Tumblr – Fandom, Art, Chaos for Negative User Reviews

Updates are awfulI ignored updating my app for the longest time because I saw other people complaining about all these things and I knew that I wouldn’t like it either. Unfortunately I clicked ‘update all’ on the App Store for my apps and completely forgot about tumblr :/ first of all the new Home Screen app icon is so gross I’m embarrassed to have it on my phone. Second of all I absolutely hate hate hate hate hate how that new storefront took the spot of your account/blog- I have severe adhd and used to heart stories to read later and use the account tab, home page and search tab to have two different things set up to be able to help keep me entertained and be able to explore the pages and work I love more but now with the account tab being on the home page and having its original spot be taken by a money grab scheme (something that insta also inputted that made me leave it!) , obviously can’t do that anymore. And third (I’ve had this update already) tumblr live is sooo freaking annoying like for the love of everything I already have lives for every other app I don’t even watch, I don’t want another app like that. Seriously I’ve been on this app for 12-13(?) years now and this is honestly the first time I’m considering deleting the app and just leaving tumblr. I understand needing to keep up with it’s competitors but tumblr is doing the opposite and getting worse and worse.Version: 28.5

Need to get their $#!t togetherAfter years of their users complaining about the nazis, white supremacists, and the porn bots, their solution was to make their policy extremely anti women and anti nsfw content (majority of the users were there for nsfw content) and roll out a blanket ban and new algorithm. They’ve had some bad updates in the past, but this current one has seen users leave in droves, seen their algorithms flag things as nsfw that could be something as simple as a picture of a daisy, and seen the nazis and porn bots safe to remain. I won’t lie, the site did have issues before, and those issues definitely needed to be addressed. How they’ve gone about that is the entirely wrong way and for the wrong reasons. I’ll be deleting my account in the next few days after 10 years on the site..Version: 12.3.1

Constant crashes and Removed good featuresWhat with the plague of the nsfw thing. Tumblr was already crashing down before that, quite literally. The app constantly just shut down on me not being able to keep up with my tumblr I guess because it couldn’t load the photos or save photos thus making it hang and shut down. Second of all, who’s idea was it to remove the manage accounts feature? A lot of people out there has more than one blog and that was actually an amazing tool that helped in managing my blogs and now I don’t even use my accounts now because of the hassle of having to log out and log back in and the repetition of having to that just to manage my blogs. I’ve started using tumblr less and less. Everything was so much more convenient, to manage your accounts through your phone and now you can’t do that. Very disappointed in what tumblr has become. I hope they learn unlike most companies and listen to their audience and provide because at the rate they’re going and new competition coming up, tumblr will be a fad just like MySpace.Version: 12.8

Doesn’t listen to user baseTo preface, i have been using Tumblr since 2012 and it has been my main social media for about as long! this is an app that actively removes and works against its appealing old-internet features it’s sooo proud of with every update, to major userbase backlash that is unheeded. 99% of the userbase (literally has been polled) does not use the tumblr live feature and most actively dislike it, but in the US if you don’t want it you have to disable it every 7 days not gettin removed. there is this obnoxious cramming-in of features to try and assimilate tumblr to modern platforms, acting like tumblr is somehow “difficult to use” when literally a minute of guidance when you download would be work…. and when it was literally perfect as it was without these changes. once this site starts listening to what its userbase actually wants, and what it actually needs to fix such as the search system and its janky broken ads, my review will change. i would love to offer tumblr my money through simple donations, but as it stands i simply don’t think my money would go toward actually supporting what this site stands for, as a bastion of the old internet. this site and app are going downhill. i hope things get better..Version: 30.3

‘Open in app’ not working? So I was on twitter and there was a tumblr link which opened when I clicked on it but said ‘go to my dashboard’ instead of showing the content. When I followed that ‘go to my dashboard’ link it opened up the App Store even though I already have the app? So then I tried opening the link in safari instead and tried to press the ‘open in app’ option at the top and when I did it took me to the app... for half a second, and then went out and back to the safari tab. Every time I tried ‘open in app’ it would do so but then take me back to safari?? Which isn’t what I wanted, I want to stay in the app and I want the link to open the content in the app (I checked the tumblr page I was trying to go to, to see if it was still up and it was, so it’s not the tumblr page that is the issue I don’t think) Thanks.Version: 13.0

Infested with nazisY’all need to buy some raid because this place is infested. Those Nazi cockroaches are still here. Clean up your mess..Version: 12.6

We liked tumblr because it was uniqueAll these new updates seem to be pushing tumblr towards being like every other social media site, with the layout changes, video player changes (why can’t I pause anything now?), tumblr live that nobody wants, and so much other stuff too. Also, what on earth was the point of the scary dashboard clown!?!?!.Version: 31.1

LOUD ADSIn an app that is not audio based it is BEYOND OBNOXIOUS to have LOUD ADS THAT AUTO PLAY. this might be the last straw for me, it’s offensive and so incredibly of out of touch with UX i cannot fathom thinking this was a good choice.Version: 30.6.1

Broken appImagine using a bot that identifies the stupidest posts ever as nsfw, like cat photos. Imagine not monitoring your own website and then having to go into damage control when the App Store takes action. Imagine banning major blogs. Imagine not actually solving the issue of porn bots (which the staff have known about but haven’t taken action). This is tumblr. I will not support tumblr going forward if they uphold a sfw only website, and thus damage blogs and even things that are sfw because their own bot is so basic a cat photo can get marked as nsfw. The sexist language in their new policy is disgusting. The banning of the chronic pain tag, which was reinstated, was so offending and horrendous I could not believe it..Version: 12.2

It has its downsides...I've had the tumblr app for quite some time and all was fine. I mean, it froze quite a lot and sometimes just wouldn't open at all (or rather, it would open and then close straight away, sometimes for weeks at a time) but it was tolerable. However, now it won't let me post pictures. It crashes every time I click 'photo', and it does this on both my iPad and iPhone. I've updated the app until there are no more updates available and it still does it. A piece of advice for people who want to tumblr from mobile; don't. You will have no hair left after a month or so, because you will have ripped it all out in large chunks. Right, a bloody update to my review over a year (I think closer to 2 actually) later. This app is a joke. You can't reply to bloody replies to your posts, sometimes the notifications just don't show up, sometimes messages just don't come through at all, I could go on. Look, tumblr, you make so many improvements, and some of them are good (being able to reblog and add a photo is an example) but seriously, just think more basically. Just stick to making sure the app opens, for a start. Simple is beautiful..Version: 9.3

Keeps crashing when I open posts??This has been happening for a while now. Sometimes it’ll just crash while I’m scrolling through, but now it’s started crashing when I open posts. It’ll stutter when I scroll through the post, then crash a few seconds later before I’ve read the thing, then I have to reopen the app and painstakingly try and find the post I was looking at, and try and read it quickly before the app crashes on me again..Version: 17.5

TrashI had over 17,000 followers for my adult content nsfw page until you removed all of that and basically made all my work and my entire blog null. There were nsfw features for a reason and shouldn’t have been viewed by anyone under 18+ anyways. Realize who your users were, mostly adults, and tumblr has been trash ever since. Bring back our nsfw content. You’re failing..Version: 14.7

‘Open in app’ alerts when using the appFrustrating to use at best. Links to other Tumblr pages open in a web browser pop-up, rather than in the app itself. This results in a giant blue button suggested you should use the app. THIS IS WHAT IM TRYING TO DO. The button either does nothing, as your pop-up is now blocking access to the app, or takes you to the App Store to download the app you already have. Solution? Open in Safari > back to Tumblr to close pop up > back Safari to Open in App > view your page in the app. So what’s the point in having the app in the first place?!.Version: 22.0

Let’s cut to the chaseTUMBLR is, at least to a large extent, a very good porn site. Adults ought to be free to make their own decisions about the content they choose to view and contribute. TMBLR is free to set its own moderation policies. The way TUMBLR has approached this reality- and I understand the choices it has made, and why- has been an attempt to reach a middle ground, but it has been lackluster. In the 21st century, there are ways to set age limits for certain content, to moderate very highly offensive and illegal content reasonably well, and to do so without punishing the conscientious and law abiding adults that want to exercise their perfectly sound inclination to engage porn. Content providers should tag content as porn and the app should filter pornographic content for all accept those that opt to view/contribute porn. For those users that opt, require some authentication that has a reasonable association with age, and make it binding. If the user is caught lying about their age, ban them- ban their isp# or whatever number IDs their device, etc. If the content provider fails to tag content, ban them. If a user posts illegal content, block them, give them an opportunity to appeal, and then block them if they don’t or if the appeal fails. TUMBLR is a great app- for all things, not only porn. It’s a worthy contender, and more than anything it can support the (legal, ethical) interests of everyone… users, advertisers, TUMBLR, and even the US Congress..Version: 20.1

Potential to be great- selling outI’ve been on Tumblr for at least 10 years and it’s a social media site I adore. As it existed before they started making broad “improvements”. Tumblr has been recently making some nice changes (adding polls, streamlining old features, attempting to highlight some of the artists using the site). But more so, it’s been making a lot of ‘improvements’ that make the site a lot worse. Tumblr Live was added to the site despite no one using it. It can’t be opted out of, and it also data mines information from those who do use it. There have been updates to the video player and the photo viewer that make it impossible to zoom in and WAY too easy to swipe into more videos I didn’t ask for and didn’t want. Most importantly, in an attempt to “streamline” the application, they’re trying to collapse Reblogs. So instead of being able to have a conversation with other users and share a sense of community, the website will function like a comment section on Facebook. I adore Tumblr, for what it CAN be. A unique, chronologically ordered dashboard with so much interaction and creativity. And I’m terrified that it’s hurtling towards what’s “trending” (ie: what makes other social media so annoying and unusable for me) to try and gain some of the traffic from those websites. I think allowing Tumblr to stay as unique as it is is the healthiest possible thing for the site. Because if I wanted anything else, I would’ve just downloaded Tiktok..Version: 30.3

Won't stop crashing + update summaries are frustratingKeeps crashing a few seconds after opening, making it unusable. The only way of fixing it is to redownload the app. This happens at least once a day, often more than that. This has not been fixed for several updates. Everytime there's an update, the update summary is some ridiculous text that tries to be witty or strange, but it's not. It's not cute. It's annoying because we have no idea what is being changed in the update, and, knowing Tumblr, it could be some app-breaking bug-riddled nonsense that isn't even worth downloading.Version: 9.2.1

Editor isn’t the same as the webTrying to write a post and due to the nature of what I’m writing I need the ability to add a “Read More” tag. It’s impossible reading some older posts for older versions of Tumblr it seems the ability used to be there but was taken away in later versions for some inexplicable reason. Deleting this app and just using the web version because this version is useless..Version: 13.6

Sadly getting worseI have always enjoyed tumblr. Even though the app is an absolute mess: random crashes, The many many ads make the dashboard glitch, and sometimes it just refuses to load the next posts despite perfect internet connection. But the thing I'm really concerned by are the planned changes, specifically the plan to collapse reblogs. This would fundamentally change the way that people on tumblr interact. The collaborative nature of these kinds of reblogs and add-ons and different chains that originated from the same original post - all that is literally why a lot of people joined tumblr. If this were to be taken away, I know for a fact that a large chunk of the userbase - me included - would be forced to leave. I don't understand why the management is doing this right now. Our community has had so much positive attention lately as a sanctuary from toxic sites. Now we are instead getting negative attention for trying to turn this into another toxic site. Why??.Version: 30.3

Terrible App After Adult Content BanAfter Yahoo bought Tumblr, the whole platform went up in flames. Tumblr was my absolute favourite website until the adult content ban. My blog is marked as “sensitive content” which means I can no longer view my own blog. I understand that the adult content ban was because of legal issues that Tumblr was facing but Tumblr should implement a monitoring system that bans/deletes blogs that engage in actual criminal activity. Tumblr should at least allow the 18+ user to view their own blog. I’ve had my blog for over 7 years and because my blog is flagged as “sensitive content” I can’t view any of my posts at all. This app did not age well..Version: 17.2

Sadly disappointed in a once amazing appTumblr has been a place I’ve come to for years to express myself. It’s somewhat my secret outlet. Having an app available is super convenient and I honestly prefer to use the app versus a desktop. If there wasn’t an app available i probably wouldn’t even use tumblr anymore. It’s extremely annoying when you’re in the middle of using the app and it crashes out of nowhere exiting you out the app. It seems like every time you guys update the app to fix bugs etc. there’s just another bug that’s created. How difficult can it possible be to finally get this right. Don’t update the app if you’re not sure it’s absolutely going to fix the problem. Sometimes posts are missing from my blog or others. I can’t even refresh my notifications without it freezing and me having to exit out he app and enter into the app again just to see new notifications. I can’t even view my drafts on one tab without exiting out my blog, which was one of my favorite features. Now I have to go to settings to view my drafts which is INCONVENIENT! Would be 5 stars if I didn’t have to exit the app 20 times a day just to use it. Using tumblr shouldn’t be a job people. Fix it or you’re going to lose people’s interest in a great website..Version: 10.4.1

Unsafe, unusable and badly runAt this point, the new updates make tumblr unusable and unsafe for most people. With blocking tags that content creators use such as “my post” “my gifs” they are preventing their users from sharing their work. With blocking tags to keep people safe such as “trigger warning” “transphobia” and “suicide prevention” they are making the site actively hostile and unsafe for users who can no longer effectively manage the content they see. With blocking tags that disabled people use such as “spoonie” and “stimboard” they are making it even harder for disabled people to find resources. With blocking tags that everyone might use such as “arms” “girl” and “video” they are making the whole site unusable for everyone. Long story short, don’t bother getting tumblr until they try to make genuine improvements that benefit the users rather than their empty pockets..Version: 22.5.1

Recent changes are so disappointingThe app is honestly so infuriating to use and the mobile browser version isnt much better . like i love tumblr but its app and its website are just completely going down the toilet. its like theyre trying so hard to get rid of all the parts of tumblr that make it unique and special so it can be a little bit more like twitter because thats such a great platform ! it is impossible to fully block posts that have flashing lights in them because you have to manually enter every possible permutation of 'cw flashing' 'flashing gif tw' 'flashing lights' 'strobe lights warning' etc to have a hope of not seeing those posts right in front of your eyeballs. and THEN there are ads that just have flashing lights anyway like. thanks so much for showing how considerate you are about people with epilepsy and photosensitivity. the app is not good to use. if you can please use the desktop version because you can actually customise it with extensions to fix the horrible cramped twitter-esque layout and properly block posts.Version: 31.1

Copying the mistakes of their competition, rather than focusing on the things they got right.Tumblr has recently introduced a live streaming video service, which is so contrary go the purpose, and usage of the service that it sounds like a joke to say. They have replaced critical UI elements with a merch store and this video service, the replaced buttons are the Search Tab, and the User tab. Both are unusable on the most recent version as of posting. The tumblr developers seem intent on killing the site for good, there are many awful design decisions that users have just put up with, but we're nearing the knife's edge on what even can be put up with. Since this was originally written, they have continued to make the platform worse in order to appeal to an hypothetical new audience, while making the experience of their (considerably larger) existing audience worse..Version: 30.3

New policy is driving out Tumblr usersOh please...we understand child porn isn't appropriate, but it doesn't represent Tumblr users as a whole. Tumblr used to be a safe haven for nsfw artists, and now it's absolutely eating its own vomit out of a garbage can. If we don't make enough sounds, these greedy corporate people will never see us..Version: 12.3.1

Dying websiteThe latest update ruins the functionality of what was already an infamously flawed website. There are more features that don’t work than ones that do. Sometimes it feels like tumblr is run by a single coder alone in a basement. Tumblr has discarded a community they’ve spent 10 years fostering with an automatic filter that makes it impossible to know whether or not your innocuous content can currently be seen by other users, and fails to target the genuine adult content as intended. Communication between tumblr and its users continues to be abysmal. Staff continue to lie about non-existent notifications and site features that have not worked for years (including the backup feature that we were told to rely on to save our blogs before the removal of all flagged posts). The appeal function for the new automatic flagging was temperamental before the update went live, and now it is completely non-functional. Meanwhile the site is still full of spambots and no effort has been made to curb the growing community of white nationalists. Tumblr once had value that other sites do not. Before this update I could not recommend you use tumblr on mobile as the x-kit browser extension is necessary to make the site functional. After this update I don’t think I can recommend tumblr at all. It won’t survive much longer..Version: 12.3

Can’t post photos or send anySo I can’t post or send photos, I was trying to do a tag game I got tagged in by some mutuals and have tried posting it several times but keep getting error messages when I try to dm them or when I’m just making a post. It will post when I just have text so idk what’s going on..Version: 31.0

I used to adore tumblrI was a big advocate for tumblr until this recent ban they put in place! I can’t believe it! This was such a wonderful and SAFE place to explore yourself and learn more about yourself. And come on! No female nipples anymore?! Are you serious?! I had a post flagged because it was a classical art painting of Venus and A little cherub Cupid and it was flagged as against guidelines because you could see her nipples! I also had a gif of Slash (the guitarist) playing guitar on stage... get flagged?!?!?! I mean yeah he looks like he’s climaxing but he’s not he’s playing guitar on stage to thousands of people!!!! It’s all so absurd. So much great content is gone..Version: 12.3

⚠️ ⚠️⚠️WARNING⚠️⚠️⚠️Was bored during the latest coronavirus lockdown & decided to download this app for something to do. What a waste of my time that was. You cannot do ANYTHING on the app which freezes lags or trips your phone battery. My iPhone is now riddled with bugs & viruses had to send my phone back to Apple for them to remove the all viruses down to this app. I’m absolutely fuming about it. Mark my words I’ll be sending you the bill for my phone repairs!!!!!!!!!!probably has to be the WORSE APP EVER. You email the app developers who took 18mths to reply with an automated message. Why? Because they don’t care as long as you’re downloading this bullsh** app so they can rake the money in they don’t care. Save yourself time & hassle just don’t bother downloading. As for you ignoramus app developers I’ll be reporting this app to Apple, fingers crossed it’ll be taken off the App Store. This app has absolutely ruined my phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THIS APP IS A WASTE OF TIME AS WELL AS YOUR INTERNET YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️.Version: 17.7

Bugs and limitationsWow. Years of my work wasted, since tumblr has decided that artistic nude photography is forbidden. Useless Calvinist puritans. Byeeee..Version: 13.6

Content ban did more harm than goodThe over-the-top content ban has effectively killed the site. Staff said it was implemented to stop the CP and the bots. Almost 2 months after the ban, both of these things still exist and non-NSFW content is being flagged instead. Also note that they take issue with anything that involves nudity (including artwork), but all the white supremacist/Nazi blogs are fine, apparently. Furthermore, this blanket-ban tends to affect LGBT+ content, even when it’s completely innocent. Is there some kind of sneaky right-wing agenda I’m unaware of? It’s ridiculous. tumblr has been a safe haven for years, and now, because the app was pulled from the store, the powers that be decided that money was more important than their user base. This whole thing wouldn’t be quite so bad if the ban actually did what it was supposed to, but they can’t even get this right. The CP/bots situation could have easily been remedied if they were prepared to do some actual moderation. They didn’t even need to have staff do it; I’m sure plenty of users would have been happy to step in to help their platform. But no, seemingly an automated NSFW content ban was better, presumably because this means the least work to do to get the app back in the store and keep the money coming in. If anyone reading this doesn’t have a tumblr blog and is thinking about starting one, don’t bother; this site’s best years are well behind it..Version: 12.7

Going downhill fastI’ve been on this site for over a decade and not once has search been fully functional, needing work arounds in order to find what you’re actually looking for. That should be the first priority. But instead of working on that developers decided to collapse reblog chains, making conversations that made the site fun to use take a back seat and leaving everyone who doesn’t expand a reblog chain open to even more misinformation than there already is. They’re talking about expanding the notes button into replies, reblogs and likes, similar to another failing blue website that enjoys playing numbers games with users, whether or not it may affect their mental health. They changed the photo viewer into a ux nightmare that’s impossible to leave unless you know how to get out. the video player has transformed into a tiktok clone where if you swipe wrong you could end up on another video from another post that’s not even on your dashboard. STOP trying to be twitter STOP trying to be tiktok and WORK ON THE SITES ACTUAL ISSUES. If people don’t know how to use a site just TELL THEM. If the site rolls back these changes and dedicates themselves to bettering the platform they have rather than cloning another one then I’ll put my money where my mouth is and buy as much merch and ad free as I can. If your investors want a bad product then they can be my guest, but I’m not sticking around for it..Version: 30.4

Love the people, hate the appI love the idea of Tumblr as a site, and the app initially was amazing to be able to use. In the last few weeks/months it has become increasingly frustrating to use. The 18+ ban has done nothing to actually remove pornbots from the site, and has only made life harder for artists and writers. The app has also started to crash every 10 minutes, which leaves me with a blank screen before the app closes and my feed resets, leaving me with few new posts, but 10 minutes of content to scroll through..Version: 12.9

Bring back the OG formatTumblr used to be so cool Bc you could look at all your posts in a grid and even set up 🤤 infinite scroll 🤤. The grid view was even better than Instagram's because you could have more columns and control the view size of your posts. Everything you'd posted or reblogged, everything that made you you, was just right there in a huge collage and you could control its aesthetic and theme. But now there's no way to control the look of your page. It's just a buggy slow-loading scroll of your recent posts interrupted by adds and overlain with banners on a white background whether you like it or not, one post at a time. Everyone I know personally who has abandoned tumblr has abandoned it for this specific reason alone. Stop trying to mimic other social media sites. Realize what you are. Even Instagram has a grid for you and even Pinterest lets you create boards and Blogger lets you control the whole look of your page. If you want tumblr to have a resurgence stop looking to what others are doing and remember what made tumblr tumblr in the first place. Everyone loved designing their tumblrs so much that WE ALL LEARNED BASIC HTML in order to make the changes we desired. That's how important the web design of our personal collections was to us. That's how big a part of the tumblr experience your own gallery was. The people who made these devastating changes completely missed that part..Version: 26.6

Shareholders > users makes the app worseOne of the main reasons people use tumblr, if not the main reason, bar none, is the fact that it is not like other social media applications. Older web blog features, anonymity, a plethora of text based features. These are the things that make the app and the community what it is. Tumblr is slowly phasing out all of these things. They’ve introduced a third party live video feature that eats up storage on your phone, mines your data, and is illegal in most parts of the world. They’re making reblogs collapsed so you won’t see the conversation on the most on your main feed. They’ve made this terrible photo and video viewer that mimics tiktok so you can’t even zoom in on a photo. They’re making it so you have to sign in with your email to view anything on their website. These are all things they promise to shareholders will make them more money. Like most social apps that make these promises to shareholders, it is a lie. A lie they tell themselves and others. Tumblr is a place I love to be. But as things press on, the less I want to use it to talk to my friends or view content. Web 2.0 is dying unceremoniously. This used to feel like the last place you could genuinely connect . Sad to see where things have gone.Version: 30.3

Awful app layoutYou know, the app was perfectly functional and easy to navigate before, but now Every Other Day the app layout changes for the worst. It is impossible to navigate the app or have a good time. Half of the new functions are useless to me but they’re being shoved in my face or taken away just to be reintroduced in a new impossible layout. Dude..Version: 28.4

Ya messed up bruAll ya had to do was get rid of the bots but no you mess up the whole site..Version: 12.3.1

Weak sauceStupid new changes make the service useless. They are removing nsfw works but with it comes the issue of adding a flagging system that is unable to operate properly causing supposedly acceptable works to be removed. There stalks have tanked and the value in the site has ended abruptly..Version: 12.5

Upcoming changes fundamentally change appI'm writing a review in concern of upcoming changes listed by staff. One of which, introducing collapsible reblog chains introduces much friction in the general user journey, that it'll for certain drive away a large portion of the current user base. Changes made to lessen the learning curve for new users shift tumblr away from a blog platform into a social media platform. I'm against these changes, including the new web dashboard UI. Please listen to your users, ditch the corporatespeak, because there are revenue streams available once a connection has been made. I don't want to lose the platform where I've fostered over a decade of my interests and have met some of my closest friends..Version: 30.5

I only like to people on tumblr, the app itself? Lord help meI’ll try to make it short with dot points as to why tumblr is rapidly getting worse. •P*rn bots. I get up to nine or ten new p*rn bots following me every day. •The new icon is horrific, what even is this ugly flaccid pickle wizard? •The newest update made it so to look at your page, you need to click in the top right instead of near everything else on the bottom. Now on the bottom right? Tumblr mart. Who uses tumblr mart? Also; now, when you’re on your account page, you can’t make a new post. You have to press ‘x’ to go back, then you can make a post. •Ads are everywhere now, and if they’re ever inappropriate, you can report them or say ‘don’t see this ad’ •The community labels are ridiculous I love the people I follow on tumblr, but I hate this most recent update: so much so that I felt the need to leave a negative review. Put things back where they were. No one wants the mart there, I want to access my page on the bottom- where it’s always been and should be. And please, make that ugly icon normal again. It’s embarrassing. And ftlog please sort out the insane amounts of p*rn bots..Version: 28.5

Frustrating to UseThis app is just frustrating to use. Every single time I go on only the first few posts will load and then after that nothing. Wifi and everything else seems to be working fine but posts on the app just won’t load. Also if I manage to find a page that loads, after a few minutes the app crashes and closes by itself. Waste of time trying to use it really..Version: 12.8

User for 10 yearsFor the past 10 years I’ve loved this site/app. I love the community feel, the collaborative nature of the website, and the fact that small time creators can reach their audience. However I think that recent proposals and changes to the site are detrimental to the things I love most. Some algorithm stuff is good BUT I love the fact that it is an opt in function rather than the norm because I want to follow the people I choose and see what they post most of all. The proposal - from the latest proposal- to make reblogs collapsible will ruin tumblr. Part of what I like is the community aspect, one person saying one thing and many others following on from that until there’s a whole post with 3,5,10,20 people collaborating to make something informative or funny. It’s like a group discussion. There is a reason I never took to Twitter or Instagram or tiktok, there *was* a reason I stood by tumblr in the past. I can’t speak about tumblr live because I’m not American but anything that steals data from its users is no friend of mine, also I’ve heard it’s really annoying. I hate to leave one star on anything, but these new changes aren’t what makes tumblr tumblr, they’re actively ruining it..Version: 27.4

Full of Nazi stuffThere’s so much Nazi stuff on this site that my daughter now thinks that Hitler was a God! But thank the Lord, they’re is no more sex stuff!!.Version: 12.6

Going downhillI love tumblr, it's my main social site and I love the fact it's a remnant of old-style internet. It has many features that I like. But tumblr is rapidly making changes that the majority of the user base is against. They are removing major features of the site that are the reason people still use tumblr, such as collapsing reblog chains so that you can't see the entire conversation (why?? What's the point in changing that? Nobody wants you to change that). Instead leaving features such as tumblr live that half the users can't even use anyway, and even if they could they wouldn't want to. Stop changing the things that actually make people like and use your site, and listen to the user base instead. Removing all the likeable features, alienating the user base, these are just sure fire ways to make your site ACTUALLY die..Version: 30.3

13 year user - bad tumblr policyI don’t support the changes recently outlined to come by this app in their recent news post. I want reverse-chronological newsfeeds based on who I follow only. I don’t want suggestions. If you insist on making suggestions, then you should apply those changes strictly to the “for you” tab. It’s a click away. Even the people you seem to think too stupid to use the platform, which you are somehow trying to lure to be content creators, could figure that one out. It just makes the site absolutely worthless. Tumblr itself is not a subreddit or facebook or twitter page showcasing “the best of tumblr” or something. The claims about trying to showcase newer users just seems incredibly stupid. If they are humans that want to connect with other people, then they should be making posts that you can connect with others of its kind through pre-existing functions. For example: tumblr search, tumblr tags, recommended blogs, recommended posts, because you liked! posts, liked by people you follow, for you page, the list goes on. On top of that, the bot problem is horrible and the blogs most likely to be promoted by this stupid system will be bots. Guess there’s that to look forward to. Tumblr will not beat out competitors or gain interest by copying other social media platforms, poorly. Fix the assets you have and make them function, stop building a treehouse on a tree with dying roots..Version: 30.3

Tumblr has become a terrible appI never usually leave reviews but tumblr has gotten so bad to the point where I must complain. On mobile app, even if my wifi works perfectly fine, it will say “no post” when clearly there is. I have to frequently restart the app and shut down my phone to get it to work. It’s terrible slow and while i genuinely do love the app, you guys clearly aren’t listening to our reviews or trying to make anything any better. I read a review from a year ago and the exact same problems are still occurring for me. To be quite frank i think whoever controls the algorithms for this app needs to get their head straight and fix it asap. It’s extremely bad for the apps publicity to get such terrible reviews and i hope you guys address this serious issue before it gets too late and everyone discards this app. Major app fixing needs to be completed, no need to change the layout or anything just to make it seem like you guys are trying because that’s not what your receivers would appreciate. I hope for a great improvement soon..Version: 12.7

Censorship...Bring back the nudity!!.Version: 13.4

Fix thisCall me when Tumblr stops flagging well-intentioned bloggers and finally gets rid of the pr0nbots and nazis..Version: 12.4

Tumblr mart is stupid bring back blogThe tumblr mart being right where the blog spot use to be is insanely annoying. The latest update has been a step in completely the wrong direction. And not being able to access your blog without going back to the home page (which looses ur place if you click and scroll through a tag from your home page) is an insanely weird thing to do. I study design and even some of the less creative people in the class wouldn’t do this especially as it’s been like that for so long and is now catching out so many long term users like me. Please fix.Version: 28.3

Deserves 0 stars. DO NOT SIGN UP.While every other social media site crumbles, all tumblr had to do was not shoot themself in the foot. well it seems like theyre trying to shoot themself on purpose because NONE of the new changes being rolled in are good. we do not want algorithms. we do not care about for you pages. we do not want tumblr live. we want to see posts in chronological order. we want to be able to see reblog chains. we want to be able to see prev tags. we want custom themes. we want tumblr to be tumblr, not another tiktok or twitter or instagram clone. if you are thinking of joining tumblr bc youve heard how good it is, forget about it because its not good anymore. staff actively HATE THEIR USERBASE. if you want to use tiktok use that app if you want twitter use that app. tumblr trying to be like that wont make tumblr better, because the things that made tumblr good in the first place was that it DIDNT have features like those sites/apps. its uniqueness is what made it good. now its just a worse buggier version of already existing apps. do not download..Version: 30.3

FrustratingI very rarely review apps but this one is so irritating I felt I had to just in the hopes they might read their reviews and fix it accordingly. I like tumblr and want to use it but this app is so incredibly laggy and often freezes too much for it to be even useable, it collects a huge cache within minutes which keeps getting bigger until the app takes up insane amounts of storage on my phone, so I have to go into the app settings and clear the cache literally every ten minutes while I’m using tumblr so that the app will stop lagging so much. Audio posts also are never playable (in my experience), but the most irritating thing of all is to probably how the app will refresh/crash randomly and throw me back up to the top of my feed where I could either look at posts I’ve already seen or try to scroll all the way back down to where I was. It also doesn’t hold your place if you check another app, even if you leave tumblr open in the background. Even using the web version instead of the app is a better experience even though this means I cannot reblog anything without it refreshing my feed. I like still like tumblr despite its many failings, but this app is almost completely unusable..Version: 12.7

Was great but has turned sourUsed to love using this app, but now it’s so glitchy. I’d try to open a post to read and then my screen would turn black and it would shut down, loosing the progress of where I was. If I luckily hearted something and tried to go back to it, it would glitch again. Sometimes it’s on the same post and others it’s not. Wanting to read something and then having to try and search it on the web browser is the most annoying thing. What was most annoying was when they changed the search algorithm. If I had a term followed such as polar bears, and I pressed on the little square that says that, it would say “sorry there’s nothing new” for recent or “sincerely we found nothing” for top searches. But if I take the long way and type polar bears into the search bar myself then I’ll see HEAPS AND HEAPS, of post on both recent and top. Why implement something that not going to work. I understand why they had to start putting in some new algorithms for inappropriate things, but that kinda what the platform was built on. But when they’ve started all these new changes it’s just been destroying the communities that are on here, and disrupting the flow of trying to search for things. No one is probably going to read this but it’s still upsetting every time I open this app it glitches and doesn’t actual show the correct search results..Version: 15.7

Thank u, next updateThe new font and colour scheme of this app is killing my eyes. However, if the last 5 years of being on this hellsite have shown me anything it’s that the staff refuses to listen to their user base on complaints so I guess we can all look forward to eye strain 🙃.Version: 12.6

New iOS tag blocking makes the safe unsafeOnce again, another update has come to Tumblr with little thought as to how it actually benefits - or rather, negatively affects - the community at large. Due to iOS guidelines, tumblr has been forced to block certain tags on the website. Sounds good, no? Well, actually, no. There is no official guide to what has been blocked, but while users expect actual harmful tags to be blocked, iOS and tumblr have instead decided to choose almost randomly. From tags as simple as ‘long post’ ‘submission’ or ‘my stuff’, to things like ‘mental health’ ‘trigger warning’ and ‘racism’. These tags were used to filter and control important topics, but now they cannot even be viewed. Heck, even tags like ‘Mary Jane’ and ‘queued’ are blocked, which makes incredibly little sense. With little to no communication from staff after this has been implemented users are, understandably, frustrated. While tumblr is an enjoyable hub for many updates like this do more harm than good for the community, who are no longer able to create safe spaces for themselves and others, talk upon important issues, nor even share their own creative endeavours. A very frustrating and disappointing step backward for this website and app, once again..Version: 22.5.1

ChangesThe website is changing its core identity to be like everyone else. It’s much easier to replace something that is the same and people already don’t like these changes. Nobody wants Tumblr Live (a dataminer trying to be like live tiktoks), and nobody wants the website to look more like twitter (which people are leaving en mass) If you want to use tumblr, at the very least don’t use the app, it is a glitchy mess, stick to the website, but with these changes that Tumblr keeps making that’s only making both the website worse and the app *even* worse because they’re not listening to users or using the poll feature to get user opinions themselves (polls being the only recent-ish addition that’s actually pretty good), it’s probably best to hop on a replacement like Cohost or do what been threatened for a while and go back to Internet 1.0 with personalised forums, a time when the internet was a little better and had individuality, which Tumblr is trying to rid itself of. I’d say “I expect them to start properly crumbling like Twitter and Reddit within a year or two.” but the self-titled Hellsite has survived worse, somehow… I still miss what it was, though..Version: 30.3

New update (Feb 2023) is terribleThis week’s new app update that replaced the account tab with a link to the merch store has finally prompted me to delete the app entirely. Can’t stand all the terrible changes being made that are reducing theaccessibility of the site. I can’t even scroll my own blog anymore because it’s in a whole separate screen! Absolutely bonkers decisions being made by staff on all fronts. Very disappointing..Version: 28.1

One step forward…Two steps back. They occasionally add a useful or wanted feature like polls. Then there’s things like Tumblr Live (which cannot be turned off, only snoozed for one month when you must turn it on and off again, and includes a permanent “new” bubble on the bottom row of tabs), the new dashboards, the continuous presence of bots and bigots, and things are just as annoying. Ads take ages to scroll past and are so sensitive that attempts to bypass them send you to the app store. They occasionally have sound, which will stop anything you are listening to and won’t stop until you pass the ad. The new post button has been moved from its typical center-bar place to a bubble above it like Twitter, meaning not only do I accidentally tap it often, any time I try to go to my notifications or the search bar I miss what I’m trying to tap because of their new locations. The tags button has been moved. Why? I cannot tell you how many times in the last week I have attempted to add tags to a post only to have a pop-up for ‘community labels’ appear. New tools don’t mean you have to reorganize the whole bench. I am also very disappointed in the appearance of tags. If I tap a tag to take me to the tag for the whole site, the format is drastically different than a standard search and cannot be filtered or sorted other than by ‘Top’ or ‘Latest’..Version: 31.1

Brand New ReviewI’ve reviewed before but gave it the same rating. Before Tumblr was a mess because of their bad coding — crashing after a little while of use, GIFs and images refusing to load almost constantly, videos not playing correctly, the list goes on. But the new algorithm for detecting NSFW content to be “kid friendly” when it was never meant to be a website for kids is lazy. Staff are condescending and don’t listen to the user base. Not only that, but a large portion of users are here for nsfw content. I understand that there is legal trouble and it’s not necessarily tumblr’s fault, but what is their fault is not doing anything about actually illegal content and instead punishing everyone whether they were involved or not. Porn bots are still rampant, neo-nazis and white nationalists and pedophiles are still free to roam while artists and content creators suffer greatly from the way this algorithm works. Up the age requirement to be on and keep your safe mode thing, it wasn’t perfect but it was way better than getting my post removed for having a single pixel of skin tones visible on a selfie or a piece of innocent fan art. The only reason this isn’t one star is because I’ve been using this site for years and years and it is honestly my favorite social media platform. It’s niche, doesn’t invade your privacy, and has a lot to offer within its user base. It has so much potential wasted by a terrible management..Version: 12.3.1

Staff is no longer trying to hide how little they care for their user baseI turned off autonatic updates on my phone Specifically so i wouldnt get this layest update and it STILL went through. since tumblr became more “profit motivated” or w/e the quality of the app has taken a STEEP decline. first there was blazing posts, which, for $10, allows you to submit your post so that 1000 random users will see it. since theyve rolled this feature out, theyve allowed proselytizing, multiple forms of bigotry, SU***DE NOTES, nsfw, and pointless venting to be blazed, all while claiming they have actual people review all the posts that are submitted before theyre blazed. after that they added a feature called “post+” i have no idea what it does because no one uses it. after that it only went downhill, with the addition of the tumblr store, an addition of a “tumblr live” feature that collects MOUNTAINS of data on you in an attempt to emulate tiktok, edited the image format so you can no longer zoom in and the video format so you cant rewind or fast forward videos, and replaced the account button on your toolbar with the tumblr shop button. the userbase has been telling staff over and over that we dont want any of this, and they wont listen. meanwhile theyll ban people for even slightly insulting anyone on staff while allowing LITERAL N*ZIS AND T*RFS to run rampant and refusing to do anything about them no matter how many times theyre reported. but sure, they added polls. great job staff..Version: 28.1

The recent updates :(Hi there long time tumblr user here. In your recent updates you’ve added collapsed reblogs, so users can no longer see a full conversation in a post. This is a terrible idea. You’re also keeping tumblr live, a feature that is a mine for data. This is a terrible idea. You’re also keeping it that you can’t permanently turn off tumblr live. This is a terrible idea. You also changed the photo viewer and now users can no longer zoom. This is a terrible idea. You also took away the ability to look at the previous tags. This is a terrible idea. You are taking away everything that makes tumblr good. Tumblr is great all on its own, you do not need to make it more like tiktok or Twitter. Doing so, will only make the current (and loyal) users leave the site. Please do not continue with these updates..Version: 30.3

Awful UpdateI have used tumblr since 2009, and it has become clear that its staff do not have their users best interests in mind. Remove the racists, the homophobia, the child pornography. But removing consensual, safe, personal adult content is absolutely ridiculous, it benefits no one. Bots with all kinds of crazy links are still allowed to post, censorship free. And to censor simply “women’s chests” is nuts. As a society we will never normalize all chests until things like this stop happening. Staff is targeting the wrong groups/people, no one asked for this..Version: 12.3.1

Stop trying to make tumblr into other, worse websitesThe website’s always been a bit buggy. I can deal with that. But right now it’s under active sabotage. It’s getting harder to see people’s previous tags, an important way that users talk to each other. Custom blog themes are being axed, which has already forced some historical photo blogs I liked to shut down. Now they’re trying to kill reblog chains, which are THE thing that makes the site unique and where the best posts usually come from. Why do I have to log in to see stuff?! Searching my tags on my own blog from within the mobile app doesn’t work - buggy, but I could deal by searching “#pose ref” in a browser tab. Now? No. Intentionally made nonfunctional. No one likes Tumblr Live (illegal in many countries due to privacy violations) or the For You page (now the default for new accounts). If I wanted TikTok… I would use TikTok. TikTok is a better TikTok than Tumblr. But I don’t. I want a low stress place to look at cool art and see my friends read Dracula. All staff has to do is remove these features that are getting on the user base’s nerves and reallow porn and Tumblr would be booming. As the rest of the Internet moves towards being an ad-packed, data mining cesspit where grown adults are deemed too stupid to decide whether or not they want to see a nutsack today, Tumblr has the chance to be different. And it should take it..Version: 30.3

Love it here as per usual, but the new live feature ruins the experience.I’m not often a review writer but I felt strongly about this. The live feature doesn’t sit well with me and other users. It forces content on you—content you do not follow, nor content related to what you follow. It doesn’t fit the rest of what tumblr has been about and is currently branding itself as (i.e. a place that’s not like any other place on the Internet, a place to find, follow, and connect over interests). It very much downgrades the Tumblr experience and feels out of place. Maybe it doesn’t need to be taken away entirely, but the way it’s shown on the app makes me want to not be on the app. When I’m shown irrelevant content that I do not want to see—that’s showing up under the following tab of my dash, without me having followed any of the users posting these lives—it takes me out of the moment and experience that is Tumblr. It easily pushes me out of the app. Y’all have felt like the break room of social media to me for a while now, so it saddens me to see this feature throw me (and many others) off enough to want to stop scrolling and hop off the app. It would be great if this feature could be presented in a less intrusive way, if the feature remains..Version: 28.0

Ban neo nazis and free the nippleStop whatever you’re trying (and failing) to do and listen. To. Your. Goddamn. Userbase ffs! Stop banning sexual content altogether and ban porn bots and neo nazis!!! Y’know the kind of thing that really has nothing to do on any website!.Version: 12.3.1

Invasive repeating ads ruin the timelineThe ads are more invasive than even Instagram, and there's no option to remove them or even hide a particular one that gets repeated ever forth post. No one appreciates ads, especially the same ad every time with no way to even remove it or see a different one. Wouldn't recommend the mobile app if you have the choice. Also, the fact that you censor tags that can help people filter unwanted content yet you have invasive gambling ads showing every 4 posts is disgusting. Really shows what your priorities are, forget suicide prevention, we really want you to install gambling apps..Version: 22.5.1

Having trouble with their most recently added feature, as usualFor some reason tumblr has never been able to consistently apply updates or new features. Most recently they came up with a group chat feature, which I did briefly get to experience, and then a day later it was gone again? Others have had no problem using the new feature and inviting me to group chats, but I’m unable to join any or make any of my own because the icon that should be there simply isn’t. I’m not going to claim that I know much about programming a website, but it seems incredibly strange to me that I could have a new feature one moment and then have it completely disappear the next. For anyone interested in joining tumblr, it’s probably worth knowing that this isn’t an uncommon experience. I don’t think there’s been a single update that hasn’t resulted in a barrage of posts on the platform complaining about exactly the same problem. And you can forget about contacting staff, as they are famously unhelpful. Possibly even the most unhelpful across all social media apps active today. In fact, in order for the dashboard site to even function, users have to download an add-on created by a third party for free (because he was so sick of having to use tumblr normally). How a website can go through so many owners and updates and STILL come out of it as the same barely functional and immensely frustrating product is beyond me..Version: 14.6

Worst update yetI dont think you understand how important to my app usage the location of the search function was. I NEED it to be a separate tab from my dashboard. I NEED to switch back and forth flawlessly. and i am NEVER EVER going to watch a livestream on this website. EVER. nor will i ever film one. thats not what this app is for.Version: 30.6.1

Disappointing changesI have been using tumblr for a long time now but some of these changes they’re implementing are making me consider deleting my account. proposed changes such as needing to log into tumblr to see anything, removing custom blog themes (which is something i’ve spent a lot of time doing and am proud of the result), collapsed reblogs, and promoting content creators are all features that i feel goes against what tumblr is about and disappoints me immensely. Tumblrs success is rooted in its community and interaction, and the timeline of changes will hurt that community. it’s success is its individuality over other social media’s. I’d even been considering purchasing fun decals like the “verification symbols” but I won’t be now..Version: 30.3

Why tumblr’s not worth 5 stars now (tl;dr included)It honestly for me is a five star experience. I love the idea of it and it’s just an amazing community to be in (mostly). But the two issues I have are the two biggest problems I think an app can face... First is the algorithm. Which is self explanatory if you live on the internet. The second is also kind of self explanatory, but I feel the need to input my own experience also. The support side of tumblr. The staff. There’s nothing good going on. When I first downloaded tumblr again, I couldn’t do anything with my account. Errors kept coming up and preventing me from having any kind of experience whatsoever. I emailed them to ask for help, and even today I have yet to receive a reply on what to do to remedy it. Since then I have been able to fix what happened, but no thanks to them. I got one reply a week after I reached out to them which was obviously a standard issue mail-merge message to say “have you tried doing xyz”. Nothing since replying to that email, which I was instructed to do once I checked everything on their list. TL;DR: Algorithm needs fixing and staff aren’t any help.Version: 12.3

Hostile user interface and staff hate usThe latest update really goes to show how little the staff actually care about their user base. Banning basic words in tags such as ‘girl’ and ‘lace’ and ‘me’??? This is just harmful to the microblogging platform for all sorts of people, especially artists and writers. Why are you trying to alienate your user base? This so-called ‘censorship’ does nothing to prevent NSFW content and simply makes it harder for people to engage with each other. The English language isn’t something to be ‘cut’ (oh look, another banned tag) at the ‘request’ of the ‘self’-important few in a sloppy Orwellian attempt at enforcing ‘submisson’. Stop blaming Apple for your staff’s basic lack of consideration and common sense, otherwise we’ll all just leave and find another platform that’s kinder to fandom spaces. It’s happened before, and if things keep going the way they are, I’m sure it’ll happen again..Version: 22.5.1

You shouldn't bother, staff doesn't careDon't download the tumblr app. Staff just keeps making it worse and worse for the user base. They haven't done anything meaningful about the bot problem or the hate-speech problem in years and anything they have tried tends to just punish vulnerable people in the end rather than fix anything, like LGBTQ+ people, as an example, although it negatively affects a lot more people. If you can think of any person who is not cis, white, straight, neurotypical, and abled, then Staff's incompetence and lack of action will negatively impact your experience. They've also been making changes to it that only benefit companies and shareholders while making things worse and less accessible for all users. There are too many ads. No one actually uses tumblr live. Stop trying to be tiktok. It's annoying. Why can I only snooze it for a week before I have to turn it off and back on again? That should be a permanent setting. And why can't I double tap to zoom in on images anymore? Why will it show me random images I didn't ask for when I'm trying to view a specific one or a photoset on a post? Stop trying to push stuff I didn't curate for myself! It's the only reason why I like tumblr compared to other soc media these days! Stop trying to push algorithms! Let me curate my own stuff! Actually listen to us when we tell you something is messed up, Staff! Don't give tumblr your time, attention, or money. It will be wasted..Version: 30.2

Incompetent GarbageLook I’ve been on tumblr for a while. But in recent years its gone downhill and its not getting better. The recent changes to the community guidelines would have been fine, if things had been implemented properly. As it stands, they’ve given us a broken algorithm which flags sfw posts as being sexual or adult content. Posts like photos of mushrooms or drawings of bears. The actual issue - the rampant pornbots - is still prevalent, because tumblr has done nothing to fix it. Sfw bloggers are being affected by this, and marking your posts to be reviewed does nothing, because they are not reviewed by a real person and are instead put through the algorithm again. This buffoonery needs to end. Either hire competent programmers to run your website or cut your losses. You are driving away your userbase. Tumblr is barely more than a laughing stock and the only reason people are still using this app and website is because there are no viable alternatives..Version: 12.5

The staff aren’t doing greatI have used tumblr for longer than I can remember, dedicated an unhealthy portion of my life to it. But the Staff are about one step away from losing me forever. The blogs they’ve suspended featured consenting adults partaking on an activity they enjoyed for their followers, who wanted to see it. Not my kind of thing, but in 99% of occasions, I didn’t see it, and I was perfectly content knowing that other people were enjoying their own thing. The one’s they’ve left up? Feature actual Nazis, with all the racist, xenophobic and disgusting views and content that those entail. They feature inappropriate, illegal content which causes harm to children, and bots which spread this content across the site. THESE are the issues that needed to be combated. And yet they’re the blogs that still exist. Staff have, not for the first time, alienated a larger chunk of their user base by making an ill-informed, unnecessary decision without ever consulting the people it would harm. Let’s hope they consider listening to their users while there’s still a few left..Version: 12.3.1

Stop making useless updates and fix existing problemsI love tumblr but this app crashes like 18 times a day over quite literally nothing. They seem to be focused on constant, confusing UI updates changing everything about it that makes it enjoyable to use, and that as far as I know no one was even asking for. They seem to be prioritising getting engagement from new users instead of realising that all the loyal users who have been there for 10 years have been doing it with a variety of browser extensions and tricks. I’ve suddenly gotten a tumblr live update which they tel me I can snooze (not permanently switch off) in the settings, and when I did that nothing happened. They are only making this app more and more unusable and I cannot understand why because tumblr’s strength has always been that it ISN’T twitter or tiktok..Version: 30.6.1

CensorshipCensoring random words like “about” or even the word “girl” is weird and shows a want to control the user base. Banning mental health words like “mentally illness”, “depression” and “anxiety” show a level of ablism platform wise. Why can’t people talk about their issues? Censoring the the word “CW” is an issue as it stands for content warning. People put that stuff in so they don’t trigger someone. Again, the ablism. Then the censorship of the word “girl” and “girls” shows a level of sexism. Also the censorship of “homo” can be seen as a level of homophobia. Funny. Idk what made this change, but clearly no one in the room who made these choices actually knows what they are doing and should be fired..Version: 22.5.1

Terrible appI’ve been using tumblr for several years now but i hate the direction it’s being going recently. the app forces me to click on ads because they take up the entire screen, while desktop has become a bad twitter clone. tumblr flags certain trans-related tags as mature while positioning itself as ‘the queerest place on the internet’. multiple blogs have been completely deleted from the servers against the will of their owners after criticising the way the site runs - the earliest example of this that i remember was because the user pointed out that a staff member liked harry potter and joked that that was why harassment against trans users was going unaddressed. this is extremely unprofessional behaviour from staff to say the least. all staff seem to care about is squeezing their userbase for money via ad-free and merch and imitating other sites like tiktok (with the recent tumblr live update) and twitter in an attempt to draw more users to the site. their existing userbase is completely neglected. it’s a real shame that i have had to delete tumblr, i love the community on there and it was easily my favourite social media site, but over the past few months it’s become basically unusable. i do hope to re-download it soon, but only if staff get their act together and make a usable app that feels like tumblr, instead of a money-hungry twittertok clone..Version: 31.1

Used to be goodI’m a long time user and it’s saddening to see developers try to turn this into TikTok/twitter instead of working on fixing existing issues and implementing features that users have asked for. The search function is still a mess and for some reason the developers seem allergic to implementing a mute function (no, blocking is not the same.) It’s concerning that they’ve taken away the ability to check a previous reblog when this has been an essential part of the user experience. The only thing keeping me here is the chronological dashboard and tagging system (and even that is limited). It’s a pity, it used to be a nice website (its flaws were almost endearing but now they’re actively taking away from the user experience). I’m someone who would be happy to support the website financially but not if it keeps going in this direction. Again, please give us a mute function..Version: 30.4

Push notifications not workingI love the tumblr app and it’s super handy, however I haven’t been getting any push notifications coming through on my phone, therefore when someone messages me I actually have to go into the app to check. It’s super annoying, please fix this. I’ve tried looking online as well and have done everything suggested but it still isn’t working!!.Version: 10.8.1

The new updates are concerning.I love the community on tumblr, and it’s absolutely been an incredible experience. However- with the recent changes on Twitter, Reddit, and Tiktok this app has been changing too. It’s been changing to take on more of those apps “good features” to make it more palatable to audiences coming in. Those that have used tumblr for a long time are becoming increasingly annoyed with the updates to the desktop and the mobile apps. Many tumblr users don’t want collapsible reblogs, or to log in to view anything like on Twitter. It’s a severe deviation from how tumblr has consistently thrived off of old web functions. Taking away some users abilities to access the original post from their url is a huge issue that comes to mind, as well as the change to where the post button sits. Tumblr has a lot of amazing features but making something like “tumblr live” a thing that you can’t permanently turn off on your dash, when it’s nothing but clunky and as tan is concerning. I urge tumblr to look at the concerns that your og user base has. The whole reason people are coming from other apps is because they are rapidly seeing the functionality of these apps go down hill. Tumblr has been an amazing community for years now. I would hate to see its customization and community worn down due to add ons NO ONE asked for..Version: 30.3

My phone feels like a hot coalIdk what it is about the last update but weird ui changes and more frequent ads that everyone despises aside, i can't use this app without my phone trying to set itself on fire anymore. This only started becoming an issue a few WEEKS ago, and i know it isn't the hotter weather affecting it because it was this hot this time last year too and my phone was completely fine. That's not to mention the fact that the app completely refuses to reblog posts sometimes, despite me being well under the daily limit - this has also affected how hot my phone gets, bringing us full circle. I don't particularly feel like getting burnt hands because of some coding in the app making my phone going into overdrive just to keep everything loaded..Version: 30.0

I love Tumblr, I hate this appThis app has so many issues that have yet to be solved after at least a year or two of them existing. Despite the messaging system, which I’m sure has been critiqued plenty, inconsistently and unreliably updating or not updating while you’re using the app- you also can’t click on asks or even keep track of your asks in any way through the app. If you want to go look at one of your apps, you had better be keeping constant track of whoever asked it because all you’re going to get is a notification, and clicking on the notification (if it was answered) only takes you to the person’s profile. The app will randomly crash for seemingly no reason, even while under little to no stress. The double-click-to-like feature doesn’t work unless you tap a large body of text or an image and even then, it may not register properly (maybe user error but still inconvenient). You also can’t keep track of submissions in any way unless you just miraculously remember- I think you get notified but I don’t even think you get that much. Aside from all this, there’s a myriad of other functionalities and nuances that are almost entirely unimportant (like how if you click on a person’s name that’s attached to a post, it’ll take you to a dedicated page with nothing but that post and a couple other posts from that person’s profile below it). This was a poorly-thought-through review but I think it covers most bases. Otherwise, it works enough..Version: 12.9

Just getting worseI’ve loved tumblr for over a decade and they just keep adding worse and worse features. Tumblr live? I’ve never seen anything but scathing criticism over this feature and they roll it out in more countries? The app is extremely glitchy because of the new video ads (that play audio without your prompting!) and the apps actual video player only halfway functions! It glitches out, won’t play, won’t play the audio, won’t play the video, won’t allow scrolling through time stamps. It’s honestly a toss up, the glitches are random and rarely consistent. Tumblr needs to shape up and go back to its roots. The last year has just been bad change after bad change. If things don’t start back pedaling soon I will delete my account and find a new place to spend my time. Just today I had to scroll through 3(three) ads per single post! I know that this is a glitch but the fact that they have enough ads now that that glitch is even possible is insane!! I remember a time barely a year ago when tumblr ads were not whole screen videos, did not actively disrupt my experience, and did not make me just close the app in frustration. This is an app full of people who do not care for the normal functioning’s of the internet. How could you think that changing to conform to the likes of twitter would do anything other than shrink your userbase?.Version: 31.1

Rampant bots and explicit advertisingAs a support staff, those at Tumblr seem intent on brushing their reports under a rug with the hopes that no one will be the wiser. This app is run rampant by bots - bots that target every blog and follow accounts using automated porn or dating app-oriented blogs. Tumblr's response? To do nothing about the actual problem even after dozens of reports to them, downright refusing to acknowledge they have an account verification problem and that possibly half of their platform is held firmly by automated accounts that could easily be weeded out by having a CAPTCHA check when creating an account, and choosing to punish their user base instead. That's not even mentioning the inappropriate ads that run on your very own dashboard, which you cannot hide from your personal view or have any choice in dictating, as they do not attach to your cookies. Do not allow yourself or children on the app as you will be immediately targeted by bots and explicit advertising, and will receive not even a word of acknowledgement of this problem by those who take reports, as they choose to remain blissfully aware of their platforms shortcomings, and prefer to give the finger to their users instead..Version: 12.3

Policy change for the worseTumblr has proven time and again that it doesn’t care about its userbase. We’re still using the site and we won’t stop using the site any time soon because there’s no alternative. But that’s what we’d have to do to hopefully force tumblr to change anything. And they still won’t do it because their policy change isn’t about family values or what the userbase allegedly wants. It’s about money..Version: 12.4

Recent problemsNormally, I love tumblr, but I love the community, NOT the app. Tumblr live is obnoxious, and despite never using it I cant get rid of it, the new layout on desktop (off topic, I know, but they aint gonna listen otherwise) looks awful. Theres ads that can be a risk for epileptic folks that cant be turned off, and the ability to see a reblog by clicking/pressing on the blogger was removed. Fix the app and I, and many others, will change our reviews to 5 stars..Version: 31.2

Ads are taking overBeen using Tumblr for many years, both the app and the website, and in recent months it has become almost unusable. Between the changes to the default behaviour of your timeline, the unpublished limitations on video uploads that cause most of them to fail showing without telling you why, to the ballooning of sponsored “recommended” posts, it’s becoming more and more difficult to actually see the content you want. The latest update with the app has pushed things to ridiculous levels though. I counted, and of the first 15 posts when I open the app now EIGHT of them are ads!! That’s more than half of the posts!! I have to scroll through so much trash just to see the occasional post from someone I actually follow. It really seems like the site is reaching its end game. If they have to push so many ads just to try to keep things afloat then I can’t see it lasting much longer. They’ll drive away their user base, and with it whatever ad revenue they’re trying to cling to. That’s certainly the case for me..Version: 10.8.1

Really, guys?So not only do we have to deal with the ridiculously high number of ads of this site and app now, but you’re going to ban a bunch of random tags (girl? You’re banning us from tagging girl? Really?), but still going to allow Pornbots to be rampant despite users constantly reporting them? So basically you’re telling me that Apple is going to tell you that you have to be age appropriate and yall idiots decide that what they mean is you should arbitrarily ban the word armpit from being tagged. Firstly, Apple, maybe instead of cracking down on Tumblr again you should consider taking a hard look at Twitter which has a lower age rating for the app and absolutely allows NSFW content as well as allowing literal people attracted to children to spout their disgusting rhetoric. Secondly, the Tumblr staff need to take a long think about just why people are abandoning the platform. Constant censorship - particularly over STUPID things (I got a picture of my forearm tattoo flagged once, like really?) - is ridiculous and you’re guaranteed to begin losing money when people get sick of not even being allowed to tag their perfectly innocent posts properly. Fix this..Version: 22.5.1

Nice community, but app has flawsThere’s some really nice people on here, and it’s a really enjoyable place to be in since most people are accepting, but the app itself is not the best. It keeps crashing even though I have a strong connection and am on the latest version of the app. Random posts keep getting flagged and hidden. Tagging system doesn’t work very well (I can’t find some of the posts I tagged, which honestly makes the tagging system useless). Can’t recover accounts (rip teenagepotatoninja ver 1). Recommended posts never renew, leaving me with a bunch of posts I’ve already seen multiple times before. Lots of flaws and sadly, a good community can’t always make up for everything..Version: 15.4

You’re killing meThis update is appalling. Not only am I now getting a notification any time anyone posts on anything I liked, EVER, meaning I miss most of the notifications that I actually want!! But now nothing works: My masterlist won’t let me edit it to add new links. So I (not happily) took the time to create a new one and guess what?! I insert the hyperlink in my description and now when anyone clicks it on the app the stupid thing just keeps taking them to safari, then telling them to download the app from the App Store which they obviously already have, leading them into some sort of torturous catch22 circle that they will never make it out of alive. This is on top of all the other bugs on the site. Your developers need to come up with something fast because right now pretty much everyone I know on tumblr is ready to rap it. Coloured fonts are awesome but not if nothing else works 😤😤😤.Version: 11.7

Staff are extremely out of tune with usersStaff keep updating the app to force poorly-thought-out features on users while seemingly ignoring feedback telling them that users do not, in fact, like or want them. This includes a useless, scummy live-streaming service inundated with third-party content that does not meet Tumblr’s own guidelines. This “feature”, if you deign to call it that, used to have a toggle to snooze its appearance - not remove, just snooze - but they have now made that toggle non-functional. All this comes at the same time as content moderation regularly flags innocuous posts, particularly posts by LGBT people, as inappropriate. You cannot pride yourself on being an inclusive space while allowing your moderation systems to be abused to mark trans women merely existing as “adult content”. The state of this app is frankly embarrassing at the moment and one can only hope it improves before it collapses entirely..Version: 31.1

Hope you like adsHave you been looking for an app that shows you advertisement after advertisement? Well this is the app for you! You will be subjected to ads that companies pay for AND ads that tumblr users submit through the Blaze system. Want to listen to music while you scroll? That’s just too bad. Each ad you pass your music will be paused and an advertisement screen will replace the music player on your lock screen. Now you can listen to ads both in and outside of the app! Amazing! Ever wanted to participate in an ARG (alternate reality game)? With Tumblr, you will be forced to participate in any and every mimicry of an ARG a corporation can imagine! Just last week, Tumblr users were subjected to a heavy handed and incomprehensible attempt that was designed for Netflix’s new One Piece television show. This is not the blogging website that it promises to be. You will be a guinea pig for marketing experiments and your value as a user is based on the ease with which they can access your wallet..Version: 31.1

Once great, now it’s not even closeI’ve been on Tumblr for a very long time, so it pains me to have to rate it so low. However, I want to caution new users of what the app/website has become. Firstly, despite marketing themselves as the “gayest place on the internet”, Tumblr staff continuously bans openly lgbt+ accounts, and will even mark completely sfw selfies/personal images as nsfw. Whether this is deliberate by staff, or an error in their system, staff has done nothing to right these wrongs. Secondly, Tumblr is trying to turn itself into a Twitter/Tiktok copycat, despite the majority of the userbase disliking the changes. Tumblr has been an extremely unique platform since it’s start, and that drew in most of the current userbase, so I don’t understand why they want to change it so drastically. Thirdly, the new Tumblr Live is a major breach of privacy, to the point that (if I remember correctly) it’s not even allowed in the EU because of it sells massive amounts of data from those that use it. Also, once again, the complaints from the userbase about Tumblr Live have fallen on deaf ears, and, instead of allowing us to turn it off permanently, staff has now made it an integrated part of the website that cannot be turned off. Overall, this website used to be great, despite its issues, but now it’s become nearly unusable because of the changes Tumblr staff has made without consulting any of their userbase..Version: 31.1

Hypocritical garbage...Really...reallyyyy garbage.. the only thing tumblr was good for was NSFW artists but you took that away and continue to keep literal nazi content.Version: 15.9

The Purge Of 2018Welcome back, but come on, really? You delete people who make money off their art, people who post things for their own reasons, people who support others and yet you allow Nazis and White Supremacists and Pedophiles and people who should be in prison on your site. We get that Tumblr is owned by Yahoo and Yahoo is owned by Verizon but seriously, y’all want to make the app a better place? Get rid of them, then we’ll talk. Until then, well you’ll see..Version: 12.3

No Excuse for this AppFor one of the most popular social networking sites in the world, and after all this time, and given that most people access it through their phones, you'd think Tumblr would manage to put together a decent app. Alas, their army of nerds has failed. If you follow more than a few active users and only check your account a couple times a day, you have to scroll and scroll and scroll, waiting for each new page to load, to find the specific kind of content you're looking for (say, videos, images, etc.). If the app crashes, you have to spend another five minutes scrolling to get back to your place. It's 2017. How is this still such an issue? There should be some kind of comprehensive, accessible filter that lets you fine-tune your feed. And automatically brings you back to where you had last scrolled? There's not even a reliable workaround: the archive button doesn't exist or the user has to choose a separate app theme or something with that specific function? It's definitely not there by default. And the ads. They're so large. Again, it makes infinite scrolling a chore; a quarter of each scroll is ad space, meaning more pauses for loading and less easily accessible content. I'd happily by a reasonable subscription to disable the ads. Is programming really this impossible?.Version: 9.3

Great community. terrible site. The latest update has made the site not just harder to navigate regarding tags and blocked terms, but a lot unsafer for everyone using it. permanently blocking certain tags for everyone makes it harder for users to tag appropriately, and for others to filter tags and terms that may be harmful or undesirable. this means users will find lesser-known tags to post content under, resulting in that content showing up on the dashboards of people who want that kind of content blocked, because tumblr removed the well-known tags. banning words like mental illness, suicide prevention, transphobia, gynaecology, etc. takes away access to conversations about those things. it takes away education material and resources and support for people who need it. this is harmful, especially since talking about these things is still so taboo on other social media sites. tumblr (apple) decided they (supposedly) wanted a safer environment for everyone and then turned around and made the whole thing a lot unsafer for everyone involved. it’s absolutely ridiculous..Version: 22.5.1

Reduce the frequency of ads. PLSI like tumblr, there really isn’t any other social media like it. i obviously there are bad sides to it, but there’s a weird sense of... not community, but acknowledgement? idk. like, as a website we have inside jokes that other social medias don’t have, we all have some sort of past superwholock harry potter emo edgy phase in common. but for real. ads every five posts is a bit ridiculous. the majority of posts on my dash are textposts. short ones. so the frequency of ads is annoying. also the ads are so weird and i’m not gonna lie, some of them are funny but i had different variations of one ad that was something along the lines of ‘clear your bowels without a doctor’ and it was the most cursed disgusting pictures of bananas being cooked in the strangest way. [tw ed mention] also obviously the problematic communities. i manage to steer clear of them, mostly, but there was one uh pro-ana blog in my recommendations for no reason. like i follow cottagecore accounts and. not meme pages but whatever the tumblr equivalent is where you just post whatever’s in your head and it gets 80k notes. if i’d seen that a year ago . oh boy it wouldn’t have ended well. i get that it’s hard to moderate these things but when i open the app and see “mental wealth month” at the top whatever that even means. it feels very performative. at least make an effort..Version: 19.8

Most recent changes are badI don’t want other people’s posts on my feed. You din want something, I’ll go find it. Stop putting random posts on my feed..Version: 10.7

Deleted inbox messagesFor some reason, the other day or week (I can’t remember exactly when), all of my inbox messages got deleted from recent back to 2018. Not sure why, not even sure if people can send asks now or if they will be deleted too but would like them back somehow. This is not just on the mobile app, also on web..Version: 20.6

Getting worse instead of better!App freezes constantly and then crashes, especially when trying like a post or look at notifications. The design of the app has been getting progressively worse, and the notifications feed is not only ugly, but also completely useless. Also, despite turning off the 'best stuff first' feature, the app continues to show me 'since you've been gone' posts and other content from users I don't follow. I like Tumblr, but all these glitches and issues are incredibly frustrating and making me begin to wonder if I should even bother. Please fix this Tumblr..Version: 9.7

UuuuuuGGGHHHHHHThis app is terrible and I don’t really recommend it if you get easily frustrated by broken assets that you can’t even use even though they’re everywhere. An example of this is the search option on everyone’s blog. When I go to type something in on someone’s blog so I can search for a tag that they have, even if they have a lot of posts in that tag it’ll give me the “Oops nothing here in this tag! It just doesn’t exist!”. This has been an issue for YEARS. I have never been able to go in someone’s blog, manually type a tag and be able to click search to get me all the posts in that tag. This is also an issue for my personal blog. I haven’t been able to search a tag by manually typing it in. I have to put the tag on a post that is COMPLETELY unrelated to the tag just so I can get into it, and then I have to remove the tag from that post after just because I wanted to find it...... it’s a lot of extra work because of a bug that has gone unfixed for a long time. I can’t tell you how much time I’ve wasted having to scroll far down to a miscellaneous post so my followers don’t see a weird tag on an unrelated post, typing the tag on the post so I can click on it, and then deleting the tag from that post after I’ve gotten into the tag. Why is there a manual typing search option for specific blog tags when it doesn’t even work???.Version: 18.8

It gets worseI’ve been using this app for the better part of ten years. I can assure you, every single update (with the rarest exceptions) makes it even worse. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve felt a sense of dread when I notice another update ready to be downloaded. I loathed the change where the search tab was replaced with tumblr’s weird version of IG reels so you can’t search for anything easily without remembering to manually turn it back to search every week. (Yes, every week. There’s no option to permanently change it back.) With this most recent update — where they move the profile tab in lieu of the tumblr market — it makes this app nearly unusable for me. Gone are the days of being able to easily access your own blog, settings, etc. Instead, you get a whole section dedicated to a store that you have zero interest in and will never ever buy from. The profile button is now hidden on the dashboard. You click on it, you cannot save your scrolling on your dash. You cannot switch over to another tab without completely exiting out of your profile. If I ever use tumblr again, I’m only using the online site via my computer. I can’t stand the way the app works now and I know this is going to cause issues for so many other people. I doubt any of these problems get addressed either. In the past decade, staff has shown no interest in listening to what their user base is needing or asking for. Terrible updates always stick around. This time, I refuse to..Version: 28.1

Extremely frustrating new layoutListen, I love tumblr. I only joined about a year ago, but the environment on the app is so weird and welcoming and I use this app every day. But the last few update have been extremely frustrating. I get that you’re trying to optimize the app to be able to make a profit so that you can rely more on the community and less on ads, but you’ve now made both searching and looking at your own blogs completely unintuitive. While I don’t think the live function is useless, the fact that it took the place of the search bar at the bottom of my screen (a function I’m WAY more likely to actually use) made it feel like I was being tricked into clicking on a feature o never asked for. But that was the last update, this time, it got so much worse. My sacred corner of my screen where I could go to access my blogs has now been replaced by an internet storefront. It feels like blogs have been devalued in the face of selling features. Now that both the search bar and access to my own blogs has been moved to the top of the screen (the hardest part to reach on your average iPhone) it feels like the app only cares about you seeing your feed (so more ads) and selling itself to you. I hope you change it back..Version: 28.1

An Honest ReviewThat one star isn’t there for the reason you’re probably thinking. The app itself does leave much to be desired, and for some, it has become an app that holds the title of ’Most Downloaded App And Then Deleted Afterwards’. It’s community varies, sometimes pleasant and sometimes downright violent. On the same line, the app has a constant stream of content that is inciting and wonderfully diverse not due to the developers but more to the people who produce and consume the content directly from the app. It’s why it has that flip switch where some days you hate it and other days you love it. However, it is due to this sporadic behaviour from the staff and from their odd focuses on details that limit the extent of this app’s functionality. The app’s community has allowed a brilliant mindspace for all kinds of creators and producers. Its value is diminished by the capabilities of its current holders. I ask that for the sake of those creators, producers and consumers that action is taken accordingly following the input of the multiple complaints that I know have made their way to you and adapt appropriately to the app’s existing structure to further your success. As for others reviewing this app as a consumer, I do advise you to look into this app, not because of its design but because of the wondrous expanse of content that you can find that matches your interests. You will find without a doubt that you are most certainly not alone within this app’s community..Version: 13.3

Completely uselessIf you open a tumblr page on a mobile web browser, they have the nerve to recommend the app because it’s “better”. It’s not better. The text editor is unintuitive and missing a lot of features, it’s unnecessarily difficult to find and manage drafts, and they only allow extremely basic formatting. They have been removing anything and everything that makes this app usable. It’s a waste of space to have this on your phone..Version: 12.9

Constant HiccupsI spend the majority of my time on social media on Tumblr by a long shot, but the app is just barely useful. New issues pop up rather frequently, the newest of which being that I continuously get notifications for one of my blogs even when logged into another account, I've logged out and in to both numerous times to try and fix the issue but it hasn't worked. I never use the Tumblr app to actually make posts, it's near impossible to format if you like using html in your posts, small image sizes always get messed up and enlarged without fail, saved tags barely ever appear... It's just a big mess. I use the Tumblr app for checking notifications and that's it..Version: 12.5

Please fix tumblrBlanket nsfw ban really isn’t helping anyone, please stop.Version: 12.5

Obscene sponsored postsAgainst my will, Tumblr just served me an obscene ad for penis enlargement. It had pictures of penises on it. When they banned pictures with skin tones, it was to make room for ads like this, I suppose. Tumblr’s bad..Version: 12.4

Tumblr LiveTumblr Live is an abomination of a “feature”, and is a slap in the face to a userbase that largely values anonymity. Run by a third party that primarily deals with dating apps and camgirl sites, and rife with security issues. Sure you can “snooze” it every 7 days, but before you know it this thing will be back on your dash REPLACING the search button, and pushing pornbots to the top of your dash. Do better Tumblr..Version: 30.6.1

I like it, but some things need fixingFirst of all, moving the profile tab to the top right of the dashboard and replacing it with TumblrMart is the most frustrating change and that NEEDS to be reversed. Secondly, you really need to do something about the bots. Half the time I spend on Tumblr seems to be spent reporting and blocking all these boys that keep following me. It’s so annoying. Now one other, less complain-y thing just for fun: there’s theme settings but not very many themes to choose from. More themes would be great, or even better would be custom themes..Version: 28.1

New updates are painful."Tumblr live" is something nobody wants. If we wanted to use Tik Tok then we would use Tik Tok. The fact that we have to snooze it every few days shows that you already knew we'd hate it enough to want to get rid of it, so why did you add it in the first place? The new trending page is horrible too. People go to the trending page to see the actual trends at first glance. Not "today" and "staff picks." If you're going to add those pages you should still have the trending page open first when clicking over. I don't get the point of the "today" page, it's needlessly cluttered. And now Tumblrmart? Are you seriously covering up where OUR personal blog pages should be with a merchandise mart. I can tell you right now that NOBODY is going to look at that and say "What a good update, tumblr!" If you want money from your users then make better choices because nobody is going to pay for using this website when you've been destroying the entire layout. The people who've been using for tumblr for years are the people you want to appease, not this imaginary audience you've made up. Keep making this website unusable and people are going to leave - not purchase your merch. Why is it so hard to focus on the issues people have been begging for you to look at for years instead of adding things nobody wanted?.Version: 28.2

Gets worse with every updateDon’t get me wrong, I like tumblr. I have been on this site since 2011 or 2012. I like the art community and the chronological dash and being able to show or hide my likes and following lists. Your experience is fully what/who you follow and what you search. That said, the tagging system that used to make the site so good has been screwed over yet again in the most recent update. Tumblr has added more banned words and suppressed more content supposedly in the name of following Apple’s guidelines. This ruins the search function and will prevent people from tagging things appropriately and will defeat the entire purpose of tagging and personal filters. They want to hide “unsafe” or “explicit” content and yet everything they do with the tags does the exact opposite. Why would anyone use the correct tags if it will immediately be suppressed? Also the old system of giving a warning on explicit blogs worked fine. Now on iOS you don’t even get the choice of continuing with that search or not. You get booted back to the search function. I don’t know the exact age demographics of tumblr but especially these days it seems to be a site for adults who grew up with it so the fact that they treat their user base like children needing to be censored is frustrating and useless. If they keep going down this path of censorship and incompetent search functions I might be forced to abandon it all together rather than continue trying to make it work..Version: 22.5.1

Tumblr content is good, features are badFor a while, tumblr has been trying to get engagement from people on tiktok with a feature called tumblr live. It is incredibly unpopular since the button to make it not appear in your main 5 buttons on your dashboard has been something you have to snooze every week. Most users disliked this but dealt with it. Most recently, that snooze button no longer gets rid of this icon, but the pop up on the top of the dashboard is no longer there with this feature. I just don’t want to see it at all, on the older version I have, it takes the spot of the search feature, which means I HAVE to search on desktop. Incredibly inconvenient and the announcement of this feature has been loudly criticized. Other features, like polls, are good and free for everyone, unlike twitter (and it isn’t run by a drugged out fascist apologist). I haven’t heard anything about api changes, so things like xkit rewritten still help in the features that tumblr doesn’t have the budget to implement. They could have been the one mario party meme where luigi wins by doing nothing, but they had to make poor layout choices and add features few are interested in. I won’t be supporting add free until changes are made for user comfort. They can make things better, but recently they’ve made it worse. It really needs a lot of work in order for the site to be the internet home most of us would like it to be again..Version: 27.4

Aaand back to barely usableI use this app because the mobile website is non-functional and there don't appear to be any third-party options. It's not unusable, but there are a lot of odd and downright bad UX decisions made on a regular basis, and it's crystal clear that no user testing is done before updates. Most recent update can no longer reblog chat posts, crashes every five minutes, often refuses to update notifications and gets stuck, and takes you through three different screens to reblog something. Quotes are also ridiculously big, making most of them unreadable. There's also no feedback / bug report option within the app, meaning that any reports about broken functionality get the staff asking you if you've turned it off and on again. Thus the review. Other than all this, it's great. The messaging system works, my dash is accessible, the cute little button cloud when you go to post is appropriately cute, cuts now appear to work on iPhone, and the queue updates with a bit of prompting. It could be a lot worse..Version: 9.2.1

A MessDon’t get me wrong, I love tumblr, but the app is held together by glitter glue and toothpicks. I’ve never experienced an app that crashes so much. I thought that every update it would get better but it just gets worse. It won’t load anything, pictures don’t show up, links to other posts say “post not found” even though they work when I’m on my laptop. HOW DOES IT GET WORSE EACH UPDATE!!!!!????.Version: 11.4

Reverse the nsfw banYou guy are sexists and incompetent. You were the one of the few good platforms that didn’t treat the female body as inherently sexual. Now you’ve accepted the normal sexists behaviour of everyone else. STOP DELETING BAD REVIEWS.Version: 12.6

Very annoying! Please, FIX it already. My profile and background pictures ARE CONSTANTLY being DELETED! Every, single time I update the picture, or refresh my page it will automatically delete and then reset itself back to default backgrounds / headers and pictures. It’s been over 2 years, and I’ve reported the same issues countless of times. It’s absolutely ridiculous. Before you attempt to give me options on how else to solve this reoccurrence, I’ve ALREADY tried the following. — uninstalled and reinstalled. — logged in and logged out. — refreshed the app. — used this app on multiple devices. — software is ALWAYS up to date..Version: 15.0

Extremely upset with the proposed + recently implemented changesI’ve been on tumblr for years, and it’s the only social media where i actually enjoy creating my own posts and engaging with others rather than just lurking + endlessly scrolling. there’s a reason why i hate twitter (which i haven’t used in 2+ years and i’ve never looked back) and enjoy tumblr for its unique UI, quality media sharing, flexible personalization of blogs, lack of invasive algorithms, etc. so with all of the recently implemented updates and proposed upcoming features that aim to turn tumblr into the same tiktok/twitter/instagram/etc amalgamation that EVERY other social media is becoming, im extremely displeased. nobody wants tumblr live. nobody wants to see “liked by your mutuals!” (there’s a reason why everyone disables the public likes tab on their blogs). nobody wants to see notes split up by interaction type. nobody wants a video player that’s harder to use, or a photo viewer that is less accessible. if you really want to get your site out of debt, stop making changes to strip tumblr of its strengths and uniqueness just to become twitter 2.0. nobody wants it, and you’ll lose a hearty chunk of your userbase very soon unless you work to reverse these changes and start fixing the site’s ACTUAL problems. starting with, i don’t know, making the search function usable after years of it being borderline useless?.Version: 30.4

More and more downhillUsed to be a big fan of this hellsite, been on it for 13 years, its becoming more and more worse each day with every update staff add. It used to be unique and cool but now its a twitter clone with an even worse search/tag system. This used to be a safe space for queer people but each day I find out more and more trans peoples accounts being taken down for no reason at all. The staff are notable transphobes and TERFS, and I cant stand being on this site anymore despite all the love and memories I had for it before. Get it together tumblr, actually listen to feedback from your users, stop shoving an ad in my face every five seconds, acknowledge your mistakes and fix this site. Also the app is falling apart, constant refreshing of the timeline unprompted or scrolling up and down randomly so I cant find where I was previously. Boderline unusuable.Version: 31.9

New unrelated posts in your home feed! 😡The recent update causing recommendations to take up a whole post is the worst change they could ever make. Recently I am having to deleting all on unrelated posts one by one just to get to the bloggers that I go on the app in the first place. This is causing me to waste data and pointlessly used battery life on my phone. Change it back Tumblr. I liked it better when it was a small recommendations sliding bar. Because let’s be honest half the time your recommendations are way off from the content that I am looking for. Change it back before I get too frustrated and stop using your service altogether. You need viewership to get ad revenue after all..Version: 10.8.1

Changing the entire site to accommodate Twitter users that aren’t comingHonestly after all these years I was truly taken by surprise when Tumblr decided to chance everything for around 4 thousand people. Screw the hundreds of thousands of people that have been here for years. And as we’ve loudly protested and complained the Tumblr staff has had one thing to say to us. "This is what you asked for - this is what you want." Sorry but it most definitely is not. I don’t know who said that but they are a definite minority, assuming they exist. Way to destroy culture. And to say we’ve been given every opportunity to put in our thoughts? When reblogs are disabled? The very thing designed to spread and share information in this god forsaken (not affectionate) site? Last I checked only 300 people had even seen them. It’s a cop-out. This app/site/company is destroying itself just like the first time, except unlike the first time, it’s not some group who have no idea what they are doing. It’s the group that’s possessed tumblr for so long that they actually are tumblr now, not just site ruining imposters. Well we thought they weren’t sure ruining. Guess there’s no learning in the pursuit of money. Anyways I’m leaving and I’m not coming back because I don’t like it when a potential few people (cough, dollar bills, cough) are put before decades of culture and love..Version: 31.0

What the hell are these changesI have been using tumblr on and off for about 7 years, and i’ve enjoyed a lot of it. tumblr is a unique social media platform that really helps foster community and friendships. but the changes that have been happening recently/are being planned are ruining this site. the most important of these changes being collapsable reblog chains. by changing this feature tumblr will be getting rid of what makes it tumblr. they will fundamentally change the site and the way it has been and is being used, which completely negates the point of it existing. if i wanted this feature, i would go to twitter. conversation will be discouraged and communities will be shattered, and tumblr will cease to be the tumblr we all know and love. its changes like these and the addition of tumblr live being forced upon the community that are really discouraging me from using tumblr. the devs arent listening to the userbase, and are only alienating us further with every new change they’re currently adding. this isnt to say we dont want changes. there are many features that are sorely lacking and neglected. the video player is buggy and the volume on sound and video content is difficult to control and customise, to name one. tumblr needs to start listening to its userbase, otherwise they’re going to find themselves without a userbase at all..Version: 30.3

Constantly malfunctioningBasic features of the app do not work, like the search function on your own blog, and it's impossible to hunt for specific tags on the general tag search without a bunch of random content also filtering in. Ads keep glitching out my dashboard. Ads for awful products clutter up everything. You can't go back onto previous person's reblog anymore. Constant updates that make your experience worse..Version: 30.3

Getting worse and worse every dayI can tell tumblr wants so desperate to capitalise on the fall of twitter by trying to change the entire format of the app and site to hopefully bring in new users. I've never had a problem with tumblr making changes and updates in the past, but in this year alone, they've managed to make everything uniquely convoluted, and riddled with unflattering useless features and merch plugs. Its like this pathetically desperate scramble to make money any way possible and failing at every turn. These decisions have been worse than twitters and i dont mean that lightly. Its even more frustrating because theyre making all these unnecessary changes while still refusing to add login authentication to stave off some of the relentless bots that infest the site..Version: 30.3

Ruined by updatesStaff seem insistent on ruining both the app and the website. Pushing tumblr live (despite it not only being wholly unused, but loudly hated by the majority of users), removing basic functionality, and refusing to monitor & remove bots, as well as horrific and illegal content, while instead policing harmless content, family friendly content based on the whims and biases of individual employees. If they actually listened to their user base instead of wasting time and money implementing things that people not only didn’t ask for, but were in fact begging them not to do, tumblr could be great. It has the potential to be one of the last few unique and interesting social media sites, but instead it’s being rendered unusable in the stupidest ways imaginable. It’s like having a boat that’s perfectly fine, if a little rusty, and all the passengers are suggesting that maybe if the crew patched the sails and polished things up a bit that they might actually get somewhere, but instead they’re bashing holes in the sides, steering into a storm, and then getting confused about why the boat is sinking..Version: 31.1

IOS’ censorship damages an otherwise great appI’m an adult, who uses my credit card to pay for an ad-free subscription. Having deselected every option to ‘hide potentially nsfw content’ there is no reason I should ever see a post censored with “iOS has decided to hide this potentially nsfw content” (like that isn’t the reason I’m on this app on the first place), and even less reason to GIVE ME NO OPTION TO VIEW IT. As a longtime user (10ish years at this point), I really hope that staff doesn’t decide to force a worse content algorithm on the user base trying to chase impossible profit margins. I use tumblr because it hasn’t turned into the site formerly known as twitter yet, and the more features they copy from other social media sites, the closer I get to quitting them just like reddit and facebook and twitter. If Apple’s idiotic policies force you to arbitrarily censor content, at least give your adult users a way to view the post in browser, instead of just removing the content I pay for from my user experience. Otherwise, there’s no point in continuing to pay for a subscription that deliberately hides the content I’m looking for. (I’m not even going to start with how censoring tags made the search function go from ’mostly useless’ to ‘completely worthless’. :\ I love this site, and I’d like to see it succeed, but that will never happen while they’re focused on chasing a new trendy theoretical user base over listening to the core users who pay to support the site..Version: 31.1

Can't use anymoreIt kept crashing so I deleted it so I could download it again to reset it. Got a message that the app is incompatible with my iPad. Can't download previous versions of app. Boo..Version: 12.5

It was so good...I've been on tumblr since 2009 and seen a lot in the way it's changed! It was such a good platform and be made many a good friend but recently it's changed. The new user agreement goes against free speech! They now censor all NSFW content, even body positive and high end art work. How is this a fair process! Its not being done for the user but to appease Apple and it's rules for apps, while also to make the platform more tempting to advertiser's! How is it all other social platforms invest in correct filtering measures to prevent the illegal content, yet allow those of legal age to enjoy a community they are part of. That's what Tumblr should be focusing on, not pushing away and neglecting a community that made it to what it is! The recent update has ruined what made Tumblr amazing, it's place as a freedom of speech platform and is now clearly being run into the ground. I'd stay clear as I don't expect Tumblr to be around this time next year 🤷🏼‍♂️.Version: 12.3

MessyY’all honestly truly biffed it on this one. Ever since December 17, the content has gone down due to basically censorship of more than just nudity. Because of the new system that has been put into place, it has mistaken both many blogs and posts to be deemed ‘inappropriate’ in which they are not and it is frustrating to see something that was so popular and well respected to being a joke and I honestly don’t think y’all can recover from that..Version: 12.3.1

Clunky and frustratingly slow.I’ve been using tumblr for seven years- they should change the name to tumble because its app has been tumbling downhill since its launch. The app is clunky and frustratingly slow. It constantly crashes and cannot keep up with notifications and messages. Written posts do not post onto the blog no matter how many times one hits the ‘post’ button. I have been patiently awaiting improvement in the app since it launched- I held off writing a negative review in hopes of a turnaround but to be frank, the app is a shambles. Tumblr was a brilliant platform and a great outlet for many, however I for one can no longer utilise it in the same way due to the technical shortcomings of the app. It would have been brilliant if the app could’ve reflected the website but despite the technical leaps the world has made, tumblr is lagging far behind other social media apps. It’s a great shame but I will be uninstalling the app permanently- at least I’ll avoid possibly damaging my phone by throwing at a wall in moment of lag frustration..Version: 11.3.1

Something needs to be done about the cyberbullyingI used this website a few years back and was bullied horribly by lots of people on it. It was to the point I would have to block people on a regular daily basis. I had at least over 200 people say horrible things to me using swear words and writing to me in all capitals, sending me threats and calling me names as well. It got so out of hand that I ended up hurting myself physically and almost took my own life. I have terrible trauma because of this website but came back to it a year later simply because another fandom caught my attention. Sadly this fandom turned toxic too and I had more people bully me after I had only just recovered. Friends of mine had to experience similar problems as well. We need strict rules and policies. There are far too many bullies using this site and it’s dangerous and should be taken much more seriously..Version: 28.3

:(This app is... frustrating on a good day. When everything seems to be functioning properly, it’s fine but that so rarely happens anymore. So many things go wrong on any given day, it’s hard to keep track. Right now, asks seem to be busted for me and several others. We’ve gone through batches of “test asks” to see if they’re sending and receiving properly, after noticing a lack in our normal ask activity. I’ve also noticed a lot of trouble with posts disappearing after hitting send, not postings at all, connection issues, replies not showing up, and more. Most of this was noticed prior to the update but have shown no improvement after updating. I’ve had numerous issues with the app, especially after the December 2018 update. Please please please take your user base into account in a more interactive and comprehensive way. I’m sure you’re doing your best, but I think it’s time to re-evaluate your tactics. I’ve seen nothing but complaints about user interface for years now (to the point where it’s become a sarcastic joke) and a huge lack of addressing those issues from staff. I can’t see myself not using the app for good, just bc it’s where so much of my own following and work is. But I do frequent it less and less, due to these issues. So only two stars for now. Hoping to bump it up in the future..Version: 13.2

Awful changes GET RID OF TUMBLR LIVEGET RID OF TUMBLR LIVE Removing chronological feed. Removing customization options. Search function still awful. Videos have awkward zoom ins when watched, and no pause button. It's actively trying to remove the features that make the app fun in favour of trying to be a far buggier tiktok or something. If I wanted tiktok or twitter I'd use those apps..Version: 30.6.1

App gets worse every dayIdk man…. ive been a tumblr user since 2014. i really enjoyed this app when it worked. but it is hanging on by a thread. this app is basically unusable now. after the app is open for a few minutes, my phone will start to overheat. i dont even have to scroll or use it, just having the app open turns my phone into a furnace. the dash board jumps and skips around randomly as the ads load in and out. dash is very laggy as i scroll, not even deep in the dashboard. the longer you scroll the longer things take to load. this was always a “feature” of tumblr mobil, but it’s gotten a lot worse. videos dont play easily. you have to scroll so the video is closer to the top or bottom, and even then its finicky. the volume icon on videos doesnt always react when tapped. tapping on the video itself enters full screen mode, but that always pauses the video and its hard to get it to play. if you do manage it, the video will pause itself every few seconds. cant listen to music on your phone while use the app- the ads override the audio and make your music pause and play and then pause etc. bots are still there. except they have the trashiest, most plastic porn on their front pages for all to see, including minors i assume. could be a plus depending on what you like lol. but its mainly strange and offputting AND MORE! 😀 idk what is going on at tumblr headquarters..Version: 30.2

Has gone downhillThis app keeps getting worse and worse. Ads You can’t post what you want anymore, it’s a glorified Facebook posing as a blog..Version: 13.4

Freezes and crashes all the timeI'm here reinstalling the app for the fifth time. It freezes is such a way that closing the app doesn't fix it, restarting my phone doesn't fix it, only reinstalling the entire app fixes it. And still it crashes and takes up all my storage. Everyone is already leaving tumblr so it's just a matter of time I suppose.Version: 9.9

Frustrating changes, won’t accept feedbackUpdated review: The search function is next to non existent, it barely functions and is infuriating. The app and website keeps making unnecessary changes that make things worse and more annoying to use. You used to be able to click on someone’s post and see the post on their blog now and if you clicked the person they rebooted it from, you would see it on them blog, now you are taken directly to their blog instead of the individual post page. The UI changes are also awful and making things worse for the sake of being like every other app, to make things ‘easier’ for newer users, even though those newer users are joining tumblr to get away from those design features from other apps. The app had decided to become yet another ‘TikTok’ lite with a ‘for you’ page, short video reels, live feature you can’t turn off(in some countries) and an annoying image viewer that forces you to scroll to the next image and is overly distracting with the way it displays things. Tumblr staff refuse to listen to criticism and dismiss it because these new changes are apparently better, but they are not. Very very disappointed..Version: 30.0

Following in Instagrams steps..I’m sad to say this but Tumblr is finally becoming just like all other social media media sites/apps. I have been using Tumblr for over a decade and the reason I have stayed with Tumblr is because there hasn’t been any massive changes with their interface and they way the app and site looks. I’m sure most people will agree with me when I say apps changes their navigation is usually seen as negative by users because most of us are happy with how they are and we don’t want changes. I see though now on the tumblr app there is a “marketplace” tab. I guess Tumblr was going to follow the path path as Instagram and Facebook, eventually. What a shame. If the developers are reading this, most of us DONT want this garbage on the app. It’s an annoyance and waste of space on our screen. We don’t want a market place. We come on here to write, vent, share other fandoms, not buy. This is supppsed to be a blog, not a shop. Please do not destroy your reputation any further, the same way many other apps have..Version: 28.3

Banned TagsI’ll put my review up to five stars if the recent banned tags is reversed. it makes the site practically unusable and unsafe for everyone involved because people will use multiple ways to get around the ban and that will make it extremely difficult to filter those posts out. this isn’t just from a nsfw content perspective - I actively try to avoid nsfw content but this still effects me greatly. they banned things like “my post”, “my art”, etc. as well as any way to effectively tag posts with warnings - such as “blood”. this makes an incredibly hostile environment for artists and people who enjoy art. either a majority of the user base will leave or they’ll find work arounds. this is a stupid update that just harms everyone including the app itself. please reconsider..Version: 22.5.1

Cant view my own blogLove this app but i cant even view my own blog anymore because it “may contain sensitive content” i worked very hard on it and idc if others can see it but i should be able to especially if i’m 18+ :/.Version: 12.4

Not good anymore.Tumblr was so awesome before. Even when the app had problems it was at least fun. But now that they censor everything it sucks..Version: 13.4

They Just Don’t Listen…I’ve been using tumblr on mobile for years and years and it used to consistently be one of my favourite social media sites as it’s a great platform for writing and the only site where I’ve actively made friends Key word being used to, cuz they keep updating the website and app in ways that users very openly do not like, trying to make it more similar to Twitter and Tiktok in order to make more money, as well as generally ignoring user feedback (I.e. the open hatred for tumblr live amongst users vs staff still pushing it) Overall, used to be pretty fun and a cool site but it’s slowly but surely being destroyed with anything that made it unique being taken away etc. in order to make it more marketable and profitable. Unless they strike a middle ground between making sure the site is still making money and keeping the core users happy, I’d say give it a miss.Version: 31.1

Goodbye TumblrYou know what-- I couldn't be more disappointed. Tumblr has steadily been a sinking ship slowly getting worse and worse overtime and yet I stubbornly clung on. Through the nsfw ban, the blog purge, the broken changes to our dashboards and attempted targeted advertising, the issues with predators using the platform and the bots-- but I stuck it out but-- When your account can be without warning just terminated and you can't even sign back up without it being instantly deleted when as far as you are aware you have done nothing justifying deletion of your blog. I have long since stopped enjoying tumblr-- but this is it. At the least you're supposed to get a message right? A warning and cease and desist with whatever "wrong" content you're posting before just gone right? But hey-- guess it's all on the support and staff now whether my blog comes back, fully restored-- but as it is. Termination of an account without warning along with all the false nsfw flags on images such as photos of cats or drawings of pokémon has me saying goodbye. -tammyhybrid21.Version: 14.1

UghTumblr itself is awesome but this app constantly crashes and refuses to open and you have to delete and redownload to get anywhere.Version: 9.2.1

UncomfortableYou know what, Tumblr is apart of my life. But am feeling uncomfortable with it after the new update from you guys. Tumblr was a freedom social app that people can post or repost anything they want (including 18+ especially). The majority of people who are using it also feelings like mine. 18+ posts aren’t bad at all, just for some persons who unable to see pros side of that. In conclusion, I was and am still respecting Tumblr as usual, but return the freedom for users..Version: 12.4

THE ENDYou have kill my love for tumblr by Dictating what we can and can not do on your site. I really hope your company falls part and crashes to the ground !! There are newer better apps out there now, tumblr will be old news soon !.Version: 12.7

This app is not as good as it used to beLast time I was on this app was back when I had an iPod touch and it’s definitely not the same. Reposting is a pain. Like that you change the theme on the phone tho, but it’s slow. Would recommend using the laptop..Version: 15.8

Love tumblr, but things need to changeThe app runs terribly. It constantly closes out of itself, is slow, and it heats up my phone to degrees that are higher than the hottest thing in the known universe. The app doesn’t allow for certain, very important, features that the desktop version contains (an example being: blocking blogs from side blogs, as the app only allows users to block through their main blog. This doesn’t stop blogs you’ve blocked on your main from viewing and interacting with your side blogs). New features are constantly being pushed out as well, and while I do appreciate the innovative approach, these features are not wanted or enjoyed by the user base. Most “new features” appear clunky and as if they didn’t do proper testing. The staff doesn’t seem to listen to the user base’s wants on the app, or the desktop version either. On top of that, the staff runs the app, and the desktop site itself, horribly as well. Blogs are terminated via user reports that are not reviewed by staff, the staff doesn’t take harassment seriously, and they list sfw queer topics as “mature” (while tumblr prides itself on its queer rep and acceptance). Overall, I love the community of tumblr and I don’t think there isn’t anything like tumblr that’s out there. However, I have not appreciated the approach that the app, and the desktop version, have been taking..Version: 31.1

Barely FunctioningI never really get that frustrated at buggy apps let alone left a review over it, but this is getting crazy for such a large company. The app is falling apart around you as you use it; the notifications don’t refresh and the loading icon just stays spinning, the menu text is jumping about the place, images refuse to load unless you turn your WiFi on and off and wait a few minutes, the wrong icons are displayed beside blogs, posts sometimes just vanish when you make them, app message number notifications switch between being stuck even if you read the message or don’t display at all, messages often send twice in a row or not at all, videos just don’t play half the time, or sometimes an image just blows up over the entire screen and freezes like that, and that’s all along with the app just freezing or crashing constantly I realised how bad it’s got when I had gotten used to closing down the app and opening it again and turning the WiFi on and off as I use it constantly just to get it to somewhat function.Version: 9.7

They’re determined to become twitter 2I love Tumblr. Emphasis on /Tumblr/. I really do not want to be using a twitter clone. You have a great thing here. It’s intuitive and and unique. I hate how it is trying to distance itself from blog style posting, and every change it has tried to make in the past few months have been stupid and bad. We don’t want collapsed reblog chains, that’s not how tumblr works. We want to be able to see the original post, not the posters blog. We want the bigots gone (though, this is hard). And personally, most of all I want the site to stop targeting queer people as unsafe. Stop censoring us, o gracious “queerest site on the internet” or whatever you called yourself. Still, I love Tumblr. When it inevitable crashes and burns as a weak imitation of twt, I guess I’m moving to neocities..Version: 30.7

AWFUL!!!!!!!I grew up with this website, and found it quite enjoyable up until recently, when I was forced to begin searching for alternatives. The website seems determine to rid itself of everything that makes it unique and worth viewing. For example, one much beloved element of the site, the ability to click on a reblogged post and then click on a previous version, reblogged by another user, was a key social component. Users would share detailed anecdotes, additional information, recommendations and even engage in conversation using this mechanism. Now, it’s gone, and unless there’s hope of it being restored, I’ll soon be gone from the platform. Furthermore, the total inability to permanently opt-out of Tumblr Live, which is widely hated and mocked on the platform, leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If that weren’t bad enough, the website constantly adds new features absolutely NO ONE wants or approves of, while doing nothing about the things long time users have wanted solutions for. For example: the search function on most blogs is effectively useless. All in all, the recent changes have made Tumblr a horribly unpleasant and frustrating experience, not simply as bland as any other social media platform, but totally dysfunctional. I will be actively be looking for a replacement. I have no interest on remaining on a site so hostile to its long-time users..Version: 30.3

I’ve been on this site for 10 years and all i got was this crappy 1-star reviewEver since the premier of the collectively-loathed ‘tumblr live’ feature, the tumblr app (which has historically been fairly unobtrusive as far as battery usage goes, i’ve been using it for several years across several phones and never had these issues) now causes my phone to overheat and drains battery to an insane degree whenever i use it, even if my phone is plugged in and on wifi. nothing else i’ve ever played or ran on my phone drains even a FRACTION of the battery that browsing tumblr does - i’d genuinely be better off playing pokémon go at full brightness for eight hours a day. there’s no way to actually ‘disable’ tumblr live, only the option to ‘snooze’ it for seven days, and even that doesn’t seem to actually stop the livestreams from being loaded in the background anyway as the performance issues stick around even when live is snoozed. the userbase has collectively been asking for the option to turn it off for good ever since it was added, but to no avail. it seems that pushing tacky, resource-hogging features that could maaaaybe bring them some more money is more important to tumblr staff than actually listening to the feedback they’re given by the userbase. i just want to be able to scroll for more than a few minutes without my phone getting so hot i can feel it through my rubber phone case 😬😬.Version: 31.1

Let people be themselvesYou should bring back the nsfw posts it’s not fair to people who want to express themselves.Version: 12.5

It’s a Yikes from mePretty much inhospitable for most artists/creators. Don’t even bother lmao.Version: 12.3

Censorship to the extremeCensoring female skin and discriminating against a large portion of its user base all in the name of making a little extra ad money. Yet the porn bots, spam bots, and nazis are all still able to post in full swing. “Breast” is a blocked tag but “white supremacy “ is not (and has ads on it?!?).Version: 12.3.1

Use the browser insteadThe only reason this isn’t a one star review is because it’s nicer looking than the browser version. That’s the only reason. This app consistently lags, stutters, freezes and glitches. Sometimes buttons don’t work, videos are always EXTREMELY slow to load, up to 10 minutes for a 2 minute long video. The same video loads almost instantly on the browser version. Also under your profile > likes don’t expect to be able to scroll more than twenty posts down before your phone freezes and the app has to be restarted..Version: 10.9

BAD UPDATEWHY DID YOU DO THAT Seriously WHAT make u think replacing my button to go to my profile with a SHOP ( THAT I CANT EVEN USE I DONT HAVE A CREDIT CARD ) and putting the profile button as a POP UP that i cant even go between my profile and notifications tabs because theres no tabs because its a pop up I can not put in words how much I hate this. Instagram changed their tabs to have a shop and reels instead of notifications and new post and I stopped using it mostly because i never got use to it so please dont say ill just get use to it cause I wont. I dont use reddit on my phone completely because my profile is up on the top right as a pop up instead of in the tabs and i hate it. and I hate this tumblr was one of the only apps that still had a good tabs navigation thing and youve ruined it.Version: 28.1

New update has raised a lot of concern for usersHi, I’ve been using tumblr for quite a few years now and slowly over time the app has become worse with the spam of ads and the silencing of nsfw creator’s, tumblr is known for being edgy and having art and im thankful for past updates which got rid of most of the gross stuff on there but now with this new update you can’t even interact with mutuals who post “sensitive content” or even turn on a switch that allows you to do so, I understand the update is to stay on the apple store but even then twitter has a nsfw side to it and it’s still here so I just don’t get it? This has affected a lot of people on tumblr cause now people can’t even see their own mutuals pages anymore. Please fix this because it’s raising a lot of talk on the app thankyou..Version: 22.5.1

Photos and AsksOkay so I like tumblr, but being an artist that draws on the iPad it’s seriously frustrating that every time I answer an ask I have to take a photo of it and THEN add it to a separate post with the drawings instead of just simply being able to answer the ask and then instantly place in my artwork. Tumblr is a decent app but this one thing both seriously bothers me and not to mention the only real way you can get anywhere on tumblr is if someone famous reblogs one of your posts and even then most people won’t actually check out the rest of your account. Tumblr is amazing and I love the whole ask idea but it’s becoming impossible to bare with the app version, I don’t want to keep putting my art on the computer either because it lowers the quality of it. Honestly if you’re just there to post random stuff and move on with your life then this app is for you but if you want to be here for a long time and gain a following? Not so much..Version: 10.5.1

Crashed in big timeI have being using tumblr for over a year now and it crashes me in big time. As I clean up on blogs that I follow the number stays on 514 but nothing to click on follow or unfollow and dashboard did not move at all as I tab for the update. Both web and app absolutely failed to move at all. Social media site like tumblr needs to be significantly improved on the platform. I am working very hard on my leisure to develop tumblr society for the world. The system video, photo, and multiple formats are very restrictive. We need tumblr to admit that most of there users are not children in fact very small percentage and so the platform needs to be a whole lot more adult friendly and at the same time more true society interactive social friendly. It is being existing for ten years already right? Please completely redesign and turn your app to be minimum 18 years or older and preferably 21 years and older. It doesn’t make any sense to do what Twitter or Facebook can already do and in other format alright. Seriously, can your team member truly just listen and truly make that difference? Most of your tumblr user don’t mind of paying for subscription, however, all of us care about all the inconvenience. This cannot wait, please make the major redesign and changes at once and not waiting at all. Your teams technology is too outdated, it needs completely overhaul and be five thousand times better and I mean it..Version: 9.6

Have been a user for almost 10 years, but..I have been a loyal user for almost 10 years and yet recently the site has felt less and less welcoming. I understand changes must happen for a site to thrive, and some (like being able to read notes from activity, or polls, were good!). The dash changes though? Horrible. It is clear both from appearance and a Labs post that they are modelling it on Twitter. This is a huge misstep as it is taking away the unique charm that characterised Tumblr for years. Plus, with the recent changes, it is said they listen to feedback, but there is no evidence of this. Any forms are met with generic replies that we must “just get used to change” despite overwhelming dislike from the userbase as a whole. Now with the recent avatar changes, though experimental, it has just confirmed that going forward Tumblr is no longer the place it once was, and staff don’t care if they drive loyal users away..Version: 30.9

:/Why would you have the option to snooze tumblr live for only SEVEN DAYS are you joking. Let us turn it completely off.Version: 30.6.1

UpsetBring back adult content.Version: 12.4

Broken- The send button glitches out, I'd switch to the browser version of your site but you can't scroll up on chat boxes so it's equally useless to try and communicate with people on there too. - Why can't I attach images to inbox message replies? - I wrote out a huge text post the other day and then accidentally clicked outside of the text window. The whole thing closed and discarded the whole text post! No draft, no warning! Thanks for wasting my time..Version: 11.8

Still buggyUpdate as of september 13th - the app still times out every time i try to log on. this has been a problem since the crashing update and has still not been resolved despite the 2 newest updates. decidedly unimpressed.Version: 9.2.1

In-app censorship is dangerous, sexist, and dehumanising to minority communitiesTumble uses a hashtag system to sort posts, which until this week worked well. In an attempt to make the iOS app more marketable, Apple has enforced mandatory censoring of the tag system, which flags content as inappropriate and hides it from other users, if the post is tagged with a banned word. The intention was to theoretically remove any adult content from the platform, and thus they banned a slew of more explicit phrases- understandably. However there were a great deal of non-explicit words that have been banned too. These words include - girl, Tony the Tiger, trigger warning, bald, about, reblog, medical, my gifs, racism, suicide prevention, and many more. I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing inherently adult about any of those words, and in fact the inability to correctly describe them (no trigger warning) now will put people at risk..Version: 22.5.1

DO NOT REMOVE THE REBLOG CHAIN FEATUREPlease. Please do not change your image viewer, please do not remove access to previous tags, please do not remove custom blog themes and most importantly, please do not remove your reblog chain feature. I'm literally begging you. This is the unique identity of tumblr and many of your users, including myself, stay and use your site/app for this very feature. We do not need another tiktok, we do not need another twitter, we do not need another facebook or instagram-we need tumblr to be just tumblr. You're throwing your early users under the bus to attract new ones when the majority of your demographic are the former and they are the ones who are keeping your site afloat. I've been using your site since 2012 and stayed despite all the bad decisions you've made since, but I will leave if these features are implemented and I'm sure I'm speaking for most of your users. Tumblr currently is a haven from all the monotony of other social media platforms because these features make it personal and highly interactive; they make it fun. Take those away and you're nothing, and you will be just like the others..Version: 30.3

Well…Where do I begin? The inability to get rid of the alt-right? The inability to get rid of pedos? The inability to get rid of pornbots? Oh maybe their newest release which WILL cause huge lawsuits and cease and desists and will get the site shutdown! Yeah let’s go with this newest update! Tumblr is a fandom blogging site, we produce fannish works. Fan made gifs, artwork, fics, videos of character from books, tv, and film. Their newest release Post+ allows people to put a subscription fee onto some posts, if (and when) someone decides to put their Destiel artwork, or Lokibus gif set, or their Johnlock fic behind a paywall, the respective owns of each set of characters will come down HARD on the site and the individual blogger. Ultimately, and very likely leading to a shutdown of Tumblr itself. Something tumblr staff haven’t seemed to understand. Do no download, for fear of legal action (which will result in thousands of pounds worth of fines and possible jail time)..Version: 20.7

Hellsite (derogatory)I have been on tumblr for most of my young adult life and i will continue to use it because i love the friends i’ve made the fandom, but my GOODNESS it is the most awfully run social platform i have ever been a part of. the new blocked tags list is absolutely ridiculous and makes no sense. this new update has nothing to do with actually making this website a safer place. do better.Version: 22.5.1

They're trying I guessTumblr staff do not care about their user base. They fail to acknowledge the needs of users and take away a large amount of the content that gave the site its appeal without any thought for how this will affect the communities they claim to hold so dearly, especially artists and models who have built livelihoods through this site. Their algorithms fail and their site is near non functional at this point. And it is overrun with alt-right members and literal Nazis, yet they treat NSFW content like the problem..Version: 12.3

They’re killing the siteThe problem: Nazis and child porn Tumblr Staff’s solution: Leave the nazis and pedos alone and get rid of all other 18+ content that makes up a large portion of the website. 👌 Plug the app has always been bad, never loads right glitches and logs you out. In general tumblr hasn’t functioned well in years so they decided to just kill the site and purge a majority of their users. 🤷‍♀️.Version: 12.3.1

ByePrior to recent changes I would use tumblr all the time and I have been on the platform for many years. Now we have really been shown that they don’t care at all for their users and would rather ban nipples than literal nazis. Hmmm okay it’s been fun but that’s the last straw for me. Don’t even bother with Tumblr, it’s like a bad ex, it will just waste your time and screw you over in the end.Version: 12.4

It sucks1. The ban was a stupid and useless idea, Porn bots are even worse then before. 2. Nazi’s are everywhere. 3. Tags aren’t working properly, either the wrong thing shows up or nothing at all. They are all sfw by the way. 4. Filtering is being buggy (some post with blocked tags are still visible while others with the same tag aren’t) Old post keep showing up on my dash instead of new stuff.Version: 12.4

Not worth itEver since they banned porn it’s not worth it.Version: 12.7

NOT SEIZURE SAFE, APP GIVES NO CARE FOR NONPAYING DISABLED CUSTOMERSDespite touting their “report an ad” function as fixing the epilepsy-causing problem that plagues the site, the function doesn’t actually do it’s job. It doesn’t even remove the ad immediately. Migraine and seizure inducing strobing effects are every few posts thanks to how many ads show up, and when you attempt to report an ad? It just goes “cool, we’ll take a look at it :)” and does nothing. I have reported the same ads MANY times, and will be discontinuing my use of the site as NONE of these ads ever actually stopped showing up. And when questioned about it, their spokesperson simply said they were ‘working on it’ months ago, and told disabled users to ‘buy ad-free’ This is basically holding the health of disabled users for ransom money. So many support tickets unlistened to. So many strobing ads. And their ad-free is double the cost in my country as they use USD only..Version: 31.7

DO NOT COLLAPSE REBLOGSThe Tumblr app used to be mediocre. It was an okay way of accessing the website. Chock full of bugs but at least functional, and the UI was similar of that to the desktop website; streamlined and intuitive. However, since Twitter was put under new management, Tumblr has been trying too hard to emulate Twitter. Staff consistently ignores what existing members of the website want. They keep implementing new "features," ALL of which are broken and genuinely unusable, and ignoring all feedback. For simplicity's sake, I'll just type a list of what I, and most existing users, want out of the app. 1. Roll back the "lightbox" update. It is broken and inaccessible. 2. Get rid of Tumblr Live, or add an option to INDEFINITELY mute it. 3. Put the post button back to the bottom center of the screen. The blue pencil bubble is an obvious Twitter rip-off, and it is permanently in that corner, which is annoying to look at. 4. Make the "following" tab the default tab for all accounts. The "for you" tab is obnoxious, and nobody is on Tumblr for its algorithms — Tumblr is for curating your own dashboard. 5. Stop with the constant layout changes. The way the app was around 2019 was great. Intuitive and easy to read. Changing it constantly drives away old users & scares away new users. 6. Fix the bugs. Just. Please. Add an easy-to-find bug report button and let us report bugs. And fix them. In a timely manner. Please..Version: 30.3

App/Site keeps going downhill.Ever since all the NSFW content was removed the Site/App has become less and less usable (with less and less valuable content). The advertisements are extremely invasive (aka on phone apps an advert will take up a screen and 1/2 meaning that you cannot scroll past them without inadvertently tapping on them, which ends up blasting audio and video that you cannot stop or mute, and it forces the user to force quit the app. In addition to this, even when there are no advertisements onscreen... the app still hijacks audio and makes any music or video I have running in the background glitch out, causing me to have to forcequit tumblr.) Now I don't know about other tumblr users... but the second I have to forced quit the app, I'm done with tumblr for the day. The content that remains since the purge is not worth me force quitting the app multiple times just to get to where I left off in the feed. So maybe if you want your users to use the app longer than 1 minute a day, you should get ride of advertising that autoplays videos and audio and advertising that takes up an entire screen so you can't scroll past without being forced to swipe across a booby trapped advertisement. (stick to jpg and animated GIF advertising, autoplay video/audio ads are aids/cancerous)..Version: 30.0

Used to be greatTumblr staff are determined to make this app just as irritating as every other form of social media, rendering it useless. This is one of the last corners of the internet free from algorithms and constant ads. Staff, quit making changes none of us want. We love our hellsite and we’d like to remind you that we will leave if it ceases to be what it is..Version: 30.3

Absolute rock bottomIn the recent wake of bad press following companies such as bethesda and blizzard, the folks over at Tumblr decided to try and out do them. The whole banning of NSFW content doesn’t even work. Sure you can’t search for it through the tumblr app, but you can still use google. Once you find a page, not all of the NSFW stuff is hidden. The bot in charge of flagging doesn’t know what the hell it’s doing. I tested a bunch of seemingly innocent pictures and about 80% of them went up for review. While some adult content slipped through unscathed. Eventually I kept getting errors within the app. I’m unaware if it’s just a shadow ban, or the faulty code. Making a brand new account seems to fix the problem though. Shady stuff. 0/5..Version: 12.3

God help meI could frankly care less about whatever features the app has or what kind of content is allowed in the rules. As long as I get to scroll mindlessly through my dash and occasionally spit out the odd text post that nobody will read, I’m pretty much set. So here’s the thing: I’ve got a phone and an iPad, both of which are ancient by technology standards. Probably not a decade old, but they can’t be far at this point. The app works fine on them. Glitchier than most I’ve used, but I can still do all two of the things I usually do on tumblr with ease, so I can look past it. With all that said, WHY does the app crash incessantly on my brand new phone? It’s the only app I have that does this, so I know the phone itself isn’t the problem. It freezes if I exit out of the app for a bit, sometimes if I reblog a post or look in the notes, it’ll freeze if I look at someone’s blog too long. The only thing I can do that doesn’t have a chance of crashing the app is scroll - and even then I can’t go down TOO far. I’m genuinely confused at how this app functions perfectly fine on the oldest devices that I have, and yet can’t seem to stay open for longer than ten minutes at a time on a two day old phone. I’m open to any reasonable explanations for this, because I’m honestly at a loss, but mostly I just hope this gets resolved soon. I can’t use my iPad out of the house and I absolutely refuse to redownload Twitter. This hellsite is my one source of entertainment, man, cmon.Version: 20.6

I used to love tumblrI’ve been using tumblr since 2010... my best friend put me on to it. I’ve been on and off for a few years now since i graduated high school. The app used to be good but now it’s just annoying. Still has funny post and is very informative but i hate the auto-reload feature. Since i don’t get on often, i like how i can scroll til forever without getting bored or seeing the same thing... but if i were to screen shot and send the funny or motivating picture to my friends or boyfriend, it refreshes as soon as i get back on. Small issue but highly annoying, i end up just not coming back for awhile again. Instagram i think is the only social media that doesn’t automatically reload. Yes you took away the NSFW content due to child pornographers which i 100% agree, get rid of the creeps! BUT to get rid of all nudity even if it’s pictures that are tastefully done or meant to be seen as art and not porn eh.... i think there should be a filter process... tumblr was great for expressing and exposing talent and creativity. You can’t put a limit on that. I don’t want porn back, but i don’t want my pictures being taken down because of an exposed nipple. Tumblr just not the same. People that were on before ALL the many many changes, know what i mean. Tumblr was a different outlet from your regular instagram or Twitter... it felt more private.. it felt more free... a place for creatives.... now it’s just.... blah. 🤷🏾‍♀️.Version: 12.5

Gone downHillI used to be on tumblr everyday because they aloud any and every sort on content on here and allowed people so share and express whatever they wanted. But now with this new crackdown on deleted explicit content, they’ve created a $#%* show of a site and it’s really taken away that wholehearted tumblr experience it used to have. Stop banning NSFW content and just crack down on porn bots and all those racist accounts.Version: 12.4

The new mobile update is badI’ve been using tumblr since 2012, and on mobile since 2013. Generally the mobile version has been okay, and fairly easy to use, but there’s a new update that’s being rolled out that is making it almost unusable. The dashboard buttons (homepage, write a post, notifications etc) have been removed from the bottom of the screen - where they were easily accessible - and into a side menu on the left of the screen. It doesn’t take a graphic designer to tell you that this makes it way more difficult to navigate the app. Additionally, if you want to reblog a longer post- at least on the iPhone 11 - it’s now impossible to add anything to the tags as the app will physically not let you scroll that far. I’m only giving this one star because i enjoy tumblr as a social media and i still appreciate aspects like the tag system and the fact that your follower count is invisible. Otherwise it wouldn’t get any stars. But the mobile app is so bad, you’d be better off just using the web browser on your PC..Version: 20.8

Moderating is importantGet rid of pornbots and neo-nazis. Leave us adults to decide whether or not we want to see NSFW content on our dash. Fire your devs and start a new team from scratch. Honestly I expect better from a large company like yahoo..Version: 13.8

Come on!!!Ok, hear me out. i love tumblr. it's my life ok? but recently i've been so against going on bc of the app! last time i came on, whenever i tried to refresh the notifications bar it would take ages and never load and then the loading circle thing would just stop. so, naturally, i'd drag down again to re-refresh it (the fact i have to refresh the refresh??) but it just keeps doing the same thing over until i have about three frozen spinning circles lined up in a little row! its so frustrating! so, i updated now, thinking SURELY they fixed it. but, its worst! at least before they showed me my five most recent notifications now it wont at all! and this app is so slow :(((.Version: 10.1.1

Started crashing since the last updateHas been stable for years but the latest update has been causing multiple crashes in different devices. Hoping they fix it soon..Version: 20.6

Good but flawedOn the one hand, I love this app because it’s a portable version of one of my favourite social media. On the other hand, it’s so flawed and buggy that it sometimes feels like I’m opening it because I have to, not because I want to. I’ll list the problems, because those are the most important that people know about. Problems/bugs: •Whenever I exit the app without closing it, there’s a 50/50 chance that it’ll reset when I reopen it, losing however much time I’ve spent jumping through new Tumblr profiles and comments. •When on someone’s (or your own) profile, you used to be able to just swipe left or right to switch between their posts, likes and who they’re following. Now you have to press the respective labels of each column, and this brings you back to the top of them, so if I’m halfway down someone’s likes and I see who they’re following, then go back their likes, I’m back at the top of the likes. Very annoying. •Not being able to select a picture in a set for full screen unless all the others have loaded, and if even one doesn’t load, you can’t full screen any of them. Again, very annoying •Whenever I select my own profile, the app has a 50/50 chance of completely freezing and crashing. Please for the love of god fix this..Version: 11.0

This entire app is notorious for a reasonTumblr has always had the reputation for ignoring user complaints about things that damage enjoyment or functionality of the app, in favour of half-assed improvements to aesthetics. Additionally, their management has for years let white supremacists, nazis, paedophiles, malware-spreading bots and bullies make as many blogs and posts as they want. The recent ban of any images of sexual nudity and its ineffective implementation (an ai filter than flags pretty much any thing and everything) raises the question - if they could have put effort into banning nipples, why haven't they put effort into banning the aforementioned harmful users? If you are new to this app/website - be warned. You will not be protected, you will not be listened to. Your time will be better spent learning how to program your own app. At least yours might not break every half hour and get passive-aggressive about it..Version: 11.5

IOS update ruined thingsListen, i love tumblr. However, the new iOS update changed the way and number of banned tags that users on the mobile app were using to help make the site a safe and fun place for everyone. The fact that this is only for users on Apple products makes me more than a little annoyed, and I no longer want to use the app if it means that the content I used to engage with isn’t there on iOS. A lot of my mutuals and I are into horror, and so blocking tags like ‘scopophobia’ and ‘body horror’ means that I can’t see ANY of the fan art when I’m on the iOS app. I’ve looked through the list of newly-banned tags and I’ve gotta say, I’m disappointed. None of them actually will work to ban the harmful or hateful content that might be uploaded, because they were being used in a way that I don’t think Apple understands. When someone is being transphobic, they do not end their posts with ‘transphobia tw’. Those tags are used by ACTUAL TRANS PEOPLE, who are talking about their life experiences or calling someone else’s transphobia out. Blocking that tag and removing the content means that we no longer get to share those stories anymore, and it does nothing to the actual transphobic content one might come across. The same thing can be said for racist and antisemitic posts. Additionally, some of the banned words are flat out ridiculous. Why is #girls banned? Or #long post? It doesn’t make sense, and it makes me not want to use the iOS app anymore. :(.Version: 22.5.1

You have killed itI have been using tumblr for years now and the only things that have ever made me truly feel uncomfortable are the numerous p0rn bots and blogs, and some of the truly hateful posts. Of those things the p0rnnbots and blogs are the things that I couldn’t escape. In this ridiculous ‘NSFW’ ban (which honestly isn’t working in the slightest) this app has lost the majority of its purpose. I have seen some of the most beautiful art on tumblr and it’s now being flagged. Censoring a site that is supposedly 17+ on the App Store is ridiculous. The site is all the worse for it as the REAL problems are still there. Tumblr has been a place for community for years and the only communities you are fostering now are hateful, sexist and even dangerous. I am disgusted that this has gone ahead when with some work it would have been possible to ensure the user base is of age, provide filtering options and work on eradicating the p0rnbots etc..Version: 12.3
