✓ IPhone XR issueThe version 3.9.9 of Spyglass does not allow one to read both the north and west GPS coordinates at the same time. Due to the XR’s screen configuration, either the north or west GOS coordinates are blocked from view. Otherwise, it’s a nice GPS app with a lot of uses..Version: 3.9.9

✓ This is the oneThe ONLY thing that’s a drawback about this app is that if you’re truly out in the middle of nowhere without internet service, the map overlay won’t work. But that is not Spyglass’ fault, and everything else here is *superb*. This is a professional-grade compass, and then some. Sextant, inclinometer, rangefinder, and other goodies. ✓ Awesome!I've been looking for an app that does well offline for travel and navigating in developing countries with no data, or where roaming makes data very expensive. I can bookmark a location and find my way back, see which direction and how far, and bookmark locations from a map when I am online or from raw coordinates. ✓ RevolutionaryIf you've watched the film Red Planet then you will have seen a nav aid that, when you hold it in front of you, superimposes the mapping info onto what you can see through the transparent sheet.......... This app is effectively todays version of that, using the camera to display your line of sight so you dont have to keep looking up to try and and take a proper bearing. Displaying the sun, stars, and waypoints as they come into view of the camera, and if you lay it flat it brings up the mapping if you have a data signal. This is brilliant for a nav buff like me, loads of military potential. Likes to drink the juice so have a back up power supply with you. Well done, awesome app..Version: 3.3.3

✓ Rangefinder for archeryI purchased this app to estimate target range and angle for field archery. After some time reading the user guide to work out how to use that feature, I discovered that you need to know the size of the target for the calculation to be correct. Fortunately targets are a standard size, so this is possible. Once I get a chance to measure them, I intend to test the accuracy at my club! ✓ Simply awesomeI have only tested this app on known woodland walks but it has been consistently accurate and has never crashed. The ability to add and view stars, waypoints through the iPhone camera is very impressive. Highly recommended to assist nav. If your doing some nav that has safety implications, take a compass & map as a backup! The only con of this app is the iPhone as you effectively close the app if you get a call. ✓ Great for Sailing NavigationAn exceptionally useful App to support navigation while sailing. The Gyrocompass is a great option for checking the accuracy of any installed magnetic compasses. Using an iPad mini mounted on a bulkhead the app provides a great touch screen navigation tool using the maps display option for coastal passage making. The current speed and bearing displays are large enough to monitor accurate course keeping. ✓ BrilliantI've only begun to explore the full capability of this amazing app. I was installing temperature and soil moisture sensors across several of my experiments, and recorded each one as a waypoint in Spyglass. The app then showed me, on a GoogleEarth image, where each one was with stunning accuracy, allowing me to gauge their relative positions and plan where to install the next one. Within the app I photographed each one with positional information overlaid on the images. I emailed the waypoints from within the app to my team members so that they could see and find the equipment using their iDevices. I can see that Spyglass will do other things, such as allow me to measure the heights of trees ( I am a forest scientist), layout experimental plots, and so on. It may seem a strange adjective for software, but this is a beautiful app. The rendering has been carefully sorted out and it is a joy to use. I highly recommend SpyGlass to anyone who hikes, walks, lays out experiments, farms, hunts, fishes, in short, anyone who wants to find their way, establish their global position and store points in a useful and easily visible format..Version: 3.7.7

✓ Great toolCalibration using visual land marks, satellite aerial map and sun make this a very accurate tool. Accuracy is there if you know how to set it up. Metal is no longer an issue when finding an azimuth. Remote tree and building heights is another favorite use of this powerful tool. Take the time to learn this app. Still using frequently and am really impressed. One improvement would be an option for large text for Bering. Or a separate azimuth mode with larger bearing text. Update: Years later I still use this app. In fact, it’s only app I pay money for. It is worth it to me. I install communications equipment, and when I have to set specific directional antenna path, I use this tool where I can literally put my phone on the back of the antenna and hit the target, after a local calibration. I hope the developers will incorporate a similar function for horizon calibration. Since there is no reliable mount that will eliminate shifts in a phones vertical movement, a user can never be confident in the accuracy of the horizon calibration. I imagine a calculation with the shift in elevation could provide adequate data. I would prefer reliability and consistency over precision with this feature while enabled. ✓ Pretty Great but…I’m having a lot of fun and getting plenty of use from this app but I’m wondering about a couple of things which annoy me to the point that I can’t give it five stars. When adding a new destination via a map location, is there a way to also have the correct elevation of that specific location included? When I add a location, the correct GPS coordinates are there but I believe it is using my current elevation and not the elevation of that desired location. Also, I read the manual and it mentions a Car Mode but I do not see that option in settings. Has it been removed? Is there an alternative? It appears the manual is a bit outdated. ✓ What happened to the Open Street maps?Back to normal with OSM maps after an app deletion, reinstallation. It may have been a map caching issue. Funny thing is, I had only been using OSM maps. Once the app was updated to the newest version, the USGS Topo maps were there and enabled. Toggling to OSM maps numerous times, restarting the devices did not clear the issue. This was on two different devices…both devices required the app deletion, reinstallation to get them back to normal. App rating changed back to 5 stars. The “Open Street maps” that I used exclusively are now gone and are now instead USGS topo maps…what happened to the OSM @ Happymagenta maps??? Sorry guys but I dock you three stars for removing a great map option with an “update”..Version: 3.10.1

✓ Well done, but has calibration issueFor those looking for a sophisticated compass/direction/bearing app, this is absolutely fantastic. For those more typical users who still haven't used their devices built-in map app to guide them along roads or sidewalks showing their movement and the direction they are facing live on the satellite image view, I'd say this more advanced but also very limited/specific compass app would be of no use. Note that this is not a full/typical navigation app as most people think of them (and it is not meant to be, so that is not a drawback), it will store locations, but only use them for showing straight line bearing/direction/distance from your current point. It is basically an advanced compass, it has amazing features and capabilities, making it probably the ultimate compass available. It also includes a few additional compass/angle/elevation related tools. As stated in the app description, it will store the location of your parking spot or hotel, but it will not guide you there (unless you can walk/drive there in one straight line through buildings, etc), and it will not track movement - it is an advanced compass, you will have to manually navigate using the map. If an advanced compass is what you want, this is it - with one issue - calibration is extremely difficult to do. I don't mean calibration of the compass/direction, that works great (and in most cases automatically), I mean horizon and elevation, which mostly affect the HUD, the main feature (as I see it) of this app. If you don't care about those aspects, this is not an issue. To fully calibrate, you have to calibrate six orientations, each time manually positioning your device on two axis at the same time to references you find/create (e.g. horizon level side-to-side and device also perfectly vertical) then pushing the button. It works, but is a real nightmare and a great deal of work to do. I found my camera is oriented perfectly within the case of my devices (iPhone, iPad), but orientation sensors were a bit off (around 5 degrees) on both devices, so it did need calibrating. It would be far better if the app could be calibrated like the many 'bubble level' apps, no external references needed, and super simple to do, and actually far more accurate as well. A quick way to check if calibration is out in one orientation (my way to check, not the authors): lay device flat on a table, and tilt it around very slightly, the angle reading should hit and max at -90 degrees, if not, you're out. Great app (but please redo/improve the calibration method)!.Version: 3.3.6
