts without paying a subscription fee making it difficult to keep track of items you’re interested in. (Not everyone can afford the subscription price; it’s kind of steep for a “frugal” app.) -Every time the app updates it logs me out. Trying to log back in after the most recent update, I’m getting an error message stating “Invalid login or password” despite using my saved log in information. After creating accounts 3 times due to this issues, I’m done. App is deleted..Version: 2.0.4
