Calorie Counter - MyNetDiary for Negative User Reviews

Desperately needs metric conversionThis is a great app but obviously focussed on the American market. As an Aussie I find the lack of metric conversion in the recipes in the premium app a major problem. America also has a different way of measuring blood sugar levels which makes it useless for Aussie diabetics trying to track their blood sugar level through the dashboard. There might be a way of changing the settings in the app but it is not obvious if the option exists. If you are going to charge a premium subscription for the premium app then it needs to be easier to be more user friendly for users from other countries that use metric measurements. I won’t be renewing the premium app at this point..Version: 7.85

Frustrating! So far, I am finding this app very easy to use and follow. It is teaching me about portion sizing and the calories used during so many activities, even the most mundane, like putting the washing out! I don’t like weighing my food, but have actually enjoyed weighing my portions! My main ‘bugbear’, is that often when I start tracking my walk and lock the screen, I need to look at something else on my phone. Then I realise that for some reason, the tracker has turned itself off and I have lost that whole walk!! I don’t know why or when it happened, so It would be useful if you could still use the app and other things, whilst it’s logging your exercise. If you lock the screen, then it should stay locked. If, for some reason, the exercise tracker stops, it should automatically log what you had done up to the point that it stops. A long-winded explanation, I know... I’m just hoping it makes sense!!.Version: 8.5

Used to be good.Charts no longer useful. After about 6 years of using this app, we can’t pinch/zoom the charts anymore. This was the one feature that made this app better than other diet trackers..Version: 7.92

Good but….Great app lots of info but the errors in food then submitting changes and nothing changes..Version: 8.96

Ok I guessThis app could be really good but a lot of the foods you scan end up showing up in the data base but with different nutritional information which total defeats the purpose of using this app. You never really know if you’re consuming the correct amount of micros unfortunately. Even when you try sending photos and the correct nutritional information, sometimes they don’t correct it. I also noticed that it won’t show you the sugar content (unless you pay for premium of course). It’s a good thing they care about your health rather than data collecting (and probably selling it) 😉 This app could be so much better but I think I’ll switch to MyfitnessPal instead. The reviews are fantastic..Version: 8.76

Shaming, but the free version works pretty wellThere’s this thing I don’t understand about diet apps, which is that they all seem to think that shaming their users is a good idea. The way they do that is that when you need to enter a number of calories rather than entering specific foods, they mark the entry with a warning type icon. With MyNetDiary, the first time in a day that you put in a number of calories rather than a food, you get a fat globule icon. The second time, you get a fire icon. I rely on a calorie counting app to accurately count calories. I don’t need the app to shake a finger at me or put me down. If I can look at the label of a can of soup and see how many calories it is and put those in quickly, rather than searching for the particular brand, which may not be in the database, I really would like to be able to just enter the calories without being shamed. So while I’m pleased that the free version of this app works fairly well, despite requiring regular refusals of the upgrade option, my overall experience of the app is neutral, and not particularly motivating..Version: 8.43

Keeps me honestI have lost 39 pounds since I started using this app. I like that I can log in my activity. Tracking foods is easy. I like all the charts & helpful hints. I have health issues & will go back to the gym eventually. But I log all my housework & animal chores. It all adds up. If you eat over your calories do a little physical labor to keep you on target. I have a long term goal & it will take me a year to reach it. My health issues complicate matters but this app keeps me focused & positive. There are also chat groups to encourage one another. No meetings or rigorous exercise required. You just eat less & move more. This app is fun & easy. You can store your favorite foods to make your charting easier. What are you waiting for? Try it! Addendum 3/4/19. I went off program for surgery, rehab from it & for 2018 holidays until today. I’m so disappointed to see that macronutrients & the breakdown of the fats, carbohydrates & protein percentages that are counted as you add your food intake are now gone from the free app. Now you have to pay $8.99 per month to get this additional information. I’ve referred a lot of people to this app but now they will learn what I told them was free is no longer available. Basically now the app just counts your calories. I will purchase the app because I need to get back on track & reach my goal. So I changed my rating from 5 star to 2. It works but now you pay for it..Version: 6.88

Not accurateI hadn’t logged my weight and it said i gained 15 lbs in two week while not even eating 500 calories per day..Version: 8.91

Great but too expensiveThis app is amazing but I refuse to pay $85/year or $12/month to keep track of what I'm eating and the calories I'm burning now if this was a 1 time fee of like $30 ok or even $1-$2/month if that was the case I would give it 5 stars.Version: 5.45

Not a fan of the updated chartI liked this app a lot and the only thing preventing a 5 star review is the updated chart. The old chart had a trend line which showed your goal weight from your most recent fresh start, and this allowed you to easily visualise your actual progress against your goal (which was very useful). The new chart has removed this for some reason. It also draws a trend line between the two most recent “peaks”, but this really isn’t useful because (a) the new chart has also smoothed the peaks to such an extent that they almost mirror the trendline anyway (making it redundant), and (b) it only draws a straight line on a small portion of the chart (I.e. it doesn’t run all the way from your fresh start to your goal date). Basically some very useful and easily readable functionality has been sacrificed to make the graphic look slightly prettier. Please consider: (A) at least re-adding the goal trendline so users can track progress against their goals (which, after all, is one of the main purposes of a diet app); and (B) either removing the new trendline or making it run from your fresh start to your estimated finish date, because at the moment it is just a line segment that offers no value and clutters up the chart. Thanks for the great app!.Version: 8.51

Good but weekly analysis needs workI really like this app - good interface, easy to use. The weekly plan review needs some work by the app developers though. What it says sometimes bears no reference to what I’ve entered for each day. For example: my weekly review tells me I’ve burnt an average of 152 calories per day in the past seven days. However in the past seven days I’ve burnt at least 600 a day (per smart watch, which I have linked to the daily app inputs). Impossible for this to average at 152! Something not quite computing there, which is a shame because it’s one of the areas I most wanted when I upgraded to the premium version of the app..Version: 7.84

Apps gone massively down hill recentlyI used to love this app and swore by it for years over all other apps I’ve tried. But, lately it’s gone a bit weird and constantly changes and messes up the new foods I enter and alters the portion sizes and does not allow me to enter the grams I have eaten, only 1 or 1/2 a packet. I don’t eat half the packet, hence why when I log new foods I enter the nutritional information that is available on the packets in grams and send the photos of the packet which clearly lists the grams. But still it scraps these and only allows me to select 1/2 or 1/3 ect of the pack. This is not accurate. Why change it? Especially after I take the time to enter and photo the information IN GRAMS. I then select the update food item and try and re-entire the gram information but again it just deletes it and goes back to fractions. Currently looking for a different version of a calorie tracking app that doesn’t override my entries and allows me to track my food accurately, in grams, not guessing fractions or avoiding that food..Version: 7.81

Good, with a massive problem. It won’t import energy expenditure from Apple HealthThis is generally an excellent tool both in the app and the desktop web version. But as I just discovered, it CANNOT import expended energy from Apple Health. Those options are simply not available to select for sync. There are some others as well, like flights of stairs. But not being able to import energy expenditure basically kills this app..Version: 8.77

Deceptive paywall— watch out for recipesCreating a recipe is free. But if you want to edit it to fix an error? That requires a paid premium account. Sneaky and deceptive. I don’t trust this company any more. I don’t mind paying for features in apps, but to put half a feature behind a paywall, WITHOUT TELLING YOU UP FRONT that editing costs money, is disrespectful to your customers. Update: you don’t have to put in the app description. Just put all the recipe functions behind the paywall, OR tell the user when they make it that it isn’t free to edit. Or put it on your website where you have literally all the room you want. These are excuses. Seriously I have been considering subscribing but as soon as you pulled this trick I realized you disrespect your customers. It crosses the line from offering added value to manipulation. It’s just skeezy and people should be warned. So don’t get up on your high horse about “language.” Treating potential customers this way is such a bad look. Responding to customer concerns by saying that my concerns are invalid is EXTREMELY bad. You literally said I was wrong in your customer support response! Meanwhile I just paid for FatSecret premium because they don’t treat me like a liar. Thanks, have a great day..Version: 8.2

Food diaryPretty good if you just want to keep track of what your eating. I don't like that your exercise is added onto your calorie intake, because it always tells me I'm not eating enough when I have. But other than that it's not bad, sometimes foods aren't on the list and especially home cooked dinners.Version: 4.63

I like it BUT there’s two issuesIf you have the premium version it was extremely frustrating for me trying to find recipes. I knew they were somewhere, but I couldn’t find them. I figured out they were under the COACH tab which in my opinion would be the last place I looked. That’s the only reason I’m removing a star from the review. I’ll add it back once I see that the recipes are on their own tab or in a more obvious place. I see that as a huge UI/UX flaw that has to have frustrated more than just me. The second issue, another reason I removed a second star. I think the monthly rate of $9.99 is a bit high. Charging people double for a monthly subscription isn’t very classy. People do not like to be forced to buy yearly subscriptions. Monthly on their mind is “safer”. In the end, you’re gonna make more money from the extra customers that sign up. Trust me on this one. Drop that down and find out for yourself. You’re only hindering sales of your app and personally I’m not so sure if I’m gonna keep this app. Pricing is a huge deal for me in regards to how companies treat their customers. Forcing a yearly subscription by charging twice the amount, I don’t know if I can get past that. I’m still on the fence about that..Version: 8.18

Waste of money and you can’t cancelThis app is the worst. It’s complicated, not helpful as a food diary and takes your money by refusing to allow you to cancel the subscription.Version: 8.17

Going against the grain I guess…I’m actually using the app to try to gain weight- I began losing weight without knowing why and I was worried about it. Turns out I wasn’t eating as much as I thought I was. I know I won’t find a lot of sympathy here, but it is a legitimate health concern. I have not found the app to be intuitive at all. How can I look up all the dates I’ve weighed myself? What if I don’t want your calculations and projections, but raw data? Creating and saving my own recipes was easy and the interface looks great. But MANY of the calories for pre-made foods I scan are different from what is on the pkg, sometimes by a lot. There is a way to send in corrections, but I don’t want to be doing that every day, sometimes multiple times a day. Most importantly, I am continuing to lose, even though I’m hitting the calorie goals the app set for me. (I’m going to make an appointment with a doctor). But it calls into question the accuracy of the whole app for me. Obviously it is helping a lot of people with weight loss, which is great. But this is just not the app for me..Version: 8.46

Good but too much effortNow I am not a lazy person but this is just too much effort for some one to loose weight. You have to enter the serving grams and oz of everything you eat. .. Digging through the bin to find the grams of those chips you ate for lunch?! Good idea though, if you are determined..Version: 0

I absolutely hate the “complete day” featureI just spent 30 minutes marking all my previous days as complete since, due to the crappy new feature, I had “review needed” on most days. This is absolutely infuriating please give us a way to opt out of this user-hostile feature. I originally gave 4 stars but temporarily changed to one star until this issue is resolved. Original review below. Original title: Great app but generic foods should have international names Original review: This app is good because are a lot of Australian brand foods such as the stuff from Woolies Coles etc. The fact you can use the camera as a barcode reader is great. The only issue is that generic (non branded) foods, can only be found by typing American names e.g. if you search Silverbeet or Capsicum you won’t get anything, you have to type “Swiss Char” and “bell peppers” or whatever it is that capsicums are called in America..Version: 8.23

Helps if you’re honestJust deducted a star since they seem to be removing features from the free version - no longer see the macro nutrient fat, carb, protein listing under the daily meals - only the summary of the day. For my needs the free version offers all I needed, I can’t justify the cost to subscribe just to see the breakdown by meal. I don’t need any of the extra features of the paid version. I got no major dietary issues to track. Been using the free version off and on for quite a while. Helps me see where I am failing as well as where I am doing well so I can make adjustments to my overall diet if necessary. Over the course of 6 decades living g with heart valve problems, I’ve learned enough to maintain a decent meal plan for my health. But it does help to honestly track meals and snacks for the visual feedback and easier calculations to control fats, carbs, etc. In general, I like the app. I would like to see two improvements - one is an option to copy meals not just from yesterday but from a drop down calendar or other selector - my daughter suggested “Lose It” and I do prefer the way it logs foods and meals for easy reference. Second, I’d like to be able to be able to export the data to csv format or excel file so I could graph values of interest such as my carbs or fats in excel so I could share the data with my doctors..Version: 7.00

Bad maths but useful nonethelessLove that you can create recipes (and now weve worked out how to share to other family members this is great!), scan barcodes, easily add your regular items not in the system, its smart crowdsourcing! Like the addition of orange days instead of just green or red because red for 2 calories over made you feel bad about it. But the maths is always wrong. It sets me a calorie deficit each day say 500, and the dashboard tells me how many i have left to eat and still reach that deficit, ie 250… so you would assume the daily deficit would be sum of those 2 numbers. But when you switch to analysis that number is out by as much as 300 calories some days! Makes it hard to be confident you are reaching those goals as you arent sure where the maths has gone wrong. Ive tried explaining to support with photos but they dont seem to understand the issue and each app update the amount it can be out changes. 50 calories isnt so bad but 300 is a lot..Version: 8.13

AaaMmmazingNo idea why this app doesnt have more reviews. I am extremely impressed.. Its one of the best apps I have ever used in all my years of having an iphone. it has everything you need for your weight loss/ fitness journey. I really cant describe it in few words- you just have to download it and see for yourself!!!!!.. All thats missing is being able to weigh myself on my ph without it breaking ... Awesome stuff!!! loooove this app.Version: 4.03

It just gets worse!I’ve been using this app for years and as such had a lot of the foods I eat stored in the app, I could start typing and it would remember them. This was perfect, nice and quick and you could enter your days meals within a few minutes. The app is now a complete joke, most of the foods I’ve spent years building up have been retired! This forces me to search or scan foods all over again and is a completely unnecessary waste of my time. The app updates just make this app more and more infuriating to use, one day last week I pretty much had to enter everything I’d eaten all over again because none of my meals were no longer in the app. I have now stopped using this and looking for a replacement. Over development and constant food retiring has ruined this app!.Version: 7.88

ConDownloaded the “free” version to try not the Premium that is £3.99 on the App Store. Opened the “free” app but it still shows billing information, monthly or annually, that you can cancel at anytime. So I continued and created my profile then guess what, the “free” version then charged me £6.99! Utter con, it’s either free to use/try for a month THEN charge or not. Having received a response from the developer, stating I didn’t have to subscribe I’m updating my review, still 1 star though. As the developer, you have a responsibility to be more open and transparent with billing options. Telling me I “didn’t have to subscribe to premium” is true, but what you haven’t stated is there is a very small grey X in the top right of the screen which isn’t obvious when first setting up the app. You have to use that otherwise the only option is to use either of the two payment options. As the developer you are misleading people! Oh, and for anyone else, contact apple as you’re able to get your money back if you also feel you’ve been conned. Search for “request a refund for apps” in support..Version: 8.26

Great app but since the most recent update…Creating a custom food entry is messed up with the calories to serving size. I created a good entry that is 70 calories for every 125ml and when I save it and I put that amount, it gives me 8750 because it is multiplying 70 by 125 instead. I’ve never had this issue before when inputting food entries..Version: 8.86

Can’t change start date without premium…Changing the start date of your weight loss journey is a basic function of a calorie tracker. Using the app is very difficult without it as if you decide to start over it affects the graphs, charts, trends, everything. Macro tracking and coaching? Fine, normal paywall stuff. But changing the start date needs to be available to free users. I ended up just deleting and redownloading the app fresh to get around it which was a pain because I lost more than just my previous weight data. Paywalling the “set a water goal” is also a weird decision but whatever. Otherwise, it’s a really visually appealing app and the visual tracking graphics are super satisfying and motivating. Everything works well, it’s incredibly detailed in its tracking, and it has tons of integrations with apple watch and other health apps. It’s my new favourite calorie tracking app, but PLEASE let us change the start date..Version: 8.89

Apple WatchWell, the Apple Watch was connected to this app at one time and then they updated their app now it no longer works on my Apple Watch the sad moment because I will not subscribe to this app regardless..Version: 8.96

Inaccurate caloriesA lot of the food has incorrect calories and makes them lower than they actually are and it’s very frustrating :( they refuse to change it too and i don’t understand why!.Version: 8.84

Wrong calories - terrible connection to GarminThis app has some great features that I love, however it’s calorie burn formula is way off. I’ve had to put the settings down to “sedentary” (I actually run over 6km a day, and walked at least another 5km) and cut my height by 20cm just to get it closer to the actual amount of calories I burn in day, otherwise it tells me I burnt about 300 calories more than what my Apple Watch activity app. I only recently discovered this difference when I put on 2 kg and could not figure out why. In summary, it’s a really bad calorie formula, so be prepared to change settings to get it closer to reality. In addition, it has a poor connection to Garmin watches. Over 12,000 steps today, and it’s still stuck on 0 steps. I’m not impressed..Version: 8.86

OkayThis is an okay app, tho it made me have an eating disorder.Version: 8.85

I want to love this app!I have tried several apps and thought that this one might be perfect for what I wanted to use the app for. I needed calorie counting and tracking of percentages of carbs, fats, proteins. I was/am looking to lose weight. I signed up and entered all the required information. I wanted to loose 10 pounds. When I looked at my calorie requirements I saw the app had me at 809 calories which I thought was odd as the other apps I tried out would never allow anything under 1200 calories. I had also been advised by a trainer that that was too low. I reached out and never got a straight answer. I was basically told it was ok. Then after alerting them the app jumped up to a required 1226 I think then that jumped up over 1300 and then all the way up to 1500. I have reached out several times as I really wanted to give them the opportunity to correct what I felt must be a glitch and I never got a solid explanation or resolution. It’s a good counter though so for a free app it’s great. I wouldn’t pay attention to the calorie requirements as I know I will not lose weight at 1300 or 1500 calories. I was willing to upgrade with it working properly however that is not the case. For what it is worth they did not ignore my questions. I think it has potential for sure. I do wish it worked better as I think it would be ideal..Version: 8.30

Privacy concernsI’ve used this app for years. Loved it. Recently I noticed the math was incorrect so I reached out to tech support. A tech was able to access my data without my prior knowledge or permission. In doing so, a glitch occurred which completely screwed up my numbers. For example, daily sodium intake was 1g. Protein was about 50g. And more. I asked him what happened and as an apology he upgraded my account without my permission. When I couldn’t get the values back to normal, I decided to just delete and reinstall. Unbeknownst to me there was an update to the software and everything I once had for free (pie chart and complete nutrient list) is now premium. I was not happy. I reached out again and the same tech responded saying he could see things were back to normal. So again he accessed my data without my permission! The reason why this is extra concerning is because I don’t have an account. So I don’t know how he’s getting into the app. Repeatedly. So I deleted it. I don’t trust it or the tech. I don’t have private data in there, but I’m worried the app may have a vulnerability of which I’m unaware. 5 stars for the app over all time but 1 star for support gets an average of 3..Version: 8.38

The previous version was betterThis one - even though I’m ticking all the boxes, it’ll still tell me, in red, “slower loss”. Even though I still have calories I could eat, and I’m still “in the green” etc. It made more sense and was simpler before the latest update..Version: 6.71
