✓ Playing strength control not workingAt the beginning of a game, the program works more or less at the preset playing strength. However, during the middle game it often pumps up its rating significantly (validated with Crafty). A player at a moderate 1600 should continue to play at this level until the end and not suddenly play flawlessly. This is particularly annoying during a Blitz chess game..OrthoplanVersion: 1.11.0

✓ Good but no 3D viewShredder is a good chess engine that manages to simulate real players better than other programs like Chessmaster. However, it does have its flaws. Unlike other chess games it makes you pay again for the iPad version, even though it is exactly the same as the iPhone one, including crucially no 3D. I recommend that unless you're a beginner you turn off the meter that indicates which side is winning as it is frequently inaccurate. Also, Shredder will sometimes say, 'I don't think your last move was very good. Would you like to take it back?' typically after I've sacrificed a piece to gain position and then defeat it on the highest level, so only take notice if you're a beginner. ✓ Keeps crashing - have to reinstall every weekI have it an extra star because it's shredder. However, at least once a week the app crashes and won't open until I delete the app and reinstall it. The downside of this is I lose all saved progress. This happens on the iPhone 6 Plus. ✓ ChessThe app itself is rather good. The AI level is extremely impressive but, there is a but, the quality doesn't outweigh the cost. ✓ Good, but...... as the other reviewer recently said, it's a shame the app isn't universal - t chess pro represents far better value fir money and to be honest it has a lot more functionality. I mean, I love Shredder on my iPod Touch but I've recently got an iPad 2 and I can't see the need to pay 6 quid fir shredder on that, too, as I have t chess pro which also has an in app option to allow the analysis engine to utilise the dual core iPad CPU. Until Shredder catches up with the competition by adding such options and by the very basic inclusion of clocks/time options, for example, it's going to start losing the race to apps like T Chess and Chess Tiger (simply 'Chess' in App Store), which I understand is soon to go to iPad, not sure if it's as universal or paid, but it will likely have the edge over Shredder when it does as Shredder doesn't appear to be moving with times despite being a great engine. in fact, you may as well opt for Stockfish at this point in time.....universal, incredibly strong and free as well....RiverciderVersion: 1.4.5

✓ Adequate but uglyThe engine does a perfectly good job of playing chess, but the interface is cluttered and the experience is badly thought out. Some examples; - every time you touch a piece to move, that piece wobbles back and forth - it is weird and unnecessary and cheap-looking. - there is a button right in the middle of the screen which changes you from playing black to playing white, and takes a go. Why is this odd feature the central button on the screen? Pressing it is almost always a mistake. - There is a dial showing Shredder's evaluation of the board, which looks like something from the dashboard of a car. It's the only such element on the screen and looks very out of place. - if you make a bad move, a message pops up telling you you are an idiot and offering you the change to take the move back. But you already have an undo button and you'll see it was a bad move when you lose your queen. This popup should never appear. These sorts of issues make the game feel slightly 'zany.' At this price, I'd expect some polish. Would recommend tChess Pro instead..Steve CooperVersion: 1.4.5

✓ It works, but get the lite versionThe title says it all- this works well enough; but it’s slow and the puzzle solutions are full of problems. This app was highly recommended to me by two good players, so it’s disappointing to find several mistakes in their puzzle solutions within the first day using the app. I do like the customization of the board and pieces available and the fact that I can review and analyze other games, etc.; but the interface could be improved quite a bit. Overall, it’s decent for an easy way to ply against a bot of customizable difficulty but there are better chess apps out there..5320Version: 1.11.0

✓ Avoid this AppThis app is defective on many levels eg - declares draws when clearly not the case. There was only the black king on the board with 3 white queens, white rook and White Castle and it declared a stalemate draw - advised me to take back a checkmate move - frequently offers poor suggested moves - doesn’t clearly show when you have been put in check - no explanation on puzzles The list goes on. ✓ Not RealisticI’m getting sick and tired of this app. I’m a class A player (1800+) and like to play on the app on the rides home. No matter what setting I choose I get demolished at 1800. At the 1700 its too easy. I play live over the board tournaments all the time and rarely (never) do you see 1800 players attack wildly before they even develop. The app gets away with it because it has perfect calculation within a number of plays. If I wanted to play a harder level I would choose 2100+ in the settings. Please calibrate this app. If I wanted to play against a titled caliber player I would not choose the 1800 setting at normal. EDIT After almost 4 mths from my rating, the developer still has not made this a universal app or even suggested it will be.
