SmartGo Player for Negative User Reviews

Game is back, but terrible for learning.Whatever other comments saying there was no game are about has been solved, but this app is still pretty useless for learning. The computer player goes insane if it thinks you are going to win and plays whatever moves it thinks have a remote possibility of taking the win back rather than actually playing out for as many points as it can. I suspect it also plays conservatively when winning, favouring a definite small win even when it could put more pressure on. This results in either losing by 1-3 points or winning by 90 on a 9x9 board and never actually getting to practise in a remotely realistic situation..Version: 2.6.1

No game in the app! There is no game in this app, just a tutorial. App description is misleading and actually fraudulent.Version: 2.6

Frustrating, and not for the beginner.I am a complete beginner in learning to play Go, however I've played chess for many years so am no stranger to this type of strategy game. However I'm completely frustrated that I cannot improve my game using this app. I'm continually stuck at a very low level as I feel there are not enough examples of various strategies, especially openings, or multiple plays, which puts me at a disadvantage when playing the computer opponent. I'm about to give up on the app and by a decent book on the subject. This programme is not for the raw beginner..Version: 0

Stone lagMy main gripe about the app is that there is a small delay in the animation when you place your stone. (Compare with the responsiveness of Tsumego Pro) The UI is messy and not very intuitive, but I got used to it. The actual content of the app is very good, I’m having fun..Version: 2.6.1

Good for learning, annoying for playingThis is an excellent way to learnhow to play Go. It has a walk-through tutorial which shows you how to play and explains the rules. Playing against the computer is especially difficult, the game will resign very early on if it thinks it is loosing, as well as that it often seems to win inexplicably. Otherwise though a very entertaining game and a great way to learn..Version: 0

This game cheatsWhile the tutorial is worth it the rest is total bs, upon rereading the rules the game actively cheats. One such issue was the game refusing to allow you to place a stone in a location that would result in you being surrounded (captured) even if the result would allow you to surround said enemy stones, if you want to play a game you yourself have to constantly rewind moves to prevent the game from cheating go ahead..Version: 2.6

Good tutorial, but hard to use for gameplayThe tutorial was clear and a good balance between explaining theory and practical examples. The app is hard to use once you’ve completed that though. If I go back to the tutorial, then I get stuck, there’s no obvious way of navigating out. The menu options in game aren’t labelled and aren’t clear what they do and the general usability is low..Version: 2.6

Needs better instructions for beginnersI hate 9x9 go and am no good at it. I want to play 13x13 in this game without having to work my way up. It should make it clearer to the new user that you can escape 9x9 games by changing Auto Level to Manual. Then you can play whatever size board you want. But no way to save games. However, just bought SmartGo Pro - brilliant app, much better value for money, better at teaching, loads of problems and example games (professional, some with annotations), and able to be used as a game recorder. Well worth spending the extra few £s on Smart Go Pro, especially for beginners and double digit kyu players, who can learn a lot from working through the problems (30k to 6d)..Version: 0

Incomplete AIEven though the description says its based on the latest Monte Carlo engine, I feel the computer often makes unnecessary and fatal moves. Igowin may have a stronger AI..Version: 2.2

Not loading properlyWhat has happened to the game?.Version: 2.4

Wrong game boughtThought this game was reversi. Wanted Reversi.Version: 2.5.1

Worst go yetThis game try’s to teach go but I. Truth all it does is force you into frustrating positions it does not explain the rules at all and expected new players to beat a fairly good ai with no knowledge. what wins you can get seem like it wanted you to win so in conclusion if you are experienced go ahead this is fine but if you are New don’t even consider this app.Version: 2.6.1

AI too difficult for beginnersThe tutorial is good and the app functions well, but the AI is too difficult to play against when you are just getting started learning. It’s aggressive and doesn’t seem to make mistakes. I don’t expect to win every game when learning but if I don’t win in the first 10 moves where it early resigns, I won’t win. If it had a configurable difficultly I think this would be a great app. The score calculation seems broken too. If you have it calculate twice in a row it will give you different scores..Version: 2.6.2

SmartGo ProI have SmartGo pro, Is it still maintain? Sending multiple SGF by email is broken Only the first one it being attached I paid for this thing. So I am sad.....Version: 2.6.1

GoThis is not worth the$$.Version: 2.5.1

WonkyThought it was a good app until it somehow got linked to the ebook I bought from them. Launching the game brought up the book instead. I had to uninstall both and reinstall the game to play. Bad form..Version: 2.5.1

Lies. All lies. This app does NOT teach you anything. It merely supplies essentially what is a digital book of rules about the game. It does NOT show you how to play and give you various exercises to solidify the lesson (as it states in the description). I want my money back!.Version: 2.6.1

No name no playIn my opinion, only an idiot would design an entertainment app that won't let you play unless you enter your name. If there is a way around it, I couldn't find it. Sorry that I paid for this app. App designer focus is more on what they want and not on the customer experience..Version: 2.5.1

LimitedGood interactive tutorial/guide, but aimed at beginner level only. Not the clearest user interface, and a bit frustrating..Version: 2.6.1

Was ok until the ai started to cheatGame would suddenly start lagging ai's stones would move two at a time. I would get atari'd where it never had enough stones. I lost a game I should have won because it made an illegal move that wiped my stones from the board even though there's no way he got in the gaps in one move. Please fix this. It was a great app until the cheating and move stealing happened..Version: 2.5.1

Wish I hadn’t spent money on this appThis app is crap for beginners. Turned me off of Go completely..Version: 2.6.1

Uses only optimal moves every time. The app description led me to believe it taught the game. It doesn't. It simply corners you with the optimal move and often can't even beat itself if the hint system is used every move. The handicap system allows it to go first every time and since it knows the optimal move for every situation, you are not going to win any game that doesn't stump it within a few moves. If the board is full, it's going to beat you. The tutorials show and don't tell. There is no follow up to correct answers explaining why it's the best move. I would really like a refund as this isn't fun and is no substitute to playing a human. I came to learn how to fine tune my strategy, not watch a algorithm play out..Version: 2.6

Good app but too hard for beginners.Of course this app helps you learn go but as a beginner it’s just as likely to infuriate you. It gives you handicap automaticity but on 9x9 it’s likely to crush you if it doesn’t resign in the first 8 moves or so. Good luck trying to unlock larger boards against the bot. It’s far more fun to lean playing online, or against easier bots..Version: 2.6.2

Great teacher but...I started with the lessons and did ok, but some places were not understandable to me though. They should add some better explanations. After the lessons I tried to play Al, but obviously I'm terrible as of yet. The game always insists it won by 29 1/2 points... EVERY TIME. Even when the outcomes were totally different (to me). And I played a game that the Al double moved on its turn. I thought it cheated until I backed up and saw the Al place a stone between two of mine, capturing both. LOL.Version: 2.5.1

If you like humiliation. This game is for you.I nearly destroyed my phone. This game does not teach you anything it just crushes you or resigns after 3 moves. Pointless. 2 stars for the design..Version: 2.6.1

Good tutorial, bad gameSmartGo's tutorial teaches you the basics of Go well. I would say it's great, except a couple of the examples are poorly explained (for instance, in ex. 86 it's not at all clear to a beginner why white is dead). Besides the tutorial, SmartGo is pretty lackluster, especially since it cheats. When you end up with three quarters of the board plus 7 prisoners but SmartGo claims it won by half a point with its one quarter of the board and no prisoners, playing against this AI becomes pointless..Version: 2.5.1

AI issues and scoring problemsThe Go playing algorithm this app uses is deeply flawed. It performs very dumb moves, filling in its own territory because it does not have a good idea of when the game is over. When the game is over, scoring is performed incorrectly such that pieces that are obvious to capture are not marked as such..Version: 2.6.1

Please update with modern go AIModern go AI such as Facebook’s Dark Forest play much stronger than SmartGo, easily Dan level. Even just the eval methods of neural net based bots outperform old style Monte Carlo bots..Version: 2.6

Not worth itIt’s crap..Version: 2.6.1

This AI is infuriatingIt's impossible to learn anything. It's very aggressive and there are no easy settings for beginning players to get their bairing. Just pure annihilation. If you are trying to learn go, I recommend Tsumigo Pro. Don't bother with this until you've mastered Go and are looking for a challenge..Version: 2.6.1

Great for Learning but Crashes & GlitchesPaid for the app so not thrilled at the issues. When the move count gets too high, the iPad app responds more slowly and crashes. I play the big board, American rules, at fastest play settings. The game uses pass way too often. It seems that passshouodnt happen so many times in a row. Then, if I decide to pass first and I'm losing at the time, the game takes a second pass to acquire the win - instead of just playing the game. Why? I just started learning and playing last night (24 hrs ago) and although I haven't won, I feel great about losing at +6 1/2 points! This is because the tutorial is amazing! I do wish the (total current) score stayed visibleat the top of the screen instead of having to request it. I also wish I could play as black, it's easier to see all of the black stones on the ipad..Version: 2.6.1

Doesn’t teach you the rules or how to playDescription says it contains a tutorial but I can’t find one. I’ve never played Go and when I installed it it just started me immediately on a board playing myself. There isn’t a step by step guide of how to play. Searching through the app I found a list of rules but it’s more like a whole written manual than a step by step guide. I feel like the description is misleading. It doesn’t actually teach you how to play. You already have to know the rules and the basic concepts to get anything out of this app. If you are an absolute beginner, this isn’t for you..Version: 2.6.1

False advertisingThis app is not what it claims. There are no interactive tutorials. Just html pages to slog through..Version: 2.6.1

DifficultNeeds different difficulty settings I get murdered every time.Version: 2.6

Good tutorial, bad point calculatorThrough extended research, beyond just the game, i have figured out for the most part how to score the matches. The issue arises in the game when certain points on the map are awarded to a player with no clear explanation as to why. Even according to the tutorials provided by the game itself the scoring is contradicting. Maybe its’s just my ignorance? i cant seem to find an answer.Version: 2.6.1

No interactive tutorialWas expecting to be taught how to play..Version: 2.6.2

Not what's on the packet!Smartgo basic says it will play on larger boards than 9X9 but when you buy it it doesn't. Also no ref to kyu strength.Version: 0

Not intuitive layout, hard to figure out settingsIt takes a lot of time to figure out how to use this app. I got so frustrated I even deleted it from my phone. It feels like a waste honestly..Version: 2.6

MehI wanted to play GO with my son interactively through game center This app does not do that. I often ( by computer resignation ) win, but have no idea why. Do not find that instructive at all..Version: 2.5.1
