✓ No more access to Telegraph or IndependentAs I understand it the Daily Telegraph and Independent asked Stand Alone to refrain from making their puzzles available in this app. Given that use of this app did not preclude the necessity for a subscription to the Telegraph and their total lack of support for iOS I find this a prime example of a dog in the manger attitude. Time to switch to the Times. You can get the Telegraph crossword to run in the Puffin browser but it is messy by comparison. ✓ Problem with bluetooth keyboardsThere is a really old bug when multitasking and switching apps causes bluetooth keyboards to stop working with this app. The current workaround is to leave the current puzzle and re-select it from the menu but you have to repeat this every time you switch app or restart crosswords. It would also be nice if the on-screen keyboard disappeared for people with peripheral keyboards too as is common in other apps :) Other than this one of my favourite apps!.Version: 2.55
✓ Great!I was feeling like a dud doing crosswords at morning tea with my colleagues. Pretty bad for an English teacher. Thought I'd find a crossword app to improve my skills and am really happy with this. New crosswords download every day and there's a great variety. I also really like the 'clues' feature as I probably wouldn't solve many without them - not that they're all hard, but that I am a bit thick! Only thing I don't like is that sometimes the answer is more than one word and the crossword doesn't tell you that. As some crosswords do show when there's multiple words, I'm guessing that problem is not with the makers of the app but of the crossword. Names of those with fastest times appear when you've solved a puzzle (verifying how slow I am!) which is a great incentive to keep playing and improve. Actually quite addictive!.Version: 2.23

✓ Very very good, almost superb!It took me a while to purchase this app as I was a bit put off by the heavy price tag. However when you put it into context, £6 isn't so bad when you consider that you can then download numerous free crosswords everyday thereafter. For your money you also get a pretty accomplished app. The various ways to view the clues and puzzle, aswell as the facility to use the Internet to help solve clues, and find the meaning of answers is both useful and informative. ✓ Comparison with 2 acrossI've used both quite a bit and I give the (very) slight nod to crosswords because I find the interface a bit quicker and easier, especially if you are a crosswords novice like me and prefer the cheat option turned on. You get immediate feedback if a letter is wrong. I also prefer the integrated keypad as having to call it up each time on 2 across is tedious. I should note that my fingers are fairly small so the smaller keypad that is always visible in crosswords is manageable. However navigation is easier on 2 across, and it's interface is more polished. It just requires more key presses. Puzzle selection on 2 across is superior, although I may not yet know how to download alternatives to the 5 or so that are available on a given day. In short, both are quite good and very fun which is the object after all. If you are like me: employed and thoroughly disgusted with all the losers who complain about spending the equivalent of a couple of Red Bulls or whatever makes them tick, buy them both and enjoy!.Version: 0

✓ Great for the tech-savvy word loverI absolutely love this app. If I have spare moments (such as waiting for someone, etc.), it's the perfect time waster, and I can close it suddenly without having to save or anything. The price is certainly something to remark upon, but I've found the app to be worth the $9.99; it downloads puzzles for you from a multitude of newspapers from all over (think of how much that would cost normally!) and you can customize which ones you want and which ones you don't. Straightforward, easy to use, nicely designed. Good job guys! The only thing that is bothering me is the move of the toolbar from the top of the screen to the bottom, beneath the keyboard. I'm sure there's a legitimate reason for the move, it's just that I'm used to typing in every other app, like SMS or email, but I keep hitting the toolbar when I type in Crosswords because of muscle memory. I know the app should stay relatively uniform across users, and I have no experience with Objective-C, but maybe there could be an option within Preferences to have the toolbar be on top? ✓ Good AppI use this almost daily. The one issue I have are the occasional puzzles where there are apparently several letters in one box as part of the solution. There’s no way to enter that, so there’s no way to solve the puzzle. ✓ External sourcesI have had no problems at all in downloading external sources in version 2.0.3, though I don't use subscription services. I download more crosswords in a day than I can do, so now have a backlog of 100+ crosswords: I would have more again if I downloaded from all the providers. It's simply not the case that you're limited to the set of sample crosswords that come with the software. I've taken off one star compared to my previous review specifically for the iPad version. It's great and everything, but having to press and hold on a letter square to call up the hints dialogue is a pain. ✓ Great time passerAfter cutting my teeth on Crosswords Light, I bought the full game. Not sure what the difference is between buying this and upgrading Crosswords Light with an in-app purchase. Likely just the convenience. I like the interface (make sure you turn on the setting that moves the INFO, CLUES, etc. buttons to the top instead of the bottom) and there is a massive variety of puzzles to choose from, including cryptics which I try my hand at occasionally when I need to be humbled. Some quirks the prevent a perfect rating: - Some UI jumps when I go to the puzzle listing screen. Lasts about a second before it settles in - Sometimes have to be pretty determined when I need to switch from the across to the down clue on the grid (or vice versa). I have to press a square a couple of times before it takes, it seems. - Wish it would remember my zoom level between puzzles. - Would like to be able to turn on “highlight incorrect letters” on a puzzle-by-puzzle basis.. (As far as I can tell this is different than showing the incorrect letters AFTER the puzzle is done.) All that said, I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t, by a wide margin, the most used app on my phone. And that’s including the actual phone function itself..Version: 2.69

✓ Still the same problemsIt's definitely the very best Crossword app that I've found in the 4 years that I've had an iPad, iPhone, etc. much better than the New York Times crossword app; which is a paid app. The only improvement that I would like to see is the addition of more of the more difficult/bigger puzzles like the one they do carry "Premier Crosswords". The easier puzzles they have hear tend to use the same clues/answers over & over so that there is very little challenge for your brain. ✓ I love this app, but...This is an addendum to my previous review. Everything I say below is still true. The only problem is that I only do one regular crossword (the NYT). All but one of the cryptic crosswords is missing now and there is still no way to get the London Times even though I am a subscriber. I did not use this app on my iPod touch, but when I got my iPad I tried it out and fell in love with it. I mainly do cryptic crosswords and there is a great variety available. I have a London Times subscription but that is not available in any app including this one, but my NY Times subscription works fine and this app is my medium of choice for doing it. I can't believe how much fun it is to use an iPad. I am only using my MacBook Pro now for real work. With the update to the keyboard the app is even better. I would like to see a key to make the keyboard disappear though on the crossword keyboard. Maybe put it on the second keyboard that comes up when the shift key is pressed..Version: 2.23

✓ Excellent, Flexible, Challenging Crossword AppCrosswords allows you to challenge yourself at whatever level you want, offering everything from very simple puzzles to "oh heavens what have I gotten myself into" difficult puzzles. It offers many, many sources of puzzles, as well. There have been times when I have felt "oh heavens!" With even "quick" puzzles, but that's kind of why I do crosswords... But fortunately for me, when I've wound up with words that fit the clue but don't fit together, Crosswords has options for identifying my errors. NOT fixing them, just pointing them out and erasing them. And when the app "erases" an erroneous letter, the space is left "smudged," as if I'd actually erased a penciled-in letter. There are other cross word games here on iTunes, but they do not hold a torch to this one. For those of you obsessed with function lists this application would look very much the same as 2 Across, and therefore it may not be apparent why one charges more than the other. The answer lies in the user interface my friend. It is the myriad of little things that make this an easier application to use on a daily basis. I have tried both applications and this one came out on top by far. So after three weeks I made my choice and ended up paying the extra money for crosswords because it is worth it. ✓ Almost perfectThis app gets a good hour to two of use a day - by far the most use of any app besides browsing that I make. Well worth the money. The ability to get my Telegraph subscription alongside the Guardian and Independent cryptics is great and is saving me reams of paper. The only downside is that I can't scribble notes and anagrams (in the traditional circle) against each clue and the iPad looks quite bad covered in permanent marker; to be fair this is being looked at to one degree or another. I liked the interface of Crosswords much better and found it easier to use. The problem with any crossword app is that there's a lot of information to deal with in a small amount of space, and I think the developer of Crosswords has struck a good balance between showing the clues and showing the puzzle itself. I really like the "Clues" view, which shows just a list of the clues and the letters you have filled in for each; sometimes seeing the clue and the letters in a different visual context is all I need to be able to figure it out. ✓ Great implementation of the best crossword software for mobile devicesI've been using the Palm version of this software for some time and when I bought an iPhone I thought I would have to say goodbye to it - but here it is! And even better. If you're a fan of cryptic crosswords then the current available puzzles are not for you, (I think they are working on it) but if you like a quick crossword to do on the train or between meetings, these are ideal. They are US puzzles though, so you do need to get used to the way they use multiple words and real names as answers. You also have to get used to the amazing way that the Americans just make up word endings - no wonder Bush speaks that way! But these are only minor issues for me (and I've learnt a fair bit about the USA too!). For the price it's a bargain - offering you an endless supply of puzzles in a neat package..Version: 0

However, having paid the price, am regretting it as I'm unable to download any of the puzzles. I have contacted the developers - let's see how long it takes them to sort it out... ✓ A great alternative to paper...I started by downloading the free 'light' version of this app - an excellent intro, with lots of really good puzzles. The interface is very intuitive, and well executed, and I've enjoyed it well enough to pop the ten bucks for the full version here, and consider it to be a bargain. I'd recommend it to anyone. That said, there are a few minor flaws. First, when trying to select a specific block to put a letter into, particularly in the top row of the puzzle, it can be tricky not to hit one of the menu items by mistake - countless times I've tried to select a square and hit the 'list', 'clues' or 'info' buttons instead. Second, and perhaps more troubling, is that the program is a bit crash prone. Oddly, I didn't see any crashes for the first fifteen or twenty puzzles in the free version - but since then, both the free and full versions have been going down periodically. The crashes are little more than an annoyance - nothing is lost, but it's a nuisance having to relaunch the app. The part that is disturbing is that the frequency of the crashes seems to be increasing - you can count on between one and three crashes per puzzle. I hope that it won't get worse. Other than that, I love this app - I've always been addicted to crossword puzzles, and this is a great way to have plenty to fill idle time..Version: 0

✓ A quality program by solid developersI'm not much of a crossword puzzle fan, but I grabbed this after seeing a presentation by the developer on the amount of thought they put into the interface. That bodes well for future versions of the application. I had to read through the introductory text to understand the controls, but once I did I found them intuitive and responsive. Now, I started with the 1.1 version, so I can't comment on the interface speed of the original version, but this seems very smooth to me. I also like the layout and the variation in information presented in the horizontal format vs. the vertical. Crossword puzzles are a natural fit for the iPhone, given the large touch interface and always-on networking, and this application fulfills that potential. While there are cheaper alternatives out there, is $10 really too much for people to pay for a quality game that you can keep on playing for a while to come?.Version: 0

When solving cryptics I like to write the clue letters backwards with consonants on one line, vowels below. ✓ Excellent on the iPadI enjoy using the app and do two or three crosswords a day, but I can't give it five for a few reasons: 1. Multi-word answers don't show which clue numbers they relate to. So in the clues it will say 3.See 17. But under clue 17 it won't show 17&3 and the cursor won't move across to answer three automatically. Small but irritating. 2. As a cryptic newbie it would be nice to see the UK Telegraph in the free list. 4. Sometimes jumps to the next unanswered clue, other times jumps to an answered one. ✓ Great Game: One WarningThis is a really good application, it is almost as good as doing crosswords on my laptop, the size is a bit of an issue, but not the fault of the application. HOWEVER, I want to warn other users of an issue I ran up against. I'm going on a long overseas plane trip and was downloading puzzles for the flights. I don't know how many puzzles I downloaded; my guess is somewhere between 100 and 150. When I left the download mode, the game crashed and I could never get it to load again - it kept crashing. I eventually reset my iphone, deleted the game out of my iTunes folder, and then redownloaded the game to iTunes and resynced my iphone - really a nuisance. So if there is a limit to the number of puzzles that can be stored, it would be great if the developers would either disallow more downloads, or at least have the information somewhere about what that ballpark number is. I loved crosswords as a kid (did American-style growing up), got bored with them, turned to other puzzles, and by accident discovered British-style cryptic crosswords in a puzzle book. They really make you use your noodle, as Dirk Niblick would say! I love that this app gives you both types. It has reignited my love for American-styles, and challenges me with cryptics. The layout and interface is fabulous. I appreciate that I can lock it into a view so that it doesn't change whilst lying on my side playing this flippin' addictive game in bed. My only complaint is that there seem to be only two zoom levels -- all the way in, and all the way out. I'm getting old...almost 30...my eyesight fails me at times, but not so that I want it zoomed in all the way. Still, a minor quibble for such a wonderful game that I play Every Day. Worth it. Buy it. ✓ Something necessary that they do NOT mentionI purchased Crosswords for the iTouch 2G based on the reviews here. The fact that you can continue to get more puzzles for free was an attractive feature. However, there is an important limitation that is not mentioned in they ad and specs which, if it had been mentioned, would have caused me to pass this by. In order to get more puzzles, you MUST have some sort of wireless connection available. For an iPhone, that is not a problem since that is its central function, wireless communication. However, this is not necessarily true for the iTouch. The iTouch can work just fine without a Wifi access, and WiFi is not central to its function at all. And if the person only has one computer, there is no reason why he or she would need a wireless setup. While this a nice app for those that enjoy crosswords, the fact that they do not tell you in the add that a WiFi access is needed for the iTouch is a strong negative influence on my rating, since it would have caused me to avoid buying it due to the lack of a wireless router in my home..Version: 0
✓ Very enjoyable appI have been using this app on my iPhone, and now on my iPad. I really like the interface, particularly on the iPad where the larger screen makes the Programme really enjoyable to use. The iPad version has slightly different behaviour un starting from the phone version - it goes straight to a puzzle. Personally I prefer to see the list of puzzles downloaded first but it is a minor niggle in a very good app. Other reviewers have had problems downloading crosswords and some suggest that the crosswords are not from e sources advertised. I have had no problem downloading non-premium content. I haven't checked the crosswords against the printed versions but the difference in character and style between different providers leads me to believe that it is unlikely that the app author is just writing crosswords and pretending they are from the sources advertised. Download and enjoy this app, and hopefully the author will continue to improve it..Version: 0
