✓ Inexcusable design errors, but otherwise a nice gameThe Pokémon TCG itself is awesome, but there are issues not even excusable for a closed beta, demonstrating a poor direction for the game. - The deck builder is a huge downgrade from PTCGO, lacking core features like a quick look into evolutionary relationships. - The characters themselves look alright, but the animations look so narcissistic (like the irritating victory animation) that I wish they didn’t exist at all. I’m worried they’re going to remain since they’re already in here now. - Viewing your hand is a mess on a portrait orientated screen. Simply put, the player needs to see every card in hand **simultaneously**, otherwise mistakes get made. I don’t care what sacrifices need to be made to get the visual space for this, it’s a requirement. On the positive side, at least I can play the Pokémon TCG on iOS now. ✓ UnfinishedThe game very much feels like a first draft. It’s clunky, you have to be very precise with actions. The cards look very low quality on the game board. It’s riddled with gameplay glitches. The attacks don’t hit with any interesting animation. Seeing the detail for the attached cards feels like too many clicks. Maybe spend a little less time on designing outfits for avatars and act on the enormous amount of feedback that has already been received. ✓ Phone gets extremely hot when playingI like the new features and methods of collecting currency that have been added, I like that it’s now available for phones as well. One thing I’ve noticed though is that my phone gets REALLY hot when playing this game and no other game makes my phone get this hot. My battery also drains like crazy. ✓ Poor But PromisingI had played the online TCG quite a bit before and had a very large library of cards. With that shutting down in favour of this game, they offered to port your cards over, but only select newer expansions, then give in game currency for cards not ported. It’s almost not worth it at all. That said, the game make up is nice on mobile and plays very well. It’s a fun mobile card game and if it’s supported, it could go really well with the physical version going forward. IF they fix the hardware demands. Playing this game makes my new iPhone 12 heat up like crazy. I’ve never had a program do that to a device before, not like this. ✓ Downgrade from old TCG app.I downloaded this new version of Pokémon TCG online despite reading the reviews thinking they were just outliers. I should have paid more attention to the low App Store rating and reviews. This new app is horrible for the following reasons: • Drained my iPhone 12 Pro Max after 3 battles • Cards have low resolution are all pixelated • Layout/HUD are terrible and not ergonomic • Phone runs red hot when playing • Matchmaking is terrible • Hard to read what cards do and can’t even see your full hand on screen, you have to “scroll” through your cards to try and guess what you have… I deeply regret merging my Pokémon TCG account to this new app and I’m very sad the old version will be permanently closed soon leaving only this downgrade as the only option….Konan__Version: 1.5.0

✓ No more tournaments. Ranked meta screwed. Battlepass sluggish.There’s no way to generate enough points to unlock the battlepass aside from doing daily quests that flip every 10 hours. It takes about 600 crystals and the reward increments come in waves of 2 60 crystal rewards. Which means the battle pass premium unlocks at a rate of about 6 days assuming you complete the quests everyday and assuming a Crystal (purple) is rewarded in each quest. This wouldn’t be a problem. But at Greninja ranked match que…you get stuck facing the same decks over and over. Lugia Starpower decks. Over and over and over and over. Like it’s literally on repeat. It’s making the battlepass grind BORING. Why? Because there aren’t any events implemented. No more tournaments to offset the grind. No more trade markets to explore options and fill weak spots. Instead it’s crafting that takes forever to grind. So your stuck having to face OP decks with little way of replenishment. Uninstalled for this reason but look forward to coming back when it’s fixed. Old review Raihan Glitched The card Raihan doesn’t work properly. It says that it can only be played when a Pokémon you control was knocked out during your opponents last turn. I’ve tested it in a couple games and it still doesn’t allow me to play the card after my Pokémon is defeated. It leaves me with an unusable supporter and I end up losing those matches for it. ✓ Fun Game — But Only When It WorksThere are way too many game BREAKING bugs in this game. Abilities do not work properly like described, sometimes when you play a card the game freezes, and other times the game just randomly stops working in the middle of a match for no apparent reason. Often times there is absolutely nothing you can do but take a big L no matter how far in the lead you are. If it wasn’t so incredibly buggy, I’d give this game a much higher rating. Such a shame. ✓ Incredibly Boring!I grew up playing the physical and Game Boy Color version and I can honestly say this LIVE version is the absolute worst. The UI is incredibly bareboned, the load time is long, gameplay is bland, the avatars are ugly, and everything else is terrible. This app feels like it was made by recent graduates who have never made a game ever in their life. I don’t understand why the developers can’t learn a thing or two about making a digital card game from Hearthstone and MTG Arena. The template is there so just use it. Why reinvent the wheel? When watching a video on the history of PTCGO, Live reminds me of their browser game stage. It is clunky. It is slow. It is unattractive to the eye. It is full of game altering/breaking bugs. Matchmaking? Seems nonexistent half the time when I’m waiting 20+ minutes to be paired. What are your devs doing? Who even are they? Have they not played a digital card game client in the current market? It’s embarrassing. If it’s not the devs, who is it making the final decisions? Do they have any idea what a digital card game client needs? You want more people to play the game. You want content creators to push this client. You want competitive players to be able to test for upcoming (overpriced) events. No one wants to play it, content creators are legitimately concerned for their future, and competitive players are considering just going to webcam games to practice. Is this 2008 or something? ✓ DisappointingNot what i was expecting. There are a few pros, the gameplay is engaging and the animations are cool. That being said the whole app is really slow in loading different screens. Even just starting the app up can take minutes. The support people make it even more frustrating to deal with! I lost most of my collection because when I transferred my account over almost things are not supported so there goes many years of collecting codes off purchased items that are no longer supported so much for supporting loyal Pokémon customers. Also this new app doesn’t seem to support theme decks just premade decks I have no interest in using. Sure you can make a deck but like stated before all of my cards I’ve been collecting are now gone so how am I supposed to make a deck now? Not to mention the new layout for game play is much worse more tapping and actions are required to make simple in game moves. There seems to be no training or offline mode for my kids when they want to play but I don’t want them playing the online modes. ✓ Huge battery drainer and multiple bugsPlaying the game drains my battery really quickly and gets my phone really hot. (iPhone 13 pro got it this year) so that is quite a concern given it is a card game. Anytime I customize my characters glasses they colour changes after i set it over and over again. Each time you then have to wait minutes for it to “load resources” .. and then when you set up your character each item takes ages to load. So what was the loading thing for then? And when you FINALLY hit PLAY after all that - the app just crashes. Every time. Tried restarting. No change. I don’t know how this app was developed, but clearly it was developed in a framework that has no regard for the user experience. ✓ This app needs a lot of work.I was hopeful about the release of tcg live on the smartphone but unfortunately it is terribly disappointing. At the base level, the game is fun and the same gameplay I enjoyed from pokemon tcg online. However there is a lot more clicking of buttons, scrolling, and squinting at small text that makes the game unappealing. Much of this is due to the portrait style gameplay. The landscape screen style of tcg online was much cleaner and less button pressing was necessary. The larger issue however is that my iphone 13 pro got really hot and began to burn the back of my finger near after only 10 minutes of playing in a temperature controlled room. I have never experienced that while playing any game/app on this phone before. Also I am so sad that my custom decks didn’t transfer over from tcg online to tcg live. The problem really comes down to the bugs not being fixed quickly enough or properly, and by the time the next set of cards comes out every three months, new bugs arrive with it. It’s a never ending vicious cycle which they can’t keep up with. Pity as it could be a lot more fun if it worked properly. Also, because of the bugs, it’s impossible to win in the higher levels. No trading cards, no verses bot matches, no tournaments and to top it off an annoying new three currency system. ✓ A complete downgradeThe title says it all it’s a compleat downgrade from online. Here is a list of some of the things they made worse: the graphics are worse than the game made 10 years before, the UI is now lifelessly generic, there is no trading in a TRADING card game, packs only have 5 cards, there is no collection you have to go to the deck editor to look at your cards, you can only have 4 of any card and you can’t keep packs, there will be no hgss card support, there is no proper theme deck support any theme deck is just made as a normal deck, there is no friend system, you can only buy sword and shield packs nothing older, you can’t see what deck your opponent was using after the game, anything before swsh is only allowed in casual expanded, the game loads cards so slowly that when you are shown a card there’s a chance that it won’t have loaded before it’s moved. Those are just the blatant downgrades that I can remember. I haven’t even complained about the issues with the few new systems like the one minute inactivity timer that doesn’t give you enough time to read your opponents cards or make a strategy..Ammazing gameVersion: 1.3.2

✓ Downgrade over previous gameWhile the phone support is a good addition the game itself feels like a downgrade from the previous Pokémon TCG app. The core game is (as expected) the same but appears to be missing some of the features that made to old game fun such as the regular challenges and rewards. I also don’t understand the need for multiple currencies. Given it’s still quite a new release I expect many of the crashes will be fixed over time and I’m sure there will be other improvements but overall it feels like this was released too early, sadly now my data is migrated I don’t think I can go back to the old TCG game so will just need to hope things improve fast..ClaybegVersion: 1.3.2

✓ Do not recommendI migrate my tcg live account with my tcg online account thinking it will be ok but once I do that I can’t access my online anymore. The online is better and easier to use. I also redeemed a whole bunch of code card and had to open them all on tcg live and when I opened them I clicked collect all and got barely any cards. On the iPad you are forced to play in portrait like you would on phone which wastes the available screen space available on an iPad. ✓ Fingers crossed there are MANY improvements on the way…I loved the old app. It was very easy to use, graphically pleasing, and functional. Was it a bummer I couldn’t play on my phone? I guess? Now gameplay is a bit clunkier, you can’t play in landscape mode on iPad, and the overall appearance has taken a huge downgrade. I suppose it is still in the “beta stage”, but I wish I hadn’t migrated my user over to this incomplete and mediocre version. User be warned. The card crafting mechanic is interesting, but a pain to get enough materials. ALSO, what is the deal with making packs 5 cards now…? ✓ Can rarely get a match to even startI was a big fan of the old trading card game app which I never had any problems with. This app has gotten worse with the newest update. Before, I could rarely finish a match without it crashing. On my iPad updated to the newest version of iOS and the app I can rarely even start a game without it crashing - very disappointing! ✓ Hot, Hot, Hot!I played through the tutorial skipping most of the practice battles. By that point I knew this game was not for me. Even tho I played and enjoyed the previous TCG app. Why, you might ask, do I hate this app? For one reason and one reason only. My device is a base model iPhone 13 with plenty of space on it. Out of approximately 4 times I have opened this app it overheated my device every time. So hot in fact I had to change how I was holding the device. Its not over time or anything either. It started to get noticeably warm on the games main menu. If you look past the heating issue then the game is fine. Lacking a solo mode the previous TCG app had is a big missed opportunity tho. Plus they only let you import so many of each card from the previous tcg app. Witch I assume was for balance and system/menu/app changes. It might just be me but, I could not find a way to just look at my digital collection. On the plus side the had and cards are ez to read when you select them. Creating a deck was fine as well. What I expect from a long term tcg. They even have a competitive and casual play style to select before matching up with others. ✓ AbysmalThis Live version is completely abysmal in my eyes. The controls aren’t very intuitive at all. They’ve gotten rid of the AI battles, which I used to enjoy if I didn’t want to heavily commit to a person battle. You can no longer purchase decks, again, which I loved doing as it gave me something to work towards. Now, you have to collect credits that will unlock you a SINGLE card. No AI fights means you have to play against a human, who a lot of whom I have come across have some super strong, over the top combo decks. I also find the speed of things WAAAAY too high. I don’t even get a chance rid them before we’re back to the playing field and then I have to go through the cards to figure what has been played, what the ability/affect of the card is. One thing that really p****s me off is that when logging into TCGLive for the first time it stated that card process and collection from a certain point onwards would be migrated over. ✓ Why is this so bad?Pokémon has been developing video games for decades and has had years working on PTCGO, successfully too. So how is this app so terribly made? How? Visually, I’m not bothered by the fact that it looks nothing like you’re actually playing a tabletop card game, but I have many issues with the many visual bugs and terrible UI. On top of this, it’s greatly under-developed in comparison to its predecessor. “Expanded” is arguably not even a feature, you can’t scan online codes on York phone and if you had a collection of older cards on PTCGO, you will NOT keep them through transferring. ✓ Vertical only on iPad?At first I wasn’t too fond of this new version of ptcgo, but it’s been slowly growing on me and I’m sure it will get better with time. Pokémon tcgo had plenty of flaws, but many good points. Deck building and copying deck lists was 100x easier and intuitive compared to Pokemon Live. This is by far the part that will need the biggest and most complete overhaul. The game plays like it should (bugs aside) on live but is let down by only being portrait not landscape, and all the issues that portrait causes like not being able to see your whole hand, Card graphics on the bench are also terrible because of the restrictions. Copying lists from the Pokémon tcgo just doesn’t work even though it was promised that it would. ✓ Extremely BuggedDefinitely allows you to get the Pokémon TCG experience, except for one massive problem. It’s bugged. Not one bug, not small bugs, no it has several massive bugs. You want to climb ranked? Well guess what, you’re going to randomly be frozen out of your own turns, cards will randomly do things that they’re not supposed to, and the game will randomly prevent you from using cards or abilities that you can 100% use! Here’s an example I just experienced!!! I was playing an Urshifu V deck into a Garde ex deck, and what happened? On one of my most important turns the game completely froze me out of being able to do anything except hit end turn - so I was unable to evolve my Urshifu, attach my Single Strike Energy, or ANYTHING ELSE. ✓ So bad it’s SHOCKINGStay far away from this game. It’s the definition of style over substance. It looks much nicer then the original, but don’t be fooled, it’s a far worse app. The cards are low res and hard to read. Everything is squished together needlessly for some reason. The Pokémon on your bench only show their pictures, so there’s no way to get a sense of their attacks, weaknesses, resistances, and retreat costs without clicking on them. You have to scroll to look at your hand which is inefficient. You can’t read any of the item cards or buffs that a Pokémon has unless you tap on them and swipe to the appropriate card. The game melts your battery, you can’t easily assess your collection or read the attacks or stats, and it sets your device on fire. Above all, it’s unbalanced towards new players or those that simply don’t know how to build decks. In the original app, you could play in a promo deck latter that allowed players to fight on even footing for the same prizes as everyone else. Here you get no such thing. ✓ Not a great asset to collectors IRLIt’s a bit disappointing that CardDex was shut down in favour of Pokémon Live, when Pokémon Live does not do the job it needs to in order to replace CardDex. As a collector IRL it’s really important for me to be able to see set lists quickly, which is just not really feasible in Live because you have to go to make a deck first, and play around with the settings a bunch in order to bring up a tiny picture of the cards. Live is optimised for battling, which is great, it’s just a shame they took away the app that was absolutely phenomenal for collectors. Also a bit of a shame the app stops my music when I open it and there’s no way to turn that off. ✓ My phone keeps getting really hot!Hi development team! I recently bought a booster box of scarlet and violet base set. When redeeming the cards and opening the packs in the game client my phone got really hot to the point where I had to put my phone down to continue the pack opening. I am the type of person who uses their phones without the case bcos I like the better thermal management it provides. But I haven’t played a card game let alone a game which made my phone so unbearably hot where I had to put it down. My phone is the iPhone 14 Pro Max and maybe it doesn’t have the best thermal management among all the smartphones but it is no slouch as well. Please address this issue as I can’t even hold the phone when playing and some scenarios like when I play on the train home I have no where to put it except holding it with my hands. Really disappointed with how it is. There are probably more issues but I can’t even get to them bcos my phone is to hot to hold. I will sit and wait for several minutes watching the opponent do nothing, but when it comes to my turn if I don’t respond within seconds, my turn is auto ended. Tapping to view the card will also show me the card that was there previously as well. It had a well developed fan base and following, every single card ever used in a TCG tournament, friends list, cosmetic options along with just making your character more customizable, pack opening was way better, why do I only get 5 or 6 cards from a booster pack? We were also able to trade and buy cards we don’t already own which alone is a huge turn off (i’ve opened over 80 packs trying to get a single card to finish a deck) There is a cap to how many packs you can open per set, why is it so hard to log in, why can’t we scan codes via the official site instead of using a whole different website for it? In my opinion, the original tcg live was way better and should’ve just gotten some more touch ups to it can fit with their new 3D art style which Game Freak ever loves, it’s going to take a very long time for this game to even get close to the point the original was at, they definitely should’ve put way more thought into this, my favorite version of TCG to play is unlimited which they have yet to be able to implement since they haven’t been able to add all the sets. This then leaves you with a frozen game waiting out a timer that doesn’t even result with a win via opponent conceding (which it should give you after 15 seconds of no action). Especially with ranked content its nothing more than completely frustrating. Playing well and winning a match should not punish you for your opponents ability to abuse a flawed mechanic that allows someone to disconnect in the event of looming defeat. Don’t get me wrong the app suffices as a mobile pokemon tcg platform with the gameplay one would expect from a simple tcg game. But when your opponent can abuse an apps flaws to both waste your time and steal from you the rewards you should yield from winning performance, something needs to change. Having to drag cards precisely where they need to be on screen, instead of the app meeting you in the middle and making it more user friendly. At the start of a match, having to confirm that, yes I’m finished putting basic Pokémon on my bench, despite having no more basic Pokémon in my hand. Clicking on a card instantly fills the entire screen with the card you clicked on, obscuring what your opponent is actually doing. Overly designed avatars with 30 different designs of the same hat to choose from but no real options to diversify your character such as making them older/younger, fatter/thinner or taller/shorter. I like almost everything about it but there are a few pretty big issues to me. First and foremost, there is no way the coin flips are as random as they should be. Almost every time I play, there are streaks of it landing both head and tails, for multiple games in a row. The next biggest thing to me is the card shuffles. It has to be one of the most annoying things in the game because they are some of the worst shuffles I’ve ever seen. There will be many times, where all I pull is energy for a few rounds. There will be a few times where all you pull are tools/supports for a few rounds. There will also be rounds where you don’t pull a single Pokémon in your first hand, even though there are almost 20 in the whole deck and there’s no way you should at least pull one. I have lost quite a few rank points now because the game wouldn’t load completely, I couldn’t choose the card I intend to choose, and from games lagging a bit too long and I waste all my play time. ✓ Long Time PlayerThe game works decent on the iPad but still have many bugs. The game works very poorly on the phone. I have the newest iPhone 15 pro max. My 7 win streak I accumulated on the iPad ended due to a lose from the phone version being too buggy. After viewing the cards in my deck, the words on the cards stayed on the screen and I could no longer click on my battle card until time ran out. I tried a second game after reseting the app, hoping it was a fluke and it crashed again. I would not bother playing on a cell phone unless you want to get frustrated and loose due to system errors. ✓ Basic Visuals & UI Needs ImprovementI used to be able to read my cards without having to tap to zoom in (as opposed to seeing blurred, tiny text that REQUIRES you to zoom in order to read it). And the side-scroll for the cards in your hand doesn’t work with this “fast-paced” style. The tap and then confirming it for things like prize cards just made battles slower (as it was just tapping to pick a prize card in the older app). You also added “dragging” for discarding energy… which wasn’t in the older app and also makes the games annoyingly slow too. And as the cherry on top, I can’t tell who’s turn it is half the time (older game visually showed who’s turn it was in the middle of the screen in large text) and the UI for collecting pass rewards (or whatever it is) is so small on the lower left that it took me a bit to find it. This was just from playing one casual game, which felt like it was longer than it needed to be, and struggling to navigate with some of the tiny visual selections. ✓ Love Pokemon TCG, but this new app ain’t it.Its difficult to review this app without comparing it what it replaced, and currently it’s a fundamental downgrade, except for mobile support. The previous Pokemon app was dated, but it had a lovable charm, supported Apple devices well (iPad and macOS), and was impressive in how well it had been upkept since debuting almost a decade ago. This new replacement app adds mobile support, a battle pass and ranking systems which are mostly welcome additions, but is mostly empty of personality or charm. What is inexcusably bad is that the resolution of the entire experience is horribly low, with extremely jagged edges, unreadable text and limited resolutions for iPad and macOS. If you’re on mobile or iPad, then also look forward to no battery-life and holding a hot device in your hand, and for mobile. Also, the app will often crash if you swap it, or follow a link it provides, and mobile networking seems horrible. Selecting cards is laborious and slow, games feel like they take forever, and the entire UI, both in games and in menus, feels clunky and unintuitive. Recent bugs to do with ability-locking Pokémon have led to a handful of meta relevant cards receiving temporary bans, making PTCG Live an unsuitable environment for competitive players who are preparing for the North American International Championships which is in a few weeks, and the World Championships in a few months’ time. It is frankly embarrassing for Pokémon to shut down the previous client, Pokemon TCG Online, and leave us with an unfinished client that is severely lacking investment. It feels like the development team are so busy putting out fires and fixing temporary bugs that they aren’t given the resources to continue developing the game. However, after downloading it and making several attempts to get into the game for over an hour, I was repeatedly kicked out of the game and told to input my details over and over again. PTCGO absolutely needed to be replaced, it was ugly, and had no mobile app, but this is a terrible replacement. ✓ Good but needs workI have been a player of Pokémon TCGO for a while now and was excited to hear about the switch to TCG live. For the most part I have been enjoying the game as I always have. However there are a few things that I think TCGO got right that the new platform did wrong. As others have said the rewards system for progressing through levels, ranking, or battle pass are miserable. It takes a long time to move up a notch and the payout for that is so low. It used to be fairly easy to obtain coins for purchasing booster packs or deck boxes on TCGO. Another thing I’m disappointed about is the removal of premade deck boxes for purchase. I enjoyed playing quite a few of those. The switch to the new currency types is a bit confusing to me also. If there was even an option to purchase extra credits with Apple Pay, I’d consider that. Now I have to make a stop at the store and buy actual packs lol. The last criticism I have is that the cards during gameplay are often hard to read, cannot view whole card or affects, etc. I think there is a better way to arrange this. ✓ Game BreakingSo as a Pokémon fan of 20 Years I was super excited to see that TCG was finally coming to the phone as my PC just broke. Unfortunately though there has been one very upsetting bug and seems like for whatever reason with certain decks, cards and/or moves the game pretty much freezes… my opponents timer just goes down but theres never a switch of turns (usually after a minute of stalling, turns will auto switch). This is very annoying as it usually happens just about every other game and the only way to get out of this bug is to close app and by doing so the game registers you quitting in the middle of a ranked match and you loose points. Sometimes I can go maybe two games without this bug occurring but it seems like all major meta decks have this issue. With that being said this bug occurs a lot sometimes it will be back to back games sometimes its every other game and its very irritating when all you want to do is relax and play this game but you have a bug that forces you to close app every 20 minutes. ✓ A good start but, could use some improvementsI had been putting off trying Pokemon TCG Live because I didn’t want to lose access to playing Pokémon TCG Online, but after a specific date closer date was reviled I decided to give Live a shot. Pros: + You can play Pokémon TCG on almost any device not just an iPad + You can buy specific cards you need for a deck + It’s still 100% free to play Cons: - You can’t play in landscape mode on an iPad which makes playing the game uncomfortable on a bigger touch screen. - The game is vary flashy and has lots of moving animations. Specifically when a Pokémon is moved from the bench to the active position there is a graphical effect that is really fast! There’s also a weird rainbow-ish effect over rarer cards such as GX, EX, V-STAR, Full arts ect. Pokémon TCG Online had a similar effect, but it wasn’t as fast of an animation and wasn’t constantly moving. These effect in Pokémon TCG Live give me an almost immediate headache. Which is disappointing, because I really want to enjoy this game. If there was an option to, stop or at-least reduce these animations I don’t this it would be a problem because then I could just turn them off. Conclusion: It has potential to be a real good game and I know this game is till being worked on.
