Mastodon for Positive User Reviews

Better Twitter than Twitter (and Musk-free!)Like over 100,000 other former Twitter users, I joined Mastodon in April 2022 because I didn’t want to be on a social media platform owned and governed by the whims of an unkind billionaire. I did expect it to be sloppy and barren, but my expectations were laid to waste. Mastodon is crafted thoughtfully, with an eye toward building communities of people with similar interests run by people that you’re likely to know. And all of these little communities are connected to one another. Discovering people to follow takes a little more effort, but YOU are in control! YOU get to decide what server to join (or start your own) and each server can have its own rules, decide what other servers it will connect with, etc. freedom of speech is there, but so is a culture of kindness. I’m here to stay! Other Twitter refugees should come here. But remember you’re not sliding into some corporate wasteland site; you’re joining an individual person’s intentional community, so be a good neighbor!.Version: 1.4.0

A way to say goodbye to TwitterTwitter has suffered a hostile takeover. Mastdon will never suffer the same fate because it's federated and you can pick an instance to host your feed and move around between them..Version: 1.4.7

Issue posting imagesI love mastodon but lately I’ve been having issues posting images. I’ll do image descriptions and captions and then when I go to write my hashtags the app crashes completely and I lose all my progress. It’s frustrating because I do detailed image descriptions and I lose all of those every time this happens..Version: 1.4.3

How janky can it get?I like the Fediverse idea and ideals. That said, I've now had to reset my account or password on Matodon at least 3 times. This means at least once I totally lost all my followers and followings. Further, if one uses a very secure browser (I kind of thought Mastodon was at least a bit into privacy and security) then it's impossible to logon. COMMENT ON FEDIVERSE: Don't be foolish, the illiberal and corporate actors will, and probably are, use the Fediverse to further their anti democracy agendas and for greed. Be vigilant. Free speech requires responsibility..Version: 1.4.3

Website is better ✅Right now the ipad app is VERY limited with what you can do & see. Fewer categories to visit: ..home, local, ferderated, are not options here. Also the in-app notifications don’t work. While they’re working like crazy to accommodate the tidal wave of new users I think the app will probably have to wait. It’s not bad - it’s just lacking features that are on the website. I’m sure it will get better in time. * The website allows MUCH more access and control. * This is such a great social media source. But seriously: be patient!! It’s worth it. * Nice people. No algorithms. No advertisements. * You can switch instances (servers) at any time if you ever prefer another one. They all communicate with each other in the fediverse. * People are more than willing to help! - if you have questions put it out there, or search a hashtag ..like: #tips or #fediverse * Toot out an #introduction - tell people your interests - so people can find you. Remember. Patience!.Version: 1.4.5

Great AppThis has helped me to introduce family to mastodon without complications. Thanks for making this..Version: 1.4.0

Great Service!Like many, I left Twitter for Mastodon, the engagement on Mastodon is much better, most of the main people I followed on Twitter are on Mastodon mainly now. Once the third party apps get up to scratch the service will become much better!.Version: 1.4.9

Diamond in the RoughHaving no algorithm to spoon feed you posts and content is weird at first, with you having to actively follow and post to actually reach out to people, but it is far more better for it. It actual feels like SOCIAL media than being apart of someone’s “social experiment.” Bring decentralized means no one person controls or can be bought out by someone as there is a variety of servers and federated places to take advantage of. Compared to just one centralized place..Version: 1.4.9

So close yet so farUnfortunately it’s still missing some basic features like a notification button when following someone. This is basic functionality readily supported by the website and other clients, but oddly missing in this official app. Please add ASAP!!.Version: 2023.15

Loving the communityI am loving being a part of Mastodon. I can choose what I want to see and follow. The app is working quite nicely. Recommend to anyone that used to enjoy the way things used to be without algorithms..Version: 1.4.5

Nice alternative to cuckoo bird siteLoving this so far. I have a small number of followers and people I am following and find it less chaotic than the bird site. It is also missing the toxic far fight extremism that is been encouraged by the head cuckoo bird on that other site..Version: 1.4.7

The ArtacousticJust getting on the app. It runs really well and I like the format. I think this apps gonna be my new favourite things..Version: 1.4.5

Best social platform everFound infinite info, truth all inclusive, non-judgmental experience and not an advertising centre for corrupt propaganda by politicians. The people are just a source of HUMANITY so glad I made the switch to MASTODON renewed my faith in social media platforms..Version: 1.5

Mastodon vs Bird appGetting to really like Mastodon it’s kinda like Twitter but civilized.Version: 1.4.8

Seemed More Complicated Than It IsAt first it was a little tough finding a sever to join because I’m more accustomed to centralized platforms. But once I got in, looked up people and organizations I wanted to follow, and got down to the business everything fell into place. Moderation is way more flexible than it is on more centralized platforms, which ultimately makes it easier for more genuine voices to be heard. There are things to improve but over all there is a generally positive outlook..Version: 1.4.7

What social media should be likeFinally I am spending less time blocking trolls and more time engaging with people who are intelligent, interesting, thoughtful, empathetic and kind. I decided to transition to this platform because of the ego mad billionaire taking over the blue bird. It’s taking a moment to rebuild my network and learn how it works but it’s not that difficult. I hope that more people adopt..Version: 1.4.5

Fantastic App!This app brings together your traditional social media experience, similar to Twitter, or Facebook, but is also completely different in the way that and operates. It’s somewhat reminds me of discord, and Tumblr smashed together, which is a nice combination! It will take you a while to figure everything out, but once you do, the experience is better than Twitter’s simplistic interface, there is no need to pay for verification, and it isn’t as cluttered as Facebook is these days. Very nice app. I knew it was more popular at one point, and I hope it can get back to that at some point!.Version: 2023.11

Growing up and starting to walkThe absolutely best thing about this app is the edge to edge display. No wasted space. All media stretches and breaths. Very immersive. The drawback is that all the terminology is different than it’s own desktop app. And there are a few ambiguous features that don’t seem to correlate to anything, such as news? What about the Fediverse Timeline feed? What is called “Community” in the app, is Local Timeline on the web. The inconsistencies are a bit irritating, but the edge to edge window calms me back down. Would be nice to have “Delete and Edit” or “Edit” within the app..Version: 1.4.9

Almost there!Adding a reliable 1-click way to retrieve and display the most recent posts, and a way to hide the sidebar on iPad landscape would make it 5/5 IMHO..Version: 2023.13

Improves the On-Ramp to the FediverseThis app allows you to easily get connected around the world, to learn and collaborate with other users of the exponentially growing Fediverse social platform network. You can easily find a server via search, and review their descriptions. The e-mail verification process during the joining process is seamless. Once you join a server (instance), it is easy to find and explore accounts to follow. Those accounts might follow accounts on other servers, which allows you to explore additional communities. Your Fediverse experience can evolve with you deciding to eventually sign up to a different server that better suits your needs. You can find more complex features on your server and on the Fediverse in general when you use a web browser to access your account, but this app provides a perfectly comfortable user experience for those new to the Fediverse..Version: 1.0.0

So much.Love this opportunity, be patient as you pass through the gates of hell. You will have arrived at a place you will stay..Version: 1.4.9

Pretty good. Room for improvement. The central issues currently appear do be that a) Emoticons simply don’t load, under that option on new messages and b) Image uploads on new messages fail 9 times out of 10. Beyond that it’s a sturdy app which does a good job..Version: 1.4.7

Great app, but still not fully featuredI love the fediverse, and this app is a great addition to engagement. It it’s still not fully featured on both iPhone and iPad. There is a focus on the local timeline, which is nice, but browsing other feeds and tags is a sub-standard experience. And posting is hard-set rather than allowing the user to post at the character limit set by the particular instance. Great work so far, but a little more to do to stand out..Version: 2023.13

It’s an excellent appFor Mastodon there’s zero complaints. Credit to the app developers. It deserves 5 stars. The possible bug I mention below does not occur on mastodon, only Pixelfed. If you don’t use Pixelfed then ignore what is said below. —— The problem I’m having is with posting text to Pixelfed, which the app supports but there is a bug and I don’t know if it’s with the app or with Pixelfed. The possible bug is when I add text with the white space between paragraphs. After experimentation, I found the following results: - Just typing in text on iOS app, Win 10 and Mac OS X causes every new line to occur twice on both the app and web after saving. - Copy and paste text with CRLF causes every new line to occur twice on both the app and web after saving. - Copy and paste text with CR causes every new line to occur twice on the app and no new line on the web after saving. - Copy and paste text with LF causes every new line to occur twice on the app and a single new line on the web after saving. The results are the same on iOS, Win 10 and Mac OS X. Thanks for the long feedback and an excellent app..Version: 1.5.1

Nice changeReally enjoying Mastodon: it feels like I’m there at the Dawn of creation, complete with birthing pains and glitches. Seems to get better each day. I really appreciate the hosts who are working hard to help us. Goodbye, Twitter. Hello Mastodon. And I signed up at Patreon - quality has a price..Version: 1.4.7

RemarkableI decided to explore alternatives to Twitter lately and stumbled upon this world decentralized social media and I was pleasantly surprised to find real respectable people, I have yet to encounter a ‘troll’ or content I find offensive or frustrating. The app has many features to tune out the noise and it’s driven by real people talking about real things. It’s a lot smaller than Twitter, there are no celebrities here and weirdly, it works. There is a learning curve but other users are extremely helpful in explaining things!.Version: 1.3.1

LogoI think the logo should be “t” or the elephant But not “m”.Version: 1.3.0

Twitter immigrant enjoying new fediverseLoving Mastodon. Lots to learn but I love to learn and people here are so helpful. People say its like the early days of twitter but I was there too and it isn’t. It’s so much better. I’ve yet to venture beyond the one platform, but I’ve only been here a minute. I’d love a visual posted somewhere to show how the fediverse works or intersects and I’m super excited for the next version with a translation feature..Version: 1.4.5

Discovering MastadonI’m still finding my way around but I like the set up. It’s Friendlier than Twitter (so far) and fewer aggressive individuals seem to last the course. Try it..Version: 1.4.7

AccessibleI just came to review this app to suggest improvements to accessibility. There was an update which solved the problem I had. Great app with VoiceOver and braille..Version: 1.4.11

Mastodon goodWhen you create an account it can be confusing but just choose a server that looks popular and you’ll be ready to go. Created an account on the wrong server? Just make a new one on the right one. Once you’ve got this part down it’s social media without trolls and bigots! Sounds pretty good huh!.Version: 1.5

Ignores some settingsI mostly like using the official Mastodon app on my iPad and iPhone, but there are some annoying things that keep me trying other apps. In my settings I have chosen to always show media and always expand posts with content warning, but the app ignores my settings. On the iPad, when in landscape orientation, which is how I always use my iPad, I find the layout annoying. The main feed is fine, but the feed on the right, with the choices of local, etc. is cramped. And some posts are not properly justified and overflow the right side of the screen. It might be better to have a toolbar like the one on the left side that lets you choose another feed (local, explore, hashtag, etc.) to view in the main feed part. It would also be nice if the app had an easier way to update to the latest posts. Perhaps when starting up the app it could automatically fetch the latest posts in the main feed and show a button to allow me to show them. I hope the app will continue to be updated and improved. I am liking Mastodon as an alternative to Twitter. A really good mobile app will enhance that experience..Version: 1.4.7

Love the connections I’ve made!So far on Mastodon I’ve gotten random history, astrology, and science facts all through my feed, and ZERO negativity. Such a warm and inviting place to meet new people and learn new things! **some have complained that it’s hard to use, I find it to be a learning curve. It’s exactly the same as you’re used to, without the extra drama..Version: 1.4.9

Solid app except…It’s been a solid app for me, but recently it won’t show any new posts unless I quit the app and restart it. I don’t know if it’s a problem with the instance I’m on or if a recent change broke the app..Version: 1.4.11

IOS keyboard is freezing on this appThe app is really good, different than other ones however when editing a message a status the iOS keyboard on iPhone 13, is stuck whiles typing a message. Tried to remove and re add the app but no joy. Running iOS 16.3. Many thanks.Version: 1.4.11

Such a refreshing new beginningLove that there’s a distinct lack of the Twitter toxicity that was becoming so prevalent and even more so since Musk bought it. Run by hard working volunteers this is a great step forward..Version: 1.4.7

EnjoyingAfter only 2 hours on Mastodon, already enjoying the experience. Much friendlier people..Version: 1.4.5

Self hosting! The service is good because you can self host your server. It’s like a Facebook way of being private. Create a mastodon server for family and only invite who is family, no one else!.Version: 1.5.1

Great app. Needs Local and Federated timelines. This app is beautifully put together. It’s privacy respecting. And, it’s frequently updated. Who could ask for more? Me! As many other have agreed, please add Local and Federated timelines? Maybe they could be hidden behind an “Advanced” section in settings and be “activated”. Their omission makes the app next to useless for me. EDIT: the “local” timeline is now included! It’s a little hidden, but it’s a step in the right direction. Thanks Eugen! Mastodon is an incredible place..Version: 1.4.0

My viewGreat app and beats twitter hands down!.Version: 1.4.7

Amazing improvementsWhen I first got the app, I liked the aesthetics but there was quite a bit missing. I couldn't see those I'm following or my followers. I couldn't use multiple accounts without a hassle. I didn't understand how to write direct messages (this was a misunderstanding on my part) and I couldn't view the federated timeline. Fortunately in 1.2.0, it's now possible to see followers and those you're following. Possibly more importantly, multi account support is now stellar. Using multiple accounts is vital on decentralized platforms and protocols such as ActivityPub, and this gets it right. Maybe the federated timeline will come later, or maybe it'd be difficult to justify given Apple's strict rules, but it's chaotic and spammy enough that I don't mind logging in on a browser for the few times I need it. I love how quickly this project is taking shape. Its UI is simple yet does exactly what I want it to do. And that wouldn't be possible if it weren't a free and open source project!! Props to MainasuK and Gargron :).Version: 1.2.0

I like itLoving tha app. Just getting into Mastodon before I leave Twitter behind. Just a couple of things. The timeline jumps when you load more toots. It could really do with an unread counter. The other thing is I don’t really understand the different communities and wonder if I’m in the right one, or if I can change over..Version: 1.4.11

At last a real social media siteI returned to this site after learning about twitter being sold to the elephant sweat. In two days speaking to people who are on it, I feel at peace and more alive than I have been in years, it’s 1000% better than any other site..Version: 1.4.5

BrilliantThe formatting is intuitive, and there are lots of settings to personalise your experience for optimal accessibility. My only feedback is that I can't seem to find any options to edit or pin posts, or see posts pinned as they are on desktop Mastodon. Either adding these features or making them more accessible would make this app even better!.Version: 1.4.9

The platform is great, the app needs some workI am a fan of the Mastodon platform as a social media, but this app needs some improvements. As for design, I think the font size and spacing is too large, and I wish it was a bit more compact. There are some weird quirks like your timeline feed not saving your place when you go to another tab and back. Also, whenever your post something or update your profile, it doesn’t update until you manually refresh. I’ve also had trouble with gifs not playing and URLs not registering as links. It’s definitely worth using in its current state but there is a lot of room for improvement..Version: 1.4.8

Decent app, could use some tweaksI recently discovered the Fediverse and I'm smitten. Using the Mastodon app to access it is mostly good enough but there are a few things they could improve upon. For instance, on any post you can touch the ellipsis on the byline and bring up various options. These include options to report the post, or mute or block the poster. But no option to follow them. To do that, you have to click through to their profile. It's odd that silencing people is easier than building a network..Version: 1.4.9

Please read!!!!Mastodon I love the app, interface, and content has so much to offer. Please check into the following. Twitter users like myself want to migrate, biggest obstacle is that when I go to see the followers of those I want to follow (easiest way to migrate from Twitter), the option to see following rather than followers is glitched out. Never loads. Please fix!!.Version: 1.4.8

JoyousThe care and thoughtfulness put into making this a positive place to be is a wonderful thing. Definitely recommended..Version: 1.4.5

Getting better all the timeI’ve been really impressed with this, especially as there’s no megabucks involved the app is really good and although the web app does a couple of more things, the mobile app lets one navigate to the web app through the account section. Excited to see how this improves over time. Definitely more pleasant than the birdie place..Version: 1.4.5

Mastodon is how social media should be ♥️Non commercial, corporate big tech free, no data harvesting, I own my data, no ads, my personal information not sold to advertisers or used to train AIs, no algorithm blocking, censoring or gatekeeping. Decentralised and people powered! A true digital village square. I love it.Version: 2023.11

Mastodon is great!I love Mastodon and this app is great for its simplicity. It does have a few issues that bother me on a regular basis, though. First, posts are limited to 500 characters even if your instance supports more (I'm on c.im which allows up to 5000). Second, adding good alt-text to images is hard as it only shows a single line of text that is the width of the screen. And, finally, it displays filtered posts at their full size so there's just big blocks of empty space that you have to scroll through in the feed. Other than those few annoyances, it's a fantastic app!.Version: 2023.11

Loving it so farDawn of a new era. Warm welcomes abound.Version: 1.4.8

Almost works perfectly on macosThis client is awesome on my iPhone, but when it comes to running it on macos, it has one major flaw: the toolbar that shows the post privacy controls and ability to add media, etc, is just flat out missing (shows up as a blank bar at the bottom of the window). Not a slight against the authors -- what they've achived is really awesome -- but it does make it very difficult to use properly on macos. Looking forward to fixes in the future, and in the meantime, I'll just use iOS. :D.Version: 1.4.5

Why does toot default to followers only with no apparent option to changeWhy does toot default to followers only with no apparent option to change.Version: 1.4.5

Great Twitter ReplacementPhasing off Twitter.Version: 2023.16

Account preferences glitch? And timeline viewHome iOS App appears to work well but 2 observations: (1) the account > preferences > sensitive content > 'always expand posts with sensitive content' radio button does not appear to do what it says: both content, and any media, are still arriving on my home timeline obscured if CW tagged by poster. (2) I would like a counter on the home timeline view (a la TweetBot?) To indicate number of unread posts above. I'd like to be able to set the start point of the timeline at 'last read post' by default if possible? Otherwise stable and - I still reckon - best of all the iOS supporting apps for Mastsdon 👍😃.Version: 1.4.5

Better than TwitterI've been on Twitter for 2 years when Elon toke over. This app is like Twitter but Elon isn't running it, thank you for this app!.Version: 2023.8

Best microblogging platformMore sane users than birdsite, and not meta (need i say more).Version: 2023.11

Grab Your Trunk & Jump In FolksIt is a little disconcerting when you first land, as you find yourself surrounded by intelligent, artistic, socially liberal people; all folding up their parachutes and slapping each other on the back. It is like a version of Cheers, where every geek gets your jokes and where niche interests like pinhole photography are actual currency..Version: 1.4.7

This is the place we never knew till Twitter killed itselfBut heck, I’m glad we went through the pain barrier- because this is what we want from social media: kind, decent, generous and full of good people. Brilliant.Version: 1.4.5

CritiqueIn my opinion, The program seems well put together, and the elephant motif like Babar the children’s story is cute and endearing. And the publish note is sort of cool, because you are really putting yourself out on the web. I’ve had some trouble uploading phone shots from the file size of an iPhone 8 being too big. And also deciding on a community at first was odd. The LGBT was only in Asian characters, and mindful social is the next one I picked. Hope this helps your fabulous platform to connect minds!.Version: 1.4.8

Really goodLove it. Would like to see filtered posts shrunk down and taking up less space..Version: 2023.13

Love itI don’t know if this makes sense, but this app feels a lot more laid back compared to the hysterics I’m confronted with it the other one..Version: 1.4.7

Functional but doesn’t fit my needsThe app seems functional and easy to use and also now supports multiple accounts, however it is still missing some features like access to pinned toots..Version: 1.2.0

I use three apps..TOOT! was my first, Mastodon my second, and Meta-text my third … and I absolutely love each one… seeing all the Mastodon Fediverse comments parsed in a different way is much better than in one way by one app..Version: 1.5

Decentralized is greatWe need more social media apps that are secure and have the users interest in mind not just greedy profit mongers.Version: 1.2.0

Better Twitter, but also a bit boringThe fact that you could easily make your own server on this platform is kinda nice. One server could have strict rules, while another could have as little moderation as is allowed. Custom emoji, animated avatars, CWs, it’s great! My only issue is that there isn’t enough people. This platform is still a bit niche, so I guess I can see why. But I hope that someday, this could be the Twitter everyone wants..Version: 1.5.2

Mastodon is goodLike twitter but better.Version: 1.4.5

Fantastic!Better than Twitter for iOS. Really nice and snappy. Easy to use and fantastic UI/UX. Well done I love it..Version: 1.4.7

Learning curveStill getting the idea. New to mastodon.Version: 1.4.8

Exciting opportunities with greater functionality than Twitter and more friendlyAfter an initial hurdle of figuring out that it doesn’t really matter which server is chosen, and having to manage one more password and TFA process, the web and client experiences are more than satisfying. More characters, an ability to edit, a way to view followers and those followed without requiring third-party apps, a more-than-decent way to include media, and good exploration are all bonuses to an experience that reminds me of the early days of Twitter where the possibilities for the future were all open. Mastodon feels good..Version: 1.4.7

Crashes on opening on iOSCan't run the latest version, it crashes on opening!.Version: 2023.14

Great social platformWorks well, seems to have a friendly and positive community with lots to scroll through. Pretty easy to use as well. You just go with the main feed/community or choose another to join and off you go. The general feed and trending posts are in the search tab. Everything should be fairly familiar if you’ve used Twitter before it died or Threads just you get to choose what community to sign up for..Version: 2023.11

3 days and loving itI actually want to thank Elon. Think I will. I really love Mastodon and would never have even know about it but for the godawful mess he’s made of Twitter..Version: 1.4.9

A Migrating BirdMastodon has much to recommend it: no ads, 500 characters to post with, no algorithms skewing content t… I’m delighted with it. It takes a bit of time to adjust from the other place, but the community feel is real, the ambience much less confrontational. It’s a keeper..Version: 1.4.5

Very Good but needs workOverall the app is a perfect replacement for the dumpster fire that is Twitter However, there is one big(ish) issue with the app. Whenever someone follows you, you can’t immediately see an updated number (eg: you have 14 and 2 more follow but you still see 14). Besides that the app is fine.Version: 1.4.5

New to Mastodon.I was looking for a new site so I could escape the bird. Mastodon is easy to sign up to, easy to find interesting others, and a kind place. It’s easier to use than it looks from the outside..Version: 1.4.5

Great Twitter alternativeJust switched from Twitter, east to use, very warm and friendly community that helps you settle in and adjust. I donated a small monthly amount via Patreon as it’s a not for profit. Love it!.Version: 1.4.7

Making the switchTo be perfectly honest, I’ve never really been a Twitter user, it was the only platform I stayed clear of. Now that that bird site is being run by a loon, everyone is flying over to mastadon. I decided to take the leap and join. I was immediately welcomed by so many like-minded individuals, the constant barrage of advertising from other social media platforms did not exist here on Mastodon end it finally felt like I had found a place where my voice could be heard. so far, I am enjoying all aspects of the community, the interface seems familiar, and I look forward to seeing how this community grows..Version: 1.4.7

Who chooses the sidebar posts? The Mastodon app has improved on the iPad, except that the user cannot deselect the sidebar. I don’t usually care for your posts, but even if a few are okay, they don’t renew during the day. I don’t get the point of such a list. I would rather choose my own sidebar items as posts or have no sidebar. Even if I block a user in the sidebar, the post remains. The news and hashtag options are useful, but the posts are not, even if you tell me that they are derived from some kind of analysis of my users and interests..Version: 2023.9

So Far, So GoodI miss the people on Twitter. I hope they all decide to reconvene on Mastodon..Version: 1.4.9

ProblemsThere has been no email for confirmation received, despite asking for it several times. Also on logging in on the App I’m confronted with everything in Portuguese for some odd reason. Right now the App is completely and utterly useless, so the rating is 1 star!.Version: 1.4.5

Not intended as a Twitter replacement but it might have to beThe product design and intentionality departs from merely a Twitter clone, and should be seen as it’s own thing. But personally I do feel it’s what Twitter was in a now far gone past; a chance to interact with new people, some of them quite prominent figures now many of them migrated here (thanks mr Bird-in-chief) and the absence of obscure algorithms can be felt and …enjoyed..Version: 1.4.5

Lacks website features?I like the app but don’t understand what it offers that a web browser doesn’t, apart from maybe notifications. I can’t figure out how to turn on local and federated timelines, nor the ability to switch to different Mastodon instances. I use it, but still have to rely on the website. I also find swiping between timelines and notifications on the web a little easier than tapping buttons at the bottom in the app..Version: 1.0.6

Great appGetting started is a little complicated but once you get set up with an account, it’s a pretty straightforward Twitter clone. And I mean that in the best way possible—it recreates what made Twitter great a decade ago, rather than the mess it turned into. No ads, no algorithm, no data-harvesting. Just follow your friends, or family, or interesting people, or whatever. Have a good time..Version: 1.4.8

Pretty good startWhile it's obviously not the most comprehensive client available, I'm finding it the most comfortable to work with from a reading and writing point of view. Hopefully more functionality will be added over time (easy access to the federated feed would be nice for example), but for now this feels like a nicely accessible client..Version: 1.4.0

Home away from Space KarenI think, once you figure it out Mastodon is a great place and just as easy as the bird to use..Version: 1.4.7

Much better then Twitter. No ads, no Elon Musk, best app/website ever..Version: 1.4.9

Some things that could make the app great for VoiceOverI’ve used Mastodon since early 2023, and while I broadly enjoy the freedom to see who I want in my timeline without ads, recommended content, and other algorithmic garbage, I feel the official Mastodon app could be better-optimized for VoiceOver. As a VoiceOver user, I do not need to hear other users’ URLs immediately after hearing their display names, as I find that’s more superfluous information I have to listen to before hearing the content of a post. Therefore, there should be an option in the app’s settings that determines how users are identified in the Home timeline, which could help reduce excess verbosity. Also, there does not seem to be any way I’ve found to clear notifications from within the app. On the web, I can reveal my notifications, click the “Show settings” button, followed by the “clear notifications” button to clear notifications from the web view, however they are still displayed in the app with no way to clear them. Similar to other apps which show notifications, there should be a “Clear” option in the actions rotor for notifications in the official Mastodon app, or alternatively, an option that’s revealed when triple-tapping the notification to access a context menu. Also, when clearing notifications from the web, they should also be automatically cleared from any apps signed into that account..Version: 2023.16

Crashes! It’s okay once you get the hang of it, but it’s quite annoying that it crashes each time I attempt to edit my profile—can’t change my icon or banner..Version: 1.4.5

Very friendlyThanks for being so nice.Version: 2023.10

New to MastodonFor ethical reasons I decided to defect to Mastodon from Twitter. Mastodon is taking me a bit of time to get used to and I am looking forward to the community growing larger. Am enjoying the new social media and am very glad I made the move..Version: 1.4.7

Pretty good alternative to TwitterI think it could be better if the sign up process was easier. Right away you’re hit with the choice of what server to join, which is a bit paralyzing since you don’t know anything about the servers or what’s different about them. Also, you can’t search servers from the main site very well. Another thing I think could be better is how likes, comments and RT are displayed. Visually, I find it challenging to tell the difference between a RT or a like. Also, why does it make me enter my login info every single time I want to follow someone? This is highly annoying. These are all things I think should be addressed if you want to make it more user friendly for people migrating from Twitter..Version: 1.4.5

The Twitter killer! If you have a Twitter account, you might as well tell your followers you’re moving onto Mastodon. This app is simply amazing, it has an almost “Discord”-esque vibe to how communities are structured and ran. Whilst still following the same overall “platform” guidelines. As an LGBTQ+ person, I’m so happy to have frontline representation within the app by having an entire “LGBT” server search section within the app. This level of inclusion, for MY community is something that even Discord doesn’t have, and I want to thank everyone at Mastodon for including this into the app! Seriously, it means a lot to have one more app (in an honestly small pool of apps) that says “Hey! We accept and support your community. Period, dot”. All-in-all, I very much love the community inclusion. I also very much like the, well defined UI/UX, and its nice features such as using emoji like, Blobcat. Alongside super fast performance and rock hard stability, Mastodon is a good reason to finally abandon Twitter, and the toxicity, and lack of support or care from management. 10/10 app..Version: 2023.11

Beautiful, and feature full, but it does not update anymoreGreat app. Feature full and beautiful, but it stopped updating the feed. Not even if I close and open it again it works. I will keep it installed in case it works, but it is not my main app anymore..Version: 1.4.11

UnfinishedThis doesn’t have support for local or federated timelines and thus isn’t yet feature complete. Will revisit if and when these features are added. Update: local now added, but not federated yet..Version: 1.4.0

Works great with voiceover to appointAt the time of this writing, I am running iOS 16.5 on an iPhone SE three. Whenever I write a new Mastodon for those to read and I’m done with it by dictation, I double tap to end dictation. Dictation doesn’t seem to want to stop. As a matter of fact, the whole app wants to crash. So I have to hit the home button before this happens. Or I have to shorten what I want to say. This is very disconcerting. I don’t know if there is something wrong with the app or not. This is a fresh install of the app. I hope this gets fixed within the Mastodon app itself or within iOS. Other than that this is a great app. I wish the notification sound were a bit louder. They are a bit quiet..Version: 2023.9

Friendly! It’s clunky to read at first, but reading or finding Twitter friends via #Hashtags makes it easier. As months go on it will settle. They’ve had a huge influx from Twitter & elsewhere lately. The site is friendly so far. They carefully monitor it for hate speech or sensitive images etc. It’s not Twitter, but a good alternative. In comparison Facebook is a cesspit..Version: 1.4.5

Excellent Twitter AlternativeThis platform has been much more pleasant to use. Being able to just see a feed of cool people I like to follow with no ads and fewer alt right mouth breathers is excellent! Also the only good social media platform with the ability to go single-tenant self hosted. As for the app itself, very clean and easy to use. One criticism is a bug I noticed where certain profiles don’t load and crash the app. I have examples if you are curious..Version: 1.4.0

Nice place to connectThis works for casual conversations and connections. It is refreshingly civil. Thanks to the dedication of everyone working hard behind the scenes..Version: 1.4.9

So easy to use!Very friendly people here. Thanks for adding me ..Version: 2023.16

Almost AwesomeVery good although the onboarding is a bit confusing for those not IT literate. I love the translate feature but would love it if it would auto translate it in the feed to make following people that normally post in other languages easier to scroll through their posts. Even if the translation isn’t spot on the general gist should be good enough for skim reading..Version: 2023.9

Just get on the elephant in the room!As the T words sputters it’s last you need not despair. Get on the mastodon. Come for a jaunt in a decentralised pleasure park. You need not listen to megalomaniac babies anymore..Version: 1.4.5

Feels more realEarly internet punk rock vibes. Getting started is a little cumbersome but once you start following a handful of accounts it’s pretty intuitive. The lack of algorithms pushing artificial engagement is noticeable. It’s like being in a nice coffee shop, nobody can pay for a giant megaphone. Kind of like real life..Version: 1.4.7

Easy PeasySo many people saying how difficult it is to set up a Mastodon account - it’s really as easy as Twitter but without a complete loony in charge..Version: 1.4.5

Social media by the peopleI really like that anyone can set up a Mastodon community, that it’s not dependent on the whims of corrupt oligarchs..Version: 1.4.7

Good. My favourite, one big omissionI’d like to see alt text for photos etc. I have no major vision problem but for those that do I think it’s essential. I personally find that it often gives me a more nuanced view of what the photographer or poster was intending or found important themselves. Of course it might be me that just hasn’t yet found out how to show it..Version: 1.4.5

Much needed translation is now availableI stayed away from using the Mastodon app and instead used other clients mainly due to a missing translate feature. Translation has been included in this release and it is great! At first I was kinda disappointed that you needed 2 clicks to translate a post (Options— Translate). However, later I realized that unlike other apps this option lets you see the translated text directly in your feed instead of needing to expand the text to see the translation. This is actually much better and I hope they keep it that way..Version: 1.4.9

Best Twitter substitute so farLike many in the site, I came to Mastodon after Musk started messing with Twitter. I signed up for Hive & Post too, but Mastodon is the only one that seems to be able to handle the sudden surge in usership. I’ve had much more engagement there than I expected and have found many of the journalists & publications I followed on Twitter there too. It is a little harder to search for individuals whose handles you don’t have and for the life of me I can not figure out how to add a header/banner to my profile which I’d really like to do. But those are minor issues in the grand scheme of things.Version: 1.4.8

Mastadon is the futureBut this app still needs work! The main UI issue I have with it is the timeline pops around you’re scrolling and there’s updates. It should pause updating until you move back to the top. 5 stars though because the social network is fantastic and I believe the mobile app will improve (it already has)..Version: 1.4.7
