Collins-Robert Concise for Positive User Reviews

Easy to Use and Very HelpfulI use it all the time for school and emails. It works great..Version: 2.9

You get what you pay forThere's an old adage that goes 'You get what you pay for' and, for this application, it's certainly true. Yes, it's expensive but it's way ahead of anything else on the market. It's massive and comprehensive - not only does it give you word translations and verb conjugations but, most usefully, there are many phrases and sayings for every word. Brilliant! It's like having a huge dictionary in your pocket. Everything and anything you want to say is there. It's easy to use too, with a simple search facility. Don't be put off by the screen shots in the preview - this only shows the 3 basic modes. You only see the depth and scope of this dictionary when you start to use it. If you're learning french seriously, then this is the dictionary to have..Version: 0

The pronunciation audio is badAudio for the pronunciation takes three or more clicks to access. I wish there is a dedicated button for the audio of the word so that it is accessible in one click. The sound quality of the audio is not so good, often with the beginning of the word clipped..Version: 2.9

GoodExpensive but good. Tired of apps which only work on line, or books with a small vocabulary. This isn't remarkable, it's just a dictionary, but it works. Have only occasionally been unable to find a word, and even then I think it's been a regional colloquialism. Of course - be aware that it is a dictionary, and only translates single words..Version: 2.3

Very helpfulWell worth the investment - good idiomatic uses as well as explanations. Verb conjugations are useful. Flipping between French and English is easy. Multiple meanings are explained well..Version: 2.7

FabulousI bought this app a year ago when I went to France to study French full-time for three months and it turned out to be brilliant. I didn't want to buy a traditional paper dictionary before I left because it would just take up space in my luggage, so I bought this app and decided to see how I'd get on without a traditional dictionary in the classes. Well, this app is so much better than a book in so many ways: My favourite is that I can look up a verb without knowing what the infinitive is. It's very useful if you don't know what the verb is (which is why you're looking it up, of course!) It's much quicker and easier to use. I always had it with me so when I was out and about, I could easily look something up. I used it extensively to translate menus! It also came in very handy when I realised that I needed to ask someone something but I didn't know how to say it - I could just pull out my phone and look up a verb or a noun and figure out the question on the spot. It's not a phrase book but it has many, many examples of usage and idioms. Actually, the extensive examples and usage in the entries made it incredibly useful in class. Often I knew the meaning of the individual words in a sentence but I couldn't make sense of it until I found the idiom in my dictionary. The translations are very accurate and up to date. So much so that, if there were ever communication problems between the teacher and a student (which happened every day because it was an immersion class - the teacher did not speak any language other than French), the teacher would turn to me and ask me to look it up in my dictionary so I could tell her, in French, what the student was talking about. She said that my phone was the best dictionary any of her students has ever had. Oh and the verb conjugations are just plain awesome. It's impossible to express how much easier it is to learn different tenses when it's clearly laid out for every single verb. In short, this app made me a much better French student than I would have been without it..Version: 0

Better than the real thingWhile this is pricey for an iPhone app, it is definitely a good deal compared to a real dictionary. I don't regret the money I've spent on it. I've used this dictionary every day for the last month, in French class. I always beat classmates in looking up words, and so far it has only missed one word compared to the large classroom dictionary. It has all the pronunciation, word use and alternates you expect from a real dictionary, and is easy to read. Being able to quickly look up words or conjugations (and Google!) in the definitions themselves is also very handy. The verb conjugation tool is excellent, and completely replaces my Bescherelle. Changing tenses is very easy. The history list is very handy, particularly if you want to make up a vocabulary list later on. There is a number translation tool, but frankly I've never used it. The only bug I've found is when doing a search for a word. If you type in "rec" (in French » English), you'll get a long list of possible words, but you cannot select any of the last few words. You can force the table to scroll upwards to see them, but the table snaps back with the words out of sight when you release. The only workaround is to narrow your search. I don't often have a problem with this, though. Finally, one change I'd like to see is an option to erase the entry field automatically when you go back to look up a new word. Now it takes two steps before looking up a new word: go back to the search screen; erase last word. Not a big deal, but when you are looking up several words in a row, it gets annoying, and the erase button is rather small so I often miss it. There is a back-arrow at the bottom that could take you back to the previous word if need be. Overall, a great app that needs a few tweaks, and a lower price, to be fantastic..Version: 0

Best French Dictionary! C'est Parfait!=)This French-English dictionary is the BEST, I have ever used. It is well worth the price. If you ever find yourself stuck on translating a word from English to French this app will help you. type the word in English and get it in French. I recommend to all people who speak French/English. extremely helpful. It deserves its' upmost respect as the best French dictionary. It is also very easy to use. great work Ultralingua, inc. BUY IT!!.Version: 0

Excellent French dictionaryApp made by a top publisher of French-English dictionaries, it has all the content of a medium-sized dictionary. The app is much faster to use and 2kg lighter than the print version. Well worth the money..Version: 0

Flexible French / English DictionaryThis is not just a simple translation dictionary. It covers the complexity of language and gives you many ways of dealing with this complexity. You must read the instructions carefully to get full benefit from this dictionary. In some ideal sense it is impossible to translate from one language to another as each language is ultimately idiomatic. But this is addressed implicitly by this dictionary. It must be one of the best..Version: 2.3

Almost perfect! Needs more definitions...I'm using this app to help me fight my way through Dumas' unabridged copy of 'Le comte de Monte-Cristo' that I'm reading on (and got for free from the Gutenberg Project via) Stanza. Looking up a word or conjunction takes about 5 seconds. A double-click later I'm back in my book. It's seamless, accurate and very fast on my iP4. However, there are quite a few (admittedly obscure) expressions in the book that the dictionary simply does not know. I'd love a few more definitions..even $2.50 apps have 80'000 definitions..Version: 0

Amended ReviewOne would think that for 25 bucks you would get the feminine version of an English noun. You don't. Unless you specifically enter "actress" etc.. Then there is the user interface - which is not nearly as intuitive as it could be. Why would the designers assume that if I enter an English verb, looking for a French translation, that I would want that verb conjugated in English? True, I can get that conjugation by tapping on the French translation, but they could also have made the French-English/English-French button work for the conjugation utility. Having said all that, the usage examples provided for every word are excellent. And the word database seems to be enormous So, all in all, a good app. But for 25 bucks they could definitely have spent a little more time refining the interface..Version: 0

It is all that it claims to beI use this a lot and have had no stability problems on iPhone 3gs. I wish the dictionary were a little larger, but it has many words and examples of word usage. Idioms can be a little hard to track down, but that is not unusual. The verb conjugator is very thorough, and it has entries for many verbs. No regrets about buying it at all..Version: 0

Collins dictionaryI love this dictionary. It is very handy when I’m reading my French novels …so fast! i’ve used it for years now and wouldn’t be without it. TV.Version: 2.10

Highly useful!!I've been living in France for some time now, and this dictionary has saved me on numerous ocassions. It's far better than an online one, since if there's no Internet you're out of luck, and it has excellent examples of how to use nearly any word. My one complaint would be that if I enter a French word, it should be able to recognize it as such and automatically give an English translation, and vice versa. Right now if you enter "ready" while French to English is selected, it will tell you that there's no entry available. It should be able to deduce that ready may be an English word instead... I highly recommend it and think, at least in my situation, it's definitely worth every penny!.Version: 0

SuperbI am learning French and I use it every day. Far better than a print dictionary..Version: 0

Love the rewriteSame level of great content, but looks much slicker now. Thanks for updating, not re-releasing!.Version: 2.3

Worth the high priceVery professional interface, which does just what you want and with as few keystrokes as possible. Recognising inflected forms is an absolute boon. It's as good as having a printed book (which, for many "read this" -style PDA applications, is really saying something.).Version: 0

Excellent, would love audio pronunciationsAs others have mentioned this is excellent, and much better than a print dictionary with its verb conjugation section. My only request is for some audio clips alongside each entry. I also use the Collins-Robert dictionary on my desktop computer (through Safari) that has audio pronunciations, so it'd be great if you (kind developers) could push them over into the iPhone app. Thanks, I use this every day..Version: 0

Collins has been the gold standardFor over fifty years. If you need a dictionary of real quality this is it..Version: 2.7

Collins French-English dictionary - magnifique!Super, formidable, chouette! I have found it indispensable when reading a fench book and I have yet to find a word that is missing. The history feature is great for reviewing the vocabulary of the chapter you have just read. I also feel very smug in my French class when I just walk in with my iPhone where others are carrying an armful of dictionaries and so on. I would give it five stars if you could turn on a feature to get your definitions in the same language as the word you're looking up. A thought for the next edition, perhaps? Expensive but money well spent!.Version: 0

Cumbersome but detailedThis is a little cumbersome and difficult to navigate and use, but it makes up for that with in depth definitions and example sentences. Great app..Version: 2.7

Excellent AppI have found this dictionary absolutely invaluable. It not only gives a range of meanings of words, it also provides useful phrases in which the words might be included. The verb tables and numeral function are clear and helpful . It is absolutely worth every penny I paid for it, and I use it almost every day..Version: 1.5.2

DécevantDes mots simples que l’on ne trouve pas, une traduction qui fonctionne dans un sens mais pas dans l’autre... bref, j’ai acheté ce dictionnaire sur la réputation de Robert et Collins. Je suis très déçu..Version: 2.7

Great toolAn terrific resource for quick consultations. Wonderful for an high intermediate reader like me who often needs a clarification buy doesn't want to haul around a heavy dictionary. The interface is great because it anticipates the word as you type and if your French spelling is weak - like mine is - is saves a lot of time..Version: 0

Not 5 starsThis is a very good French dictionary. I took away one star because you cannot just touch a word to hear it. You have to copy it first, and then, if you want to hear it again, you have to copy it (or the phrase) all over again..Version: 2.8

Simply AmazingThis is the best French dictionary I've ever seen. Simple interface, simple transition between languages, phrasebook, and great conjugations interface. This is such a great jump from the previous updates. Well done guys, you deserve a pat on the back. Well worth the money!!!.Version: 2.3

Better than a dictionary!Easy to use interface that allows you to quickly flick between English and French and back again at the touch of a button. Good definitions and listing of relevant phrases and terms. Better than a dictionary because it has a built in history of your searches. Worth the price and invaluable for students and travelers. Bonjour!.Version: 0

Excellent!Je l'aime beaucoup!.Version: 2.6

Great job! Great dictionary. Fantastic app rewrite. This is the best iPhone and iPad French-English dictionary available. First, it is a solid bi-lingual dictionary. (The best dictionary was Harrap's, but that is no longer available on iOS. It's only available in hardcopy.) The rewrite of the app has taken some of the great features of the company's other Ultralingua app and applied them here. In particular, I really appreciate the ability to change the font size. Also, the app is pretty quick to find words. Great job!.Version: 2.3

Collins Pro Eng-FrenchTrans Dictionary 1.4.1Bought to help boost vocab while in Brussels - very handy, quick and easy to use, even good with finding obscure phrases. Great for finding the correct tense for verbs too. Recommended..Version: 1.4.1

Dictionnaire CollinsTrès bon dictionnaire et de plus facile à utiliser. Le prix est élevé mais je crois qu'il en vaut le coup..Version: 1.4.3

Don't waste your moneyI'd heard good things about this app, but thus far precisely none of the words I've looked up--"prescience", "grits", and "sprocket"--are in the dictionary. Had I known this prior to purchase, I would have continued to do what I've always done, which is to type the English term + "French" into my phone's internet browser ("sprocket french" for example) and arrive at the translation I'm looking for. The ludicrous price tag on this app has left me with nothing but an incurable case of buyer's remorse..Version: 1.5

Best French dictionary everIn the 30 years that I have been studying and using French I have yet to find a better French-English dictionary, whether in-print, online or an app. This app is totally worth the price. You will throw away all other dictionaries once you have this app..Version: 0

Worth itThis dictionary is everything it says it is and more. Although the price might seem a bit high, buying any high quality dictionary is going to be a similar price. One very useful feature is the verb congugation. It is acurate and has ever tense of the verbs. Overall a great choice.Version: 0

Very goodPricy but it is worth it.Version: 0

Fantastic App!!! ...Just one possible adjustment...I love this app!!! Finally I've found a French/English dictionary that includes conjugation and everything I could ask for. There is one thing, however, that I would love to be improved that would make it absolutely perfect... With regards to the conjugation section I find it rather disorganised, I have two other apps (Bescherelle-Le conjuguer & Le Robert-Dictionnaire Dixel) who arrange their conjugation sections much better. For example, grouping the 'temps' under 'mode' headings, e.g: Indicatif: Subjonctif: Modes Impersonnels: - Présent - Présent - Participe Présent - Imparfait - Imparfait - Participe Passé - Passé Composé, etc - Passé Composé, etc - Gérondif Présent, etc This would be so much more organised and easy to use, especially for beginners! I love my Bescherelle app for this reason, but unfortunately it's not a dictionary, let alone a French/English one, so if Collins improved this it would be my NUMBER ONE app. Developers, if you read this, please, please, please consider this improvement!!!!! Thanks :).Version: 0

Very useful app!I've had this app for three years, and have in that time used this app almost every day. It makes living in France (at the start, when you're learning the language) so much easier because it's convenient and easy to use, as well as being comprehensive. Great application! I'm not a massive fan of the last update where you can scroll upwards towards words placed previously in the dictionary. It makes it really easy to get lost among all the text. Otherwise, all in all a great app..Version: 1.5.1

Exactly what I needJust moved to France, and I have only one year of middle school French under my belt. Up to now, I've relied upon my not-so-little "pocket" dictionary, but it's both too bulky to actually put in a pocket and lacking in what one really needs when learning a language, living here, traveling, etc.: those fine distinctions, subtle differences in meaning, and, most of all, lots and lots of examples. So I knew I needed something else. I gulped very, very hard at the idea of spending so much, but I NEEDED it... How has it turned out? How practical is it? Suffice it to say, I'd pay twice as much if I had to. A great dictionary is indispensable when learning a language or living/traveling somewhere. And this is a great dictionary. Best of all, it fits in my pocket with ease..Version: 1.4.1

Very good app!I'm taking a french course and this app has replaced my dictionary and verb tables. The look up is fast and pretty good even if you don't quite know how to spell the word you're looking for. The dictionary is large enough to cover almost any verb or definition you'll encounter in everyday use. My only gripe is if you look up a verb in the dictionary for a definition then switch to the verb table to see how it conjugates, you have to re-enter it. Fix that and it would be flawless..Version: 0

Don't be put off—it's really improvedMy initial reaction was horror at the huge default typeface with its ugly quotation marks. And what's this nonsense with the 'ie' underlining and dotted 'e's in the German? One star lost. After changing to Helvetica and working with Italian and French versions I have nothing but praise for the intelligent space optimization, removal of redundancies and time-wasting modalities. And they did what I asked: made the last used tense the default. And I am happy to see the same excellent dictionaries underneath. One of my most used three apps and best buys..Version: 2.3

Great useful app but why no iPad support?Dictionary is extremely handy on my iPhone but why is there no iPad support. I just get the iPhone version on my iPad. I also have the ultralingua german dictionary and this updated a long while ago to use the iPad properly. Update please!.Version: 0

UpdateThis was a great app until the last update (during the last few days) this update was meant to fix crashes. i never had it crash until the update, now it crashes at least one per day (albeit with a lot of use). Also, as some rebiewers have said, it is missing some expressions etc but until the last update i loved it. now not so sure. if they fix the crashes and add expressions, prepositional phrases and conjunctions, it could end up the best dictionary app for french, c'mon guys go the extra mile , you are almost there!-.Version: 1.5.1

No iPhone 5 support yet!Version 1.5.2 For the price of this app, iPhone 5 screen resolution should be supported by now. Version 1.2.5: The verb conjugator is nice, but it would be better if they could lay out all the tenses on a single scrollable screen (like Antidote Mobile) as that would make it more useful. As it stands, you have to know the name of the tense you need (plus-que-parfait, passé antétieur, etc.) or go through each tense until you've come to the one you know you want, but just didn't know the name for..Version: 1.5.2

Brilliant!I was a bit worried about the price but it is worth every penny. The verb congugation is fantastic! I can do my homework on the train. No more lugging around my huge dictionary. It's my best app so far..Version: 0

Not very goodThis dictionary is not worth 20$. A lot of word are missing and it is overall not working really well.Version: 2.8

Doesn't use up too much memoryThis is an excellent app as it's based on one of the best dictionaries. But amazingly it only takes up 6.3MB, which isn't bad when it puts a huge dictionary in your pocket, available to consult offline..Version: 0

Brilliant!I am an University Student in the UK, studying Modern Languages, and I have to say this is as good as any standard billingual dictionary you will find. The equivalent in book form is at least £20 so it's definitely not too expensive. Haven't encountered any words that aren't in it, and have nothing but praise for it!.Version: 0

Excellent ResourceIt's been an excellent resource for my French studies. My phone is always with me so it's always easy to look up new words especially when I cannot take my dictionary with me. A little pricey though and that's why I'm taking away 1 star from my rating.Version: 2.6

Well worth the money!Initially I wondered whether an app that costs more than a decent sized hardback French/English dictionary could be worth it, but it really is great. It's quick (far quicker than looking words up in a paper dictionary) and the fact that you can put in any conjugated verb and it will link to the original verb is super, especially for tenses you're not familiar with (e.g. subjunctive). One or two oddities (e.g. enfuir (to run away, save oneself) is listed as a verb but not linked to the definition) but is the best app I've bought. Worth every penny!.Version: 0

Voice neededYes really needs a Speak option. I use ISpeak French to help but would be good to have it integrated. Please :).Version: 0

Worth every penny and moreIt took me a while to choose which French dictionary to download because there were so many variations from this company and others. But I'm so glad I chose this one! There really is so much content all there waitin at your fingertips. One of the best features is that unlike standard dictionaries which just show you a direct translation of the word you've looked up, this dictionary will show you the word used in many different contexts - many of which you'd never have guessed by yourself e.g. common expressions. For the person who said he has to re-enter the word if switching from dictionary to verb conjugation, you don't have to! You can hold down on any word in the dictionary and it brings up a little menu where you can choose to conjugate it. Maybe the feature came in after you left your review... The only tiny negative comment I have to make is that the app is a bit slow to start up. At first glance it's quick and it looks like it has loaded completely but it then seems to pause a few seconds trying to remember the last word I looked up so that it can repopulate the dictionary. I would prefer it to load up with a clean slate if it's faster to. As I say, it's not a big issue, and the app is lightning fast once it has loaded. If you need a French dictionary, download this one now - you won't regret it!.Version: 0

Love itThis App is one that I use everyday and during French Class. I highly recommend it, as it is worth every penny.Version: 2.6

A modern dictionaryThis dictionary translates words in a way that takes one to the various usages of the word more quickly than older versions of French-English dictionaries. The translations seem to be more to the point. And words are nicely matched up with expressions that have the word in it..Version: 2.9

Worth itIt’s worth it to spend a little money and get this high quality product over the free French to English translators. They have an extensive list of example sentences which is very helpful..Version: 2.8

Fantastique! This dictionary is brilliant and leaves paper based dictionaries in the dust. This is what smartphones were made for! The search is powerful and smart and the phonetics are extremely helpful. I highly recommend it for anyone learning French it's saved me hours of hardship. Absolutely worth the price :).Version: 0

Great AppThis app has been enormously useful to me. I’m learning French and it is my primary resource. I notice on my iPhone usage stats that it is consistently my most used app. I really like the recent changes to enable filtering out of selected verb tenses. This is great because some are so rarely used or I haven’t learned them yet anyway..Version: 2.9

Expensive...but worth it$30 is expensive. Especially for an app. However, I found this app indispensable during my last trip throughout Europe. It works perfectly and has useful verb conjugations as well. I bought this one and the German one and they both came quite in handy. Even the locals were impressed by the examples. A paper dictionary might be cheaper, but not as handy as this one. The one thing you might consider is whether you need the iPad version or could settle for the iPhone version..Version: 1.4.3

Of tremendous help for travelingI already speak French having been an immersion student in the 1960's but my vocabulary is rusty after many decades of non-use. What I was looking for was an app that didn't assume that I was a beginner trying to learn the language. This app fits the bill with a solid word count, plenty of usage phrases and a smooth user interface on the iPad. I do wish it was possible to search beyond just the dictionary entries. For example, being able to search for two word phrases such as "wrong turn" in the usage entries would be of great value..Version: 2.3

Change of heartI've gone from disliking this app to using it every day. I was wrong before. I should have taken time to get to know it and understand it, and now I have. I value it not only for helping me with my French pronunciation, but for providing a seemingly endless number of relevant examples for almost every word I look up. This app has become indispensable to me, and I'm grateful for everything it provides! Keep those examples coming!.Version: 2.7

What's wrong with it?I am among the ones who've been using these Ultralingua dictionaries for years. Apart from a few teething problems with the latest version (I had to delete and reinstall to fix a crash on startup), this app is still awesome and is better than ever. The conjugations work way better now, the interface is quicker and you can see everything on one screen if you want. The only learning curve is that you have to press the entry you want to see in the search results list to get more detail. Basically they've combined all the previous version's "modes" (numbers, dictionary, conjugations) and put the dictionary entries and the former search results list on the same screen. They've also combined the many dictionary apps into one "Ultralingua" app (you only have to pay once! read the instructions, it's easy). If you want to downgrade to the old version, look on your computer for the app name .ipa - the old version is normally there unless you've gone out of your way to remove it. Just drag the file onto iTunes and sync. In the meantime, the rest of us will be enjoying the slick and streamlined new update. Keep the updates coming! If you're wondering, I don't work for / I'm not affiliated with Ultralingua in any way shape or form. I'm just a fan who is surprised by the bad press..Version: 2.3

So much better than what I had been using...I am very impressed with this app. I had been using a French-English bilingual dictionary on my Blackberry (I have forgotten the publisher) and thought that was nice. But this app totally blows the BB app away! One really cool feature is that it will recognize conjugated verbs - what a time saver!!! Add to that the fact that it has full conjugations for every verb, and you have a really useful app. $25 seems like a steep price, but I am happy with my purchase. Navigation is taking me a little bit of time to get used to, but I am new to the iPhone, so I suspect the difficulty is with me, not the app..Version: 0

An Excellent French - English AppCollins Pro French-English Translation Dictionary is a solid, responsive and comprehensive program. It works as described and is quite useful. You can search English or French words (and it has an autocomplete feature). It also makes useful suggestions if you mispell the word. The ability to touch any word in the dictionary and then either a) lookup the conjugation tables b) search the dictionary for it or c) google it is extremely useful. The app provides conjugation tables for many tenses. It's as easy as touching 'Tense' then selecting the tense you'd like. The numbers app is also very helpful - I imagine it would be excellent for beginners who need a quick converter. All in all this app is excellent..Version: 0

I love this app! This dictionary is a necessity for any native English-speaker studying the French language or visiting a francophone country. While in France this summer, I enjoyed the fact that I didn't need to be online to use it. Also, in my French courses at Texas A&M, using this app is so much more convenient than flipping through a paper dictionary. Love it!.Version: 0

French ChefWe have a semi competent French chef in our canteen at work, and this dictionary has the most wonderful range of swear words. I'm now ready to comment on the next lousy meal!!! It's actually brilliant in other respects too, and saves your searches so that you can do revision very easily. Three Michelin Stars (unlike our chef) and five Apples..Version: 0

Very practical, 🤘🔥This app is a must. It covers many expressions, idioms and common phrases in both English and French. There are lots of positive points that you can enjoy learning with it. But there is one drawback that somehow gets really disappointing and it’s the audio option in iphone platform that you have to hold the word to let the « speak » option pop up. Instead they can have a simple icon for listening to prononciation just by touching it. Hope it gets done in update..Version: 2.9

J adore mais...I love this app...used it constantly during my year-long stay in France. Only wish it was updated more often with new words and phrases. Ce serait parfait si c était le cas! De toute façon 30$ très bien depensé! :).Version: 1.4.3

Very timely rediscovery of this French DictionaryToday I am going to French Calendonia and hope I will have lots of opportunities to practice my French. I didn’t learn much at school but did four years study at University. With this handy dictionary on my iPad it is so easy to refresh my memory with difficult words..Version: 2.8

Quick and comprehensiveThe history function is great - you can go back and study words you've looked up. The only words I have been unable to find are fairly obscure. A random word feature would be a great addition. Highly recommended..Version: 0

Infinite scrolling is perfectThe infinite scrolling is a feature that was in my wishing list and it is finally here. It works perfectly! My french keeps getting better and Ultralingua is part of it, thanks.Version: 1.5

The best... and most expensiveI tried a bunch, and this one was by far the best and most expensive French dictionary for the iPhone. I wish I would have just spent the money on this one first, and not wasted it on the the cheaper ones that had such a limited selection of words.....Version: 1.3.3

Outstanding.I love the new interface. I'm a daily through-the-day student user. Fast search with everything I need instantly without having to fumble around. No mode switching required. Have had this a while in its prior version and I am BLOWN AWAY by the rewrite. Nicely done, ultralingua!.Version: 2.3

WthomasVery helpful, detailed reference particularly when used as a second resource after Google translate. Explains idioms and acronyms..Version: 2.7

HappyI searched for ages for the right dictionary especially as this one was quite expensive but I'm happy I paid a little more. Very pleased with it, there is so much in there. Could we have some editing functionality on the history list so rather than just clearing it all you could just delete some words to form a list of the words you want to focus on learning?.Version: 0

Perfect French DictionaryI loved this dictionary, it's incredibly compact and easy to use, but is just as complete as any physical dictionary. Because of this you can use it in classes and while reading without needing to use an unwieldy paper dictionary. I've never come across a word it didn't recognise (including slang from both languages), and the layout is so pleasing to the eye it's enjoyable to use the app. The ability to look up another word you come across in the dictionary by clicking it is incredibly useful, and there are a lot of little but useful features like spelling correction, dictionary history and the verb conjugator. The only thing that could be improved is the size of the actual history, and the price tag. The size of the history is currently an arbitary 50 results, but a longer history would be useful in case you've forgotten some of the words you've looked up in the past. The dictionary is also bit pricey at $30, and might put some people off. Overall, though, this is an amazing app, and I would recommend it to absolutely anyone who needs a French dictionary..Version: 1.4

Perfect since the new updateThanks for fixing the bug quickly.Version: 1.5.4

Always reliable..I’ve been using this for years now, so deserves a good review. Easy reference with, almost all of the words you’re likely to need. I would recommend it...Version: 2.9

Initial Confusion was UnfoundedI was a bit confused when I first used this application. However after reading the introduction and the tips and tricks, I have found that this is an absolutely fantastic dictionary. It provides quite a few examples for each entry and is easy to use after just a minute or two..Version: 2.7

Soooo convenient! This app is great. So much better then a book. I can look up things so fast. It would be cool if you could bookmark words and review them later, like a flashcard feature..Version: 0

Great simple efficient appIt just translates as it is supposed to. Excellent.Version: 2.8

Excellent, worth the moneyThis is simply the best French Dictionary and reference tool I have ever come across. Expensive, but worth every penny. As with all things you get what you pay for..Version: 0

C'est Parfait!I'm going to France tomorrow for the 5th time in a year. I love this app. Translations are detailed, often with example phrases. I like looking at words I already know just to pick up a new French phrase or two. Tap on a word in an example phrase and that word is opened. Don't worry, the back arrow takes you back to the original word you were studying. Verb conjugations are complete. This is the only French/English dictionary I need..Version: 2.7

Collins Pro French-English Translation DictionaryAfter I had worked out the intricacy of the application I found it to be very easy to use and exactly what I needed whilst on the move in France..Version: 0

Excellent dictionaryI bought this rather than its (slightly) cheaper rival because I own the paper version of the dictionary, and have found it excellent. The iPhone version is equally good, giving not only the meanings of a word, but different shades of meaning, and illustrating how a word is used in different contexts. One or two quibbles: sometimes it's not clear if a qualifying phrase (eg. 'informal use') refers to what precedes or follows. Sometimes the use of bold face is inconsistent. And (as in other UltraLingua dictionaries) I don't like the prominence given to translating numbers into the foreign language. But these are minor quibbles, and it's an excellent reference tool for anyone who needs a French dictionary on the go, and good value for money..Version: 0

PerfectYes, it's pricey, but this is a high-quality, comprehensive dictionary with a great interface. Quick, convenient, and portable. Perfect..Version: 0

Better value for money that it seems....The size of the dictionary in this thing is MASSIVE. I downloaded this to save myself from carrying around a fairly average size dictionary, but it actually saves me from carrying round one the size of my head. Add the fact that searching is quicker than flickering through pages, and the indispensible conjugation tool and you've actually got a very cheap portable dictionary. Highly recommended to French students from basic to even university level. (Same goes to all Spanish version of this by the way; I gave an identicle review and rating to that)..Version: 0

My Favorite Dictionary So FarI looked high and low for a good French dictionary app that was stable, didn’t crash, had good translations, and worked offline. This is the only one I could find that fit the bill. It’s not perfect but I’m happy to pay $15 for something that just works when I need it to..Version: 2.9

GoodIt's maybe not cheap, but it's good - I reckon it's worth the coin...very easy/fast to get to what you need, no internet required and generally easy on the eye. I've completely abandoned my paper French-English dictionary for this; I use it every day. Works fine on an iPhone, but with the bigger real estate of an iPad it's very nice to use. If you consider the 100's of hours you'll spend studying french, why would you want some pos toy app for $0.99?.Version: 2.4.2

Great dictionaryI have found it nothing but great! I use it to translate newspapers and words I hear on films. I have not found anything that I couldn't find in the dictionary . Well worth the money. For this serious French learner it has been well worth the money. I wanted to write a review to give the alternate view to the other reviews here!.Version: 0

The BestThis is an exceptional bilingual dictionary. Must have..Version: 2.8

Love the app the cheap ones don't compareWould be nice to add audio pronunciation..Version: 0

The best app I have seenThis just knocks spots of anything else I have used. An unobtrusive tool when you are out or rapid reference tool when studying. The interface is beautifully simple and intuitive.... Blinding app'.Version: 0

Great dictionaryBought this application when I moved to Montreal for school. I totally love it especially after the new update that suggests a word as you type it. Developers: please add the pronunciation feature!.Version: 0

Great dictionaryA pretty amazing dictionary but extremely over-priced. Happy to have it.Version: 2.9

Dictionary French-English&English-FrenchThank you so much for this essential tool when you read newspaper, magazine and books..Version: 2.10

Prefer this app to a paper-based dictionaryWhen at my desk, I prefer this app to a paper-based dictionary. The range of words in both languages is extensive and the "switcheroo" device for changing the direction of a search is extremely useful when you need to double back to cross-check a particular usage. The IPA/API pronunciation guide, normal for French dictionaries, is in a large and easy to read typeface. As someone else has posted here, the white-on-grey reverse type in the search box is hard to read and I support the reviewer's comments. My own quibble is that the method for clearing the search box is sometimes very good - you simply overtype the previous entry - but at other times it is necessary to tap tap tap away on the backspace key. If there is some way of forcing the search box to default to the overtype method, please explain. That said, this is a very good and useful dictionary. Pop Vox.Version: 2.4.2

Ultralingua Collins RobertsVraiment très bien, le meilleur dictionnaire de traduction parmi la vingtaine que j'ai essayé.Version: 2.6

Perfect for anyone studying FrenchLove this dictionary, particularly the lists of verb conjugations and grammar examples. It is by far the most comprehensive and useful dictionary I have found so far..Version: 2.4.2

Very GoodVery good and authoritative. Conjugations are handy. The only real issue is that you can only search for headwords. If you want to search for an expression, you need to guess what headword that expression might live under, find that, and then see if the expression you want is there..Version: 1.3.3

Good DictionaryLiving in France (and having poor French!) I find this application very useful to have in your pocket in many different situations. The application is quick and easy to navigate; it works well and has good examples of how a particular word can be used in different instances. The verb conjugation is very good although it would be better if the list that allows you to select a particular tense was described in both French and English in both translation instances (a relatively small detail). I would like to see an upgrade for audio pronunciation of words though the iPhone speaker..Version: 0

Verb ConjugationI highly recommend this app. It has been a lifesaver for learning French. But I would like to see a separate section included in the app for verb conjugation. Please don't sit idle, however, as there are words missing that need to be added to the dictionary..Version: 1.5.2

Worth every pennyCompared to a print dictionary costing twice as much, this is amazing. The ability to simply click and get instant conjugations, tenses, declensions, etc is well worth the price. Typeface is easy to read and the user interface is easy to use, but you have to get used to remembering to click to translate in the opposite direction. (This is much like remembering which half of a print dictionary is Fr->En or En->Fr.) This version contains "back" and "forward" buttons which are particularly useful. Although entry-line spell-check is not provided, there is now a useful "Google-style" feature that will suggest other options ("Did you mean...?") if no entry is found for the input that the user just entered. Ultralingua offers a similar dictionary for slightly less money. The two are very similar, but this "Pro" version includes an enormous number of examples of words as used in colloquial expressions (some of which are decidedly "colorful", and not suitable for all audiences). Remember that this is a DICTIONARY. It is not meant to translate entire phrases or sentences. With the translations and grammar tools provided by this app, you should be able to form phrases on your own. If not, you might consider a different type of application, such as a phrase book..Version: 0

Excellent dictionaryI’ve had this for many years on various phones and find it excellent. Like the paper equivalent, good range of words and definitions and easy to use..Version: 2.7

Good but needs developmentGood app but it needs a bookmarks section to store all those things you find tricky to remember. In addition, though it's probably impossible to store all the entries in spoken French on the iPhone (except perhaps on the 3GS 32GB), a reduced range would be good. Alternatively, it would be truly wonderful to have a link to a website where ALL the entries are spoken in French. It's true that this might represent a few months work but isn't this the way we are (almost) inevitably going?.Version: 0

I love these dictionaries!!!!Well...I study Romance Languages, Spanish(my first language) Italian (2 yrs. of it) and I am about to start French and Portuguese, I own Collins Spanish and Italian pro, and I just bought this one for French I am confident that It won't let me down.....especially since such an old company is behind these apps. it beats carrying a dictionary with you which does not conjugate verbs and does not write numbers for you... BUYT IT!!! It's worth every penny...!.Version: 0

Greatly improvedThe new version of this dictionary has corrected all of the problems I complained of before. The verb conjugations now work extremely well and have the added bonus of a translation of each verb form which is not usually provided in a verb table. The text can now be increased in size so a teacher would be able to enlarge the image sufficiently for it to be seen at the back of a classroom. A better use of fonts has been made which adds greatly to the clarity. I am not sure how large the content of the dictionary is when compared with the very large hardback copy I have sitting on my shelf at home. You might still want more content but I find this dictionary contains most of the words and phrases I need on a daily basis. I use this dictionary every day and now will have no hesitation in recommending this version to all my new students. It is expensive but well worth the money..Version: 2.3

Great appI just wanted a dictionary and have got just that. Is user friendly, and I am very happy with it. Would be good to include audio as well.Version: 2.6

Mobile dictionaryI was bought the hard back version and decided to get the app which I’m finding very useful as it conjugates verbs as well as translating. It is easy to use in either direction and quick too..Version: 2.9

Great app, with one little issueThis is easily the best French dictionary app. A lot of care was put into making the interface clean and intuitive. And the content comes from LeRobert- arguably the most authoritative source possible for the French language. The only issue is that it's clumsy to close definitions. You open a definition by tapping on the word, but to close you have to click on a little "arrows" button on the other side of the screen. The definitions also stay open forever, so after awhile a bunch of definitions are open. I'd expect them to be closed automatically at some point, like when you open the app..Version: 2.4.2

Love this appThis app is amazing! I bought it last year and it was pretty darn good, but then I loved it so so so much more when I went to France and stayed with a French family for a week. It did everything I needed and helped so much with my limited French, I could use it wherever I was, it, was fantastic!.Version: 1.4

Excellent French on line app.I find this app excellent.Version: 2.7

Worth the $30It is $30 but absolutely worth it. It works fast, you can switch between the languages with a little button at the top and it's easy to use. I also hate the idea of paying $30 for an app (I bought the Spanish and Portuguese ones too), but it'll be worth it to brush up on my languages on the go, or to translate things I don't quite know the meaning of. You can try the other cheaper apps, but I just went straight to the brand I trust the best, rather than wasting money on lower-end dictionaries. I hate wasting money..Version: 1.4.3

Vast improvementsI like the "new" format, although it may have been implemented some time ago. I took 18 months off from French, so these improvements may have been in place for awhile. This is a thorough reference source. I may not ever use it to its fullest. 5 stars. -NK.Version: 2.3

Worth the moneyThis is expensive by app standards especially for something you can get dozens of for free. But you'll be bothered by ads with those and, worse, you won't find words unless you enter them in unconjugated original form with no prefix or suffix. This dictionary is just much more useful and pleasing..Version: 2.7

Contrast colours not good enoughDear developers, can we please go back to having black text on a white background for the word search? How can anyone possibly think white on grey is ok for any level of vision? Some of us need a helping hand! Universal accessibility, please! I would give 5 stars if it wasn't for this problem..Version: 2.4.2

Great!...but.Great, as a student learning french having an update that includes things such as how to form and place sentences with forms such as indirect and direct object pronouns..Version: 1.4

The gold standard in translation dictionaries!I have 3 different Collins-Robert dictionaries and have never found a better dictionary!.Version: 2.7

Almost perfectUsed this for the 1st time instead of a classic dictionary in my French class and it was brilliant! No more flicking though pages to find meanings. Also the -ir grammar mode is awesome. However please do an update to save the tense last used as it kept defaulting back to present tense. Also it would be handy when flicking between the dictionary to grammar modes if it remembered the word that was searched for..Version: 0

Well worth the moneyA great dictionary, I can alway find the correct usage in its comprehensive listings. Love the new way verbs are listed... Each improvement adds so much to this dictionary. I spent a long time looking and was dubious about the cost, but I have wasted so much money on other language dictionaries that I know I made the right decision to purchase the Collins..Version: 1.5

Superbe je l’adoreExcellente.Version: 2.8

Very niceI was so impressed with your latest upgrade (2.3, German and Italian), that I bought this as well. The previous versions were always really good. The latest version has improved on that. I really like the way conjugating verbs has been integrated, and the way one can change tenses, yet remain in the context of the original word. The verb tables and font choice are also excellent. Well done..Version: 2.3

Disappointed, no depth to thisLook elsewhere if you're looking for a French/English dictionary app with any depth of coverage either in words listed or translations given. Wiktionary in a browser is much much better — in fact wonderful..Version: 2.7
