Pestle: Recipe Organizer for Negative User Reviews

Looks nice, but needs workPestle looks nice but it still needs some work, specifically in Recipe creation and scanning. I used the camera scanning functionality - you get one scan for free, but it glitched out part way through, and when I went to try again I was blocked without subscribing. I signed up for the free pro trial to continue where I left off. It does a good job of pulling everything in, but it separates the quantities and the ingredients into two separate lines. I manually did this, deleting the extraneous lines, but when I saved two of my ingredients were lost. I manually added them again and they seem to be saved now. The notes field is only a single line, and does not allow line breaks, so it wasn’t very useful for what I wanted (including conversion to grams). I wish there was an option to scan and retain a copy of the original - there is a cover photo option but it seems to crop off the right half of my recipe..Version: 1.2

Couple things . . .#1 — Love this app (so far) mostly because it reformats the recipe to a VERY USER FRIENDLY recipe! It doesn’t save the entire article that the recipe is attached to. No adds no silly pop up’s nothing — just the recipe! This in and of itself puts this app at the top of my list for saving recipes from the internet. #2 — The only hiccup I have come across so far is the fact that about half of the time the app cannot save a recipe. It says it can’t access the url to save it. I’m guessing as the app grows and matures it will overcome this ‘hiccup’. Thank you for creating this very useful app! When the ‘hiccup’ is fixed I intend to up my star rating to 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Update: I have downgraded my review as the initial problem with the app not being able to extract the recipe has gotten worse. At least for me. Almost 100% of the recipes I try to save will not save. It’s very frustrating. Not sure if it’s only me who is having the problem or not. Maybe I’ll use the app at a later date but for now I cannot use it at all..Version: 1.2.6

Import doesn’t workRecipe import rarely works for me..Version: 1.3.3

Love it but…I love this app and have been using it for such a long time now but it just has a lot of issues. It’s super laggy and crashes constantly if trying to look through recipes or do anything other than stay on one page. It needs a lot of bug fixes and performance fixes. I ended up backing up my recipes elsewhere since this is unreliable right now and I just can’t trust it not to crash and delete my recipes again. However, if it were fixed and running well this would be one of the best recipe apps out there. (Note: I’m using iPhone 14 Plus running iOS 17.0.2).Version: 1.4.11

QuestionWhere is the ‘search’ bar to locate a recipe ? as well as the folder for ‘Recently Added’. ?.Version: 1.4.6

Great app butI love that app. Being using it quite often but there is one major flaw to it. A lot of recipes have now separate sections for ingredients. For example everything needs for the main dish, then for the sauce. Dry ingredient vs wet ones. Etc. Pestle is not able to import those into sections and aggregates everything together. This is really annoying as sometimes recipe will say: mix all the dry ingredients first. Etc. Please. Fix this. I’ve stopped using the app because of that..Version: 1.6.2

DisappointedFeatures work well except most important feature to me, namely the ability to scan handwritten family recipes. Scanner function is practically useless as it tries to scan handwritten words and convert to text but conversion feature is inadequate rendering almost everything unintelligible (and this is the case with fairly clear printed, non cursive handwriting). At least some other apps will let you scan the recipe without trying to convert, which gets you the digitized recipe without needing to input manually ( like anyone has time for that). If they could fix the conversion feature or add a full scan feature, this would be a perfect app for the text. Hope the developer can address this!.Version: 1.1.5

Locked RecipesGot a new phone now my own recipes are locked behind the paywall.Version: 1.6.4

Not ready, or at least not for meAfter discovering this app and developer on Reddit following a lengthy research period, I was looking forward to giving it a shot. It seemingly checked every box, and the developer inspired loads of confidence based on past work, frequency of updates, and communication. Unfortunately, minutes after signing up for a subscription, I found enough problems to decide this app either isn't ready -- or, at least, isn't for me. • URL importer fails on websites others handled with ease. • Image scanner either fails to open, locks up app, or the box doesn't resize properly. • Serving size should be a text box rather than a comedically slow +/- input. • This may be something I missed, but I'd prefer if all fields were visible during the input and simply didn't display when saved if empty. It's tedious to click to add serving size, nutritional information, etc. for each recipe because the app didn't import it. • Nearly forgot: the description and notes rarely imported, and wouldn't save on first manual input. I had to save, then paste these lines in again on most recipes I added. I'll keep an eye on things down the line, and possibly give it another shot after a few updates. As of now, I guess I'll have to lose my two-week trial, and go with my second choice..Version: 1.4.1

Good but expensiveIt’s good and I am interested in the full “pro” version to get over the 15 recipe limit but it’s really expensive. If you don’t love it then it’s a skip..Version: 1.1.5

Generally good. Some frustrating bugsOverall the app looks good and good nutritive to use. Experienced a couple of frustrating bugs where recipes are removed from the meal plan and folders deleted intermittently..Version: 1.0.4

Could be betterApp is good but always wants to save recipes as bookmarks instead of adding them to my recipe card which is very frustrating.Version: 1.4.11

Many issues and bugsThe app has many bugs that I have contacted the developer about but many of my requests have either been ignored or still remain unfixed. Good idea in theory but I’m going to be switching..Version: 1.5.2

Save your money!Total waste of time … threw two random (but mainstream) recipe links at it, from different recipe sites, and Pestle had no clue what to do with the recipes / links. Imho, just another wannabe app trying to suck money from people..Version: 1.0.1

Good (in parts)Just like the curate’s egg, this app is a mixed bag. When it works it’s great, but it cannot (yet) capture data from sites such as SBS food, or The Guardian. Yet it can save recipes from Midwestern US housewives. So for me it’s pretty useless. I’ve sent developers feedback prior to writing this review but have not had a reply. So I suggest you try before you buy and make sure Pestle plays well with your favourite cooking sites. Pity….Version: 1.0.5

Great app but need to pay for important featuresGreat app but need to pay for important features.Version: 1.3.5

RubbishNone of the advertised functionality works. Can't scan recipes, can't add from the Web, can't connect to Reminders. What an absolute pile of rubbish! Free trial cancelled within minutes..Version: 1.5.2

Keeps improving but still unreliableThe app has all the basics I need: import from websites, sync all devices, family sharing. It also has some extras I enjoy, like scaling ingredients and using other recipes as ingredients for complex recipes. Alas, even after the last update I still get the same bugs managing my cuisines and categories. I gave up on using those. The smart folders were fixed, that’s a big relief..Version: 1.6.4

Why won’t the app allow me to delete my account?! DELETE MY ACCOUNTDELETE MY ACCOUNT PLEASE.Version: 1.4.2

Needs an updateSo this app seemed so great when I first got it. However there’s 1 flaw I’ve come across with the shopping list. When I type it it doesn’t let me type what I want. For instance I’ll type a word and it automatically will change a letter and I can’t change it back. It’s very annoying. Even sometimes when I copy and paste a word it’ll change a letter. For example: Cream will be “cr6eam”. I don’t know why. And I can’t delete all the random shopping lists that it automatically made and I don’t use..Version: 1.3.5

BrokenPestle has reset/deleted all of my saved recipes twice now..Version: 1.6.5

When it works…I normally don’t write reviews, but I felt I needed to as I have been unable to get support for a problem that has happened to me multiple times now. For some reason, the recipes that I have saved don’t show up. It has happened twice before with deleting the app and reinstalling it resolving that issue. Now nothing seems to work and all the recipes I have saved are gone. I have reached out twice for assistance with no response. What’s the point of purchasing the lifetime subscription if one of the reasons I purchased it isn’t working..Version: 1.4.11

Intuitive UI with glaring bugMost aspects of the recipe import UI are intuitive. Only criticism is that the category/cuisine tagging function is a hot mess. Needs to have a specific menu for me to edit existing tag. Plus the tags don’t sync well between my devices at all..Version: 1.4.5

Needs a Mac appGreat app ! But needs a Mac app..Version: 1.4.11

No SupportGiving this app 2 stars because I absolutely loved it so much and can’t bear to give it only one. Sadly, since I have changed to a new device I have not been able to use my full version of this app I purchased and when I “restore purchases” it does not allow me to see my recipes and use the app beyond the 15 recipe limit. I have reached out to the support email like it says on the website, and have not been able to get a response to help me out. This is so sad because what would’ve been a 5 star app has really left me feeling ripped off and like I should not have purchased the upgrade..Version: 1.4.8

Major timer issues - No supportThe timers on this app have never worked. When I add a timer, it shows double notifications for the same timer. If I add subsequent timers, none of them show up in the notification center or in the live activity. Then, when I cancel the original timer, it still remains in the live activity and notification center. Lastly, there’s an issue with the app not allowing me to swipe left and cancel a timer. I’ve tried emailing support countless times with no response whatsoever..Version: 1.4.3

Great app with major bugs and poor customer supportI bought the lifetime memebership of the app and use it regularly. Reading recipes is a great experience but when it gets to entering or adding recipes, it's full of bugs. Two bugs that I encounter constantly is that when I try to add bookmarks from Instagram, it says the recipe is imported but never added to the bookmarks so it basically doesn't work. The other issue is when trying to scan the recipes, the scanning screens have a bug and never brings up the camera to scan. Emailed the support with full description of the issues but never got a response or acknowledgement for receiving the emails. So my overall experience is frustration with a non responsive app developer! Hopefully the developer would read this review and respond..Version: 1.3.6

Can’t test without creating an account. No desktop app. From a long-time user of MasterCook and Paprika: Any developer that wants to compete in this space needs to create some level of feature parity with the leading apps. IOS has come a long way, but is insufficient for stand-alone use. You need a macOS desktop app. People are, rightly, more aware of privacy and personal data security than ever. I would like to test this app, but will not create a user account for the “privilege.” I would be happy to try a non-syncing evaluation version before surrendering personal data..Version: 1.4

Timer won’t workHave to keep reinstalling the app to stop the timers..Version: 1.4.10

Potentially helpful appWe have issues syncing the menu and recipes on the household plan. The shopping list is pointless without categories to help organize while at the store. Can’t delete recipes added by other family member. Sometimes recipes added would duplicate themselves. When adding a note to meal plan, no way to edit note without completely retyping the whole thing. Hoping the developer continues to improve the app so it is more useful..Version: 1.3.5

Almost perfectI currently store my recipes as cards in a Trello board which works okay, but Pestle takes it to the next level by converting links to useable details. I would love to instead use Pestle as my recipe box, but it’s missing a key functionality for that: there is no option to add multiple photos/screenshots when adding a new recipe from scratch. For instance, sometimes I’ll take pictures of a recipe from a magazine or a cookbook. It would be nice to be able to attach all of these photos (rather than just one cover photo) to the from-scratch recipe, rather than have to type out all the ingredients and steps myself if I wanna get them in there..Version: 1.0.10

Decent but flawedWhat works. Import function Receipt scaling Unit conversion What doesn’t work. Meal plan bulk shopping list, if you have 3 receipts uses tomatoes it doesn’t say you need 3 tomatoes, it says you need 1 then several lines later it’ll say you need 1 again. Makes shopping very hard from the meal planner Frequent crashes, randomly missing recipes, intermittent cross device sharing.Version: 1.3.6
