Shredder Chess for Positive User Reviews

Superb!!!!This is a must for chess lovers of any ability level. Well worth the price, don't waste your money on the cheaper alternatives. Buy it..Version: 0

SuperBest chess game.Version: 1.4.4

CanadianThis is a great program! The auto strength function ensures a good game at your level, and Shredder also plays in different styles. It's great to analyse ur games and see what u may have missed. Worth every cent. Has made me a better playerThanks.Version: 1.5.0

The best chess for iPhone!!!Absolutely perfect iPhone chess game! I love it! Thanks guys for 1.5.0 update for iPhone 5. Fantastic job!!.Version: 1.5.0

Simply stunning...Despite the relatively high price tag, this is worth every penny. No need to adjust the difficulty settings, just play "straight out of the box", and Shredder will make the correct analysis of your game and set the levels accordingly. All of this makes for a challenging, but rewarding experience that helps you improve, and enjoy, each time you play. The A.I. does actually feel like you're playing against a human opponent. Absolutely perfect!.Version: 0

ExcellentThe database works now and the new update is awesome!! Thanks.Version: 1.4

FantasticThis is easily the best chess app for the iPhone. Awesome..Version: 0

Love shredderI have 4 chess apps and this is my fave. Also, customer support is great, I had a question about the hint tool and they answered it within an hour. The 1000 free puzzles are great, if you don't have a clue, hit the hint button and it will tell you what piece to move. If that doesn't help, hit it again and it will tell you where to move it. If you can't figure out why that's the best move still, then enter analysis mode whereby it'll give you the next couple moves showing you how you end up with a free queen or bishop or whatever, upon which you say, duh, of course that's the best move, how did I miss that?!.Version: 0

Best By TestStop looking, becuse this is the Chess program you want! Just pick your playing level (in ELO) and Shredder will automatically adjust its strength (in ELO) after every game, while giving you an estimate of your own ELO. The level can be set as low as ELO 850 for a rank beginner, or as high as 2600 which is grandmaster level. This is the program that stared it all more than ten years ago before the iPhone was even invented. It was designed for a desktop computer, and recently adapted for the iPhone. Not only is this the best choice in the iTunes store, but the email customer support is outstanding! Look no farther. This is the best Chess program for the iPhone, IPod, iPad, and your desktop computer also! And of course you can email the games you play from your iPhone to your desktop computer for analysis by Shredder 12 or any program with powerful analysis features. As a bonus, Shredder has a mode for solving chess puzzles. Outstanding app at an extremely fair price..Version: 1.4.5

Best part is guidance and problem solvingI like the puzzles, the puzzles vary in difficulty level, so I do not find them too easy or too daunting. I keep on getting hints when I make mistake or I use analysis in the end. I would like some analysis for better lines in addition to the evaluation number..Version: 1.7.1

It's okay,but...Don't waste your time with the puzzle feature,because it's full of mistakes..Version: 1.7.1

Shredder chessOne of the best chess Apps I’ve ever seen. Great for steadily learning and building ‘chess confidence’..Version: 1.7.1

2500 in the palm of you hand. Excellent! The only thing to improve would be to add a library of e.g. world title games.Version: 0

Best chess appI don't mince words - seriously 5 stars.Version: 0

Best one everEven though this is expensive its definatley worth it, you easily change it to your level and heaps of other good modes, This is a MUST get for any chess lovers.Version: 1.3

Updated version 1.4.5I had some problems lately with the app crashing on me. After notifying the developers, who responded personally and promptly, I am pleased to report that the app is up and running glitch free. Aside from Shredder being one of the best (if not the best) chess app, what separates them from the rest is their exceptional customer service. Keep up the great work!!!.Version: 1.4.5

The best from my experienceI LOVE this app. My favorite parts that differentiate this program from others include the ELO rating of your play and the continuous evaluation of your position. The interface is also very intuitive and clean. A little perspective on who is giving this review.....I started playing daily about six months ago, and my ELO seems to be in the 1,200 to 1,400 range when I look at what program settings I can and can not beat on Shredder and ChessTiger. Also, I have played exclusively on my iPod and iPad. Playing daily, I'm obviously trying to learn as much as possible. I've found playing independently on Shredder while monitoring the progress of my 'Position Evaluation Meter' is very educational.....I can catch when I've made a major mistake, and take time to consider my error at the time. While I love the program, I do have one suggested enhancement. It would be great if the puzzles had a pop-up script to explain WHY the move that the program selected was "The Best". I realize this is a rookie request because more experienced players might always know, but it would be wonderful for educating players. Thanks for a great app, and my personal experience leads to a strong endorsement to others to buy..Version: 1.4.5

Joueur de clubLe meilleur jeu d'échecs sur iPod!.Version: 1.4.5

Great, with one caveatThis is a fantastic chess app - probably the best on the App Store. The biggest problem: I'm just really disappointed that you can play only one game at a time. You should be able to play multiple games you can toggle back and forth between. Right now, it's only one game at a time... Which makes it very slow for playing different positions or openings simultaneously. So that makes it a bit annoying to use as a self-teaching app..Version: 1.7.1

Can we have the collection of the chess champions gamesCan we have in a future update all the games from the chess champions from Murphy to Magnus.Version: 1.11.0

Simply wonderfulI love chess and I have many programs. My favorite for Pc is fritz. But I cannot just pack up my desktop and fritz and go anywhere. The IPhone Is an amazing Mini Mac basically, and shredder is perfect for mobile chess prep for tournaments. The puzzles are great and shredder will adjust to you playing strength. I live in a remote location and use shredder as my club partner as well. I've got a docking stand and I set my board up and we play all the time. He is also a great coach, warning me of any blunders I may make. I can go on and on about how great this app is, but there is not enough room for my praise. This app has helped me improve and I have someone I can play anytime anywhere. I salute the devs and the minds behind shredder. Cheers!.Version: 1.4.5

The bestThe best chess app for iPhone. Excellent adjustability for strength and play style, puzzles, coaching, a pleasure to use and the kind of app you can see yourself using for years, not days or weeks. Some nice new additions to the choices of pieces in this update. Developers very helpful with bugfixes too..Version: 1.4.5

Good for playing and recording games, and for "Seven Circles" trainingThis is a great app. The board and pieces are easy on the eyes, it can automatically adjust its playing strength to match your own, and it can export the PGN of games that you have played. I use it to play chess against the Shredder engine, to record games that I play against real people, and to do Michael de la Maza's Chess Vision exercises and "Seven Circles" training..Version: 1.4.5

Very Personal Chess Partner!I've only had Shredder Chess for a few days and I have to say it is without doubt in my opinion THE Chess game for the Iphone. I'm not a chess expert, but I used to like playing "live" with a human partner of similar ability. Computerised chess games soon lost their shine with me as I became bored (they almost always won!) Shredder Chess is totally different! It appears to match its ability to that of the human player, making each game both fun and enjoyable. As you improve, then so will it! There are many wonderful extras included in the programme which are also fun and interesting. But the bottom line is, if you like playing chess whatever your expertise, then this is the game for you..Version: 0

GoodThe puzzles are good. Worth the money, as I use this more than chess genius now. Would like to see a collection of annotated games but that's not a failing of the program, just wishful thinking. Solid interface, too..Version: 0

The Chess App the iPhone has been waiting forThe fantastic Shredder mobile has made it in App form at last. With all the features of the mobile phone version plus more, other chess apps are going to find it difficult to compete. Puzzles, analysis and human style play along with a user friendly interface this is a must have!.Version: 0

MY FAVORITE APPLICATION!FANTASTIC chess application! I love the design, feel and versatility of the program. Being able to save and e-mail your games is great, but the kicker is how many interesting chess puzzles the app offers. I've been doing the puzzles quite consistently for the last few months and I'm still nowhere close to finishing them all. Already perfect, however it would be great to see an option that more clearly walks you through opening moves. I would also like to see a library of famous and interesting games played by chess masters that you would be able to watch play out. A little history background info and playing style info on some of the chess greats would make this program hands down, the best chess app ever. Thanks for designing such an enjoyable chess experience!.Version: 0

Pretty much excellentAuto adjustment of the skill level soon finds your measure, allowing you to see your improvement on a graph over time. Great look and feel and sound effect. Technical support is excellent. Game analysis includes giving you an indication of the strength of your current position, hints for your next move and letting you know when you make a bad move (optional). Shredder caters for everyone from the beginner to grand master. It even makes common human mistakes on the beginner and intermediate levels. Apart from the multi player chess apps, I hone my skills with Shredder!.Version: 1.7.0

Love itI'm loving this app. Very full-featured. I especially like the way it adapts to your level of play and rates you - mind you the rating system is pretty generous when you consider it lets you take back moves in rated games! Strength-wise, any half decent chess engine should kill pretty much anyone except a master-level player, so it's a moot point for 99% of players. What's more interesting is the way it degrades it's play. I'm not quite convinced by Shredder's deliberate mistakes - it plays a strong game then drops some suicidal clanger. But it still makes for a fun, challenging game of chess, and having such a powerful analysis tool in one's pocket is terrific. Get it. The position setup feature gives it a big edge over Fritz, much as Fritz is king on the PC..Version: 0

My favourite chess appImmensely strong computer opponent, but will track your strength and adjust very gracefully if you wish which is particularly good fun, especially if getting inexorably busted every game isn't all you want. I'd like to see more blitz options but this is really a very classy chess app ESP if you are a strong player or want the app to intelligently match you own level..Version: 0

The one!Forget all the other chess applications, this is the one! I've tried all the other applications and they're not a patch on this one. I freely admit I would have paid more, it's worth every penny. I don't even bother with online chess anymore. If you love chess Shredder is a must buy! Conrad..Version: 0

Please optimize for iOS8 and iPhone 6/6 plusGreat application. Need screen resolution enhancements for iPhone 6/6 plus.Version: 1.7.0

GoodI love chess and i think this is the best one i've played, u could add a feature when u play a friend or something and the pawns take other pawns diagonly not skip next to the pawn & somehow still take it but other than that its great.Version: 1.4.5

Save up and buy itBest chess game available, and I actually beat the iPod without having to ask for help or take back a bad move. .Version: 0

Solid chess appA very nice chess app on both iPhone and iPad. As mentioned earlier it's a shame the app isn't universal, but I don't begrudge the developer having to eat; if you don't want to buy it twice I suggest you exercise your right not to. Actual constructive criticism - it would be nice to have a more structured approach to learning an opening..Version: 1.4.5

Great game!Love this game! Keep up the good work. **** stars just cause of the price..Version: 0

I like it!I bought it for the analysis part and I love it. I bought a different one for online play..Version: 0

Good appHasn't been updated in years but it is by far my favourite chess app.Version: 1.7.0

GreatBetter than HIARCS. HIARCS is all hype. This does what it says and has example chess challenges to test your thinking under pressure.Version: 1.5.0

Shredder Chess on Ipod TouchI really like this program especially its ability to tailor its playing level to suit my own. The tactics puzzles are really helpful as well. Highly recommended..Version: 0

Now this is a chess appVery well done.Version: 0

Great but...UI needs to be updated and needs to be resized. Overall great app. Happy with the purchase 🤗.Version: 1.7.1

Great chess engine, interface could be betterAs everyone else said, the engine is excellent -- one of the best if not the very best here. Some of the buttons and menu choices aren't intuitive and seem more difficult to find/use than some other chess games...which admittedly is due in part to more options and complexity than some other games, but the interface could still be improved. A note to the developer: is the splash screen really necessary? I want to touch the icon and see the chessboard immediately, not some splash screen. I have deleted some paid apps (and bought others as replacements) just because the splash screen annoyed me every time I used them. I'll put up with it in this case because it's a great chess app, but I don't like it splash screens on apps and am not alone in this. It ain't Windoze..Version: 0

Great App, but could be better! It's a great app and does exactly what it says, but there are some features that it doesn't have and others do. It'd be great if we could import pgn files into the app. Also, it'd be amazing if we could enter subvariations which would could also be saved in the pgn files of the game. . And if we could enter annotations this app would just be perfect!.Version: 1.4.5

The complete package!A great interface, customizable settings, and clean graphics makes this chess application the best I've used so far. It's vey user-friendly and rates your games while keeping track of your losses and wins (you can reset the count at any time). Also, solving one of the puzzles available increases your overall rating by a certain number of points cleverly calculated. Of course, what distinguishes this app from the competition is the dynamic evaluation of the state of the game (a gauge at the bottom of the screen shows who is winning overall after each move). This enables you to see your mistakes (the gauge suddenly shifts to your opponent's side after your move, showing you how damaging this last move was for the game) and really helps you improve your skills. Well worth the money..Version: 0

Just RightI am at 'serious club player' level. I have tried different programmes over the years, with Fritz on my laptop. This programme is a breeze to download and play, adjusting itself to your level as it goes. Looks nice, easy controls. For chess players not wanting to be ground to dust all the time, this does the job..Version: 0

Great Chess AppThis is a great chess app. I love the way it adjusts it's strength as you win/lose games. This makes it easy to see your progress. I emailed developer requesting landscape view of the board. I had a reply within the hour to say it will be added in next update. Great stuff..Version: 0

PGN would be niceGreat app. It would be helpful for reviewing games to be able to copy/paste PGN or even FEN data. Another wish is for more than one best-moves line, though I’m not sure where it could be fit on the screen..Version: 1.10.0

John gallagherThis is brilliant to use for a blind person it is the only Chess program that is strong that works with voice-over it would be truly brilliant if we had keyboard entry by far the best to use.Version: 1.5.0

Great app!!!Love this app. Recently using the setup and enter moves feature to play through games on the go. Richly featured this is more than a game. It's a useful tool..Version: 0

Awe inspiring masterpieceTo save you time the summary is: this games I worth every penny and so much more. Buy it. It has enough strength for any player but can play at my level. It is a grey learning tool too. Thanks to the makers. Awesome work..Version: 0

Best chess gameI've played many and on the iPhone this is by far the finest. Nice work..Version: 1.4.5

Expensive because its worth itChess is chess and at £5.99, Shredder is expensive. I will say that as silly as it sounds, this app does seem far superior in terms of quality when compared to the cheaper ones..Version: 0

Perfect.Excellent graphics, controls, menus, and loads of settings to play about with. Has improved my chess game within a week too. Thanks!.Version: 0

Great gameI read all the reviews on the US iTunes store (26!) and all gave at least 4 stars but everyone is harping about not being able to save and load games. This is untrue, read the notes, it's very easy. Small quip, I like the gameplay in Glaurung better, the jiggling pieces are silly and distracting. Everyone else has covered all the bases in other reviews,, nuff said..Version: 0

ISteven-AndrewPurchased a couple of the better chess applications now from the Apps Store and this is by far one of the best. Just loving the Elo function..makes me want to keep playing just to professionally improve my rating - Nigel Short, I'm catching up fast! If there could be just one improvement and that would be a function to store played games then be able to replay the whole game automatically..perhaps a future update eh but for now, very well done :^) Update Review: Well that one improvement came as of today - the developer indeed added a function which enables you store played games and replay them automatically..absolutely fantastic! There's even an added function that completes the whole package on par with other chess apps so that those thinking of dumping their previous apps can now do so and that's a 'tap-to-move' in addition to touch 'n' drag! You can now tap the piece you want to move, then tap the square you want to move it to..all with a little wiggle - brill! Just one thing, could the animation be a tad slower as a final polish - thanks! The five star rating system really isn't enough for this application but it's still worth every penny/cent/euro.. 5***** :^>.Version: 0

Best chess app hands downI have tried every one I could find sand nothing beats this. The puzzles it gives you to solve are great and if you think it is wrong and your solution is better it lets you convert the puzzle to challenge the computer and it's always right..Version: 1.11.0

Best chess programStrongest & adjustable. Great board & I'face. 5 stars when: (a) u can play unrated games (they currently all seem to count &sometimes u just want to muck around) (b) u can play with clock (c) u can play online @ chessgames But this still the best chess game on itouch!.Version: 0

Awesome! To be able to play to any ELO rating possible is just perfect for players of all levels. The app is simple and entertaining, with helpful hints if you are stuck for moves or make a ridiculously stupid one. Reccommended for any player, and even though £6 sounds expensive, the hours of play on this app will soon make the price insignificant :).Version: 0

50 Years of ExperianceYes you read that right, I have been playing Chess for 50 years ! In High-School I became a hero for getting all the Students a half day off ( this was 1972 ) to listen to( that famous match from IceLand ) I was in Grade 10 at that time and never lost a Single game in those 3 years ! Shreeder has me ranked me at ELO 2000 and I suppose I can say that I have some exposure at playing Computers because I have been playing them since they came on the Market in 1980 , and have played a multitude since ! So I say THIS and Hear me ( SHREEDER) is strongest Computer chess opponent I have ever Played !!! And I have played Fritz on a high end Pentium Computer ! 2 or 3 years ago . I have yet to play Shreeder any where near it's highest setting I Suppose because of that male ego thing. At Shreeder's setting I would Be lucky to win 1 or 2 out of 10. I really Believe Shreeder is the strongest out There IPhone or high-end PC ! on.Version: 0

LIke playing a humanI cannot praise his app and developer enough. If you are considering purchasing Shredder, do not hesitate any further. I am at the lower end of intermediate as a chess player and Shredder adjusts its level to my game flawlessly. It is not like playing a computer that is either way too difficult on one level and then just too easy on the lower one. Shredder constantly adjusts to always be challenging but never disheartening. It may take a few games before it gets your level but it does and then constantly adjusts. The play does not seem sterile like other computer programs that I have played. At my level at least, it seems to vary play significantly and just leaves me wondering how many hours have gone into producing such a great chess engine. Anyway, the graphics are superb, the boards and pieces look superb and are enhanced for the iphone 4 retina display and the interface for me is flawless. If like me you are procrastinating over which chess app to purchase, just buy this app and I bet you any money you will not look back. Last but not least, the customer service is second to none. I was almost shocked at how quickly my email was replied to..Version: 0

Excellent appFine program - doesn't just adjust its strength to yours, it plays sensibly at each level. It avoids the freakish openings backed by overly sharp tactics that some programs use..Version: 1.4.5

👍🏼Overall a near perfect app. There’s only a couple of small things I’d love to see in this to make it perfect (for me anyway): - An import game from snapshots function - Removal of the “too many promoted pieces” limit when making a custom game. (Currently @ 14 per side, would like 16 a side) - Being able to place pawns on the 1st rank for puzzle purposes I like to be able to make up my own puzzles using this app and the limit is a bit of a hindrance but otherwise a great app..Version: 1.10.0

Best chess app!I have tried many of the chess apps available and this is by far the best. It rates your play and automatically adjusts to your strength, so games are always interesting and challenging but not beyond your ability. The chess puzzles are great for a quick puzzle and improve your abilities. Also it looks great and is very well designed..Version: 1.5.0

Fantastic!Great app. Easy to use. Playing against Shredder is always fun because the app will adjust the playing strength after each game according to your performance. The puzzles are fun and challenging and I found myself spotting tactics much easier after doing the puzzles for a couple minutes a day. It's rewarding to see your playing strength rise over time as the app will graph out your ELO rating from the games you play against Shredder. Great people that are very quick with customer support. Highly recommended. Go buy it!.Version: 0

Best chess app for analysisI love this app. I review all my over the board games right away and save it. Works perfectly on the iPhone..Version: 1.7.1

ShredderExcellent chess program for club players and also beginners. Good for games analysing. I use it on my iPad and iPhone.Version: 1.7.0

Great Chess app.I'm new to Chess and this app helped teach the game and provides a great AI with all kinds of difficulty levels. I'm looking forward to getting to know the game more and improving..Version: 1.3

Great chess programVery good for learning chess, it adjusts its strength to your play so it never gets boring..Version: 1.7.1

Competent, engaging, makes you betterThis is the best substitute I have found for other actual chess players; the difficulty scaling is great and give a good, surmountable challenge..Version: 1.11.0

Quite Brilliant! To get such a strong playing version of 'Shredder' for less than £6 is fantastic, I have not seen another chess app on the iPhone that comes close to this program in terms of user interface, playing strength and ability to meet my needs of a mobile chess program. The app brings you the formidable Shredder chess engine along with an ability to customise the playing strength to meet your own needs. If you are winning too easily or losing too quickly, simply change the playing strength with the provided 'slider' control, alternatively set Shredder to auto-adjust its strength according to your play! In addition to playing chess the app also provides 1,000 puzzles for you to solve and be scored on, perfect for passing time whilst travelling etc. Well done to the the Shredder team, this is the best chess app on the iPhone!.Version: 0

Perhaps the definitive mobile game?I have to admit that playing chess against a computer opponent -- especially a great one like this with so many awards -- is as great a fun as against an actual person. There are so many options and settings in this particular implementation of the game. Computer AI strength can be fine-tuned to suit your own style and changed easily -- a big plus. I gave up on playing chess with actual people online a while ago because so many people get frustrated if they don't like the way you play and so they simply leave! Computer chess, at least, doesn't get mad at you, and you can leave the game for a day or two and come back to resume play where you left off. Overall, very nicely implemented. I simply need to develop the discipline to play as much as I can and spend less time in other apps. This is the game for the intellectual-minded, and you will be in good company with the many greats who know and love to play if you hone your abilities playing this particular app. Looking forward to improving my chess ability with this one. I feel like this is money well spent. This is only one of about 10 games I am keeping on the iPhone and is probably best in class. Also looking forward to playing even more on the iPad. Can you imagine having this game on the much bigger screen sitting in a chair like Steve -- or waiting for your flight at the airport or train station? Just make sure someone doesn't rip it out of your hands!.Version: 0

Brings back the JOY of chess! The magic is in its self-adjusting strength. After each game, it measures your ELO and makes itself into an approximately equal opponent. Finally, after trying many computer chess games, this feels like I'm playing a person. It's FUN! The puzzles and the beautiful interface and other features are all very pleasant and I look forward bringing my own game back, to getting my mind involved. Previously when playing a computer, I just couldn't care very much. Now I do. The psychology of what makes a great gaming experience is very complex and subtle -- this has it just right. In this case, it's something to do with an appropriate level of play combined with knowing that it's going to judge how well I'm doing. As you can see from other reviewers, I'm not alone in treating Shredder as something special. It's given me back my love of a good game of chess..Version: 0

ExcellentA great way to improve your game if like me you're not a strong player. I particularly like the winning/losing indicator and the ISO rating so you have at least some idea how well you're playing. It'd be great if there were an opening move tutor, but that's a minor issue in an overall great chess app..Version: 0

Fix the CRASHING! ; Auto-adjust makes Shredder a winnerShredder is still crashing on my iPod Touch 2nd generation whenever I try to create a new game. Please fix the app! --ORIGINAL REVIEW-- The two best iPhone chess apps are undoubtedly Shredder and Fritz (both fine games which I own). Fritz has the better UI. Fritz also has the stronger chess engine by far (I have personally conducted Fritz vs Shredder games; Fritz won all 3 games) However, what sets Shredder apart is the auto-adjust engine. It's not just a marketing gimmick - it makes the game much more fun. No more getting mercilessly dominated by the computer; Shredder adjusts to my playing level so each game is challenging but winnable. Even though Shredder's engine is weaker than Fritz, it's still strong enough to beat 99% of chess players. However, Fritz does get points for a beautiful UI and a 2-player mode. Both chess apps are good; if you have the money, get both. Otherwise, get Shredder..Version: 1.4.4

Perfect new update for larger screen yetWorks good.Version: 1.8.0

Shredder for iPhone is fantastic!Shredder for iPhone is fantastic! It is clearly the very best chess app available for playing against your iPhone. Breath-taking graphics, great options and the finger interface with the piece popping out forward of the finger a few millimeters is the most elegant solution to the problem of an adult finger covering the piece. Truly Excellent. I know what I’m talking about. I have been immersed in the Palm, Java Phone and Blackberry worlds in the recent past and have used all of the chess programs available for those platforms. I have also purchased Chess Genius and Fritz for iPhone and feel that this is much superior. The only way you could improve on this is if it connected to ICC or FICS, allowing you to play against other people around the world..Version: 0

A great way to play and improveContrary to what some people here said, I think the interface is great. It gives you a confidence inspiring feeling that somebody much better than you is looking at you while you play trying to teach you. The difficulty setting works great compared to other programs I've used. It does make a difference unlike others where for instance level 1 would sometimes be extremely difficult and sometimes be unbelievably stupid. I like shredder. It's the best I've seen..Version: 1.4.5

Great little appI've been using Shredder Classic 3 on my desktop for ages. This is a great little sub-set. Keeps me from going bonkers in the Doctor's waiting room or sitting waiting for a train! The graphics are impressive. Haven't found a way to reset a game to the start yet except by using the back button to retrace all the moves. I've only played a few games against it at a low level and I'm sure it won't be as strong a player as the desktop version (World's most powerful chess program for PC's) but plenty strong enough for casual entertainment..Version: 0

Great Chess appThe adjustable strength helps me as a 1450 player most comps destroy me very easily! I agree on openings comments, would be nice to learn them more easily, but can't fault the app which offers good chess anywhere. I fully recommend it for any chess enthusiast..Version: 1.4.5

The Chess appAmazing speed and good gameplay. I was told that this is 'the' chess app, and thankfully at this price it appears to be correct. One of the few games I have found which can justifiably claim to be cheap on the basis of comparison to PC versions. It's a fair call..Version: 0

Hours of funWho needs friends when you have Shredder Chess.Version: 1.4

Best offline chess app by farGreat!.Version: 1.7.1

The best chess app by a distanceShredder is easy to use, has chess puzzles and the computer has a number of playing styles and adapts its strength according to your ability - it's ideal for improving your chess!.Version: 1.5.0

The Best Over-All Chess!!!!Great improvements!!! Now I will test this new Shredder against Hiarcs with an Elo 2800 and Stockfish with an Elo 2500. Right now Shredder has an Elo 2600!!! I am very thankful I have this on my iPhone! This was my old review: Shredder is one of the best when playing on the computer but with my iPodtouch it is not commendable. With an Elo rating of 2400 as it claim to be at master's strength, it cannot even beat a free chess engine on my computer with an Elo of 2300. Please make it more stronger, at least 2700 Elo strength!! It can beat any chess app in the Apple platform except Glaurung and Chess Genius! All other features are outstanding except the arrow meter which somewhat annoyed me. If only we can hide those buttons like the interface of Chess Genius to display chess openings and analysis would make it the best!! The chess puzzles included is great too! The Elo rating tool is another good feature for it will measure your improvement. But what disappoint me is that there is no replay button. You will not be able to save games and replay it. You cannot import pgn files eventhough pgn is supported. It is only usable when exporting your games. Please make some update!! I made this review and comment on the original version. And since they made some changes I feel like oblige to change the rating of  to . Now I can replay and load saved games. Thanks for the update! Please make the engine stronger at least 2500 Elo rating..Version: 1.4

Great.Easily one of the best along side Fritz. I own Fritz 12 and looking forward getting Shredder 12 and Houdini.Version: 1.4.3

Finally native!Shredder Chess has been available for Macs for a while and has an outstanding engine. The problem-solving feature in the engine is an outstanding tutorial and has gotten me out of many a jam. I played the web application before the App Store became available and cursed every time I lost a connection in the middle of a good game. I begged them to submit a native application. This application is solid. It does not crash. It features much of the same engine as runs on your computer. Heck, they are even offering a discount on the computer application with the purchase of the iPhone application. Shredder will rank your play. You can gauge yourself and grow with the game. You can see your rank improve. The game can be set to emulate human mistakes. It can also vary the skill of your opponent. If you regularly play chess and want to improve, Shredder is better than most chess books. If you are a beginner and want to learn basic strategy, Shredder will help. This game is long-anticipated and recommended. This is _the_ chess game to get for your iPhone. I would love to see this available as a Game Center game for online play, too..Version: 0

AmazingOne feature I would love to see is an option that would hide the 'hint' button. If you exit game to settings to change this back you loose shredder tracking your ELO/game. I just find the hint button a bit tempting to see if I've really chosen the best move and would enjoy an option to hide it. Original Review: This is by far the best chess app for the iPhone. I have become a much stronger player because of it. It adapts to your playing so you are always playing at an equal level and it rates your progress. Well done devs!! I wish there was a way to upload famous pgn games to study..Version: 1.5.0

Fantastic!I have tried many other apps before wanting to shell out the 8 bucks, however this is well worth it! Actually makes a chess app enjoyable rather than confusing and frustrating!.Version: 1.3

Very good app, however....... Still pricey. Sure, this is a REALLY good chess app (the best I've tried) but there are better apps out there (not necessarily chess) that are cheaper/free. For 7.99 I wish Shredder would allow you play against others via the Game Center in real time. Other than those two small complaints, this is a five star app..Version: 0

ShredderExcellent chess program. One of the best around. Only thing missing is the ability to import pgn files but other than that shredder is awesome..Version: 1.4.5

One of the top chess apps in the App Store!I have two other chess apps for my iTouch in addition to Shredder Chess. They all seem to have their own personalities...it's like playing three different people rather than the same person all the time. I would say Shredder is right up their at the top of the heap. One thing I love that the other two programs don't have is the scoring meter which shows whether black or white has the current advantage. I also like that Shredder shows what pieces have been captured...only one of my other programs does this. Out of the three programs Shredder seems to be the one I play the most. I do think that it helps one learn better by playing against several of these programs rather than the same one all the time. Even though I only bought the full Shredder program today I have been playing the "lite" version over the past several days. Thank you Eiko for running the Christmas Eve special pricing on the full version. Keep up the good job!.Version: 0

Nest chess appA little pricy but worth it, the puzzles are ver good to learn chess. The interface and controls are simply perfect, I can't think of one thing I would like to add or change. Don't even think about playing this monster at the highest difficulty levels.Version: 1.3

Best on showThere are plenty of chess apps, and paying for another one probably isn't desirable. However Shredder is worth the asking price: it plays a very mean game yet at lower levels makes consistent moves. In other words the program's blunders are relatively subtle, like a human player, which is hard to find in computer chess. For PGN importing and maintaing database/s, consider tChess Pro as well. Shredder does analyse and grants PGN exporting for third party analysis..Version: 1.7.0

Friendly and QuickThe interface is excellent and easy to use, response is quick. Good enough to setup position and do analysis. The drawback is no PGN import. The chess engine is only up to 2600, not able to solve some endgame puzzles. I have to turn to Fritz for solution..Version: 1.4.5

Brilliant! For serious chess players, this app is right at the top of the pile with ChessGenius and Glaurung. The puzzles and adaptive difficulty mode make for an engaging experience that will keep you coming back for more. (And I like the little arrow meter.).Version: 0

The best chess appGreat app, also great on iPad.Version: 1.7.1

Wonderful.A fantastic chess experience. Instructional and challenging, adjusting to the skill set of the user. It has been a great tool for me to get back into chess..Version: 1.4.5

Great app at such a low price!I'm just getting into chess seriously and find this app is a perfect pocket chess opponent and teacher for me at all levels as I improve. It is worth every penny whether you're a novice or grandmaster. Buy it. Now..Version: 0

Excellent ProgramShredder for the iPhone is definitely worth the $9.99 price tag. I own Shredder for the Mac, Fritz 11 and Chessmaster 11 for the PC. I use each program for different purposes. Shredder for the iPhone is great when I don't feel like pulling out the laptop or when I'm not at home and want to have a quick game or just do a few puzzles. My FIDE rating is a 1580 and I would recommend this program to everyone regardless of their rank. I think the programmers did a great job on their first release and I'm sure the program will only get better as time goes on. Like other people mentioned there is a little room for improvement, but not much. If you enjoy chess spend the money on this program and you won't be sorry..Version: 0

Simply diamondI would give it full 5 stars if it allowed multi-player via games centre. I would like to have a serious game with a real person now and again to gauge how much i've improved (if at all). With this, it would be good if the multi-player game did not have to be real-time, but it could spread out over time. ie, I make a move now, the other guy after an hour, then me tomorrow...That would allow people to have 'casual' games that does not involve having to specify time and sit down to play. Other than that, it is perfect for me, as it automatically adjusts its level based on how good I get, which makes me always on my toes!!! Diamond!!!.Version: 1.4.3

Brilliant!Best chess app out there. Shredder automatically adjusts to your playing strength. Well worth the money. Only trouble is the time I spend glued to it. Oh, and the support guys are really quick and helpful too..Version: 1.4.5

Best chess software anywhereI have own most major chess app on of. This little one is the most enjoyable. Adjust to your strength, blunder alert, even have a little arrow show which side is better after each move. It is very fast and reliable. I really do not care about fancy board and endless menu items on those pc software, this one just get out of your way and let you do what you love to do which is play a good game of chess and have fun. I did not even mention 1000 puzzles come with it. Best thing ever happen to my iPhone since, well iphone. Keep up the great work!.Version: 0

As good a chess program as I could hope to find for iOSThe engine is good and the feature where it auto adjusts to your playing strength is very good - particularly when combined with the way it can randomise it's playing style - leads to a stream of competitive matches, with good AI, in the varying styles you get from playing different people. Good coaching function too. At its strongest it is assuring as a GM would need. Highly recommend..Version: 1.4.5

Iconic BenchmarkThis App doesn’t disappoint. There’s so many Chess Apps to choose from and this is the one that’s stood the test of time for me. You should aim to play at least 10 games a day and expect to lose at least 8 of them if you want to improve. Winning a Chess computer is straight forward (right) all you have to do is achieve 1 of 3 things… Achieve Checkmate Get it to resign Cause it to run out of time Doing this is requires skill and Shredder can help you improve your skill with the built in coach feature. No subscription, no advertisements; just a functional Chess engine. It’s a winner for me..Version: 1.11.0

Great chess appAfter a couple days playing this I can say it is a very engaging application that will greatly improve your game. It is worth the money, and it is the best chess app I have found. I have only given this four stars because I have to switch to friends for chess if I want an online game. Once this is worked into this game (or if it is) it will be an absolute killer app in my opinion, that would put the competition safely away!!!.Version: 0

ExcellentSearched for reviews of chess apps all over the net - Shredder & tChess seemed to emerge as the top 2 contenders. Tried Shredder Lite - Great! Then tChess Lite - very disappointed that I had to fork out money to test drive a LITE version of tChess - that's just wrong. For those interested in 3D boards (I was, and that attracted me to tChess - Shredder doesn't have 3D), if you have an iPad, that's fine (the 3D worked well), but note that AN IPHONE SCREEN IS JUST TOO SMALL TO TRY AND DO CHESS IN 3D! This is the case, regardless of how good the programming might be. That said, tChess doesn't allow landscaped mode, which would increase the amount you can zoom the board before you start losing stuff off the screen. Shredder is more feature rich, has a world class engine (12-time world champion), with real ELO ratings (while tChess' engine is untested in the professional arena, and therefore unrated). When it comes to actually playing chess (on a 2D board that I can clearly see the whole of, thank you very much), the actual game play of tChess Lite was perfectly acceptable. 30 minutes after opening tChess Lite, I returned to Shredder Lite (man I wish lite versions were all free - that quick test-run cost me money!), and have since upgraded to the full version of Shredder. (I didn't upgrade for weeks - you would have to be quite a good player to be limited by the free version.) I did my homework, tested them out, and (3D aside), Shredder CLEARLY won..Version: 1.3

LDalog boxes unresponsive under iOS 81. Liked the 100 problems on the free app so much that I took a crowbar to my wallet and shelled out the $7.99 for the additional 900 problems. Was looking for a cheaper app with more problems. There used to be an app with 1200 problems but I could no longer find it. These problems are just right for a 1900 rated player like me but might be too difficult for weaker players. There needs to be different levels of problems. BTW, because the free app selects random order for the problems, there were 28 repeats out of a 100. 2. I think that the user interface could be simpler. The "+" symbol does not seem intuitive. Took me awhile to find the analysis mode. Need a 1 step method of going from problem to analysis mode. Would like to be able to cut and paste games. 3. Didn't like the default colors, but fortunately you can change them. Prefer the graphics and user interface on tChess. 4. Like the strong engine for analysis. Haven't done any playing yet. 5. Mel1995 seems to be describing a different app. I have seen none of these problems..Version: 1.5.0

Shredder CoachCoach is not too flash. Tells me I have made a poor move when I am two moves away from winning the game..Version: 1.4.5

Mr.I'm relatively new to chess, but this seems to have all I would ever require, with great variation of settings for player ability etc. & it seems to run flawlessly. I appreciate the old & new looks to chose from too. A great app. I guess you get what you pay for!.Version: 0

Shredder :)Steve, you can hide the equity meter by turning it off in the settings menu. Likewise the coach function. Also, if when you touch a piece you then take the trouble to move it to another square, you will be spared the zany wobble which indicates a) the piece you elected to move, and b) that you have not yet indicated a destination square..Version: 1.4.5

Nicest chess app I've found yet.It seems like all of the chess apps advertise the strength of their engine, which is nice if you're Garry Kasparov, but for the rest of us mortals isn't very helpful. Shredder is wonderful if you're not at the grandmaster level, in part because of its adaptive difficulty mode (it gets harder when you win and easier when you lose). Other apps have tutors, which tell you when you're making a bad move, but this is the first that I've found that shows you why it's a bad move. Add a clean interface, cool meter that shows which side is winning, and chess puzzles, on top of all of the features that everyone else has, and you've got a real winner..Version: 0

Simple and great quality offline supported chess appThere’s no subscription you needed or many different courses. It’s very simple and intuitive chess app. I’m so glad that the developer still doing update work!.Version: 1.10.0

Wonderful supportNot only is the software top notch but the developer happily answers my emails and assisted me getting shredder up and running on my Linux laptop plus iPhone and iMac. Without out a doubt I am better chess player because of shredder, it's intuitive, slick interface and challenging engine is perfectly suited to the beginner right on up to expert player. Buy it, it's no more than the price of a cup of coffee and a sandwich. Well worth it.Version: 1.4.5

Very, very goodI am very impressed at this app. It has a very strong engine and many great features. I love it. The price is worth it, it's very smooth and just a great, well rounded app. But there are a couple of things I'd like to see added: 1. A clock for playing against Shredder. I think this would be a useful. Shredder does move remarkably quickly for its strength, but I think a clock would be nice. 2. A more available opening book. I know Shredder does have an opening book, and uses it whilst playing. But if would be great if you could just tap in a position, and look on the options list for 'opening book', and it would tell you the book moves. 3. I know this is a big ask, but it would turn the app from very, very good yo absolutely stunning. A database of grandmaster games, where you could put in a position, and look it up in the GM and IM database would make this app crazily good!! Thanks for a great app!!!!. AppLovingHuman.Version: 0

Great appI am blind, and its great to find a chess app that is accessible with VoiceOver. I had never played chess before until i bought Shredder. I'm not that good at chess, but hopefully i'll learn the more i play. I would recommend this app to anyone..Version: 1.7.0

Love this, would happily buy an updateThis is just a rock solid chess app. The engine is great, there are no silly gimmicks, and the interface is clean with the options you’d expect..Version: 1.7.1

Shedder RULES!I absolutely LOVE this app! Shredder is by FAR the best chess app I’ve ever used. It’s breathtakingly FAST! Using it in “aggressive mode” is how I like to use it, because it makes every game FUN! Beyond the excitement of each game played that way, I find that taking additional time to study the record of each game solidifies my understanding of what the hell happened 🤔 🤣 A summary of all my experience doing battle with Shredder: among all the best living players I’ve ever gone up against — even the most accommodating, patient, informative, and generous of opponents — none has taught me as much in such an amazingly short time as has Shredder. In aggressive mode, even though I realize it’s thinking far, far ahead and referring to a huge database of games played by grand masters to prepare itself for each potential move (modifying both its strategy and its tactics along the way), it makes each move so ridiculously quickly that I just pretend I’m facing a truly awesome competitor who will still gladly teach me how to weigh the options in any given situation and to think ahead the way he does. It’s wonderful! ♥️ *** I’ve enthusiastically recommended Shredder to every chess lover I’ve ever known, and each of them has wound up doing exactly the same. Pass it on!.Version: 1.7.1

Still rocks after 2 years of no updatesI believe this is my best purchase on a chess app on IOS. I spent $7.99 in Feb of 2013 for this and after 10 years and many IOS version updates Shredder chess still is my go-to chess app for puzzles, playing, and learning. 1000 puzzles is a lot, and the best thing is I can continue playing against the engine at the position where the puzzle is solved for endgame practice..Version: 1.11.0

FabulousBest chess app to date! ELO auto-adjust is great for measuring progress, as well as many puzzles and the ability to set up the position. All it could do with is a time control setting..Version: 0

This is the best iPhone Chess App and I've tried them allI began a bit biased, I admit, since I have the regular full version of Shredder on my PC. The program is great, the interface is beautiful, and the engine is world class. Now we have the App version and it was worth the wait. After strong playing strength which is a given with Shredder, the most important thing for me is how the pieces look and feel when interacting with the board. The shredder team has obviously been working on this since the App software went public because everything is beautiful. It is also fast to move, responsive to touch and commands, and logically layed out. And the puzzle feature is a great bonus feature. This program is brand new as I write this and I've only had a few hours to test it, but I love it and highly recommend it..Version: 0

It's the only chess app you'll need. This *is* the only chess playing app you'll need. I mean, there are some rather good databases available here too which are worth investing in, but for a simple, gimmick free way of playing chess against an opponent that can be as weak or as powerful as you want, Shredder is the one. For many years I used Fritz and was hesitant to try anything new, but I am glad I did..Version: 0

Excellent for all levelsI am not an advanced player so I really enjoyed the suggestions and warnings when the program thought my move wasn't wise. I set a lower level opponent and have been enjoying the game. The computer takes no time to think. It's really fast. I also like the puzzles in the app. Btw I let a friend who is more advanced play a higher opponent and he's impressed. I wish there was more instruction though. When I make a move, it tells me the name of the move (eg the name of the opening I used) but not more. Overall I recommend this game highly. If you don't want to spend so much you can always get te cheaper lite version..Version: 0

Great but iPhone onlyApp works great and very good at matching the computer to the skill of the player. My only gripe is that the app is not also iPad capable (it works but the screen is not configured for the iPad losing the top section to iPad indicators). Why buy the app twice for each platform? Decided to try a different Chess app for the iPad (it happens to work on both iPad and iPhone) I wonder which I will prefer to use in the long run?.Version: 1.5.0

CheckmateSo as an avid player I have scrabble, sudoku, and chess on my iphone. I can play each for hours without hesitation. I tried a few free chess players and then moved on to the real chess engines such as Fritz and Shredder. I purchased both and wasn't much a fan of Fritz. Fritz does offer an entire game review but Shredder offers a ton of chess puzzles along with play by play suggestions. Not only that you can take the chess puzzle and complete it to fully understand the puzzle that was offered. I'm hoping to see their tutor software to be released for the Mac so I can start picking up some new strategies. The Elo rating matches you as you play so you can get better and play the computer as competitive as you can. It would be nice to see this app have some online play... I probably wouldn't use it but it's the only thing that seemed missing..Version: 0

NimzokarlaThis chess program is simply awesome. Plays at medium / fast time controls and haven't figured out how to change this yet but even so it plays a brutal game of chess crushing me relentlessly. Adaptive elo rating makes for a very balanced game though once you've played a few matches. Highly recommended to any enthusiast no matter what your level. Hard to find any serious flaw of any kind. Simply superb..Version: 1.4.5

Need landscape mode!Excellent chess app, just 4 stars since there is no landscape mode which is really annoying since this is now installed on an iPad which I always use in landscape...... Please fix!.Version: 0

Best single player chess app!Any chance of getting an update to support the X and above screens?.Version: 1.9.0

One of the bestThere are several really nice chess engines for the iOS, and Shredder is right up there around the top. It has a really nice chess quiz/ puzzle feature, which most of the others lack, and it's really nice, but one thing I will point out in Shredder's favor that means a lot to me is that it is actually *fun* to play against (well, fun for a computer opponent, anyway). It adjusts its strength to match yours, and it is probably the best engine at doing this that I've played. It usually feels like you are playing an equal opponent rather than just stupidly dropping a piece, then getting super strong for a while until it's equal, then stupidly dropping a pawn, etc. If I want to try to get the strongest analysis of a certain position on my phone, I'd probably use Hiarcs, since I think it's stronger, but I don't enjoy playing against Hiarcs, for whatever reason. Shredder feels more human, as an opponent. If you are looking for a strong chess engine, though, you can hardly go wrong with Shredder. It's going to beat you every time if you unleash its strength, unless you are a grandmaster. And it's probably pretty annoyingly strong even then..Version: 1.5.0

Exceptional!Truly amazing..Version: 1.7.1

New found enthusiasm for chess!I stopped playing chess awhile ago as I felt I just wasn't improving any longer, turns out I just needed a coach. Shredder has helped me improve 200 points in just a month by guiding and challenging me with it's excellent puzzles. I highly recommend this program. Only thing lacking is a online play feature wrapped into the package..Version: 0

FantasticShredder is - by far - the app that gets the most use on my iphone. Easy to use, always competitive without being too hard, good looking, fast, and has improved my game no end. I'm so glad I wasn't too put off by the price; it is easily the best app I've bought..Version: 0

Great app for noob to masterI am 2100 USCF and this app consistently crushes me on its high levels. For a portable chess game, this is simply great. I definitely got my money's worth and more..Version: 1.3

Outstanding app and great customer serviceThis is by far the best chess app I have tried. Well worth the money! What's more, the customer service is far beyond what you would expect for an app that only costs a few pounds! Long live Shredder!.Version: 1.4.5

Awsom!!!!!!!¡!!!!¡¡!!!!!¡!!!!!!This game is da bom!!!! Best game eva!!!!!! : ).Version: 0

Easy to use and humanAfter reviewing several chess apps I settled on this one. The board is clear the interaction intuative and the adaptive playing level is perfect. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because I would like some sort of tuition built in to improve my game. Otherwise it's perfect..Version: 0

My Favorite Chess AppThis app is great. The developer has been very helpful, even with minor concerns. It is also accessible to blind people, which is necessary for me. I would recommend this app to anyone..Version: 1.7.1

Solid but...The most solid chess app I have purchased (have about 10). Easiest movement of pieces, simple yet powerful interface, superb analysis mode etc. Buy it and you won't be dissapointed but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, please fix this app to use modern algebraic notation that the chess universe has used since before the invention of the cell phone! Does anyone who plays chess really want to see 1. e2-e4 Ng8-Nf6 instead of 1. e4 Nf6? Look at open source Crafty code and change it in an afternoon. Thanks (still the best app though).Version: 0

Perfectt! i would give 6 stars if I could.I wish it hadBlindfold. This application runs well and is updated regularly. What I would like (more than voice over) is the ability to play blindfold games against shredder..Version: 1.4.3

The best iPhone chess appShredder though getting old is still easily the best chess application in the App Store for iPhone or iPad..Version: 1.7.1

Tremendous learning experienceI've been playing Shredder Chess on my iPod Touch for a couple of years. I've always struggled with getting beyond the opening moves in the game. This app has greatly improved my play and I can actually beat the computer a bit beyond the easiest level. The AI learns the way I play and has enabled me to move beyond the basics. Santa recently brought me an iPad and I expect to be purchasing Shredder Chess HD, as I believe that the larger display & added features will be beneficial to my continuing advancement in this fascinating game. My only recommendation to the developer would be to add a 3D option for the display..Version: 1.4.5

Good, but needs work.I've owned shredder since I've had the iPhone 2g, and it really is a great app. I've even purchased the iPad version. There are some bugs lurking, however. It seems that the opening book has severely weakened since the latest version was released. For example 1.e4 g5? is a favorite for some reason, an opening which is easily refuted. There's also a maddening frequency of Alekhine's defense. Why not 1...e5 or 1...c5 against 1.e4? Because of the processing speed of the iPhone, Shredder is susceptible to wins based on piece sacrifices that it didnt calculate far enough in advance (it almost never 'sees' classical bishop sacs). Lastly, shredder seems to play weaker when the player deviates from the computer's main line. This is noticeable when shredder plays strongly after you hit "hint" for every move, but plays weakly after the player makes a different move from the hint..Version: 0

Good chess but few updatesSo the chess is good fun and the coaching can be useful. I enjoy this app and the difficulty isn't so hard it's unenjoyable for mere mortals like me. However, the app gets updated so infrequently and it's annoying when things move forward but the app doesn't. I have an iPhone 6s Plus now and the app is scales up to fill the screen making it look poor. Please update when new screen sizes come out so we can enjoy Shredder at its best..Version: 1.7.0

Well worth the moneyGreat chess program..Version: 0

ExcellentMy favourite IPhone Chess implementation (and I’ve tried most of them)..Version: 1.7.1

Coffeehouse Champ? The actual strength of Shredder is most impressive, which. I personally attest to based on sudo matches against HIACS which is rated 350 ELO points higher. That is Shredder even won a game with the white pieces. Two problems do exist though. Shredder has a design format that is iPhone oriented which looks skewed on an iPad, not to mention that the interface layout leaves a little to be desired. More frustrating is that the standard Openings played by Shredder are very coffeehouse. Still a strong computer with an obnoxious personality makes for a very good training partner...Again for the consumer if you get annoyed or board with Coffeehouse Openings you can of course program your choice! Great but flawed!!!.Version: 1.5.0

My go-to Chess appNothing to complain about really. With decent play and puzzles this is a great offline chess app. If I could change one thing it would be to use standard algebraic notation..Version: 1.7.1
