✓ GedViewI recently purchased an ipod touch as a replacement for my aging Palm pilot. I needed a GEDCOM file viewer for my ipod touch. GedView is a very good product and is definitely worth the price. GedView would be much improved if it had the ability to search by events (e.g. burials) and if it could also list births, deaths, and marriages for a given date and had a relationship calculator. It would be cool to see these features added to a future version of GedView. Thank you for adding the “On This Day” feature. It would help if the names were easier to read with larger font and better color. It would really be neat if you created an “On This Day” widget for this app. Thank you for considering..Version: 4.0.7
✓ Great value for the appI looked over all of the genealogy apps only a few were able to import gedcom files. When comparing the remaining apps GedView seemed like the best value for what you get. ✓ Very nice!I'm still not sure how I was able to upload successfully but after reloading the browser window after pressing submit the file was indeed on the iPod. I'm using this to help with a local history project by connecting persons in family groups that are buried together in a pioneer cemetery. PAF creates the Gedcom file. ✓ ExcellentI find GedView an excellent way of carrying a copy of my family history information around with me on my iPad. From time to time, I export a GEDCOM file from Family Historian, which is my main system, and copy it (simply as an email attachment) to the iPad. Then GedView will pick it up in a perfectly trouble-free way. So, when I’m away from home, for example in an archive, all the information I need is instantly available. I wouldn’t want to make GedView my principal piece of family history software (that doesn’t seem to be the designers’ intention, anyway) but it’s very good indeed at the job I use it for..Version: 4.2.3
✓ Simple but powerfulThis is a great tool for doing iPad based research on the go. It is easy to use but quite powerful. ✓ GEDVIEW ON THE IPHONEI bought an IPhone on a whim but have really enjoyed looking for apps and this is the best I have bought by far. I like to take my research with me and this is brill. The only way to upload the Gedcom is by WIFI or through your own site, I did not have either so emailed Gedview support and they gave me a simple free solution (the next day!!) through setting up a free website on Google. Their instructions were easy to follow and spot on. It would be handier if it uploaded the gedcom file through itunes. But the solution given worked well just a little time consuming. I have only just started using this app and it seems to be a great handy app for the Genealogist. The only reason I gave 4 not 5 stars is I have not had chance to use it much so I will come back and update it!.Version: 0

✓ A good basic tool - fantastic support from the authorThe App comes with a manual which is helpful but never the less I had a problem with uploading my data from PC to iPad. I emailed the author David Knight and he replied in just under 30 minutes with a solution (I hadn't converted the file format to 'gedcom' using my family tree software ‘PAF’) and step by step guide using PAF. I just can’t understand the negative review. Obviously that person hadn’t the sense to ask for help – big mistake!.Version: 0

✓ Does exactly what it saysIgnore the bad reviews, a quick scan through them shows a complete lack of understanding of what this app purports to do. It is not a full blown Family Tree program, it never claims to be that. It does however allow you to edit the fields in your GED file, in other words it's a GED file editor, but with some useful embellishments. In fact a LOT of useful embellishments. I find it useful to carry about as a field tool during research trips. I've downloaded my GED file into my iPad, use Gedview to add facts, folk or whatever, and then merge it back into my computer family tree software. It does what it claims and more. If you're looking for something to produce fancy pedigree or descendant charts, or link photo and source data, then get the appropriate Family Tree software. ✓ Take your ancestral history wherever you goFor many years I have been maintaining family trees using Generations Deluxe 6 Windows software. Initially, I used MyRoots to keep the information on my Palm, but after migrating to an iPOD Touch and iPAD, found this app. It's very easy to use. Just export a GEDCOM file (mine is GEDCOM 5.5) and transfer to device over WiFi - no iTunes is required. Multiple Family Trees can be imported into app - just use a unique name for each separate tree. GED files can be reimported into app and will overwrite existing file. There is an extensive User Guide on the website. Great app..Version: 3.4

I have my main desk top genealogy software so when you're out and about you and just need a reminder of a few facts, not a full blown package.... GedView does the job. For updates, there are two I would like: 1) I would like a facility to add notes when you are out and about (not necesarily update the ged file) and then get a listing of your notes when you get back home 2) To search for places and list people connected (so if you visit somewhere, you can see who in your tree has connections with that location, what family names to look for in the local grave yard) (you could link into the GPS and do a map of events for the local area.....) I have over 9000 individuals in my tree and am well used to carrying my laptop around when I'm in need of checking data. In future I won't need to do that... as long as I've got my phone with me. I can search for individuals or families in seconds, see pedigree charts and all of the copious notes and data that have included on my tree - all in a really user friendly format. I gather you can even edit the data... although I haven't yet worked out whether you can then upload the edited GEDCOM back to the master file on the laptop. It's fast, efficient and impressive. ✓ Excellent AppThis is a high performing family history mobile software, that is much more than a viewer. I converted a FTM 2006 version 16 file running on Windows XP to a GED format, and transferred it to an iPAD 2 wireless via a Windows 7 based wireless laptop. This used the "upload to device" wireless server method built into GedView. No problems. My file is a text only format with a large number of notes, and it all transferred. GedView appears to have all of the editing/revision tools that would be needed to maintain a working family history. I have only taken a quick look at the family tree graphs, and the traditional genealogical display seems limited to a "pedigree" chart, and this is generation limited. This is noted in the user manual as having a memory constrained limit. Perhaps an iPad is less memory constrained than some of the other portable devices, and could have a more graphic features version. ✓ ChuffedReally quite happy to have this little app. I can leave all of my notebooks, to do lists and maps behind when I do my research --- which was why I bought an iTouch specifically. The only real suggestion I have would be to include use of non-Latin characters, as it strips Eastern European accented letters and Anglicises them. Ancestry dot com is getting too greedy, I had occasionally bought a subscription to get extra info but mainly used it without. Now they bombard you with advertisements. The first time I imported my GedFile was a little tricky, but if you follow the instructions you can't go wrong. Since then I've imported GedFiles several times without a hitch. It seems very stable, and I'm currently running v2.2 Downloads take several minutes to install, but then I have over 16,000 linked individuals on my trees. A great product, keep up the good work. Loading the Gedcom file from an email was super fast and easy once I figured out how to do it. Read the manual;). I have my research and data on a laptop computer. I would not want to work primarily from a phone or IPod etc. So this works well as a handy mobile reference. I think that to expect more is impractical. I have over 5,000 names now and no glitches so far. I would like to see more tree options, especially direct descendancy and compression of the existing tree. The family group sheet also displays initially in the corner oft screen. Full screen would be nicer. I would give this a five but not until I see further refinement. ✓ Very very goodThis is the app I was looking for - It does not require membership a special service like Ancestry and it displays my standardized GEDCOM data beautifully without requiring a data connection. It’s very flexible in the import options, and I really like way I was able to import only part of my multimedia library. (I didn’t want my entire scanned document library on my phone, but I did want portraits of individuals.) The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is there is no automatic sync. To share data with my Mac app ( GEDitCOM II) I have to manually import/export. But I’d buy it again..Version: 3.4.4

My GED file has 502 individuals and 198 marriages. I uploaded it to my Verizon web space and gave the resulting file URL to GedView. Result: I now have 10 years of genealogy data at my fingertips on my iPod! I couldn't be happier with an app! GedView has nice reports that you can zoom in on and excellent search engine and indexes to find the individual that you need in a hurry. I can't wait to explore its other features. ✓ Finally a GEDCOM viewer!Very nicely done! Exported my Family Tree Maker 2006 data to GedCom format and imported it to iPhone via my home WiFi in seconds. All my data (~800 individuals including extensive notes) seems to have transferred perfectly. Has a good password feature so that your data will not be accessible to anyone who picks up your phone. Locations are clickable and bring up a map--very nice! Also has a good little graphical tree view for pedigree although it did crash the program once (hence only 4 stars in my rating) although the problem has not been repeated. I had waited and asked for an app like this for my Blackberry for 3 years but no one could oblige. Nice to have an iPhone + this app as it will make it easy to check my data when out and about. I don't use it as my main repository which is held on a package on the Mac as it's so much more powerful. However, it's great for receiving the gedcom download. ✓ Cannot Recommend Enough!!I was looking for an easy way to transfer my current family tree (from Heredis 2022 for Windows), plus all the sources and images associated with it, onto a mobile app. The Heredis mobile app was not up to the job, as it does not include the sources, their images and transcriptions on the uploaded data. This does the job perfectly - nothing is missing! Plus it is in an easy to use and pleasing interface and you can view information in so many different ways. To transfer the GEDCOM file with its associated images, you just need to have the images in the same folder as the GEDCOM file, and then convert this to a zip file. Then this zip file can be uploaded to your device using Wi-Fi or by several other methods. This will allow me to carry the most recent complete copy of my family tree around with me - incredible! Recently I decided to upload an updated gedcom complete with a huge file of images and kept getting an error message. ✓ Excellent applicationI have family tree maker on pc with over 6,000 people included. Instead of having to buy mac software, as other applications require, this one works direct off a gen file. I uploaded my gen file very easily to the application and everything works great. All the info I require to use during researching at historicial societies, libraries etc is in the palm of the hand instead of carting folders and books etc about. Set out well, easy to search, all info there. Compared to the price of others and the requirements of buying their software this is a great application which I will be using a lot. Thanks. ✓ Best genealogy app I've usedAdmittedly, I haven't used many, but GEDview does what I need. I can carry my GED data with me, update and add records, and it's pretty easy to use. I can even add photos and take notes while in the field. Works offline, which is important. Imports GED files easily. What more do you need? :-).Version: 3.4.1

✓ Blown away!I read about this app through the Legacy Users Group. After looking at David Knight's website I decided to give it a try. Wow! This is a fully functional genealogy program. I downloaded a gedcom with about 4600 individuals and lots of data. It works accurately and fast. It includes individual, family and pedigree views. Easy editing functions, screen rotation, easily readable - I could go on and on. This will be so useful when interviewing family members, visiting libraries and cemeteries and for entertainment when I'm bored. Couldn't be happier! ✓ Almost perfectReally like this genealogy app. I have been using it for some years. I have tried several more expensive ones but I keep coming back to this one. It is easy to find the person you are looking for even without using the search tool as the index is divided by family name. You can also export a gedcom by email which is really useful. It may not offer as many features as other apps but sometimes that is a good thing. The app is also very stable. Never crashed in all the time I have been using it. The only thing I would like added is the ability to sync between my ipad and iphone rather than doing it manually..Version: 3.4.1
✓ GenealgyI was able to transfer over 10,000 and it went quickly. Now, In The library, this program, although basic without multiple colors and bells and whistles, has all I need and is invaluable. My original data file was made by Family Tree Maker and I transferred it as a GEDCOM. Nice to see something that works so well and does not require a lot of computer intelligence..Version: 0
✓ Terrific!!I cannot believe how easy this was. And dirt cheap for what it gives you. I bought the app from my iTouch - installed within seconds. I am not that savvy with this stuff so I was a little concerned on how I would get my existing Ged format database onto the iTouch and into the app. I followed the instructions and went to "Select/Import Gedcom file" and chose "Upload to Device". It invited me to type an http:// IP address in my web browser on the Mac and then to choose the file. I selected the Gedcom file from my backup memory stick and there it was!! It appeared of its own accord on the iTouch as a new database!! I have checked through and everything seems to have imported perfectly, and it does more than I expected reading the reviews. Wonderful. As a simple and handy file to carry around it is exactly what I wanted. I can't recommend this highly enough..Version: 3.0.6

✓ Love ItI created my family tree on my pc using Family Historian. I was looking for an app to transfer it to my iPhone. I found Ged View and it is exactly what I was looking for. I was amazed at all the options for uploading my tree. Since my computer and phone are on the same home network, I choose to upload the files directly from computer to phone. It worked flawlessly! I couldn’t believe it but all 1487 people were there with all the family links in place. All 647 photographs were there and properly linked. Now I have my family tree in my pocket with photographs. I am very happy! The only reason I didn’t give five stars is because of one flaw I found. When I am looking at a photo and rotate my phone to horizontal, it skips to a different photo. ✓ A great app!I use The Master Genealogist on my PC and another product on my iPhone for a handy, go everywhere reference. After acquiring my iPad that other product just wouldn't cut it anymore. I downloaded GedView this evening and imported a fresh Gedcom. Wow! I cannot believe how easy it was to import it across my wifi network. I was up and running in under ten minutes. Thanks for making it so easy. The only problem thus far was when I clicked on "descendants" on a way-back ancestor without thinking...I received a "not enough memory" message. Sigh...I guess I will have to wait until I can buy an iPad model 10 that comes with 8 GB of ram and a terabyte of flash memory. On a more practical note, the only items or things that I miss so far are caused by the nature of the gedcom exchange format itself. This is a great app and I can not recommend it highly enough!.Version: 0
✓ Great AppOne of the few genealogy apps available & IMO the best. I have used genealogy apps on windows phones, but this one beats them all especially with it's pedigree view. One enhancement I would like to see would be the addition of a 'home' person that is always shown at startup, however, this can be partialy achieved currently by using bookmarks so no great problem. ✓ Great genealogy appI want to refute the low scores that some customers have given. I have been using this app for almost a year and it has worked very well. I am running it on a 2nd Gen iPod Touch. I have been doing genealogy research for about 45 years and it is a real help for me to have a mobile capability like this. I keep my primary databases on Personal Ancestry File (PAF) and the GEDCOM files that it generates are opened correctly by this app. I am pleased, and the price is great. I wrote directly to the developer with a suggestion for an enhancement regarding display of GEDCOM Sources and was pleasantly surprised when he responded with thanks the next day. I give it five stars for functional value for the price..Version: 3.2.7
