Collins-Robert Concise for Negative User Reviews

Ne vaux pas le prixJe trouve qu’il manque beaucoup de choses.Version: 2.7

Needs some workNot bad, but not great either. Overall, it will get the job done better than the free options out there, but just barely. The app is really sluggish on the iPad 2; it can't even keep up with the slowest typer. There are a lot of words missing, and, more annoyingly, you're frequently brought to the wrong word when presented with words that have similar spellings. If they can iron out these flaw then the app wouldn't be so bad; it won't replace a higher-end dictionary, but it'll definitely get you through basic French classes..Version: 1.4.1

IMHO, it's not that great. This app is certainly not value for money. My biggest complaint is that you cannot look up conjugated verbs. Sure, you can get the conjugations for verbs - but you cannot search for them! This shortfall is appalling, given this is the most expensive electronic dictionary in the App Store by a mile, and also given the capacity of the hardware it is running on! You may as well go back to using a book..Version: 1.5.1

De la fausse représentation !Du bon marketing avec le nom Collins mais il y manque des mots aussi simples que "carob" / "caroube". Il faut trouver mieux. À ce prix-là, c'est du arnaquage..Version: 0

SpottyHaving just read the first few pages of "Une ténébreuse affaire" with this dictionary aiding me, I can report that it is almost useless for reading works written before 1900 or so. Missing: coutil, guêtre, carnier, loup-cervier, factieux, rave (meaning betterave). Coverage is spotty..Version: 2.7

Number of words too littleThere are too many words I can’t find, they need to increase the number of words. I can find more on the Larousse dictionary that is also much cheaper. For $15, they should have way more words..Version: 2.9

Very frustrating appThis is by far the most expensive app I have bought for the iPhone and pound for pound the most frustrating. I go to France maybe 5 or 6 times per year so I decided to buy it mainly for those moments in restaurants when you are looking at something on a menu and you don't know what it is. This app may be able to conjugate verbs and do all sorts of other fine things but it fails when it comes to the simple things such as translating food names. Surely this isn't a specialist requirement? I would have thought that this is a basic requirement of a dictionary (particularly an expensive one like this). As examples from a recent menu that it can't translate from French barbue (=brill) bar (=bass) Funnily enough if you go to the English dictionary and type in Bass it will show you "bar" as one option. The English dictionary doesn't even have Brill in it. So because it fails on some of the basics I am only giving it two stars. For the price I expect it to be much more detailed than it is..Version: 0

DisappointingA too concise dictionary really only suitable for beginners to intermediates. Too many words missing—for which you have to go to the free Reverso website. Also hard to get out of the verbs and back to the main dictionary..Version: 2.9

Not satisfied.I speak French fluently, but require help with unusual or technical words. Many of these words are not found, but are available on other sources. Good tool for beginners but not fir expert speakers or translators..Version: 1.3.3

BetterPros: -no need to select translation direction. Every bilingual dictionary needs this feature. -you can select which translations to copy -excellent quality translations Cons -there must be better uses for the sidebar. What a massive waste of space. -no highlighting feature. This would be great for languages such as English, which have so many possible meanings for so many words. -history and favorites should be accessible from the top bar. -no flashcards for reviewing -no audio -no paragraph translation feature (like Pons and Midori have) -no way to organize favorites into groups or export them. Other apps let you email them -no wildcard or example searches.Version: 2.3

Waste of £30I rarely use this now as it constantly gives weird responses ie English words when I’m looking for French. I’ve tried to use it but have now given up.Version: 2.9

MisleadingI carefully checked this on the developers website where it states clearly that their pro dictionaries have been updated to take advantage of the iPad. Moreover the application will detect whether it's on a iPad or iPhone and adjust accordingly. Furthermore you only have to buy it once and have it available for all mobile devices. It has not been updated for the iPad, and works as a iPhone app. This is disappointing, and the website is misleading..Version: 0

Needs to Try a Lot HarderNowadays, for this kind of money, you expect an app to be something rather special. It isn’t. Having just got back from France, I’ve lost count of the number of times I searched for French words with no luck. The dictionary simply doesn’t cover a lot of modern French idiomatic words. The (French) text to speech is a complete joke..Version: 2.7

Downgrade not upgrade!Very unhappy with this upgrade. It was good when you looked up a verb you could immediately see the present tense conjugation and the present and past participles, then just double tap for all the conjugations. That was very useful and quick - why on earth have you made it slower to get to this basic information??? I used to love this app and didn't mind how much I paid for it but it's a lot less useful now. Please rectify this immediately! I've never felt the need to comment on an 'update' before but I feel strongly that you've taken something that was mine and replaced it with this rubbish. Give me back the app I paid for. As the saying goes: if it ain't broke, don't fix it!.Version: 2.3

Handy but improvableHave been using it for years, it’s very handy, but when you’re listening to music it cuts it off when you open the app, and also crashes a lot..Version: 2.7

JekIl devrait avoir des expression ausss.Version: 2.8

For 15 pounds it could be better...I bought this dictionary only because all the other options were pretty rubbish. I find it ok- the verb conjugator in French and English is probably the best thing about it. However, I would like to be able to search by phrase and always by word. Say for example I was looking for 'to get on sb's nerves', I would have to look up 'nerve' and then scroll down until/if I found it. Rather annoying! I would also like to be able to add certain words to a list so that I can learn them later. There is a history option but this is for all the words looked up.Version: 0

App Needs Audio Pronunciations & Random Word ButtonThis dictionary app has a good intermediate vocabulary but it is yet another dead silent app. It needs the important features Audio Collin's Mini-Gem French-English (beginner's vocabulary) app has. It needs 1. audio pronunciations in French and in English that do not require internet connection, and 2. a Random Word button..Version: 0

Bloody uselessHas very few useful words. Quicker and more accurate to use Google or open a hardback copy!.Version: 2.9

Glaring ErrorI have found this app to be an excellent tool for beginning the learning of French. HOWEVER, I have come upon a glaring error in this dictionary: The negation of the past tense of the pronominal forms of the verb are all incorrect; they show ‘pas’ after verb, when it should come before the verb. I haven’t learnt enough French to be confident that there aren’t any other errors, but it’s not encouraging. The publisher needs to get onto this quickly and provide an update. Bev.Version: 2.8

Worst upgrade everI have never written a review before but was prompted to do so by this incompetent so-called "upgrade". The app was previously everything one could want from a smartphone dictionary: user friendly and intuitive to navigate, well laid out and easy to read, with clear definitions and helpful examples. I was extremely satisfied that I had received my money's worth and frequently consulted it. Now it is the complete opposite of all that. I agree with another reviewer that I would never have bought this app as it currently is and I want the old version back or my money. This has been, without doubt, a downgrade of the previous version and I am very disappointed..Version: 2.3

Inadequate!I just spent $17 for this dictionary, and within 10 minutes I've already been unable to find definitions of several words that I found with ease on the Collins dictionary site. And these weren't arcane words, but ones I had stumbled across, as an intermediate French student, in Courrier International: "mise en garde" (warning) and "bourbier" (quagmire). Until you can offer a complete dictionary similar to the one you have online, don't advertise it as such!!.Version: 2.7

Not worth itRidiculously meagre, a total let down.Version: 2.7

Terrible and annoying upgradeI loved the original app and have used it every day for several years. It was easy to access and negotiate. Very straightforward and intuitive. This version too opaque, takes too much time to use and I dont find the usage I want easily. Gender of nouns must be at the very first level!! I am devastated by the upgrade. The previous version was everything I need and I absolutely would prefer to have it back. I have several other dictionary apps that are as bad as this upgrade so am now left with a set of poor and frustrating choices. Please given us the option of choosing the previous version that we have paid for asap..Version: 2.3

Fantastic application, until the latest updateTHis was an amazing application - a great and very complete dictionary, and easy to use. BUT the latest update seems to have messed up the search history - it only stores the last two words searched. And as it's the most expensive application I've ever bought, I wouldn't expect such a mess up with an update. Re-installing the whole thing doesn't fix it, and as the search history helps me go back to words I've looked up over the day which I transfer them to my flashcards, without it the application is a lot less useful. Please help to fix this ladies and gentlemen, then you'll deserve the five star review again..Version: 0

Update is a dudIf you haven't updated, don't. If you are thinking of buying, wait. I have used this product in French language school in Paris since September. Content is fantastic. It is worth the money if you are seriously studying French. It has a fantastic dictionary with many expressions, and the conjugation tables are a huge help. Unfortunately, the latest update crashes constantly and is not worth the money until these issues are resolved..Version: 1.5

Not enough entriesI keep looking up French words that are not in the dictionary. This makes the dictionary very unsatisfactory. I had had this problem using Ultralingua dictionaries on my Mac and would not have bought this had I known it was Ultralingua (I have used the Robert-Collins for decades and find it very good: here it is seriously abridged without telling you). When the entry is there, the dictionary is fine (hence two stars instead of one). If you are at all literary, this is not the dictionary for you..Version: 2.7

Bad upgradeThis was one of the best apps around until this recent 'upgrade'. If I had known how bad the new interface was going to be I wouldn't have updated the app. Refund please!.Version: 2.3

Where are the verbs translationsYou need to be able to type in "to go" and below it it comes up "aller". Then you click on "aller" and it takes you to aller and its conjugation. A major flaw in a food app.Version: 1.5.4

Alastair AberdareToo many less common French words omitted from this dictionary!.Version: 2.9

This is a ‘pocket dictionary’, not a comprehensive oneI got this because Collins-Robert make the best bilingual dictionaries, and the paper version of this was the ‘Rolls Royce’ of its class when I was a languages student. However, don’t bother downloading this if you want anything other than basic words or phrases. I was composing an email to my dentist and needed the French for root canal. Not there, under ‘root’ or ‘canal’. Failed its first test. If there was a more expensive app that did the job of the best French/English dictionary, I’d probably buy it. But there isn’t one. Wasted opportunity. Apparently print media still need to get with the 21st century..Version: 2.9

Night mode!It needs night mode!.Version: 2.9

Great but why are there so few words translated ?This dictionary is a must have for French-English. But there are some serious improvements needed: 1. The number of words translated is clearly not enough. For the cost of this electronic dictionary, I don't see why we should have so few words. 2. The search function is very weak (have a look at the Robert-Zanichelli in French-Italian for example, much better).Version: 2.8

Mrs Dellas MacdougallI have recently updated my Collins English/French dictionary and I am extremely disappointed with the result. The verb conjugation particularly, is like a dog's dinner (please excuse the expression, but I am so frustrated). Instead of being able to print out a page of verb conjugation which is in neat precise columns, it is a mess, taking over 2 pages and almost incomprehensible.! My eyes have to go everywhere trying to follow what was a simple system. Please can I have the old version back as I am on the point of ditching your version completely and looking at another simpler, more explicit dictionary. I have been studying French for three years and found the old version of your dictionary so helpful, and just purchased a new Wifi printer with the intention of printing off the page of verb conjugation as required..Version: 2.3

Waste of moneyIt is claimed to be able to tap on in the browser but not working. Just waste of money!.Version: 2.4.2

A rip offI paid a lot of money for this only to find a meagre vocabulary. I am disgusted with Collins.Version: 2.7

Great in theory, disappointing in real situationsHaving just spend some time using this expensive app in France, I am deeply disappointed to report that it let me down more times than it helped. For example, the dictionary fails to translate 'canules', 'brick' (both found on a restaurant menu) and 'chais' into English, and 'sloth' into French. The dictionary also fails with 'déballage': fine if you know it's part of déballer, but not otherwise. Similarly, the dictionary can decline 'canuler', but not define it. This is not a product worthy of Collins or the adjective 'Pro'..Version: 0

Not workingI downloaded the latest version and I can't use the app anymore! It just freezes!!!.Version: 1.5.3

Misadvertised and buggyOnly has 45000 entries! Vs the unabridged Collins which should have over 800,000. This is bad app dressed up with a premium price. By comparison, the Collins pocket dictionary has 80,000 real entries, not just translations! Collin's should be ashamed of associating with this app. To top it all off, it's extremely crash prone and even has the honour of being the first app to cause a kernel panic on my iPad. Avoid like the plague, there are better and cheaper dictionary apps..Version: 1.5.1

A mixed bagMy intentions in buying this app was to have an aid in my study of French, as I am presently taking French in school. What I got was an excellent, albeit cumbersome and somewhat lacking resource. First of all, this is a powerful app and I look forward to using it when I forget a conjugation or some vocabulary, but where this app is majorly lacking is the absence of a translator or something to help in basic sentence structure. Sentences are formed slightly differenly in Fench than they are in English and it would be nice to have something to display the proper way to form a sentance. I wouldn't even mind if it was simply a tool where you could write (and have it correct you) in French and then spits it back out in English or correct French. For a $25 app, I would've hoped it would had something to actually form sentences. So, would I recommend this? Yes, but only if you know how Fench is structured already or you just need a powerful reference tool; don't buy it If you're starting w/ the language..Version: 0

They updated this app and ruined it; Do not waste your moneyThis was a great app until they updated it. They changed everything that made it awesome and easy to use. Tasks in the previous version, which were repetitive for you, now zero themselves out and you have to start from the beginning and go through each step every time you want to conjugate a verb or some other task. I wish I had known how bad they ruined this once truly awesome program, I would have never updated it. BEWARE, this 4 1/2 star rating you see, it is for the old version, not this junk. Do not waste your money..Version: 0

Not worth itHelps with pronunciation? They’re only phonetic s no aural aide. Detailed definitions are one word i’d like my money back if I can get it. Simple dissatisfaction does not qualify I guess...Version: 2.8

Decent, but probably not worth your moneyThis version compares pretty well to the abridged version of the Collins, but is a long ways from the unabridged version, whose price it more closely reflects. For those serious about French, the unabridged paper version is much better for your money, as is a cheap iPhone French-English dictionary. Also, an irritating bug makes it difficult to see any pronominal verbs, and although they informed me several months ago that this issue was to be rectified in a forthcoming version, there have been no changes. Altogether, it seems as if Ultralingua isn't going to update what is currently a mediocre, buggy dictionary..Version: 0

Collins updated 12 Oct 2011Ok, but no more than just ok. Too Manu words are missing. Il manque trop de mots..Version: 1.4.3

Dissapppointed with upgradeI am not happy with this upgraded version. It also seems to have fewer words than my previous version had. It is notably slower than before and I am not a big fan of the "new" user interface format. Would also like to have some basic grammar rules and usage included..Version: 2.3

The content is great but this is the same as UltralinguaNice for you to sell this as two different Apps - its described differently but this Collins App is the same as the Ultralingua app. Same authors, same copyright. Different description but the same thing when you run it. Nice that I blew $35 on the same thing. Thanks guys! If you have one, don't buy the other. Pffft!.Version: 1.4.3

Needs improvementThe suggestions box covers the title of the result you're looking for, as it aligns itself with the bottom of the search bar. fix it please..Version: 2.7

InadequateI had to resort to my thirty year old Collins Robert print dictionary because this app did not have the vocab I was searching for !.Version: 2.9

Definitely need more wordsQuite useful when words are found but it is annoying to have to often resort to go back to the web to find legitimate words and their definition..Version: 2.7

ClunkyVerb conjugations and nice but overall a bit disappointingly clunky to use and seems to be a bit short on colloquial usages.Version: 2.9

DisappointingUseful and quick to use up to a limit but then very disappointing. As mentioned in other reviews translation of the verb conjugations would be good. Also a direct link from dictionary to relevant conjugation. For example if you look up 'serai' in dictionary it comes up with 'être' so you link through to conjugation it displays present tense of être and you have to search through the tenses to find the word you want. Not very straightforward. Adjectives - I think it would be reasonable to put masculine, feminine and plural versions of each adjective. It's not necessary if you know the language but that's why we are using a dictionary!.Version: 1.5.3

An Inferior productIt does not work as advertised. Double tap on verbs do not show verb conjugation (iPad). Search produces a lot of clutter, the search becomes useless. I do not recommend this product..Version: 1.4

Nice little dictionary for an astronomical priceYes, it is an very nice little concise dictionary, but you can buy the Larousse English-French dictionary with many more words and audio pronunciation for $4.99. Considering the price of Larousse this dictonary should be selling for no more than $3.99..Version: 2.3

Pas à jourIl n’est pas à jour. Par exemple, je cherche le mot VAPOTER, il n’y est pas. Ce n’est qu’un exemple parmi d’autres..Version: 2.10

Collins-Roberts English French 21.00 appThis app sucks! A waste of money! No sound for pronunciation...a disappointment! I rate this purchase at zero...no stars....this comment wouldn't send without a star, so I am rating it with one star but I do not mean it, I really am rating it as ZERO stars..Version: 2.6

C’est terribleOver promised and under delivered. That’s this app in a nutshell. Lots of different words that I can find in other French-English dictionaries that are not present here. Difficult to navigate. Did I mention it’s convoluted and difficult to navigate? The “hear a word pronounced” feature that they have the gall to list as an in-app feature relies on you highlighting the word and asking iOS to “speak” it back to you. A huge disappointment all-round and definitely not worth the $15 paid..Version: 2.9

Not happyThe new interface is difficult to read. There is less information in this upgrade. This was an expensive App. I would like to return to previous version please..Version: 2.3

Conjugator Doesn’t Function — App ClosesUnfortunately, thee app closes every time I try to conjugate a verb. It is a very pricey app that doesn’t work properly. Please fix the bug..Version: 2.9

What a Shocker!Don't update to this version. The other one was much clearer display, easy to use, and would only close down every now and then. It was 5 star. So far, with this version, when I ask it to display English to French, it displays French to English, both on my iPad and iPhone, and all the words come up in one chunk, and you have to hunt through it all to try and find what you are looking for. It has been nothing but trouble. Dreadful. I agree with the other reviews. I have never written a review before other, but felt compelled. We want the other App back please..Version: 2.3

Good but priceyThe very first word I tried looking up was 'voeu'. No joy. However when I searched for the French for 'vow' it gave me... 'voeu'. Oh well, maybe I was just incredibly unlucky, but it seems more likely that there are other similar gaping holes in this dictionary. Seems a tad expensive for this kind of poor English/French linking..Version: 0

Latest update breaks the appWas a great app until the last update. Now the horizontal and vertical are messed up, and the keyboard covers the search results. Fix this app..Version: 1.5.3

Where's the iPad versionLooks terrible on iPad, when is the update coming?.Version: 0

One key improvement neededAside from being expensive, these Collins/Ultralingua products are reasonable purchases. They seem to be essentially the old Franklin electronic dictionaries ported to the Iphone. One could certainly have hoped for a more comprehensive dictionary after all these years, but no doubt some improvements have been made (even if they are not very clear to me). Anyway, the obvious missing functionality from my point of view is the ability to build up word lists for revision/vocabulary building (the Larousse boasts of such an improvement). It is a little hard to know why Ultralingua have not done this too. Overall they seem a somewhat lazy company, just milking an old franchise. Hopefully competition will rouse them sooner rather than later..Version: 0

Save your moneyThis app is not worth the money. This one may satisfy unilingual users, but bilingual users ( I'm thinking teachers) will find it below average - and, it does not feature predictive text as all of my other dictionaries do. Big drawback..Version: 0

UNWANTED UpgradeWhat have Ultralingua done?? This is not an upgrade, it's virtually a different app!! This is not the app I married. This is not the app i paid for. I have had this app for 3-4 years, used it every single day and loved it, but now the look and feel is SO different. In my view, Ultralingua have no right to change something I have paid $35.00 for so drastically. Bad move. WE NEED OPTION TO REVERSE THE UPGRADE PLEASE..Version: 2.3

Great app, but recent upgrade bug spoils experienceI was initially skeptical about paying so much for an app but the amount of content coupled with the ease of use makes this a must have for those of us who are linguistically challenged and living in France. Unfortunately the recent update results in this app failing after 50% of searches. When one returns to the search screen to search again you are prompted to click in the search box - but doing does not bring up the keyboard. The only way to fix this is to quit the app and restart..Version: 0

Trop basique pour mon besoin.Trop de mots manquent. Je pensais avoir acheté un dictionnaire complet, mais non, je m'aperçois qu'il en existe une version plus complète à un prix plus élevé. C'est presque une arnaque, ça aurait dû être dit/offert au moment de l'achat. Bref, je suis déçue et n'ai pas envie de prendre le risque d'acheter l'autre et de ne pas trouver tous les mots dont j'ai besoin, encore..Version: 2.4.2

Slower since updateThere's a slight lag in the application when typing or favouriting a word. This only started happening after the update. Otherwise it's an indispensable dictionary. iPhone 5, iOS 6..Version: 2.4.2

Conjugation needs to translate! For the price I'm disappointed that the verb conjugation tool doesn't translate! For example I look up a verb in English and look at the conjugation. Great. But I'm more interested in the French equivalent. There's no button to flip between English and French. Instead I have to manually look up in the dictionary what the French translation for the verb is and then go back to the verb tool and type in the French word. Simple thing can make things a lot easier..Version: 0

DisappointingThis app offers nothing that I cannot already access from free competitors, and in fact is less user-friendly. The search function is not intuitive, definitions are very superficial, and for some reason it stops music from playing. Not at all worth the money I paid for it..Version: 2.7

Useless (adj): inutileUseless (adj): inutile • This dictionary is useless • Ce dictionnaire est inutile My apologies for the cheesy joke but you should avoid buying this app!.Version: 2.8

Bring old interface back.BRING BACK OLD INTERFACE - as option perhaps. OR FIVE NE MY MONEY BACK!! The new interface is not efficient..Version: 2.3

TerribleI hesitated to upgrade to the newest version and I'm so sorry I did. The interface used to be clean tidy and easy to see and the verb conjugation table in the iPad version was awesome. This new one is ugly old fashioned and a mess... Don't upgrade. I wish I could reverse to the previous version!!!.Version: 2.3
