✓ Gotta be honest……. ClunkyI have to be totally honest here and I don’t write May app reviews. This app is clunky. By that, I mean it has limited functionality. For example, my pellet smoker temp can be adjusted in 5° increments manually on the unit dial. This app only allows for 10° increments. An extremely common temp to smoke at, as we all know, is 225°. I can set that temp on the unit but if for any reason I need to set that temp from the app, I can only set to 230° or 220°. Also, how many recipes you have call for smoking temp to be 225° and then finish at 275°? Not possible from the app. Y’all seriously need to do better with this. Love the idea. ✓ This app ruined my grillI’ve been using my grill for 2 years now and have loved it. Was the old smoke it app outdated? Yes, but you know what? It got the job done. Why fix something that isn’t broken. Now there’s a new app that we’re forced to update to and in order to use this app you need to update your grill software as well. DONT DO IT!!!! I’ve had no issues with my grill until now. Once I updated everything like they told me to my grill would no longer get up to temp and eventually just filled my burn pot to the point that it snuffed out the flame and told me my hopper was empty when it wasn’t. I’m my opinion Pit Boss not only owes me $100 for the steaks they ruined, but I want a new grill!!.Version: 1.0.1
✓ Crap app and false advertisementI bought the Pitt Boss 820 because of the added feature of controlling the cook from your phone. I knew of the app because of all the advertising stickers all over the new smoker I was excited about. Well, followed the instructions to a T and was not connecting to the IT. Today (thanksgiving and my 5th cook) the app decides it is having a server error. I close it and come back in manually putting in my credentials;server error. Try to reset my password for the first time and it tells my I’ve exceeded my password changes. I’ve had it work for my cook 2 of 5 cooks which was convenient when it worked. Shame on Pitt Boss for not caring about fixing this issue. It otherwise is quality built product. Profits over quality i guess.Version: 1.1.4

✓ Needs to be more user friendly!!!!The app works ok for setting temps and monitoring your cool, but the notifications are lacking. It’s too easy to miss a notification that your grill is up to temp, your meat probe is at its set point, etc. There needs to be a way to customize the notifications. Being able to choose a unique sound and making the notifications time sensitive would be a huge improvement. As it stands, apple does not allow the settings for sounds and such to be changed for third party apps in your he native settings. I’m here need to be changed in the settings for the app, itself. Put boss does not have any sort of implementation for this. I doubt pit boss will read this, let alone make any changes to remedy this, but hopefully others can see what they are downloading, before clicking that install button..Version: 1.1.4

✓ Don’t do it! ( well at least not yet) updatedNo Wi-Fi connectivity to monitor when away, bluetooth range poor, no longer can set temp in increment of 5 degrees, no display on what functions, auger, fan, igniter are working. And that’s just the beginning, spend time reading other reviews to see what else is missing. Worst part is you need to update the firmware for the smoker so it will work with the new app, and once you do you can’t go back to the old app that worked just fine, you will be stuck with the new app. I hope Pitboss resolves these missing features sooner than later. I wish I had read the reviews before blindly updating my smoker… Update: OK now they brought back the icons telling you what’s going on with the grill. But now you cannot set a temperature between 250 and 300 degrees, lol, You have to do it from the grill. OK Pit Boss keep working you’ll get there someday. Would like to upgrade the stars, but icons were the least of my concerns, You need to give us more flexibility with the temperature. ✓ Don’t fix and replace an app that wasn’t broken!The previous app, Smoke It, was fairly utilitarian but it was reliable and easy to use. The Pit Boss app that replaced it is neither of those. Connection via wifi and/or Bluetooth is extremely bad and inconsistent. I loaded the app today and was connected via wifi and Bluetooth. Everything seemed to be working ok. I do some things around the house and check the app again, it shows that I’m connected and it shows the temperature… but it’s about 10 degrees off. I try to reload the app and it sits there and never loads up. The old Smoke It app wasn’t the best looking, but it always was reliable. This thing doesn’t even seem like it connects half the time, it says my grill is off when it’s on, etc etc. There’s really no point to the app if you can’t keep track of your grill’s temp or the temp of the meat. I’ll probably try it one more time but will call it a bust if I can’t get it to work. The worst part is that I can’t even go back to the old app. I hope the developers fix this, but I might have to go a different route..Version: 1.0.2

✓ Software is AwfulThis has potential to be amazing. To be able to run errands or run to the store and be able to check on your temps and also adjust them would be great. However, I can’t even do anything with the app without an update and the system won’t update. I have good internet operating on 2.4ghz. Tried everything and even spoke on the phone with customer service for 30 minutes and he could not figure it out. Their answer? Is to wait on the developers of the app to fix it. I’ll tell you how to fix it! Take it back and go buy a Traeger! The app is completely useless until they fix this!! Do better!!.Version: 1.1.4

✓ BEWARE - This app simply does not workWhen trying to set up the app and connect my grill for the first time, when I get to Step 2 the “Continue” button is greyed out and unresponsive even when I toggle on and off my Bluetooth which is not allowing me to continue on with the set up process. Pit Boss app phone support created a ticket for my case, but essentially told me that no one will reach out with a resolution (positive or negative) and to continue trying everyday. This is not an issue with my phone but an issue with the app. Very disappointing and I will not be recommending anybody to purchase PitBoss products because their claim to have a working app is a disgrace. ✓ App operationI have changed over as per the alert on Smoke IT. I now have wifi connection issues which I have never had before. I have use smoke it APP every week for 2 months. Quick seamless quick. I swap over to Pit Boss Grill or info is only for American. I now have not wifi connect but the app tells me it connected. The app is very slow. In all operations. ✓ New App Less FeaturesDisappointed in the app. I used the previous app for many years. While it was not the best in the world, it still gave me the ability to do many other things that this app doesn’t. This biggest downfall is the connectivity with the grill itself. No matter if it’s wifi or Bluetooth, I have to be standing at least 10 ft around the grill for it to connect. It completely defeats the purpose of being able to leave my house and continue to monitor the temps. ✓ Literally the worstLiterally the worst app I’ve ever used for anything in any category. It has almost no features and the very few things it’s meant to do it just flat doesn’t do. It has a power icon to turn on and off the grill but it says it won’t do that because it’s a safety issue…. So why put the icon there at all!?? It does not let you activate the auger which is what I downloaded it for. It has a timer but you can’t even cancel the timer without manually rolling it back to zero. It does not allow me to set the temperature which seems like it would be the absolutely most basic feature. It does not retain the setting for Fahrenheit/Celsius. ✓ Should have read the app reviews before I bought the grillLove the grill it does amazing and makes smoking easy but this app is terrible… I got through my burn off and halfway through my first cook before Wi-Fi stopped connecting not allowing me to see anything cook temp or probe temp. Figured a hard reset would work before starting my next cook and the issue still persisted. I can’t even get the grill to connect to Wi-Fi at all I just get an “error trying to connect to Wi-Fi” and Bluetooth doesn’t allow me to do anything either even pressed up to the control unit. Guess it’s back to the trusty wireless probe thanks for releasing something sub par that was a huge selling point on my grill in the first place..Version: 1.1.3
✓ DisappointedI tried the first SmokeIt app with little success. Often times the app would not even find my grill. So I was excited to see the new Pit Boss app. I downloaded the app and found my grill. After turning on the grill I was able to connect the Bluetooth and wifi. I was excited! And that’s where it all went wrong. As soon as you get more than ten feet away from the grill the Bluetooth disconnects. Which sort of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it? But even if you are standing right next to the grille, and connected, I couldn’t do a thing. Couldn’t even see what the temperature of the grill was. ✓ Worst first impressionSmoker seems Great, if only this Horrible App made more sense. Super restrictive and does not connect properly. As soon as I opened it, it failed to connect to Bluetooth, then when I tried wifi, said I needed a firmware update, then when I tried to update, said it will be slower to use Bluetooth to update, wifi would be faster, and I still can’t connect to Bluetooth. See welders I’m going with this? In a big circle of frustration. Tried deleting the grill from the app, and now I can’t get it to reconnect. ✓ Getting BetterWhen I first got this app, it would not connect to my grill. It looks like there were server issues or app performance issues overall. It looks to be getting more stable as the alp matures. Enhancement ideas: change the probe set temperature from a free text field to a slider, just like the grill set temperature. Spritz/wrap Timer- just like adding a destination on your route within maps, can we add functionality to add a spritz time? Meaning, we can set the overall cook for 10 hours, then set spritz timers at whatever time we want, like every 2 hours. Maybe we could be able to label the timer whatever we want and set it just to remind us to spritz or wrap..Version: 1.1.2

✓ Trash app that rarely worksThis app started with promise and basically nose dived into the garbage soon afterward. I’ve had to uninstall the app multiple times for giving me dozens of false notifications in the middle of the night randomly when my smoker isn’t even on. Every time I reinstall it I have to struggle to set up the smoker again because the stupid online only design is slow and poorly maintained. If I could give less than one star I would. ✓ SmokeIT vs pit boss appTo sell me the grill with one app and switch it to another is classic Bait and switch! They look the same but smokeIT had more features. The one I need the most is temperature notifications. Pit boss currently has no notifications when temperatures are reached. Isn’t this the whole reason and purpose behind the app. So you can go about your day preparing and doing other tasks and then be alerted when settings are met! ✓ New or OldI first used this app 3 years ago when I got my first pit boss. It was good for recipes but would freeze a lot of the time. Then I got a new Pit Boss Pro Series and used the Smoke It app and that worked great, but now there’s a message that says to use the “new” pit boss grills app which is exactly the same…. The opening screen still freezes just like it did years ago. This needs to be fixed and ASAP. What’s the $1000 price point for if the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth don’t work? ✓ Missing Old FeaturesThis new app that Pit Boss directed us to download looks nice but is very very basic with what it shows the user. The old SmokeIT app would show you what part of the smoker was active at any given moment and alert you as to when your grill and meat would reach your set temperature, this app doesn’t seem to have any of that. This app only shows you what temp your heating your grill to, what temp it is currently at as well as your probe set temp and current temp, nothing further. Wi-Fi at first would say it was connected but then wouldn't show connection in the app and I finally figured out that you had to select save settings after the “connection successful” message for it to actually go into effect. Hopefully they’ll see these reviews and make this app we were forced into more like the SmokeIT app that had much more functionality..Version: 1.0

✓ Completely UnreliableThis is the first negative review I’ve ever written. If I’m unhappy with a place or product, I normally keep my opinion to myself so that I don’t harm someone’s business. This app is so bad that I can’t keep it to myself. I own an Austin XL, a Laredo 1000 Platinum, and a 1600 Pro Series. I love the Pit Boss brand and the food that comes out of them. Unfortunately, the app is not as good as the smoker. Every page in the app is preceded by an error warning. Sometimes the tab loads after the warning, and sometimes it doesn’t. I regularly have to remove my smokers and then re add them for them to show up, and then minutes later an error occurs and I can’t control them through the app again. It’s Thanksgiving and I’m running all three smokers. I have to keep coming outside to ensure they are running the right temps as opposed to being able to work on other dishes. The Austin XL doesn’t have Bluetooth, so I can’t complain about that one. The others were desirable to me because of the Bluetooth. The 1600 cost a grand and the Laredo was $500. The apps should work when you charge that much. It has been several years that I have been trying and failing to use the apps. You’ve had enough time to work out the bugs. ✓ Nice looking.Like the new app, but the update that came with it not some much. I used to be able to set the grill temp by 5 degree intervals. Now it’s set to 10 degree intervals with the only exception being 225 is preset. The push notification that popped up explained that they’ve been proving the grilling experience with this frame ware update . One would think that they would give more control not less. Being able to set the temp in 1 degree increments would’ve been an improvement. This is a step back ! And not to forget that there are no graphs anymore. Hopefully, like many things these days. This app and frame ware update is only a first or second step in a process of updating and now they are just waiting for the feedback before making any more changes..Version: 1.0
✓ Love my smoker, today I hate the appUnfortunate it comes to this, but today is Thanksgiving. I need the app to work today for my 9 hour cook of my turkey. And the app can’t show to the graph, let alone connect very well without server issues. My theory is your servers are bogged down by the number of users connecting. Any other day though, the app has worked well. The part I’m frustrated about is this is the day I need it most and it’s failing me. ✓ Worse than its predecessorThis app is a huge, frustrating disappointment. The marketing devs are much more interested in having pretty full motion ads and connecting you to their online store than functionality and connecting to the expensive thing you already paid for. The page to connect via wifi to the device won’t scroll down, presuming you have one of the newest giant screen iOS devices, so you cant select your SSID and enter the password. Half the time, 8 feet away, in the open, bluetooth fails to connect, requiring several retries. Its bloated with useless pitches. Im sure it will start interrupting my cooking and monitoring with important Google adserving in the next spin, and pushing Disney+, too.Version: 1.1.3
✓ Worst app I’ve used in a long timeUpdated firmware. Was able to connect and much better experience. This is not ready to be released. Just a horrible experience. Every time I open the app “A server error occurred”. Finally after restarting the app 30 times I was able to add a grill but connecting….no go. Said bluetooth was connected and then tried Wi-Fi but was unable to connect. Just bad. I’ll try again in a month or 2. ✓ Not working rightSince downloading this new app an doing the “update” on my pitboss smoker, i am having a contant issue with the smoker dropping temp: it will maintain 130/s setting to a tee, yet when i ame ready to crank it up to cooking temp, the minute i set it to the higher temp, it will drop from 130 to as low as 114 and then smoke like a train. It will take a while before it foes back up. I cant express enough that i NEVER had that issue with the original software / app. It has done this the last 8 times i used it. Please looked into this. A friend if mine has the same smoker and is having the same issue as well so this is not pellet related or one off issue. We both run pit boss pellets too..Version: 1.0.3

✓ Yes, it really is this badI bought my grill a month ago. when i read the reviews on the app, i thought: these people must be doing something wrong. Boy was i ever wrong. First off, i have had 5g internet for 3 years. Why are they using 2.4 ghz? to show you how bad this is, the only way i can connect to bluetooth is to be within 6 feet of the grill. After setting up a 2.4 wifi, it loses the bluetooth trying to connect to it. i am in my kitchen, 10 feet from my modem and about 7 feet from the grill. this is a deal breaker. i have 2 more days to return the grill. Since nobody in customer support will ever call you back, i suggest everyone return them and maybe they will get the message. This is useless if you must go outside continually to check the temp. ✓ Pit boss grill appI have been very happy with my PitBoss grill…..but I had to swap out PID unit which would be different from what I had it set for originally……but I swapped to the new unit and tried it out with using just the controller and it worked great……but then I tried the app to set it up……there are no instructions anywhere…..the app would not let me update the existing grill to connect……then I tried to add a grill…….it wouldn’t connect……I deleted the new grill since it didn’t work…..the existing grill won’t let me edit but will connect but when you go in to connect the grill picture is flashing and to connect you have to time the connect input button with the silly flashing…..once you get in it works I think……afraid to use this junk app so it doesn’t mess up my controller……I will say that it worked fine with the original controller and setup……if I could delete the grill I have and start fresh I’m sure it would work great but I cannot delet the current grill!!!!! ✓ New app is much better, but it killed the Alexa Integration!I was excited to see an app update today from the SmokeIT to PitBoss App. Grill did a firmware update, I like the new app. Other than it forced me to make a new password (this is important later). Now Alexa tells me the grill is at 180 when it is smoking at 230, I do not believe it was connected at all. It had a very bad setup of telling me the last temp when it was powered off. So I think this is still reading the last value it read before the app and firmware were updated. I have disabled the skill and removed the grill and probes from the Alexa app. Then Enabled the app..... and the only password that will work to enable it is the original password. This tells me that their old app used a different authentication method than what the new app is using. That is fine, but not if the Alexa skill is still pointing to the old user repository. 5 min of testing should have proven this and so I am left to think this was known and they pushed it out early knowing this was broken. This was a MAIN reason I bought this grill, I wanted an app and the Alexa integration. I have 20 days to return the grill and will if this is not working by then. Not meant as a threat, just to point out it is important to me. Happy to update this when the Alexa integration is back..Version: 1.0
✓ Slow and often unresponsiveI had smoke it and now the pit boss app. Neither is good at what they do which is sad since they only have one job to do. The pit boss app is very slow and often times unresponsive. It can take me 5 minutes or more just to launch the app and select my smoker. Other major issue (at least in my opinion) is I am unable to reset up the wifi on the unit without going through the entire setup process. I shouldn’t have to reset up the entire smoker just to change the wifi name and password. I tried submitting this recommendation, surprise surprise I can’t find any location to be able to do so. ✓ App temp settings uselessThe smoke it app worked fine, and I do like the upgrades for the new app like the trending graphs and saved cooks. But, temp settings are in increments of 10’s? All recipes, even pitboss ones show typical 225 degrees or variations where it’s 275 etc (a middle setting between 10’s). If I set it manually on grill the app overwrites it. So then I have to balance it between 220 and 230. I haven’t had too many other issues like I have read but one other frustrating one is that when my set probe temp is approaching my grill setting disconnects and goes back to 180. An overnight brisket is hard to manage when this happens and you try to catch a few zzz’s. No alert for it doing this. The smoke it app may not have had the bells and whistles but it did reliably work and you had flex in temp setting. This app needs a revision fast!.Version: 1.1.4
✓ Didn’t believe bad reviews. Was I ever wrong!I read most of the reviews for this prior to installation. I paid special attention to the negative feedback. I couldn’t believe that an app made by a company for their own product could perform so terribly. The truth is, this app is even worse than described by its detractors. As an app, it doesn’t offer that much in terms of functionality. The only reason I downloaded it was to monitor the temp of my meats with my phone. This sorry app won’t even detect the smoker so the entire thing is useless to me. Do yourself a favor and get a meat probe that has Bluetooth capability. You’ll be far happier. ✓ Smoke it works, this doesntI open my smoke it app and get a note from you inept’s that says we are moving to the best new app called ‘pit boss’. So i get the app, when i open it it says ‘lets find your grill’. This app doesn't have a button to select Louisiana grill. The app will not link up through blue tooth to a Louisiana grill. So when it fails to link it says the grill maybe already added. Ok so i delete it from the phone. Nope that didn't work. Thanks for the new app that doesn’t work and for wasting my time. ✓ Big ProblemsEvery since this app came out it’s not uncommon for me get alerts from someone else’s PitBoss! Prior to June 1st, I was living in Georgia and now I’m living in North Carolina with a different internet provider , I’m still having this problem! Not only that I’m getting alerts from someone else’s smoker, I’m able to adjust their temps and even power their smoker off! I’m scared to use my smoker for anything overnight or unattended for anytime because, if I’m able to manipulate someone else’s smoker there’s no guarantee that it won’t happen to mine. I have uninstalled the app and reinstalled nothing has changed. I have powered their smoker off a couple of times and sent small messages through the name my cook to alert them of this happening. ✓ Worked for a short timeYou get a grill/smoker like this and you can watch the temps of the smoker and internal temps of your meat on your phone. Unfortunately the app is now not recognizing that the smoker is on and will not connect. The smoker does great but it is not connecting either Bluetooth or WiFi. I was smoking some tri-tip but good thing I have a thermoPro so I can watch the internal temp of the meat along with the internal temp of the smoker. It’s to bad this app and the smoker are not connecting. I was looking at buying a second pellet smoker but if this doesn’t work I may have to look at other brands as why pay for a feature if it doesn’t work. ✓ Not a good appChanged to the Pitboss app because I had to. This app is terrible. I can stand right next to my smoker and cannot get the app to connect to the smoker via Bluetooth, however, the Home Screen indicates that I am connected. I have been able a few times to get it connected, but as soon as I move more than 10 feet away it drops the connection. This is unsatisfactory. What’s even worse is I can’t get the app to connect to wifi. It just won’t connect. When trying to set up wifi connection, I get a message saying it can’t connect to Bluetooth, not “can’t connect to wifi” but bluetooth. Now, I’m not a genius with this, but this app is supposed to be able to go between the two. Can’t do that if it can’t connect or stay connected to either. Basically, it’s a useless app, it provides no value other than me getting exercise going outside to check on the temp. I’d rather just have stayed with the SMOKEIT app..Version: 1.0.3
✓ This New app is uselessWent to open my smokeit app and was notified to install this, so I did. Had to create a new account, no big deal. Went to add my smoker, it would connect Bluetooth but not wifi (yes using 2.4g). When I tried to connect to the smoker it would not. I Then loaded the app on my iPhone and it continually told me my account did not exist. Went back to my original device I installed the app on, logged out, tried logging back in and it told me it couldn’t find my account. Tried to reset my password and it told me too many attempts on the first try. Again, useless app now. Reverting to my inkbird so I can at least monitor temps. I purchased my pit boss last year because of the ability to remotely monitor and control my device. Now it’s no better than most others out there..Version: 1.0
✓ Works good enough to keep usingMy Pit Boss doesn’t have the Bluetooth/wifi connection feature so I can’t speak on the apps ability and reliability for that function, but I use the app all the time for shopping and recipes. Shopping it seems like everything is fine. Filters stuff out and categorized nicely. The recipe section is where it gets a little glitchy. For some reason it gets more and more glitchy the longer you use the app. Closing it out completely kinda resets it. Filters start to not work, many many many many repeat recipes, some even next to each other. Some recipes are incomplete or have typos in them. Searching specific recipes that you know are there don’t end up showing in the results. But like the title says, it works good enough to keep using it. I really do like the feature of favoriting recipes so you can go right to them..Version: 1.1.3

✓ GarbageWent to smoke a Pork shoulder last night and downloaded/set up the new pit boss app. Wondering if they were making a new app to run from the atrocity of the SmokeIT app. It seems that they’ve made another terrible app. I set my pitboss to 230degrees. I last checked it at 1:30am, wake up at 7 am and at some point it decided to go back down to smoke mode in the night. Guess I’ll continue to have to get up every hour on the hour. Not to reload wood chips, but to make sure the garbage technology keeps performing correctly. Update: App ended up dropping the smoker temp down to ‘smoke’ 4 different times throughout the cook process. Completely defeats the purpose of having a monitoring app. If I could send my grill back, I would. Very angry. Also, the Bluetooth cuts out your music every time you go to the app and app doesn’t have many of the previous features. Doesn’t seem like an improvement at all..Version: 1.0
✓ Keeps Getting Worse (Updated 12/23)It started out bad, but every update it’s gotten worse. Not sure how that is even possible. Since the last update I can no longer connect via bluetooth or wifi making the app completely useless. (I’m wishing I gone with the big named competitor.) The bluetooth connection cycles in and out, wifi says it connects but the open the control you grill and its gone. Very disappointed considering I bought this only 4 months ago. I did the uninstall/ reinstall thing it was no help. I even deleted my account and setup a new one, no help at all. UPDATE: From 1 star to 3 stars. Much better than before. Still has a couple issues. ✓ App and AdsThe app is so-so, it’s sluggish and buggy; for the most part I can see what I need to and control what I need to. I spent $800 on my grill with the app being an added benefit. I did not however realize that my $800 purchase also included advertisements front and center when I open the app. I paid for this functionality, it does not give you license to advertise to me, track me, or sell my information (if doing so). The notion of the grill being cloud connected is weird too. Many companies, when a change of leadership occurs, seem to think they can completely change the agreement and the way things operate in our own homes, with something WE spent good money on. ✓ Single worst piece of technology I’ve ever ownedI’m a pretty forgiving guy. This is the single worst piece of technology I’ve ever owned in my entire life. I’m a software engineer, I work in tech, and I worked in IT before that, and then before that I was an A/V installer. This app in the smart grill is terrible. There’s no way around it I never write reviews. I wanted to give it a try and give to Pitboss the benefit of the doubt. After numerous attempts, a painful set a process and multiple calls to tech support. All I was told was just to keep re-trying to get the app to connect to Wi-Fi. There is no answer no rhyme, no reason, just keep trying. Do you want me to tell you buying something having a do that is terrible. I’m almost tempted to sue for false advertising, because this product does not work and will not work. Pit boss, if you have a solution, let me know.
